So poor Boo scared me this weekend. After we got home from Thanksgiving travels on Saturday, he was acting all shaky and I thought he had too many watery poops…. I was scared he had caught a cold or something while traveling. So to the first open appointment with Dr. Kersting’s we went! He got a thorough checkup and clear gramstain. He started acting earlier today, but for my mental health we didn’t cancel. We’re watching him, but think he was feeding on my angsty mood and was stressed from the long car ride. He dived down my coat sleeve when Dr. K’s assistant missed toweling him from the travel cage! He also had a stress seizure while there, which he’s had a few times (and we got thoroughly checked out in 2021). As somebody that grew up before fandom culture fully blew up, I find the cultural gulf between the rest of the world and shipper/fanfic/fandom youths to be startling. It's hard to put the depth of this problem into words. Boobird has a good take there, but I feel like you could write a doctoral thesis on this subject. There's more to it.

Bust this back to the most abstract level. What is a relationship but events in time? Events in time is a plot, a story. If you can appreciate the arc of a "ship" in time, rather than a frozen picture of it, you should be able to understand what it is to enjoy a story.

And if you look at stories where the characters are minimally developed - written in bold simple strokes - like the movie Aliens, the book The Dark Tower - you should be able to understand how we can enjoy characters in a story without needing 47 theories about how their childhood connected to their choices in underwear and ice cream flavors.

I'll give this much to fandom people - you figured out how to enjoy the things you like harder than the rest of us. The emotional energy you put into this stuff makes you look like crack fiends, from my point of view.

That isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's good to enjoy things in life. But I do think you can have a deeply distorted perspective, and are probably cutting yourself off from a world of other forms of entertainment, other ways to appreciate art and especially narrative art.

Don't try to act like this isn't a problem. Some of you are able to handle your hobby OK, take in other things, not get demented. But there are a lot of you who openly confess they're incapable of reading anything but appropriately tagged fanfic - that conventional writing doesn't do anything for them. It's like weed doesn't work for them any more so they had to switch to the hard stuff.

My advice - like with any other obsession, try to know your limits. And if you can't imagine any other way of appreciating stories, know that you're probably already kinda fucked up about this.
