honestly I didn't hate eremika as much as I thought I would- both of them are emotionally immature idiots who feel a lot but have no idea how to deal with said feelings. their relationship is definitely a lot of wasted potential but idk they are cute in their own imperfect and somewhat uneasy way. was that ending scene weird definetly but like eh gothic romance fan I've read and seen much worse things and called it peak romance so it's like weird but like okay also im very drunk slightly tipsy and I just finished aot just cuz I wanted to feel something and man I feel a lot of things also I think there might be a cultural difference too because in the west it's all like gulululu sloppy kiss gulululu fucking and like I grew up with old Bollywood romance where mfs don't even kiss so stolen glances and flushed cheeks and "ill always wrap your scarf over and over again" means wayyyy more than an infinite number of kisses. I get why people don't like it but yea I like them they are so fucking embarrassing and stupid. Eren's randi rona (hindi phrase exact translation is whore crying but semantics is probably bitch whining) was so funny and pathetic i've never laughed so hard but it is embarrassing in a way that makes so much sense for this suicidal maniac. I thought I would hate mikasa because I linger in the subreddits because social media kalesh and lafda is something I feed off of like a vampire sucking blood after escaping the coffin that held them for centuries (kalesh/lafda is hindi for fights) anyways so silly goofy fun idk what y'all are on about she's so kool not really a Mary Sue because she sucks at emotional intelligence and as a leader like definitely too driven by feelings but tbh I love that about her and her bond with other characters is so precious to me. I get why she's unlikable she is so flawed but idk I love her. the fanfic writers are so mean to her like oh my god why is she always this weird obsessed stalker that gets in the way of eren and y/n and historia is always someone y/n is insanely jealous of like please why can't we all be best friends and braid each other's hair

A little something about erehisu too- tbh I don't think its obsessive desperate fan behaviour like it's a very good ship imo. I have mixed feelings about it but idk lowkey makes sense. not in a "these people are great for each other and will be so cute as more than friends" way but more like a "oh wow they have a lot going on, they are good friends and the people they love are people they can't be with so it would make sense if they both are emotionally vulnerable enough that they end up doing something" kinda way. would've definitely made it more interesting because I thought sidelining a character like historia who had so much potential would hopefully have a bigger meaning and some greater part of Eren's plan but no bro is an idiot who has no idea what he is doing.

Mixed feelings about historia too- I liked her arc but the amount of plot armour that surrounds her kinda pisses me off. also the irl jaegerists and incels on reddit are so annoying they've made her into chaderen loser's trad wife who sits at home with the baby and shakes her head with a disapproving pout when he returns home after genocide like I know for a fact canon historia would be disgusted by this narrative. also oh my god the lengths these people go to prove that her relationship with Ymir was just a one sided obsession and not a lesbian romance is insane. like yea historia doesn't have to be lesbian she could be bi but that relationship was definitely mutual and romantic

Her Chimerstry paired with her knowledge of Sadhana make her terrifying if you are lured into her domain. Parvati is just about the oldest character in our VTM repertoire! She was Embraced during the Bronze Era of ancient Northern India. She's older than Harrakhty both in terms of actual age and physical age, but is younger Generation-wise when it comes to their bloodlines. She survived barely the curse of Zapathasura, having gone mad within the Setite temple but thankfully non-lethally taken down by her husband in his God form. I love my lady so much!!

I know I complain about this a lot, but it really bugs me how the word “incel” just means “bratty man on the internet who says mean shit about women” now, usually in a way that’s entangled with those guys who called themselves “trad” and were catholic for two months. It just muddies the water up for no clear reason or purpose. It’s like slang creep or something.

I don’t pay that much attention to them on their forums anymore, but the incels always struck me as really distinct from other internet nuisance personality types. They’re weirdly self-aware of how they use their lack of romantic success as an avatar for their self-hatred. Another thing that stuck out to me was, while the right wing internet nuisances tend to have a high and mighty attitude about what they’d call vice, the incels would talk on their forums pretty openly about addiction and suicide. They tend to be more stem-y, and rarely, if ever, religious. Stuff like that.

One thing I remember reading there once was a thread asking, “What is the most black pilled Bollywood movie?” I feel like this is a pretty good example of the sort of thing that they’re concerned with. A lot of them believe ghoulish things about women, but they’re mainly concerned with their philosophy that says, “people and circumstances cannot and do not change.” And this incel film studies example is one of those weird ways that it manifests. The idea of women is involved but it’s very clearly not about that. Meanwhile, I think with theater for the right wing nuisance internet guys, the concern begins and ends with women.

I’m not defending the incels or anything. They’re their own worst enemies by indulging in this. But these strike me as very different personality types.

This is all entirely vibes-based, but that’s the whole premise of this blog. Sometimes I just need to write something and say “source: my mind”.

The Marvels (2023)

Not usually reviewing films but here we are. A friend of mine invited me to the cinema to see The Marvels. And so we did, two days ago.

Neither of us expected much. I haven't seen Ms. Marvel. I thought Captain Marvel was 'meh' and a bit bland. Not offensive in any way (if you discount the blatant milatary propaganda) but ultimately Just A Marvel ProductTM. And not even a fun one. At least not fun for me.

And no offence to Teyonah Parris, but her character was definitely the least interesting thing about WandaVision. That's not saying much, seeing as that miniseries was great and one of the best things Marvel did since Infinity War... But it just goes to say that this didn't seem that promising.

The trailer for it looked quite cool though.

My friend Marek, who was bitching to me about how bad Captain Marvel is for years now, invited me to see The Marvels with him in the cinema. Mostly as a joke. Although he did enjoy Ms. Marvel. But still, neither of us expected much.

To our surprise - The Marvels is really good and we both enjoyed ourselves a lot.

It's really, really good.

While I don't think it can stand shoulder to shoulder with stuff like The Suicide Squad, Across the Spider-verse or GotG Vol. 3, I still feel comfortable calling it one of the best superhero movies of this decade so far. It's easily the 2nd best MCU movie since Spider-man: Far From Home, imo. (admittedly, I haven't seen all of them, so take this hot take with a grain of salt... I just really enjoyed The Marvels)

So now I'm gonna do a wee bit of gushing about some of the reasons why it's so good. (spoilers bellow)

Carol, Kamala, and Monica are just really fun to watch? Their interaction is amazing.

Kamala can be a bit cringey but in an authentically teenage way and I really enjoyed that! Her being a huge fan of Captain Marvel never stopped feeling real. Yeah, of course she's into RPF.

Consequences! I love when things in stories have consequences. And this is all built around consequences to the stuff Captain Marvel did. She did them with good intentions... But that didn't necessarily matter. And I love that. It adds a bit of complexity and nuance that's less and less common in superhero movies these days.

Which ties into... Carol not being perfect. She's amazing and powerful but she can't save everyone.

Carol is also... really fun? With a slight nudge she just became a really well-written, interesting protagonist? I love this version of Captain Marvel and I want more!!! Brie Larson finally gets to show off a bit as an actress!

She just really gave me Xena vibes, in the best possible way.

While the villain isn't an all-time great, the actress went for dignity and it payed off. She feels iconic and you understand where she's coming from.

Monica's sacrifice was quite powerful and kinda hit me.

The "training sequence" where Carol, Monica, and Kamala are practicing the switching is perfect. I love it. No notes.

I love that while it's only an indirect continuation of Captain Marvel, it takes the best bits from that film and builds on them. For me, Goose is the best bit of that film - a cat, but make it eldritch and alien, as well as bigger on the inside? Nice, love it. So what do we do with that idea the second time around? MORE CATS!!! I got a bit excited when I saw the kittens in the trailer and they did not disappoint. (Can the next movie be set on their planet? Please?)

But it's not just "there are kittens now" though. THE KITTENS ARE INTEGRAL TO THE PLOT. It's not just there to be there, but it's an important plot point. And it's so fun!

Nick Fury is also fun.

But it's not just taking what worked and expanding on it. This movie got really creative!

For example - the worlds! Especially the Bollywood planet. Great stuff.

That's just some of the reasons to like this film. I'm probably gonna watch it again when it's on Disney+

If you haven't seen it yet, go do that it if it's still playing in a cinema near you. It's definitely worth a watch if you are in the mood for a fun, well-made superhero film.

I'm really looking forward to what Nia DaCosta does next. This film really didn't deserve to underperform and I hope she gets another stab at a big blockbuster like this in the future.

Jab We Met, recommended by @inardentdaylight, available on Tubi. Synopsis: Aditya, a heartbroken tycoon on the verge of committing suicide, aimlessly boards a train. He meets Geet, a high-spirited girl who plans to elope with her lover, and finds himself pulled into her crazy life. It’s famous for a Really Good Rain Scene.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, recommended by @milkteawithrusk, available on Prime. Synopsis: From Europe's picturesque cityscapes to Punjab's vibrant yellow flower fields, Raj and Simran's soul-stirring love conquers everything, except for a disapproving patriarch's heart. Apparently this was SRK and Kajol’s first movie together?? Or at least the one where they became famous as an onscreen couple.

Both are supposed to be very romantic and very aesthetically pleasing, so I think you’d have fun with either one! Though I don’t know how they end. If either of the ladies who recommended these to me would like to say more, please do! And tag @chrispy-cronchy so she can see it 🙈

I'm still chewing glass over the 2023 THREE MUSKETEERS movies.

See, I read a lot of vintage swashbucklers once upon a time: Dumas, Sabatini, Hope, Weyman. A while back, when I was writing fairytale retellings in a grab bag of different narrative styles as a learning exercise (Bollywood Beauty and the Beast! Wuxia Sleeping Beauty! Romantic suspense Snow White!) I tried doing a homage to vintage swashbucklers; and I ran smack into two main problems. First, a swashbuckler is by nature an aristocratic and therefore classist artform; much too classist for me to play straight. Second, the defining feature of the swashbuckler is a preoccupation with notions of honour and shame, and I both as a person and as an author am far too preoccupied with notions of right and wrong to play that straight, either.

In a swashbuckler, the notion of personal honour is paramount. In THE PRISONER OF ZENDA, for instance, the hero nobly chooses not to run away with the princess he's fallen in love with because she is engaged to the real king and he's just the imposter; both of them are honour bound to fulfil their duty to the real king. Honour is precious because it's what sets a gentleman apart from the common herd, and if that honour is lost then suicide is the only option. A man might be obliged to commit suicide if he cannot pay his debts or keep his word to his king; a woman, of course, must be ready to stab herself rather than suffer the villain's Loathsome Embraces (TM). (I always found myself wondering why, if she has a knife ready to hand, she can't simply stab the villain instead - but such reasoning rarely occurs to the swashbuckler heroine).

Under such conditions I found myself incapable of writing a swashbuckler myself. Moreover, I saw other authors wrestling with the same challenge and failing. Isabel Allende's ZORRO: A NOVEL, for instance, tackled the classist elements of the classic swashbuckler by making Zorro the joint creation, not just of a Spanish don, but also his Indian servant and the female narrator. The problem was that the novel was no fun at all and nothing like a swashbuckler. Without notions of class and more importantly, honour, it had ceased to have the loony, self-indulgently melodramatic illogic of the genre.

The 2023 THREE MUSKETEERS amazed me because it solved these issues fairly neatly. In the first movie, D'ARTAGNAN, it does so, I believe, by tethering the notion of honour and dishonour mostly to notions not so much of class as of nationalism. There are loyal Frenchmen and women, and then there are traitors who would sell out France to their enemies in England; and the heroes try to save the queen's honour not because a lady's honour is something a gentleman of good blood protects if he can regardless of the truth of what he is defending; but because they are loyal Frenchmen and the queen, despite emotional entanglements, is staunchly loyal to France. I am ambivalent about this nationalistic streak; it never becomes jingoistic, but it should be noted that nationalism is no more ethics-based than classism is. It's just more congenial to the modern palate.

While the nationalist themes remain evident in the second movie, MILADY, this movie also gives us a notion of honour and shame that turns the patriarchal class structure on its head. Milady, as in the original book, originates as a runaway taken in by the Comte de la Fere. As a woman in a patriarchal society, Milady has it rough whether you're looking at the book or the movie. In both, her husband discovers that she's a wanted criminal and chooses either to hang her himself (book) or hand her over to the authorities for the same fate (movie). Either way I think I'd be choosing violence too. But in the 2023 movie, Milady is condemned to death, whereupon she begs to be allowed suicide instead, specifically as a means of asserting her own dignity as a woman against the misogynistic world that has always insisted upon defining her as a criminal because she will not suffer its abuse in silence.

This is all firmly in the movie's subtext - don't imagine that the screenplay puts all this into a hamfisted speech. Still, I loved it because it gives us the same honour-based melodrama a good swashbuckler should, instead of abandoning the notion entirely. Where it departs from the swashbuckler template is that the notion of honour is not about protecting existing privilege, but dignifying one who has been denied it. (Of course, I don't think that suicide is ever a healthy life decision; I'm just saying that it's the way Milady tries to assert her own dignity). In other words, the 2023 THREE MUSKETEERS keeps the honour/shame motive of classic swashbucklers while successfully disentangling it from the classism it originally protected. Which is super clever and effective.
