REVIEW: St Cuthberts Mill Watercolor Paper
St Cuthberts Mill started making papers in the 1700’s, and today they offer three watercolor papers — Saunders Waterford®, Bockingford®, and Millford. All are suitable for other mediums as well. All too often at stores, artists are given a choice of white cold press paper at 300 gsm/140 lb weight and that’s it. This is the most flexible of papers, capable of handling the widest range of…

Day 11 of #Inktober2023 word was Wander. This is a piece about wandering where you don't belong. Here, a curious treasure hunter has entered into the wrong part of the cave.
I am now behind and playing catch-up, but I'm going to try my very hardest not to let this get to me - I just have to accept it as there is a lot happening in the background.
Black ink was used in this, some diluted into a grey wash. Same paper, Bockingford 300gsm measuring 28cm x 38cm.
...Can you spot Smashy the #squirrel hiding in today's entry? I doubt so since today's squirrel hunt is VERY hard. Best of luck to everyone who tries! 🐿️

📏 What’s your go-to canvas size? and 💐 Do your drawing suit your aesthetics? for the artist asks, please?
📏 What’s your go-to canvas size?
Varies, but usually 18x26 cm / 10"x7". My favourite paper is Bockingford hot-pressed and I tend to buy my watercolour pads in this specific size because it's big enough for detailed work, but small enough that I don't have to scan my works in two parts. If I work bigger than that, the size is typically 23x31 cm / 12"x9".
💐 Do your drawings suit your aesthetics?
Good question! I've heard people say I look like my art, but I can't see it myself beyond the fact that I have long hair and the same kind of hooked nose I've given plenty of my characters. :D I dress casual and rarely wear jewelry or makeup, and I wouldn't say I have an aesthetic of any kind irl. I make my characters wear all the showy, uncomfortable outfits so that I don't have to!

Still waiting on the laptop so I'm playing with my watercolour pencils and my Microns. I also have a bunch of watercolour papers that want testing. This one's a cold-pressed 90lb Bockingford sheet. Little bit of buckling but not as much as I expected. Felt pretty nice to draw on, too, and the pencils got on really well with it.

A little piece of rescue art.
A few weeks ago, I drew a disastrous large murmuration. On a very large sheet, a very expensive large sheet. To be fair, it was an experiment: conclusion? That paper doesn’t work well with charcoal at that scale.
So I did what any sensible artist does. Scavenge the unmarked paper, consign the rest to my scraps bin(gets used for spacing, testing new paints/pencils/pens … toys).
The other night, this ‘scrap’ caught my eye; a tiny fragment of the whole. So I did what any sensible artist does; I revisited and reworked one of my mistakes.
I’ve added the form on the right and some more marks to represent individual birds using Derwent Graphic 2B and F pencils. I then added some more darkness to the main ribbons and a part of the new form with Derwent Onyx* pencils & now, I like it.
Murmuration form 3
Derwent charcoal pencil
Coates Willow charcoal
Derwent Graphic Pencil
Derwent Onyx pencil
Bockingford 300gsm NOT watercolour paper
10x6cm
Signed & titled on verso
*a note on those Onyx pencils
They’re a very dark pencil, but much harder than 6B and on, they feel closer to 2 or 3B. They take a very good point and the leads are strong. By far the best replacement I’ve found for the now defunct Mars EE(I have about 2/3 of a pencil left). I use both grades, the medium and the dark.
Two other key things in their favour?
They’re easily available and you can buy them individually. Oh yeah, they’re cheap too.

“BABU AND BIBI 2” (MR AND MRS), a painting in Watercolour done by me on A3 Bockingford 300 gsm Watercolour paper. This painting is an inspiration from the Kalighat style of painting after Anwar Chitrakar. ABOUT KALIGHAT PAINTING The painters of this style of painting are known as Patua’s or Chitrakars. The themes they covered were the characters from mythology and during the 19th century, they covered subjects like contemporary lifestyles, and social issues with a hint of wit. In this painting, a Bengali couple is seated and enjoying a warm afternoon. Kalighat painting was the first artistic expression of a subaltern culture in the Indian sub-continent that addressed the consumer directly; it was neither directed by nor produced for the capital or the ruling authority.

• What are the influences on them and what engages you in their work?
Each designer and creative have a wide variety of design styles and motifs in their work, some similar and some very unique.
The modern bold style of type, bright vibrant colours, and simple design used in many of these creatives work, is what really intrigues and influences me.
The use of collage, pattern, texture and animation used in many of their works/ websites inspires me to incorporate more of these techniques in my own work.
Particularly within the NZ Designers and companies, it is really interesting to look over their design work and the companies they work with, that I have seen or purchased products from myself. I am now able to put a name to the designs behind products that I have really liked. (eg. Curious Studio has designed for companies Bockingford sketch pads, Me Today vitamins, and Kapiti ice cream - all products I have purchased and always been drawn in and captivated through not only their product, but the packaging/ design).
• In what (if any) ways are they collaborative and engaging communities?
Particularly the local NZ designers and design organisations may collaborate in many ways whether it be working together on a project by combining their styles to create unique product designs, or simply gaining inspiration from one another work, helping each other to gain new perspectives and ideas in design.
• What impacts, concepts, thematics, and organising principles are at play in the creative practice?
Creative businesses have a positive knockoff effect on the places around them, where new ideas spread to other sectors/ designers, improving their ability to absorb innovation.
Creative practices produce the means for collaborative relationships.
They can be the means to start a creative business - commission design work, and work with clients of other businesses to create product/website media designs.
Collaborating with organisations/ people in different industries to share skills and knowledge, and merge together their qualifications/ specialities to create something new.
New and emerging design styles are becoming common throughout different designers work (eg, colours, font types, website/advertisements using animation, shapes, symbols, etc). Similar styles and ideas among these factors are being shared among companies, where they recognise what is currently trending in the design industry, and follow this to appeal to their audience in the changing times. Although this could limit diversity in design, designers ensure that their work is their own, and unique in its own way, to create points of difference.
Designers are following trends, but incorporating unique techniques, styles and ideas to add something new and different, consequently providing a wider range of design diversity throughout these trends.

“To design is to plan and to organize, to order, to relate, and to control. In short, it embraces all means of opposing disorders and accidents. Therefore, it signifies a human need and qualifies man’s thinking and doing.” — Josef Albers
“Design is the method of putting form and content together. Design, just as art, has multiple definitions; there is no single definition. Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that’s why it is so complicated.” — Paul Rand.

Day 1 of #Inktober2023 and already I can't ink for my life. 😂 Dream was today's prompt, and it'd take a dream just to draw because I had a sudden illness too.
My favourite dream would be for my favourite nostalgic things from the 1990's to come back, and of course, some fantasy stuff too, so that's what I tried to draw here.
Have decided for this year's inktober to focus on impactful compositions or concepts, and to do my pieces larger than A4. It's a challenge, one I'm going to make mistakes with, but I'm trying. I'm using Bockingford 300gsm paper, but oh my I can't remember for the life of me the exact paper dimensions. You'll just have to bear with me until I find them.
...Can you spot Smashy the #squirrel hiding in today's entry? Best of luck to everyone who tries! 🐿️
