my random thoughts on The Devil's Chord (posting here because it got deleted off letterboxd so my review also got deleted 😭)
Ok listen. I've been a Doctor Who fan since I was 16 and a musician of multiple instruments since I was 10. In between playing music every single day and coming up with silly Who headcanons with my friend during tutor group, I've certainly dreamt of a Doctor Who episode about the power of music. So the premise of this one really excited me!
Sadly I didn't like how it was executed at all. IMO they only scratch the surface of mythologising music's power and should have gone much deeper. I adored the scene with Ruby playing piano on the rooftop and would have loved to seen that taken further. I was hoping they'd explore the concept of sound itself since it's such a blurred line between what counts as music or not.
Ok music is gone but is crying not just a slow and sad version of singing? Doesn't your heartbeat remind you of a drum rhythm? What about rain or hail hitting a tin roof like a marching snare? Is a ticking clock not just a metronome? If music is gone, would humanity not find new ways of expression and perhaps music itself would reveal itself in hidden places (with The Doctor's help!) because music is just THAT powerful and we humans can't help ourselves!! [Insert The Doctor's I Love These Dumb Humans So Much speech]. Maybe I'm unfairly projecting my own fanfic idea from years ago onto this but lol idc my idea is better. Music is everywhere bitch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyways the villain was genuinely fun and scary, except for all the connected backstory stuff which I didn't really care for. I didn't like that it became more about that instead of Music Is Awesome. Also didn't like that their defeat is from some illusive 'chord' which isn't really explained by any science or emotion. The Doctor Plays Random Notes Until Villain Dies. Really??? That's so boring and anti-climactic. I'd much prefer a The Love Of Music Prevails as an ending.
Looooved the production design, costumes, the '63 Who references, the way they played with the show's music score and had meta-humour. Kinda sucks there wasn't even a glimpse of a Beatles song. Couldn't everyone put their wallets aside to see two massive British staples combine their powers for good? And ok I DID enjoy the ending, it was extremely Bollywood of them ❤️
#doctor who#dw spoilers#doctor who spoilers#the devil's chord#my posts#i really do love how fun this new season and doctor is tho. i think ncuti and millie are delightful!#edit: also can't stop thinking about River Song's 'nothings ever just the wind' when talking abt the Singing Towers like... !!

Mission: Jingle Bells — VoicePlay music video
youtube
After the events of "Panic! in 4 Minutes" (and its prequel "Trapped" that they hadn't filmed yet), you might think the VoicePlay guys would be more vigilant against being abducted. But no, they've gotten kidnapped and tied to a circle of chairs again. At least this time their captor isn't actively trying to kill them. He just wants a private performance… or else.
Details:
title: Mission: Jingle Bells
original songs / performers: theme from Mission: Impossible; traditional American carol "Jingle Bells"; rap verse inspired by "Dopeness" by the Black Eyed Peas
written by: Mission: Impossible theme by Lalo Schifrin; "Jingle Bells" by James Lord Pierpont
arranged by: Layne Stein
release date: 21 December 2018
My favorite bits:
the group being awakened by Earl, Eli, and J.None singing in three part harmony
Geoff busting out that iconic bass line
the extra bindings securing Earl's beefy legs (and the gift bow on the end of his beard)
J.None singing those happy lyrics to the M:I minor key melody
the lovely bell chord for ♫ "laughing all the wa-a-ay" ♫
the increasing concern on Geoff's face as their captor puts him through his bassy paces
J figuring out a loophole by speaking to the beat
Layne's percussion under the rap switching from resonant wood block sounds to quick high hats to ramp up the tension
the cautious ♫ "Time… to… get… out" ♫ from Eli inspiring everyone to pull against their bonds
Earl hitting that sky-high ♫ "jingle BEEELLS" ♫
the syncopated harmonies from Eli and J
that crisp diction in the final chorus
"Someone's coming to untie us, right?" 😟
Trivia:
○ Like most of the spoken dialogue in VoicePlay's music videos, the kidnapper is voiced by Eli. The mystery person at the computer equipment is Kathy.
○ The guys have never released a conventional version of "Jingle Bells", but they have done serveral creative things with it:
They performed a fun remix as a commercial bumper during the Sing-Off season 4 finale.
They did a Bollywood-inspired version on their 2012 holiday album, "Peppermint Winter".
And, of course, they included an excerpt in their "Most of the Songs" holiday medley that they performed at seasonal shows, including their three annual residencies at Disney World for Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party.
○ VoicePlay later included the Mission: Impossible theme in their "Aca Top 10 – Movie Themes" countdown with guest Rob Lundquist from Home Free.
○ The fellas made some festive hostage-note-style promo posters that they posted to their individual social media accounts. (Though I can't find J.None's anywhere.)
○ This video was commissioned by Paramount Studios as part of the advertising campaign for the home media release of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, the sixth movie in the series.
○ Instead of a note in the YouTube description, they posted a comment reading: "MERRY CHRISTMAS! This video was sponsored by Mission: Impossible – Fallout — If you're looking for something INCREDIBLE to watch this holiday season with all of your fav secret agents, 😎 👉 http://paramnt.us/Get.Fallout. Today (This comment will self destruct in 5 seconds)."
○ The video won a 2019 Clio award, the industry awards for advertising. The coordinating agency, Think Jam Inc., took home a bronze in the Home Entertainment: Original Content category.
○ Earl got a little lost in the sauce when he picked up breakfast for the guys and their crew on the way to the filming location.

hi bestie i have QUESTIONS!! congrats on a great year for writing ❤️ and also a great year because i got to meet you ❤️
1. favorite fic you wrote this year
3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year
23. fics you wanted to write but didn’t
Howdy Rowan and thank you!! I'm so happy we met 🫂 You’re def a big reason I kept creating this year!
1. favorite fic you wrote this year This is tough but I think… and it’s peaceful in the deep. I’m proud of it because I planned it more than most fics I write lol, and I am really happy with the end result. I think a lot of times i kind of miss the mark with what I originally intended… I do like that because I like seeing what results and what people take away from it. But with this fic, I told the story I originally intended to tell, and I was really proud of that focus.
23. fics you wanted to write but didn’t I went trawling in the trenches for this lol, I forget a lot of ideas when I move on from them. I had a Mass Effect longfic I started that went through all the games, and I ended up doing the same thing as I did for DA, using it as a springboard… I think I also had some Bollywood fics I never finished, and two separate DA modern AU/romcom-type things that lost steam. (One was supposed to be an exchange fic inspired by Four Weddings and a Funeral, but I couldn't get it to work in time) I also had a western AU for DA that fizzled out, so that’s fun.
3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year From the care and feeding of lovebirds… I think I’ve posted this before, but I really like the vibes lol:
Simran puts a disc into the player—Madonna, The Cranberries, The Goo Goo Dolls, she’s squirreling them away with a little part of each paycheck.
Maybe once a week, she’ll put on one of her old tapes, something swing, or one of her father’s songs—she listens to them for only half a minute or so before she has to switch them off, and only when she’s alone, only when she can put the hurt away for later. She can never seem to hide these things from Raj. She only has one tape from her father, and it's been in the box long enough it's beginning to gather the lightest layer of dust.
Raj comes through the door just as the soft chords of “Linger” filter into the air, dripping water into the entryway. She can imagine him standing on the mat, beads of water on his coat catching the hallway light as he slips out of his shoes, and it’s all a poem: the rolling thunder underscoring the music, the fat drops rolling down the leaves and pouring from their waxy surfaces—
—right onto her face, and she opens her eyes to find Raj grinning down at her, his dimples on full display as a trickle of water disappears down her blouse.
“Chi—“ she scolds him as she pushes his head away, “I’ll have to clean all that up—“
“I’ll mop it,” he promises, folding one hand over hers where it still rests on his face. He presses his cheek to hers and she can smell his cologne, shivers at the cold dampness of his chest pressing into her back as she lets her eyes fall shut again.
“Come here,” she gently urges, tugging at his hand until he circles the sofa and sits next to her, and then until he lies down with her, both of them hopelessly wet now and bringing the upholstery down with them.
“How was it?”
“It was good,” she whispers, enjoying the soft puffs of his breath on her skin. “I liked the passage they picked.” She came home straight after the exam, the rain discouraging her from any larks to a cafe or the library.
“I was going to stop by the bakery on the way home, but this is an even sweeter surprise,” he says in a syrupy voice. She scoffs even while her chest flushes with warmth.
“Do you want me here waiting for you every day?” she teases.
“As nice as it would be to be greeted by the moon herself every night,” and he brushes a kiss across her cheek as she laughs, “Never. I’d never want to take you from school like that. From your life.”
“You’re my life, too.”
“Not like that,” he says, his voice so fond that she feels she could do anything right now and he’d not have a word against her. “Do you want to order in for dinner?” And he’s off to the latest banal concern, and she’ll never quite get used to how he sees the world, flipping through matters of such gravity and the smallest things like flicking on a switch.
“It’s not Friday.” Can we afford it, will we be good enough to cook Friday instead—
“We can swing it,” he says. “You like Indian?”
She tosses her pillow at his head.

Watch Legendary love story ghazal song Lafz Bheege Hain
Sufiscore celebrates an epic Indian love story, an ‘amour eternal’ on the new release Lafz Bheege Hain (“Words Drenched in Tears”). The album features lyrics from the esteemed contemporary poet, Ajay Sahaab with beautifully sung melodies from lead vocalist Pratibha Singh Baghel. The songs on Lafz Bheege Hain follow the story of unrequited love involving two eminent writers from India’s social justice-oriented Progressive Writers Movement, Punjabi Amrita Pritam (1919-2005) and Sahir Ludhianvi (1921-1980). Pritam, a novelist, essayist and poet, discusses her unrequited love for Ludhianvi, the poet and film lyricist, in her 1977 autobiography ‘Rasidi Ticket’ (a.k.a. The Revenue Stamp).
youtube
“There is a saying in India that if you want to express love, you resort to Urdu,” declares poet Ajay Sahaab. Sahaab drew on his lifelong passion for Urdu to evoke a familiar “tear-drenched” story that has almost acquired the status of a legend or folk tale.
Lafz Bheege Hain consists of five songs, modern in sound and conception, yet following the traditional form of the ghazal: a poem with rhyming couplets in prescribed patterns, usually sung in Urdu, the “love language” par excellence of the subcontinent. This great love story between Amrita Pritam and Sahir Ludhianvi has been depicted in literature and film — and in that spirit, director Parasher Baruah has created a sequence of videos to accompany all of the ghazals of Lafz Bheege Hain, featuring famed actors Prachi Desai and Som Chattopadhyay in the leading roles.
The emotions summoned by this love story”, says singer Pratibha Singh Baghel, “are held in common throughout the world. Those feelings of love and separation and sadness are the same everywhere. The poetry and compositions of Lafz Bheege Hain are for everybody who can relate to this.” Desai strikes a similarly universal chord: “I don’t know where we all find our strength, but after some of the biggest losses we ever have, we somehow make it through. It’s a hopeful message for anyone watching these videos or listening to this music.”
To capture these nuanced sentiments, composer Rajesh Singh drew upon what are known in Hindustani classical music as “evening ragas,” scales and tonalities associated with the time of day, he says, “when the solitude is very intense, and the melancholy and sadness comes throbbing upon us.” From these evening ragas come the beautiful melodies of Singh’s imagination. The rhythms are hypnotic; the lush, flowing chord progressions are informed by Western harmony but applied in such a way as to underline the ragas’ traditional character. “As a composer I had to find a correct mood and balanced sound to express the melancholy and divinity of pain portrayed in these ghazals,” adds Singh. “I observed that the pain of separation expressed by the poet here has no bitterness, and there is a subtle acceptance of separation due to social circumstances. Hence the notes had to be carefully woven not to sound depressing or negative.
Arranger and producer Paras Nath played a crucial role in bringing Singh’s compositions to life with rich and varied instrumentation and sonic character. “Because of Paras’ contribution,” says Pratibha Singh Baghel, “I was able to deliver the way that I did. So a lot of credit for this project goes to him.” Building upon Singh’s vision for each composition, Paras Nath reports trying “to enhance the feel of the ghazal. In every song I used something different.”
Cello, acoustic guitars, violin, viola and keyboards enter into the mix of Lafz Bheege Hain as well as Hindustani bansuri flute, the fretless sarod and the bowed sarangi. “Each instrument has its own character,” Paras Nath observes. “I didn’t want a loud arrangement, and I was careful not to overshadow the singing and the lyrics.”
Along with her extensive accomplishments in Indian musical theater and Bollywood playback singing, Pratibha Singh Baghel has devoted herself to the art of classical Hindustani music in a forward-looking, internationally minded modern vein. Lafz Bheege Hain is a vital part of that effort. To the poet Sahaab, the goal is to “revive the classicity of the ghazal,” bringing the traditional form into vibrant contact with Western elements before a worldwide audience. “In a very humble way but with energy,” says Sahaab, “we are trying to convey emotions so that modern generations can feel the intensity of words, music, poetry, composition and instruments.
“For me the songs on Lafz Bheege Hain are part of a single work of cinema,” says Parasher. “I wanted to narrate certain aspects of the story and portray universal themes of love and longing. I approached the cinematography with an idea of recreating the 1950s and ’60s, a personal homage to the heyday of Indian cinema when romance was celebrated in all its emotions, blending poetry with visual storytelling. Choosing to shoot in colonial Pondicherry and Mumbai, our choice of locations, production design and styling helped in this a lot.” For Prachi Desai, the alluring beauty of the audio tracks generated all the inspiration and excitement she needed: “When I first listened to Lafz Bheege Hain, time stopped,” she recalls. “I knew I had to be a part of this. I’m glad that this was my first ghazal ever.”

Sampling in Music and Barthes' Death of the Author
Barthes’ argument that the author is ultimately irrelevant in the greater scheme of their works is largely an ideal that resonates with me as I do agree that it should ultimately be left up to the reader to determine meaning within what they consume. One idea that stuck out to me in particular though was his ideals concerning no works being the culmination of truly original thought. All works draw some degree of influence from some earlier work so in Barthes's eyes that ultimately makes it useless to try and prescribe a particular ideal to just one author as that author must have been shaped by something they witnessed. This matter reminded me a lot of the art of sampling found within music and how interesting controversies are stirred up regarding originality due to how artists utilize samples.
Sampling involves the implementation of a pre-existing composition from a different recording within another recording for musical purposes. Sampling played an instrumental role in the creation of modern-day rap and hip-hop and continues to be used in other genres to this day. Despite the commonality of sampling it is still regarded through a controversial lens as it creates discussions surrounding copyright and ownership which is especially difficult to validate when it comes to music. A recent controversy over plagiarizing involved a lawsuit launched against the pop singer, Ed Sheeran, for allegedly ripping off Marvin Gaye’s “Let's Get It On”. The Gaye estate luckily lost the suit with the jury ruling that the songs just built off similar chord structures that predated Gaye’s classic. Another more iconic controversy surrounding sampling arose in the 90s with Vanilla Ice’s single “Ice Ice Baby” which sampled the bassline on Queen and David Bowie’s collaboration “Under Pressure”. Queen and Bowie were not provided writing credits on the track until they threatened to sue for copyright infringement, at which point they were promptly credited. In some way, this case was a landmark in how sampling would be applied to hip-hop records but others critiqued how it essentially forced Queen and Bowie to be a part of a collaboration they had no interest in.
In some way, I can see both sides of the argument for sampling and interpolating other songs, but I feel that instances such as that as mentioned prior are prime examples of the misconception that sampling is a lazy art. Of course, it would suck to have one’s ideas appropriated and refurbished for monetary value like the commercialization of memes discussed in the Sax reading, but as is mentioned there it is entirely up to the creativity of those reconditioning the work to make it of value. The reason things become annoying is when they become mainstream and novelty as observed in Chen’s hatred of most memes due to their oversaturation. People can tell when something is done artistically versus when it is done out of sheer laziness. The power derived from sampling is in its ability to use the context of a piece and apply it in a manner that either builds or grants an entirely different meaning to the work. One of the most iconic songs in hip-hop, Wu-Tang Clan's “Cash Rules Everything Around Me”, samples a 1960 love song titled “As Long as I’ve Got You” drawing a palpable comparison between the song’s theme of an over-dependence on money. Sampling also serves to bridge cultural gaps by introducing an entirely new musical perspective to a completely new demographic as can be seen in Britney Spears’ sampling of a Bollywood track in her most successful single, “Toxic”.
While ownership of intellectual property is an important matter, I think Barthes’ attitude toward the “anonymity” of art results in much more interesting and complex works.

Gana Banane Ka Tarika: Step-by-Step Guide for Aspiring Musicians
Creating music is an art form that requires creativity, passion, and the right tools. For aspiring musicians, understanding the process of gana banane ka tarika (how to create a song) is essential. This guide will take you through every step of making music, from composing lyrics to uploading your tracks to platforms like Spotify. Along the way, we’ll integrate key elements such as Spotify for Artists login, WAV format songs, song remix song, and Spotify videos on songs to give you a holistic view of music production and promotion.
1. Start with Inspiration
Every great song starts with inspiration. Think about the themes or emotions you want to convey. Is it love, heartbreak, joy, or empowerment? Identify your style and genre, whether it’s pop, rock, electronic, or Bollywood.
Once you have an idea, start jotting down your thoughts or lyrics. If writing lyrics feels challenging, consider using rhyming tools or analyzing popular songs to understand how they craft their verses. This foundational step is crucial in understanding gana banane ka tarika.
2. Compose the Melody
A strong melody is the backbone of any song. You can use instruments like a guitar or piano to experiment with chords. If you’re not proficient in instruments, digital audio workstations (DAWs) like FL Studio, Logic Pro, or Ableton Live offer built-in tools for creating melodies and beats.
For aspiring producers, understanding the importance of audio quality is critical. When creating and saving your music, always work in WAV format songs rather than compressed formats like MP3. WAV files retain their high-quality audio fidelity, which is essential for professional production.
3. Create the Beat and Arrangement
Once you’ve nailed your melody, it’s time to create a beat. Whether you’re making an original song or a song remix song, experimenting with drum patterns, basslines, and synths can help shape your track’s vibe. If you’re remixing, focus on reimagining the original song’s elements while maintaining its essence.
Remixing tools like Serato, Virtual DJ, or even the remix options in certain DAWs can assist in transforming an existing track into something uniquely yours. Remember, a successful remix often balances creativity and familiarity, so listeners can still connect with the original while enjoying your new interpretation.
4. Record Your Vocals
Once the instrumental is ready, it’s time to add vocals. Use a good-quality microphone to record clear and professional vocals. Before you record, warm up your voice with exercises to enhance clarity and range. Singing in a sound-treated environment will help avoid unwanted noise in your recordings.
Save your vocal recordings as WAV format songs to ensure no loss in quality. This will make the mixing and mastering process smoother later on.
5. Mix and Master Your Track
Mixing is the process of balancing all the elements of your song, such as vocals, instruments, and effects, to create a cohesive sound. Mastering, on the other hand, ensures your song sounds polished and consistent across all devices. Use plugins and tools like EQ, compressors, and reverbs to enhance your track.
If mixing and mastering feel overwhelming, there are online platforms like LANDR and CloudBounce that automate the process. These platforms allow you to upload WAV format songs for better results, maintaining the quality required for professional distribution.
6. Add Visual Elements: Spotify Videos on Songs
Visual elements are increasingly important in music promotion. Platforms like Spotify offer tools like Spotify Canvas, which lets artists add looping videos to their tracks. These Spotify videos on songs make your music more engaging and memorable for listeners.
When creating a video, keep it simple yet eye-catching. Focus on visuals that reflect your song’s mood. For instance, a high-energy track might feature fast-paced animations, while a mellow ballad could include calming visuals. These videos can be uploaded through your Spotify for Artists login.
7. Upload and Promote Your Song on Spotify
Now that your song is ready, it’s time to share it with the world. Spotify is one of the best platforms for showcasing your music. To upload your track, use services like DistroKid, TuneCore, or CD Baby, which distribute your song to Spotify and other streaming platforms.
After distribution, claim your profile through the Spotify for Artists login. This tool is invaluable for musicians as it provides access to analytics, playlist pitching, and profile customization. With Spotify for Artists, you can track your streams, audience demographics, and more, enabling you to strategize your promotions effectively.
8. Share and Market Your Music
Promotion is key to gaining an audience. Use social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube to share teasers, behind-the-scenes content, and performance clips. Collaborate with influencers or other artists to expand your reach.
For remixes, emphasize the uniqueness of your version by creating short, engaging clips. Highlighting your track’s visuals, such as Spotify videos on songs, can make your promotions stand out.
9. Explore Remix Opportunities
If you want to grow as a producer, consider creating remixes of popular songs. A well-done remix can attract attention and even land you on official playlists. Remember, every song remix song is a chance to showcase your creativity and skills.
10. Keep Improving and Experimenting
The journey of a musician doesn’t stop after one song. Keep experimenting with different styles, formats, and visuals. Learn from audience feedback and refine your craft. Whether you’re making an original composition, a song remix song, or exploring tools like Spotify videos on songs, staying consistent and innovative is key.
Conclusion
Creating music is a rewarding journey that combines creativity, technical skill, and strategic promotion. By following this step-by-step guide to gana banane ka tarika, you can turn your ideas into professional tracks ready for the world to hear. Remember to use high-quality WAV format songs, explore features like Spotify for Artists login, and integrate visual tools like Spotify videos on songs to enhance your music's appeal. With dedication and the right strategies, your music can find its way to listeners across the globe.

Bollywood has a long-standing tradition of adapting novels into films, bringing stories from the pages to the silver screen. While books offer depth, introspection, and a more personal experience, there have been instances where Bollywood movies outshined their literary counterparts. One such remarkable example is *3 Idiots*. This blog delves into such movies, exploring how Bollywood occasionally enhances or reimagines a story in ways that captivate audiences more effectively than the original books.
When Bollywood Outshines the Book
1. 3 Idiots (2009) - Adapted from Five Point Someone
The Book: Chetan Bhagat's *Five Point Someone: What Not to Do at IIT* delves into the lives of three friends struggling to cope with the pressures of the Indian education system. The book, while insightful, focuses on the day-to-day challenges faced by the characters.
Rajkumar Hirani’s *3 Idiots* takes the core narrative of the book but elevates it with humor, drama, and a powerful message about following one's passion. The film expands the characters, particularly turning Rancho (Aamir Khan) into a philosophical and inspiring figure. The movie's emotional depth and its critique of the rote-learning education system struck a chord with millions, making it a cultural phenomenon.
Reasons To Watch
· A more engaging and inspiring narrative.
· Universally relatable themes and emotional connect.
· Iconic dialogues and memorable performances.
When Bollywood Outshines the Book
2. Devdas (2002) - Adapted from Devdas
Saratchandra Chattopadhyay’s classic Bengali novel *Devdas* tells a tragic tale of love and loss. The story, while iconic, has a restrained narrative style.
The Movie
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s *Devdas* is a larger-than-life cinematic spectacle. Featuring opulent sets, stunning costumes, and powerful performances by Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit, the film redefined the story for modern audiences.
Reasons To Watch
· A visually grand interpretation of a classic tale.
· Bhansali’s artistic direction and emotional gravitas.
· Music and choreography that amplified the story’s emotional core.
When Bollywood Outshines the Book
3. Guide (1965) - Adapted from The Guide
R.K. Narayan’s *The Guide* is a nuanced tale about a tour guide’s journey from a conman to a spiritual leader. The novel is introspective and subtle in its storytelling.
The Movie
Vijay Anand’s cinematic adaptation starring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman gave the story a more dramatic and romantic twist. The film added a layer of complexity by exploring themes of love, redemption, and spirituality, along with unforgettable songs like *"Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai."*
Reasons To Watch
A compelling transformation of the protagonist.
Memorable music and emotionally charged sequences.
The dual-language (Hindi and English) release broadened its appeal.
When Bollywood Outshines the Book
4. Omkara (2006) Adapted from Othello
William Shakespeare’s *Othello* is a timeless tragedy of love, jealousy, and betrayal. While it’s a masterpiece of English literature, its Elizabethan setting may feel distant to contemporary audiences.
The Movie
Vishal Bhardwaj’s *Omkara* reimagines the story in a rural Indian setting, infusing it with raw intensity. The stellar performances by Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, and Kareena Kapoor brought Shakespeare's characters to life in a way that resonated deeply with Indian viewers.

How Technology is Shaping the Future of the Bollywood Music Industry
The Bollywood music industry, a cornerstone of Indian cinema, has witnessed dramatic shifts in the way music is created, distributed, and consumed. Technology has been a game-changer, driving innovation and altering the dynamics of music production and consumption. From artificial intelligence to digital streaming platforms, these advancements are reshaping the industry, offering both challenges and opportunities.
The Evolution of Music Production
One of the most significant areas where technology has impacted Bollywood music is in production. In the past, creating music involved live instruments and a significant number of musicians. Today, digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Logic Pro, FL Studio, and Ableton Live have transformed the way music is composed and arranged.
Producers now use virtual instruments and sound libraries to replicate orchestras, percussion, and other elements without requiring live recordings. This not only reduces costs but also allows for greater creative freedom. For instance, iconic Bollywood composers like A.R. Rahman have embraced these tools to experiment with unique sounds, blending traditional Indian music with global influences.
AI and Machine Learning in Music Composition
Artificial intelligence (AI) is gradually finding its place in the Bollywood music industry. AI-powered tools can now assist in composing melodies, generating lyrics, and even mixing tracks. Companies like Amper Music and AIVA are developing AI software that can create music tailored to specific moods or themes.
While this raises questions about the role of human creativity, it also provides an opportunity for composers to explore new possibilities. For example, AI can analyze trends in popular music and suggest chord progressions or beats that resonate with audiences. This helps music directors stay relevant in a competitive market.
Digital Streaming Platforms and Democratization of Music
The rise of digital streaming platforms like Spotify, JioSaavn, and Gaana has revolutionized the way Bollywood music is distributed. These platforms have made music more accessible than ever before, allowing listeners to discover new tracks instantly. They also offer artists a global platform, enabling Bollywood songs to reach international audiences.
Streaming platforms provide valuable insights through data analytics. Music producers can now analyze listener preferences, popular genres, and trending artists. This data-driven approach helps them make informed decisions about the type of music to produce, ensuring a higher likelihood of success.
Virtual Reality (VR) and Immersive Experiences
Virtual reality is making its way into the Bollywood music industry, offering fans immersive experiences. VR concerts and music videos allow audiences to engage with their favorite artists in a more interactive way. This technology gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic when physical events were limited, and virtual concerts became a viable alternative.
For example, imagine experiencing a live Bollywood concert from the comfort of your home, complete with 360-degree visuals and surround sound. This not only enhances the fan experience but also opens up new revenue streams for artists and event organizers.
Social Media and Viral Marketing
Social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube have become integral to the promotion of Bollywood music. Artists and production houses now use these platforms to tease new releases, share behind-the-scenes content, and interact with fans.
TikTok, in particular, has played a crucial role in popularizing Bollywood songs. Short videos featuring dance routines or lip-syncing to Bollywood tracks often go viral, boosting a song's popularity. This has created a new marketing strategy where music producers aim to create "TikTok-friendly" songs with catchy hooks and beats.
Blockchain and Music Ownership
Blockchain technology is emerging as a solution to longstanding issues in the Bollywood music industry, such as copyright infringement and fair royalty distribution. By using blockchain, artists and composers can securely register their work, ensuring they receive appropriate credit and compensation.
Smart contracts on blockchain platforms can automate royalty payments based on usage data from streaming platforms. This transparency benefits both creators and producers, fostering trust and encouraging creativity.
Challenges Posed by Technology
While technology offers numerous benefits, it also brings challenges. The ease of access to digital tools has led to an oversaturated market, making it harder for genuine talent to stand out. Moreover, the use of AI and virtual instruments can sometimes result in music that lacks the emotional depth of live performances.
Another challenge is the decline of physical album sales. While streaming platforms have increased accessibility, they often provide lower revenue per stream compared to traditional sales. This has forced artists and producers to rely on concerts, endorsements, and brand collaborations for financial stability.
The Future of Bollywood Music
The integration of technology in the Bollywood music industry is far from over. As advancements like 5G, augmented reality (AR), and the metaverse gain traction, the industry will continue to evolve. Artists may soon host virtual meet-and-greets in the metaverse, while AR can enhance music videos with interactive elements.
Moreover, AI could eventually take on more creative roles, such as composing full-length scores or even collaborating with human artists to produce hybrid compositions. While this may raise ethical and creative concerns, it also promises to expand the horizons of Bollywood music.
Conclusion
Technology has undeniably transformed the Bollywood music industry, making it more dynamic, accessible, and innovative. From AI-driven composition tools to VR concerts, these advancements are setting the stage for a new era in music. However, as the industry embraces these changes, it must also address the challenges they bring to ensure that creativity and authenticity remain at the heart of Bollywood music.
The future of Bollywood music lies in striking a balance between technological innovation and human artistry, ensuring that the magic of its melodies continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
