Final Images and Statement:
For this assignment, I knew that I wanted to build off my previous work by using architecture at the forefront of the manipulations. My original plan was to look at feelings of isolation through architecture and landscape, however, after some test manipulations I found that the work was not developing how I wanted it to, and I was not feeling excited about what I was making. This caused a change of plans, where I went back to my previous assignment and found that I liked how certain colours and types of buildings have connotations that when presented together, tell a specific story, or generate certain feelings, therefore, finding myself more drawn to warm lighting, and the emotional nostalgic response I got from it.
I have a deep appreciation for old architecture, and I often find myself imagining what life was like at the time of these buildings’ creation. This inspired me to explore the idea of nostalgia through architecture and landscape. Old photographs often have a sepia tone that people can recognise as being vintage, so I decided to create my own versions of vintage photographs by manipulating my images using a warm sepia/brown colour palette, alongside photographs of old houses and churches.
Within these 3 images, I have explored how specific lighting, combined with landscape and architecture, can generate a nostalgic emotional response. I cut out parts of my own photographs and merged them into 3 separate images that work within a set, exhibiting different perspectives and scenery. While manipulating these images, I thought about Jonas Bendiksen’s The Book of Veles, in which he manipulated fake photographs to trick the photographic community by playing into stereotypes of a drug-ridden European city. This was due to multiple cases of fake news and hacking coming out of Russia, causing him to fear that it would not be long until documentary photography could no longer be based in reality, but instead, fantasy from powerful digital tools. This interested me as I realised in some way, this is what I was doing. I was creating imaginary compositions and trying to make them look as though they were from hundreds of years ago.
These manipulations are intended to be seen in a book but if they were to be seen without context, would viewers believe that they were actually REAL vintage photographs? This made me work hard to try and get my photographs to feel as nostalgic and old, through the sepia tones and subject matter, as possible. To help myself achieve this, I researched other photographers who had taken and edited their photos to be sepia-toned or to showcase warm lighting such as Rick Keller, Daniel X. O’Neil, and Peter Fodor.
The ideas presented in Bendiksen’s Book of Veles were instrumental to my overall direction with my idea of nostalgia. My 3 image manipulations use vintage stereotypes and cliches of sepia tones, combined with photographs of old churches and houses, for the purpose of presenting them in a book as if they were real photographs. This reminded me of the important ethics surrounding photography and manipulation as the lines between what’s real and what’s fake slowly start to blur. I believe this project was beneficial to me through how creating my own manipulations taught me to always consider what is real and what is fake.

Book of Veles
I found this article really interesting as it was focused on a topic I don't know a lot about. I learnt a lot about the methods of manipulation and creating synthetic imagery. The book of Veles is a book created by Jonas Bendiksen on the city of Veles, but with digitally manipulated images that look real enough to come across as actual photos of the city. He used 3d models of people using a video game software, learning from youtube videos. I found this approach really interesting because it requires a lot more time and effort. Opposed to the typical masking of people and editing them into another photo through photoshop, or using AI to generate people into an image. It was interesting to see how the initial interest came from the US 2016 election and the idea of ‘fake news’.
I don't partially dislike this approach to photography but don't feel strongly passionate about it either. It's sort of weird to me, because I would never have thought to manipulate images in this way and I don't necessarily want to after reading about this. It's funny to me that people come up with these ways of manipulation but I find it slightly inspiring considering there is a lot of work going into it, with the rendering of 3d models and then finding clothing and stuff to accessorise the avatar.

The Book of Veles
The Book of Veles is a series of photographs created by Jonas Bendiksen on the city of Veles located in North Macedonia. This series may appear as an assuming photojournalism series about the town; however, these images have been digitally manipulated as the people who inhabit the images were 3D models that had been digitally manipulated into empty locations that Bendiksen had actually taken in Veles. In this photobook, the 5000-word description was also written by a generative AI and the title of the series was taken from an old book with the same title. It is almost inspiring the way in which Jonas Bendiksen was so frustrated by the spread of fake news during the 2016 US election. To feel so strongly about a topic that it fuels this large project/scheme which ends up deceiving many people and make yourself look bad, to make a point/warn others about technologies evolving and “fake news” photojournalism becoming a reality. The method of using 3D models that are provided by a software is an interesting approach to manipulating photographs because I feel like most people would either take photos of real people and then edit them into the photographs or even use something like AI to generate them in. I think this could be a possible way to deal with the ethical issues that are linked with photojournalism about photographing people without their consent. Although Bendiksen talked about how he literally learnt how to render these 3D models into the images by watching YouTube tutorials, I think one would still need to have knowledge of photographic techniques and compositions to make the edits look as seamless as he had done it. I think the use of the grain effect on all the images helped to conceal the fakeness of the 3D models but in a way also made the images feel more real and authentic. Similar to Boris Eldagsen’s AI image that he submitted into a competition, both bodies of work were able to fly under the radar of the judges. Unaware that their work involved a level of fakery. I thought this was super interesting, even if they were two different photography genres, judges who are professionals in their field find it hard to distinguish between real and fake.

WEEK EIGHT READING
BOOK OF VELES
https://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/book_reviews/fake-news-how-jonas-bendiksen-hoodwinked-the-photographic-community-with-the-book-of-veles-160472Links to an external site.
Jonas Bendiksen hoodwinked the photographic community with his 'book of veles'. He visited the city of Veles, North Macedonia which has been named the world capital of fake news. He took photos of the streets and landscapes and returned home to learn video game production softwares. He created characters online and edited them to create realistic features eg weight, acne, dimples. He then rendered the 3D versions into 2D versions and manipulated them into his photographs.
His work was screened at a photography festival and Jonas was shocked to find that no one was questioning the authenticity of his work or recognising the manipulation. So he decided to create a fake profile on social media to leave comments on his work questioning it. Finally a fellow photojournalist pieced it together, and Jonas was found out.
I found this article incredibly interesting and such an interesting concept of photo manipulation and generative AI. This seemed to be a step up from the previous photo manipulation cases we have examined in class, as they are usually photographs which have been taken to cast a completely different light on what they realistically were. However in this case, almost one hundred percent of the content was false, including the prefix to the photographs.
Personally, I see this body of work more as a social experiment. Jonas wanted to be found out for his trickery, having to go a further step into exposing himself via a fake account. I don't see this as unethical as his work was not involving real people, or real situations. It was testing the waters and almost sending a warning for the reality that will become with the everyday improvements of AI. In this case, the work has been created by a very honest and reliable source who always had the plan for his work to be find out as manipulation. However, with this technology getting better and better so quickly, in the wrong hands this could be incredibly damaging. It could change the way things are as we have known them for so long, for instance rewriting history for the generations to come.
To conclude, while I feel like this case of photo manipulation is more a testing of the waters, it is interesting to see just how realistic it can become and how much of an impact this technology is beginning to have on us

“If children grew up according to early indications, we should have nothing but geniuses.”
~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
A MESSAGE from Founder/Executive Director, CYNTHIA BRIAN
Who will be the first in the pool? Within a few days, schools will be out for the summer. As the warmer days of the season approach, our children are focused on fun in the sun. We need those summer splashes but we also need to maintain our educational achievements.
On average, students suffer a learning loss during their vacation. Some students sign up for three or four-week summer programs. However, studies indicate that to yield a measurable academic benefit, instruction needs to be for three hours a day for at least five weeks.
Taking time off to recuperate, rest, repair, and play is equally important for a healthy body, mind, and spirit. Families want to spend time together, take a vacation, travel, or enjoy time at home. Taking a vacation reduces stress, improves moods and sleep, and increases the bond in family relationships by making memories. The bottom line is that taking a time out will boost your happiness.
To reduce learning loss for all ages, choose to read stimulating books. Students can join our Star Teen Book Review Team to write a review that will be published after a book is read. Our talented Book Review Coordinator, Stephanie Cogeos, evaluates each review submitted for accuracy and provides feedback to the writer. It is then published at http://www.btsya.com/book_reviews. To be considered for the team, a volunteer questionnaire must be submitted and approved. The Star Teen Book Review Team is one of the most popular and productive outreach programs BTSYA provides for teens to reduce learning loss at any time. Check out the program.
Our two award-winning radio shows, StarStyle® and Express Yourself! Teen Radio broadcasts weekly all summer with new episodes, so check the lineup and tune in for unapologetically authentic information and edutainment. Live, learn, laugh!
Here at Be the Star You Are!® we are still basking in the limelight of our Moraga win as the 2024 Nonprofit of the Year. We will continue celebrating all year, and we encourage you to mark your calendars for Saturday, September 28 as Be the Star You Are!® continues the party by participating in a parade, ribbon cutting, and the Pear and Wine Festival.
Congratulations to all the graduates from pre-school through grad school! Be a genius and continue to be kind!
May you have a marvelous summer with enchanting festivities filled with family and friends frolicking. Live fully, laugh loudly, love boldly, and learn daily.
Make a Splash! It’s summer!
With gratitude for your support.

SUMMER KINDNESS
by Karen Kitchel
Summer is a time of year when smiles seem to be abundant. It might have something to do with the intoxicating scent of flowers or the virtually cloudless and miraculously bright blue sky. Adding to this sunny state can be a satisfying feeling of knowing you’ve just made someone’s day.
Here are a few simple summer kindness ideas:
Interrupt the ordinary
Think about the people who help you get life done (trash collector, mail delivery person, etc.) Interrupt them on an ordinary day with a bottle of sparkling water or a candy bar and a “Thanks for what you do.”
Ice cream scattering
While at the grocery store, pick up a box of popsicles or ice cream bars and drop them off at a local shelter or food shelf for the volunteers. All you have to say is “Enjoy!”
A line to say to make someone’s day
“You are really good at what you do!”
Kindness cards
Make up a few note cards to keep in your car or purse to randomly give to those wonderful folks who keep restrooms clean, police officers, teachers, or those who make your life a bit better. Cards can say things like: “You are appreciated” or “Thanks for all you do!”
Karen Kitchel is the Kindness Coordinator volunteer with BTSYA. She purchased the book, No Barnyard Bullies, as a gift for every kindergarten student where she is a volunteer teacher. www.scatteringkindness.com
