MIDNIGHT DELICACY
———
The night air was cool as Jason pulled into the near-empty parking lot of the late-night drive-through. The hum of the engine faded, leaving only the soft buzz of neon lights and the distant chirping of crickets. You had insisted on this stop, craving something sweet and simple after the long, stressful day.
Jason glanced around, taking in the desolate scene. “I’m starting to see why you like these 1 a.m. food runs,” he mused.
You smiled, leaning back in your seat, the smell of greasy food already wafting through the air. “I don’t get hassled as much. It’s a welcomed break.”
Jason nodded, his eyes softening. “I can imagine.”
You turned to him, your voice quieter now. “It’s not like I don’t appreciate my fans or where they’ve gotten me. But sometimes… I just want a little—”
“Peace?” Jason finished for you, his eyes locking with yours.
You smiled, nodding. “Yeah… I just don’t get to do normal things as much anymore.”
Jason smirked, taking a sip of his drink. “It is a little creepy, though.”
You nudged him with your elbow, grinning. “Stop ruining the mood.”
“Oh… there’s a mood?” he teased, raising an eyebrow.
You rolled your eyes. “Shut up.”
Jason chuckled, his voice dropping to a more playful tone. “Bet you bring all your boyfriends here, don’t you?”
You tried to play it off, but the hint of jealousy in his voice was unmistakable. “Well, not exactly.”
Jason turned to you, curiosity flickering in his eyes. “Oh? What do you mean?”
You shrugged, your cheeks warming as you glanced down at your feet. “I don’t exactly remember the last proper date I went on.”
Jason’s teasing smile faded, replaced with something softer, more genuine. “Well, aren’t you lucky I’m here.”
You laughed, but it was nervous, your heart beating a little faster. “Does it really count if you’re getting paid?”
Jason swallowed, his voice quieter now, almost hesitant. “Well, I mean… we could go when I’m not on the job. If you wanted?”
You blinked, surprised, your chest tightening with something unfamiliar. “Are you paying?” you asked, trying to lighten the moment.
Jason grinned, rubbing the back of his neck. “On my wage? Guess I’ll have to start saving up.”
You laughed again, feeling the tension ease. “First date will be my treat. I’ll just charge you if I get bored.”
Jason’s eyes sparkled with amusement. “Trust me, princess, that ain’t gonna happen.” He leaned over, grinning mischievously as he stole a bite of your ice cream.
“Hey!” you protested, swatting his hand away. “Get your own!”
He smirked, taking another bite. “I’ve got one here.”
You narrowed your eyes, pointing to the corner of his lips. “You’ve got some—”
Jason raised an eyebrow, glancing down at his lips. “Oh?”
For a moment, time seemed to slow. Your eyes locked with his, the playful banter fading as the space between you shrunk. He leaned in, his breath warm against your skin, his eyes darkening with something unspoken. Your heart raced as you instinctively leaned closer, the tension between you thickening.
But just as your lips were about to meet, Jason’s elbow hit the steering wheel, and the car horn blared, making both of you jump back in surprise.
You burst into laughter, the moment shattered, while Jason groaned, rubbing his face. “Smooth,” you teased, still giggling.
Jason shot you a sheepish grin, the heat between you not quite gone, just postponed. “Yeah, well… there’s always next time.”
You smiled, the thought of a “next time” hung in the air between you.
——
Jason and you lingered in the car for a moment after the horn blared, both still laughing softly, but the undercurrent of something heavier remained. His eyes flicked to your lips more than once, and you couldn’t stop yourself from wondering what would’ve happened if the moment hadn’t been interrupted. The tension between you crackled, like an unspoken invitation hanging in the air, too tempting to ignore but too delicate to address outright.
Jason finally let out a low sigh, running a hand through his hair as he broke the silence. “Well, I guess that’s one way to ruin the moment,” he said with a chuckle, but his voice was a little rough, as though he wasn’t quite ready to joke about it.
You swallowed, your heart still racing from the near-kiss, and tried to ease the mood. “Maybe the universe was saving you from embarrassment, Jay.”
He leaned back in his seat, eyes glancing over at you with a smirk. “Or maybe it was saving you,” he shot back, his voice teasing, but there was something else behind his words, a softness that made your stomach twist in a way you couldn’t quite explain.
The weight of what almost happened hovered between you both, neither of you willing to push it further, but the moment still lingered, making your skin prickle with a mixture of warmth and frustration.
“Jason…” you began, feeling the need to say something—anything—but not knowing exactly what that was. You didn’t want to make things awkward, but you also didn’t want to let it slip away as if it hadn’t meant anything.
He turned toward you, his expression unreadable but his eyes soft. “Yeah?”
You opened your mouth to respond, but your phone buzzed from your lap, breaking the moment again. You glanced at the screen, a reminder notification popping up.
“Shit,” you muttered under your breath, realising the time. “I have a meeting with Roman in the morning. You know how cranky he gets if I’m late.”
Jason groaned, rubbing his face with both hands. “Ugh—who needs an early morning meeting?” His voice trailed off, but you could hear the clear disappointment haunting his tone.
You rolled your eyes, sinking deeper into your seat. “Yeah, tell me about it. If we don’t get home soon, I’ll never hear the end of it.”
Jason gave a small, reluctant nod, his eyes shifting toward the road. “Alright, princess. Let’s get you home before he blows a fuse.”
As he started the engine, the moment between you both seemed to settle into a strange kind of peace. There was still something unspoken hanging in the air, the missed kiss now a lingering thought that neither of you could shake. But the conversation had shifted—back to reality, back to responsibilities—and neither of you dared to push the boundary that had been so close to breaking.
——
The ride back was quieter this time, not awkward, but filled with the awareness of what almost happened. You stole glances at Jason, watching the way his hands gripped the steering wheel, how his jaw tightened every time the thought seemed to cross his mind. And every time you met his eyes, there was a spark, a question neither of you was quite ready to answer.
As the car pulled up to your building, Jason shifted in his seat, turning to face you. “You should get some sleep before that meeting. Roman’s already a pain. Don’t give him more ammunition.”
You gave a tired smile, still feeling the weight of what hadn’t been said. “Yeah… I guess you’re right.” You paused, hand lingering on the door handle, before turning back to him. “Thanks for tonight, Jay. It… It was nice.”
Jason’s eyes softened, and for a moment, the tension seemed to melt into something warmer, something comfortable. “Anytime, princess,” he said quietly, the nickname sending a little flutter through your chest.
Your head span with the lingering feeling of what could have been. As you headed up to your apartment, you couldn’t help but wonder if this missed moment was just the beginning—if the next time you were both caught in the current, neither of you would pull away.
And the thought made your heart race all over again.

Withered Cards | II
Pairings: Jason Todd x Reader.
Warnings: Blood, gore, violence, murder, swearing, major and minor injuries, death.
Summary: Despite the many different problems you overcome with Jason Todd, you always eventually make it back to each other. Even after his death, how could you still love a man who changed so much? Even when you made a turn for the worst.
Series Masterlist
The buzz of the flickering lamppost was almost tantalizing, the dimmed lights making all shadows look as though they were creeping closer from within the dark alleys of Gotham. Your feet were light and silent as you moved along the narrow path, wet from the rain that was beginning to sprinkle down. Broken glass crunched beneath your boots, and you cringed at the loud sound before taking a quick glimpse around. Nobody was here, besides the occasional drunk man stumbling across the street, too lost in his thoughts and large swigs to be paying attention.
The distant sound of sirens wailed throughout the night, and as the rain began to slightly pour down harder and soak your jacket, the cool breeze upon the wet fabric caused for you to shiver.
You almost wished that you could have been back at the lair.
Almost.
Your earpiece cackled to life, and a familiar voice spoke, "Well? Is he there yet!?" The joker groaned into your ear, and you resisted the urge to roll your eyes and give a snarky comment.
Glancing out the dark alley you were currently hidden within, the shadows covering your form almost completely, you leant against the wall impatiently.
"No, he's not."
"Oh, fucken shit face!" He let out a loud agitated laugh. "Can't people ever do anything right?"
You glanced down at the wristwatch the Joker had insisted that you wore for his own reasoning, poorly looked after, but still useable. The glass of the watch was scratched and cracked in most places, and the leather strapping on your wrist was barely still attached.
3:43am.
You had been waiting thirteen minutes too long.
Your patience was already beginning to thin; due to the cold weather or the agitating voice speaking in your ear, you weren't sure.
Movement from the corner of your eye quickly caught your attention, and a man emerged from behind the flickering lamp post, his face shadowed as he bowed his head. You recognized him to be the one Joker had sent for you to meet, Dr. Grinvield. A white lab coat draped around his thin frame, gray hair thinning and glasses propped on the bridge of his nose. You noticed a thin scar trailing down his brow almost like a strike of lighting
You frowned, noticing a second man at his side. Tall and buff, with a gun held steadily at his side. You felt unease, and you hesitated to move out from the shadows to reveal yourself.
"Don't be shy, my little clown, go ahead," the Joker giggled into your ear, and you realized that you must have spoken aloud. "A big man holding a gun has never stopped you before now, has it?"
A pause, and when his voice came back, it was free of any humor.
"Just get the job done."
Inhaling a breath, you brushed off the nerves and stepped out from the shadows of the dark alley, your hand resting against your belt that gleamed the blade of your knife.
Upon hearing the gravel crunch beneath your feet, the two men turned quickly to face you, gun cocked in your direction.
Dr. Grinvield slapped the man, eyes wide in horror at the gun pointed toward you. "You fool! You kill her, then were both dead," he hissed, yellow teeth flashing from under his thin, pale lips.
By the time you were now stood in front of them, you took your time in scanning the two. Nothing threatening, to you, at least. Just two silly men trapped within in the Joker's deeds.
"I'd prefer if you came on time, next time," you spoke, eyeing the two. "And alone. The Joker never agreed to you have a little bodyguard."
The Jokers clear instructions played on repeat in your head; Meet Dr. Grinvield. Get the vial. Get out. No distractions, and no plan changing.
With a gruff sigh, Grinvield dug into the small of his pocketed lab coat, fishing out a tiny vial with a thick, dark liquid. What it was, however, you weren't sure. Nor did you care enough to ask.
You were aware the Joker had been planning something deadly, but you knew better than to ask. Perhaps another laughing gas or toxin.
He held it carefully within his palm, almost afraid of any immediate movement he made. He dropped it into your palm, gaze trailed on the sloshing liquid. He paused.
"Now, kid, you must remind the boss that this is only a prototype. It shouldn't be used until I've completely figured out the biochemical formulations and timely affect, but so far, it's what he's asked for."
You nodded, examining the small vial before slipping it into your boot securely.
"Tampering with it will ruin the formula," he continued. "But by the next few weeks, everything should hopefully be running on schedule. Just let the boss know-"
He was abruptly cut off by a nearby clang of metal, the sound echoing off the nearby walls.
You felt the hairs at the back of your neck stand, and you were quick to look around the dark deserted street. Nobody was in sight, but you did feel the lingering gaze of eyes watching somewhere nearby.
You frowned, taking one last glance at the two men before taking off into a quick sprint. You weren't in the mood to put up with any more people, and you most definitely were not in the mood to bump into Batman.
The familiar bat signal glowed brightly in the dark sky, glaring down at you like a taunting reminder. You could only hope that it wasn't him who so happened to stumble upon you just two seconds ago. Yet, something told you that you had yet to be completely alone.
You could hear the faint shouts of Dr. Grinvield cursing out to you for leaving him there, a pathetic whine as he practically dragged his 'friend' along with him.
Rain started to trickle down more until you were almost completely drenched, but despite the sounds of the rain dripping down, you could hear the growing steps of somebody behind you, and you felt your heart rate increase.
They were running.
Running toward you. And fast.
Picking up your speed, you refused to look back. You were panting and squinting from the water blurring your vision under your mask, still conscious of the chaser behind you. You quickly turned a corner and stopped, reaching for your knife hoping that you were a few seconds ahead of them. You clasped your knife tightly within your grasp, adjusting your grip when both the water and the sweat from your palms made your grip falter. You waited, waited for the attacker to come sprinting around the corner, but it never came.
It was like anticipating a jump scare in a movie; waiting for the moment the killer jumps out and attacks within mere seconds...
Perhaps you had lost them.
“Unfortunately, you might need to try a little harder to rid me, Sweets,” a voice called, and you internally groaned once you had realized that you had not in fact lost them, but instead let your guard down for a moment too long.
You turned to see a boy who couldn’t be much older than you by the looks of it, despite the black domino mask hiding his identity. He was clad in a yellow cape, red tunic and green pants. You had to stifle down the smile creeping up onto your face. The evident ‘R’ printed on his chest told you exactly who this was.
“Robin,” you greeted with a mocking bow. Though you had never met before, you had seen and heard countless times of how the Batman had trained a new Robin to take over from Nightwing. So far, you knew nothing of his weaknesses.
“I didn’t know you were waiting to see me. I feel so rude for leaving early,” you faked a smile, though it didn’t reach your eyes.
Your heart was practically pounding in your chest. Surely if he was here, Batman would be lurking too, would he not?
Robin only shook his head, reaching for his bo-staff that was at his back. He twirled it in his grasp - experienced and practiced.
“Unfortunately, I'm not here to chat," Robin spoke, inching closer with a look that you couldn't quite place. Was it excitement? Nerves? Adrenaline?
You shrugged, readying your stance the longer the anticipation dragged. You just managed to catch the small smirk cornering on his lips.
It wouldn't be there for too long.
He was quick to move on his feet, swooping down and swinging his leg and knocking you off your balance. You grunted from the impact as your back clashed with the concrete floor, small pieces of smashed up glass, most likely from one of the drinkers, dug into your back and suit.
You raised your gun, kicking Robin off you and aimed, only for him to knock it out from your hand. You raised your other hand, clenched into a fist and punched. Hard. Kicking your knee up into the back of his knee, he doubled over off balance.
"Damn," you heard him groan, his hand moving away from his face to see the trail of blood trickling from his nose. "You know how to punch."
You went in for another one, only for his hand to stop yours mid swing, but you were quick to kick his stomach and push him down to the floor, his cheek pressed against the cold cement as you heard him groan in pain.
"Shouldn't you be in bed?" You shot, your voice dripping in sarcasm the longer you had him pinned beneath you.
You just managed to catch sight of his jaw clenching at the comment, but you were quickly distracted once he managed to wrestle his way out from under the weight of your body, tossing a small ball-like object at your feet. A thick fog clouded your vision in mere seconds. You coughed as the smoke entered your lungs, your hand waving around to try clear an airway, but you gasped once a leg swung beneath you, knocking you off your feet and to land on the wet cement floor with a grunt.
You winced when your tailbone landed on the floor, but you ignored the pain. You needed to get this boy away somehow.
You looked over, seeing your gun just a few feet away, but Robin's hand wrapped around your ankle and dragged you toward him, your chin smacking hard against the floor. He was quick to hover above you just as you had done before, your arms held down by his own.
You grunted in an attempt to kick him off, but he held firm and frowned down upon you. "What's this?" He questioned, a certain tease to his voice that made your blood boil. His hand went to the left side of your face, and you flinched back as his fingers effortlessly removed your earpiece.
He turned it over in his hand, before hovering it over your face with a cocky smirk.
What a prick.
"Did I disturb an important chat?"
Baring your teeth, you flung your head forward into his, using that as the upper hand to kick him off your body and stand shakily onto your feet. You watched as he stumbled to get up, but quickly regained himself.
You let out a tired breath.
“Just give up,” he said, nodding his head toward you. “Seems like somebody needs a break, I can tell.”
“Do I?” You glared, before lunging once again, your arms grabbing around his torso to try getting him on his back again, but he held his stance firm. He knew it was coming.
His own arms wrapped around you and spun you around so that your back was to his chest, his arms pinning yours down at your sides. You twisted in his grip, but it only caused for the both of you to drop to the floor.
Then he laughed.
He laughed.
Your head spun so fast you swore it could’ve flown off, and you glared behind you as you watched Robin try to stifle the evident smirk across his face.
“Your laughing?” You grunted. "Is this a joke to you?”
He quickly shook his head. “No, I’m laughing at the fact that I have had you distracted this whole time," he cracked a smile before releasing you, giving a small bow as he began to walk back.
You frowned, confused. “What?”
He shrugged. “Don’t worry about it, trouble! Nothing to worry your little head off, for now.” With a last glance, he grabbed his grappling hook and took off, leaving you confused and drenched.
Surely he couldn't have actually just taken off? There was absolutely no way he would have left you, a criminal, after a tiny fight? Surely, he would have tried to call the Bats, the police maybe, or even hold you hostage and torture questions out of you!
Your confusion only grew the longer you stood in your place, and it was once you had glanced down at the fallen earpiece on the ground that you remembered what you were here for.
You grabbed your gun and the dropped ear comm, taking one last glance over to the place you'd last seen him, and you ran.

MASTERLIST
**
Death, you’ve recently been forced to realise, isn't the same as how it’s portrayed in the movies.
It’s ugly, it’s gruesome, it’s wet bursts of blood and nauseating begs for someones life. There’s no heartfelt sixty second speech addressing every wrong thing they’ve done in their life up until that point. There’s no one holding their hand and offering comfort as they slowly slip away.
It’s loud and it’s quick and most of all: it’s lonely.
The official documentation containing your witness statement says ‘wrong place, wrong time.’ Personally, you think those words are a rather large understatement.
But if you’re honest: they are entirely correct.
Walking in on someone getting shot execution style through the back of the head is a perfect example of being at the wrong place, at entirely the wrong time.
But when you see those words printed on paper like it’s a simple explanation to everything you saw, it forces bile to the back of your throat; there’s something so impersonal about it, so dismissive.
You listened to him beg for his life. Shuddering cries and weeps and fingers fumbling in his wallet for the photos of his children.
“I’m a father.” He’d tried. “I’ve got three kids, please–please don’t do this.”
There is no mercy in this murder. There is no mercy for a father of three caught in the middle of something he never should have seen. There is just alive and dead. There is just a man holding photos of his children with shaking hands whilst a gun is to his head.
There is just you, watching and doing nothing like a coward.
The gunshot was deafening, but the silence left behind was even worse.
Your witness statement says wrong place, wrong time, and you wonder in the back of your head if those words are also printed on the documents detailing his death: father of three caught in the wrong place at the wrong time has been murdered.
Woman in the wrong place at the wrong time is now a target.
**
It’s two-thirty in the morning and you heave awake choking on a scream.
Jason has your bedroom door open and a gun in his hand before you have a chance to flick on the light. Before you have a chance to take in a full breath. Even before the world folds itself back into place in your head and you can realise that the sound of gunfire wasn’t real.
His efficiency is startling and the look in his eye is focused, dangerous. Your bedroom light is still off but there's a crack of light from the hallway and when Jason turns his head, his eyes glimmer and glow like a cats.
Strange.
“Are you alright? Are you hurt?” He asks, voice low, careful. The gun in his hand is pointed at the floor, but you see his finger resting beside the trigger. Jason flicks on your bedroom light and darts his attention to your bedroom window, checking for any signs of foul play.
“I’m sorry.” You force out, chest horribly tight. “I had that dream again.”
Jason deflates, thumb engaging the safety on his Glock, “I’ll get you some water.”
He disappears and you swipe away the tears streaming down your cheeks. Three nights in a row, the same dream, the same memory. Every time you wake up halfway to screaming. And each time Jason barrels into your room like he’s expecting you to be dying.
He’s good at his job. The best at his job.
He’s never lost a client.
You’re so glad he’s here.
Jason hands you a glass of water and sits at the end of your bed. He doesn’t say a word and you notice he’s not brought the gun back with him. Your chest loosens just a fraction and the rush of oxygen makes you sway, makes you feel lightheaded and a little sick all at once.
“I’m sorry, Jay.” You say again, guilty for waking him in the middle of the night when you know that the day has been stressful enough already. A knife attack in the middle of the street is hardly relaxing and you’re exhausted from that alone. You can’t quite imagine how it is for Jason even though he shows no signs of fatigue. “I didn’t mean to wake you.”
“S’okay.” He rumbles, glancing at your face and frowning when he catches the tear stains on your cheeks. “I get them too.”
You nod in response, unable to think of a single thing to say.
Placing the half empty glass on your bedside table you try to drag your mind to any thought other than that man and the way he held those photos. Shame hooks its fingers into each side of your ribcage and pulls, wrenches you open to fit itself inside.
You did nothing but watch; you stood there and saw him die and you didn’t do a thing.
“Hey.” Jason calls softly, fingers stroking over the back of your hand. “There was nothing you could do.”
Your head snaps up, “What?”
“I read the reports, your witness statement. I’m telling you: there’s not a single thing you could have done that would have prevented it.” Jason folds your palms together, interlocks your fingers. “The only thing you would have done is get yourself killed first.”
The shame still lingers, grabs greedily at the inside of your chest.
Tears bubble up and quickly overflow. You raise your head to meet Jason’s steady gaze even though he blurs into one solid shape, “I feel so guilty.”
Jason tugs you forwards and into his arms, “I know, sweetheart. I know.” He breathes, shifting slightly when you tuck your head into the crook of his neck and start to cry. “It’s not your fault. I promise you, it’s not your fault, there was nothing you could do.”
Rocking you back and forth in his arms Jason waits, endlessly patient. After a few minutes you go quiet and still and he shuffles you smoothly back under the covers; making sure to settle the duvet over your shoulders. Pulling back to leave, you shoot your hand out, grab his arm and whisper his name.
“Please stay with me, Jay.” You mumble, half asleep. “Don’t leave me.”
“I won’t.” He says, moving to sit on the floor right beside you. “I’ll stay until you’re safe.”
You’re a client, Jason knows this, he’s a professional, he’s a bodyguard.
But he feels the solid line between a job and something more begin to blur when you smile, just slightly. Comforted by the fact he’s there with you, that he’ll be with you until you’re safe, until you’re no longer in danger because you witnessed something you shouldn’t have.
That solid line flickers at the edges and there’s a tug in Jason’s chest.
This isn’t good.

Sparks Must Fly to Start a Fire (2/2)
Hellooooo again people. This is the second part as promised! It concludes the small serie, for a grand total of 12.5k words, which is higher than my average if I’m honest 😂 I had so much fun writing this, thanks anon! I hope it was up to your expectations! Enjoy part 2 xx

Warnings: violence, language, a bit of trauma
Day 9
“... There is no development in the case, all search parties came up with nothing. The GCPD now believes the disappearance of the young woman has a direct link to the major leak of incriminating documents that were shared to the DA’s office. The investigation, conducted by commissioner Gordon, might sound the fall of an empire of organized crime in Gotham if it goes through trial…”
“I was supposed to marry Vitto, today” You spoke up with mild boredom over yet another news story about you. You hadn’t realized time had flown this fast ever since you betrayed your family.
“Oh, oh wow” Jason hadn’t expected that. “Why would anyone do that?”
In the last days you had gotten into a semi-comfortable routine. The bickering was still very much present, but the snark had considerably deescalated. You had now tasted every snack he told you regular people ate, even those energy drinks he seemed to like to consume during long drives. You had even taken a cautious liking to the canned soups, which remained the only thing you knew how to make on a stove. Still, you didn’t escape Jason’s mockery everytime you didn’t know how to do something “simple”. You didn’t think you’d ever escape it, no matter what.
“It’s not like I had a choice” You said as a matter of fact, leaning back on the headrest of the car. “Women in my world are either trophies or mothers, depending on whether or not they’re still in their prime”
“Let me guess, you were to be Vitto’s trophy?”
“Bingo”
“How old is he, like 50?” He snorted.
“46” You corrected. “Not that it makes any difference”
Jason gagged. “Guess you dodged a serious bullet there”
“God, marrying that manwhore plagued my nightmares for weeks” You chuckled, looking up at the roof of the car. “Hope he rots in jail once this is over”
“Arranged marriage, uh?” He said, sending you a quick uncomfortable glance. Something akin to remorse flashed very briefly across his face, but it was gone as soon as it came. You only nodded. “Sorry about that”
“Don’t be” You brushed off. “That was essentially their downfall in the end. Half of the reasons why I leaked the documents was to prove to my family I am not a chew toy to throw to the dogs. A power grab was out of the question, especially after one of my distant cousins, Alaina, tried and got gunned down. I thought if I was to get killed, I’d go down trying to be better”
Your words were followed by silence, and you realized you had said too much. You didn’t want or need his pity. You cleared your throat and looked away. Soon enough, Jason pulled into a shady looking motel and stopped the car. You glanced in disgust at the overall state of the motel, thinking about how it was definitely the worst one you had stayed in so far, even if you hadn’t stepped foot in yet. The vacancy sign was flashing against the sunset in the distance, and it gave you serious serial killer vibes.
You grabbed your travel bag from the backseat and followed Jason in. The neons inside were barely functioning, casting a harsh glow on the lobby, if anyone could call it a lobby. The man behind the counter looked up at the sound of the little bell above the door and stood up slowly, showing off the grease stains on his yellowed wife-beater. He gave the impression of being just as crooked as his motel, especially with the creepy grin he gave the both of you, but especially to you. Jason walked up to the counter, unbothered by the general mood of the place.
“Good evening” The clerk greeted with a smoke clouded voice, glancing in between you two. “For an hour or two?”
You grimaced while Jason blinked slowly. Then, he smiled one of his smiles that looked normal, but hid something dangerous when you looked close. You had found yourself on the other end of those more times than not ever since he became your unofficial bodyguard. “Got anything for the night?”
The clerk laughed while you wanted to hit him. Hit them both, actually.
“I like your style, kid” He wrote something on his clipboard before turning around and grabbing a key from the wall. “That’ll be 60”
Jason took out three 20$ bills from his wallet and handed them in exchange for the keys. Jason however leaned further on the counter. “How thick are the walls in there?”
“You sly dog” He chortled, and Jason joined. “Don’t worry, if your girl ain’t much of a screamer nobody will know what you be doing. Here, take that, if you want some more fun”
“Perfect” His lips curled up as he accepted the flyer handed to him. You caught a glimpse of the bright green paper, announcing some kind of escort service. “Thanks”
“Aight kid, room 141. Have fun”
You forced yourself to ignore the lusty eyes he sent your way and snatched the keys from Jason’s hand, hurrying to the room. “What was that?” You hissed under your breath.
“You’re in a place full of suspicious people” He hissed back. “You gotta act suspicious with them or they’ll single you out”
“Did you really have to make it seem like I was a prostitute?” You said as you unlocked the door and pushed it open. You stepped in and let him in, before locking again the door behind him.
“There’s nothing wrong with being…” He trailed off as he halted his steps. His frame blocked the sight of the room for you, so you didn’t know what he was talking about. Was it dirty? Were there rodents? “Oh you must be fucking kidding me”
You finally peeked around him, to see only one bed rather than the two queens he usually asked. He had forgotten this time to ask, and the clerk had naturally insinuated you’d want to be together. How could he have not?
“At least it’s a King bed this time” You sniggered. “More space”
“I’m gonna get it changed” He turned around to go back to the reception desk.
“Wasn’t it you who said not to act suspicious?” You raised a challenging eyebrow. “If you go back there and ask for two beds, won’t that ruin all that acting you did over there?”
He spun around once again, facing you with narrowed eyes. He obviously didn’t like you using his logic against him. “Right.” He then side stepped you and went straight to the windows. He closed the blinds and proceeded to check the walls for… Whatever. He looked strange doing it.
“And right now you’re…” You trailed off, trying to find why he was all but caressing the dirty walls.
“Checking for cameras” He finished, looking inside a lamp. “Those motels sometimes have hidden cameras and the owners resell the tapes on porn sites”
“Oh god” You reacted, horrified. And he had the audacity to paint you off as a criminal, when those kinds of people existed. You thought you would be sick. He paused, sending you what you thought was a concerned glance--but it couldn’t be--before he returned to his examination.
“That’s why I’m making sure there’s none here” He mumbled.
You nodded, then carefully made your way to the bed. Despite the overwhelming scent of cigarettes latched onto the fabric, the sheet seemed relatively clean, at least for the general quality of the establishment. You dropped your bag in front of the dresser beside you and sat on the edge of the bed as Jason finished his inspection.
“All clear” He announced before taking out his gun from his belt and putting it on the nightstand. “You should rest, we won’t stay here too long. Also, if you can avoid the shower, I’d recommend you wait until we are somewhere else”
“I hate it here”
“Yeah well, our disastrous stop to Target has kind of tied our hands, princess” He shrugged, like it was your fault you had been found. “So we gotta settle for even less if you don’t want a redo”
“Will you ever stop calling me that?” You glared at him.
“What, princess?” He asked rhetorically, then paused and pretended to think. “No, no I don’t think so”
“You’re insufferable” You scoffed, climbing up further on the bed.
“I wouldn’t get under the covers either” He warned as you were about to pull back the comforter, totally ignoring your comment on his general attitude. “I doubt they’re washing them real good”
You shuddered in disgust as you instead opted for bringing your knees to your chest, hoping the room wouldn’t get too cold during the night.
Day 10
You didn’t if it was your state still clouded by sleep, or the shock that made you see the scene happen in slow motion.
Jason was waking up, sitting in the bed at a reasonable distance from you as your eyes cracked open. Still, you saw the sequence clearly. His back tensed and his head snapped to the window, then his eyes widened. He reacted in a fraction of second, grabbing his gun on the fly and diving on your side. You had barely the time to register his body colliding with yours that the first machine gun went off. You hit the ground hard, but you didn’t feel anything in the spike of adrenaline and paralyzing fear that surged through you. You could only close your eyes as bullets rained over you, and yet you weren’t even touched by the wood and cotton flying everywhere as his body caged yours in protection. His string of curse was audible above the commotion, which let you know he wasn’t gravely wounded yet. Yet.
There was a pause in the shooting, but your eyes were still ringing so loud you didn’t hear him call your name at first. You opened your eyes, disoriented.
“Hey, hey stay with me” He hurried his words, glancing over his shoulders. “Roll under the bed, don’t come out until I come and get you, and if they try to get you, hit them with anything you find, aim for the head”
You could only nod as he helped you get under the bed, and for one you couldn’t even be bothered to notice how filthy it was under there. You were terrified for you, but also for Jason who would face those people with a handgun only. You just hoped his skills hadn’t been exaggerated, or else it would be bad news for everyone.
There was chatter in between the gun fires, but you couldn’t decipher the voices. You counted there were at least six different tones of shout. However, judging by the familiar smugness of the exchange, you could have sworn it was Jason mocking them and not the other way around. It made you wonder exactly what kind of security he had done if he was taking the time to be smug in a one against five fight. Still, you were glad to have him on your side rather than against you.
“Hey”
You jumped and screamed at the sudden face appearing to your left, but let out a breath of relief when you saw it was Jason. He helped you out from under the bed, his glance shifty in between the door and windows. The room was a mess, he was covered in blood you doubted was his, and he was still on guards.
“So, we need to leave now” He said, already picking up his bag and yours. You noticed a second gun now strapped on his thigh and various new weapons in a utility belt. Where he got that was a mystery, but you didn’t question it. He gently pressed you along the bodies dropped at the threshold of the room and in the hallway until you reached the reception desk. You counted seven bodies. The same creepy clerk was cowering behind his desk, a darker stain on the crotch of his pants. Jason gave him an overall look and sighed, shaking his head. Still, he paused in front of him and dropped the bags.
“You son of a bitch” He chuckled lowly, menacingly. “You sold us out, didn’t you?”
He whined in response, confirming Jason’s suspicion.
“How much did you cash on the tip? 3k? 4k?” He taunted further, tsking in disapproval. “Can’t trust anyone these days”
“Please, I needed the money--”
Jason shot two bullets in his head. “Don’t care”
He turned on his heels and grabbed the bags again, bringing you along as gently as he could. You went outside, but he gestured for you to wait at a good distance from the car. He went over and inspected it, taking two devices off from two different places. Bombs, you figured. He threw the first one through the windows of the reception, then the other, he shot while in the air. An explosion went off, shaking your stance on the ground as the motel’s central area went up in flames.
“Oops, gas leak” He said blandly. “Come on, let’s get out of here”
You climbed in the passenger seat, clutching your now all dusted up bag for support. You needed to hold onto something while you came to terms with the repeated attempts on your life in the last fifteen minutes. Jason drove off, leaving the smoking building off to burn.
“Sorry you had to see that back in the lobby” He spoke when you were far enough.
“It’s fine” You shook your head. “He deserved it”
He blinked, a tiny bit stunned. “Hey are you okay?”
“Should I not be?” It came out weaker than intended. “I’m way in over my head with this”
“No, no, you did the right thing” He tried to reassure you, or that’s what you thought he was trying to do. Either way, it went right over your mental downward spiralling.
“I should have stayed in my lane” You kept mumbling, flexing your fingers on your bag. “I’d still be doing my thing, away from literal murder attempts in crappy motel rooms”
“Hey hey hey” He lifted a hand up. “May I remind you that you’d be married to Vitto fucking Maroni right now if you didn’t go rogue? That thought alone should give you relief”
You let out an uncontrolled laugh. What has your life become?
“Truth is I don’t know what I’m doing” You admitted, your voice cracking. “All I’ve achieved it to piss everyone off”
“Yeah you did piss everyone off, but so do I on a daily basis” He replied, making your frown in confusion. “Sometimes pissing everyone else is the only way to get things going, y’know?”
You blinked a couple of times. “I literally don’t”
He opened his mouth to reply, then closed it immediately. He then took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts. “All I’m saying is, doing the right thing is an ugly job. It’s hard and messy and fucks with you, but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try and do it anyway. I know this is all new for you, and this is a rather harsh welcome party, but you gotta fight through it”
You nodded, casting your eyes on him at last. His skin was reddened by the drying blood on his face and hair, and his clothes were dirty and torn. Amidst the cooling blood, you noticed a steady flow of brighter red coming off a hole in the sleeve of his t-shirt, widening the already big stain around it.
“You’re bleeding”
He looked down at his side, unfazed. “Oh right, a bullet got me on the initial wave”
“We need to get it out and close the wound” Your eyes found his for a brief second, before his glance returned to the road.
“It can wait” He downplayed it, probably by a force of habit.
“It looks like it’s bleeding a lot” You insisted.
“I’ll be fine--”
“It’s my fault you’re hurt” You interrupted him. You felt like you had at least to do something for him, especially since he just saved your life twice. Besides, you needed to focus on something else than what had just gone down. “Let me help”
He took a deep breath, then gave a little nod. He pulled over at the next gas station and parked the car, then went to his trunk, picking his first aid kit while you went to ask for the bathroom key. You joined him at the car and went to find the bathroom in the back of the building, locking the door behind you for privacy. You stood beside him as he rummaged through it, handing you a pair of pliers and disinfecting gauzes. You waited for him to take off his jacket, laying your supplies on the counter, then carefully rolled the sleeve of his t-shirt. You grabbed a clean gauze to stop the bleeding, gently pressing on the wound.
“Have you done this before?”
You didn’t see his question come, but you answered nonetheless. “Yes, a few times” You said. “On my older brothers. That’s something we learn, just in case we are the ones to patch up our husbands”
“Is this really how you were treated?” He asked, his voice surprisingly soft compared to what you had gotten so far. “Like a service wife in training?”
“Pretty much” You nodded with a weak scoff. You carefully checked the wound, and the bleeding had almost stopped. You grabbed the alcohol gauze and tore the pack open. “There isn’t much choice but to obey”
He didn’t even flinch when you cleaned the wound. “When I pulled the gun on you the first day we met, you said it wasn’t the first time somebody did that to you” He began, recalling the events from ten days ago. “What happened the other times?”
You put the bloodied gauzes aside and grabbed the pliers, disinfecting them with a smaller alcohol wipe before going for the bullet. “Would you believe me if I said something along the lines of wildly opposing my union to the Maroni family?”
His lips curled up slightly, but his teeth were clenched as you tried to grab the bullet well lodged in his flesh. You managed to get a good grip on it and slowly pulled it out. You immediately covered the wound again with clean gauze and dropped the bullet in the trash pile.
“Bullet’s intact, you should be fine” You said, holding the gauze with one hand and searching for a needle and a stitching thread with the other.
“How old were you when it happened?”
You paused, staring at his arm. How old were you back then, when your father announced you’d be part of a two-way deal with the Maroni family? Not very old, that was for sure. You pulled the gauze away and sanitized the needle, then passed the thread in the loop. “17, I think”
“You were just a child” It came out more like a statement than a question. You shrugged before beginning the stitches. He still wasn’t flinching as the needle came in and out of his skin, making it easier for you to do a clean job. You finally tied the thread and cut it with the scissors he handed you.
“I’m sorry I pulled you into this mess” You apologized as you wrapped the wound with yet some other clean gauze and bandaged it. “I… I didn’t plan this through at all. I felt the doors close on me and I acted without even thinking of the real consequences. I thought I would be strong enough to go with it, turns out I’m not”
You had been all bark and no bite, you could see that now. You came in strong, acting like nothing could get to you, like the threat was just an imaginary bound to keep you in place. You made a bold move to cross it, and now you could clearly see how dangerous the waters you were threading in actually were. It wasn’t child’s play anymore, it was real, and you caved under the pressure on your first real trial.
He turned around as he pulled his sleeve down, facing you. He was in your space, but it didn’t feel like all the other times. His presence wasn’t threatening. “You don't have to apologize” There was something genuine in his eyes. “And to pull off what you did needs strength, even if you don’t realize it yet. Your reaction to almost being killed doesn’t change that fact”
“It certainly doesn’t feel that way”
“Trust me, princess” His little teasing smile returned. “Someone who can hold her own against me like you did is not weak”
“I was just mean” You blinked in surprise, letting out a small chuckle. “I think that’s different”
“See, still arguing” His smile widened. You had known him for ten days, but you had gotten used to him being a certain way. This light and sincere attitude he had now was, to say the least, unusual for you. When he wasn’t constantly sneering, you noticed his features better. His blue eyes carried a kind spark, the type you found in a natural caretaker. The harsh angles of his jaw and cheekbones shaped a handsome face, decorated by little silver scars blending with his freckles. He was like a fallen angel shining through a broken halo, dangerous and protective, but only if you took the time to look past the burned wings. The unflattering white light of the bathroom made him look worn out, but it didn’t change anything to the raw beauty of his face. His bloody knuckles came in soft contact with your cheek, like a feather gliding on a cloud in the sky. His eyes never left yours, and even if they did, you felt like you’d follow them whichever direction they went.
He was tall, considerably so. He hovered over you like a safety blanket, your own shield from the dangers stalking you outside the door. At that moment, you had trouble understanding how his proximity had once filled you with so much unease you felt like hiding away, because all you could feel now was an all consuming calm. There was however a pulse that was alive, one that was begging you to get closer. He seemed to have felt it too; his movement was slow, letting you more than enough time to back off. As his lips slowly got closer to yours, you know you didn’t want to move away. You filled the distance separating you from him and met him there in a gentle kiss to test the water first.
It didn’t take long for you to lose control. All the emotion of the last days that had bottled up were let to run wild in between you two like an electric current, surrendering your every sense to him. Your hands went to the back of his neck for support, because god knew you needed it. His arms sneaked behind your back as he pushed further into you, quickening the pace of the kiss and clouding your mind. Tongues battled in a war that was already won, knowing in one way or another he’d be the victor. You could feel all the tension, all the frustration, all the anger and all the guilt coming in strong before burning like dry wood in a bonfire. Were there any versions of this that didn’t end where you were? It seemed impossible.
You didn’t want to open your eyes just yet when he pulled away, reluctant to even let go. He captured your lips in a couple of kisses before fully letting you catch your breath.
“Well” His voice was barely over a whisper over the panting. “That might be one way to settle an argument”
“Then I might pick more arguments” Your lips lifted in a small grin.
“And I might not object to that” His eyes were bright with amusement. “Besides, I might have gotten around to like that smart mouth of yours”
“Oh, have you now?”
“Might” He corrected.
“Sure” For the first time in what felt like forever, you actually smiled. You slowly retracted your arms from his neck, letting him stand straight again.
“Come on, let’s get out of here and put as much distance as we can from this motel” He said, but it lacked the patronizing tone it once contained. It was even like he didn’t actually want to leave just yet, but had to, or both of your safety. You shared the sentiment.
You packed the first aid kit and burned the bloody gauzes in the sink, then killed the fire and returned the key to the counter. You drove away shortly after, confident things might just be alright this time.
Day 16
You had circled back to the first place you had stayed in, the little cabin so far in the woods you were almost sure nobody would find you, or at least not yet.
Jason had told you he had installed security devices on the dirt road to make sure he was aware of anybody driving up, as well as the traps he had set in the woods. Once again, it reinforced your idea that his job experience might not have been a traditional one. You frankly didn’t mind, as you were in no position to judge a potential criminal past. Besides, you believed anything he did couldn’t be worse than what your family or the Maronis did on a daily basis.
You had woken up when the sun was already high in the sky, and to your surprise Jason had still been there, on his back and staring at the ceiling. When you had turned around on your side, he had mimicked you to come face to face with you, not talking at all. His wound on his arm had stopped bleeding during the night, for which you were thankful for. It eased your guilt to see it was healing well. You had stayed there for what seemed like hours, but it was comfortable.
“I meant to ask,” He began, his voice soft and husky from the morning. “Why did you go to Bruce with the leak?”
You blinked slowly, tilting your head slightly to the side. “Well, I couldn’t go to the police, it was out of the question. I couldn’t trust any of them to pursuit this case”
“But what made you trust Bruce in particular?”
“I… I like to listen when people talk. Before, it gave me the impression I was part of the family business and not just an accessory, and that way I got to hear bits and parts of the discussions conducted behind closed doors” You began. “More times than not I would hear how Wayne Enterprises projects got in the way of their plans, and how Bruce Wayne would always do something to undermine them legally. So after I stole the intel, there was really one way I was certain would yield results, one person I was certain would have all the interests in the world to see this trial happen”
“That’s…” He trailed off, an impressed expression on his face. “That’s surprisingly smart”
“Surprisingly?” You raised an eyebrow.
“For someone who had no idea how to use a can opener, that is”
You slapped his chest as he let out a laugh; he was so proud of his joke. “Hey, I learned!”
“I know, I know” He chuckled, reaching his hand and brushing a rogue hair strand away from your face. You had noticed as the days passed that he seemed to favor the little touches and the unspoken rather than obvious and obnoxious displays. You knew he was more of the quiet type when he wasn’t arguing with you, always working in his corner and doing his stuff. It hadn’t really changed ever since the gas station moment, but this time he would steal little glances, brush his hand against yours when he’d change gears in the car, or make sure he took out a bowl for you as well when you made your canned soup. “You adapted better than I thought you would, considering the entire lifestyle change you had to go through in the last two weeks”
“I didn’t have much choice, did I?” You grinned.
“Nope, not at all, princess” He pushed himself on his elbows and leaned down to kiss you. You smiled onto his lips, welcoming the slow movements of him against you. However, you gently pushed him back after a moment, knowing if he had it his way, you’d stay there for hours.
“Jason” You said his name when he was visibly trying to distract you again with butterfly kisses on your jaw, only pausing to give you wide, innocent eyes. Insufferable. “I have to go take a shower”
“I’ll come with” He shrugged.
“What?”
“Yeah” He nodded. “Listen. You hired me to protect you, so that’s what I’m going to do”
“From what?” You laughed at his serious tone.
“Water’s cold”
“So NOW you want to protect me from the cold water?” You raised an eyebrow. “That surely wasn’t the discourse you held two weeks ago”
“People change, princess” He sighed exaggeratedly before getting up and walking to your side of the bed. “Come on, you said it yourself, you’ve got a shower to take”
You rolled your eyes, but nonetheless accepted the hand he held out for you. You went to the bathroom and undressed, then managed to get into the relatively small shower, your back to Jason. He was so tall he actually shielded you from the water from the showerhead when he turned the shower on, getting all the burning cold on his back instead.
“See?” He chuckled. “No cold water”
“But how will I wash myself if the water doesn’t get to me?” You asked, looking at him over your shoulder. He stared blankly at you, like he didn’t think of that.
“Let me worry about it” He dismissed, making you laugh.
“Alright, alright”
He began slowly rubbing your skin with his wet hands, spreading water indirectly. His fingertips were still cold, but you knew for a fact it was slightly better than the direct flow from the tap. Goosebumps erupted all over your arms and back, both from the sudden change of temperature and his touch. You closed your eyes, enjoying the contrast in between the water and his still warm chest. He wet your hair, combing it with his hands, before he put the shampoo in and made it lather. Immediately, you recognized the smell.
“Is this your shampoo?” You asked, your eyes opening.
“Mhh”
“I thought you didn’t like when people used your stuff”
“Technically, I’m using it”
“Still!” You replied. “You practically threatened me last time I dared wear your shampoo”
“Truth is” He leaned in, his lips almost pressed against your ear. “It kinda drove me hog fucking wild to have you prancing around smelling like me”
Your eyes widened and the back of your neck heated enough for you to warm the water dripping down your back. You gulped, unable to answer that as it came as a shock for you that you have had another effect on him aside from pissing him off. He chuckled at your lack of comeback, his hot breath fanning your jaw. He slowly rinsed the soap out of your hair, then began washing your skin. His hands massaged your muscles as they went, making you sigh in contentment. At this point, you had backed so much into him you were just as much subject to the direct contact of the water as him, but you didn’t care.
He trailed small kisses from behind your ears down to your shoulder before pausing there, as if he was hesitant. He lifted his head slightly, and you could see his stare right on you from your peripheral vision.
“I need to tell you something”
You were surprised by the sudden seriousness of his words, but you tilted your head to show him you were listening.
“I’m the Red Hood”
You blinked slowly, registering his words. Well, that certainly explained things. You even wondered how you didn’t see it sooner, but now that he mentioned it, it had been rather obvious. “... Congratulations?”
You could feel he wasn’t expecting this reaction. “That’s… That’s all?” He stuttered. “You’re okay with that?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?” You turned your head to look at him properly. “You saved my life so many times, I am not about to complain how you did it”
“But I did a lot of bad too,” He argued. “Some things that might change your opinion”
“You’re seriously asking me, who comes from a crime family, if I’m okay with you doing crimes?” You deadpanned. His face changed, as if he was reevaluating his entire argument.
“When you put it like this…” He trailed off, nodding. You could however see the relief in his eyes at your acceptance of his double identity. Especially with the kind of job he was doing here with you, you could only imagine how blurred the line in between the two personas must have been at times.
“Why did you tell me?” It was a gentle question, full of wonder as to what pushed him to reveal to you such an important, personal detail about himself. Your hand sneaked up and covered his still on your forearm.
“I thought you should know” He muttered back, his voice barely rising over the noise of the water hitting the shower’s floor. “You never asked what I did before, or how I took care of seven hired guns at the motel. I wasn’t sure if you just avoided it, or…”
“Don’t worry” You interrupted him softly. “Moral compasses are no issues with me”
His lips reached yours under a freezing rain, your bodies numb to anything but each other.
Day 25
A few days ago Jason received a call from Bruce.
The arrests had been made and the trial date had been set. As you had predicted, they tried to keep the relative information about it under wraps so you wouldn’t be aware it was happening. But fortunately, with Bruce’s quiet oversight of the process, he had managed to relay the details on time. You hadn’t been very far from Gotham when the news dropped, but you were still thankful for the heads up. It had given you time to plan your safe return into the boundaries of the city, staying hidden in another one of Jason’s safehouses until the day came for you to be a witness in the trial.
It was now in progress, it had just started some minutes ago. You were staying in an adjacent room that was guarded by people under Bruce’s paycheck, with Jason laying on a couch behind you, looking at his phone while you were getting ready. You were thankful that you had brought a second designer outfit with you, because you weren’t sure your gray t-shirt from Target with the oversized men’s pants you inherited on your first day with Jason would have looked very professional or credible. You did your makeup carefully with the basic products you had, then took a look at yourself in the mirror. You smothered the creases in your blouse and made sure the belt wasn’t twisted in the loops of your slacks, and sighed.
Jason stood up from the couch and walked to you, stopping behind you and sneaking an arm around your waist. He snuggled his nose in the crook of your neck and placed a small kiss there. “Am I an asshole for thinking you look better in a 30 bucks outfit?”
You laughed despite your nervous state. He was trying to distract you and you welcomed it. “Not more than usual, no”
He gasped at your rebuttal, but you could see the amusement in his eyes. “Is that what you really think of me?” He asked. “I’m hurt”
“Aw, come here” You pouted, turning your chin over your shoulder. You raised your arm to rest your hand on his cheek and gently pulled him down into a kiss. Your eyes fluttered close when his lips met yours, letting your relish in his comforting presence. You felt your heartbeat slow down as you sighed against his lips, wishing to remain there with him for another hour or so. Alas, the moment was broken shortly after when the door opened.
“They will soon be--oh”
You pulled back from the kiss, but Jason didn’t move away at the sound of Bruce’s voice behind you. You could feel he was annoyed at his adoptive father ruining the mood, but at least he wasn’t pissed like you had seen he could be on day one. That in itself was a relief.
“Am I interrupting something?”
“No, not at all” Jason replied in a clearly sarcastic tone. You stifled back a laugh at the grimace he was doing to mock Bruce. “Perfect timing as usual”
Bruce didn’t answer that. He only closed the door behind him and headed for the desk, leaning back on it. Jason followed his movements in the mirror like a hawk.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad you aren’t at each other’s throat anymore” He began, a cryptic smile on his lips. “But I hadn’t expected… Whatever this is”
It was Jason’s turn to sigh as he reluctantly parted away from you. He didn’t go far, however. He stayed by your side like another threat on your life could pop up at any moment. “Shocker”
“As I was saying” Bruce reprised, ignoring Jason’s side comment. “They will call you to the stand soon. I just wanted to check up on you and see if you had any questions or concerns before you go out”
“How solid is the case built?” You asked.
“It should hold” He nodded. “From what I’ve seen, it’s solid in front of a jury. Your testimony will have to be conclusive if we want to catch some Maroni members in the lot, but I’m confident you’ll be stellar”
You gave him a small smile. You knew your father would be there, glaring at you like you were the devil itself, but you repeated to yourself you could go through this. There was no way he would be as intimidating as Jason in the first few days, and you came out on the other side unscathered. He couldn’t hurt you anymore, and soon he would reap what he sowed.
“How secure will the witness booth be?” It was Jason who spoke this time, his eyes straight on Bruce like he was challenging him to give an answer that wouldn’t be good enough.
“The two guards in front of this room will accompany her in the courtroom” Bruce replied calmly. “There will also be one more guarding the door, and I supposed you won’t be far as well”
He only hummed in answer, but he seemed satisfied with this plan. Bruce checked his watch and stood up, hands in his pocket.
“It’s time”
You nodded, exhaling a shaky breath. You exited the room with Jason at your side and the guards behind you. You walked down a few hallways before you stopped in front of the witness booth door. You forced yourself to take deep breaths and visualize the end result. You could do this, you could do this.
“Keep your head high, stay confident” Jason muttered in your ear as the door opened in front of you. “You got this, princess”
With his last words of encouragement, you were brought into the courtroom.
Day 101
“... The sentence of the twelve convicted has dropped this morning on the order of judge Monroe, a little less than three months after the devastating trial that landed a blow on organized crime in Gotham. The twelve men will each serve a sentence ranging from twenty to forty years in a maximum security facility, on counts of attempted murders, first degree homicide, money laundering, drug trafficking and tax fraud. Amongst the convicted is Vitto Maroni, a notable figure in Gotham’s public life…”
You jumped when a loud pop dragged your attention away from the TV.
Jason was standing there with a proud grin, pouring foaming sparkling grape juice in two champagne flutes. You laughed as he handed you one, plopping next to you on the couch and clinking his glass on yours.
“Cheers to a victory,” He declared. “that wouldn’t have been possible without you”
“Don’t flatter me too much, give yourself some credit” You matched his grin. “You’re at least 20% responsible for this”
“Ah yes, my 20% contribution” He nodded thoughtfully. “Eighteen percent bullets shot, two percent bullets received I recall”
You laughed with him, drinking the fizzy beverage. He lifted his arm, and you crawled under it to snuggle on his side, careful not to spill anything. It had become a habit for you to end up one way or another in his arms, even after the trial ended. He had offered you to move in with him shortly after, when you had tried to give him the ten thousand dollars you had promised him after the trial. Not only had he refused to even look at it, but he gave you back the 5k you had already given him beforehand. He had insisted for you to keep it and invest in whatever you wanted to turn your life around like you wished.
He had been excited for you when you announced you would enroll in law school, saying your argumentative side would definitely come handy as an attorney.
“I’m proud of you”
You looked up at him to see a fond glint in his eyes, one that made your heart melt. For all of his rough edges, he was certainly very soft inside. All he wanted was for you to be safe and happy, and you couldn’t ask for someone better to start your new life with. You snuggled further into him as he kissed the top of your head and tightened his arm around you.
“Thank you for being there for me” You mumbled through his clothes. “It means a lot”
“I couldn’t walk away from you even if I wanted to, princess” He smiled against your hair. “You are so stuck with me”
“Good thing I’m not going anywhere, then”
You changed the channel to a movie and spent the rest of the night cuddling on the couch, you wearing his t-shirt and shampoo and him holding you like a treasure.

I Will be Your Tim Drake for Tonight (4) (Jason Todd/ Reader)
Summary: Preferring to do anything but your physics project, you decide to accepts Tim’s proposal. It’s simple. He does your project, you try to figure out whether Jason Sionis is criminal. Easy, right?
masterlist
A/n: This takes place in a world where Jason is adopted by Black Mask. Inspired by Building Interest by Zoeleo. The events and characterization in this story are very heavily based on Zoeleo's Long Term Investment series. It is fantastic and I really highly recommend all of her fics.
a/n: For clarification, Reader does have psychic powers but it only lets her sense people's emotions physically. No mind-reading. Her power is more like an overactive sense of empathy which may force her to dissociate into someone else.
There will be violence and mentions of alcoholism (used as coping mechanism for physical pain) and chronic pain.
As for the additional warning, an animal is harmed but it is barely described. I could not bring myself to actual describe it but the aftermath is described.
I also just converted this from an OC so I apologize for any grammatical mistakes.
Without further a do:
The car ride was awkward, to say the least, and disastrous to some unholy degree. Dick had insisted on calling you while you were driving, not really taking into account that you might need navigation on the way to the hospital(a place you avoid like the plague on a normal day). Moral support he said. You understand though. It wasn't obvious but all of them got a bit clingy when one of them was kidnapped. Dick was just the most obvious. Bruce scolded you. Alfred insisted you should rest but, in your opinion, 2 days was enough resting. Cass and Dick were practically koala bears when you got home. They probably held you for hours and even when your skin pricked, you let them. Tim offered to put a tracker in your favorite earnings which you declined because you didn't want to find out whether Bruce had already put trackers in there. Damian actually offered to go with you. It was sweet but you declined. You were tempted but you knew if you let Damian come with, Dick would insist on going then Cass then Tim then maybe Batcow or something. You had no intention of suffocating Jason.
His bodyguard, Reggie, looked like he had every intention to suffocate you.
“Uh hi- I'm Tim. I-” I'm Jason's abduction buddy. But how does one say that without getting socked in the face by a man who can bench press 10 of you?
"I'm Jason's friend(?)." you squeak with the utmost sincerity you can muster. Reggie's brow ticks up in response. Fuck.
Reggie leans down, getting in your face. You could feel your skin begin to prick. If you were Dick, you'd be able to pirouette over this easy (or make it 10 times worse).
"Reggie just let him in you fucking tightwad" Jason shouts from the other side of the door.
You slip in as smoothly as you could trying to hide your giddiness. "Hey pretty boy, you look like hell." You say with a light jovial tone almost saying it like a laugh as you nudge past the crowd of dogs. How the hell did they get dogs in here?
"Aw, you say that to all the injured rich assholes you meet!"
"I know Dick Grayson! I have standards." You protest handing him a bouquet of get well flowers.
Jason stares at the flowers with a pinched brow, mouth twisted into something unreadable. "I'm surprised you wanted to talk to me again. " He says, voice wavering. "Most people don't react well to getting kidnapped."
You’ve been through worse but you still have nightmares about it. "I've- " You shrug " Not your fault." You sit down to pet the dog nudging your leg. The dog by your leg looks exactly like Lizzie. Your heart sinks. It's not like he wanted to be kidnapped. Not like he wanted you to even be there in the alley. None of it was his fault as far as you knew. Your mouth pulls to one side not. It's pursed, deep in thought. You look up at eyes bright and focused, unlike the last time you met. You look at him dead serious as if you were gonna tell him something really important. Maybe you should say something meaningful like condolences for Lizzie or Is Box ok?
"Ok, fine, I wanted to see your dogs."
"Fuck!" He belts out laughing. "My ribs still hurt damn it. Don't make me laugh!"
"As a fellow rich asshole, I am offended that you did not expect that of me. " you really try not to smile but something about how his rugged face tugs into a smile makes your chest warm up. And that laugh! Now in the quiet of a hospital room with only the whirring of machines as accompaniment, you could now appreciate the dulcet tones of his voice. It was rough from fatigue but it still sounded velve-
Shit. You sound like Dick.
"I got you a get-well present by the way. "
You sputter tossing him the bag realizing too late that that was probably a bad idea to throw things at a sick person.
"You really didn't have to…." He said sheepishly.
He opens the bag. It's a copy of Tales of Earthsea.
"I heard through the grapevine that you liked books,"
"You did, huh?" He asks clearly skeptical but amused by the lie. No, you found out through research. You really should have checked what kind of books he was into but he doesn't seem annoyed by the choice.
"Stalker," he snorts his face pulling into a cocky grin.
You like this side of him as well. He was cute either way. You had to stop giving Dick shit about pretty faces.
"Thanks…"
"(Y/n). It's (y/n)."
“Here I thought your name really was Tom.”
“Nope.”
“You gonna tell me why you were dressed up as Tim?”
Pulling out a pack of cards, “Depends how good are you at poker?”
He tilts his head making those blue eyes shine and gives you a heart-stopping grin.
You really hope Bruce was wrong about him.
If that was the case, so much for giving Bruce shit about his type.

NO MEANS NO
———
The drive to the set was quiet, tension filling the air like static. You drummed your fingers nervously on the edge of your seat, stealing glances at Jason every now and then. He hadn’t said much since you left the apartment, but you could feel the weight of his presence, steady and solid. The shoot today was different—more provocative than you were used to—and the idea of it was gnawing at your nerves.
“You good?” Jason’s deep voice broke through your thoughts, startling you.
You gave him a tight smile, nodding. “Yeah, just… you know. A bit nervous.”
Jason glanced over at you, his brow furrowing slightly. “It’s just a shoot. You’ve done this a million times.”
You sighed, chewing on your bottom lip. “I know. But this one’s a bit more… raunchy.”
Jason’s grip on the steering wheel tightened imperceptibly, his jaw clenching. “You don’t have to do anything you’re not comfortable with.”
“I know, but it’s part of the job.” You shrugged, trying to play it off, though the butterflies in your stomach refused to settle. “It’ll be fine. Just… more skin than usual.”
Jason didn’t say anything, but you could tell he wasn’t thrilled. His protective side had always been strong, but when it came to you, it seemed to go into overdrive. As much as you appreciated it, there were times—like now—when it felt like too much—this was just your job. But you couldn’t deny that a part of you found comfort in knowing he was there, watching your back.
By the time you reached the set, the pit in your stomach had grown, but you pushed it down, slipping into professional mode. The lights, the crew, the chaos—it was all familiar territory. You could do this.
Jason lingered on the outskirts, his eyes following your every move as the makeup artist prepped you and the director went over the shots. He looked more on edge than usual, and you could tell it was because of the male model standing way too close, rehearsing a scene that involved a little too much contact for Jason’s liking.
As the camera started rolling, you could feel Jason’s gaze burning into you. The male model’s hands grazed your waist as he leaned in for the shot, and you could practically hear Jason grinding his teeth. His jealousy was palpable, a simmering tension that made your own nerves feel even more frayed.
After a few more takes, the director finally called for a break. You stepped off the stage, relief washing over you—until the director approached.
“Alright, for this next shot, we’re gonna need you to strip down to your underwear,” he said, his tone casual as if he was asking you to grab coffee.
You froze. “I’m not comfortable with that.”
The director sighed, clearly annoyed. “Come on, everyone does it. It’s just for the video.”
You shook your head firmly. “I said no.”
Before you could take another step back, he grabbed your arm, his grip tight. “Don’t be difficult. You’re not that special.”
That’s when everything happened in a blur. Jason was there in an instant, his hand locking around the director’s wrist, pulling him away from you with a force that left the director stumbling. Jason’s face was a mask of barely-contained fury.
“The lady said no,” Jason growled, his voice low and dangerous.
You stepped back, heart pounding, but the moment Jason was between you and the director, you felt a surge of relief. He stood like a wall, his broad shoulders blocking you from the world, and in that moment, you were grateful for every inch of that protectiveness.
The director’s face twisted in anger. “You can’t just—”
“I don’t care who you think you are,” Jason interrupted, his voice icy. “She’s not doing anything she doesn’t want to do. Got it?”
The director straightened, his chest puffing out as he tried to regain control of the situation. “I’ll have you fired.”
Jason smirked, his eyes cold. “Try it.”
You stepped forward, placing a hand on Jason’s arm, feeling the tension rippling through his muscles. “Jay, it’s fine. Let’s just go.”
Jason’s gaze flicked down to you, softening slightly, but his grip on the director didn’t loosen. “He shouldn’t have touched you,” Jason muttered, still seething.
The director huffed, waving his hand dismissively. “Whatever. Go ahead and leave, both of you. You’re done here.”
Jason released him, stepping back but keeping himself between you and the director as he led you out of the set. The ride home was tense, Jason’s knuckles white on the steering wheel, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. Neither of you spoke, the adrenaline still thrumming in your veins.
———
When you finally reached your apartment, Jason hovered by the door, guilt flickering across his face. “I shouldn’t have blown up like that,” he muttered, glancing down.
You shook your head, stepping closer. “No, Jason, thank you. No one’s ever stood up for me like that before.”
Jason looked at you, his eyes searching yours. For a moment, the world felt quiet, the tension between you from earlier lingering but now mixed with something else—something deeper.
“I’m just doing my job,” Jason said softly, but his usual cocky tone was absent.
You smiled, your hand brushing lightly against his arm. “Well, you’re pretty good at it.”
Jason’s lips twitched into a small, rare smile as he looked down at you. “I just… I don’t like seeing people take advantage of you.”
His voice was low, rough with emotion he wasn’t used to showing. The space between you felt impossibly small, your heart pounding in your chest as you took in the way he was looking at you—protective, but something more. Something that made your breath hitch.
Your hand lingered on his arm, fingers brushing his bicep, the tension between you thickening. Jason took a step closer, closing the distance, his breath warm against your skin. His eyes flickered down to your lips, and for a moment, everything around you faded. It was just the two of you, standing in your dimly lit apartment, the air charged with unspoken words and possibilities.
Just as Jason leaned in, your phone buzzed loudly in your pocket, jolting you both out of the moment.
You blinked, startled, quickly pulling it out. Harley’s name flashed on the screen, her timing as impeccable as ever. You let out a sigh, holding the phone up for Jason to see. “It’s Harley.”
Jason exhaled sharply, shaking his head with a grin that was both amused and frustrated. “Of course it is.”
You answered the call, trying to ignore the heat still simmering between you and Jason. “Hey, Harley.”
“Babydoll!” Harley’s voice crackled through the speaker. “Just checkin’ in to see if you’re okay after that scumbag director tried to pull a fast one on ya. I swear, next time we’re gonna break his kneecaps, Gotham-style!”
You chuckled softly, glancing over at Jason, who was standing by the door now, arms crossed but eyes still locked on you. “I’m fine, Harley. Jason handled it.”
“Good ol’ Jaybird,” Harley chimed in, her voice loud enough for Jason to hear. “Always knowin’ how to make a statement. Anyway, just wanted to make sure you’re alright. Ivy’s threatening to plant rotten prawns in that director’s office. We’ll keep you posted!”.
You thanked her and hung up, sliding your phone back into your pocket. Jason’s gaze was still on you, but the intensity of the moment had been interrupted. He ran a hand through his hair, clearly still on edge from earlier.
“Well, Harley has your back too, it seems,” Jason muttered with a soft smirk, though his eyes were still stormy with everything unsaid.
You walked over to him, standing close enough that you could feel the heat radiating off his body. “Seems like I’ve got a whole team looking out for me.”
Jason’s expression softened. “You do. Always.”
For a moment, neither of you spoke, the weight of the evening hanging in the air. Finally, Jason exhaled, his hand brushing your arm lightly before he stepped back. “I should go. You need rest after today.”
You nodded, though part of you wished he would stay. “Yeah, You’re probably right,” you said softly, even though you didn’t want him to leave. The warmth of his presence was comforting, and the thought of being alone after everything that happened on set felt unsettling.
Jason lingered by the door, hesitating for a moment. He looked at you, his expression unreadable, a mix of concern and something more that neither of you seemed ready to voice. “If you need anything, you know where to find me.”
You nodded, offering him a small smile. “Thanks, Jay.”
He took a step toward the door, hand resting on the knob, but before he could open it, he turned back. His eyes met yours again, and for a split second, the tension from earlier resurfaced, thick and undeniable.
“Listen,” Jason began, his voice lower now, as if he was struggling to find the right words. “About earlier… I didn’t mean to overstep. I just—” He paused, jaw tightening. “I care about you. I don’t want anyone hurting you or pushing you around.”
Your heart skipped a beat at his words, and you took a step closer to him. “I know, Jason. And I’m really glad you were there.”
For a moment, you both just stood there, the weight of everything between you hanging in the air like a taut string about to snap. Jason’s eyes flicked down to your lips, but instead of leaning in, Jason just nodded, his usual cocky demeanour softened by something more vulnerable. “Get some rest,” he said, voice gruff. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
With that, he opened the door and stepped out into the hallway, leaving you standing in the quiet of your apartment, heart still racing from the closeness of the moment you’d almost shared.
As the door clicked shut, you let out a breath you didn’t realise you were holding, feeling the lingering warmth of his presence and the unspoken promise of something more hanging in the air.
Whatever was building between you and Jason—it wasn’t over yet.
————
Jason sat on the edge of a bench outside the coffee shop, absently stirring a cold brew in his hand. The morning sun was just starting to peek through the clouds, casting a warm glow on the world around him. There was a nagging feeling of conflict settled in his stomach.
“Earth to Jay!” Roy called, approaching with his usual exuberance, a bright grin plastered on his face. “You look like you just got hit by a truck. Or maybe you finally got your ass kicked by a squirrel?”
Jason rolled his eyes. “Funny as always, Roy.”
“What’s eating you? It’s not like you to be so… contemplative.” Roy leaned against the railing, his posture relaxed but his eyes keen.
“I think I’m falling for her,” Jason admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.
Roy’s eyes widened in exaggerated shock. “Wait, you mean you’re actually having feelings? That’s a plot twist I wasn’t prepared for!”
“Shut up,” Jason muttered, rubbing the back of his neck. “I mean it. I really like her, but I’m supposed to be protecting her, not… I don’t know, trying to date her…I’m not right for her anyway...”
“Ah, the classic ‘I can’t love you because I’m a tortured soul with a dark past’ dilemma,” Roy said, shaking his head as he feigned seriousness. “How original”.
“Dude, it’s not a joke,” Jason snapped. “What if something happens to her because I’m too close? I can’t stand the thought of her getting hurt.”
Roy raised an eyebrow, the teasing tone softening. “You’re a good guy, Jay. You’re going to protect her regardless of whether you’re dating her or not. And besides, wouldn’t you rather have her close? You know, where you can keep an eye on her and shower her with affection?”
“Right, because that’s not going to complicate things at all,” Jason retorted, crossing his arms.
“Complicated? Please, that’s the foundation of every great romance!” Roy grinned, leaning in conspiratorially. “Besides, have you seen how she looks at you? Like you’re the last cookie in the jar, and she’s ready to fight anyone for a bite.”
Jason couldn’t help but chuckle at the image. “That’s… oddly specific.”
“Hey, I’ve been known to get creative with my analogies,” Roy shrugged, then turned serious again. “Look, if you really care about her, you owe it to yourself to figure this out. Don’t push her away just because you’re scared. That’s the kind of thing that leads to a lifetime of regret.”
“Yeah, but what if I screw it all up?” Jason sighed, looking away. “What if I’m not enough?”
Roy placed a hand on Jason’s shoulder, giving it a reassuring squeeze. “Look, you’re a total dork, but you’re also one of the best guys I know. If she makes you happy, go for it. Just make sure you bring your A-game. I expect romantic gestures, flowers, maybe a serenade?”
Jason laughed, shaking his head. “No serenades. I’d rather face a horde of angry thugs.”
“Suit yourself, but just know that I’ll be expecting updates. And I’ll also be taking notes for my own love life,” Roy said, grinning. “So, when’s the first date?”
“I don’t know,” Jason admitted. “But I’ll figure it out. Just… thanks for the pep talk, man.”
“Anytime, buddy. Just remember: love is like coffee. Sometimes it’s bitter, sometimes it’s sweet, but in the end, it’ll keep you awake at night thinking about it.”
Jason chuckled, shaking his head again. “You really are full of shit, you know that?”
“Yep! But at least I’m your shit,” Roy said, winking. “Now, go make a move, Romeo.”

Summary: “You know,” you began, smirking as you watched him, “I didn’t think ‘tech genius’ was part of your job description. Thought you just hit things”. Jason paused, glancing over his shoulder at you, a hint of amusement in his eyes. “I can do both. Multi-talented.”
Warnings: None. A little bit of flirty banter. Family dynamics.

SKYNET AND CONSPIRACIES
———
The apartment was calm, the usual city noise outside fading into the background. You leaned against the doorway, watching as Jason crouched by the wall, sleeves rolled up to his elbows, installing the new security system. He had been at it for a while, his focus intense as he worked the wires, his movements precise and confident. It was hard not to be impressed—he seemed to handle tech with the same ease that he handled a gun or a motorcycle.
“You know,” you began, smirking as you watched him, “I didn’t think ‘tech genius’ was part of your job description. Thought you just hit things.”
Jason paused, glancing over his shoulder at you, a hint of amusement in his eyes. “I can do both. Multi-talented.”
You grinned, stepping closer to peek over his shoulder. “So this thing won’t turn into Skynet and take over my life, right?”
Jason snorted, shaking his head as he continued to work. “You really gotta stop watching those conspiracy videos.”
“They’re all true, though,” you shot back, folding your arms. “Besides, I’ll bet one of your brothers agrees with me.”
Jason’s hand stilled for a moment, then he scowled, clearly not a fan of the comparison. “Don’t bring Dick into this—he’s a business major and a complete dork.”
You couldn’t help but laugh. “So are you. You’re definitely related.”
He turned his head, giving you an offended look. “When have I ever been a dork?”
You raised an eyebrow, pretending to think hard. “Oh, let’s see… there was the time you spent two hours lecturing me about motorcycle engines, and the time you almost punched a guy because he didn’t like The Terminator.”
Jason sat up, wiping his hands on his jeans with a smug grin. “Those are perfectly valid things to get worked up about.”
“Sure, sure,” you teased, leaning against the counter. “You and your brothers sound like a bunch of overgrown kids.”
Jason’s grin faltered, and he looked thoughtful for a moment. “Yeah, well… it’s always the big brother that’s the worst.”
“Dick?” you asked, grinning.
Jason nodded, laughing. “Yep. Dick.”
You blinked, realising the name. “Wait—his name’s Richard?”
Jason smirked. “Yep.”
“Oh, I thought you were just being a dick.”
Jason burst out laughing, the tension in the room lifting. “Nope. Just family nicknames.”
You shook your head, still smiling as he stood and dusted himself off. “You’re a perfect angel, aren’t you?”
“Damn right,” Jason replied with a wink, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “Saint Todd, at your service.”
“I’m not convinced,” you teased, crossing your arms. “I’ve seen your search history.”
Jason’s face flushed. “That was Roy!”
“Sure, I bet Roy doesn’t even exist.”
Jason smirked, pulling out his phone and typing something before tossing it to you. “Roy’s Instagram.”
You glanced at the profile picture and let out a low whistle. “He’s out of your league.”
Jason scoffed. “If he’s out of mine, he’s definitely not in yours.”
You flushed pink, smiling softly. “Dork.”
Jason grinned back. “Takes one to know one.” He stood, setting the last piece of equipment down. “I think I’m done.”
You smirked. “Now you can record me in the bathroom.”
Jason paused, then deadpanned, “I could if I wanted more money.”
You stared at him. He stared back.
“Please tell me people won’t actually pay for that,” you said, voice dripping with disbelief.
“Millions, princess.”
“How do you even know that?”
Jason blushed. “I—I don’t! I’m just guessing!”
“Do I need to check if Roman is paying you enough?” you teased, shaking your head.
Jason just grinned, his eyes sparkling with that teasing glint that was becoming all too familiar.
He took a step closer, closing the distance between you. The air around you crackled with tension, every heartbeat echoing in your ears. You could see his eyes searching yours, a mix of desire and uncertainty.
You could feel the heat radiating from him, the scent of leather and something distinctly Jason filling the space between you. His eyes lingered on yours for a moment, as if he was trying to decide something.
You swallowed hard, your heart thudding against your ribs. “So, uh… are you done?” you asked, your voice quieter than you intended.
Jason’s eyes flicked to your lips for just a second before he smiled, stepping back a little. “Yeah. All set. Your place is Fort Knox now.”
You exhaled a breath you didn’t realise you were holding, nodding as you tried to steady your nerves. “Good. Thanks for, uh… keeping me safe.”
Jason opened his mouth to respond, but before he could say anything, his phone buzzed loudly from where it sat on the couch. He sighed, his expression tightening as he glanced at the screen.
“Shit—it’s Bruce,” he muttered, already sounding exasperated.
You watched him as he picked up the call, his body language shifting from relaxed to business in a heartbeat. “Yeah, Bruce?” His tone was clipped, like he wasn’t in the mood for whatever conversation was about to happen.
Jason walked across the room, his voice lowering as he spoke to his adoptive father. You could hear bits of the conversation, mostly grunts of acknowledgment from Jason, but your thoughts were elsewhere—still caught on the charged moment you’d shared just before the phone interrupted.
Jason ended the call and walked back toward you, his expression unreadable. “I gotta head out. Bruce needs a quick favour.”
You forced a smile, though disappointment tugged at your chest. “Yeah, of course. I understand, I’ll be fine. I’ve got all this super fancy hi-tech security now.”
Jason chuckled softly, as he headed for the door. But before he left, he paused, turning back to look at you. His gaze lingered for a moment, like he was about to say something important, but he hesitated.
Finally, he gave you a small smile. “Don’t get into too much trouble while I’m gone.”
You grinned back, feeling the warmth of his smile in your chest. “No promises.”
“I won’t be long—call me if you need me”.
With one last lingering glance, Jason slipped out the door, leaving the apartment feeling colder, quieter, and emptier than it had just moments ago.
As you leaned against the kitchen counter, you couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something building between you—something neither of you was quite ready to acknowledge. You glanced around the room, still feeling Jason’s presence somehow in the quiet.
A soft leather jacket lay over the back of your couch. You chuckled, realising he must’ve forgotten it in his rush. Picking it up, you caught the familiar scent of leather and something distinctly him. The smell brought a warmth to your chest and made the hollow room feel just a bit less empty.
Maybe, you and Jason would figure out how to navigate whatever this was, but until then, you were safe in the knowledge that your apartment was now officially under 24/7 Jason Todd surveillance.
——
The Wayne Manor was quiet when Jason arrived, a sharp contrast to the tension simmering beneath the surface. Bruce was waiting in the doorway, dressed down in a dark sweater and jeans—clothes that looked oddly casual on him.
“Thanks for coming,” Bruce said, his voice softer than usual. “Alfred’s taking a few days off to look after a friend in Metropolis. I didn’t want to leave the kids alone here for too long, especially after… well, you know.”
Jason nodded, glancing around. “Yeah. No problem.”
They walked into the manor, and Jason took in the familiar surroundings, memories of chaotic afternoons with his brothers drifting through his mind. But today, the place felt… different.
“Where’s Damian?” Jason asked as they walked toward the living room.
“He’s upstairs,” Bruce said, pausing. “Having a rough week with college. New teachers, new pressures. He doesn’t want to talk about it, but…” Bruce trailed off, his concern clear in the set of his shoulders.
“Damian? Not talking?” Jason smirked. “Didn’t know that was possible.”
Bruce gave a rare chuckle but sighed. “Not everyone wears their emotions on their sleeve, Jason.”
Jason shrugged, letting the comment slide. “Want me to talk to him?”
“If you don’t mind.” Bruce’s expression softened, a glimmer of gratitude in his eyes. “He looks up to you, even if he’ll never admit it.”
Jason made his way upstairs, tapping on Damian’s door and grinning when he got a reluctant “Come in.”
After some teasing, Jason managed to distract Damian enough to soften his expression and ease his mind. When Jason finally returned to the kitchen, he found Bruce waiting with two mugs of coffee. Bruce slid one toward him, eyes fixed in that familiar, scrutinising way.
“Thanks for talking to him,” Bruce said, taking a sip from his mug. “He listens to you in ways he doesn’t with me.”
Jason shrugged. “Family’s family.”
Bruce’s eyes lingered a moment before he cleared his throat, his expression shifting. “And how are you doing, Jason?”
“Fine,” Jason replied, a bit too quickly, taking a long sip of coffee and avoiding Bruce’s gaze.
“Are you?” Bruce raised an eyebrow, studying him with a hint of amusement. “Usually when you dodge questions that fast, it’s one of two things.”
Jason’s brow furrowed, glancing up suspiciously. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Bruce smirked, shrugging one shoulder. “It’s either trouble at work—or woman trouble. And I have a feeling work isn’t what’s keeping you up at night.”
Jason felt heat rise to his cheeks, and he let out a frustrated huff. “Seriously, Bruce?”
Bruce’s smirk widened, his eyes glinting with mild amusement. “I might be getting older, Jason, but I can still recognize the signs.”
Jason rolled his eyes, trying to shrug off the flush creeping into his face. “It’s not like that.”
“Uh-huh.” Bruce’s tone was so casual, so nonchalant, it only made Jason more uncomfortable. “So if it’s not that, then what is it?”
Jason looked away, swallowing hard. “Look, it’s… complicated.”
Bruce leaned back, his expression turning from teasing to something softer, almost understanding. “Life usually is. But if you ever want to talk about it… well, you know where I am.”
Jason let out a deep breath, nodding. For all the embarrassment, there was a strange relief in knowing Bruce saw through him, even if he wasn’t ready to open up just yet.
Bruce gave his shoulder a reassuring squeeze. “Take care of yourself, Jason,” he said, his voice gentle. “And try not to make things too complicated.”
Jason smirked, feeling a hint of his usual confidence return. “I’m a Todd, Bruce. Complicated is my specialty.”
Bruce chuckled, shaking his head. “That’s the problem.”
Jason couldn’t help but smile as he left, Bruce’s warmth and understanding lingering with him. Whatever this was with you, maybe it wasn’t something he had to navigate alone.

Bodyguard!Jason Todd x Singer!Reader
Summary: “After you, princess.” You rolled your eyes but smiled as you climbed in. “You know, if you keep calling me that, I might start thinking you’re flirting.”
Warnings: None. A little bit of manhandling with a crazy fan.
A/N: And as promised, here is the next chapter 🥰🥰 sending all my love to you wonderful readers & please enjoy the next chapter - Elle xoxo

HANDS OFF
———
The crowd buzzed with excitement as you signed autographs, your smile bright but your energy fading. You were used to this—the fans, the chaos—but sometimes, things got out of hand. Like now.
A fan, much too close for comfort, pushed forward, eagerly shoving a phone in your face. “Can I get a selfie? And an autograph, too?”
Before you could answer, his hand lingered on your arm a little too long, his fingers brushing against your skin in a way that sent a chill down your spine. You tensed, but before you could react, Jason was already moving.
In an instant, Jason had the guy by the collar, effortlessly lifting him up as though he weighed nothing. His grip was firm around the guy’s neck, voice low and dangerous. “Step back, buddy.”
The fan’s eyes widened in shock, his voice shaky. “W-what are you doing?!”
You stepped behind Jason, your heart racing, but your hand instinctively reached out to touch his arm. “Jay, it’s okay, please… Come on, let’s go.” Your voice was soft, trying to soothe the fire in his eyes.
Jason’s glare was locked onto the guy for a moment longer, his jaw tense. But when he looked at you, his expression softened slightly. He glanced between you and the guy before dropping him, letting the fan stumble back.
“Come on,” you urged gently.
Jason put his jacket over your shoulders, pulling you closer as the two of you made your way out of the crowd. You snuggled into the warmth of the jacket, inhaling the scent of his cologne—leather and spice, comforting and familiar.
“Thanks for back there,” you said, offering a soft smile.
Jason looked away, rubbing the back of his neck, clearly flustered. “It’s my job.”
“I know, but—thanks,” you repeated, your hand squeezing his forearm gently. You glanced over at a nearby food stall and grinned. “Let me get you a hotdog as my way of saying thanks. I know you like junk food, Mr. Muscles.”
He smirked, his blue eyes twinkling with amusement. “I’ll take you up on that, Ms. Hotpants.”
You rolled your eyes. “That was one photoshoot.”
“Oh—it was enough,” he teased, his smirk growing wider.
——
As you grabbed your food, Jason stood close to you, his presence reassuring as he blocked the prying eyes of the crowd. It was like a barrier between you and the world, a wall of protection you were getting used to.
“It’s difficult sometimes,” you mused as you both sat down to eat. “People don’t really understand personal limits or space.”
Jason took a huge bite of his hotdog, lathered in an obscene amount of ketchup. “Trust me, I have a brother like that.”
You grinned, glancing at his hotdog. “Got enough ketchup there, bud?”
He grinned back, unbothered. “I think I need another bottle.”
You laughed, squeezing mustard onto yours. “I know I haven’t been the easiest to get along with lately, and I’m sorry. It’s just been hard to adjust, y’know? I’m used to being alone most of the time.”
You tried not to add, Having a hot bodyguard is hard.
Jason shrugged, his voice teasing. “Relax, princess. I know you divas need your space with all that ego and all.”
You blushed at the nickname, rolling your eyes to hide it. “It didn’t help when you started going through all the cupboards in my house.”
Jason rubbed the back of his neck, clearly embarrassed. “Yeah, I’m sorry about that. My best friend—who’s an idiot by the way—gave me shit for that.”
You grinned. “Good. Thank him for me.”
Jason scoffed. “I’d rather not.”
——
As you both sat under the dim lights of the street food stall, the noise of the city seemed to fade into the background. It was just the two of you, sharing hotdogs and trading banter like old friends. Jason’s usual guarded expression had softened, and for once, you could see the man behind the tough exterior.
“You know,” you said between bites, “it’s weird. I’ve been in crowds like this my whole career, and I’ve never had someone step in like that before.”
Jason glanced at you, his blue eyes briefly flicking up before returning to his food. “You shouldn’t have to deal with that alone. That’s why I’m here.”
You nodded, appreciating the simplicity of his response. There was no grand speech, no overt promise—just quiet, steady support. It was one of the things you were growing to like about Jason. He didn’t make a big deal out of it, but he was always there when it counted.
“Still,” you mused, wiping a smear of mustard from your lip, “I don’t want to be the girl who needs a bodyguard all the time. I’m supposed to be the badass frontwoman of a rock band.”
Jason chuckled softly, shaking his head. “You can still be badass and have someone watching your back. Besides, I think the crowd would lose it if you started throwing punches on stage.”
You grinned. “Maybe I should try it. Could add a whole new vibe to the show.”
“I’ll be front row for that,” Jason said, smirking.
There was a beat of silence, the kind that usually would have felt awkward, but tonight it felt… easy. Comfortable. You both finished your food, the night air cool against your skin, and for a moment, you let yourself relax. Being around Jason was strange that way—one minute, it felt like you were on edge, and the next, you felt like you could let your guard down completely.
As you tossed the last of your wrappers into the nearby trash can, you noticed Jason watching you, his gaze more thoughtful than usual.
“What?” you asked, brushing your hands on your jeans. “Do I have ketchup on my face?”
He shook his head, still studying you like he was seeing something he hadn’t noticed before. “I just… you’re a lot stronger than people give you credit for.”
You blinked, taken aback by the sincerity in his voice. “What do you mean?”
Jason shifted in his seat, his hands resting on his knees as he leaned forward slightly. “You’re out here every night, dealing with fans, managers, press—and you’re handling it all like it’s nothing. Most people would crack under that kind of pressure. But you? You just keep going.”
You felt your heart skip a beat, the unexpected compliment catching you off guard. Jason wasn’t one to hand out praise lightly, and hearing it from him felt… different. Special, even.
“I’m just doing my job,” you said softly, unsure how to respond.
Jason’s lips quirked into a small smile, and he stood, extending a hand to help you up. “Yeah, well, so am I.”
You took his hand, his grip strong and steady as he pulled you to your feet. For a moment, your hands lingered, the contact sending a spark of warmth through your skin. You quickly let go, clearing your throat.
“Thanks, Jason,” you said, your voice a little quieter than before.
He gave you a brief nod, his expression softening. “Anytime.”
As you both walked back toward the car, the night air cool against your face, you couldn’t help but glance over at him. There was something different about tonight, something unspoken yet undeniable. Jason had always been a wall of protection, a shield between you and the chaos of the world. But tonight, he felt like more than that. He felt like someone you could lean on. Someone you wanted to lean on.
When you reached the car, Jason opened the door for you, his usual teasing smirk back in place. “After you, princess.”
You rolled your eyes but smiled as you climbed in. “You know, if you keep calling me that, I might start thinking you’re flirting.”
Jason chuckled, closing the door behind you before slipping into the driver’s seat. “Wouldn’t dream of it.”
——
The ride back to your apartment was quiet, the city lights flashing by as you leaned your head against the window. You watched Jason out of the corner of your eye, his strong hands gripping the wheel, his jaw set in that determined way he always had. And for the first time, you wondered what it would be like to reach across the space between you, to touch his hand, to let yourself get a little closer.
But you didn’t. Instead, you let the comfortable silence fill the car, knowing that for now, this was enough. Jason was enough.
———
Back at the apartment, you kicked off your shoes and flopped onto the couch, letting out a long sigh. The exhaustion of the day had finally caught up with you, and all you wanted to do was curl up under a blanket and sleep for a week.
Jason, ever the professional, leaned against the doorframe, thick arms crossed over his chest. “You need anything else before I head to my room?”
You shook your head, smiling softly. “Nah, I’m good. Thanks for everything tonight.”
He gave you a small nod, but instead of heading to his room, he lingered for a moment, his eyes flicking to the TV. “You’re watching that zombie show again?”
You shrugged, grabbing the remote and flipping through the channels. “It’s comforting. Something about mindless brain-eaters makes me feel better about my own life.”
Jason snorted, pushing off the doorframe and heading toward the kitchen. “You’re weird, you know that?”
“You like it,” you called after him, grinning.
Jason’s voice echoed from the kitchen. “Yeah, yeah.”
You chuckled to yourself, settling back into the couch and pulling the blanket up to your chin. As the familiar sound of zombies groaning filled the room, you couldn’t help but feel a sense of peace wash over you. It was strange—being with Jason had started off as a professional necessity, but now, it felt like something more.

GIRL INTERRUPTED
———
The afternoon sun hung lazily in the sky, casting a warm glow over the garden complex as Jason moved around, lifting heavy boxes as if they weighed nothing. His muscles flexed with every move, the sun catching on his damp skin as sweat rolled down his temples. His hair, darkened with moisture, stuck to his forehead in a way that made him look effortlessly rugged.
Selina, lounging on a nearby chair with her sunglasses perched low on her nose, tilted her head, smirking. “That’s the guy you’ve been complaining about?”
You rolled your eyes, trying to keep your gaze off Jason as he worked. “I didn’t complain about him that much.”
Ivy raised an eyebrow, her tone flat. “You spent at least an afternoon complaining about him.”
Harley snickered, twirling a strand of hair around her finger. “Yeah, you definitely plotted his accidental death.”
You crossed your arms defensively. “Not death.”
“Fine,” Ivy mused with a knowing smile. “Unalive-ment.”
“Yeah, that,” Harley agreed, her grin wide as she glanced between you and Jason, clearly enjoying your flustered state.
You shifted in your seat. “Well, I’m not anymore.”
Selina gave you a pointed look, her smirk growing wider. “Honey, have you seen him?”
Harley leaned in, conspiratorial. “Does he provide anything other than security?”
Ivy, never missing a beat, added, “Sex-curity,” her lips curling into a smirk.
You nearly choked on your drink, glaring at Ivy as you sputtered. “He makes pancakes, that’s all.”
Harley’s eyes lit up with mischief. “Before or after the deed?”
“No deed has been done!” you snapped, the heat creeping up your neck and to your face.
Ivy’s eyes sparkled with amusement. “The blush on your face says otherwise.”
You shot her a look, your cheeks burning. “I’m not blushing!”
Selina cackled, leaning back in her chair with an air of superiority. “Of course you’re not, babe. That’s just… red face paint.”
“Why do you all hate me?” you groaned, burying your face in your hands.
“We don’t,” Selina replied with a grin. “You just look adorable when you have a crush.”
You shot up in your seat, flustered. “I don’t have a crush! It’s just a work relationship.”
Harley patted your shoulder sympathetically. “It’s okay, sweetie. We get it.”
Ivy leaned forward, her gaze playful. “Don’t 80% of relationships spark in the workplace?”
Selina adjusted her sunglasses, her smirk never fading. “If he lived with me, I wouldn’t be spending my time fighting it.”
You huffed, crossing your arms again. “Well, he’s kind of an ass.”
“How so?” Harley asked, genuinely curious.
You waved your hands over your head dramatically. “Y’know…”
“Sweetie, I don’t,” Harley said, her confusion obvious as she blinked up at you.
You waved your hands more, as if that would clarify things. “He’s just… y’know!”
Selina laughed, shaking her head. “What you’re feeling is sexual tension, babe.”
“Sexual what now?” you muttered under your breath, clearly flustered.
“You should work it out with him,” Selina added, her voice dripping with amusement.
Ivy, ever the instigator, tilted her head towards the garden. “Oh, look, he’s coming over here.”
Your eyes widened in panic as you frantically fixed your hair, heart racing.
“Just kidding,” Ivy teased, smirking at your reaction.
You let out a breath, glaring at her. “Ha-ha-ha. Can we please stop talking about this?”
“I think you’d be cute together,” Harley said, her voice sing-song as she gave you a sly grin.
Selina raised an eyebrow, her gaze flicking to Jason, who was still lifting boxes in the sun. “He clearly has a soft spot for you. He can’t stop looking at you.”
You froze for a moment, a tiny spark of hope flickering inside you. “You think he likes me?” The words left your mouth before you could stop them, sounding almost… hopeful.
But before your friends could say anything, you caught yourself, straightening up. “Wait—of course he’s looking at me. He’s doing his job. Protecting me.”
Ivy leaned in, her green eyes sparkling with amusement. “What would you do if this wasn’t just a professional relationship?”
“I—I…” you stammered, suddenly unsure of yourself.
Harley giggled, elbowing you playfully. “You guys are totally gonna fall in love.”
Selina gave you a knowing smirk. “That’ll be great. When you two fall in love, the media will finally stop insinuating you and Sionis are a thing.”
Ivy’s lips curled into a sly smile. “Care to wager how long it’ll take?”.
You threw your hands up, exasperated. “I’m right here, y’know.”
Harley tilted her head, pretending to think. “Three months, max.”
Ivy leaned back, studying you carefully. “They seem like the slow burn type.”
Selina, her eyes still on Jason, watched as he stacked the final box and stood to stretch. “Nah,” she drawled, her voice playful. “Y/N won’t be able to resist those muscles.”
“Shhh!” you hissed, panic rising in your chest. “He’s going to hear you!”.
But it was too late. Jason, now aware of all of you staring at him, turned to face your little group. He blinked in confusion, his face flushing slightly as he quickly looked away, clearly bashful.
Jason muttered something under his breath as he rubbed the back of his neck. “I need Roy.”
Selina leaned over, whispering conspiratorially. “I don’t think you’ll need to wait three months after all.”
————
Later that evening, Jason found himself at the local bar, nursing a drink while Roy leaned against the bar, a teasing grin on his face. Jason had been reasonably happy to leave you at home tonight, especially since the girls had chosen to crash at yours, having a pamper and movie night with you. Selina frightened him more than Bruce sometimes. You’d be safe.
“Hey, brooding bird! What’s got you all mopey?” Roy asked, nudging Jason with his elbow.
“Nothing,” Jason muttered, taking a swig of his drink.
Roy raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. “Right. Just like I’m ‘nothing’ when I wear these tight spandex shorts, huh?”
Jason groaned, running a hand through his hair. “Can you not? I’m serious.”
“Fine, fine! But you can’t just sit there looking all tortured without telling me what’s going on. It’s against the bro code,” Roy insisted, mock-serious.
Jason shot him a glare. “What I really need is a time machine to go back to when I didn’t care about—”
“Whoa, wait. Are you actually talking about feelings? Like, real ones?” Roy interrupted, eyes wide with mock horror. “This is better than reality TV!”
“I’m not talking about feelings, dammit! It’s just that… I think the girls were gossiping about me,” Jason said, the frustration creeping into his voice.
Roy leaned closer, excitement glinting in his eyes. “Oh, do tell! Who’s gossiping? Is it Ivy? She seems like the type to always knows the juiciest details!”
“No, it’s not Ivy. It’s…” Jason hesitated, glancing around as if the walls had ears. “It’s Y/N.”
Roy’s expression morphed into a knowing smirk. “You mean the one you’re totally not crushing on?”
“I’m not crushing!” Jason snapped, his cheeks flushing.
Roy cackled. “Oh, it’s even better than I thought! You are totally crushing. What did they say?”
“I don’t know!” Jason groaned, burying his face in his hands. “I just saw them looking at me and whispering. It was… weird.”
Roy leaned back, a grin plastered across his face. “Dude, they were totally gossiping about you. I mean, have you seen your arms? Of course they’re talking about you.”
“I hate you,” Jason grumbled, but he couldn’t help the small smile tugging at his lips.
“Come on, lighten up! Just own it! You’re the guy they’re gossiping about. It’s like being a celebrity. You should be flattered!” Roy encouraged, trying to keep a straight face but failing miserably.
“Flattered? More like mortified,” Jason retorted.
“Mortified or not, it’s too late now. You’re the star of their show,” Roy laughed, raising his drink in a mock toast. “To Jason! The man, the myth, the rumoured crush!”
Jason groaned again, burying his face in his hands once more. “I’m never telling you anything ever again.”
Roy just chuckled, clearly enjoying this far too much. “Too late for that! Now, when’s the date?”
“No date!” Jason protested, shaking his head vehemently.
“Sure, keep telling yourself that, Romeo. I’ll just be over here, waiting for the ‘I can’t believe we kissed!’ call,” Roy teased, winking.
Jason couldn’t help but chuckle, shaking his head as he downed the rest of his drink. “You’re insufferable.”
“Yeah, but you love me for it,” Roy replied with a grin, raising his glass once more.
As they left the bar, Jason couldn’t shake the feeling that maybe, just maybe, things might not be so bad after all.

HARDER THAN NECESSARY
———
***
The apartment was eerily quiet, the soft hum of the city beyond the window the only sound filling the space. You tiptoed across the hardwood floors, your oversized college sweater hanging loosely on your frame, hoping to make it to the door without disturbing the brick wall of a man currently asleep down the hall.
Just as your fingers brushed the doorknob, a loud click echoed through the room.
“Freeze,” Jason’s deep, gravelly voice commanded, his gun trained on you in an instant. His eyes were sharp, scanning you for a threat before recognition dawned on his face.
“Holy shit,” you gasped, raising your hands slowly. “Slow down, cowboy.”
Jason cursed under his breath, quickly holstering the gun. “Shit. Why are you sneaking around your own house?”
“Because!” you snapped, not wanting to admit why you were really sneaking out. The idea of telling him you were trying to repay him for the burger and chips he got you last week was… embarrassing, to say the least. “I am… I just…”
Jason rolled his eyes. “Why are you dressed sketchy?”
“It’s comfy, sue me,” you huffed, tugging at the hem of the oversized sweater.
“Don’t tempt me,” Jason muttered, crossing his arms and planting himself between you and the door like the human wall he was.
“Look, just go back to bed,” you sighed, trying to push past him. “I’m sorry I woke you.”
But Jason didn’t budge. “You’re not going out.”
“Yes, I am,” you shot back, frustration bubbling up. “Alone.”
Jason’s expression darkened, his body language shifting from casual to protective in an instant. “No—I’m going with you. Let me just get a jacket.” He reached for his brown leather jacket draped over the kitchen barstool.
“No!!” you blurted, panic rising in your chest. You hadn’t planned for him to come along. “I’ll be fine! I do this all the time on my own! I really don’t need an escort.”
Jason’s eyes narrowed as he grumbled, “This is why Mr. Sionis hired me. You can’t do this shit alone anymore—it isn’t safe.”
“Roman’s an overprotective idiot,” you muttered, arms crossed over your chest. “He doesn’t know the half of what I do.”
Jason sighed, clearly losing patience. “We either go together, or you don’t go at all.”
You looked down at the floor, knowing you were defeated. All you wanted was to repay Jason’s kindness from before, but now it felt like the universe was against you. Keeping your emotions in check, you let out a long breath. “I’m not used to this…” you muttered.
Jason softened just a little, sensing your frustration. “Let me go with you. I’ll pay. If we pretend it’s a date, people are less likely to even recognise you.”
Your face flushed pink at his suggestion. “What?!”
Jason fumbled, his own face heating up. “Just—just pretend! Look, I’m here to stay, okay? Mr. Sionis wants you safe, so we should probably get to know each other better. I mean, I am living in your box room down the hall.”
You shot him a look. “It’s not a box room—I gave you a room with a nice view of Gotham.”
Jason smirked, clearly amused. “You’re deflecting.”
With a dramatic sigh, you threw your hands up. “Fine. But I’m driving.”
Jason tossed you his keys, surprising you. “Don’t scratch it. I just got it fixed up.”
You smirked, twirling the keys in your hand. “Don’t worry, I won’t hurt your baby.”
Jason’s face flushed slightly as he looked away. “You better not, or you’ll be paying for her next paint job.”
You grinned mischievously. “Her? Does she have a name, tough guy?”.
Jason ignored your teasing, shrugging on his jacket. “Come on—I thought you were hungry.”
Stifling a laugh, you headed out the door, calling back over your shoulder, “Yes, sir.”
Jason bit back the smile threatening to spread across his face, trying to ignore the way that “sir” made his stomach twist in a way it definitely shouldn’t.
—
The diner was quiet, the low hum of neon lights flickering above as you and Jason sat across from each other in one of the old booths. When the food arrived, Jason reached for his wallet, but before he could pull it out, you quickly slipped your card over the machine with a smug smile.
“You didn’t have to do that,” Jason grumbled, clearly caught off guard.
“I know,” you replied, giving him a teasing smile. “But it’s nice to repay the favor, y’know?”
Jason gave you a rare, small smile. “Thanks.”
You nodded, a little flutter of satisfaction warming your chest. “However, if I’d known that, I would’ve ordered more,” Jason teased, leaning back in his seat.
You rolled your eyes, playfully scoffing. “Jerk.”
“Eh, sue me.”
You tried to focus on your food, but your eyes kept drifting back to Jason as he casually leaned back in his leather jacket, looking more relaxed than you’d ever seen him. There was something about the way the dim light softened his features, made his usual tough-guy exterior seem more approachable.
Jason noticed you staring and raised an eyebrow. “What? Is there something on my face?” He wiped at his chin, checking for stray ketchup.
Flushing red, you shook your head quickly. “No! No… sorry, I just zoned out. I was thinking about a new song I’m working on.”
Jason smiled, the edges of his lips tugging upward. “Yeah, I heard some of it last night. Or, well, early this morning.”
Your eyes widened. “Oh shit, sorry—I didn’t realise the noise carried that far down the hall.”
Jason shrugged, his smile still lingering. “It’s not a complaint. It sounded great.”
You were about to say something in return, something sweet and appreciative, but Jason—being Jason—slurped his drink loudly through the straw, completely killing the mood. You furrowed your brow, muttering, “Mood kill.”
Jason looked at you, confused. “What?”
“Nothing,” you said with a sigh, glancing at the clock. “We should probably head back.”
——
The drive back to the apartment was quieter than usual, but not uncomfortable. Jason had his elbow resting on the car door, his other hand draped casually on his thigh, looking out at the city lights. You glanced at him every now and then, trying to shake the lingering thoughts of how natural it felt having him beside you.
As you stopped at a red light, you couldn’t help but ask, “So, you really heard me working on the song last night?”
Jason nodded, glancing over at you. “Yeah. You’re good. Like… really good. You’re not just some pretty face in a band.”
You felt your face heat up. “Thanks, but you don’t have to say that just because you’re protecting me.”
“I’m not,” he said, his tone more serious than you expected. “I mean it. You’ve got talent. Don’t let Roman’s overprotectiveness make you forget that.”
The compliment caught you off guard. Jason wasn’t the type to throw praise around carelessly, and hearing it from him made it feel different. More genuine. You smiled, turning back to the road as the light turned green. “That means a lot coming from you.”
Jason shifted slightly, as if uncomfortable with the sentimentality. “Yeah, well… don’t get used to it. I’ve got a tough reputation to keep.”
You couldn’t help but laugh at that, the sound filling the car. “Sure, big guy. I’ll keep your secret.”
The rest of the drive passed quickly, and soon enough, you were pulling into the underground parking lot of your building. You killed the engine and sat there for a moment, neither of you moving to get out.
Jason was the first to break the silence, clearing his throat. “You really didn’t need to sneak out earlier, y’know. I get that you like your independence, but… I’m here to help. You don’t have to do everything on your own.”
Your hand hesitated on the car door handle, his words sinking in. He wasn’t just talking about tonight. He was talking about more than that—about your habit of handling things solo, even when it wasn’t safe. You bit your lip, looking down at your hands. “It’s not that I don’t appreciate the help… It’s just hard to adjust to having someone around all the time. I’m used to taking care of myself.”
Jason watched you carefully, his voice softer than before. “I get it. But you don’t have to anymore. Not with me.”
You glanced over at him, meeting his steady gaze. The sincerity in his eyes made your heart skip a beat. It was as if he wasn’t just saying it because it was his job—he meant it, and that scared you a little.
“Thanks, Jason,” you said quietly, feeling the weight of his words.
He gave a small nod, reaching for the door handle. “Come on, let’s get inside before Roman tracks us down.”
As you both stepped out of the car and made your way toward the elevator, you couldn’t shake the feeling that something had shifted between you. It wasn’t just the professional relationship anymore. It was different…in a good way.
When you reached your apartment, you turned to face Jason before unlocking the door. “Hey,” you said, your voice barely above a whisper. “Thanks for tonight… and for everything.”
Jason gave you a half-smile, his eyes softening just slightly. “Anytime, princess.”

Short snippet:
Roy’s eyebrows lifted upon seeing a photo of the new client, “Isn’t that the chick you had on your wall at uni?”.
“What? No!”, Jason bristled and shoved the photo of you back under the documents. He inwardly cursed. Fucking Roy.
“So, you're saying that if I look inside your office locker, I won't find a poster of her?”.
Jason heard the cocky smirk on Roy’s face and groaned in irritation running a hand over the front of his face, “Touch my locker and I’ll break your legs”.
Roy cackled loudly and sat on the edge of Jason’s desk, “Ok so you do still have it. Better not let her find it”.
“You’re a real jackass you know”.
“So I’ve heard...maybe she’ll sign it for you if you ask nicely”, Roy continued to mock Jason, making kissy faces at him.
“Why don’t you shut your mouth before I shut it for you”, Jason scowled and turned his chair around pretending to look for some files in the cabinet behind him. Hoping Roy would get the hint and leave him alone.
