Also as a kid my dad used to show me all sort of weird European art films so Watership Down was pretty tame compared to films like these;
#first is jan svankmajer's alice#second two from the secret adventures of tom thumb by bolexbrother studio#both very good films#but also very weird and creepy#used to watch them all the time as a kid

The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb
The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb is an hour long stop motion film by Bolexbrothers and is about the short life of Tom Thumb in the surreal world that he lives in. In it you see many different environments such as a laboratory, a pub, a waste disposal area, and all of them are unique and colourful in their imaginative creation.
The story itself is quite unsettling mainly due to the fact that there is hardly any speech from the characters, but also because of the surrealness of the world that they live in; there are bugs everywhere, and the people of the world are very cruel, unkind, and particularly unhygienic.
Something else that adds a weird tone tot he film is the fact that a lot of the stop motion is done of real people as opposed to maquettes and puppets. The unsettling stuttering and jarring motions created by this is unique and offers another twisted tone to the film.
From this film though I did get an insight into another way I could do my own film (using real people as well as models) and also a view at how plentiful settings can be. But due to time restraints and not having enough time or money to build all the sets and costumes for people, I wouldn’t be able to work having real people in a stop motion film as well!
Plus I don’t think it would work with what I already have for this film.
