“Yet the bar scene was often the target of police violence, and was largely dominated by gay men. With more access to money and public space than their lesbian counterparts, gay men, while still in danger of homophobic violence, could dance, sweat, and cruise more freely. Lesbians, meanwhile, struggled under the dual burden of sexism and homophobia. They made less money than their male counterparts, and were subject to specific kinds of sexual harassment and violence. Those who were mothers, married or divorced, risked losing custody of their children. Martin and Lyon decided that if they couldn’t find lesbians in the gay bar scene, they would create a lesbian space for themselves.
Their first meeting, in September 1955, was simple enough: a dinner between four couples in a friend’s home. But Martin and Lyon had tapped into a collective craving. Within five years, chapters of the group had sprung up from San Diego to Chicago, New Orleans to New York. They called themselves the Daughters of Bilitis.
One of their signature events was called Gab ‘n Java, and it was exactly what it sounds like. Women came together over coffee and cake, sharing what they could. These meetings, while less overtly political than later lesbian activism, did something amazing: In an era where being out could lead to serious legal and social consequences, they helped American lesbians realize their collective strength. Soon, the meetings included more extensive offerings—salads and quiches, booze and baked goods. “Some women were very accomplished, some women were struggling,” says Marcia Gallo, a professor at the University of Nevada who wrote a history of the DoB. “Many of them felt like they were the only ones.” But at Daughters of Bilitis meetings, they were together.”

My Short Career In The Hospitality Industry
Tumblr media
San Diego was a happening place back in the 1970s. A lot cheaper and a lot less crowded than it is now. Regular people could afford to live at the beach. It was then, as it still is today, full of beautiful young people because for our size we had more than our share of universities and a hot job market. Add to that an all year round tourist destination and it was the place to be.
The job to have for a young single man who was going to college during the day was bartender. He could make a ton of money working nights and if he was young and good-looking working those conventions full of optometrists and accountants at conferences without their husbands who have had a few too many drinks and the next thing you know its “here’s my room number cowboy if you’re up for some fun later”. As you might imagine it was tough to get those jobs because you had to “know somebody”. That usually meant coming up through ranks at one of the big hotels. That’s where we come in.
I started out as a “barback”. You know the guy who cuts the limes and arranges everything at the bar stations Then once the event started he watched the bartender and learned like an apprentice. There was a main bartender and two sub-bartender and six waitresses. The bartenders were all men. The waitstaff were all women. The men were in charge without question. Even we lowly bar backs could boss the girls around.
If I played my cards right in eighteen months or two years I could be a bartender and work anywhere in the world, at a hotel or on a cruise ship. It was a career. It was fun. Not very hard. Cash money. Lots of hot cocktail waitresses. Lots of hot tourist girls. Booze. Joints at work. The hotels were about ten minutes from my school and my apartment.
It all fell apart when I discovered two things about myself. I could not steal. I was too proud to take tips. I know weird. I’m in hospitality training to be a bartender and I’m okay if somebody LEAVES a tip but I can’t ACCEPT one. My entire life’s training has trained me not to take something in return for a kindness. Also, I do not take charity. If it feels that I am being tipped because I am poor and they are wealthy, my working class hackles go up and I think: “my people were kings in Caledonia once. I do not want your charity.”
The stealing? Once I was accepted as one of the guys I was introduced to a custom. The bartenders and barbacks skimmed from the pooled tips of the waitresses taking about 1/4 of it. I refused to take my share. That made me suspect and I was soon fired on trumped-up charges.
Fired for being too honest. Put that one in your journal, Sammy.

San Diego is one of the best places in the world to be in the summer season whether you live here or are on a San Diego vacation. During the summer of 2019, things to do in San Diego with kids include some new events in addition to our usual, seasonal ones.
It’s by no means a complete list so if you have ideas, please leave them in the comments.
1. Watch an Outdoor Movie (Parks, Beach, or USS Midway)
This summer, make it a plan to watch one of our outdoor movies. The Summer Movies in the Park initiative began several years ago to draw attention to local parks. It’s been such a huge success that venues like the USS Midway are participating. What a unique opportunity to watch a movie from the deck of a famous aircraft carrier!
Other opportunities to watch a movie al fresco include a series shown on the Botanical Lawn by the San Diego Museum of Art that highlights themes incorporated into recent gallery installations.
Watch a movie at the beach, hosted by Hotel Del Coronado. Sit on the sand or arrive early to secure a Del Beach chair rental. VIP Movie packages include s’mores, two Del Beach chairs and a Del Beach day bed (reserve in advance, $300).
2. Grab Tickets for the San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights
Bayside Summer Nights is the San Diego Symphony’s outdoor summer concert series (Summer Pops) at the Embarcadero Marina Park South. I can’t tell you enough how much I recommend this experience for the entire family as it’s one of our favorite summer activities in San Diego. You’ll see a beautiful sunset over the San Diego Bay during the concert while sipping wine or noshing on gourmet fare.
Concerts this year feature the likes of the B-52s, Chaka Khan, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and more. Grab your friends with kids and go for some fun family time (Or, go for date night). Tip: Bring glow sticks for the kids and check out their new ticket packages.
3. Explore the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park
La Jolla is home to a unique underwater park that is full of marine life. The San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park is outlined by seven sea caves, including Sunny Jim, the only sea cave in the West that is accessible by land (via the Cave Store on Coast Blvd.). Their history is an interesting one as some were used to smuggle booze during prohibition.
Take a guided snorkeling tour or rent a kayak at one of the vendors in La Jolla Shores.
4. See the La Jolla Leopard Sharks
La Jolla is home to the largest aggregation of leopard sharks in the world and it’s possible to enjoy them in even knee-deep water. Females come to incubate in warm waters near The Marine Room restaurant on La Jolla Shores beach.
Yes, they’re safe to be around. Numbers peak in July and August so plan to paddle out on SUP or kayak for a look. You can also snorkel and swim among them (minimize kicking to avoid scaring them away).
In honor of annual leopard shark season, Birch Aquarium offers multiple opportunities to snorkel with a Birch Aquarium naturalist.
5. Go Grunion Running
Yes! The grunion are running on various days all summer long. Grunion runs occur late at night so the activity suits tweens and teens best. Check the calendar and note when its open or closed season. Closed season means that there is no fishing allowed. Open season means you can actually catch them with a valid fishing license. Tip: It’s more fun with a headlamp to see the fish versus risking your phone over water or sand.
6. Sleep at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, USS Midway Museum, or Maritime Museum
Looking for a cool overnight thing to do in San Diego with kids this summer? Did you know that you can glamp with the animals at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park?
Themed overnights provide an opportunity to sleep (safely) near animals, enjoy educational programming, and participate in special close-up encounters. Don’t stress about having camping gear as it can be provided. The Roar and Snore Safari offers several tent options (including deluxe cabins with beds).
Sleepover at the USS Midway Museum during youth, family, and movie night Overnight Adventures. You’ll dine like crew in the galley, sleep on sailor bunks, and participate in unique behind-the-scenes activities.
Join the Maritime Museum of San Diego’s Family Overnight on the Star of India on June 22.
7. Ride Water Slides at Aquatica San Diego
San Diego’s seasonal water park is open on select dates from May 24–October 6. All ages have something to do at Aquatica San Diego between high-speed thrill rides and a special area for kids no taller than 48″. Reserve a private cabana or lounger, eat funnel cakes and California-inspired food (craft beer and frozen margaritas for 21+), and lounge in the lazy river. There are several ways to buy discount Aquatica San Diego tickets.
Shortcut to the Most Popular Ticket
Discounted Single Day Aquatica Tickets.
Save and go straight to the gate.
8. Look for Special Theme Park/Museum Experiences
So, maybe you already have an annual San Diego Zoo membership or a Balboa Park Explorer pass. Scour their websites to find additional programming to take advantage of as these attractions offer many, many edutainment opportunities led by experts in their fields.
Fleet Science Center has Saturday Science Club for kids on the second Saturday of each month.
Join Birch Aquarium for their long list of summer camps.
San Diego Museum of Natural History offers hikes, toddler story time and more. Check their family event calendar.
The list goes on.
9. Visit Balboa Park on Friday Nights
Be sure to check the Balboa Park event calendar for a Food Truck Fridays between May 31–September 27 where several museums stay open late, food trucks line Plaza de Panama, and musical performers entertain.
10. Explore a New-to-You San Diego Museum
Why not visit a museum that you haven’t been to before? Many San Diego museums also offer extended summer hours. Visit the San Diego Museum Council’s list of museums and pick one that is new-to-you.
Don’t forget about Residents Free Tuesdays where San Diego residents receive free admission to a rotating list of Balboa Park museums on Tuesdays. And, if you expect to visit two or more museums or attractions within 30 days, consider the Build-Your-Own Go San Diego Card.
11. Hike Torrey Pines
The trails of Torrey Pines State Park are fantastic for those who want a bit of outdoor exercise but they are easily explored at a leisurely pace with kids. The views of the Pacific are fantastic and between the flora and fauna, there’s quite a bit of fun stuff to look at.
Food isn’t allowed but you could picnic on the beach or grab a sandwich at the Torrey Pines Gliderport afterward.
12. Ride a Surrey
Have you ever seen those multiple passenger bikes cruising down San Diego boardwalks? These surreys are available for the public to rent by the hour in front of the Hilton San Diego Resort (Mission Bay), Hotel Del Coronado, Loews Coronado Bay, and other resorts mostly via Action Sport Rentals. It’s another fantastic and fun way to explore.
13. Ride an Aquacycle on Mission Bay
Speaking of fun rentals, wouldn’t the kids get a kick out of riding an aquacycle with you on top of the water. They basically look like a giant floating tricycle. We haven’t done it, so it’s on our list for something to do in San Diego with kids this summer.
The same venues that offer water sports rentals also usually offer stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, Jet Skis and other fun things to do in the water. You may also try jetpacking. Carlsbad Lagoon rentals on Agua Hedionda lagoon also has aquacycles.
14. Fly a Kite
Kite flying is not a lost art and it’s a great free thing to do in San Diego with kids this summer. Find green space (there is plenty) around Mission Bay, South Carlsbad State Beach, Dog Beach (when not crowded), or a park near you to fly a kite.
REI has kites but you could always head to a kite store like Kite Flite in Seaport Village. Make sure that the kite is kid-friendly and that you are careful not to fly it over roads, over people or near power lines.
15. Go on a Picnic
Enjoy the great outdoors by going on a picnic with family and friends. Pack a lunch (or, heck, grab some awesome sandwiches for takeout) and head to a local park with picnic facilities, the beach, Balboa Park, or wherever you like to eat outside.
Bundle this activity with kite flying and other outdoor fun to knock several to-do’s off your summer bucket list at once. My picnic to-do includes nabbing one of the green huts along Ellen Browning Scripps Park in La Jolla in time for the sunset.
16. Attend an Outdoor Concert
A number of cities throughout San Diego County (Del Mar, Carlsbad, Coronado, Santee, El Cajon, Mission Hills and more) offer summer outdoor concerts that are free to attend. There is usually plenty of space for the kids to run around, food for sale, raffle prizes and more.
Check the list here, which also includes some fun ticketed options.
17. Attend Raptor School (La Jolla, Ramona, and Alpine)
This is one of the more unique things to do in San Diego with kids this summer though it’s available year-round. Total Raptor eXperience offers owl encounters and falconry classes for all ages at the Torrey Pines Gliderport in La Jolla and their main facilities in Ramona.
We’ve taken a basic falconry class with Sky Falconry. They offer hawk walks, falconry classes, and more at their ranch in Alpine. These classes not only provide unique interactions with raptors but also teach you about how our actions impact amazing animals like these.
18. Support San Diego’s Only Rollerskating Rink
It’s been in business for over four decades and the historic building is threatened by closure. So, get out there and roller skate with the family at Skateworld. It’s great exercise, gets kids off their electronics and its super fun. They’re offering rollerskating camps, too.
19. Take an Electric Bike Tour
This idea will suit the teens in your life (typically ages 16 and older) but an electric bike tour is an excellent way to see San Diego. This summer, I’d like to take the SoCal Riviera Tour of La Jolla and Mount Soledad with San Diego Fly Rides. I see these riders cruising my neighborhood on occasion and it looks like so much fun. Plus, there is way less pedaling (if you want) on an electric bike.
20. Visit a California Mission
This tip is especially relevant when kids are studying missions in 4th grade. But, it’s just as easy to pop a baby in a carrier for a nice walk around a new place.
San Diego County is home to the largest of the 21 California missions, Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside. It is open daily for self-guided tours of the onsite museum and grounds, but do check their calendar for a list of events including behind-the-scenes tours, retreats, cooking classes, and workshops.
Mission San Diego de Alcala, which overlooks Old Town San Diego, was California’s first mission. Visitors can explore the grounds, attend mass or sit for quiet reflection in the gardens. An audio tour is available.
Or, it is incredibly easy to take an Amtrak train to San Juan Capistrano. The mission there is within a very short walk of the station and such a cool day trip.
21. Tour the Stuart Collection
Take kids on somewhat of a scavenger hunt to find the various sculptures and art installations in the Stuart Collection, a public art display that is sprinkled throughout UC San Diego. Stop into one of the casual campus restaurants that are open during summer for lunch or a snack. Read more about the Stuart Collection.
22. Have Afternoon Tea
If the kids are feeling fidgety in the late afternoon and you’re not feeling like an outdoor activity, how about a proper afternoon tea with scones, tea sandwiches, and sweets? Choices include:
Shakespeares Corner Shoppe
Fairmont Grand Del Mar
The Westgate Hotel
23. Attend a Luau
The Catamaran is hosting its annual summer luaus on the beach on Tuesdays and Fridays. The buffet menu includes a long list of Hawaiian favorites such as Kalua Roast Pig. Enjoy live music, lei making, and more without the long flight.
24. Take a Surfing Lesson
San Diego is home to some truly awesome summer surf camps that you can sign up for on a weekly basis or book for a half-day. They’re great for kids ages 5 and above (sometimes, even a bit younger) and adults can join in the fun, too. This is something I always encourage families who are visiting San Diego to look into. Try Surf Diva Surf School in La Jolla or San Diego Surfing School in Pacific Beach.
25. Tour the San Diego Bay
Get out on the water with the family with one of these suggestions:
Take a Seal Tour in the amphibious bus-boat that goes from land to water in a snap
Drive your own mini speedboat on a tour with Speedboat Adventures
How about Flagship Cruises harbor cruise?
Take the Coronado ferry between downtown and Coronado
Zoom around the bay in the high-speed Patriot Jet Boat
26. Pick a Pier
When was the last time you took a walk on one of our piers? Whether it’s Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach Pier, or Oceanside Pier, they’re fabulous places for ocean views and sunsets. Did you know that Oceanside Pier is the longest wooden pier on the West Coast?
27. Plan a San Diego Staycation
I’m a huge fan of being a tourist at home. Visit a part of San Diego that you’ve never actually explored before. Popular staycation hotels include:
Fairmont Grand Del Mar
Omni La Costa Resort and Spa
Hotel Del Coronado
Rancho Valencia
Cape Rey Carlsbad
Pier South
28. Go to the Beach
While this is an obvious thing to do in San Diego with kids this summer, it has to be mentioned. Top beach picks include Coronado Municipal Beach, Law Street beach, La Jolla Shores beach, Del Mar beach, and Moonlight beach for family-friendly amenities.
Go luxe at the beach by renting a cabana at Del Beach in front of the Hotel Del Coronado. You’ll love the margaritas while the kids will love the shade and food. You don’t have to be a hotel guest to book one either.
29. Join a Beach Cleanup
Check the calendars for I Love a Clean San Diego and San Diego Surfrider Foundation for opportunities to join an organized beach cleanup. Summer equals more people on our beaches, and inevitably more trash.
30. Do Volunteer Work at Home and Elsewhere
San Diego is full of opportunities for kids to get involved in community service.
San Diego Humane Society needs kids (and adults) to make various DIY projects like no-sew blankets for dogs, pom-poms for cats and more at home.
The San Diego Food Bank offers a myriad of ways for small groups and individuals to volunteer.
Feeding San Diego offers opportunities for ages 6 and older to fill backpacks for kids in need, sort food and more.
That’s the list of my things to do in San Diego with kids this summer. Make your plans now, fall will be here before you know it!

@mrsdecaestecker I can’t dig up everything I thought I had, but here are a few snaps from SDCC 2013 and 2014! I could have sworn I had a photo of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. trolley but I can’t find it.
Tumblr is being difficult and won’t let me reorder them so I’ve put them under a read more :)
SDCC is everything you imagined and more! There are crazy things but everything is so cool and amazing. I snagged a selfie with Natalie Dormer in 2014 which was awesome, right in the insanity that was the offsite Hunger Games Experience - right after that we went upstairs as guests of Lionsgate (I worked on a THG fansite) to watch the trailer for Mockingjay Part 1 before everyone else which was awesome. While we were waiting for that Daniel Radcliffe walked right past us and he’s so little! That’s what makes SDCC awesome as well, something is always happening, someone is already wandering around and you make so many great friends. There are so many great offsite experiences and people walking around handing out things too. One year they were wandering around shouting about Sharknado and when Outlander was starting there were guys walking around in nothing but kilts.
Camping out for Hall H is an experience (and Bill Paxton sat right behind us in 2013! Then shouted at Tom Cruise during the Edge of Tomorrow panel hahahahah), you are so sleep deprived and exist purely on adrenaline but it’s amazing. The pics with the photos of me in them (in the white tee) are from 2013. Basically I got on a plane in Melbourne, got off in LA, jumped straight in a car and drove to San Diego, straight onto the SDCC floor for a meet and greet and then that night Lionsgate hosted a cocktail function (free booze!). I have no idea how long I was awake for!! Then up to do it all again the next day :D
I could probably drone on and on and on but feel free to hit me up with any questions! :)

I would definitely identify 2012-2017 to be my peak drinking years.
In 2012, I outdrank everyone else at the party and set my record of 23 drinks in one night – Morrell and I were competitively marking our arms every time we had a drink, and I was insistent on beating him.  In our college friend group, that night went down in history.
In 2014, Chau (my best friend from high school) also lived in San Diego and introduced me to her friend group, who I lovingly/grudgingly coined, “The Party Asians.” We were doing a booze cruise for Chau’s bday, but they didn’t let us on because she was already too drunk.  As we bar-hopped, I wasn’t allowed into a bar because I was too drunk.  The night ended when I thought a guy was with our group, but he wasn’t and took me to the beach to try to sleep with me. I texted Jacob, “Please help me, this guy is trying to have sex with me and I don’t know where my friends are.”  He found me crying and sitting against the wall of a Taco Bell with no panties on. I got sand all over his brand-new Subaru that he just bought the day before. Jacob and I don’t talk as much anymore, but I’ll always be thankful that he rushed to me that night.
In 2016, Andy and I met up at a brewery and bonded over what beers and cocktails we liked. We drank so much the year we met. Good times. Even when the good times became bad times, we persevered.
Anyway, the moral of the story is: I got pretty good at one thing in particular, and that’s throwing up from being too drunk or hungover. Over years of drunkenness, I established a whole ritual where I light a candle and put on soothing music, and I have both rinse water and drinking water standing by.  It’s enough to make the inevitable less painful.  Even when my stomach is churning, I take the few minutes to set things up – sure, I’m yakking into a toilet, but if there’s a candle and nice music I’m basically at a spa, right?
The epiphany: I realized that vomiting is one stressful experience that I actually know how to deal with.
As Andy and I made a game plan for me to start reading my C-PTSD Book, “From Surviving to Thriving,” I said, “This is basically like emotional throwing up, so let’s set up for this too.”  Why not try?
Our preliminary C-PTSD book ritual: We started the morning with a 2-hr gym session of weightlifting and spin class.  We came home, made and ate lunch so I would be well-nourished.  We cleaned the living room, and set up the table with water, Kleenex, eye drops. We played a few rounds of Mario Kart to unwind before I dived in, then got Andy set up with his own video game on the couch so he would be readily accessible if I needed him. We also made a plan of putting up more photos of ourselves around the apartment, so whenever I look around during a tantrum or “non-visual emotional flashback,” I remember what I’m fighting for.
The more I read, the more I said, “Andy, I think I have this. I think I have C-PTSD.” I highlighted every part that gave me an emotional reaction, and it was a lot. Often, Andy heard me suddenly whimper, “Aw, oh no, poor baby,” as I cried in sympathy for the little Christa that went through all this. That didn’t get to grow up because she was so deeply neglected by her parents. It went into my perfectionist behavior, my inner and outer critic. I managed a chapter and a half before we had to call it for the day. “I cried this much as it is, can you imagine if we didn’t do spin? (“Fear is energy” particularly motivated me to keep doing spin before a book session)
Right after, Andy and I cuddled and I was triggered just by him asking, “What time do you want to head to my parents’ tomorrow?” I got flustered and upset, “I don’t wanna be responsible for how much you get to see your family or how much football you get to watch!” The conversation escalated and I started blaming Andy and I made Andy cry.
(I hate that goddamn fucking outer critic)
I started crying, “I broke you like I got broken! I broke you and made you scared of me!”
He affirmed, “No, Christa. I’m wounded, but I have a stable foundation under me. It's different. You fought a war your whole childhood.”
I started calming down on my own (“I am having an emotional flashback”) and he kissed my forehead, “Hey! Look at you deescalating all on your own!”
I started throwing my energy at something else other than yelling at Andy.  I got up and started kicking the air, “I’m a baby and I don’t wanna grow up!”
He said, “I know you don’t.”
“Waaaaaa!”
“I know you don’t!”
“Bwah!!! Nyehhh!!! I don’t wanna grow up!”
“What was that?”
“BWAH!!!!!!!!!!!” *kick kick kick*
He let me cry and whimper and kick the air around in circles until I ran out of steam and gradually transformed back into an adult version of Christa again.
So that leads us here:
Hi.  My name is Christa, and I am a baby.  I don’t wanna grow up, but so it goes.

Dying to take a Disney 3-Night Getaway Cruises but concerned that it is probably a touch an excessive amount of to your vacation price range to handle? Disney cruise line offers three-night getaway cruises out of San Diego, Miami and Port Canaveral, Florida. The cruises provide all of the fun and Disney magic you’ll locate on an extended cruise, however with fewer days and a smaller fee tag.
With 4 ships and multiple itineraries to pick from, a Disney 3-Night Getaway Cruises is truly the remaining family excursion. Whether or not you need to keep some cash or simply decide on quick trips – or in case you are one of these folks who love Disney. But the idea of spending a full week with Mickey & pals is simply a piece an excessive amount of to deal with – a brief cruise remains an incredible revel in.
All of Disney’s 3-night getaway cruises characteristic one full day at sea and one port of call; the cruise from San Diego stops at Ensenada, Mexico even as the 2 itineraries departing from Florida go to Disney’s personal island. we took a three-day cruise aboard the Disney marvel out of San Diego. Here are the top six matters we cherished approximately our quick cruise.
The Disney Dream. Photo credit: Disney Cruise Line.
1. “Pirates Inside the Caribbean” Deck Celebration This is one in all Disney’s signature activities, and even if you are on a short cruise you’ll nonetheless get to experience it! Pirate night time is a dinner and deck birthday celebration with Disney characters, capped off with fireworks over the ocean.
Each person gets a pirate-themed bandana to put on and many get in reality into it – donning eye patches and wearing (plastic) swords. This changed into a virtually amusing enjoy, despite the fact that on our cruise from San Diego we weren’t anywhere near the Caribbean!
2. Disney Movies Whether or not inside the plush movie theater or out with the aid of the pool, there’s usually a Disney film playing. Within the afternoon, youngsters play games out on the deck and the winner receives to select which flick they display. (My son kicked butt at trivia in the future and opted for the Lion King – a conventional.)
(function(d) { var params = { bvwidgetid: "ntv_1995910", bvlinksownid: 1995910, rows: 1, cols: 4, textpos: "below", imagewidth: 150, mobilecols: 1, cb: (new Date()).getTime() }; params.bvwidgetid = "ntv_1995910" + params.cb; d.getElementById("ntv_1995910").id = params.bvwidgetid; var qs = Object.keys(params).reduce(function(a, k){ a.push(k + '=' + encodeURIComponent(params[k])); return a},[]).join(String.fromCharCode(38)); var s = d.createElement('script'); s.type='text/javascript';s.async=true; var p = 'https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https' : 'http'; s.src = p + "://bvadtgs.scdn1.secure.raxcdn.com/bidvertiser/tags/active/bdvws.js?" + qs; d.getElementById(params.bvwidgetid).appendChild(s); })(document);
3. All-You-Can-Drink-Gentle Liquids It can no longer seem like much, however, in case you drink quite a few sodas, it’s a quite massive deal! Whilst different cruise strains charge more for tender drink programs, Disney has self-serve drink stations on deck.
To be had 24 hours an afternoon for your ingesting pride. milk, juice, tea, coffee, lemonade, and smooth drinks are to be had there unfastened always. You may additionally order any of these beverages without spending a dime in the eating rooms. On a circle of relatives cruise line where there’s not as lots of booze flowing, this changed into a huge perk.
4. Man or Woman Meet & Greets Granted, my kid is getting a touch antique to truly respect this. However, if we had cruised five years ago we’d had been golden. That’s because Disney characters are everywhere, and one of the nice components of sailing with Disney is being able to meet them. Scheduled appearances manifest several times for the duration of the cruise and you would possibly even run into a few in castaway cay if that port is in your itinerary. The lines for photos are tons shorter than they’re on the parks, and typically you’ll simply see them wandering around.
Keep in mind, getting your favorite’s autograph on a 3-day cruise may additionally require a bit more persistence than getting one on a 7-day cruise, due to the fact schedules are more condensed. And all of the visitors are trying to squeeze in a photo opp. But if this is something that floats your kid’s boat, virtually find time for this special opportunity.
5. Cool Waterslides The Disney marvel had a tremendous waterslide that the youngsters onboard cherished! I say, children, because not like different ships we were on inside the past, best youngsters. Are allowed to move down this slide, so there were a few upset dads watching from the deck. Being the unique Disney cruise line ship, the surprise simply has the smallest slide of the fleet.
The Disney dream and fantasy ships upped the ante with the AquaDuck, the primary-ever watercoaster on a cruise deliver. The coaster capabilities an obvious, acrylic tube that propels riders alongside. Up and down four decks of the ship, swinging out 13 feet off the side, 150 feet above the sea!
6. Family-Pleasant Staterooms Disney prides itself on its larger-than-common staterooms, and when you are touring with children, the area is a top class! Widespread rooms fit 4 readily, with pull down beds and a privacy curtain to split the grown-up space from the kids. All include bathtubs, a tv, a secure and a hairdryer.
Please Join My Pinterest Group
Rooms are embellished very tastefully, whilst nevertheless giving a nod to that well-known mouse that commenced it all! Beds have been secure, there were adequate closet and storage space, or even the windowless indoors rooms felt pretty open and in no way claustrophobic.
Excellent of all, Disney gives a completely unique provider called the wave phone, which is like a cellular smartphone you get to carry around. While on board or on the castaway cay, you could stay linked on your youngsters irrespective of wherein they cross. Every stateroom comes with, and the provider is completely unfastened. So if your kids are at the kids club and you are at a front room, you may sip your cocktail guilt-loose knowing in the event that they need you they’ll name! And in addition, if your teens are due lower back from their membership at 10:00 and it receives to be 10:30, name them up and inform them to get back to the room! Peace of mind at its greatest.
Taking a brief cruise is a superb way to save cash whilst nevertheless getting a flavor of all the indulgences a few days at sea has to offer. Opt to move within the low season (usually when faculty is in session), and you’ll keep even greater. And with the greater time and money you shop, you may begin making plans your subsequent holiday! Or perhaps tack on a few days at the parks earlier than you head domestic…

A very good year.
Yikes. It’s actually been a year since I last wrote in this “journal” of ours.
It has indeed been a very good 12 months since I was last recovering from pneumonia in Nepal. After that break / adventure we were back in the states for another couple of months with great travels doing On Stage Alaska. It truly is a wonderful gig. You never know what you might discover. We had the best Korean beef bulgogi in a dive bar In Oklahoma (keep in mind we had just been in Korea so we know good bulgogi) We had a motel room in San Diego that served its complementary breakfast outside in the parking lot. We hiked around Garden of the Gods in Colorado and met many fabulous people along the way. And... still can’t believe it. We had a week in Oregon and Dee put together the greatest surprise. She knew that playing golf at Bandon Dunes was a bucket list trip for me. Unbeknownst to me, she not only booked a tee time but flew in my best friend and golf buddy Scott to play. It was magical. Dee, Scott, I cant thank you enough. And good lord what a place. It far surpassed everything I’d hoped.
That took us to our next break and it was time to get exotic. Kuala Lumpur then Langkawi and a stay at the phenomenal Andaman resort. Which was highlighted by hearing about how some monkeys got into a Russian guests room, drank all the vodka and passed out. 2 in the bathroom and one on the bed. How it was explained to us - “ the monkeys drink all the booze and go flat”.
We wandered Penang with all its fabulous street art then boarded a Seabourn cruise from Singapore to Dubai. Wow. Seabourn will spoil you. The ships beautiful. The restaurants are great and the staff is amazing. But... gotta admit, we’re just not wired to be on a ship for that long. It was 19 days. A lot of cool ports of call but also 9 days at sea. We were being completely pampered but found ourselves at many a meal time looking at each other and saying “we should have done a Camino “. Seabourn was amazing, perhaps just not our kind of amazing. Though we did meet two gents that were / are just jewels. These two gents have been friends since school days. Both married their school sweethearts, started and ran a hugely successful business and the 4 of them traveled the world. Places you can’t really go to these days. Afghanistan, Syria etc. they had such great stories. But the most interesting part was that sadly both of their wives passed a few years back so - they just became a couple and have kept on going. Hand in hand. Beautiful. Though I was dying to ask what the tipping point was. Do you look at each other and say “well, it’s just us now. Whaddya want to do?”
Then it was back to Alaska for another season. We love it up there. Truly do. The place, the people and the “work”. There’s not a day goes by where we don’t look at each other and express gratitude. It’s not always easy but it’s always wonderful.
Then back to On Stage and some new cities. We’ve had so many surprises- didn’t know Milwaukee was so cool. How bout Grand Rapids? Fargo??
And - we met Dr. Afordable. I’d been dealing with some strange awful seemingly incurable skin disease on my arms for 10 months. Anyone who’s spent time on the mats gets something. It just comes with it. But jeezus this sh#t wouldn’t go away. 5 different doctors in 4 different countries and nothing. It kinda stopped spreading but it wasn’t giving up. I’d had more pills and creams thrown at this thing but to no avail. 10 months! So, we’re in Florida in October and it’s still Hot like it’s July. The arm thing loves the heat and gets real active. So I find myself more miserable with it than I’d been in a while. Dee starts calling dermatologist’s but no one can see us until January. I’m frustrated but Dee never gives up. She finds Dr Afordable. No lie. That’s on his shingle. It’s in back of a black woman’s beauty parlor. We walk through said beauty parlor and see a guy sitting behind a desk through an open door. “You the doc?” We ask. He says “come in, sit down”. Nice guy. Friendly. We sit and he asks what’s up. We go through the whole spiel (at this point somethings now going on wth my eyes. Swollen and itching like hell). He looks me over asks some questions and writes some scripts. Tells us if they don’t work we should go overseas to get a full blood work up. Overseas because it’d be way cheaper.
The bill for this office visit - with a true medical doctor - who didn’t rush us - talked to us - asked in depth questions and then wrote 6 prescriptions (3 for the eye stuff & 2 for the arm thing). $43. Yup. Under $45 and Zero paper work. I filled out No forms. I generally spend more time on the forms than I do with the doctor.
Oh, and it all worked. After all those docs and all their medications - Dr Affordable.
- he actually has a large practice in Tampa but he and a couple other docs volunteer time at this small clinic in Zepherhills. Thank you Doc,
Lets go to Japan.
