Hi. I want to learn more about primates, but I don't know where to start. Do you know how and where can I begin this journey? Thanks.

Great question! I commend that you’re looking to go on a learning journey. It isn’t hard to learn about primates, but there are a lot of options. I would recommend starting with primate education thats intended to be accessible for wide audiences. A good way to do this is by going to the websites of reputable zoos and sanctuaries and looking at the resources they have.

If you like our blog, take a look at some other primate social media accounts that work directly with primates. On instagram, I follow napsaprimates, lemurscientist, ippl_summerville, gibbonsapiens, awajishimamonkeycenter, oran_girl, fauna.foundation, malaysiangibbons, sandiegozoo, orangutan_foundation, chimp_sanctuary, dukelemurcenter, bosfoundation, savethechimps, chimphaven, lemur.conservation.foundation, vervetmonkeyfoundation, genki_no_takaramono, neprimateconsrv, save_the_glt, gibbonconservationsociety, monkey_haven, liberiachimprescue, gorilladoctors, centerforgreatapes, and bos_uk, to name a few. If you follow the account of a primate foundation, sanctuary, or zoo that houses primates, look at who they’re following to find more good accounts! These accounts tend to link to other websites for more information too.

Another good source is Wikipedia! If you have a favourite primate you can get a lot of info on them there. Theres also nothing wrong with googling if you have questions, but if you have more complex questions I can understand that this might not be effective.

I am a big National Geographic enthusiast, you can buy online or print access (or both), or if you aren’t sure about spending money you can make a free account to access 3 free articles a month. If you have Disney Plus, watching Meet the Chimps is educational and super fun, and it was produced by National Geographic. National Geographic is where a lot of the sources on this blog are from! And speaking of our blog, all the underlined parts of our posts and answers are links that you can click on for more information.

Lastly, if you like videos ranging from short videos to full documentaries, I have been working on a YouTube playlist of educational and ethical primate videos. There are currently 95 videos of various lengths about a variety of species. You can find it here. It includes the entirety of orangutan jungle school clips available, zoo footage, and clips from Smithsonian channel and National Geographic features.

Was opening the door to orangutans living one step closer to the wild thrilling? Of course! But it was also an important part of us understanding the learning process these animals go through before they are deemed ready for release. As youngsters they spend their days in Forest School learning from humans as surrogate mothers to build nests and find food. As they grow more independent they can graduate to a pre-release island (if there is space.) Here they will continue to receive supplemental feeding and monitoring. We also learned a great deal about moving animals as we watched 6 go through health checks, and transport via truck and boat. Senang bisa bertemu dengan mereka tapi sayang tempat tinggalnya sudah semakin berkurang akibat penebangan liar dan pembukaan lahan baru oleh manusia sehingga tidak jarang ditemui orangutan yang masuk keperkampungan warga. Syukur² dibiarkan kembali ke hutan, banyak kasus mereka ditembaki, dipukuli karrna dianggap hama, bahkan ada yang dikonsumsi oleh orang² yang tidak bertanggung jawab. Sungguh malang nasibmu otan. i’m trying to find the source of the bus orang image but so far all i’m getting is reposted gifs and one actually good and cute video of orphaned orangs with properly outfitted caregivers on a bus to sanctuary (https://www.facebook.com/BOSFoundation/videos/1607926105936503/)

which is the trouble with this kind of contextless content because there might damn well be a good reason for this exact situation, it may just be scary good cgi!! but the signs all point to this being a pet or show animal trained to imitate a human bus rider which is, despite no whips or cigarette burns, a bad situation for a juvenile orangutan

no one knows what to look for, or that they even should be looking in the first place, and it’s people thinking pictures like this are funny that normalize primates as pets and thus encourage the whole abusive trade
