Bomo Greenbark was a Nosaurian scout who fought with the Seperatists on his homeworld, New Plympto. Fighting the Empire alongside Jedi Master Dass Jennir following Order 66, Greenbark joined the crew of a smuggling ship to find his daughter, who was sold into slavery. Greenbark was tough and committed to his cause.

So I just finished up the Star wars dark times series and man, what a trip. This is probably one of my favourite stories set between episode 3 and 4 (the best timeframe for star wars content).

The story is about Jedi Master Dass Jennir and his quest to not get murdered to death by darth vader while going full ronin on the galaxy. One of my favourite points about Jennir is that he's specifically pointed out as being a sub par jedi by all accounts. He's no anakin and were he to face off against anyone of vaders calibre he'd fair about as well as luke did in empire but what's cool to see is the difference in skill between Jennir and any poor fool without the force on their side. That's where we get the absolutely badass reference to sanjuro in one of the few duels we see Jennir get into.(Dark times - blue harvest issue #5)

This was doin' visions before visions was visions. And it really does show that no matter how low tier the jedi they are still massively beyond even the best non-force sensitive.

Along with Jennir we get the one and only Bomo "You drew first blood, not me" Greenbark. This guy meets a jedi and his first instinct is pull out a scythe and go "bring it bitch".

If Korr hadn't already taken the title this guy would totally be the rambo of star wars.

This is a great standalone*(a certain character from the kotor comic shows up for an issue you might wanna read that first if you really feel the need to not get spoiled on anything but it's non intrusive enough that it won't really impact the experience) story that any fan of star wars will find enjoyment in. Seek it out legally or illegally (I won't tell ;))) and give it a read.

Star Wars Alien Species - Tintinna

The Tintinna, also known as T'iin-T'iin and Tin-Tin Dwarves, were a sentient species indigenous to Rinn.

Tintinna lived on their homeworld of Rinn, but their society was considered primitive by galactic standards. They lived in subterrannean burrows dug with only hands and feet. These nests were insulated by pieces of wood, leaves, and other materials. Tintinna in their native environment often smelled of wood chips. Without outside help, their technology advanced to the point of steam power.

The Tintinna divided themselves into many tribes. Each of these was ruled by a chief and a shaman. These tribes lived in small settlements carved out from the mountains of their world. Tintinna farmers worked the countryside to feed the population, and traders carried goods and news from one settlement to another.

Because Rinn was located in a remote portion of the Outer Rim Territories, Tintinna had little contact with the outside galaxy. Some offworlders used the planet as a hideout, and a few Tintinna left Rinn in their company. The Tintinna's natural curiosity allowed these explorers to adapt quickly to galactic technology. Many offworld Tintinna used their naturally keen senses to find work as lookouts. Those unfamiliar with the Tintinna often underestimated the creatures, mistaking them for pets or primitive simpletons.

During the Clone Wars, a Tintinna named Meekerdin-maa was a member of the crew of the transport ship, the Uhumele. Meekerdin-maa, or "Ratty" as he was nicknamed, was present when the fugitive Jedi Dass Jennir stowed away aboard their ship. Ratty accompanied both Jennir and the ex-Separatist Bomo Greenbark as they sought to rescue Greenbark's family from slavers. When that mission failed, Jennir left the crew, who continued to experience a string of bad luck, having run-ins with dangerous gangsters and Darth Vader himself. Ratty and the others eventually ended up on Kidron, where they met up with another Jedi fleeing the newly formed Galactic Empire - Beyghor Sahdett.

Later in the reign of the Empire, a Tintinna named Kit was taken in by the smuggler, Shug Ninx. Ninx believed Kit to be nothing more than a non-sentient creature, and at first thought of him as a pet. Despite not giving Ninx any indication that he had met off-worlders before, Kit was able to organize all of Ninx's tools and made some repairs to his ship. As soon as Ninx discovered this, he realized his assumptions had been a mistake, and he took Kit on as a partner.

Another Tintinna named Squeak was present in Mos Eisley on the fateful day when Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi hired Han Solo and Chewbacca.

They possessed pink skin but were covered in brown fur. Their ears were small and round, and they had small black eyes. Their hands were dexterous and pink with four clawed digits. Tintinna had teeth typical of rodent species, and they had to spend at least part of their time gnawing in order to keep their teeth from growing too large and cumbersome.

The Tintinna temperament was typically pleasant; Tintinna were curious, amicable beings who could get along with most other species.

Some in the galaxy believed the Tintinna to be related to the Ranats, due to their similar size and appearance.

Tintinna were small, 0.9 meters or 3 feet on average.

Tintinna age at the following stages:

1 - 2 Child

3 - 5 Young Adult

6 - 14 Adult

15 - 19 Middle Age

20 - 24 Old

Examples of Names: Kit, Oziaf, Rungs, Squeak.

Languages: Tintinna speak their native language of Rinnese, but are easily capable of learning Basic.

“A New Dawn” and “Levers of Power” thoughts

A New Dawn

So “A New Dawn” by John Jackson Miller was published in 2014, but I didn’t become a Star Wars super nerd until about two years ago. Now I’ve finally read the story of how Kanan and Hera met, and Rae Sloane’s introduction. (Some spoilers below.)

For the most part, I enjoyed it! I like stories about ex-Jedi and I really liked the setting of the planet Gorse and its moon Cynda. I got emotional about how the Empire was so eager to destroy the land just to further its mining goals.

Kanan is a funny protagonist, and he had some fantastic choice words for the Jedi Order: “The Jedi Order was more than an unpaid police force, more than just an exercise club that was into metaphysics.” I’m still reeling at that line aaahhh haha wow!

Since I’d already read the Aftermath trilogy, it was interesting to see Rae Sloane so young. I think she’s a more compelling character when she’s older and more self-aware, but it was still fun to see her so eager and confident! My favorite line by her was when she realized the extent of Count Vidian’s evil plan, and she thought, “But he would destroy Gorse’s population in the process. And worse, he would ruin Sloane’s career.” Rae!! Listen to yourself!! hahaha

I also LOVED the moment she said, “Arrest Count Vidian!” So exciting! And then Kanan compared the imagery of the stormtroopers turning on Vidian to his memories of the clone troopers turning on the Jedi, which, oof!! That hits hard. Kanan thought about how delighted he was to see the soldiers turn on Vidian, which reminded me of a “Legends” comic I read, Dark Times, in which an alien named Bomo Greenbark laughs at the clone troopers attacking the Jedi, since the Jedi and clones were invading his home planet. That’s another rough story.

I liked Miller’s other OCs too, especially Zaluna, the ex-surveillance system manager. I just love older women characters! And seeing Hera act proud of Zaluna’s journey was heartwarming.

I admit that I went into this story expecting more Kanera romance, or at least for Kanan to explain his backstory to Hera by the end. But the fact that so much went unspoken felt true to the writing of this couple in the show haha. Everything has to be subtle with them whether we like it or not. (I do like subtlety! But I also think it’s kind of hilarious how Star Wars downplays their romance so much.)

My main criticism of this story was that I found the ableism distracting! I was trying my best to interpret Count Vidian generously, but I didn’t have much energy for it. He’s a cyborg who needs prosthetics to live, much like Vader and Grievous, and just like them he’s very evil. Vidian isn’t a unique character in that regard, but, I kept thinking how Star Wars is really overdue for stories that challenge that narrative of the Evil Disabled Cyborg... 

The most baffling decision to me was when Kanan asked Zaluna if she would want treatment for her blind eyes--as in, I think she could have the opportunity to get robotic eyes--and Zaluna says No, because she doesn’t want to be “like Vidian.” I just!! Why do we need to frame it this way, that the reason she doesn’t want treatment is because she doesn’t want to be like an evil person? (We could easily say that the reason she doesn’t want robotic eyes is because she worked in surveillance and so doesn’t trust the idea of putting cameras in her eyes that other people could use against her. The framing just rubbed me the wrong way.)

Anyway I may be overreacting over a niche Star Wars novel...

I do like John Jackson Miller. He also wrote the Knight Errant comics, which I am a huge fan of and definitely recommend.

“Levers of Power”

The book I have that contains A New Dawn also contains the short story “Levers of Power” by Jason Fry, which I also read, and I wanted to mention it because I loved it a LOT, wow. No mixed feelings on this one! It was exactly what I needed! A story of a messy, complicated, villainous woman who realizes that she’s going to lose, and so the best she can do is lose gracefully while all the men around her flounder and fall.

This is a story about how Rae Sloane reacts to the Battle of Endor. I actually felt breathless reading it. Fry is a good writer and it sure was exciting, aahh!!

For me personally, a reason I love Kreia is because she’s an incredibly smart woman who sees in the Force that her world is ending in multiple ways, and so the best she can do is to lose gracefully, even going so far to plot her own death. Now that my feelings for Kreia are more complicated because of revelations about her writer, it just felt nice to read a Star Wars story about a similar woman character. 

Rae doesn’t see the future in the Force, but she still has razor sharp wits, and it’s oh-so-satisfying to see her take down the men officers around her. She didn’t want to be right about losing the battle, but she knew that she was, and so she made decisions to flee in order to fight another day. I just loved it a whole lot. It was like a microcosm of her arc in Aftermath.

It was more of an emotional experience for me than anything else! I just sympathize so much with these cynical women losers, what can I say omg

Star Wars: Dark Times Volume 4 – Blue Harvest (ISBN 978-1-59582-264-2)

Dass Jennir returns to the spotlight when he finds himself wandering the galaxy as a broken Jedi and looking for odd jobs to help out his money situation. A girl named Ember gives him a job to rid her town of slavers and spicers and restore the town to what it once was. Lies can be tricky though, and Jennir knows she's more of a liar than anyone and when he sets in motion a plan to get the spicers and slavers to kill each other, he gets caught in the middle and Ember tries to make matters even worse for him!

It's nice to see the series focus on Dass again and we also see bits of Vader and what he's doing. His thoughts are almost child-like in that he's constantly wondering if the Emperor wants him dead or needs him for his plans. He even goes as far as to kill Commander Vill to make sure the Emperor can't be rid of him like he did the Jedi. Dass is seen as a cunning warrior in a land filled with warriors and pride and the art makes this even better with the action sequences all over and Dass having to combat the slavers and the spicers on multiple occasions. Bomo and the crew encounter Beyghor Sahdett, a Jedi that has come to join their crew and even saves them on one occasion. The writing is great, as always with this series, and the name “Blue Harvest” is a neat little wink to the fake title of Star Wars Episode IV. We only get one textless comic cover, however. Overall, this was a fun read and very informative about Dass's Jedi teachings that he's retained and the crew's struggle to get along after their two botched sales. This is definitely a series to keep up with!

It's been a little less than two months, here's an update for myself:

-Finished Into the Dark - Finished Republic. -I did not progress one bit in my canon Original Trilogy comics reading, I still have everything I wrote down from that left

-Finished Shatterpoint -I read all of Dark Times and Purge and every Darth Vader miniseries from that era, most of them were great but I did encounter Bomo Greenbark and I wish I didn't -Forgot Queen's Peril was on my list, rn I'm zigzagging between THR books and Legends books so no idea when I'll get to the canon ones -Yeah Jedi Trial was disappointing (not enough Asajj) -No idea when I'll get to the canon ESB-ROTJ Comics. Next year probably -Rest of THR books and such - almosttttt finished, I have The Fallen Star and everything after it left -read The Cestus Deception, not the biggest fan of it but it was nice -Dark Rendezvous unabridged audiobook out by the end of January, I'll listen to it then -Queen's Hope, Catalyst, and Rebel Rising - forgot I had canon books to read, I'll get to them sometime later -again, no progression the canon OT comics front
