So when his shoulders finally fall and he steps into somewhere safe, his mind doesn't know whether to react with comfort or uncertainty. Wondering when or if a loud voice would boom over him, or a hand would strike. But nothing ever happened.

It's warm here. Away from prying eyes, and cold glances. There's no orders to take, punishments for his behavior.

"Phil," A familiar voice beckons him close, "How long?" John Price asks as Graves' brows furrow in light frustration. How long had it been since the last time he came here? So very far from his men, just to make everything fade away for just a few days. How long since he'd let himself breathe?

"Too long." It's always the correct answer.

"Hot chocolate, tea, or coffee?" There weren't any questions that needed asking. Not with that glossy, exhausted look in Phil's eyes. He needs to be away from whatever shouted in his head, and John could do that.

"First one, capt'n." Graves' chest heaves as he takes a seat in a plush chair.

"It's John right now, love." Said with all the gentleness in the world. God, did he deserve it? Did he deserve the time and the care? Anyone, anyone but him, always.

"That'd feel wrong, y'know.." The commander sighs, rubbing his eyes. He curls around himself, just a bit.

"You're here for a break, Phil, take the break." Price insists. On the other side of the room, he glances at him, not needing to look as he pours milk into a cup for Phil.

"There's too many problems, John, and coverin' my own ass ain't fixing any of 'em."

"I know, but you came for a break, yeah?" Phil nods. "So take a break." A mug of hot chocolate gets pushed into his cold hands. Had his teeth been chattering the whole time?

It's hard to argue the more he finally lets himself sink into the chair, the warmth on his ice cold hands soothing a pain he didn't recognize was there.

"You're alright, love." Take your time.

John sits on the arm of the chair (well, leans on it). A warm, calloused hand brushes through his hair. He can't help but lean into it. It's safe here. No matter how much he repeats it in his head, he still worries whenever he first comes in.

There's someone to catch him when he falls. Right here, there always is. God forbid anything happen.

Graves leans his head against John's shoulder, steadily sipping his hot chocolate until it's empty. What had been jagged, shallow breaths, became steady, calm inhales and exhales. The sugar in the hot chocolate should've been able to keep him awake for just a little while, but damnit, he can't help but close his eyes.

He doesn't really hear the gentle words Price says to him as he drifts off, but he feels a jacket around his shoulders, and the warmth of a blanket on his lap. He'll take a break, just for a little while.
