YRSA (my Star Wars OC) ⚙️
Let me introduce you to my OC in the Star Wars universe! She is Yrsa, a curious young engineer girl, who deeply resonates with nature and machines. About her tale in a nutshell: As a young child, Yrsa lived in a workshop and was surrounded by all kinds of mechanisms and gadgets, learning a lot of the necessary robotics from her father, who was an ambitious engineer. Later they had to flee their home from the wrath of the empire and crashed on an uninhabited planet while escaping. Yrsa was left alone at a very young age and was stranded there. She befriended in the woods with her animal companion, Cog, the acklay. Many years later, Cad Bane turns her life upside down, when he is sent after her to capture the girl. In her future Yrsa must leave her beloved forest and will live on Lower Coruscant, as an outcast traveling engineer. After the wilderness, she'll have to survive in the urban jungle. During her journey she'll even cross her path with an unexpected new ally, who comes from the shadows in a shroud of mystery... 😎 Then the little lady's life will again reach a turning point.

Yrsa's adventure started in this fanfiction: Tales of the Flame and the Rain | AO3 Thanks to my writing partner @river-mort and @deepbluespace4 for the enormous help and motivation with our conversations. I love you, guys! I also send a big hug those who have read or liked my fic so far. 💚

In the night he saw a strange woman rummaging around the camp's supply's. He made sure to scare her off but he found himself strangely captured by her. Her name was Yrsa.
He made sure to feed her and ensured she was well. Despite her oddness, he ended up singing praises at her and she became the first woman to take a liking to his advances. He promised to come back soon. Now he truly had a good motivation to go 'hunting'.

Lovely fellow writers, let's play an ask game, but this time, let's shake things up! Pick a character from one of your fics (it can be an Original Character or a Canon Character, whatever you prefer) and give us the answer to the questions above! ⬆️⬆️⬆️
Tagging @legolasbadass @linasofia @xxbyimm @shiinata-library @enchantzz @i-did-not-mean-to @middleearthpixie @fizzyxcustard @sotwk @heilith @glassgulls @asgardianhobbit98 @frosticenow @laurfilijames @guardianofrivendell @lordoftherazzles and everyone who'd like to join! (If I haven't tagged you, I'm sorry for my Swiss cheese brain in advance, but I'd love you to join this game anyway!) 💖
💎Here's my character - Yrsa, Thorin's stubbornly chaotic love interest from Blame It on Cider:
What is the character’s go-to drink order? You know it already, it's ... cider (obviously and infamously 🤣🤣🤣). That's the drink that put Yrsa and Thorin into that crazy mess in the first place. She can't just say no to it and then things just happen...
What is their grooming routine? When on the road, Yrsa loves to bathe in mountain streams and takes special care of her hair, using herbal oils and her mountain goat bristle brush before rebraiding it.
What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? She doesn't have much money and whatever she earns, she spends during her travels for food and other necessities. She is not a big spender and does not feel the need to buy extravagant stuff for herself. Instead, she has been saving her money for a while now, wanting to open her own herbalist's shop at some point. Since her little "gem" appeared in her life, she spends the money on the pebble's needs.
Do they have any scars or tattoos? No visible scars besides the usual cuts on her fingers from gathering and processing the herbs she needs for her work. As for tattoos, she has a few of them - some of them show her dwarf clan affiliation and her craft.
What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? The last time she cried happened just before meeting Thorin in winter. It was totally not because of the fact she had a dream of him dancing with her, and definitely not because she might have missed him nor because she understood their relationship did not have any chances to actually happen. She REALLY wasn't. Really. She was so over him!!!
Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? She is the youngest child, the only daughter (she has two older brothers) and therefore everyone in the family dotes on her. Plus, the brothers are really, really OVERPROTECTIVE, and her parents can't wait until she finally settles down and finds a proper and respectable dwarf to marry.
Describe the shoes they’re wearing. She wears sturdy, fur-lined dwarven boots that are perfect for walking on mountain trails, and very comfortable.
Describe the place where they sleep. As she's constantly on the road, she sleeps wherever she can - on a patch of moss in a forest, in a cave, under a spruce, in a tavern or guesthouse along the road - wherever she happens to find herself at the end of the day.
What is their favorite holiday? Winter solstice celebrations! In winter, she is usually back at home with her overbearing loving family, and there's lots of laughter, music, good food, fun... and cider.
What objects do they always carry around with them? Her backpack filled with all she needs to survive in the wilderness (a flint striker, a knife, some food, warm clothes, and so on), there are pouches with different kinds of herbs, herb remedies and any tools she may need for healing, her herbalist's diary, some coins... and Thorin's ring (around her neck).
So my problem with most ‘get to know your character’ questioneers is that they’re full of questions that just aren’t that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.)  Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.
If I’m doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought I’d share the ones that get me (and my students) good results:
What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)
What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)
What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)
Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)
What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)
Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)
Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)
Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)
What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.)
What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)

Yrsa holds the title “Sage of the Twin Dragons,” though the aforementioned twin dragons no longer travel alongside her. They are friends who have split their paths.
Physical Capabilities:
Strength: Yrsa is stronger than your average person, but not by much.
Dexterity: Yrsa’s grace and dexterity is supernatural, she is incredibly flexible and acrobatic as a result of receiving martial arts training since the age of seven.
Hardiness: Yrsa is rather tough, having survived many a battle. Her inner ki has rendered her entirely immune to most diseases and poisons.
Weapons: Yrsa primarily uses her fists in combat, though she has been known to occasionally draw her shortsword and wield it in tandem.
Mental Capabilities:
Intelligence: Yrsa’s knowledge is not the type found in books. As far as general knowledge goes, she knows about as much as anyone else. However, in regards to medicine, her knowledge is incredibly vast.
Wisdom: Yrsa has been taught philosophy and various forms of meditation from a young age. Her knowledge of herself and of the nature of things is great, and the untold time spent in the tower of reflection has deepened her perspectives of the world and of reality.
Charisma: Yrsa can be witty and charming, though she doesn’t necessarily have a silver tongue. Her real charm often comes from how genuine she is with others.
Supernatural Capabilities:
Ki: As a monk, Yrsa has mastered the supernatural energy known as ki. It fuels many techniques, most commonly either momentarily increasing her speed or allowing her to heal herself and others.
Healing Palm, Subduing Fist: Yrsa is capable of transferring the vitality of those she injures. After wounding an enemy, she can utilize her ki to heal someone near her enough to recover from a similar wound to the one she inflicted. Alternatively, she can focus and channel her ki to heal someone without the need to injure others.
Destructive Fist: Yrsa is capable of inverting the energy of the healing palm, subduing fist. When she does so, she is able to thrust violent and dark energy at someone nearby after injuring a primary target with her martial arts or with a weapon. The target of her destructive ki is inflicted with similar damage to the initial target.
Stunning Palm: Yrsa can channel ki to attempt to momentarily cause someone’s muscles to sieze, going rigid and halting their movement.
Ten Patient Steps of the Infinite Circle: Yrsa channels her ki to dispel conflict, moving slowly and gaining power with each step while restraining from any hostile action. The more steps she takes, the more energy builds until it is released in a wave of healing energy to all those she wishes to heal around her.
Ignore Pain: Yrsa uses martial acupuncture to reduce someone’s sensitivity to pain, duration varies.
Enhance Might: Yrsa uses martial acupuncture to momentarily give someone explosive power. After the ki she invests is consumed, they experience extreme vertigo and disorientation, often accompanied by great pain from overexerting themselves.
Self-Actualizing Fist - Ouroboros Hand: Yrsa consumes a massive amount of ki, creating an explosion of violent energy that manifests as a massive fist that descends upon an area striking all within. This is considered her most powerful technique.
Yrsa’s Story:
Yrsa lived a comfortable childhood with her family in a hunting village located in the north. The locals traded in furs, and her father Torsten owned several goats and oxen who provided for their family. Yrsa’s mother Frida was a stout woman with big hands who was never seen without her apron on. She worked as a nanny for several of the other families within the village who couldn’t watch after their children every day due to the business of the fur trade and the travel required. Because of this, Yrsa and her elder brother Sune had many other “siblings” as the children Frida “nannied” were essentially brought up under the same roof as her own.
While the weather was tough and the ground was hard, the Gunhilldrs made due every year and wanted for nothing more than full bellies and warmth by the hearth. Content to live a simple life, Yrsa’s greatest pleasure was helping her mother and friends. Life was good - but good things rarely last.
When Yrsa was seven, she experienced hell for the first time.
A half-giant tribe whose typical food resources had dwindled away turned to raiding Yrsa’s hometown to survive the harsh winter. They planned to pillage the place and move into the homes until the worst of the cold passed. This meant that there was no place in their ambition for the villagers. The militia was no match for the desperate and starving half-giants. Yrsa ran into the woods with her brother Sune to escape them, unaware that an entirely different danger awaited them there.
The winter had not only been cruel to the half-giants. Its cruelty was indiscriminate, and Sune was the first to realize. A pack of hungry wolves began to close in on the siblings, and Sune did his best not to show fear as his parents had taught him. When Yrsa saw them however, she could not control her terror. Smelling prey, the wolves pounced.
Sune fought to protect his younger sister, but a lone adolescent hunter was no match for five wolves. The wolves devoured Sune in front of her, and, paralyzed by fear and grief, Saga fell to the ground in abject horror. She knew she would die if she stayed, but she couldn’t gather any strength in her legs. She closed her eyes and prayed for a miracle.
A flash of light, followed by the sound of growling, and then whimpering as the wolves ran away. It seems her miracle had come. Yrsa opened her eyes to see a man with a long white beard and strange robes mournfully looking over her brother’s remains.
“I am sorry child, this boy’s body is beyond what I can mend. But you are not past saving.”
The man who she would later call master swept Yrsa up in his arms and headed towards town. He encountered the pillaging half-giants and set the child down, tears drying on Yrsa’s face and freezing in her eyelids. Sha Wang-Lei drew his blade, and as the half-giants struck out at him, none of their attacks hit. Instead they were repelled by the martial artist’s overwhelming strength, retreating back into the mountains with arms full of food and pelts.
Yrsa, having seen such a display of power, wanted nothing more than to achieve similar might. The barbarians had taken her home and family from her, and the wild had taken her only blood brother. If Sha Wang-Lei wasn’t going to chase them down and kill them, Yrsa would. Her family’s blood being spilled demanded that blood was repaid in kind. Yrsa begged Sha Wang-Lei to teach her, and he reluctantly accepted. However, he did not teach her destructive techniques, instead teaching her only to heal.
Yrsa took on the name Saga, promising to remember those who fell and vowing to avenge them. She wouldn’t let their stories go untold, buried beneath bloodied snow. As Sha Wang-Lei expected, she was unsuited to the lifestyle of an Infinite Circle practitioner, the name of his martial arts school. The core principles of the martial arts require a clarity that often comes from abandoning passionate emotions, something truly difficult for the young woman whose motivation for martial arts in the first place was revenge.
When the mind is clouded, it becomes difficult for the ki to flow properly. On top of this, her studies being focused on medicine over fighting only infuriated her more. Her master had demonstrated great offensive power when he defeated the goliaths, but he refused to teach her the destructive side of the infinite circle until Saga’s understanding of the Infinite Circle broadened.
Eventually, Saga departed from her master and was given the tome of their martial arts to take with her in her journey. She ended up uniting with a group of mercenaries and became a founding member of the Slayers of Seven, but that’s a story for another time. Near the conclusion of the Slayers of Sevens’ journey, Saga discovered a horrific truth - that Sha Wang-Lei had lied to her.
She had known her master as a traveling monk from a far off land. In truth, he was the exiled prince who committed horrible atrocities in the name of justice. He founded a martial arts school where the practitioners’ own techniques slowly killed them, and he corrupted a holy artifact with his unbalanced ki. Master Sha and Saga eventually faced off in a confrontation where he revealed he intentionally let Sune die that day he saved her. He only needed one student, and he could sense that Saga was going to be easier to mold into the soldier he needed. She was unable to defeat him there, being forced to retreat.
It was then that Saga sought out the Tower of Reflection under the guidance of the Twin Dragons, mythical beings who had reached out to her. They had once served her master, but after Sha Wang-Lei descended into madness, they had no desire to continue serving him. Within the tower, Saga spent an untold amount of time in meditation and training, being granted enlightenment for a final battle against her master. In that battle, she was unparalleled, far surpassing the power allowed to any mortal. But it was short-lived. The Tower of Reflection was not some simple shortcut to power. It was a place only reached through the mind, and her momentary enlightenment was stripped away after the conclusion of the battle. Ever since, she has never been able to enter the Tower again.
With her master defeated, she concluded her adventures with the Slayers of Seven and founded her own martial arts school, teaching the true form of the Infinite Circle martial art. But even then, she felt unfulfilled. The enlightenment she had momentarily grasped still eluded her, and she set off on her own to discover what she still lacked.

Yrsa assembled a useful helper for Courier. Since the boy's life is immensely busy, the mechanical animal helps to keep order and does the chores around him, but if necessary, it can also prove to be a useful companion on dangerous missions. The little guy also suitable as a pet, it just needs some charge and sometimes a pat on the head. Our main inspiration behind the droid was the Boston Dynamics' adorable robot dog, Spot. Since they also canonically exist in the Star Wars universe:
