Guess what? Smut. Yep. I wrote smut. So...if you are uncomfortable with this kind of content, just ignore that post!
There will be slight bondage, very slight, use of dirty talk, some teasing and....yeah, enjoy. Hope it´s not too bad.
Time to face the consequences
Jschlatt loves his Husband, he really does. That doesn´t mean that he will forgive him for every possible action, especially not if his reputation and pride is on the line. Sometimes Quackitys actions awake the feeling in him, that his vice president doesn´t ever think about the consequences that there could be. He thinks he will never need to face them if he makes a guilty voice and tries to make it up to Schlatt….and most of the time, it helped. Today just wasn´t the day.
The first year of their presidency together was actually going very well and of course the ram hybrid would have the need for a long, powerful speech. To announce all their achievements and make sure to promise that this will not be the end and that they have plans for a great future. He practiced that speech for hours if not more but of course…nothing can go completely perfect.
The president stood in front of his tribune for speeches, looking as confident as always, catching everyones attention with his bold statements. Quackity was standing right next to him, he has his own tribune actually right next to Schlatts, they both decided that this would be fairer. Though, the duck hybrid wasn´t saying much now, looking at his husband with an adoring smile. He loved the way his partner spoke in those moments, such amount of confidence and charm, how he would gesture with his hands, this all created a self-confident aura. Quackity was sure that he could look forever and never get tired of his husbands voice but he had something way funnier in mind. Using the practical situation where everything slightly above the waist stays hidden behind the tribune. The shorter male would lazily run with his fingertips over his husbands hip, causing him to stop for a short moment but continue the speech. Schlatt would try to take a small step to the side, trying to keep the same attitude. He never stutters and this will definitely not happen today, in front of every Manberg citizen.
The duck hybrid had to hold back a proud smirk, watching the audience that looks mostly just at Schlatt, of course, how could his lamb not catch everyones attention? At first, he just tested the water, touching just with his fingertips, making sure that there is literally nowhere his lover could move to avoid his hands and that was his chance to get even more cheeky. He would gently stroke his husbands thighs, making him tense up and hold his breath for a moment, grabbing the tribune with one hand, so firm that his knuckles whitened. Schlatt had the urge to skip a few lines just so he could get away from this stage and probably strangle his husband. But he couldn´t. Not after getting that far and practicing for so long. As soon as Qs hand stopped on his hip, squeezing, the president gave him a glare that is worth the saying “if looks could kill”, still continuing the speech, his voice got lower, there was even a slight growl. Quackity swallowed as quiet as he could, this was strangely arousing, maybe because every single detail about this ram hybrid was that way but the vice president is sure, he will have to try and make his husband growl like this in a more private situation. Right now he only saw this as a challenge that he will not decline, changing the position of his hand, gently stroking the older hybrids tail, that was already wiggling like crazy, more because the presidents blood was boiling, but Quackity saw that as a clear way of telling how flustered his husband really was. The only reassurance that JSchlatt got was the fact that the speech is almost over, he really doesn´t know how much longer he could keep the straight look on his face and the proud smirk after each sentence that leaves his mouth. As soon as the young hybrids hand landed straight up on the presidents ass, he swore to himself that he will kill this duck hybrid. They will surely have some fried duck for dinner because those actions are unacceptable.
This is embarrassing and at the end of the speech, Schlatt felt like he was about to just combust on spot but instead, after all the loud applause, he grabbed his husbands hand and dragged him straight to their home, no time for the white house, he could do all that later. Quackity followed, not that he had a big choice, he knew that he will have bruises on his wrist from Schlatts grip but he also knew how sorry his husband will be for that. The duck hybrid just gulped, knowing that this will either go incredibly good for him or awfully bad.
It was getting just a little bit scarier because Schlatt wasn´t talking. It was okay when he yelled, that would mean that he is mad and would calm down fast…but when he is silent, well, this means that he is pissed. The door of their home was opened and slammed closed after they entered. The duck hybrid was almost tripping when they got up the stairs, just so they could enter the bedroom and Quackity was pushed onto the bed, looking now Schlatt directly in the face. His husbands cheeks were flushed more than ever, he was breathing heavily, and Q really wanted to hope that this is all just fluster but the doubt slowly crawled in the back of his mind.
-Are.you.out.of.your.mind?- there was a low growl in the older mans voice, he had the same glance and he was keeping his head lower, showing more of the sharper side of his horns, the tips, which is usually done for intimidation, so….yeah…Schlatt was probably not “just flustered”.
-H…heh, mi amor, common…. I was just messing around…I mean…..I didn´t even slap you, did I? Nobody saw anything…and…ahem…. g…great speech! I think you were very convincing….and…. you know, maybe we could just fuck that out? Like always…. - with each word the younger hybrid lowered his voice, slowly taking his clothes off. He doesn´t know why he does that so often, maybe because his wings then become more visible and he can show them off for intimidation, well….at least his instincts tell him to do so.
- “Just fuck that out”? Are ya…ah…ya know what? Sure. Yes. Lets do that. – this….didn´t sound too genuine but Quackity preferred to ignore that, throwing his clothes to the ground, while Schlatt only slowly untied his red tie.
-So..you are going to lie down or…- but the vice president didn´t even have the chance to finish.
-I don´t think so. Hands over your head, Quackity. You clearly used them enough for today. – any possible answer just stuck in the duck hybrids throat. He never thought about this so explicit before but Schlatts voice, whenever he gives any kind of orders, sounds so low and kind of fruity, he spoke as if they aren´t about to have sex but rather are planning a political negotiation. He slowly raised his arms above his head, watching his husbands actions. Schlatt stayed silent, slowly wrapping his tie around his lovers wrists, the fabric was usually nice to the touch but not when it´s tied together that tight. The action was repeated three times, his husband managed to wrap his tie three times around Quackitys wrists, after that the duck hybrid couldn´t separate his hands, about “unwrapping” there was not a single question, he will not be able to do it by himself. Quackity wanted to start talking, he already opened his mouth but couldn´t bring himself to say a single word. His mouth felt dry and he was glad that he wasn´t wearing any pants already, they would feel way too tight right now. The younger hybrid could only watch his lover, who was getting rid of his clothes slowly, teasingly slowly. The blaze got down and the president began to unbutton his dress shirt, one button after the other, opening a better view on his body, just for his husbands gaze. This was the first time that Quackity wanted to look away. He was sure that this is too much teasing for him, he can´t even start to jerk off and Schlatt clearly noticed how desperate his vice president got with every passing second…and that man just smirked. The duck hybrid now felt the heat on his cheeks, his own wings puffed up, giving away how overwhelmed he gets.
Finally, the sound of a belt being opened. It touched the floor and after that everything else was also put aside. The president silently stepped closer, running with his fingertips over the tip of his partners cock, already getting some of the precum smeared, making the younger hybrid whine.
-M…s..so, my guapito wants to ride me today? – Quackity wished he could say that with more confidence, his voice was shivering like a leave during the autumn breeze. Schlatt looked at him and smiled, so charming, so lovely, the Hispanic male believed that this is something that always makes him lose all his words. The ram hybrid made himself comfortable enough on Qs hips, not sitting down entirely, being aware of the weight that he would put on the fragile, avian body. He slowly grinded against his lovers dick, letting it slide between his ass cheeks, knowing that it will leave some precum there. After even such a little amount of teasing, his duckling was quietly moaning, slightly shivering and trying to move his hips at least a little bit.
-Ya know what? I actually think that…ya don´t deserve that.- the president said with the same smile, getting down from his husbands hips and going to the drawer, just to get the bottle of lube.
-W…what?- the younger hybrid was panting and trying to watch his partners every move.
-Ya heard me. Ya don´t deserve to fuck me today. Not getting that dick in my ass tonight. And you got only yourself to blame. – Quackity knew that right now, his partner tried not to blush or grin, he knew that this kind of “dirty talk” wasn´t something that turned Schlatt on. He knew that…but he knew also that his husband knew what kind of a turn on it was for Quackity himself.
-Oh…common baby girl…don´t be like that…it was just a little fun- the duck hybrid almost jumped out of his skin, when his husbands hand slipped between his legs, rubbing wet fingers against his rim. Nobody here was ever sparingly using lube, it´s better to get more than “not enough”.
-Well, ya will have even more fun now. What do ya think, will I be able to make you come from just my fingers? You seem to be horny enough for that. – the older hybrid smirked, slowly entering with just one finger, using more rotating motions, trying to stretch his beloved husband and spread the lube more. Quackitys knees were shaking, he never felt that eager from such a little amount of touches. As embarrassing at it is but Q really believed that in this scenario, just the fingers are already too much. It was harder to slip in the second finger but with a little push, both were in. Schlatt wasn´t trying to make it faster, he was teasing. Slowly separating his fingers, scissoring his partner, moving lazily, almost dragging the fingers out completely, leaving only the tips and then adding them back in. Trying different angles till he finally heard a much louder and high-pitched moan from his duckling.
-Mm…so here it feels good? Right? Wanna me to do it again? Want me to fuck you so badly that you are ready to scream from just my fingers? – it was hard for Schlatt to not break character in that moment, he always thought that this kind of sentences are ridiculous but, he knows that they turn his husband on, so…he is willing to try and keep himself together.
-Y…yes…por favour…fuck…j..just fuck me already…- Quackity felt like he was suffocating on his own words, shivering and trying to swallow saliva fast enough, not able to maintain a stable breathing. The ram hybrid just smirked again; his own cock was already hard, but he had the patience to wait till his husband wouldn´t be able to take it anymore.
The motions became faster, the president didn´t change the angle anymore, pressing with his fingers against the sensitive nerve bundle, causing his husband to moan loudly and squirm beneath him.
-Never saw your dick leaking that much, sugar- the older hybrid chuckled, adding a third finger, which was relatively easy this time. The avian didn´t even know anymore what he was doing, he tried to cross his legs but then spread them in the next second, tried to get away from the sensation that was getting too much, but at the same time he tried to get his partners fingers even deeper, moving with his hips towards his husband, hoping to feel even more. His wings were flapping, creating a sound of air slicing, he was greedy for touches, that’s for sure.
-M, my duckling wants to feel my dick? That’s what he wants? Just being stuffed full after showing so little respect, right? – finally, Schlatt started to give his own member attention, wrapping his hand around his own dick, giving it a few strokes, while only exhales slipped from his lips.
-Yes! Yes, please, mi amor…I…I will never do that again! Can…can I come? Please, I…I will come…touch me…please- it was a delightful sight and it was even more pleasant for the presidents ram ears. Unfortunate for Quackity, he had different plans, taking out his fingers all at once and earning a high-pitched whine.
-I think…I know something that is fairer…how about that. – he started his suggestion, lining his cock up with his husbands hole, leaking all that lube that was added.
-I could touch you….and let you come…if you say “I am sorry, Mr. President” fifty times…before I come. – he didn´t even wait for an answer, ramming his cock into his lovers hole, earning a moan worth any waiting. There was no need for a long paus or slow beginning, the ram hybrid used a rough start, grabbing his lovers hips, as tight as the duck did less than an hour ago. He flickered with his ears whenever he heard how Quackity forced himself to moan a shaky “I am sorry, Mr. President”, and having more and more troubles with every passing moment.
Schlatt wasn´t holding back, lifting his husbands lower part up, giving himself a better angle and speeding up, admiring how wonderful his duckling looks in that position. Hair a complete mess, sticking to his forehead because of the sweat, mouth didn´t close even for a second, either moaning or trying to force himself to say this cursed sentence, rolling his beautiful eyes and all of that just because of the older hybrid. The president himself wasn´t that loud, keeping his voice low, as if he would just whisper his own moans, feeling the pleasure of the warmth and the way his beloved tightens around him, making him want to release all his load inside already. The older hybrid looked down at his husbands cock, tip leaking precum that spread almost on all the length, it pulsated and Schlatt knew, his partner would need only one direct touch, one touch to gift him with sweet release, an explosion of pleasure but…Q didn´t earn it yet. He still was only at the fifteenth sentence, starting to just scream “I am sorry”, completely forgetting the second part.
The presidents movement became less rhythmic, he was speeding up just for the end, chasing his own pleasure, ignoring how desperate his husband cries for release. The only orgasm achieved in that moment was Schlatts own. He was balls deep in his lover, finally able to cum inside, feeling how his partner was squirming in his hands, hiccupping and grabbing air with his mouth, as if someone was about to steal it from him.
-P….please…S..so sorry, please…- the ram hybrid exhaled, looking at the crying mess in front of him, how could he not love someone like his husband? So sensitive and lovely. He was always giving all that he has, so, why wouldn´t the president let his heart melt a little bit. He gently placed his beloved fully on the bed and gently pulled out, not being too worried about the mess that will be on the sheets because of his own cum.
He decided that his husband deserves a good praise, maybe he didn´t fulfil the order but he tried. The older hybrid lied down, with his head next to his husbands hips, gently kissing his thighs and making a path of kiss right to his crotch. Schlatt didn´t want to torture the poor duck hybrid even more and wrapped his warm lips around the tip of his partners cock, gently moving with his tongue, not being too hesitant about swallowing the precum. Getting away as soon as the pulsation becomes too much and only licking the tip, which was enough, that was enough for Quackity to come with a loud cry. Some amount painted Schlatts cheek white but he didn´t mind. In that situation the duck hybrid regretted even more that he couldn´t move his hands, he would love to grab Schlatts horns and just make him deepthroat, he knows that he can do it and he knows how his husbands reacts whenever Quackity uses the horns to put him in a more submissive position. He knows that nobody else would be even allowed to touch them. He promises himself that as soon as his hands will be freed, this is the first thing that he will do.
Deep in his own thoughts, the vice president came back to reality only when he felt the touch of warm lips on his cheek and how Schlatt was stroking his dick again.
-M…what…missing the feeling of a dick?...- this time the duck hybrid chuckled, while his cock hardened once again. His own smile faded only when he saw Schlatts grin and in the next moment, the presidents just lies him down on his stomach.
-e….p…pumpkin spice, you are not still mad, right?...- the ram hybrid only laughed, starting to get dressed and leaving a strong slap on his husbands ass, which will definitely leave a red palm mark.
-I actually have some work to do. Fundy wanted to discuss something…so…ya could use the bed, ya know, grind a little bit- he was heading towards the door, while Quackity tried to untie the tie that was holding his hands together.
-Don´t you dare! I will murder you in your sleep! Do you hear me!? I will…fuck, te voy a destrozar el culo, ¡no vas a poder caminar ni sentarte en meses! B……baby girl! Don´t be like that! - Schlatts loud and confident footsteps became quieter and quieter.
-I forgot my Spanish book, sorry, can´t understand ya. Have fun, my sugar pumpkin- he said at the end with a proud smirk.

Flower Works - Tribune Newspaper
Around this time last year I was is in tiptoe anticipation to get my hands on a Tribune newspaper. I went everywhere in search of one and finally at a local Rubis gas station there they were stacked up. I paid the cashier for 2 copies and went and sat in my car turning the pages filled with excitement. Then boom, there it was. The excitement was so real when I realized that I didn’t have a small section feature or even a one (1) page write up but two (2) pages, full color feature!!!!! Pages 8 & 9 to be exact!! Can I tell you how I completely lost it!!! God is so faithful to his word and his promises!
Today as I reflect on the beginning of last years excitement, I want to share with you the interviewers questions and my responses in full. This way, those that would’ve missed it last year, can get the full read and get to know a little more about me and my business! Be blessed.
1. Can you provide an updated brief on your brand/ a little about yourself?
My name is Nydia Major; wife to my amazing husband Alessandro and a mother to two beautiful girls, Alyssa and A’Liya Major. I was born and raised on the island of Grand Bahama but I currently reside in Nassau Bahamas. Both of my parents had an eye for craft like work and in some way or the other inspired me to work with my hands. My dad worked as a jeweler and my mom owned two hat shops, one in Nassau and the other in Grand Bahama before her passing. I have both of them to thank for my artistic skills but mainly God above.
Ive had a passion for art ever since I was a child. I always looked up to my parents and older sibling who would always be seen either doing nails or drawing and painting pictures. I always tried to mimic what I saw them doing and eventually I began to find my own route. During my school years, classes that allowed me to use my creativity were the highlight of my younger years. Specifically my Computer Drafting and Design course under the tutelage of the amazing teacher Beverly Hinds. Mrs Hinds was a no nonsense teacher who didn’t allow her students to hand in just any quality of work but pushed us to produce the best work that we can and always stressed the importance of the creative fields in the work community.
Today I am the owner and lead crafter behind the business CRAFTED242 where we cater to a wide variety of handcrafted artwork. When I launched the business in 2018, I mainly catered to paper flower inspired crafts (eg. paper flowers, backdrops and paper flower selfie frames) hence the name Flower Works. Since then, I’ve decided to not limit what my craft business would offer because inspiration to create something new always presents itself. I pride myself on offering quality, unique work and excellent customer service. The company is currently solely online; however, shipping is available to family islands. Flower
Works has now become a special section under my business umbrella where I cater to creating all things centered around paper flowers and artificial flowers. Our flowers can be used to accessorize any room or event and make a bold statement. Crafting is my passion, thus I take pleasure in using my Crafted242 and FlowerWorks platforms to bring various visions to life.
2. What do you like most about being an artist entrepreneur, especially during a time like this?
I love the freedom that I have being an artist. The opportunity to create anything imaginable and bring customers ideas to life is liberating. Seeing the joy on customers faces when their visions come to life is unexplainable. Just the thought of knowing I was able to help in some way to make their special day or occasion stand out is simply amazing. Adapting during these tough times actually wasn’t hard at all. Being in lockdown with so many businesses closed, somehow pushed more persons to pull on small creative businesses to help celebrate occasions at home. There is a great demand now for customized unique pieces that you simply wouldn’t be able to grab at your local store. This is where I come in and use my gifts to match and or enhance the vision for each customer.
3. Where did you get the idea to start your Flower Works Designs? Or what was your inspiration/motivation to start?
When I found out I was expecting my fist daughter Alyssa, I began looking for ways to decorate her room. I saw a design online with paper flowers and thought to order some. Then I thought to myself, hmm I’m
sure I can make those myself. I searched some tutorials online and was able to create the flowers that I wanted. From there it was history.
4. What products/services are now offered under your brand of flower works? Where is the home base?
Flower Works is the paper flower section in my business CRAFTED242 where we offer a wide range of anything craft. Under Flower Works we offer a wide range of paper flower crafts in all different styles, sizes, colors and paper textures. We can emulate almost any flower design with paper. From roses to poinsettias to sunflowers, whatever the flower, we do what’s necessary to create it. My company is strictly home based in Nassau at this time, but I do offer shipping to the family islands.
5. What makes the pieces unique?
Each flower is delicately handcrafted one petal at a time. No two flowers ever come out looking exactly the same although the same love and attention goes into each one. These flowers are also unique in that they can accessorize almost any room and stand out. Once handled with care they can also be reused and sometimes refurbished. These flowers can be made very tiny to fit in the palm of your hand and also very large so large that they won’t fit in an average size car. There’s so much you can do with the flowers to help beautify spaces whether in a child's room, work space or at an event, these paper flowers provide lively color as timeless decor!
6. What is the creation process like for the pieces?
Creation time can take anywhere from 35minutes from start to finish for each flower. The amount of time depends on the size of the flower and the technicality in the flower detailing. The flower petals are usually drawn out free handed or from a template and cut out with scissors to start shaping. For mass flower production and more detailed flower petal cuts, sometimes we have to use a machine. Each petal is then carefully shaped and glued to a base that was a handmade, the hook is then attached for hanging purposes. Centerpieces can vary and require a lot of cutting and attention to detail. In most cases the centerpiece is usually the last piece added to the flower other than if there are special effects like painting or if the flower is being made freestanding which requires starting with the centerpiece and working your way to the outer petals.
7. What feedback do you usually receive from Bahamians regarding your work?
Bahmians typically like the crafted work however, a lot of persons, like myself prefer to go the route of creating them themselves instead of purchasing them. Sometimes I feel that the job itself - the time, effort and money, is underestimated, and by extension the product is undervalued. I’ve also had a lot of persons interested in taking lessons on how to create the flowers but not wanting to invest in the classes. A main feedback or concern is persons are skeptical about the flowers durability and reusability. These flowers are sure to outlast any real flower and if properly taken care of can hold up for a very longtime.
8. Who would you say is the biggest influence in your life and why? (please list names of person/ persons mentioned)
It is hard for me to really pinpoint any one person in my life who has had the most influence on me and where I am today. I can think of many family members, teachers, and friends who have all given me important pieces of advice or were great examples to me.
I would have to say the most influential person in a very intimate way was my mother Lydia Simmons Dames(deceased). My memories of my mother are those of a very strong, independent and hard working woman. She was a hardworking mother who very skillfully juggled two businesses, her family and other responsibilities. I never once heard her complain or breakdown despite having four children and a full schedule. I certainly would not be the person I am today without the influence of my mother. I can only aspire to imitate her work ethic and her refusal to be silenced by other peoples disapproval. Her tireless example is truly inspirational.
My Husband Alessandro Major and his family also plays a major role in my life. They support every single idea that I have and pushes me to become my best self. Sometimes I’d present new business ideas to them and doubt myself and they’ll see the vision and help me tweak and perfect it and support me in any way possible with seeing the vision to completion.
My Mum, Sheniqua Davis is an extremely important figure in my life and continues to leave a great impression on me. She’s a woman of great influence because of her stability and her work ethic. She’s such a strong determined God fearing woman. She encourages me to put God first in all that I do and challenges me to commit everything I do to prayer.
My Mum has taught me that hard times can be overcome once we put our full trust in God and trust His leading. She has taught me more than I could have learnt from any book. She sets an inspirational example to me teaching me how to live life and make wise choices, as a wife and mother and even in the most uncertain situations. One quotes says that “Behind every successful woman is a tribe of other successful women who have her back” and Ive been blessed with some amazing women who have been a large part of that force.
9. How does it make you feel to push a small business like this during a global pandemic?
Being able to push a creative small business thats in high demand during a pandemic is a great feeling. However, it does come with its challenges as I am currently working another full time job. Although a demand for the creative arts is now blooming, being a full-time wife, mother and employee encourages me to balance my time more effectively.
10. As a creative entrepreneur yourself, how are you keeping yourself encouraged, and have adapted your business to - a time that calls for social distancing?
Craft work is a passion of mine so as a creative entrepreneur I rarely have road blocks because there is always something new I want to try and make or that a customer will challenge me to create. I run to my work space and try my hand at new things almost every week. Somethings take longer to perfect but when I get it, I get it. Because there is really no limitation to what you can create as an artist, I am always finding new things to create whether for my home or for friends and family members.
Because my business is home based the social distancing doesn’t affect me much at all. When customers come to collect their items, we follow the safety protocols with mask wearing as their items to taken to their vehicles. The only real exchange is the payments and handing over the items.
11. What are your plans for Flower Works going into the new year, 2021?
I plan to put more emphasis on creating a wider variety of flower designs that will capture the eyes of my present and future customers. In doing so, I will be able to allow them to see how paper flower crafts can accessorize a room or space for any event. I also plan to post more of my work to my social media pages. During the pandemic, my eyes have been opened to how useful and powerful social media platforms can be when it comes to marketing and it is my goal to be able to take advantage of every opportunity to reach more persons with my handiwork.

Barrister Sami Rehman slams an exploiter suit — in SUPREME COURT!
It is now that we have started finding out what a good tool racial discrimination has become, for people of the darker races in order to exploit their fairer counterparts. In such context, we came across this case today, which had been escalated to the Supreme Court. Grounds? Racial discrimination by the employer! Valid? Not entirely!
In the case summaries, we read multiple times that the appellants have been escalating the cases, calling for racial discrimination and employer misconduct. However, the Supreme Court ruled ‘no discrimination based on racial grounds’ and that was enough to prove every claim unnecessary.
We can take into account the special treatment and services of Barrister Sami Rahman, who guided the respondents against an unfair trial that was going to rip them of a few thousand pounds at least, based on the inauthentic whims of immigrants looking to make some extra bucks. Courts are never made for that, are they?
The appellant that Barrister Sami Rahman was facing, had already taken up this matter in the employment tribunal and she was awarded £11,166.16 for unfair dismissal, including the failure to provide a statement of terms and condition; £43,541.06 for unpaid wages; £1,266.72 for unpaid holiday; and £25,000 for injury to feelings and £5,000 for aggravated damages.
However, the same case was rejected and put aside by Supreme Court. What does this tell us about the proceedings? The wicked way of the employees has left no stone unturned and are now exploiting the constitutions to milk their employers.
The sanctity of the Employment Tribunal has been recalled — thanks to the bold and unflinching stance of Barrister Raza Rahman, who singlehandedly recalled the sanctity and validity of the employment tribunals without being moved to emotions over the nicely crafted narratives of the appellants.
The case summary can be viewed at:

Former Georgia Bulldogs, NFL star aims to tackle $1.3M with Midtown condo
The big views upon entry at Unit 1603. | Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Georgia Properties
Seller Tim Jennings won a Super Bowl with the Indianapolis Colts and shined with the Chicago Bears
Former University of Georgia standout and National Football League veteran Tim Jennings is gunning for a touchdown, in terms of home-value appreciation, with a Midtown condo he's owned since the height of his playing days.
Jennings, an all-SEC star at UGA who later played in the NFL for a decade, has listed a three-bedroom, three-bathroom pad with views from Buckhead to Stone Mountain at the Aqua building.
Marketed as “high-rise living at its best,” the 16th-floor condo spans 2,835 square feet with perks that include motorized blinds, Viking appliances, a private elevator foyer, and a concierge.
Also included: custom closets, a few bold light fixtures, and an abundance of textured walls.
A statement entry with custom doors.
The condo listed this week with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Georgia Properties for $1.3 million even.
While so much space is nice indeed, it translates to a hefty HOA fee of $1,588 monthly.
Jennings won a Super Bowl with the Indianapolis Colts and later made two Pro Bowls with the Chicago Bears, leading the NFL in interceptions in 2012, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Records indicate Jennings scored the condo in question that same year—for just over $500,000.
The Aqua tower came online at the outset of the recession in 2007 and struggled to sell out for years. Jennings is the only recorded buyer for Unit 1603.
Over the years, celebrities such as Lil Wayne and CeeLo Green have lived the luxe penthouse life at the 24-story building on 10th Street. Kevin Hart also owns in the building.
Jennings’s Twitter profile pic appears to show him in the condo’s bedroom, surveying Midtown from so many floor-to-ceiling windows. The same vantage point frames a view of the rising, multi-tower 1105 West Peachtree project today.
The curved main living space.
Viking appliances in the triangular kitchen.
City views in the sprawling master bedroom.
Master bath.
A side space for shooting pool, positioned off the living room.
One of two secondary bathrooms, where something’s a little fishy.
Beyond the bedroom’s sliding doors is the east-facing balcony, looking toward Piedmont Park.

Is ‘the Internal Forum’ a Gambit to Change Church Teaching?
In his apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia (AL), as Pope Francis discusses the possibility of divorced, civilly remarried Catholics receiving Communion, he uses the term internal forum. In fact, he uses it only once as he describes a pastoral approach to such situations: “Conversation with the priest, in the internal forum, contributes to the formation of a correct judgment on what hinders the possibility of a fuller participation in the life of the Church and on what steps can foster it and make it grow” (AL 300).
The term internal forum as used here refers to the private judgment a person has regarding his own moral life. It involves the formation and consultation of his conscience and, as the pope indicates, may also involve the personal guidance of a spiritual director and/or a confessor. As such, it is a good and necessary part of one’s spiritual life.
Internal forum vs. internal forum solution
Many years ago there was a movement of sorts in the Church to allow reliance on the internal forum alone when determining whether or not one’s prior marriage was valid. If, in the internal forum, a person determined that his prior marriage was null, then he could consider his subsequent marriage valid. As such, his civil remarriage could be seen as not a sinful situation that precluded his participation in the sacraments of penance and the Eucharist.
This became known as the “internal forum solution.” The difficulty surrounding Pope Francis’s use of the term “internal forum” in his apostolic exhortation seems to be whether or not he intended to promote such an “internal forum solution.”
The bishops of Malta seem to think he did. This month they issued a document titled Criteria for the Application of Chapter VIII of Amoris Laetitia. In it, sometimes drawing from the text of Amoris Laetitia, they state:
If, as a result of the process of discernment, undertaken with humility, discretion and love for the Church and her teaching, in a sincere search for God’s will and a desire to make a more perfect response to it, a separated or divorced person who is living in a new relationship manages, with an informed and enlightened conscience, to acknowledge and believe that he or she are at peace with God, he or she cannot be precluded from participating in the sacraments of reconciliation and the Eucharist (10).
Such an approach seems to rely on the internal forum alone to determine whether or not a prior marriage was valid. Prior to making this bold statement, the bishops do say, “If during the discernment process with these people, a reasonable doubt arises concerning the validity or consummation of their canonical marriage, we should propose that these people make a request for a declaration of the nullity or dissolution of their marriage bond” (4).
A request for a declaration of the nullity or dissolution of a marriage bond entails the external forum, but the ordinary recourse to such a process is merely to be proposed, according to the bishops. In closing their document, the bishops pray “that through her priests, the Church in Malta and Gozo can indeed be a messenger that helps today’s Christians to be open to God’s voice in their conscience and, thereby, see the new path opening before them, leading from darkness to light.”
Clearly, the conscience is to reign supreme. Is this how Pope Francis intended the message of his apostolic exhortation to be applied? I don’t think so.
Evidence to the contrary
Pope Francis prefaces his comment about the internal forum by stating, “Neither the synod nor this exhortation could be expected to provide a new set of general rules, canonical in nature and applicable to all cases” (AL 300). In other words, he does not intend to change the laws of the Church. And, as we will see, the Church has explicitly condemned recourse to the “internal forum solution” multiple times in recent decades.
Pope John Paul II took up this issue in his 1981 apostolic exhortation Familiaris Consortio. He stated, “The Church, which was set up to lead to salvation all people and especially the baptized, cannot abandon to their own devices those who have been previously bound by sacramental marriage and who have attempted a second marriage” (84). In other words, the external forum is a necessary service of the Church in such situations; the internal forum is simply not sufficient.
Indeed, Pope John Paul II went on to indicate that even if a person does determine in the internal forum that his prior marriage was null, such a determination does not provide sufficient certainty for him to morally receive the Eucharist:
[T]here are those who have entered into a second union for the sake of the children's upbringing, and who are sometimes subjectively certain in conscience that their previous and irreparably destroyed marriage had never been valid.
However, the Church reaffirms her practice, which is based upon Sacred Scripture, of not admitting to Eucharistic Communion divorced persons who have remarried. They are unable to be admitted thereto from the fact that their state and condition of life objectively contradict that union of love between Christ and the Church which is signified and effected by the Eucharist. (84)
Pope Benedict XVI addressed the internal forum solution even more explicitly when, as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, he was prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. In 1994 he issued the letter Concerning the Reception of Holy Communion by the Divorced and Remarried Members of the Faithful. In it he explained:
The mistaken conviction of a divorced-and-remarried person that he may receive Holy Communion normally presupposes that personal conscience is considered in the final analysis to be able, on the basis of one's own convictions, to come to a decision about the existence or absence of a previous marriage and the value of the new union. However, such a position is inadmissible. Marriage, in fact, both because it is the image of the spousal relationship between Christ and his church as well as the fundamental core and an important factor in the life of civil society, is essentially a public reality (7).
It is certainly true that a judgment about one’s own dispositions for the reception of Holy Communion must be made by a properly formed moral conscience. But it is equally true that the consent that is the foundation of marriage is not simply a private decision since it creates a specifically ecclesial and social situation for the spouses, both individually and as a couple. Thus the judgment of conscience of one’s own marital situation does not regard only the immediate relationship between man and God, as if one could prescind from the church’s mediation that also includes canonical laws binding in conscience. Not to recognize this essential aspect would mean in fact to deny that marriage is a reality of the church, that is to say, a sacrament (8).
He went on to reference Familiaris Consortio and state that, concerning the determination of the nullity of a prior marriage, “It must be discerned with certainty by means of the external forum established by the church whether there is objectively such a nullity of marriage” (10).
Additionally, in 2005, the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts issued Dignitas Connubii, an instructional document for marriage tribunals that hear annulment cases. At its presentation, Cardinal Julian Herranz, president of the council, explained why the external forum is necessary for an annulment and said, "This instruction confirms the need to submit the question of the validity or nullity of a marriage of the faithful to a truly judicial trial.”
A hermeneutic of continuity
Given the clearly stated position of the Church on this issue, as well as Pope Francis’s own conviction that Amoris Laetitia is not intended to change the rules, it seems only fair to conclude that the internal forum solution remains condemned in the mind of the Church. Pope Francis does mention the internal forum because it is a necessary part of every Catholic’s spiritual formation, but he does not propose that it is sufficient of itself to provide a “solution” to the question of the validity or nullity of a prior marriage.

Brewing My Religion: 13 American Breweries in Former Churches
“There’s nothing in the Bible that says you can’t drink alcohol in a responsible manner,” Chris VanHall, Greater Purpose Community Church pastor, as well as its future brewer, said in August 2018. The Santa Cruz, Calif., house of worship plans to open a brewery in summer 2019.
Historically, churches were often among a city or town’s soundest structures. Now, out-of-service houses of worship are proving to be ideal spaces for new brewing businesses. At least 10 former churches were converted to breweries between 2011 and 2017, with several more in planning, AP reported.
Today, more than a dozen breweries housed in former churches dot the U.S., breathing new life into once-defunct spaces. Here are 13 breweries in former churches.
3rd Turn Brewing
Louisville, Ky.
Credit: 3rd Turn Brewing / facebook.com
Housed in an 1878 restored church, 3rd Turn Brewing rotates its beers weekly. At press time, its draft list features a thorough selection of traditional European styles, including German-style gose, Berliner weisse, and hefeweizen, along with American red, brown, and pale ales.
Back Pew Brewing
Porter, Texas
Located in the appropriately named town of Porter, about 30 miles north of Houston, Back Pew embraces its dark side, seeking “inspiration from sources strange and fantastic … with creative characters and daring twists,” the company statement says. The self-described “misfits” brew light-bodied beers (“Saints”) along with those that are “dark, bold, and brazen” (“Sinners”). These include Black Habit Schwarzbier, Sweet Salvation Brown Ale, and 9th Circle Black IPA.
Beer Church Brewing
New Buffalo, Mich.

Opened in the former Water’s Edge United Methodist Church in 2017, Beer Church embraces its environs. Taps are built into a wood altar where patrons and former parishioners recall being baptized. Rev. Brad Bartelmay, the church’s former pastor, “is one of our biggest supporters,” Beer Church co-founder Jane Simon told the Chicago Tribune in 2017. In addition to beers like Pontius Pilate IPA and Crooked Cross Cream Ale, Beer Church offers Neapolitan-style pizzas and other pub fare. In 2018, it unveiled the Beer Church Garden, which you can preview in this neat drone video.
Breaker Brewing Co.
Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
In 2013, Breaker Brewing opened its doors in the former St. Joseph’s Monastery & School. The brewery has since had several upgrades, including obtaining its brewpub license in 2014, adding a dining area and bar in 2016, and building a new 15-barrel brewing system in 2017. There’s also an outdoor dog-friendly patio.
Brewery Vivant
Grand Rapids, Mich.

At Brewery Vivant in Grand Rapids, Mich., brewpub visitors can order a pint at what was once the altar of this former funeral chapel. Opened in 2010, the brewpub is inspired by the small breweries of southern Belgium and northern France, celebrating the “bon vivant” with European-style “Michigan farmhouse ales” and a scratch kitchen serving rich countryside dishes like duck confit and chef-selected charcuterie. Brewery Vivant is also the world’s first LEED-certified microbrewery.

Castle Church Brewing takes the cake in churches-turned-breweries because it actually operates as both. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America welcomes all with a 20-barrel brewhouse with food and games Monday through Sunday, and offers Sunday worship.
The Church Brew Works
Pittsburgh, Pa.

Ask a beer lover about Pittsburgh, and chances are they’ve been to the Church Brew Works, where pillars surround a brewhouse altar, and diners and drinkers praise rich dishes like spinach, feta, and smoked Gouda dip; Kobe beef and mushroom cheesesteaks; and bison bolognese. Brews include Great American Beer Festival award winners like Celestial Gold and Pious Monk Dunkel.
Father John’s Microbrewery
Bryan, Ohio
Owner John Trippy is not a priest, he’s a former oral surgeon, but he did restore this former Methodist church in Bryan, Ohio in 2013. It is now a brewery, restaurant, and event venue, and its outdoor beer garden is described by CraftBeer.com writer Heather Galanty as “peaceful.” Trippy gets points for being totally goth, too: In the “crypt room,” diners can peer down at a coffin encased under glass in the floor below, a relic uncovered during renovations.

With dozens of hotel, pub, and restaurant locations throughout Oregon and Washington, McMenamins runs a variety of cool businesses in restored spaces. Its Old Church & Pub brewery in Wilsonville occupies a renovated 1911 church. Wood floors, high ceilings, stained glass, and “unusual artwork” grace the inside space, while an outdoor amphitheater provides live music and events.
Salt Springs Brewery
Saline, Mich.

Many Saline residents and visitors are drawn by the region’s salt springs, but the chemistry-loving Salt Springs Brewery, built in a nearly 190-year-old former church, offers a different kind of liquid. Beer, cider, and wine are all on the menu, alongside a food menu featuring local ingredients. Traditional “true-to-style” ales and lagers (Kölsch, hefeweizen) are made with locally malted grains and Michigan hops.
St. Joseph Brewery & Public House
Indianapolis, Ind.

Built in 1879, St. Joseph Church has undergone several iterations. It functioned as a house of worship until 1949 when, due to competition from other congregations, it held its last mass. Then, it served as a Catholic community center and meeting hall until 1954. It became a brewery in 2015. Today the brewery and restaurant offer beers with names like Confessional IPA, Dark Angel Black Lager, and Testament Tripel. It also serves wine by the glass and bottle, and classic cocktails from a full bar.
Taft’s Ale House
Cincinnati, Ohio

Although named, and themed, after the burly, bathtub-loving 27th U.S. President, Taft’s Ale House is housed in what was once the oldest Protestant parish in Cincinnati, St. Paul’s Evangelical Church. Built in 1850, the stunning 49,000-square-foot space was also once home to the Cincinnati Car Company Factory. BeerAdvocate named Taft’s one of the best new breweries in 2015.
Urban Artifact
Cincinnati, Ohio

Another Cincinnati church-turned-brewery established in 2015, Urban Artifact occupies the lower level of the historic St. Patrick’s church in Cincinnati’s Northside. The brewery, bar, and music venue has capacity for several hundred drinkers, including a courtyard where patrons can sip tart fruit beers outside. The Gadget, a “Midwest fruit tart ale” made with blackberries, raspberries, and vanilla beans, and Keypunch, a gose with Key lime zest and juice, are among the current favorites.

A close tally of Democratic House candidates who have said they won’t support House minority leader Nancy Pelosi indicates Democrats would either have to win by a huge margin in order for her to hang onto her top leadership post in 2019 — or those newly elected representatives would have to go back on a key campaign promise during their first vote in office.
Pelosi has already said she will run for speaker if Democrats win in 2018. But her path to victory in such a scenario is looking very narrow.
Vox has counted 23 candidates who have publicly said they will not support Pelosi for speaker should Democrats retake the House in 2018. Of those, 17 candidates are on the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s Red to Blue list, the list of Republican-held districts Democrats consider competitive. Red to Blue is the closest the DCCC comes to endorsing a candidate; those candidates get extra resources to help in their races.
Pelosi faced a leadership challenge from Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) in 2016. Although she won, 63 House Democrats voted for Ryan, a third of the caucus. With Dems still grumbling about how the caucus is run and the impending exit of House Democratic Caucus Chair Joe Crowley (widely considered a Pelosi successor), there are plenty of whispers about who could be next — whispers that Pelosi’s team is shrugging off.
“Leader Pelosi enjoys the overwhelming support of House Democrats and that will continue into the majority she’s so focused on winning,” said Pelosi spokesperson Drew Hammill in a statement to Vox.
Publicly distancing oneself from Pelosi (while continuing to accept money she’s fundraised) is proving to be a politically prudent — and winning — strategy for candidates. It may have helped propel now-Rep. Conor Lamb to a surprise victory in a deeply red Pennsylvania district that Democrats had believed was out of reach.
Red to blue candidates are all trying to win in moderate or red-leaning districts, so it may not be surprising that more are leaning into this tactic. But it’s notable that the number has grown so much. It’s true that some are veiling their opposition in calls for “new leadership in both parties,” but with Pelosi as the best-known Democrat currently in leadership, it’s hard to miss who they’re talking about.
At least publicly, Pelosi does not seem to be worried. She’s made it clear she wants Democrats to win at any cost, even if that means they’re publicly campaigning against her. Pelosi, a prolific fundraiser, has already raised nearly $70 million this election cycle, breaking her own previous record.
Here are the Red to Blue list candidates who have said they won’t support Pelosi.
Clarke Tucker, Arkansas’s Second Congressional District
“I’ve said from day one that I won’t vote for Nancy Pelosi” —campaign ad

Gil Cisneros, California’s 39th Congressional District
“No. While I respect Representative Pelosi’s years of advocacy on behalf of California and the Democratic party, new leadership is needed.” —statement to Politico
Brendan Kelly, Illinois’s 12th Congressional District
“I think we need new leadership in both parties and that’s just how I feel.” —interview with the Southern Illinoisan
Paul Davis, Kansas’s Second Congressional District
“This is a broken Congress right now, and I think the leaders of both political parties bear responsibility for that. And I think that we need new leadership in both political parties.” — interview with USA Today.
Jared Golden, Maine’s Second Congressional District
Golden “has no intention of voting for Nancy Pelosi. None at all.” —at a Maine voter forum, reported by the Lewiston Sun-Journal
Elissa Slotkin, Michigan’s Eighth Congressional District
“I always believe in being respectful to leaders, particularly women who have broken [glass] ceilings. But I think it’s clear that on both sides of the aisle, people are seeking new leadership, and I’m going to be looking for someone who best represents my district and what we care about here. And I believe that’s a new generation of leaders.” —interview with the Washington Post
Dan McCready, North Carolina’s Ninth Congressional District
“I’ve said since day one that I wouldn’t vote for Nancy Pelosi as speaker. I think we need a whole new generation of people in D.C. That’s part of why I’m running; we need some new blood.” —interview with the Washington Post
Kathy Manning, North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District
“I cannot vote for more of the same, and I cannot support Nancy Pelosi or Paul Ryan to lead Congress. We need fresh faces and bold ideas leading both parties.” —Medium post
Jeff Van Drew, New Jersey’s Second Congressional District
“I would not say that I would support her. It would be something that I think we need to look at, and it very well could be that we look at new Democratic leadership and voices.” —statement to Politico
Mikie Sherrill, New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District
“I’m glad to see that Paul Ryan decided not to run for reelection, but in the Democratic party, we have to look at ourselves as well. I won’t be supporting Nancy Pelosi for leadership either, because we know that the next 50 years aren’t going to look like the last 50 years, and we need a new generation of leaders who are going to bring forward fresh ideas as to how we move this country forward.” —interview with the New Jersey Globe
Max Rose, New York’s 11th Congressional District
“Throughout my campaign, I have spoken about how people in my district have lost trust in our political process and in both parties. If the Democratic Party is going to earn back the trust of the American people then we need to show them that we are serious about changing our politics — and that means we need a change in leadership.” —statement to Politico
Anthony Brindisi, New York’s 22nd Congressional District
“It’s something that I decided early on by talking to voters in the district. I believe it’s time for new leadership on both sides of the aisle.“ —interview with the Post Standard/Syracuse.com
Ken Harbaugh, Ohio’s Seventh Congressional District
“I would not support her. Unless we right the ship and realize that politics as usual is part of the problem, we’re going to keep losing.” —interview with the Wall Street Journal
Ben McAdams, Utah’s Fourth Congressional District
“It’s time for new leadership. I’d be looking at who’s running and what they bring to the table.” —interview with the Salt Lake Tribune
Abigail Spanberger, Virginia’s Seventh Congressional District
Spanberger praised Pelosi but said she’d “very much like to vote for someone else.” —interview with RealClearPolitics
Dan Kohl, Wisconsin’s Sixth Congressional District
“If I’m elected to Congress, I would not vote for Nancy Pelosi as leader of the Democrats.” —interview with Fox 6
Richard Ojeda, West Virginia’s Third Congressional District
“Nancy Pelosi is an absolute train wreck for the Democratic Party and for working-class families.” —Ojeda quoted in an op-ed in the Hill. He also told the Atlantic’s Russell Berman he wouldn’t support Pelosi.
And here’s a list of the candidates not on the Red to Blue list who have also publicly opposed Pelosi’s bid for speaker.
Andrew Janz, California’s 22nd Congressional District
“I’m not supporting Nancy Pelosi.” —NBC News interview
David Kim, Georgia’s Seventh Congressional District
“When you are not winning, you need to change the coach, change the team members or both. You can’t keep doing the same thing and expect different results.” —interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution
JD Scholten, Iowa’s Fourth Congressional District
“Democrats hate trickle-down economics; they should hate trickle-down politics.” Scholten added he would not support Pelosi in leadership. —Interview with Slate
Janet Garrett, Ohio’s Fourth Congressional District
“I look at the leadership — I think we should vote them all out. Nancy Pelosi — vote em all out.” —interview with Vox’s Tara Golshan.
Theresa Gasper, Ohio’s 10th Congressional District
“Although this discussion is premature, I would support new leadership in the House.” —statement to the Dayton Daily News
Danny O’Connor, Ohio’s 12th Congressional District
“We need new leadership on the Democratic side of things too.” —campaign ad

Key takeaways as Democrats get a midterm shock
Progressive challenger Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez celebrartes with supporters at a victory party in the Bronx after upsetting incumbent Democratic Representative Joseph Crowly on June 26, 2018 in New York City. Tuesday’s primaries showed even top party leaders can’t take support from their home turf for granted, and while it helps to have President Donald Trump on your side if you’re running as a Republican, having a record of bucking him isn’t fatal. Elections were held Tuesday in Colorado, Maryland, New York, Oklahoma and Utah, and runoff elections picked nominees in Mississippi and South Carolina. Here are the key takeaways:
Nobody’s safe
She raised $300,000 to her opponent’s $3.3 million, but it was enough for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s first run for office in a New York City district covering parts of Queens and the Bronx to defeat 10-term Rep. Joe Crowley and send shock waves through the House Democratic caucus.
President Trump crowed about the loss by Crowley, a sometimes bombastic critic of the president who was seen as angling to replace California Rep. Nancy Pelosi as the Democrats’ leader in the next Congress.
Trump said on Twitter that maybe Crowley would have won if he had been “nicer, and more respectful, to his President.”
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is embraced at the Tornillo-Guadalupe port of entry gate on June 24, 2018, in Tornillo, Texas, where she was protesting the separation of children from their parents after they were caught entering the U.S. under the administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy. (Photo: Joe Raedle, Getty Images)
The Bronx-born Ocasio-Cortez, 28, was the first primary challenger Crowley had faced in 14 years. Her win comes as Democratic primaries around the country have seen scraps between the party’s progressive wing and the Washington establishment.
“We meet a machine with a movement, and that is what we have done today,” Ocasio-Cortez said Tuesday night, according to The Associated Press. “Working-class Americans want a clear champion and there is nothing radical about moral clarity in 2018.”
Ezra Levin, co-executive director of the Indivisible Project that supported Ocasio-Cortez, compared her win to the 2010 primary in which House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., was beaten by David Brat, a challenger propelled by the tea party movement.
“A new political era is dawning — and the rusting and reluctant political establishment will wake up or be woken,” Levin said.
Pelosi said Crowley brought “principled, unifiying and forward-looking leadership” to the party’s response to Trump and said the caucus “has been strengthened by his chairmanship.”
Trump effect continues
Trump made it clear to supporters when he flew through a thunderstorm Monday night to lead a rally for Gov. Henry McMaster that if the governor was not nominated for another term, the “fake news” would take it out on Trump. South Carolina came through for the president, giving McMaster a win in a runoff against businessman John Warren.
Trump also endorsed New York Rep. Dan Donovan, who won his primary on Tuesday by defeating former Rep. Michael Grimm, who resigned in 2015 before pleading guilty to tax fraud and serving seven months in prison.
McMaster — whose support for Trump goes back to January 2016 — was in a runoff because in the June 5 primary he came up 8 points short of garnering the 50 percent-plus-one votes he needed to secure the nomination outright. Warren finished the primary with 28 percent and then was endorsed by two other candidates who had split most of the rest of the anti-McMaster vote.

With 97 percent of the vote in, unofficial results showed McMaster leading 53 percent to 47 percent.
In that same June 5 primary, South Carolina Republican Rep. Mark Sanford, a former governor who had been critical of Trump, lost by 4 percentage points after a last-minute Tweet from Trump endorsed his opponent and said Sanford “has been very unhelpful to me” and “nothing but trouble.”
Warren told voters he was more like Trump than McMaster, arguing that like the president he was “anti-establishment” and “anti-politician.”
Trump won South Carolina by 14 points in 2016 and endorsed McMaster back in October. Since the primary, the administration has doubled down on its efforts, with Vice President Mike Pence campaigning there on Saturday and Trump holding a rally Monday night. The president also sent out another tweet on Tuesday telling voters McMaster “WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”
It was great being with Governor Henry McMaster last night in South Carolina. Henry is tough on Crime and Borders, loves our Military and our Vets and has created many jobs and a great economy. GO OUT AND VOTE FOR HENRY TODAY, HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 26, 2018
Trump has had a mixed record in the primaries and special elections since he took office. He was embarrassed when Republicans in Alabama did not nominate the appointed senator he was backing, Luther Strange, setting up a race in which Democrat Doug Jones defeated Republican Roy Moore. But Trump also traveled to West Virginia to appear with two candidates vying for the Senate nomination against a third he opposed, Don Blankenship, and Blankenship lost that race.
GOP is having an identity battle
While Crowley’s loss was another sign of Democratic battles with their left wing, Republicans have similar conflicts with groups on the right.
The Club for Growth, a low-tax small-government group that frequently spars with House and Senate leaders, was spending money in primaries attacking candidates who were being attacked themselves by the Congressional Leadership Alliance, a “dark money” group that the Club for Growth says is tied to Speaker Paul Ryan and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
One example was the 4th District in South Carolina, where Rep. Trey Gowdy is retiring. The Club for Growth backed former state Sen. Lee Bright, so it spent more than $418,000 against his opponent, state Sen. William Timmons. CLF, meanwhile, spent more than $345,000 against Bright.
At a candidate forum hosted by The Greenville News, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, Timmons warned that if Bright were elected, “he is going to be on the front page of papers all over this planet.
“Businesses are not going to come here,” Timmons said. “He is going to say things that y’all do not agree with. He is going to say things that embarrass you, and it is going to cause problems for the Upstate.”

Can Democrats mend fences?
Numerous Democratic primaries for House seats, some in districts where the party believes the Republican incumbent is vulnerable in November, saw campaigns where liberal groups and the party’s establishment backed opposing candidates.
There were wins for both sides on Tuesday. The big question they face going forward is whether they can unite after the primary.
In Colorado’s 6th District, Democrats have their sights on Republican Rep. Mike Coffman, who won in 2016 even as Hillary Clinton won by 9 percentage points in the district. He’ll face Iraq veteran Jason Crow, whose support from Washington leaders became a rallying cry for the left after an opponent, Levi Tillemann, released a secret recording he made of House Minority Leader Steny Hoyer asking him to get out of the race.
But the forces on the left had a victory in New York’s 24th, where Republican Rep. John Katko won two years ago even as Clinton beat Trump by 4 points. Syracuse University professor Dana Balter was the candidate backed by progressive groups and local party leaders and won the primary against Juanita Perez Williams, who was getting help from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Pointing to Balter’s win and Ocasio-Cortez’s defeat of Crowley, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee issued a statement saying New York’s elections showed there is a “battle for the heart and soul of the Democratic Party.”
“The best way to excite voters is to run bold, progressive, younger, more diverse candidates who connect with their constituents — not old school candidates running establishment campaigns or who are fueled by corporate money,” the PCCC said.

Crossing Trump not always fatal
Elections on Tuesday also showed that criticizing Trump or opposing his policies is not always fatal in Republican primaries.
Larry Hogan, the Republican governor of heavily Democratic Maryland charted a careful course with Trump, speaking out against him at times, most recently when he pulled back state National Guard personnel to protest the “no tolerance” policy at the border that led to the separation of thousands of migrant children from their families.
Despite that, Hogan was nominated without a primary challenger Tuesday.
And Mitt Romney, the 2012 presidential nominee, was nominated for U.S. Senate in Utah despite being a leading voice of the “never Trump” effort in the GOP in June 2016 and saying Trump “caused racists to rejoice” by saying there was blame “on both sides” for violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, last summer.
In an op-ed in the Salt Lake Tribune over the weekend, Romney said he would “support the president’s policies when I believe they are in the best interest of Utah and the nation” but “will continue to speak out when the president says or does something which I believe is divisive, racist, sexist, anti-immigrant, dishonest or destructive to democratic institutions.”

Debate: Abolish All Gender Prefential Laws For True Equality
Ed. Note: Chris Seaton challenged me to a debate, following the Boy Scouts of America allowing girls to join and changing its name to Scouts BSA. Was this the end of gender distinction? Were they truly just a social construct? I argued the negative and Chris argues the affirmative:
Third wave intersectional feminism* slew another public monster when it managed to sever the terms “Boy” and “Scouts.” The institution wasn’t necessarily an issue. Rather, it was one more nail to the church door of the third wave feminist thesis** that boys and girls don’t have any fundamental differences. Gender*** is an irrelevant social construct.
If we are to accept this premise, then I submit we take the bold leap and abolish all gender preferential laws. Equality means we take away the regulations designed to benefit or deter a particular gender and level the playing field completely.
Defining a “gender preferential law” is tricky, but for the purposes of this debate let’s use “laws designed to benefit or penalize a specific gender.” Moving forward, this allows us to knock down a few laws that are essentially irrelevant under this new mental framework.
Let’s start with a law that’s been distorted beyond its original intent: Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. This law was passed to ensure girls and young women in education were given equal opportunities for participation in activities and education. After all, women should get the opportunity to play softball or baseball just as much as men, right?
Well, with our new gender framework we can finally rid ourselves of the relic that is Title IX. If gender is meaningless then this law is redundant and should be stricken from the books.
The same can be said of the regulatory guidelines turning college campuses on their heads. The “Dear Colleague” Title IX tribunals were, at face value, created to give young women the chance to speak out in cases of sexual assault and be heard in an easier fashion than if they had to go through the actual legal system.**** Since we’ve reduced gender to a simple social construct, no one should have an issue jettisoning the “Dear Colleague” guidelines.
Some reading this by now are probably dismissing my arguments as presenting outlandish cases to make my point. Let’s take a moment and scale things to a more palatable level.
There is a classification of business called “woman-owned” for a reason: it’s easier to secure contracts if you’re listed as one. Now that we’ve reduced gender to nothing, there’s no reason for the Small Business Administration to keep providing these benefits to businesses that are 51% or more owned by women. Strike these certifications from the books and allow all businesses to compete on their merits.
At the heart of the issue is the desire for equality of opportunity and equality of outcome. If that means allowing girls and women leaders into Scout packs and troops, it also means shedding the legal benefits favoring a person based on gender. If one truly believes gender is a social construct, then that person should have no issues striking from the books every gender preferential law.
If you begin to sputter counter-arguments about “privilege” and “toxic masculinity,” then your original thesis on gender is invalid. If gender means nothing, then there is no male privilege or toxic masculinity. Allowing exceptions based on intersectional talking points doesn’t just defeat the entire gender thesis, it’s blatantly hypocritical.
Worse yet, if you choose to make the argument that women deserve these legal benefits because of their lack of privilege or oppression in society, you argue against a cornerstone of feminism itself: men and women are equal. Treating one gender as deserving of special treatment because the patriarchy harmed them for generations means you belittle the personal agency of people identifying as that gender. You’re calling them helpless.
These statements may seem as though they fall into the category of reductio ad absurdum, but this is where our modern society finds ourselves. Academia has clashed long enough with basic science and biology to the point where we must consider the absurd as factual. I can run my hand down my throat and feel the Adam’s Apple. A biological female cannot do the same thing. Yet we are told by our “betters” in their ivory towers that even making such a statements renders you a sexist bigot.
So let’s test the mettle of academia in the real world. If those preaching the dogma of third wave intersectional feminism truly believe what they say, they should have no problems ending all gender preferential laws. Not one blue haired gender studies major gets to screech from this point forward about lack of equal treatment from zir cisgendered peers.
We’re all the same, living in harmony, so let’s get to work in the trenches of law and strike as many of these redundant laws from the books as possible.
*The school of feminism that believes women are oppressed yet powerful, that hierarchies of “privilege” exist, and that all oppressed groups much come together to smash the “patriarchy.”
**Given the dogmatic approach of some of some feminists, a Martin Luther reference was appropriate.
***For the purposes of this argument, “gender” and “sex” mean the same thing. ***This footnote shouldn’t be needed, but in today’s society: no, I am not condoning rape or sexual assault. This is called a debate for a reason.

Why I was absent at APC meetings – Saraki
Saraki Saraki however said that there was no time he will sneak into meetings of the APC when he never sneaked to join the party. In a statement, in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu and entitled,
“Much Ado About Saraki’s Absence from APC Meetings”, he said that the reason why the Senate President could not attend the caucus meeting was the fact that he arrived Abuja from Benin after he attended the Senate Roundtable on Migration and Human Trafficking, one of the interventions by the lawmaking body to source for legislative and policy solutions to one of the major problems plaguing the youth in our country today.
On the NEC, Saraki could not attend as the meeting took place the same time he was at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) where he was fighting to clear his name as the defendant in an ongoing case.
The statement read, “After many queries and concerns expressed by some colleagues, friends and associates on the absence of my principal, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, President of the Senate, at Monday night’s National Caucus and Tuesday morning’s National Executive Council meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC), I would like to make the following clarifications:
“On Monday, the Senate President was in Benin from morning till 6.15pm, attending the Senate Roundtable on Migration and Human Trafficking, one of the interventions by the lawmaking body to source for legislative and policy solutions to one of the major problems plaguing the youth in our country today. The event was attended by Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, his Deputy, Hon. Phillip Shuaib, representatives of the Governor of Delta State and Oba of Benin, international partners and many stakeholders.
Dr. Saraki and his delegation, including Senators, returned to his Abuja home at 7.45 pm, while the APC National Caucus meeting was scheduled to begin by 8.00 pm on the same night. Clearly, there was no way he could have arrived at the venue on time, especially as it would be a breach of protocol to do so at a meeting presided over by the President.
“On Tuesday when the NEC meeting was holding at the APC secretariat, the Senate President was at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) where he was fighting to clear his name as the defendant in an ongoing case. Dr. Saraki did not fix the date of the adoption of briefs by prosecution and defence lawyers. The Tribunal did, and by law, Saraki must be physically present at the Tribunal as the defendant. It stands to reason that he cannot be in two places at once, and so he was unavoidably absent at the NEC meeting. “
Let me also state clearly here that Dr. Saraki is not one to sneak into a room via the window. He would rather enter through the front door so that his entry is well noted and acknowledged. Nigerians know that when he joined the APC, he did not sneak in. Therefore, no one should attach any mischievous or inaccurate interpretation to his absence at the two meetings held at times when his whereabouts were a matter of public record.
“Sponsors of misinformation as to why Saraki was not present at the Caucus and NEC meetings should be clear that there is no special reason behind the absence. The Senate President is not a coward. When he left the PDP in 2014, he was bold enough to inform the then President of his decision and left openly with his supporters. He therefore has no reason to be sneaking or hiding now.
“It is incontrovertible that he is a leader, major stakeholder and founding father of the APC. Nothing has changed with regard to all these. I hope this clarification will halt the speculations, misinformation, misinterpretation, mischief and Fake News about the ‘Why’ and ‘What’ of his absence at the APC National Caucus and NEC meetings
. “I appreciate the fact that the nation is gradually inching towards the electioneering period and permutations will be rife. I plead with analysts, commentators and forecasters to always get their facts right and not impute frivolous meanings to otherwise innocent events and occurrences.”

The Shocking Abuse Allegations Against Michael Fassbender
As Hollywood’s producing humen fall prey to the reckon over sex misconduct, certain -Alisters have managed to sidestep scrutiny.
But Twitter never forgets.
While the media gushes over Michael Fassbender’s secret Ibiza nuptials with Alicia Vikander and their new home in Lisbon, dark #MeToo-style allegations from the actor’s past have been demoted to social media.
In her March Vogue cover-up, Tomb Raider actress Vikander referenced her domestic bliss with Fassbender, telling the magazine,” I feel I’m more happy and content than I’ve ever been .”
Yet the newlywed Fassbender was a no-show at the 2018 Golden Globes ceremony. While other alleged abusers walked the red carpet in all black, triggering social media backlash over their perceived hypocrisy, Fassbender appears to have simply opted out. Vikander, who was a presenter at the ceremony, arrived, posed for photos, and did E! interviews alone. In conducted in conformity with the Time’s Up initiative, Vikander wore black.
Fassbender may have avoided the Golden Globes and a flurry of envision pieces, but allegations regarding domestic abuse have silently trailed him in recent years.
The domestic abuse allegedly occurred in 2010, just two years before Fassbender made his X-Men debut as Magneto and made an award-winning performance in the critically acclaimed Shame . A 2012 Hollywood Reporter article,” Fassbender on Fire ,” chronicled the German-Irish actor’s meteoric rise , noting that, while” development projects started pouring in from top-flight administrators” around 2009, it wasn’t until 2011 that Fassbender had his” real introduced by renown .” The 2012 profile continued,” One of the most gifted actors today, the sun of Shame , A Dangerous Method and the upcoming Prometheus has the industry in awe .”
A 2016 Guardian profile goes one pace further, positing that Fassbender’s career has been characterized exclusively by personal and professional success.” Twice nominated for an Oscar, the 39 -year-old suns in three new cinemas between now and January alone, one of which he likewise rendered ,” Fassbender’s interviewer raved.” And all this with scarcely a misstep( he opted not even to watch the 2010 flop Jonah Hex ), nor gossip editorial indiscretion. It is about as flawless a movie star career as would be possible to perfect .”
” He was sleeping in urine. I woke him and he began to be violent and threw me over a chair, transgressing my nose .” div>
— Sunawin Andrews on Michael Fassbender
In the age of the internet, it seems altogether too bold to publicly declare any human being to be indiscretion-free, let alone Michael Fassbender. It simply takes a simple Google search to find the TMZ bulletin that vividly chronicled Fassbender’s alleged abuse. While the 2010 report landed right before Fassbender’s mainstream success, it came after Inglourious Basterds — and was promptly discounted and apparently forgotten by writers, -Alist administrators, and Hollywood executives alike.
Fassbender has never commented on these allegations from his former girlfriend Sunawin ” Leasi ” Andrews, then a 36 -year-old aspiring model and actress.
Nearly a decade afterward, it’s hard to pinpoint a single way in which these allegations negatively affected Fassbender’s career, or even find a single profile of the actor that mentions them. Fassbender, who has wrestled with the misogyny and violence of some of his disturbed characters in publish, has apparently never been asked to comment on his own past.
The closest thing to an official statement comes politenes of Fassbender’s mothers. His mother, Adele, told the Daily Mail ,” Anyone who knows Michael at all knows that it’s a complete fabrication .” The actor’s father, Josef, told The Irish Sun that,” I don’t know where she is getting this story from, Michael is the most gentle boy you could ever meet .”
But a petition filed in courtroom by Andrews and obtained by The Daily Beast tells another story: one where Fassbender, on separate occasions, was alleged to have dragged her alongside a auto and violated her nose.
Reached by phone, Andrews declined to comment on the tale and pertained a Daily Beast reporter to her tribunal filings.
” You’ve got the paperwork. What more is there to say ?” she said.
Fassbender’s representative did not respond to repeated requests for comment.
According to court filings, Andrews filed for a restraining order against Fassbender in Los Angeles County in March 2010, requesting the actor stay at least 100 yards away from her, and her then-1 8-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son.
She likewise tried lawyers’ costs, nearly $24,000 to pay her medical bills( allegedly arising from hurts she suffered at Fassbender’s hands ), and requested Fassbender enroll in a 52 -week batterer intervention program.
In her petition, she listed the” date of most recent abuse” as Nov. 18, 2009. But in her narration of the encounter, she wrote that she visited a hospital on Nov. 29.( Her medical bills, submitted in the filings , note a Nov. 29 date of service. It’s unclear whether Nov. 18 was a clerical error on her proportion, or if she sought medical attention 11 days later .)
One disturbing episode allegedly occurred when Fassbender, Andrews, and two friends dined at a eatery. According to Andrews, Fassbender became enraged when one of her ex-boyfriends approached their table to say hello.
” Michael was booze and became angry ,” Andrews wrote, adding that, when it was time to leave, her worried friends followed them home.” Michael was driving my auto dangerously fast and hollering at me. I implored him to stop the car in fear of road traffic accidents or for my children who were home asleep ,” Andrews continued.” As we got closer to my house I throw my auto in stop. Get out walked around the car to draw key from ignition. Michael drove of[ f] dragging me along from the car .”
Andrews claimed that Fassbender” stopped after he recognized I could not walk and get out of automobile. He picked me up and put me in vehicle as my friends pulled up behind us. They stayed the night to aid calm things .” She woke on Nov. 29″ in a deep sweat and pain with vaginal bleeding ,” her petition countries.” I went to the hospital and had a distorted left ankle, blown out left knee cap and a bursted ovarian cyst ,” Andrews continued.” Lots of internal bleeding .”
One former friend at dinner that night, who didn’t want to be named and refused remark, said she didn’t witness the alleged car-dragging incident.
” I was with her that night. I know that they had a fight but I didn’t witness anything he did to her ,” the onetime buddy said when reached by phone, adding,” When we got to the house, they were not fighting anymore .”
Andrews detailed a second alleged incident at a film festival in July 2009. While she doesn’t name the event, Andrews was most likely referring to the Ischia Global Film& Music Fest 2009 in Ischia, Italy.
The actress claimed in her petition that Fassbender assaulted her after a nighttime of boozing at a festival “ceremony,” courtroom papers uncover.
Andrews alleged she went to bed but Fassbender continued partying until the wee hours before returning to their hotel.” He entered the room with a friend at about 5 a.m. drunk and they tried to get into bed with me ,” Andrews noted in her petition, adding that she checked into another chamber, apparently to catch some sleep away from them.
The next morning, Andrews returned to aftermath Fassbender for a panel. According to the schedule of events for the 2009 celebration, Fassbender was slated to appear at a 10 a.m. Movie Educational Seminar on Thursday, July 16 — the morning after an 11 p.m. Dinner Party with Award Ceremony “to follow.”
Fassbender was allegedly a mess when Andrews find him.
” He was sleeping in urine ,” she wrote in her court filing.” I woke him and he began to be violent and threw me over a chair, breaking my nose .”
According to the court record, a magistrate awarded a temporary restraining order that called for Fassbender to move out of the couple’s Bel Air home, which she said was leased in her epithet. The tribunal built the ruling based on Andrews’ claims that Fassbender was currently out of the country and therefore not living there, records show.
” Michael is currently shooting movies and is to return to the USA in the coming week ,” Andrews wrote in the petition.” I currently live alone with my two children where this is his only US address. I am still retrieving from my hurts and am afraid for my safety. I pay all bills and lived there before him .”
Of course, Fassbender isn’t the first actor not to be derailed by allegations regarding domestic mistreat. The entertainment industry is riddled with accused and even acknowledged abusers. Still, perhaps because he was just on the cusp of notoriety, Fassbender’s case made surprisingly few waves. Aside from a short TMZ piece, there was a 2010 article in the Irish Mail on Sunday digging into Fassbender’s accuser.
After hailing Fassbender’s streak of high-profile roles, the article wasted no time impugning Andrews’ credibility.
The Irish Mail declared that Fassbender’s” status as Ireland’s hottest young sun was placed in jeopardy” by Andrews'” string of lurid accusations .”
” Leasi, a modeling, claimed that the Killarney man attacked her in a drunken fury after a film festival, violating her nose and inducing her to anxiety for her two young children ,” the article stated.
The report went on to attack Andrews, smearing details of her” seedy past” across the page.
” However the Irish Mail on Sunday em> can reveal that the woman who is threatening the 32 -year-old Irishman’s reputation and, indeed, his very subsistence, is herself a woman with a troubled and somewhat seedy past. The model has had a string of lovers including an internet porn noble and a married man; she has children by different father-gods, her first as an 18 -year-old; and her early years were spent posing for’ erotic’ lesbian portraits .”
The unabashedly victim-shaming article concluded,” Nor was it the only instance of domestic violence in Miss Andrews’s chequered past. Indeed, much of her history seems to suggest that, either she suffers from a persecution complex–or else she genuinely brought about by the worst in humen .”
When contacted again by The Daily Beast, Andrews said the negative reports were inaccurate and that she’d been targeted by a smear campaign. She was a swimsuit and lingerie modeling and cinema and Tv actress, but never did X-rated project, she said.
According to one 2009 report, Andrews and Fassbender met when she visited her ex, producer Lawrence Bender, on the set of Inglourious Basterds in Germany. A 2006 article in the Seattle Weekly offered further details on the past that the Mail on Sunday alluded to.
In 2005, Andrews reportedly procured a one-year restraining order against her then-boyfriend, Seth Warshavsky, otherwise known as” the Bill Gates of porn .” Andrews, who was 25 at the time, claimed “[ Warshavsky] choked her during a limousine journey in Las Vegas last fall and has physically assaulted her in front of her 6-year-old child .” According to court documents, Andrews accused Warshavsky of” stalking her home” and threatening” to have my baby’s father killed .” While Warshavsky insisted that the civil action was ” simply a frivolous restraining order in an attempt to extort fund, and is in the process of being fell ,” the order was renewed for another time, according to the Seattle Weekly .
After domestic mistreat allegations against Fassbender first transgressed, the Daily Mail asked,” Now, after an Affair with a Former Porn Model and Accusations of Domestic Violence, Has It All Gone Wrong ?” The newspaper quoted a” senior movie industry figure” as went on to say that,” Attain no mistake, this has been noted at the highest level .”
” Nobody knows the full circumstances of the case but it seems exceedingly out of character ,” the source added.” Sure, he likes to have a sip now and again, but he is fundamentally a gentle guy. If he has a weakness, it is wives .”
Fassbender’s camp called Andrews’ restraining order into question because she filed it while the actor was filming in the U.K. When asked to comment on Andrews’ restraining notice, his “surprised” father responded,” Michael has been in England for the last six months. I don’t know how anything like that could have happened .”
Filming on Jane Eyre has just taken place in the U.K. from March 2010 through May 2010. Andrews filed a request for dismissal on April 5, 2010 — the working day before a scheduled hearing on the matter.
At the time, the New York Daily News cited “sources” who claimed that,” Andrews still wants Fassbender, “whos been” filming in England, to maintain his distance. But she feared her objection could get the Irish-German sun barred from returning to America .” One friend told the News ,” She doesn’t want to injured his job .” The insider also claimed Andrews didn’t want to damage Inglourious Basterds as an Oscars contender, as the film’s producer, Lawrence Bender, is the father-god of one of her children.
Court papers reveal that TMZ had requested a judge’s permission to livestream the April 6 hearing for Andrew’s protective ordering. Whether the court granted the outlet’s petition is unknown.
The temporary restraining notice expired when Andrews receded her petition the day before the hearing for a permanent protective order, records show. Court papers do not indicate why Andrews canceled her request.
In 2012, Fassbender and Andrews had a brief, well-publicized reunion after the Golden Globes. The former pair was spotted together at The Writer’s Room in Los Angeles, and Andrews was appreciated leaving the actor’s hotel the next day.
It was the last tabloid sighting of the former couple.
The Establishment picked the domestic violence accusations back up in 2016, questioning whether Fassbender’s race dedicated him a free pass.
The author, Becca Rose , noted Andrews’ 2012 reunion with Fassbender and the withdrawal of the restraining order complicates the narrative. But she said it’s the media’s occupation to look deeper into the perturbing allegations.
Andrews never publicly forswore her allegations. Meanwhile, Fassbender has catapulted to success without having to answer to the allegations or” suffer any significant outcomes ,” The Establishment piece notes.
” Leasi Andrews gets a mention on his Wikipedia page, but simply as an ex ,” the article nations.” To find anything on the abuse allegations, you have to hunt for it. It is, for all intents and purposes, like it never happened .”
On Fassbender’s current Wikipedia page, the actor’s” personal life” begins with a mention of ex Nicole Beharie in 2012, and ends with the actor’s recent wedding to Alicia Vikander.
Andrews has been completely erased.

50 Years On, MLK Calls For a Radical Revolution of Values by Libero Della Piana
Fifty years ago, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered one of his most prophetic and powerful speeches, ‘Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence’, at Riverside Church in New York City. One year later – to the day – he was assassinated in Memphis.
King’s words are as urgent and powerful as ever today. He declared his opposition to the U.S. war in Vietnam in his strongest terms to date, but perhaps more importantly for us, King identifies a broader challenge for the future.
King asks us to confront three evils – racism, extreme materialism, and militarism – with what he calls a “radical revolution of values.” The Beyond Vietnam speech goes far beyond the issue of war to challenge U.S. self-identity, and to shake the very foundations of structural racism, exploitation and militarism.
We need King’s words now more than ever. The Trump Era turns his revolution of values on its head, as our president revives our nation’s racism, materialism and militarism in ways we could not have thought possible.
King’s speech details U.S. hypocrisy and crimes in Vietnam. It names the many reasons – moral, economic, and political – the U.S. should have withdrawn from that conflict, which caused so much death and damage at home and abroad.
King opposes the war in Vietnam both because it drains coffers at home, preventing much-needed social programs, and on a deeper level because the war was immoral. He identifies and gives voice to the Vietnamese people and their view of the U.S. war, as well as “the cruel irony of watching Negro and white boys on TV screens as they kill and die together for a nation that has been unable to seat them together in the same schools.”
Then King goes deeper. “The war in Vietnam is but a symptom of a far deeper malady within the American spirit,” he says. King condemns income inequality, bigotry, U.S. military aggression, “Western arrogance,” and injustices of all kinds. To solve them, he calls us all to revolution.
A true revolution of values will soon look uneasily on the glaring contrast of poverty and wealth. With righteous indignation, it will look across the seas and see individual capitalists of the West investing huge sums of money in Asia, Africa, and South America, only to take the profits out with no concern for the social betterment of the countries, and say, ‘This is not just.’
It will look at our alliance with the landed gentry of South America and say, ‘This is not just.’ The Western arrogance of feeling that it has everything to teach others and nothing to learn from them is not just…
America, the richest and most powerful nation in the world, can well lead the way in this revolution of values.
King argues for a radical transformation of all aspects of society to make us worthy of the values our nation claims to uphold. He also calls for a new role for the U.S. in the world, a kind of global moral leadership. King is not for U.S. retreating from the world. On the contrary, he calls for a U.S. which champions global justice, as a brother to all nations.
Martin Luther King’s revolution isn’t a call to overthrow the U.S. political structure. He calls on the people of our country to struggle for a different set of values. King doesn’t call for a revolution from without, but rather asks us to become a global beacon of freedom, justice and equality. What a contrast with Trump’s vision of the world.
Trump’s foreign policy is all about pursuing the narrow interests of U.S. corporations, not about universal values of human rights and equity. Martin Luther King Jr. said “Every nation must now develop an overriding loyalty to mankind as a whole in order to preserve the best in their individual societies.” Donald Trump said “America First will be the major and overriding theme of my administration,” echoing the shallow slogan that was once the rallying call of fascists in this country.
Despite the Riverside speech’s genius, it was a huge risk for King. He struggled with writing the speech and making such a bold declaration of opposition to the war. Others in the leadership of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference warned him off this kind of public statement, as they believed it would derail his authority and the civil right’s movement’s agenda.
Tavis Smiley’s book Death of a King documents how King’s anti-war stance, beginning with the Beyond Vietnam speech, closed doors and led the White House to uninvite him for a visit. Smiley explains further in a Chicago Tribune interview:
The White House called on their black surrogates, if you will, to go after Dr. King. There are lot of people who are going to be shocked when they read this text that the NAACP and the National Urban League came out against Dr. King publicly at that time.
It wasn’t just political and movement leaders that turned on King, it was also the public. The last opinion poll taken during his lifetime showed 75 percent viewed him unfavorably. At the time of his assassination, the man who had become internationally recognized for the moral values of his civil rights leadership was seen as an ingrate or traitor by many at home.
Today, we have a national obsession with King as a martyr, as an “I have a Dream” meme. This hides the reality of his full and remarkable growth into a radical democratic leader. This is in part because this development has never been fully recognized.
The radical King challenged the United States to face its violent role in Southeast Asia, called for a radical redistribution of wealth through the Poor People’s Campaign, called for Christians to live up to the teachings of the Gospel.
Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was killed at age 39. He was younger than I am today. His natural life certainly could have had him alive today to see that racism, materialism and militarism are alive and well, and to see the Presidency of Donald Trump, who so casually relishes in the very moral corruption that King decried. Despite many gains, many of the problems King identified half a century ago are worse today.
Donald Trump has repeatedly appealed to fear and bigotry, resorting to blaming immigrants and Muslims for social problems and violence. While pandering to Black voters, his behavior is dismissive of Black people’s real conditions, and his policies are disastrous for people of color across the country. Trump openly sides with the powerful over the powerless, reversing King’s moral challenge.
There is perhaps no greater example of extreme materialism than Donald Trump, with his lavish lifestyle, relish for excess and opulence. His cabinet gathers that the greatest group of billionaires and corporate elites ever seen in government anywhere. Corporate power has long dominated U.S. politics, but under Trump, corporate power has moved from pulling the strings to running the show.
Trump, who has called himself the most “militaristic person” in the world, has proposed a budget with one of the greatest expansions of military spending in U.S. history, while gutting what few social programs remain. He has casually discussed the use of nuclear weapons and nuclear proliferation. His boast that he can end conflicts is belied by his glee over U.S. military might.
Trump epitomizes the “giant triplets” – racism, extreme materialism, and militarism – King warns are the greatest threat to our future.
For many years, on April 4, I have attended the annual commemoration of King’s powerful speech in the very nave of Riverside Church where he delivered his remarks.
Hearing King’s voice echo through this historic hall still sends chills, as much for its prescience as for his daunting challenge to all of us to live up to his call for a radical revolution of values.
King’s challenge on that day still rings true today.
Now let us begin. Now let us rededicate ourselves to the long and bitter, but beautiful, struggle for a new world. This is the calling of the sons of God, and our brothers wait eagerly for our response. Shall we say the odds are too great? Shall we tell them the struggle is too hard? Will our message be that the forces of American life militate against their arrival as full men, and we send our deepest regrets? Or will there be another message – of longing, of hope, of solidarity with their yearnings, of commitment to their cause, whatever the cost? The choice is ours, and though we might prefer it otherwise, we must choose in this crucial moment of human history.
