Good news! Getting down to mechanics, Excal Vanilla is technically better than Umbra. Umbra's passive is a dead slot, while Vanilla's passive affects both his own 4 and a strong class of weapons (not as good as they used to be, but Broken War is still quite solid. Incarnon Prisma Skana is also a very flavorful choice for Excal).

To be honest, the Umbra mods are kinda bait outside of Intensify. They limit build flexibility and few frames really want more than one Umbra mod at once.

Run two augments: Furious Javelin and Chromatic Blade. The first one gives you an enormous buff on melee damage if you can hit a couple guys at once, and the second turns your 4 into a status pressure washer.

This is a bit outdated, but a solid starting point.
