Hello Fello Librarians,  First off, my apologies for the long absence.  I have been working on a SUNY-wide project that was recently approved to be used in future semesters (tell you more about that in a PM if you ask). Now, on to business. There is no doubt that the usage of social media is on the rise in many areas.  In many instances, social media is being used to foster a community online of people who are interested in common things, like for instance, Paint. According to the article, Jeremy Winters uses a facebook page to foster a community full of those who are interested in painting called BoothTalk.  In it’s third month of existence, the community membership increased from 30 to 250-plus enthusiastic artists trying to perfect their craft.

This is not the only group to see success on fostering community on facebook.  There are other groups that are created to help bring people together for a common cause, such as video games, sports fans, and Make-up solutions (Such as fellow LISer Ashley Senske’s Lip Junkie group page that promotes lipstick that actually stays on throughout the day).  Social media just seems to be that place to help bring people together.

What makes this phenomenon even better is the fact that (usually) there is no backlash or arguments within these communities.  It’s just people coming together for a common cause.  Jeffrey Winters puts it in the most explainable way possible when talking about these types of groups (like his) not having any hate talk: “There’s no bashing. Nobody is better than anyone else. We’re just explaining how to get better results...And now with the stream, there’s this live conversation going. People who couldn’t always find answers to problems in their shop suddenly have all these ideas to go off of.”

All of this feeds into Social Media Sensation and creator Mark Zuckerburg’s vision of creating a world that is more social.  When he created Facebook (or FaceMash), he wanted to create a place on the web to bring people together from all over the world via the internet.  According to the article “Facebook and the imperative of sharing” by the Oxford University Press, “In May 2010, Mark Zuckerberg told Time reporter Dan Fletcher that Facebook’s mission was to build a Web where ‘the default is social’ in order to “make the world more open and connected.’”

The arena known as social media is growing more and more into a place where people from all over the world can come to find other people interested in the same thing.  It has made it ok for users to be themselves and, with them being themselves, they will find a community with similar interests (like BoothTalk bringing those who are interested in mastering the art of painting).  With the rising popularity of communities being created on social media sites like Facebook, it is only fitting that the rise of communities is linked to the rise of social media users (if you think about it, the two go hand-in-hand with each other).
