i was wondering your thoughts on jaune as a character tbh. today i was thinking about atla and where it succeeded versus where rwby failed (especially because miles luna himself has compared rwby to atla multiple times).

one thing i disliked about rwby is that all four of the girls are super important in some way. ruby has silver eyes, weiss is the SDC heiress (richest company in the world), blake is WF leader’s daughter (also from a wealthy family), yang’s mom is a maiden. none of them are normal.

in atla, we have aang (the avatar), katara (who’s the last southern tribe waterbender… kinda?), toph (rich family daughter), zuko (firelord’s son) and sokka… who is completely normal. i like how they have a normal guy in atla which makes him relatable to the viewer.

the problem is in rwby, this normal guy is jaune. who ends up sticking along in the plot and being forced by the writers to be in situations which get him hate from the fndm. miles said jaune is partially inspired by sokka (dorky funny strategist type) but at the same time it means jnpr has to be part of the rwby adventures for jaune to be around. which makes people dislike jaune even more.

i kinda rambled but i was wondering yours thoughts on him? where did he fail where sokka succeeded and so on in your opinion?

Not to mention the inclusion of Oscar who is basically Normal Guy 2.0 before Ozpin came along, but yeah.

Hypothetically, Blake would have been a great everyman type for Team RWBY had she not been revealed to be of noble birth. Had she been written more as an orphan left to fight on the wilds outside the Kingdoms, her humble origin would have been a good contrast to the rest of Team RWBY, and grounded her with the audience within the team.

But in regards to Jaune, I've had some discussions on my server about him, and he's a tough nut to crack. Speaking of his failure within the context of canon, there is a definitely a disconnect between him being essentially a fifth main character and being a part of the B-team.

Another shortcoming is that he often, as many have and will attest, steals moments much better suited for other characters. Him vs. Cinder and killing Penny come to mind, both of which would vastly benefit Ruby more. And I think it's because he doesn't have an arc to speak of, ironically given his name.

For Sokka, he has a very distinct arc and dynamic within the Gaang that doesn't really overlap with the others. Neither Aang, Katara nor Toph are natural skeptics, nor are they non-benders, nor do they have an interest in technology or strategy. And his actual arc revolves around learning to be a man - not immature machismo, but responsibility and virtue. This alone lets Sokka occupy a niche that makes him valuable to the audience, because his unique experience is valuable.

However, Jaune, like Oscar, has many aspects that feel poached from other characters. His struggles as a leader steps on the toes of Ruby's arc as a team leader. His implied backstory as being from a line of famous Hunters can overlap with Weiss and the Schnee legacy (though due to how vague this detail is, there's room to play with this to make it more distinct). His niche as a strategist/tactician also overlaps with Ruby, leaving fans to headcanon distinctions between them, such as making Jaune a more "big picture tactician", while Ruby is a more "boots on the ground" strategist.

But the problem, as seen, lies in the fact that he offers very little to the audience, because what he offers, other characters can too. But because he does a little bit of everything, he is also always a little bit relevant to any situation, inflating his presence but not his importance in the show.

I've seen a post that posits that Jaune was at his most likeable in Volume 7, because there he was playing the role he should be to Team RWBY: a supporting character. While I do agree somewhat with this, as he was at his most likeable, being a sort of anchor trying to stay positive for everyone (nevermind that this is a trait overlapping with Ruby), he was also pretty... harmless?

I suppose it's because I've grown used to his extended presence, but him actually being more in the background also made him feel... kinda basic? There was really nothing too offensive, but also nothing terribly interesting for him to fall back on. He has no unique dynamic to bounce off of, no unique niche to fill. He's just kind of... there, occupying whatever vague role the story needs for him. And that makes him fairly forgettable; likeable only because he was no longer overstaying his welcome.

As for possible solutions, if I had to rework him from the ground up, I'd probably take Jaune in one of two directions, if not a bit of both:

A pampered noble. Lean more into his sheltered upbringing and weak start. He's from a long line of Hunters but for whatever reason was not raised as one or just lacks talent. Like Weiss but without any of the bite.

An underdog. This would work more if he was from more humble origins, but basically a no-name dude trying to work his way from the bottom.

Personally, I would lean more towards Option 1, if only because Oscar is clearly of humble birth and I would want to keep them as distinct from each other as possible. But for both, I would emphasize his underdog vibe as a weak fighter, as that is the one aspect he has in the series that everyone else doesn't.

Oscar would be weak too, but that's because he has no experience nor need to fight up until he joins the plot. But for Jaune, he would just be plain bad. He's bad at fighting even when he wants to be good, given his lineage, and that already creates a solid arc for him to work towards.

While Oscar would be fine with not being a fighter, it would be a source of a massive inferiority complex for Jaune, which totally checks out with how he behaves throughout Volume 1 and Jaunedice - sometimes even sabotaging himself because he's too stubborn to swallow his pride and admit he's weak and needs help, because a scion of a reputable Hunter family shouldn't be this weak.

As for his dynamic with the rest of the cast, knowing this, I'd probably make him incredibly weak, but also incredibly determined. While other characters can be determined too, Jaune would be so to an absurd amount, because he has to make up for his weakness with sheer will and persistence. If he falls down, he would get up more times than everyone else because he falls down more than everyone else. When faced with a problem, his natural inclination would just be to throw himself at it until either side yields.

This would be compatible with him having lots of Aura too. He's like a rock - uncomplicated in nature and immovable when it counts. Rather than make him a tactician, I'd make him the source of morale of the cast. People would be inspired by Jaune because even if he doesn't contribute much to a fight, he'll always be the last one standing; and seeing him would encourage the others to stand back up and continue fighting.

STUPID STUFF

WF THOUGHTS (4/16/24).

Every day, companies unveil useless new products and ask us to buy them. The companies aren’t stupid. People buy the useless products. The stupid folks are the buyers. Do you buy stupid stuff?

Did you know that there’s a product called an “iPotty”? It’s a training potty for children that has an attached holder for an iPad. The idea is that Jack or Jill will sit on the potty for a longer period of time if they can simultaneously play with an iPad. That’s so stupid on so many levels. It’s asinine.

Speaking of useless Apple stuff, did you know that you can buy an iPhone case with a built-in coffee cup holder. The circular cup holder flips out to hold your cup and it folds flat against the phone when you don’t need it. Totally ridiculous!!

The other day I visited a grocery store. I walked past the bananas. Near the bananas, there was a rack full of “banana slicers.” You’re supposed to stick your banana into this little contraption, close the top, and then be amazed by the perfectly uniform slices that are revealed when you open the top. What a useless product. Isn’t cutting a banana a very easy task? Who needs a machine to cut a banana?

I’m a big fan of Crocs. They make a great sandal. The Crocs sandal is indestructible, and it feels good. The Crocs sandal was a great invention. It is a useful product.

Of course, the Crocs folks couldn’t control themselves. They knew that stupid people would buy other types of Crocs footwear. They were right. They invented a Crocs boot. If you need a pair of boots, buy real boots. Croc boots are dumb. In my book, Crocs are supposed to be like sandals. I can’t believe that folks buy Crocs boots, but they do. The same folks probably also buy iPottys and banana slicers.

Let me finish with something that’s really, really, really stupid. I’m not making this up. Crocs and Pringles- -the potato chip people- -just collaborated on a new product. It’s a Crocs boot that has a built-in ankle holster that’s designed to hold a can of Pringles. Why in the world do we need that? Isn’t it a totally useless product? Of course, idiots immediately bought the entire inventory of these “limited edition” boots that sell for $100. Because of those idiots, we’ll probably see more junk from Crocs in the future. If people will buy ridiculous Crocs, the folks at Crocs will make more ridiculous stuff. You won’t see me wearing the “Pringles X Crocs.”

I lead a simple life. I don’t buy useless stuff. Please do the same. If we stop buying stupid stuff, manufacturers will stop producing stupid stuff. We don’t need running shoes that include a pouch for pickles.

Dancing has been simplified this time around: instead of using an OoT-esque code system, you just hold the button til the right formation, and then release. Shantae: RR's controls are as simple as it's predecessor's: you can jump (B), Whip (Y), Dance (X), Use Items (R), and do a backwards dash (L). Just then, Risky drops from the ceiling and swipes it. It turns out that the Mystery Item is an Old Oil Lamp, which Mimic tries to hide and ignore. At the speech, Mimic is given the honor of presenting the Mystery Auction Item, which is encased in hollow rock. Shantae heads to her Uncle Mimic's presentation at the Relic Hunter's Expo after being told by her friend Bolo that she's late. Shantae: Risky's Revenge takes place presumably a couple months after the orginal. GBA, Wii, DS, PSP, all didn't make it of the design floor, until last year that is, where Risky's Revenge was announced, and many rejoiced. Matt Bozon, Creative Lead at WF, spent years trying to revive the series. It became a smash hit.however, hardly anyone bought it. Shantae went over well with many review sites, getting 9's and 10's left and right. It was very akin to how the Ocarina was used in the 3D Zeldas, but, instead of pressing the buttons at any rate, you had to wait for the beat to press the correct button. What made Shantae unique, however, was the Dance gimmick. Controls were simple: You could jump, whip, run, and use items bought from the shop. Shantae, a Half-Genie, vows to to recover her Uncle's discovery and bring peace back to Sequin Land. The plot was simple: Risky Boots the Lady Pirate/Leader of the Tinkerbat Army has stolen an ancient Steam Engine to use for a Doomsday device. The plot was simple: Risky Boots If you haven't played the original, Shantae was a Metroidvania released in 2002 by Wayforward Technologies. Sansa got a crown and you guys have been bitter ever since. Sansa's decisions didn't make sense? She's the only ruler who cared about food for her people. She was a better queen than Jon about the North's independence. They wanted her instead of Jon. Stay bitter.

I hate talking about the trash show but here we go. Show Sansa's decisions once she gets agency in season 6: - Lies to Jon about meeting LF and decides to send Brienne south to her uncle to get an army that's only loyal to her as per LF's advice. - Wants to ask the Karstarks for help and it's Davos who ends up explaining to her why this will not work - Is unable to get a single Northern house to support her despite being Ned Stark's daughter. - Keeps demanding that Jon ask for her advice in planning the battle and when he then asks her she says she doesn't know 🤣🤣! - Writes to LF for help, does not inform Jon about this. - Keeps info of Vale army from Jon because she wanted the glory and credit of the win leading to thousands of loyal Northmen and Freefolk dying. - Undermines Jon Snow in front of the Northern houses repeatedly despite Jon telling her not to do so and an united front is necessary. - Wants to punish the Karstark and Umber children for what their fathers did. Umber and Karstark later help in the fight against the White Walkers while Glover does not. Sansa is once again wrong here and Jon is right. [Note: When Jon comes back in season 8, the Umber kid ends up addressing Sansa as leader instead of Jon. This is what I mean by the writing that keeps rewarding Sansa despite her shitty decisions. Logically we would think that Umber would support the guy who wanted them to keep their houses instead of support the Lady who wanted to kick them out. But it's the other way around because Sansa is awesome like that. She doesn't have to earn her loyalties and victories like Jon and Dany did] - She has no solution on how to defeat the White Walkers and yet complains about every possible solution Jon comes up with. She's the equivalent of Book Bowen Marsh and co. - Jon then leaves her in charge and she gets jealous of Brienne and Arya's friendship and tries to get Arya executed on LF's advice until Bran intervenes. - Continues undermining Jon to get the support of the houses for herself something which Arya notices - Being petty to Dany. Antagonizing the queen for no reason - again, in the books such behavior would have seen her exiled by Jon or executed as a traitor by Dany. She keeps getting a free pass on the show to continue being shitty with no consequences - Tattling on Dany to Tyrion, breaks sworn oaths in front of the Old Gods. She would have been killed off in the books for this alone. Book Old Gods don't play around. Her 'good' decisions are also just bad writing: - Executing LF is great, something she could have done at the start of season 7. Instead she waited an entire season, allowed him to create misunderstanding and mischief and it took Bran stepping in for her to execute LF! Smartest person indeed. - Food. Her solution is for everyone in the North to bring food to WF. Problem solved! In the books, there is food scarcity everywhere in the North. She also has no issues with feeding the Vale army because they are loyal to her but complains about feeding Dany's army despite the Dothraki and Unsullied being there to help them. An episode later she berates Dany for wanting to leave WF for KL- so now she has food? Stupid, selfish and xenophobic to boot. - Sansa teaches armorers how to make armor and lectures warrior Yohn Royce on the importance of castles as a first line of defense. Poor book Yohn Royce lol. What an insult to the character. - The show has her lecturing Dany , who has commanded armies for like 6 seasons, that her soldiers need rest. Basically their solution to smart Sansa is to make everyone around her dumb and give away their skillsets, that they earned over several seasons, to Sansa. The only reason she's seen as smart is because characters are given dialogue where they say she's smart that's all. D&D use their mouthpiece and audience favorite Tyrion to shove through their bad writing - Sansa is smart because Tyrion says so, Dany is evil because Tyrion says so etc. However, just looking at her actions without other characters praising her, she's one of the stupidest characters on the show. She's also clearly in it for herself, wants the throne and power, undermines her family, plots against them again and again - all this happens on the show and yet at the same time the show tries to frame her as queen of the people and being selfless and compassionate. Contradictory writing that makes a hodgepodge mess of the character. This is the end result of the showrunners sidelining the other Starks and trying to shove Sansa into characterization and plot that don't belong to her in the books

Anyone with a show Sansa icon/avatar makes me automatically disregard anything they have to say about the show or books.

Do you think Sansa will be QitN or atleast Lady of Winterfell in the books?You said that out of all the Starklings,she has the most thematic connection to Northern Independence when none of the Stark Bannerman are backing her but there are factions backing Arya,Jon,Rickon and presumably Bran in the future (doesn't matter considering he is the actual heir).Sansa's backing comes from a non Northerner(LF& hopefully Vale Houses) .Could you elaborate on the Northern independence connection to Sansa?

Hi! So I don’t really have time to do like a complete search of the books for you, but here’s what sticks to my mind.

Hints in Sansa’s arc she will be Lady of Winterfell:

By ASOS, it is clear that she will never have love BECAUSE of her claim to Winterfell. Or at least, it becomes clear to Sansa. People want her because she is the key to the North. While this is very sad, it is something that she has come to terms with and is now fully aware of. She cannot just be a young girl in love — she is heir to Winterfell, and there’s stuff that comes along with that.

Sansa’s own “fall” is tied to the fall of Winterfell: “He is the Lord of the Eyrie, after all, you must never forget that. You are well born, and the Starks of Winterfell were always proud, but Winterfell has fallen and you are really just a beggar now, so put that pride aside. Gratitude will better become you, in your present circumstances. Yes, and obedience. My son will have a grateful and obedient wife." In her final chapter of ASOS, Sansa rebels against this idea Lysa is putting in her head: “I will tell my aunt that I don't want to marry Robert. Not even the High Septon himself could declare a woman married if she refused to say the vows. She wasn't a beggar, no matter what her aunt said. She was thirteen, a woman flowered and wed, the heir to Winterfell.”

The hardcore foreshadowing of Sansa literally rebuilding Winterfell in the Snow, the iconic scene that forms the final chapter of ASOS and begins her post-King’s Landing arc of rising again: “The snow fell and the castle rose. Two walls ankle-high, the inner taller than the outer. Towers and turrets, keeps and stairs, a round kitchen, a square armory, the stables along the inside of the west wall. It was only a castle when she began, but before very long Sansa knew it was Winterfell. She found twigs and fallen branches beneath the snow and broke off the ends to make the trees for the godswood. For the gravestones in the lichyard she used bits of bark. Soon her gloves and her boots were crusty white, her hands were tingling, and her feet were soaked and cold, but she did not care. The castle was all that mattered. Some things were hard to remember, but most came back to her easily, as if she had been there only yesterday. The Library Tower, with the steep stonework stair twisting about its exterior. The gatehouse, two huge bulwarks, the arched gate between them, crenellations all along the top . . .”

Sansa is biding her time and playing along with Petyr IN ORDER TO SURVIVE. Just as she has done so far in the books. But she knows the truth. “I am not your daughter, she thought. I am Sansa Stark, Lord Eddard's daughter and Lady Catelyn's, the blood of Winterfell.” She has absolutely no interest in being around Petyr — she wants to flee but where does she go?! “Littlefinger and Lord Petyr looked so very much alike. She would have fled them both, perhaps, but there was nowhere for her to go. Winterfell was burned and desolate, Bran and Rickon dead and cold. Robb had been betrayed and murdered at the Twins, along with their lady mother. Tyrion had been put to death for killing Joffrey, and if she ever returned to King's Landing the queen would have her head as well.”

Obviously there are schemes in order to get her WF back. The guy who launched the war of the 5 Kings and now has the only fresh army in Westeros wants nothing more than to give her the gift of Winterfell.

The most important hint, though, is that the man who has been set up to take WF back (Stannis) is told by Jon that WF belongs to Sansa. Stannis finds this ridiculous and is mad at Jon for saying such a thing. Of course, Stannis won’t actually retake WF. Narratively that’s a shit idea. Jon will, likely with Sansa. And will Jon declare himself the Lord of Winterfell? No. He’s already said that belongs to Sansa.

In terms of connecting Sansa to Northern independence, Sansa is beaten every time the North wins in the court of Joffrey. She is also sacrificed by Robb in order for the North to achieve independence — he will not rescue or trade Lannister, because his men wouldn’t like it, and Robb wants Northern independence. George sets Jon up as a Corn King in the books — the raven like spells it out in Jon’s chapters by saying ‘Corn’ and then ‘King’ over and over lol. Look up the Corn King in mythology. It’s about a ruler sacrificing his own body for the good of his people. GRRM plays with this with Jon and the wildlings. But in another way, he does so with Sansa and the North. Sansa is sacrificed to the North can be free. It’s dark. But Sansa subverts the myth, and escapes, and is reborn as Alayne (and then will return as Sansa, obvi).

Sansa is married to Tyrion in order to keep the North subservient to the Lannisters. The North sees itself as independent, and Sansa is the heir to the North (before Robb passes her over for Jon). If Sansa is under the thumb of the Lannisters, the North simply cannot be independent if Robb dies and Sansa is therefore the ruler of the North. A good way to resolve this is Sansa being the heir to the KITN and then NOT being under the thumb of the Lannisters. If we look at the fate of the direwolves as foreshadowing, Ned makes sure Lady’s skin is taken and buried in WF. "All that way," Ned affirmed. "The Lannister woman shall never have this skin." Sansa as QITN and the Lannisters humbled just makes the most sense to me.

As for the other people who rally around Rickon and Jeyne Poole, Jeyne is not Arya and Rickon has yet to emerge. We don’t know if he will or if when he does, how long he will live. Arya herself will likely not try to rally anyone around her because she has no desire to be Queen. If Jon does become king, it is possible he lists Sansa as his successor. Sansa can also prove herself during the Long Night and be made Queen at the end. Her arc shows her becoming a leader and a lady.

There was something missing. Winterfell felt strangely empty, but Jon could not quite put his finger on why.

His day was so busy, that it was hard to think. He felt pulled in all directions, between the demands of the Northern Lords and Daenerys Targaryen he had little time to do anything but put out fires.

He was constantly placating Daenerys, stroking her ego and making sure she did not become so offended by the mistrust of the North that she decided to leave or use her dragons.

Exhaustion and stress plagued his every moment, whether he was asleep or awake. He wanted to go to Sansa and divulge everything that had happened, to explain every choice he had made and have her reassure him that he did the right thing.

He wanted to go to someone who understood what he was doing and why, someone who would not judge him for it. He could have gone to Satin, he supposed, but his true lover did not have the same knowledge of the politics that were at play as Sansa did.

It was as his thoughts turned to his sister that Jon realised what was wrong: he had not seen Sansa all day.

He had not seen her bright hair as they broke their fast or at dinner, despite her choice to eat every meal with the whole of Winterfell so that they might see that their Lady are not different food from them. Nor had he seen her attend any one of the war council meetings that had run that day, although he had put her absence down to her being needed elsewhere as so often was the case. She was often busy with settling in the refugees, or dealing with arguments between the different lords and kingdoms that had come to their aid, all on top of ensuring the correct running of the keep. It was entirely possible she was the busiest person in Winterfell on any given day.

Jon felt a hint of concern through when no one he spoke to had seen Sansa that day. Not Arya, nor Brienne, nor any of the maids. None had seen her that day, while the kitchen said that she had not asked for any food. Her personal maid said she had not been called upon, and that Sansa had seemed to be in a melancholy mood the previous day, although she had not said why.

The concern grew at the maid’s words, and it solidified his resolve to speak to Sansa, to check that she was safe and well.

He knocked on the door to Sansa’s chamber, but there was no response. The wood was cold to the touch, colder than usual, as though there had been no fire burning in the grate.

The concern bloomed into a worry that started to fill his chest, a fear that his sister was ill or injured.

He knocked again, louder and more urgently, his ears straining to hear any noise from within that would tell him how Sansa was.

But there was silence.

The worry turned into panic, a panic so severe that a ringing started to fill his ears.

His hands fumbled with the handle, making the heavy iron of it clatter loudly in the silence of the corridor. The door was not locked, but his panic was so great that it might well have been, so long did it take him to make the handle work as it should.

“Sansa!” He called, his eyes frantically scanning the room for signs of her, “Sansa!”

Her bed was made perfectly, looking as though it had not been touched. The grate was empty of even ash. No trinkets lay upon the sides, none of the books or papers that Jon knew Sansa liked to work on late into the night. There were no clothes upon the pegs, no boots on the rack.

There were no signs at all that Sansa had ever inhabited these chambers.

No signs, except a single slip of paper that lay atop the dressing table.

Frantic and fearful he looked to the slip, and found he had to read it thrice before the words took root in his mind.

‘I am sorry for any trouble I might have caused, but I found I was too weak to stay in a home where I received nothing but hatred and scorn. I have gone to seek somewhere where I might be so lucky to be treated with indifference; although that may be too kind for one such as me.

You need not send men after me, out of any sort of familial obligation, for I release you of such burden. Keep the resources you have in Winterfell where they are sorely needed.

Sansa of House Stark.’

Jon sank to his knees in despair, the note clutched in his hands. A sob left his throat and he looked to the ceiling as of it might give him answers.

Sansa was gone, she had felt unwanted and unloved. Sansa was gone, out into the North without the protector she deserved.

Anything could happen to her out there, bears or wolves, bandits or brigands. Cersei Lannister still had a price upon her head, and there were any number of Bolton or Frey men still out there who would happily hurt a Stark. Not to mention Euron Greyjoy who was famed for his brutality, or the Dothraki who Jon had seen leer at her already.

His little sister was in danger, the girl that Jon had sworn to protect twice: once over her cradle and again when they reunited at the Wall. And Jon was powerless to do anything about it, for he could not just abandon Winterfell and the oncoming war to bring her back.

Could he?

1 So, based on your latest posts, and because you take the time to explore things that have been on my mind lately: 1 Jon-Sansa reunion is foreshadowed in Jamie-Cersei meeting at the Sept over dead Tywin and Jamie's dream of his mother. 2. T-S wedding not annulled, T will press his claim. Horrible suspicion: Sansa forgot her bedding and her PoV is completely blurred. Her next PoV is when she escapes and she thinks she should tell T about her moodblood!

2 T never once denies that he bedded her. He thinks "I am not bedded" once but that's because he wants to be chosen and S doesn't want him. He did what Tywin wanted "bed her once". He'll probably press his claim to WF based on that. In Catelyn's chapter Robb says he'll take his head off for what he did. This foreshadow comes also in Ts chapters in ADWD. OMG, you make an excellent point! I think that GRRM planned something quite like this with the 5-year-gap he ended up having to scrap. Now it makes sense! I’ll put in some quotes below that show the hints.

It might still happen now. Obviously, not involving the actual wedding night, but as a “completely blurred” experience that involves Sansa (and probably Tyrion) at a point in the future. A point where Tyrion doesn’t care about being nice anymore. But for now, let’s look at what might have been.

Here’s where the hints come in after their wedding in ASOS:

For their wedding night, they had been granted the use of an airy bedchamber high in the Tower of the Hand. Tyrion kicked the door shut behind them. “There is a flagon of good Arbor gold on the sideboard, Sansa. Will you be so kind as to pour me a cup?” “Is that wise, my lord?” “Nothing was ever wiser. I am not truly drunk, you see. But I mean to be.” Sansa filled a goblet for each of them. It will be easier if I am drunk as well. She sat on the edge of the great curtained bed and drained half her cup in three long swallows. No doubt it was very fine wine, but she was too nervous to taste it. It made her head swim.

They both drink a wine that Tyrion has provided for them. Arbor Gold, he says. A different chapter with Shae suggests something else.

“We should go back,” he said reluctantly. “It must be near dawn. Sansa will be waking.” “You should give her dreamwine,” Shae said, “like Lady Tanda does with Lollys. A cup before she goes to sleep, and we could fuck in bed beside her without her waking.” She giggled. “Maybe we should, some night. Would m’lord like that?” Her hand found his shoulder, and began to knead the muscles there. “Your neck is hard as stone. What troubles you?”

Tyrion could not see his fingers in front of his face, but he ticked his woes off on them all the same. “My wife. (…) He had come to his last finger. “The face that stares back out of the water when I wash.”(ASOS, Tyrion)

She mentions the dreamwine and he gets tense as a stone, the thought of his wife troubles him and he can’t stand the look of his own face. Hmmm… (That last one is also a Tysha hint, but I digress.)

The pivotal moment at the wedding night:

She climbed onto the featherbed, conscious of his stare. A scented beeswax candle burned on the bedside table and rose petals had been strewn between the sheets. She had started to pull up a blanket to cover herself when she heard him say, “No.”

The cold made her shiver, but she obeyed. Her eyes closed, and she waited. After a moment she heard the sound of her husband pulling off his boots, and the rustle of clothing as he undressed himself. When he hopped up on the bed and put his hand on her breast, Sansa could not help but shudder. She lay with her eyes closed, every muscle tense, dreading what might come next. Would he touch her again? Kiss her? Should she open her legs for him now? She did not know what was expected of her.

“Sansa.” The hand was gone. “Open your eyes.” She had promised to obey; she opened her eyes. He was sitting by her feet, naked. Where his legs joined, his man’s staff poked up stiff and hard from a thicket of coarse yellow hair, but it was the only thing about him that was straight. “My lady,” Tyrion said, “you are lovely, make no mistake, but … I cannot do this. My father be damned. We will wait. The turn of a moon, a year, a season, however long it takes. Until you have come to know me better, and perhaps to trust me a little.” His smile might have been meant to be reassuring, but without a nose it only made him look more grotesque and sinister. (ASOS, Sansa)

This feels rewritten, doesn’t it? The sudden break, the sudden reprieve. It could just be Tyrion’s creeping conscience making him change his mind. Or it could be Sansa’s mind rewriting the moment. As the series stands now, it can be both. But this issue between them is so heavily referenced that it will have to come up again in the future, one way or the other. It was always meant to be important.

This is at the end of the wedding night chapter:

“On my honor as a Lannister,” the Imp said, “I will not touch you until you want me to.” It took all the courage that was in her to look in those mismatched eyes and say, “And if I never want you to, my lord?” His mouth jerked as if she had slapped him. “Never?” Her neck was so tight she could scarcely nod. “Why,” he said, “that is why the gods made whores for imps like me.” He closed his short blunt fingers into a fist, and climbed down off the bed. (ASOS, Sansa)

That’s some violent imagery for a kindly refusal to rape her, isn’t it? We all know what Lannister honor is worth (a bucket of…) and we see that Tyrion does feel entitled to her, or he wouldn’t react with dismay at her suggestion that she may never want him.

The chapter is followed by an Arya chapter describing Stoney Sept, the Battle of the Bells, and this comes up quickly:

More recent battles had been fought here as well, Arya thought from the look of the place. The town gates were made of raw new wood; outside the walls a pile of charred planks remained to tell what had happened to the old ones.

(…)

“When the westermen came through they raped the Huntsman’s wife and sister, put his crops to the torch, ate half his sheep, and killed the other half for spite. Killed six dogs too, and threw the carcasses down his well. A chewed-up corpse would be plenty good enough for him, I’d say. Me as well.” (ASOS, Arya)

Tyrion used that ugly “smash your portcullis” metaphor just in the chapter before. That’s not subtle.

Let’s look at two angles at Sansa’s POV, keeping in mind the dreamwine. One of the biggest hints that something bad happened (or will happen) to Sansa is in a TWOW sample chapter, “Mercy”. Arya will be “raped” by a dwarf on stage, in a play that’s about the Purple Wedding. Mercy is likely to play Sansa’s character.

She had fastened the shutters back so the morning sun might wake her. But there was no sun outside the window of Mercy's little room, only a wall of shifting grey fog. The air had grown chilly... and a good thing, else she might have slept all day. It would be just like Mercy to sleep through her own rape. Gooseprickles covered her legs. Her coverlet had twisted around her like a snake. She unwound it, threw the blanket to the bare plank floor and padded naked to the window. Braavos was lost in fog. (TWOW, Mercy)

The Tyrion chapter with Shae and the dreamwine is followed directly by a Sansa chapter that opens thusly:

That was such a sweet dream, Sansa thought drowsily. She had been back in Winterfell, running through the godswood with her Lady. Her father had been there, and her brothers, all of them warm and safe. If only dreaming could make it so …

She threw back the coverlets. I must be brave. Her torments would soon be ended, one way or the other. If Lady was here, I would not be afraid. Lady was dead, though; Robb, Bran, Rickon, Arya, her father, her mother, even Septa Mordane. All of them are dead but me. She was alone in the world now.

Her lord husband was not beside her, but she was used to that. (ASOS, Sansa)

If only dreaming could make everyone safe and warm.

So, why would this have happened? Because Jesus-Jon Snow Needs a Virgin Mother Mary Magdalene.

Like many other female characters, Sansa is surrounded by biblical Mary imagery. “Lys”, in fact, is French for “lily”, the virginal flower that represents the Virgin Mary and, as a city name in Essos, the den of high-end prostitutes. Look for “lys”, it’s everywhere. Madonna-Whore is one of the biggest themes in the books, right next to the light and dark messiah represented by Dany and Jon. Sansa is currently still heavy on the “Maiden” aspect, but that was going to change. But with a twist. Mary is, after all, a virgin mother.

A woman who doesn’t remember having been raped is still a virgin, yes?

Starting in Sansa’s “sweet dream” chapter, we get a barrage of pregnancy and bastard allusions all through Sansa’s arrival at the Fingers, along with lots of food symbolism. She has a fluttery “tummy”, she can’t eat. After her Escape, she arrives by ship nauseated and is offered fruit by Littlefinger. She rejects the pomegranate, i.e. marriage to Hades, she rejects the blood orange, i.e. wrathful revenge, but she chooses the pear, i.e. the virgin Mary AND child.

So, Virgin Mary and the bastard child. Or, as the world would call her: the whore.

More hints with Lysa:

As Sansa stepped back, Lady Lysa caught her wrist. “Now tell me,” she said sharply. “Are you with child? The truth now, I will know if you lie.” “No,” she said, startled by the question. “You are a woman flowered, are you not?” “Yes.” Sansa knew the truth of her flowering could not be long hidden in the Eyrie. “Tyrion didn’t … he never …” She could feel the blush creeping up her cheeks. “I am still a maid.” “Was the dwarf incapable?” “No. He was only … he was …” Kind? She could not say that, not here, not to this aunt who hated him so. “He … he had whores, my lady. He told me so.”

So Tyrion “had” a whore. And Sansa has repressed the memory, making her a maiden in her own mind. But a maiden with child.

Littlefinger would have loved it, apparently.

I always anticipated that she would beggar the realm and destroy herself, but I never expected she would do it quite so fast. It is quite vexing. I had hoped to have four or five quiet years to plant some seeds and allow some fruits to ripen, but now … it is a good thing that I thrive on chaos. (AFFC, Alayne)

There are plenty of allusions in all the chapters to rape, protective walls (around people’s hearts) and Jon, in particular, climbing walls, pregnancy, childbirth, Trauma, etc etc etc.

Tyrion’s first chapter after their wedding opens like this:

Nothing remained beyond the King’s Gate but mud and ashes and bits of burned bone, yet already there were people living in the shadow of the city walls, and others selling fish from barrows and barrels. (ASOS, Tyrion)

To make it short: “Wall” is a code for Sansa. There are people living in the shadow of the wall after a gate was destroyed. Hmm.

His marriage was a daily agony. Sansa Stark remained a maiden, and half the castle seemed to know it. When they had saddled up this morning, he’d heard two of the stableboys sniggering behind his back. He could almost imagine that the horses were sniggering as well. He’d risked his skin to avoid the bedding ritual, hoping to preserve the privacy of his bedchamber, but that hope had been dashed quick enough. Either Sansa had been stupid enough to confide in one of her bedmaids, every one of whom was a spy for Cersei, or Varys and his little birds were to blame. (ASOS, Tyrion)

This is the only snag in the theory. Tyrion corroborates Sansa’s version of events. Or so it seems. Maybe Tyrion also misremembers. Which fits with his Tysha repression. There not being a “bloody sheet” is a mystery, though, for another day. There’s a Tyrion scene with Shae in AGOT or ACOK where he, ahem, barely manages to “storm the castle” before he finishes. It may have played like that. If it did. We don’t know.

It doesn’t matter now. But anyway.

Another hint when Catelyn arrives at the Twins for the Red Wedding, describing Lord Walder Frey:

His chair was black oak, its back carved into the semblance of two stout towers joined by an arched bridge, so massive that its embrace turned the old man into a grotesque child. There was something of the vulture about Lord Walder, and rather more of the weasel. His bald head, spotted with age, thrust out from his scrawny shoulders on a long pink neck. Loose skin dangled beneath his receding chin, his eyes were runny and clouded, and his toothless mouth moved constantly, sucking at the empty air as a babe sucks at his mother’s breast. (ASOS, Catelyn)

My suspicion on what would have eventually happened to that bastard:

What does he want me to say? “That is good to know, my lord.” He wanted something from her, but Sansa did not know what it was. He looks like a starving child, but I have no food to give him. Why won’t he leave me be? Tyrion rubbed at his scarred, scabby nose yet again, an ugly habit that drew the eye to his ugly face. “You have never asked me how Robb died, or your lady mother.” “I … would sooner not know. It would give me bad dreams.” “Then I will say no more.” “That … that’s kind of you.” “Oh, yes,” said Tyrion. “I am the very soul of kindness. And I know about bad dreams.” (ASOS, Sansa)

Children starving in the winter is something we heard from Old Nan.

“The Others,” Old Nan agreed. “Thousands and thousands of years ago, a winter fell that was cold and hard and endless beyond all memory of man. There came a night that lasted a generation, and kings shivered and died in their castles even as the swineherds in their hovels. Women smothered their children rather than see them starve, and cried, and felt their tears freeze on their cheeks.” Her voice and her needles fell silent, and she glanced up at Bran with pale, filmy eyes and asked, “So, child. This is the sort of story you like?”

I’m not sure if this would have happened, but there is plenty of precedence of decent young mothers suffering horribly: Helaena Targaryen, Elia Martell, countless unnamed civilians, even Gilly and her two rabbits that Ghost killed.

At this point, of course, it doesn’t matter because it happened differently. Since GRRM had to scrap the 5-year-gap for being unworkable, this plan had to change. Sansa has been in the Vale for way long enough to be certain that pregnancy, at least, is not a factor. This theoretical Lannister baby is a scrap in the bin.

Whether he will pick up this thread directly (by possibly even repeating it when the un-annulled marriage becomes a factor again) or transfer some of this onto Sansa’s storyline by another character, Sansa remains officially a maiden and will most probably become pregnant at some point in a way that recalls the Virgin Mary. It may straight up be Jon’s baby at this point, what with the time constraints. Not remembering is certaintly something that will come up between them. Or it may have either an uncertain or a more sinister “source”.

It’s going to be interesting!

Listen I don’t care that I’ve never done a liveblog about this show before. I love it. I watched the original. I like this one better. Do not watch if you don’t want my buzzed cursing and spoilers and flailing. Like, they could have cooked here. What happened, though, is that we got a recursive string of mystery boxes that don't add anything or really further any of our understanding about the characters.

We know nothing about Jade. She is a walking womb. Actually, sorry, she doesn't even get to walk.
