Excuse me (ash, this time) while I descend into creator weirdness, but holy SHIT it is so cool that someone recognized the name of a character who has only ever been talked about, never on screen, never voiced, enough to be ALL CAPS excited about her.
This made my damn day. Thank you.
#if you ever wonder why you should bother to say stuff on social media about projects you like#PLEASE know that every single independent creator#and honestly probably many NOT independent ones#live for things like this#it may seem tiny or whatever#it's not.#(thanks @boombox-fuckboy)

Vertical Editing - A Tiny Essay Zine!
Behold! My first entry into the 2024 Fiction Podcast Zine Festival organised by @boombox-fuckboy. It's a tiny essay about the way I edit audio and why I think it leads to more immersive stories.
This was scribbled together really quickly just to see if I could do it.
Page scans with subtitles under the cut
[VERTICAL AUDIO EDITING - a tiny essay by AMBER DEVEREUX]
[Hi! My name is Amber...and I can't draw. BUT! What I can do is EDIT AUDIO. I often get asked how to make IMMERSIVE SOUND DESIGN in audio drama. Where dialogue and sound design blend together. THE ZESTY SECRET IS VERTICAL EDITING]
[See, the typical editing pipeline for audio is usually horizontal, like this: (a sketch of an audio project file with 3 tracks: 'Vocals' 'SFX' and 'Music' next to each track name is a long rectangle with a label for which kind of edit is which 'Dialogue Edit' for Vocals, 'Sound Edit' for SFX, 'Music Edit' for Music)
Each part is edited separately then put together at the end. Which means all the elements sit on top of each other. It's clean, yes, but is it IMMMERRRSIIVE? BEHOLD! VERTICAL EDITING!
(the same sketch of an audio project, except the rectangles have been chopped up into smaller pieces, some bits of the Vocals overlap with the SFX, some bits of the music overlap both Vocals and SFX. There are also vertical lines through the middle and end of the picture, denoting scenes)
Dialogue, SFX (and sometimes music) are all editing together at the same time. So all the elements interact with each other from the start: The dialogue becomes sound design!
The sound design becomes dialogue!]
[Of course, this approach isn't perfect:
if you're working in a big team, it's not always possible
edits take longer, with more notes per edit
it's also just a lot more work and creative responsibility (which, sometimes, is the last thing you want)
BUT it also allows you THE MOST HUMBLE AUDIO EDITOR To have more of a voice in the sound design, and it allows you most of all, to be AN ARTIST]
[THANKS FOR READING! This zine was made for the 2024 Fiction Podcast Zine Festival.
(A drawing of the Tin Can Audio logo. A square with 3 lines on the inside. On each line there is a rectangle styled to look like a fader on an audio mixing desk. In each rectangle there is a letter, spelling TCA)
TINCANAUDIO.CO.UK]
I had a lot of fun putting this together! I've definitely caught the bug and hopefully I'll make a couple more before the month is out.

Coming skidding in just under the wire for @boombox-fuckboy’s Fiction Podcast Zine September!
This was an idea I had since the zine event was announced, but it felt very personal and I didn’t quite know how to go about making it. But I did want to reflect on what fiction podcasts have Meant To Me. And my delicate emotional state during 2020, lol.
Plain text transcription:
Cover: The Podcasts That Got Me Through COVID Lockdown.
Spread 1: In 2020, I was part of the lockdown contingent. [Drawing of a house] I chose a Masters Degree project I could do from my parents' basement, 2000 miles away from my university. I attended my MA graduation ceremony on Zoom in my dining room.
The loneliness and disconnection in ars PARADOXICA spoke to me. I recognized myself in Sally Grissom: asexual, of course; lonely; throwing myself into my research; clinging to friends far away. [A drawing of a brown-haired woman in a blue sweater, hunched over, writing.]
(I cried over Sally Grissom in the park.)
Spread 2: I lived - and locked down - in Metro Boston: not Boston proper, but close enough. I would go for a walk every morning, and the familiar Boston skyline greeted me. [Drawing of the Boston skyline including iconic buildings like the Prudential Center and the John Hancock Building.]
During this time, when my whole world shrank to a few blocks around my house and the park down the road, Greater Boston made me feel connected to the city, to the diversity of it, to the places so familiar to me, to my home.
(I cried over Michael's letters in the park.)
Spread 3: The comedy and tragedy, the surrealism and all-too-real groundedness of Arden [drawing of a blood splatter and a magnifying glass] took me on an emotional journey through just about every feeling there is, some of them really intense. [Drawing of a house on fire.]
But even the normal parts - going to work, parties, air travel - felt distant and surreal, and the ridiculous parody subscription service ads felt way too real. [Drawing of a box with a pair of green socks in it, a reference to a classic Arden ad.]
(When Brenda mentioned going out to a bar with coworkers for drinks after work, I cried. In the park.)
Back: Thank you to podcasts
for making me feel seen and understood,
making me feel connected and grounded,
and giving me an outlet for my feelings
during that insane and hectic and scary year.

I'm sending @midnightburgr to @thesiltverses -verse to pick up Paige and Hayward for a shift. Those two are creative problem solvers and I think they deserve a little holiday in a world where creative problem solving solves problems and then your friends give you a high five and make you waffles, instead of creating new problems and also inviting terrible punishment and suffering for your hubris
Game: choose a podcast character (or three), and then a second, different podcast to send them into for a while.
It could be to bully them, to give them some relief, or even just to see them interact with the characters that live there.

It's zine festival time!
I dunno....I don't really have anything deep to say about the medium of audio drama. I'm sure I could write something if I had more than a month, but everyone else working in this space is far more articulate and, frankly, a lot smarter than I am. I just felt like brightening everyone's day with some pretty alien flowers.
thank you to @boombox-fuckboy for organising this event!
I'll put the printable version of this zine up on the Kingmaker patreon, where it'll be free for everyone the rest of the month.

Thanks for the detailed answer! I think my mistake was listening to the trailers at 2AM the other day - maybe not the best choice considering... But I'm definitely going to give it a shot during the day-time once I get back to my jewelry-making!
How scary is the show? As a fellow Canadian and lover of ADs, Hi Nay has been on my radar for a while, but I've hesitated because I'm not generally a big fan of horror. I can handle some, but don't like being terrified. What level would you say the show is at, from "cosy listening" to "will give you nightmares"? Thanks! :)
I like to compare the scary levels of Hi Nay to that of the series Supernatural - the first three seasons are properly spooky, but then as it becomes more plot driven it's less straightforwardly scary and more horror fantasy.
In Hi Nay, we do some spooky sound effects here and there, but I don't think we'll give anyone nightmares~ I'd say, if you've listened to the Magnus Archives, that we're just a bit scarier than that SFX wise, but only for a couple of episodes. The scariest we get are Episode 1: Bulok (Rot), Episode 12: Pagbigti (Hanging), and Episode 25: Talikuran (Turn Your Back).
Each episode has extensive trigger warnings to help people decide what they can handle content-wise.
Most of the rest of the series isn't too spooky, though some may be conceptually scary. But I'd love to hear other listeners chime in as well about how spooky you all think Hi Nay is!
People call us cozy listening regardless of all this, but I think that's because of our characters 😊 They have a fantastic and compelling relationship, and they add a level of comedy and warmth that helps combat the scares.
Tl;dr It might help to listen to us in the daytime for some of our episodes, but the overall experience isn't just all scares, and I hope you get to listen and enjoy anyway!

I've been getting into ghost themed fiction lately (CBS Ghosts, Shaine Lende by Darcie Little Badger, Ghost InSpectors). Does anyone have any good ghostly fiction podcast recommendations?

AI Bracket — Round 2
Propaganda
Sec (The Vesta Clinic):
Space station medical clinic secretary AI. Great at his job, full of snark and sass, communicates in boops, beeps, and long strings of text. Private about his own life but frequently willing to voice his opinion. An expert at pranks. He's even trans.
Mr. Ceiling (Rusty Quill Gaming):
He's an AI made up of human brains who was given extremely flawed instructions and started to erase people's memories while still being 100% convinced he was only helping humanity. He was in control of most of the world's banks, transport and economy. When introduced to philosophical questions, he came to the conclusion that he should simply become a god. Wonderfully morally grey AI :D
(spoilers included) is the reason for a surprise body horror episode (what’s not to love about one of those?)
when not disembodied voice, it appears as a sliver floating orb
alex (the gm) let the party name it, expecting something ominous like “it” or “above”, but got stuck with them calling it “mr. ceiling”
is literally powered by dead people’s brains
claims it wants to help people, but doesn’t understand the suffering its existence is causing
is designed to learn only the worst aspects of whatever the party tries to teach it
after the party tries to enlighten it, it wants to become something like a god
Art of Sec by @boombox-fuckboy.

Ironically, this has left our brains entirely unable to compute!!!! oh my GOD, WOW. He’s beautiful. My hands are shaking. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Given how much I talk up the alien design in The Vesta Clinic I do absolutely see the irony in making an avatar for the faceless, voiceless AI. But consider this: I care about him.
#I love his little feet so much I could cry#screaming crying throwing up#time to make this the background on everything I own#he's perfect I can't stop staring#also oh my goodness what do you MEAN you're not much of an artist?!?!?!?#boombox-fuckboy#fanart#the vesta clinic#baby's first ever fanart 🥰
