Mika’s head lifted slightly, and I froze. She reached into her bag and pulled out a granola bar, unwrapped it, and took a bite. I waited. Her eyes went back to her book. I counted to ten. Went to slide my book out again, watching her. As I did, her head turned ever so slightly. I pushed it back into the bag. I thought I’d imagined her looking when Mika turned her page and settled backwards in her seat, but then she said, without looking away from the page, “Huh, I didn’t know you could get porn in a train station gift shop.”
