Sad news, Robert Gordon the Rockabilly icon has passed. That voice, now silenced. His take on Rockabilly Boogie, Black Slacks, Red Hot, The Way I Walk, It’s Only Make Believe and other classics won’t be heard again in venues on earth, but luckily we’ve still got the records. He was one of my favorite NYC singers and I respected his talent immensely, as he did mine apparently since he asked me to take the place of one of my guitar heroes, Chris Spedding, in his band. I spent much of the 1990s seeing Robert, Chris, Bobby Chouinard & Rob Stoner play all over NYC; The Bottom Line, Lone Star Roadhouse and other joints - and it was always a fantastic show. It was my dream at that time to play those songs with him because Rockabilly music encompassed 4 styles of guitar playing that I loved; early Rock ’n Roll, Blues, Western Swing & BeBop Jazz. After seeing Chris with RG and being totally blown away, I started hanging out with him in the early 90s, at first as a student/teacher thing but it quickly evolved into what seemed to be a mutual admiration. Chris put my name forth in 1995 to tour with Robert in Europe but I turned down the offer (I regret that now). Finally in 2019 just before the pandemic hit we finally connected and were able to play a few shows before everything got shut down. It was a long 2 years of nothing for either of us and then when things reopened in 2021 we played more shows; some with Tony Garnier on bass & Thommy Price on drums, some with Rob Stoner or John Willoughby on bass & Albert Bouchard on drums. It was always a bit nerve-wracking, stepping into the role of Robert’s previous great guitar players; Chris Spedding Link Wray & Danny Gatton - but RG had faith in me, and I think I rose to the occasion. I got a call from his tour manager Bill Moser in early September that RG had just been diagnosed with an aggressive form of Leukemia. And this was after he’d just gone through major heart surgery and was just getting over that surgery. I knew he was not doing well and perhaps didn’t have long so getting in touch with him was on my “to do” list, but this morning I got the call that I missed my chance. The Vinyl of the Day is ‘Emotions in Motion’ by Billy Squier, 1982. Not many people remember, but for about 2-3 years Billy Squier was a huge star. His previous album ‘Don’t Say No’ set the stage with his biggest hit ‘The Stroke’, and the success of this album cemented his status with multiple hits such as ‘Everybody Wants You’, ‘Emotions In Motion’, ‘She’s A Runner’, ‘Keep Me Satisfied’ etc.. Billy was so successful at this point that along with his own headline tour, he opened multiple times for mega-bands such as Queen (who he was very close friends with, even having Freddy Mercury and Roger Taylor sing backgrounds here, and using Queen’s producer Reinhold Mack to produce this record), Foreigner, and the Who - and Andy Warhol even created the artwork for this album! The album is a very entertaining example of early 80s tight jeans/long hair pop-rock, flawlessly produced and with non-stop energy. ‘Don’t Say No’ was actually a slightly better seller, but I think this one is more consistent and just more fun. Put on your Member’s Only jacket and tease out your hair, and have a good time.

Emotions in Motion, the excellent follow-up to Billy Squier’s sophomore outing Don’t Say No, saw Squier rise from theater headliner to bona fide arena rock sensation by delivering his most consistent solo record to date. Or at least one just as good as its predecessor. On this slice of AOR heaven, Squier expands on the Led Zeppelin-influenced exploits of Don’t Say No. Right off the bat, Squier delivers an immediate blow to the head on the album’s opening triumvirate “Everybody Wants You,” “Emotions in Motion” (a distant cousin of Queen’s “Get Down Make Love” no doubt), and the moody “Learn How to Live.” Backed by longtime cronies – drummer Bobby Chouinard, guitarist Jeff Golub, and keyboard player Allan St. John – Squier effortlessly leads his ace band through the boogie-woogie of future concert staple “Keep Me Satisfied.” Squier also takes a few chances by veering into Rolling Stones territory on the horn-laced “Catch 22.” Borrowing heavily from “Tumbling Dice,” “Catch 22” foreshadows a style that would become more prevalent on future records like Enough Is Enough and Creatures of Habit. Emotions in Motion saw Squier establish himself as a major rock star, embarking on a tour as Queen’s support act on their U.S. Hot Space tour. As Queen’s popularity in America began to wane, Squier would steal their thunder resulting in a huge headline tour of his own shortly thereafter. Unfortunately, for the Boston rocker, 1984’s follow-up Signs of Life would yield the career-suicidal video for “Rock Me Tonite (which features Squier rolling around pink satin sheets) eclipsing the many merits of his earlier works.
