I have a ton of magazines that I have yet to read. When I buy these guys, I have every good intention of reading the magazines from cover to cover. But what happens most of the time is that they make their way onto a stack of other magazines that I have yet to read and as life happens, they just sit there. While doing the laundry today, I figured I’d finally start hacking my fat-ass pile of lovely mags.
This issue of Bon Appetit was the travel issue from May 2018. Beautiful food, photos, and writing all around, of course, and before I could even finish the cover story, so inspired by the article, I whipped out my travel palette and water brush and began drawing the cover, and I really like how it turned out. The things I like were all unintended, and I have my water brush to thank for all of it, really.
So, I finished the drawing and I finished the laundry, but as far as finishing the rest of the issue, I forgot about it until now, which leads me to my new resolution:
Until my all of current magazines are read and appreciated, no new magazines!

Current Events Reading Reccs
I had a couple of people asking me about my “current events” reading in general (news aggregators, podcasts, etc) so I figured I’d just list them off here.
I don’t read any tumblrs that are specifically focused on current events, I just kinda get news from various people I’ve followed, but I’ve found in general it helps to find people for whom the news is a hobby, not a consuming habit. I have communists and anarchists and prison abolitionists on my dash, but they aren’t people who have made that their identity, which removes the “You are insufferable” factor. So I guess find fandom weirdos with strong political views and follow ‘em.
Also I want to state at the top that part of why I’m on top of shit that I get through Tumblr is that I have a policy of never reblogging or reacting to anything until I have 1. read the article being linked and 2. done my own research. This has saved me a vast deal of embarrassment, because sometimes I’ll save something outrageous to research and before I can even research it, it’s been rebutted. I cannot stress how important the process of reading and research is -- you can’t get your news from headlines and particularly not clickbait you see on Tumblr.
As far as I know there’s no single tumblr clearinghouse for good high-level current events reporting and analysis (the analysis I think is a vital part) but if folks have resources they use, drop ‘em in the comments or reblogs.
Anyway, some mailing lists I belong to are:
Quartz Daily Brief: finance and tech, mainly. Back when they were for-pay I paid for them, this newsletter was that entertaining. I believe they’ve now gone fee-free but they sometimes link to paywalls. I get it as an email newsletter, that’s just a link to the web version.
Breakfast with ARTNews: Obviously a bit niche but I really like keeping up with the art world and they cover art crime too. The link is to the all-newsletters signup page, I only belong to Breakfast.
The Futurist: This is the most insufferable nonsense masquerading as news ever. The ads are indistinguishable from the content. But it does help me keep a finger hard on the pulse of what irritating tech bros are into. Watch scams unfold in real time!
I also follow a number of local interests -- community centers and neighborhood organizations primarily -- in Chicago, so those are always good to hunt up. Most major cities have a “citycast” podcast (just search “citycast [your city]” in your podcatcher) that is also good for local news.
Some websites:
Longreads: Since longform.org went under, the best place to find the current longform pieces that everyone’s talking about.
Brand Eating: Extremely niche, but I really love reading about “brand” food trends. It covers new food releases and sales and such in the areas of packaged food (potato chips, candy, etc), fast food, and casual dining. It’s also great as a resource for cheap eats.
I stopped reading Bon Appetit recently (they ran this appallingly sympathetic story about a dickhead hiring manager) but like, honestly, if you want to track food trends, the BA email newsletter is kinda the way to go. If you’d like good food news in podcast form, I recommend The Sporkful (it’s in the podcast list).
I used to read the Chicago Tribune, New York Times, and Fortune Magazine (which mostly scraped the not-awful stuff from Forbes) but I’ve cut it down to just the Trib; I don’t really need Fortune to keep me current and the NYT has morphed into a creepy proto-fash nightmare. The Trib has pretty good national/international coverage so if you don’t have a decent local paper it’s not bad, but I don’t know how much access you get as a nonpaying reader (I subscribe).
Podcasts:
Quartz has a podcast, Quartz Obsession, which is off-and-on in terms of when episodes come out but very interesting when they do.
Planet Money is a once-weekly podcast about economics, and has a daily show called “The Indicator” which is daily “small bites” current events coverage.
The Late Show and the Daily Show both have an “ears edition” podcast that’s just the show audio; I’ve stopped listening for the most part but if you want good cultural commentary, that’s the place to go.
The Journal by the Wall Street Journal is a weekly podcast focusing on one or two news stories, generally pretty relevant.
Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me is a panel show but it’s a fun way to get bite-sized news you can look up later in more detail if you want. And it’s taped in Chicago! If you listen you can hear me in the audience laughing. :D (I’m going to another taping in a few weeks!)
Behind The Bastards is actually a history podcast but if you’re listening current he does a bit of current-events commentary, and also I just really like it as a podcast.
Stuff You Should Know is a trivia podcast but they occasionally do current-events stuff.
The Sporkful is pretty good about current food news, although I run hot and cold on it.
I used to listen to a really good “professional” medical podcast, but it went full paywall when it started to offer certain forms of professional credit, so I found The House Of Pod as a very good free replacement. It’s not really for non-doctors, but as a non-doctor I still find it accessible and informative. (For medical history and curiosity, I do highly recommend Bedside Rounds, but I wouldn’t call it a current events cast.)
So that’s how I get my news -- it’s not what I would call fully comprehensive but it’s reasonably informative!

Hello Sophia,
I’ve been curious about any relationships and linkages between SMA title, Alba and Jinx. Finally, I’ve managed to discover Chris’ influencer profile on one marketing platform (note: Carbons Dating The Web estimated creation date: 2023-06-01).
There are some interesting facts and figures in the case study:
Premium US dog superfood brand, Jinx is redefining dog nutrition and is sold at Walmart stores across the country. Its audience are 71% female, typically single or married and aged in their thirties. English-speaking, Jinx’s followers are 84% US-based, with India, The Philippines, Indonesia and Brazil as secondary markets. Top cities for its customers include New York, LA, San Francisco and Chicago.
Looking at celebrity influences, Chris Evans does not appear in the list.
Media-wise, Buzzfeed, Betches Media, The New York Times, HGTV, The New Yorker, People Magazine, Vice and Bon Appetit come out on top for consumption.
Chris’ audience is 67% female, typically single and aged 25-34. English-speaking, his followers are typically based in the US, with Brazil, India, Italy and Mexico as other territories. Top cities include São Paulo, New York and LA. On basic demographics, Chris Evans and Jinx are rather well matched, particularly if the brand is hoping to reach a slightly younger customer base.
Diving into likes and interests, Film & TV rank highly, as well as music, dance, sport, college, poetry, Mexican food and spirituality. Pets is present, with 1.5% of the share, which is 1.3x the platform average, putting Chris Evan’s profile in the top 20% of all Instagram accounts for pets.
Looking at media consumption, Buzzfeed, BBC, CNN, 9GAG, New York Times, TIME Magazine, The New Yorker, GQ and Hugo Gloss dominate. Crucially, Jinx isn’t listed as one of Chris Evan’s follower’s main brand affinities. Instead, the likes of Marvel, Disney, NASA, Starbucks, Google, PlayStation and Sephora lead. That being said, no other pet food brand appears.
It is important to note that Chris Evans is one of a few celebrity investors in Jinx. However, he is still quite an organic brand ambassador, being known for his relationship with his dog. Overall, it’s a smart match for brand and talent that taps into authentic interests and with the addition of Evans as creative director for campaigns, it appears to be a more substantial collaboration than a simple awareness-based sponsorship.

Okay I'm here with the essay loosely inspired by this post and how the pronoun debate online always defaults to english which diminishes the work of people all over the world.
In swedish we have three singular third pronouns; han/honom (he/him), hon/henne (she/her) and den/det (it). Our language is thankfully not very gendered at all, which makes the whole thing a lot easier than for example latin based languages that genders exactly everything (we do basically have two neutrals instead, which is quite confusing at times, but I digress).
Back in the day when people wanted to convey an unknown or irrelevant gender they would say "han eller hon" meaning "he or she". It works but is quite cumbersome. In writing it was often "han/hon". This was the norm for as long as I know. Very similar to english.
I followed a few feminist blogs in the late 00s and they didn't like that "he" was always put first and started to write it as h*n, h/n, h#n and similar. It works in writing for an ingroup, but you can't pronounce that. So people settled for hen, a simple third option to hon and han.
It should be noted that at this point it was mostly still used for when the gender of a person is unknown or irrelevant, as the discussion around non binary people still hadn't reached the mainstream. Non binary people became almost an afterthought, as in "here's a gender neutral pronoun for when gender is irrelevant, or I guess if you're neither male or female".
So these feminist blogs started using hen, leftist debaters and writers for magazines and newspapers picked it up and started using it, which of course started a shit storm from the right. Newspapers had to figure out if they should allow it in their style guides or not.
People also started using it as a suffix where words usually ended in -en, like bloggen (the blog) to blogghen, klänningen (the dress) to klänninghen etc. It was mostly a joke around leftists to rile up the right and it sort of worked.
Nöjesguiden, a free weekly magazine about nightlife and culture, published a whole issue in february of 2012 where they changed the name to NöjesguideHen and every he and she was changed to the neutral Hen. The same year the children's book Kivi och monsterhund was published, only using hen.
Later that year, DN, one of the biggest daily newspapers in the country issued a statement saying that they would not allow hen as it could be seen as a political statement. People were talking more about the queer aspects of the word at this point which was apparently too much for DN.
This caused a bit of an uproar, lots of essays and blog posts and debates were had, and in 2014 SAOL, Word list of the Swedish Academy, added hen as a new word which was seen as the official stamp of approval for it, and publications started to follow suit.
Today it is used widely both in text and speech, it's a lot less loaded now as people just have gotten used to hearing it and it's actually quite practical. In hindsight it's fascinating that a massive culture debate that lasted for a couple of years now has completely calmed down and it became a new standard in the language in a relatively short amount of time.
TLDR; feminists and queers started to use a new neutral pronoun, the right had a breakdown, bon appetit.

Taco Bell Quarterly is the literary magazine for the Taco Bell Arts and Letters. We’re a reaction against everything. The gatekeepers. The taste-makers. The hipsters. Health food. Artists Who Wear Cute Scarves. Bitch-ass Wendy’s. We seek to demystify what it means to be literary, artistic, important, and elite. We welcome writers and artists of all merit, whether you’re published in The Paris Review, rejected from The Paris Review, or DGAF what The Paris Review is.  First and foremost, TBQ is about great writing. It’s about provoking and existing among the white noise of capitalism. We embrace the spectrum of trash to brilliance. Taco Bell Quarterly has tens of thousands of readers. We’ve been interviewed or mentioned in Vox, Salon, Food and Wine Magazine, Mental Floss, Yahoo, The Guardian, The New York Post, Publisher’s Weekly, Literary Hub, Bon Appetit and dozens more. Is this real? A joke? A literary psy-op? We don’t fully know. We just decided to write about Taco Bell. We are absolutely not affiliated with Taco Bell and make no profits. We can’t even get extra sauce in the drive-thru. Employees treat that shit like unicorn blood. Twitter
