bolverk (the homie) for inktober

finished banner saga 2 the other night... oh it was so good. sooo much better than the first one. the two main stories--alette’s coming of age story to learn to be a leader when she’s ridiculed and mistrusted, bolverk’s slow descent into madness as he is possessed by bellower--were both so incredibly tense and emotional.

the factors that made them particularly interesting were alette’s role as a protagonist in lieu of her father, and bolverk’s extremely close relationship with his lieutenant, folka. alette’s personal journey and the bolverk/folka relationship were the emotional cores of each of the stories. also i can’t believe i didn’t notice this (well, i did, but i thought it was just accidental): bolverk has this frenzy ability that will do two hits per turn, the first is your intended target and the second targets a random unit adjacent to him? bolverk, even in a frenzy, will NEVER hit folka. if she’s the only one there it’s blocked/guarded/whatever. that’s like. god, talk about storytelling through gameplay mechanics. that’s brilliant and deeply emotional, especially after what happens to bolverk.

the one stupid thing bs2 introduced was the horseborn shit. the horseborn are already weird enough in that they are some of the few non-white people in the cast and they are... basically centaurs. and also they don’t speak the main language of the game and are constantly talking in sentence fragments that feel incredibly racialized, even though their language is clearly some form of gaelic. if that weren’t enough, there’s an added Horseborn Racism element from several major characters that’s like. what the fuck why is this in here. this is how you can tell the game was written by bioware alumni -_-

Fasolt: We are MIGHTY and VALOROUS!!

replayed banner saga 1 & 2 back to back over the holidays. it's one of those games that im so happy exists. the art and how melancholy the story and world is reminds me so much of the last unicorn, which is always a good thing. i miss seeing 2D animation used in movies and games.
