‘The Novel Cure’

Books to cure any ailment!

With book clubs being more popular than ever, there are people worldwide recommending, exchanging and discussing books. Part of the joy of reading a book is the opportunity to discuss it afterwards. I am always intensely curious about what people are reading, and why. I was intrigued, therefore, to come across a book called ‘The Novel Cure’ by Ella Berthoud and Susan Elderkin. In 2008 they set up a bibliotherapy service at The School of Life in London, and they have been prescribing books ever since.

Published in 2013, ‘The Novel Cure’ is the A-Z of Literary Remedies, and there are very few ailments with which it does not deal. The novel is comprised of lists of ‘Ten Novels for’ (add relevant ailment, e.g. Ten novels to deal with heartbreak).

It would be impossible to give a rundown of even a quarter of the ailments, or the lists in the book, as there are so many. Instead, I decided to pick out a couple of the lists, and a couple of the more common ailments, and to share my views on both.

The authors do not give their views on the lists, only on the ailments, so we don’t know why they chose these ten books in particular. Having read 5 of the books on the list, I can highly recommend I Capture the Castle by Dodi Smith and Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons (the latter which the authors write about for the ailment ‘a lack of common sense’ as well).  Both books are charming, funny and as comforting as a warm bath. From irony to laugh-out-loud comedy, the list above has it all. Take your pick!    

*My own recommendations for the above list: Making it up as I go along by Marian Keyes and Maeve’s Times by Maeve Binchy. Both of these books had me snorting with laughter. They also have the added benefit of being written as articles for the most part, so you can dip in and out with ease!
