I think a large part of why i'm so enamoured with and empathetic towards inanimate objects ESPECIALLY robots stems from one very specific experience as a kid.
So i have a science museum in a town a little ways away from where i live, it's not very big but it's an interesting one- way more hands on and active than other museums i'd been to as a child. They have a 'build a bridge and earthquake test it' table, they have a 'we put footage of the Takoma narrows bridge on a tv you can rewind and fast forward and speed up or slow down' table. For some reason. Thats not important for this story, um, ok. Ok so they also have this one big exhibit. This giant plexiglass enclosure housing two robot arms used for building cars, one a riveter and one a painter arm.
When you approach them they wave at you, they dance, and then they'll demonstrate their job; simulating the delicate, precise motions they make to make a car, gliding effortlessly through a routine they've done a million times over. And then they dance again, and wave at you, pointing their robot heads like real heads, like animals, like they're looking at you. I, as a kid, was lonely- i can admit that- so it's hardly surprising that something in my tiny tiny brain latched onto the fact these huge machines had just danced for me and waved at me like they were happy to see me. Something clicked in me and pretty soon i was asking to go back to this museum constantly to go see them, these machines made for manual labour were real creatures to me, animals who were so happy and friendly that i wanted to hang out with them and play with them- i wanted IN that plexiglass, but of course toddlers cannot go into cages with heavy machinery because unbeknownst to a small child that will result in them getting mulched. But i came back time and time again over years and years and years, always predominantly to see these mechanical arms, fascinated with them in the same way i was fascinated with dinosaurs and dragons, wanting to be their friend so so bad.
And then one day they weren't there!
Their exhibit had been replaced, vanished, instead there was a big x ray exhibit that let you see inside the mechanisms of various things instead. And as an adult this is no big deal, exhibits rotate, things break and new knowledge is given through newer things. But as a kid this was harrowing. This was like i was a kid in a movie and my fantastical unicorn i'd bonded with had just been sent to the glue factory, i was Distraught. They killed my robot friends!!! As you can imagine this was hell for every adult around me to handle, because what the fuck do you do to reassure this kid, this isn't a situation they prepare you for- they don't write 'what to do when your kid gets obsessively attached to a piece of machinery' in child care books! So anyway i spent the rest of that day glaring in deep rage and upset at x rays of machines, feeling like i was looking at the splayed guts of my fallen comrades, and then vowing to never go back there again.
A vow that i broke because listen. That Takoma narrows table called my name when i was ten i won't even lie to you. AND they had a full miniature diorama of a town you could flood? Museums are good folks.

Hello!!! I am so curious if you have any spare Trillium and Ivy lore that you’d like to share? Any backstories, character playlists, cut scenes, whatever you’d like! It’s definitely become one of my comfort fics, and it’s so well written and funny! Have a great day! 🤞🏻
Hell yeah! I just opened my original note/outline document to look through it, so here's some concepts that never made it into the final version (but could still be true!):
-[re:meryl and milly] one of the couple is trans. everyone assumes it is 6-foot deadlift-a-tree Milly, but it is of course 5'4" blow-away-in-a-stiff-wind Meryl
-Hoppered, or Hop, liaises with the May homeless population and still spends a huge amount of time on the streets, but has been a staple at the shelter for so long that the people who run the place started insisting on paying him to help them with outreach. He is usually around somewhere in his wheelchair with his backpack of supplies for specific recipients - like he takes people their prescriptions, makes sure the people with allergies get special groceries, knows exactly where to put up notices about shower and bed and job opportunities. One of the people at the shelter is the blind woman from the manga
-actual part of my notes: "livio's just like didja bang yet. didja bang yet. hey hey, nick. you fuckin. hey. and nick is like I Will Push You Out Of This Moving Car I Swear To God. but privately also thinking like, i can never admit how much ive been jerking it recently, could vash STOP carrying heavy bags of mulch around the parking lot all day, please vash i am going to die"
-Another long chunk of the notes, detailing the Saverem family dynamic: "vash explains he grew up on a farm with some ex-commune hippie parents who adopted he and knives and tried to get away from a lot of the groupthink of the commune while still imparting their ideals onto the twins. which meant homeschooling and a lot of camping, backpacking, learning to live off the land kinda stuff. alex died when the twins were really young but rem was a good single mom. but the twins always were competitive and when knives caused the accident it tore the family apart. vash was in the hospital for a really long time and ended up never going to college because of it, and knives started college but dropped out to join the group he ran with for several years. rem couldn't quite empty-nest because vash had to be home a lot for recovery and went through a long period of depression during which he slowly went back and got his GED, learned to cope with prosthetics and chronic pain, relearned loving the land, and turned from big farming projects to smaller garden projects. then rem was diagnosed with ovarian cancer which is cruel because she and alex never could conceive - why they adopted - and rem and vash had a really strong period of bonding while he healed and she died, during which she apologized for accidentally teaching the twins that productivity and purpose was everything, because really purpose isn't everything. just existing is a good in the world. existing and being kind to yourself and others. and plants that didn't "do" anything were just as precious as ones that made food or other "useful" stuff. Vash grows flowers for rem. she loved red flowers, especially geraniums. rem dies."
AGAIN I JUST WANT TO SAY, I was fuckign writing this before Stampede even got announced, so that damn apollo dodgeball of prophecy got me even with the idea of "plants that don't do anything."
-the original outline for the final showdown with Legato involved Livio, Zazie, Meryl & Milly ALL also going to the warehouse (later turned into the abandoned nightclub). It was batshit and I realized how untenable it was pretty early, and dumped everyone from the scene except the vital players (V, W, K, Legato). I also had this incredibly complicated way to justify why Legato getting arrested wouldn't just immediately get Knives also arrested? and then I realized that, duh, by far the easiest way to sidestep the issue was to just kill Legato. He dies in every canon anyway. Like why was I trying to keep him alive, lol.
-midvalley was going to be an FBI guy? ok sure
OTHER LITTLE SCENES I meant to write for the follow-up of mini-fics:
-Nick is from somewhere cold, and underestimates heat. He speaks at a burial in the summer (full suit, no tent) and ends up having heat exhaustion. doesn't know why he's so sick until Vash gets the details of his day out of him and Vash is like, good god man, here is water, go lie down, did you not grow up with constant PSAs about how not to get heat stroke? and nick's like NO you dipshit!
-Vash is from somewhere hot, and underestimates cold! An ice storm that is unreasonably strong for the area (thanks climate change!) passes through and Vash is just excited for snow like a kid at Christmas. meanwhile Nick is going feral trying to winterize a house that was never built for/intended to be winterized. Vash's joy at the snow helps remind him to see the beauty of it for a while, and that's nice, but then their power stays out for like a week and it becomes "huddle for warmth in a snowed in cabin" trope except more depressingly realistic bc it's your own damn home and you can barely live in it. :C (drawn from personal experience, ahaha... ugh)
-at some point I had meant to write them going on a trip to the beach with the girls, and/or a trip to December so Vash could meet Melanie and Nick could visit St. Michaels
anyway that's all I can think of for now! thank you so much for being a fan of my silly story! <3 <3 <3 I loved writing it and I love how much love it's gotten over time since I posted it.

ARTEMIS FOUL????? I NEVER WATCHED IT BUT I DO REMEMBER THAT THEY MARKETED THE SHIT OUT OF THAT MOVIE AT MY LOCAL THEATRE AND I HAD NO IDEA WHY BECAUSE ALL I HEARD ABOUT IT WERE BAD THINGS 💀 ALSO I AM VERY POLITELY ASKING FOR THE FOUR PARAGRAPH LAMENT AND ANALYSIS, I THINK IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO HEAR FROM SOMEONE WHO KNOWS THE BOOKS WELL
OKAY CRACKS KNUCKLES LETS GO-
anon. i am so happy you never experienced this. it was so bad. it was so fucking bad. to quote the wikipedia page "The film received negative reviews from critics, who criticized the film's plot, dialogue, characters, visual effects, and changes made to the source material." which is fucking hysterical because as you can see, that is in fact..... all of it. the whole movie. that is all of the things about the movie! and boy was this prescient of the experience i was about to have.
so, without further ado, here is my rant as an Artemis Fowl Lover Of Many Many Years on what was insanely, profoundly, hideously wrong with that movie. under a cut for the wellbeing of my dash bc this is uhhhhh a LOT more than four paragraphs i'm so sorry. i still have so much more i could say but. i'll leave it at this. which is already a lot.
THE OPENING & PLOT
literally right from the very opening it was just..... bad. it was very bad. it started with this news blitz of like, clips of reporters talking about some mysterious big drama, and it was the. weirdest possible tone. to start this story from? it was weird and bad. every character's introduction was weird and bad. butler's actor was wearing fucking irradiated blue contact lenses for some fucking reason. artemis was surfing. what is going on here.
so here are some wild choices they made: artemis's mom? dead. artemis's dad? PRESENT AND ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN HIS LIFE. he is a leather jacket wearing, affectionate, involved Cool Dad who just has to go on a lot of work trips. friends, those of you who read these books will remember that the situation is that artemis's father has been gone for like Two Years, and artemis's mother is......... basically comatose in her room. she is very much not doing any parenting. this is the specific collection of factors that lets the whole plot happen, because it leaves artemis without any supervision or parenting, and also just enough like. cover for the plot to allow this to keep happening, because artemis iirc goes to great lengths to cover up his mom's like. catatonia.
i didn't watch most of the movie. i watched less than nineteen minutes of it. so i can't say much about the plot, but this setup of like........... COOL STUNTS and mulch diggums being interviewed by the human-ass police and artemis's dad teaching him about the faeries because they're Bonding (???????) and there's a basement of faerie artifacts in fowl manor it just. i don't. why would you do this.
ARTEMIS HIMSELF
oh my gd. they massacred my boy- like. okay. listen. i was listening to a wonderful podcast - it's called the shrieking shack, i highly recommend it, and it's a podcast by and for, quote "lapsed h/arry pott/er fans" and the hosts are great, it's well edited, it's a wonderful, hilarious read. in one episode i was just listening to, artemis fowl came up! the host liz was saying that she was just generally fed up with and burnt out on the 'boy genius' genre as a whole, which is fair. i respect that and i vibe with it. however, she didn't recall anything from the actual books themselves, which became clear, because her cohost, xeecee, sort of cut in to correct that like. actually, these books were a pretty effective and highly specific deconstruction of the Cool Boy Genius Genre.
artemis is smart as all hell, that's true. he's incredibly smart. however, he's also a smug, irritating, irresponsible little shit who makes bad choices, and the narrative and other characters are not easy on him for this. he's not supposed to. he's not cool, or smooth, or admirable, or whatever. he's just... a shitty baby with no supervision, entirely too much money, yes too smart for his own good, but making bad decisions and seeing consequences for those decisions and having to grapple with like. the way those bad decisions have consequences for other people too. and the movie....... un-subverted that. they ruined it entirely, because actually yes, in that film we are directly supposed to think artemis is Really Cool! we're introduced to him SURFING for fuck's sake. artemis fowl. introduced to us SURFING.
and then there's like......... the introduction, the first couple of MINUTES of this movie. like within the first three or so minutes. they torpedoed any chance i would have at taking this seriously as an adaptation of artemis fowl.
and so what really struck me very quickly as Extremely Wrong is that - and this is something that as an adult particularly reflecting on this makes me profoundly fucking sad - but he's too..... happy. in the first several minutes. he's happy. he's having fun. he's relaxed, he's a kid. that's not........ he's not like that in the books. he's not happy. he's not running around grinning because golly gee gosh does he love being in the outdoors in ireland!!!!! he's severe, and intense, and focused and we see him smug, and self-satisfied, and proud, and like. excited in an intellectual, aha what a clue kind of way, but he is not happy. and he specifically isn't relaxed and like- bouncy-happy the way he is in the first several minutes here. this movie so thoroughly misses the mark that it misses one of the most acute pieces of like. pathos? in these books? which is that artemis himself is a really fucking tragic character. like yeah, he's a shitty baby and he sucks, but that's 1. the point, and 2. he is a Child who didn't have a chance in hell of actually being one.
i think we get to see him like. shed that a bit, later on, and actually have some moments where he is happy. but it's so like........... it takes a longass time and it's extremely hard-won, from a reader's perspective. when we see him crack and act like a kid, it's huge. it's extremely emotionally affecting. so to have his introduction not only involve SURFING but artemis grinning and bouncing around and doing sick skateboard trips..... no. that's not...... no. at this point the protagonist is unrecognizable, and why are you doing an adaptation. just make a different movie.
BUTLER
in his introductory sequence, the narrative says he is never to be called The Butler, even though his last name IS butler, and "you could call him 'dom' or 'domovoi'" which...... lmfao. fuck off. you could resoundingly NOT call him that, that was in fact a major plot point. twice. this really, really fucking bothered me, because like..... that is specifically a character thing that i really really liked from the books, the whole thing about butler's first name. and the thing they did with artemis's parents, with his mom being dead and his dad just sort of Being Here As An Active Presence like. completely undermined the whole...... thing, with artemis and butler. butler was his father figure, but neither of them could really..... they were both kept at arm's length from this for a very long time, because butler was employed by the fowl family and artemis is like. so fucking emotionally repressed that he is practically made of stone. like...
one of the reasons that butler was a character i was always pretty fascinated by as an adult who like, pretty seriously failed artemis but also couldn't really have done any better because of the specific combination of factors that landed both of them where they were in life. and the emotional core of their relationship was something i was obsessed with as a kid who was just getting super into Found Family As A Trope. and the whole thing where like....... one of THE major cracks we see in artemis's persona, the biggest CONSEQUENCES that he sees is when he makes a mistake, he gets outplayed, and butler is fatally shot. he's devastated, he's terrified, and it's his fault. someone he loved - whether or not he could contextualize it like that - was going to die and it was his fault. and that scene of him dealing with this, and making this plan to save him and needing to move butler to the restaurant freezer and being too small to move him effectively was like.... man that hit so hard. and none of that hits without this deliberate distance that's represented by the fact that not only does artemis not refer to butler by his first name, he does not fucking know what it is.
and then in this movie the first line that artemis says to butler addresses him directly as "dom" and i- no. i think i actually said "fuck off" out loud. because come on.
THE UH. CASTING CHOICES. THEY MADE. HOO BOY.
so i didn't get to meet either of them in the movie and this was for the best, but boy did they ever make some casting choices with root and holly.
i love dame judi dench, i love the THOUGHT of her playing root, but like.......... of all the characters you could genderbend, literally pick any of them but that one. any of them. at all. personally? i think it'd be fucking great to make mulch a woman, or trouble kelp. i personally, for my own enjoyment, would fucking LOVE to see a Cool Butch Lady Trouble Kelp. bruh. PLEASE. but........ root?????? genderbending that character specifically undermines the entire Deal with him and holly. because the fact that root was a kinda shitty older man who had to pull his head out of his ass was THE POINT. but uh. not like they got into that i guess, given what i heard they did with holly. who, speaking of-
and casting a kid to play holly? no. no. fuck off. she is a grown-ass adult woman. i'm not even gonna get into this. it's so bad. why the fuck would you do that. that's probably what actually got me to bail because i thought i'd like, hallucinated that or something but my buddy confirmed that no, she was played by A CHILD. good lord. no.

Heck, I often like to start with the stupid bullshit lore, as it makes the rest of it much weirder and more interesting.
Like, let's start with, "We're using the potion miscibility table because most common potion solvents are sentient and like to get into fights." Full stop, table gets into an argument, but why though?
Let's dig back. Common potion solvents: Oil, alcohol, water. All right, water being sentient is a fun one, we can kind of tie that into the God of Water being both an abstract entity as well as physically manifested through all extant forms of water, but the previous statement means this is also true of oil and alcohol. Having a God of Alcohol: so far, so Dionysian, but a God of Oil? That's kinda fun. I want to worship the Oil God. This is also leaning our world towards being pretty strongly animist, with every thing that is a thing having an abstract embodiment of divinity, which makes complex things - like people - a bit more involved to envision.
So let's dig back further. The water in your body, the fat of you, the iron in your blood, all of it is alive and at least part of something that has opinions, which means that you aren't just some dude - you're a living agreement, a legal document that walks around and eats apples because the Sugar God is cool with it. Everything lively and complex exists because of the gods, which are many, and didn't so much make them as engineer them, argue them into being. Which means that magic, an alteration of literal Natural Law, is pretty danged similar to non-magical legal practice. Wizards are attorneys, people who study the agreements and find ways to interpret them to their benefits. Sorcerers are a privileged class, someone the law doesn't apply to the same as it does others. Warlocks have attached themselves to a legal entity that either manifests that privilege, exists outside it, or can manipulate the law to their own ends (which means that your warlock patron can be a cosmic class action lawsuit that has been going on for millennia).
Let's put this to the practical level. If every thing is a god, you can get a bit of that folksy hedge worship involved - seasonal festivals to the Makers of Meat (which are a conclave of otherwise small Acid Gods whose joined voice is greater than theirs individually), mulch and water offerings to the Sugar God, pennies paid to worship at the Salt God's sea-cave shrines. But on a national level, this means that legal entities - like said nations - are also cosmic entities. The king of the Silverkynd Meadows has to be a sorcerer, it's part of the code - even during that whole violent deposition thing, the resulting warlord wound up a sorcerer by legal right. To own that mine, the Gold God has to be cool with you specifically. The contracts that those contract-making devils use are so perfidious and awful because they are legal within the framework of reality but made with something outside that reality - Evil is not an thing with a divinity, but those devils absolutely are made of Evil. And angels, conversely, are elemental, real in a way few other things could ever be.
This also means that the counter to magic is lawlessness. Anarchy counters agreements, breaks down the bonds between things. Even completely chaotic beings must recognize some sort of authority - a warlord, a pack leader, the rule of fang and talon - because to do otherwise sets them apart from the world. And people do recognize that. Ethical, stateless anarchy is practiced, but it's terrifying to extant powers because it negates them - all magic is as possible as it is counteractable. You can argue your own void, wherein you will never eat, nor age, nor bleed. Some monasteries do this, which puts them on a societal ill level the same as those really bad necromancers that make windmills out of peoples' arm bones and stuff.
So. Our group's got a cleric (Trickery domain, worshiping Alcohol, of course), a rogue (Mastermind, stole so much they're effectively geased to the Gods of Silver, Gold, and Sapphire, and boy are they working on Diamond), and a barbarian (Wild Magic, the agreement that caused them to exist devolved into a wild drunken argument and they came out kind of half-baked). They're currently halfway into exploring the Forest of Not, where the trees float and the rain spins itself into being from speckled stars hanging in air, tracking down a coded message that is in the process of being tortured to reveal its own cipher. Who're you going to be?
We're still using the potion miscibility table.
So, the way I see it, there are 5 types of lore in your game.
There's what you might call basic lore, which is just normal information players need to know about the world - elves exist, we're on a terraformed Mars, people get powers thanks to aliens. This tends to not be that interesting, it's just basic stuff. No-one hugely cares about them.
Then there's pragmatic lore, which is lore that's mostly there to determine what people can or can't do. "The lich's phylactery is the kings crown" or "the state has spies everywhere". This is also usually fairly boring. Related is narrative lore, which is things like "we have high tensions with the klingon empire" or "the vampires are massing under one ruler" - lore that is intended to set up a plot. This is only interesting dependent on the plot its setting up happens, otherwise its just pointless.
Then there's awesome lore, which is thing like "this land was founded by eternal dragons!" or "magic is drawn from Lucifer's chains!". Lore for the sake of lore, big setpeices and cool reveals and such like. And they can be interesting, but they can also be really annoying if the players don't find them as cool as the GM does.
Which is why I advocate the fifth kind.
Shitty bullshit lore.
Shitty bullshit lore is things like "Elven woman love children's toys. They're Lego Lasses" or "Oh, gold pieces detonate if you have more then ten in your pocket at once, did no-one mention that?". It's lore whose function is designed to grind the story to a halt while your players beat you to death with hammers. It's lore as an active weapon to use against the rest of your game group.
You should put as much as it in your game as possible.

Understanding Landscape Fabric: A Comprehensive Guide
Landscape fabric, also known as weed barrier fabric, is a widely-used material in gardening and landscaping. It serves as a protective layer between the soil and the elements, offering various benefits for gardeners, landscapers, and homeowners. This guide will explore what landscape fabric is, its benefits, types, installation process, and best practices to maximize its effectiveness.
Tumblr media
What is Landscape Fabric?
Landscape fabric is a permeable material typically made from woven or non-woven polypropylene or polyester. It is designed to allow water and nutrients to pass through while blocking sunlight, preventing weed growth, and stabilizing soil. The fabric is commonly used in garden beds, around trees, and beneath pathways or patios.
Benefits of Using Landscape Fabric
Weed Control: The primary function of landscape fabric is to prevent weeds from sprouting. By blocking sunlight, it inhibits the germination of weed seeds, reducing the need for manual weeding or herbicides.
Soil Moisture Retention: Landscape fabric helps maintain soil moisture by reducing evaporation. This is particularly beneficial in dry climates or during hot summer months, as it can reduce the frequency of watering.
Soil Erosion Prevention: By stabilizing the soil, landscape fabric prevents erosion, especially on slopes or in areas prone to heavy rainfall. It keeps the soil intact and prevents it from washing away.
Enhanced Plant Growth: By preventing weed competition and retaining moisture, landscape fabric can contribute to healthier plant growth. Plants receive the nutrients and water they need without competition from weeds.
Long-Term Durability: High-quality landscape fabric can last for several years, providing a long-term solution for weed control and soil stabilization. It is resistant to degradation from UV rays and harsh weather conditions.
Types of Landscape Fabric
Woven Fabric: Made from woven polypropylene or polyester fibers, this type is durable and allows for good water and air permeability. It is ideal for areas with high traffic or where heavy materials like gravel or mulch will be used.
Non-Woven Fabric: Non-woven fabric is typically thicker and made from bonded fibers. It offers excellent weed control but may be less permeable than woven fabric, making it better suited for areas with low traffic or where erosion control is a priority.
Spun-Bond Fabric: This type is a combination of woven and non-woven fabrics. It offers a balance of durability and permeability, making it versatile for various landscaping needs.
How to Install Landscape Fabric
Prepare the Area: Clear the area of any existing weeds, rocks, or debris. Level the soil and add any necessary amendments, such as compost or fertilizer, before laying the fabric.
Cut the Fabric: Measure the area and cut the landscape fabric to fit. Allow extra fabric to overlap at the edges, ensuring complete coverage.
Lay the Fabric: Position the fabric over the soil, ensuring it lies flat without wrinkles. Overlap any seams by at least 6 inches to prevent weeds from growing through.
Secure the Fabric: Use landscape fabric pins or staples to secure the fabric in place. Space the pins every 1 to 2 feet along the edges and seams.
Cover with Mulch: Apply a layer of mulch, gravel, or other ground cover over the fabric. This adds weight to keep the fabric in place and enhances the aesthetic appeal of the landscape.
Maintain the Area: Regularly check for any weeds that may emerge through the seams or edges and remove them promptly. Reapply mulch as needed to maintain coverage.
Best Practices for Using Landscape Fabric
Choose the Right Fabric: Select a fabric type that matches your specific landscaping needs. Consider the area's traffic, moisture levels, and erosion potential when choosing between woven, non-woven, or spun-bond fabrics.
Proper Installation: Ensure the fabric is laid flat and secured tightly to prevent weeds from finding gaps. Overlap seams adequately and avoid stretching the fabric too tightly.
Use Mulch Wisely: Covering the fabric with mulch not only improves the appearance but also helps retain moisture and protects the fabric from UV damage. Organic mulches, like wood chips, can also break down over time, enriching the soil.
Monitor and Maintain: Even with landscape fabric, some weeds may still find a way through. Regular monitoring and maintenance are essential to keep the area weed-free and the fabric in good condition.
Conclusion
Landscape fabric is a valuable tool for gardeners and landscapers looking to control weeds, retain soil moisture, and prevent erosion. By choosing the right type of fabric and following proper installation techniques, you can create a low-maintenance, aesthetically pleasing landscape that will thrive for years to come. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a landscaping novice, understanding and using landscape fabric effectively can make a significant difference in the health and appearance of your outdoor spaces.

Planting a Mother's Day Flower Garden for Lasting Joy
Introduction
Mother’s Day is a special occasion to celebrate the incredible women in our lives who nurture, love, and inspire us. While gifts like cards, chocolates, or jewelry are often appreciated, there’s something profoundly meaningful about giving a gift that grows and flourishes over time. One such gift is a beautiful flower garden, a living tribute that brings joy not just on Mother’s Day, but throughout the year. Planting a Mother's Day flower garden is an act of love that provides lasting joy, both for the giver and the recipient.
The Symbolism of Flowers
Flowers have held symbolic meaning throughout human history, representing love, beauty, and gratitude. Gifting flowers to mothers on Mother’s Day is a tradition that stems from this symbolism. Each flower has its own significance, allowing you to convey specific emotions. For example, roses symbolize love and gratitude, while lilies represent purity and devotion. By carefully selecting flowers for your Mother's Day garden, you can create a personalized bouquet that speaks volumes without saying a word.
Choosing the Right Flowers
When planning a Mother's Day flower garden, consider your mother’s preferences, favorite colors, and the climate of her garden. Opt for a variety of flowers that bloom at different times of the year, ensuring there’s always something in bloom. Spring-blooming bulbs like tulips and daffodils bring early color, while summer perennials like roses and peonies provide long-lasting beauty. Include some fragrant flowers like lavender or jasmine to add a sensory dimension to the garden.
Planning and Preparation
Before diving into planting, it’s essential to plan your Mother's Day garden carefully. Consider factors such as sunlight, soil type, and space. Most flowers require at least six hours of sunlight per day, so choose a spot in your mother’s garden that receives adequate sunlight. Test the soil pH and fertility levels, amending it as necessary with compost or fertilizer to create an optimal growing environment.
Planting the Garden
Once you’ve chosen your flowers and prepared the soil, it’s time to start planting. Begin by laying out your garden design, considering factors like height, color, and bloom time. Plant taller flowers towards the back and shorter ones towards the front to create depth and visual interest. Be sure to follow the planting instructions for each type of flower, paying attention to spacing and depth.
Caring for the Garden
A Mother's Day flower garden requires regular care to thrive. Water your garden deeply once or twice a week, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulch around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming, and fertilize the garden with a balanced fertilizer once a month during the growing season.
Creating Lasting Memories
Beyond the act of planting, a Mother's Day flower garden creates lasting memories for both giver and recipient. Spend time together in the garden, sharing stories, laughter, and love. Take photographs throughout the year to document the garden’s growth and transformation. As the flowers bloom and fade with the seasons, the garden becomes a living testament to the enduring bond between mother and child.
A Sanctuary for Reflection
A Mother's Day flower garden also provides a sanctuary for reflection and relaxation. Encourage your mother to spend time in the garden, enjoying the sights, sounds, and scents of nature. Whether she’s sipping her morning coffee among the blooms or unwinding with a book in the evening, the garden offers a peaceful retreat from the busyness of everyday life.
Passing Down the Tradition
As your Mother's Day flower garden flourishes, consider passing down the tradition to future generations. Teach your children the joy of gardening and the importance of honoring the women in their lives. Let them help choose flowers, dig in the dirt, and care for the garden alongside you. In doing so, you instill in them a sense of love, appreciation, and stewardship for the natural world.
Conclusion
Planting a Mother's Day flower garden is a meaningful way to celebrate the special women in our lives. By choosing the right flowers, planning carefully, and nurturing the garden with love and care, you create a lasting tribute that brings joy and beauty year after year. Beyond the blooms, the garden becomes a symbol of love, gratitude, and the enduring bond between mother and child. So this Mother's Day, give the gift of a flower garden, and watch as it grows and blossoms, just like the love between you and your mother.

What to Use to Repair Rotted Wood?
Have you ever thought what to use to repair rotted wood? Or that section of rotting wood fencing that now looks more like a sad pile of mulch than a barrier? Maintaining and repairing rotted wood can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be!
Tumblr media
With the right tools, products and techniques, you can breathe new life into aged or damaged wood structures. In this post, I'll break down the various options for treating rotted wood and help you determine which method is best suited for your specific project and wood repair needs.

Rotted wood is a common problem that many homeowners face. It can be caused by moisture, insects, or simply age. No matter the cause, it is important to address rotted wood as soon as possible to prevent further damage and potential safety hazards.
So, what should you use to repair rotted wood? There are a few options available depending on the extent of the damage and personal preferences. Let's take a look at some popular choices.
1 . Wood Fillers
Wood fillers, also known as wood epoxies or putty, are one of the most common solutions for repairing rotted wood. They come in two parts that need to be mixed together before application. Once applied, they harden into a durable material that can be sanded, painted, and even stained to match the color of the surrounding wood. Wood fillers are a great option for small to medium-sized areas of rotted wood.
2 . Epoxy Resin
Epoxy resin is another type of two-part adhesive that can be used for repairing damaged wood. It has a stronger bond than wood filler and is often used for larger areas of rot. However, it can be more challenging to work with as it sets quickly and requires precise measurements when mixing.
3 . Wood Hardener
Wood hardeners are liquid solutions that penetrate deep into the rotted wood fibers, strengthening them and preventing further decay. This is a good option for smaller areas of rot that are still structurally sound, as it can help reinforce and stabilize the wood before using a filler or epoxy.
4 . Wood Replacement
In some cases, the rotted wood may be too damaged to repair. In these situations, it is best to replace the affected area with new wood. This may require cutting out the damaged section and fitting in a replacement piece, which can be a more time-consuming and labor-intensive solution.
5 . Prevention
While it is important to know what to use to repair rotted wood, prevention is always the best course of action. Regularly inspecting and maintaining your home's exterior can help identify and address any potential issues before they turn into major problems. Keeping wood surfaces properly sealed and protected can also help prevent rot from occurring in the first place.
Conclusion
Now you know what to use to repair rotted wood. In conclusion, there are various options available for repairing rotted wood, each with its own benefits and considerations. It is important to assess the extent of the damage and determine the best course of action for your specific situation. And remember, regular maintenance and prevention can go a long way in avoiding the need for repairs in the future.  So, make sure to regularly inspect and take care of your home's exterior to keep it in top condition. Your wallet and peace of mind will thank you!
