Today i played my first ever game of Commander. I managed to get Hellkite Courser out on turn 5, attacked for 10 damage with The Ur-Dragon, topdecked and played Old Gnawbone, and created 10 treasures at once. I told everyone i was going to be nice and not use them this turn, but then i immediately got hit by Boompile and lost all my treasures and Sol Ring. I got 2nd place at the end of the game tho
lol that is a completely fair reaction to that much advantage being generated at once, regardless of if its on a delayed fuse or not
gg though, did you have a good time? sounds like a banger play, shame it couldnt fully pay off

Death-Defying: Sac Ability Runners-Up ~
Congratulations to our runners-up: @hiygamer, @nine-effing-hells, and @squeezyboi!
@hiygamer — Svogthir, Eternal Parun
Out of all the cards submitted this week, this one feels the most printable—as in, I wouldn’t have been surprised to see this in one of the Ravnican expansions, and not just because of the art choice, heh. This card’s not necessarily ‘safe’ per se, but it’s pretty much exactly what I’d expect from a decent-but-not-format-warping mythic. The return is great, and I like the fact that you have to sacrifice a nontoken creature to return Svogthir to the battlefield. It fuels the ETB as well as the future attacks. Yeah, no, this one’s definitely a draft mythic.
Is that bad? Not at all. Is someone thinking of making a commander deck with it? Sure! This card feels absolutely made to be open and loved without the intent to be impactful outside of that because it’s doing everything expected of it. It’s a nuanced feeling that you’ve captured that doesn’t make me want to pull up the best possible list for it—because that list already exists. This card fits in without demanding change warped around it. Perhaps that’s less eye-catchingly mind-bogglingly brain-meltingly out-of-this-world, but dammit, it’s GOOD.
@nine-effing-hells — Rigged to Explode
Once in a blue moon, cards make me laugh. That makes contests where I ask for something humorous to be a little harder to design for because I’m a fickle creature, but regardless. This card made me laugh! I like the Boompile feeling, and especially the goblinesque (goblinsesque?) component. It makes you force thought into your play, which is probably the hardest part about it, but secretly choosing numbers? Amazingly fun. Write it down, slip it under, and wait for something to happen.
I wonder: did you choose the feeling you wanted to capture first, or did you have a mechanical idea in mind? I can’t imagine that cards like Boompile weren’t inspiration for this sort of thing for a number of reasons. A secret number of reasons! Anyway, choosing new numbers with some sort of loop feels so fun to me, but that’s not what this card wants, and that’s okay. Playing around with a whole bunch of silly feelings at the table means that I’d love to see this in limited, but I know that it’s more Commander-oriented—or actually, Conspiracy-oriented. Can you imagine? I guess my only hard criticism is that, in Commander, it would be partially known that you’d choose a number with mana value equal to someone’s commander, which puts a target on you. Is that still funny? To me, yes.
@squeezyboi — Heltimus, Diabolical Patron
So...wow. Okay! I’d like to point out that I didn’t notice that this guy was seven feet tall until after I chose the winners/runners, so don’t judge me. The looks in hims eyes is reflective of many things, not the least of which is the gilding of his species and the kind of Hell-kin deck you want to run with him. Obviously this card is a) begging for the limited archetype to throw down some amazing cheap ramping things with the species deck, or b) begging to be a commander. Both are good and both work!
I wonder why it’s the creature dying that causes the damage to trigger off of themselves, and not Heltimus pinging himself? If there’s a statement to be made there about art, I wouldn’t know. Do you think it could’ve also pinged off of artifacts as well for a slightly wider net? You might’ve had to tone down the stats a bit in that case, but we’re in tinker-ville and none of that matters much. The point is, tone = wonderful, card = powerful, westernly feeling = oddly reminiscent of people I know IRL? I’ve frequented a couple American west art exhibitions, and honestly, having that mood lovingly parodied/remodeled here is super resonant in a way that feels specific to me. I think I’m experiencing human connection here. Quick, ping me before I get sentimental!
There’s lots of commentary to do, so you know what? I’m gonna do that. Here we go... @abelzumi

What are some fun suggestions you have for an Etali commander deck?
Really go ham on the chaos element. Go for removal like Boompile, Wild Swing, Haphazard Bombardment, and Chaos Warp. I’d also toss in Hamletback Goliath with the amount of casting you’ll be doing, and of course Strionic Resonator. Since you’re in red you could use multiple combat steps too. Make sure you pack lots of big mana like Worn Powerstone and Thran Dynamo, your deck’s gonna be expensive.

EDH Deck Tech: Jhoira Chaos
[you can see every deck tech here]
Hello & welcome to this weekly deck tech! This week it’s time to talk about EDH and we have something a bit different than usual. Let’s just say that it’s a very interesting and crazy deck this week: Jhoira Chaos. Jhoira helps you cast spells that cost a lot for almost free, something that this decks loves a lot; most of the spells have a high CMC and Jhoira makes things much smoother.
While most EDH decks have a straight-forward strategy on how to win, wether it be combos, creature-centric, control etc. this deck relies on something very different, you want to make the game as chaotic as possible. Will you win with this deck? It shouldn’t matter, all you want to do is cause mayhem and screw everything up for everyone. You don't care about the outcome, you just want to spice things up. The deck has a few different ways of doing so and we’ll go over those different ways.
Flip it Up

A good way to add some chaos to the mix is to have things get decided with a 50-50 odd. You’ll want to have quite a few coin flip cards just to make things more interesting. So cards like Chance Encounter, Goblin Bomb, Impulsive Maneuvers, Planar Chaos, Risky Move, Tide of War, Fiery Gambit, Game of Chaos, Mana Clash, Squee’s Revenge, Stitch in Time, Puppet’s Verdict, Goblin Archeologist, Goblin Assassin, Goblin Kaboomist, Karplusan Minotaur, Mogg Assassin, Volatile Rig, Boompile & Krark’s Thumb. Just try to flip a bunch of coins to spice up the game, to do something different than usual.
Messing with the Board

Now that you’re making things exciting with coin flips, it’s time to play with the board state. You want cards that will add some random factor to whatever comes into play or is already in play. Some cards like Confusion in the Ranks, Mana Cache, Pandemonium, Puca’s Mischief, Teferi’s Realm, Cultural Exchange, Goblin Game, Illicit Auction, Indomitable Creativity, Scrambleverse, Thieve’s Auction, Warp World, Whims of the Fates, Chaos Warp, Divergent Transformation, Capricious Efreet, Fatespinner, Perplexing Chimera & Tyrant of Discord. With these you really get to mess up the board state and make things a bit more interesting.
Messing with the Stack

It’s all fun to play with the board but now let’s play with some spells. It’s time to mess with all the control players and make sure everyone is experiencing the chaos! With cards like Curse of Echoes, Eye of the Storm, Grip of Chaos, Hive Mind, Possibility Storm, Psychic Battle, Mages’ Contest, Radiate, Reverberate, Wild Ricochet & Knowledge Pool. With all those cards it’s starting to be a very chaotic game. Also, you’ll want to play Pact of Negation & Pact of the Titan just so you can win the game out of nowhere by forcing players to cap them as well and have to pay for the cost. We’re not done yet though.
Messing with the Libraries

The only thing left to do is play with all the cards that are not in play or on the stack. Start messing with whatever your opponents draw or what they haven’t drew yet. You want to play cards like Mindmoil, Mind’s Dilation, Shared Fate, Sunbird’s Invocation, Wild Evocation, Zur’s Weirding, Humble Defector, Gate to the Aether, Omen Machine, Pyxis of Pandemonium, Teferi’s Puzzle Box & Timesifter. Now we have just enough chaos I think.
Wrap-Up
That’s already it for the deck! It’s quite simple and very chaotic; all you want to do is cause as much mayhem as possible, as fast as possible. That’s why Jhoira is very important, you can just suspend a few expensive chaos spells each turn and keep things interesting for a cheap price CMC-wise. You’ll probably won’t win with this deck, but it’s going to make for some very interesting an unique games; though your opponent’s might not like you for this. In any case, if I missed anything let me know! I’ll see you guys next week for a fishy Standard deck tech!

Boompile
Honorary Uncards
So I was considering it and I think Meandering Towershell definitely fits here. It’s a total oddball I never would have guessed would see print. I think the Pact cycle and meld cards, being black border variants based on previous silver border design, earn spots on this list. Maybe Goblin Test Pilot?
Could you all offer up black border cards that just sort of feel silver border to you?
@blogging-phelddagrif anything in your cube that isn’t draft related or silver border?
I’m probably gonna put these all into my silver border cube at some point.

Check out LRR’s cool Commander 2016 spoiler: Boompile!
This thing hits all the right buttons for me, mostly because it involves flipping coins.
Also, this totally seems like something that Bom would make, right @isharton?
