Bondathon contd: Spectre
I’m going to admit I have been unnecessarily harsh on Spectre in the past, this rewatch may have put that right.
It’s actually up there very close to Skyfall, Daniel Craig is slightly less humourless than before and it rips along at a good lick throughout, if there are any weaknesses it’s probably Lea Seydoux who doesn’t quite seem to be the right choice for Madeleine Swann (which is a nice little Proustian touch in itself) although she’s less irksome that Christoph Walz who does that annoying smirk thing he always seems to bring to a role, which frankly says less sinister and more annoying cunt with a complex, in this case daddy issues and sibling rivalry. (Which probably puts me in contention to be a Bond villain, I already have the facial scars.)
Those things though are less the reason why I’ve never rated this as highly as Skyfall, the reason for that is simple, the theme song is crap. And that’s a shame because there is a lot to like about this film, including a tremendous opening sequence with a great Goodfellasesque single tracking shot through Mexico City during the Day of the Dead festivities, and Ralph Twistleton Fiennes taking over as M. It’s worth another view for those things alone, just can we have a version that has Radiohead’s dirge instead of Sam Smith?

Tomorrow: Die Another Day…
Only kidding I don’t think I could ever bear to watch that again, I shall of course be revisiting No Time To Die, a film I had mixed feelings about when I finally got to see it after the pandemic.

228 | The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
Michael, Rob, and Karen continue their Bondathon with a game-changing entry in the series, The Spy Who Loved Me. Co-starring Barbara Bach and featuring Caroline Munro, it introduces new recurring characters like Jaws and General Gogol while also raising the bar for sheer spectacle. But is it also good?!

No Time To Die (2021) Review
No Time To Die (2021) Review
James Bond had left active service and somewhat retired, but was that ever really going to fully happen? He certainly hoped so, but when Felix Leiter his old friend from the CIA turns up asking for his help it isn’t long before he is dragged back into everything to figure out the dangerous villain who has developed some fatal new technology. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (more…)

In 2019, we would like to give thanks to Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and, yes, even George Lazenby for giving us so much Bond goodness over the years. In that spirit, we present our biggest BONDATHON yet with discussions of FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, THUNDERBALL, and ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. People think Daniel Craig's James Blonde started the more serialized storytelling of the franchise, but we're here to set the record straight! So gobble up some turkey and listen while you nap between football games, it's time for the Forgotten Film Pod!
You can also listen to the Forgotten Film Pod and all CineEFFeries on iTunes, Stitcher, and most pod-catchers near you.

Have you seen Black Widow? What did you think?
Yep! Saw it opening night like I've seen every MCU movie since probably Avengers. I liked it a lot! Its biggest flaw is not coming out between Civil War and Endgame, but I won't hold that against it. I used to watch a lot of Bond movies during TNT's Thanksgiving Bondathon thing, but I quickly soured on Bond because he's such a womanizer. Black Widow is like all of the fun of a Bond movie but I actually like the protagonist. Pretty over-the-top spy stuff and the villain might as well be a Bond villain. It’s great. I was iffy about the straight-up mind control element because generally that seems like lazier storytelling than brainwashing and other subtler forms of manipulation, but I think it worked in the end because it's a metaphor for both human trafficking victims and child soldiers, neither of whom have any meaningful control over their lives. I adored Natasha's fake family and I am fully on board with Yelena as a character. Presumably she's going to show up in Hawkeye and I can't wait. The sky battle at the end was a little over the top and I feel like maybe you don't want to have a character we all saw die from fall damage surfing debris safely all the way to the ground from an exploding fortress much higher up than that cliff on Vormir? Still fun to watch though.
Also Nat and Yelena throwing Alexei’s question about if they were on their periods back at him until he looked like he wanted to die was also one of the funniest things in any MCU movie and retroactively made some if the iffy parts of Ultron better by association.

10. things you said that made me feel like shit
“What do you mean James Bond is overrated?” Jack didn’t think Ianto’s tone could be any more aghast. He started to laugh but was cut off by the intensity of Ianto’s gaze.
“I just don’t get the appeal,” Jack defended, leaning back into the couch. “And I don’t quite get why you’re so into it. You’re literally a secret agent in a suit. A very handsome secret agent in a suit. Why do you need to watch one in the movies?” Jack raised an eyebrow. “Got a crush? Should I be jealous?”
“It’s not that simple,” Ianto protested, blushing bright red. “It’s more than the suit and the guns and the bravado.”
“Oh, I’ve got bravado,” Jack grinned. He leaned over to try and get some of the popcorn Ianto had made for their impromptu movie night, but Ianto yanked the bowl away. Jack pouted. “Fine. So what is it? The car? It is a rather nice car.” Ianto nodded in agreement, then shook his head.
“No, it’s just-” he sighed. “I can’t explain it. If you watched the films and didn’t get it, then there’s no hope for you.”
“Oh, I never actually saw any of them,” Jack said casually. Ianto’s eyes went wide, and Jack took advantage of his distraction to steal a handful of popcorn.
“None of them?” Jack shook his head. “Then you have no right to call James Bond overrated.” Ianto stood, taking the popcorn away with him. “Now, it’s settled. We’re going to have a Bondathon. And when we’re finished, I daresay you’ll have changed your tune.”
“All of them?” Jack asked, belatedly wondering what he’d gotten himself into. Ianto smirked.
“All of them.”
(They made it halfway through From Russia With Love before falling asleep in a pile of limbs and popcorn kernels.)

Jack and I just started a Bondathon in honour of Sean Connery. Praying that no alien invasions interrupt us. Also, no one talk to me until we're done, please.

Bondathon continued…I’d forgotten just how good looking Quantum of Solace is as a movie. It’s very much underrated IMHO, tightly plotted with great action sequences, and with some novel additions to the Bond travelogue including Haiti and Bolivia. Yes it lacks much in the way of an element of humour, but that criticism could be levelled at all of the Daniel Craig movies, and if there is a criticism to be made it’s perhaps that if it is too close to the Jason Bourne films then maybe they shouldn’t have hired Paul Haggis to co-write the screenplay.
Anyhow, it deserves more love than it gets, and it’s got that bang up theme song by Jack White and Alicia Keys, and Mr Lilly Allen in a role I’d completely forgotten about.

Welll tonights Bondathon I have nothing fun to report as the fun of this for me is waking up during random Bond movies during outragious scenes.....Which are more prominent during the early films then  the later films.Fell asleep during the Casino scene of  Licence to kill ,I woke up during a Judi Dench  M scene (Not sure if it was goldeneye or  tomorrow never dies ) ,woke up during the climax of tomorrow Never dies, and I think there was a power surge or something cause when I woke up my monitor was off

Is James Bond the saviour of UK Cinemas?
Is James Bond the saviour of UK Cinemas?
No Time To Die was originally meant to be released in April 2020 and was the first big film to announce it was pushing back to November 2020 but as things went on and we had the cinemas closed for months and then an attempt at reopening in the July 2020 didn’t fully go to plan for all chains with Cineworld quickly closing once again and rumours surrounding if they would ever actually be able to…

It's been quite the journey over the years, and it's all led to this: the rise and fall of SPECTRE and Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Rob is introducing Jordan and our special guest Josh Taylor, the Forgetful Film Critic Dot Com, to Connery classics FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE and THUNDERBALL, as well as the lonely Lazenby's ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. We are totes excite. Listen now, and come back in two weeks to hear our discussions of each movie immediately after watching them.
You can also listen to the Forgotten Film Pod and all CineEFFeries on iTunes, Stitcher, and most pod-catchers near you.
As always, special thanks to Josh for his assistance on the cold open.
