Skye's about to ruin this man's whole career.

Dad's been collecting social security in our names for the past few years. Big problem with that is that, except for this past year, we haven't been living with him. He's also been using the money for his own bills and fun instead of throwing Mom some for child support. He'll help out with a hundred or two every once in a while, but it's not enough.

Of course, Mom is understandably salty. Skye is too, since that money could go to buying her more clothes, as well as a desk so she can do art undisturbed in our bedroom. The social security for me ran out when I graduated high school, and I got a ton of clothes through a clothing exchange program at my university, so it's mostly between them now. Along with the fact that, while I've been paranoid about keeping all of my belongings in my room when we lived with my dad, they haven't, and several things have gone missing, including earbuds and stuffies.

Now, while Dad doesn't pay child support, he does give us a few things when he feels like it. Like the Bob Ross paint and brushes he got from the neighbors when he helped them clean or move or something. He's also a bit of a hoarder, so he has a plenty of stuff from yard sales stored in his back yard as well. Not air-conditioned or anything, though. Dry rot happens to a lot of it.

That said, he gave Skye a bunch of paints, because he knows she loves painting. Made sure to give her a pretty big tube of white, since she tragically ran out a while back after she made a small replica of the Rose Quarts portrait and Kare painted over it when she used the bathroom.

However, there's a problem with said tube of paint.

Just a week or two ago, she painted Shinobu Kocho on a poster-size canvas. Looks pretty great right now, actually. But that's because she was able to fix the melting, oozing mess of white that happened when she tried to seal her piece. Every other color, including another brand of white she had on hand but was almost out of, was just fine. Only the white Fremiere Acrylic Color from Dad was dissolving and streaking into the finish.

Understandably, she was pissed. Wanted to give him a piece of her mind, but didn't feel it was worth it when the time came and we were near his house on Sunday.

Cut to today.

She's got a setup on the floor to paint because she has no desk. Large piece of cardboard, pretty sure a collapsed moving box, a PS4 box up top, her box of brushes, and her two water cups. Decided to bring it out to the kitchen because that's better than her bed. Painted a pretty nice night sky with constellations and set it aside to dry while she started something else. Wanted to essentially gesso some older small pieces and start over. She doesn't own gesso, so she was gonna use her white acrylic.

I watched as the tube burst all over her.

She has no other white paint, and no other clothes to wear besides the dark capri jeggings and middle school gym shirt she just obliterated. Our washing machine is out of commission from the last tennants letting it leak and completely rust the bottom, and washing clothes by hand in the bathtub is a pain in the ass. Not to mention that even if all of her clothes were clean, "this is literally a fifth of my wardrobe."

She tried to salvage what paint wasn't on her clothes or cleaned up by me (I literally cleaned the entire floor today, and this happened, so I had to do something to prolong my work), so she did what she had originally planned, and then played around making handprints with the extra. Can't put it back into the tube because it burst, so she has to either use it or waste it.

Oh, she's fucking livid.

Tomorrow's Sunday again. Over peanut butter cookie dough and chocolate syrup, she explains to me that when we're near his house, she's gonna start painting her hand, so by the time we're there, she can just hop out of the car and smack him with it. If it weren't all gone, I'd tell her to use the infamous white paint that's been making her life hard. Instead, she wants to use red, and possibly yellow, because she's not using yellow for much of anything and she has a big-ass tube, also from Dad.

She's also conspiring to take his washer, and I agree. He's never used it that much in the first place, choosing to instead wash his clothes in a bucket out back, so he wouldn't miss it very much. Don't worry, we thought about his landlady in this as well. Hers broke a while back, so the one in the garage actually belongs to our dad. Hers got taken away by the city when they made him clean out his yard.

She also wants to steal his Yamaha keyboard and possibly Ralph (poor baby), as well as Mom going to the social security office and getting that money mailed to us. I just want my candy-colored bike out of his garage, and that car parked across the street if Dad still wants to give it to me.

I'm gonna go clear some space on my phone now. I gotta record this shit tomorrow.

These are dealing with situations that have been cropping up in the last few months.

I am particularly irritated with people who are trying to drive sales but pretending to be normal users. I'm not calling out names, but... some people need to behave.

Always Credit The Work

Reported as: Posted content without proper credit.

The original artist should always be credited. It is a terrible disgrace to claim art is yours when really, its something you found on the internet or photographed somewhere else.

No Hidden Sales Operations

In 2020 it became apparent some of the commercial painting outfits were using Reddit as a channel to drive sales using salespeople as paid commentators: without being up front about the company they were representing.

This is dishonest.

The principle I expect commercial operatives to follow is transparency, authenticity, and accountability. I know this is a multi-cultural environment; if you're a commercial operative, I expect you to take the time to learn those concepts and adhere exactly to them, in the spirit of the law (another principle), not the letter.

If you're a salesperson for a painting outfit, or a gallery operator looking to sell your artists' work, - or other commercial operative who is not the painter of the specific artwork involved - you must be up front about what you're doing and who you're representing. You are expected to operate as a sophisticated internet user, deeply familiar with business, online, and reddit etiquette, because it is your job to know this. Non-commercial users are not held to this standard, because it is not their job.

If you are spamming - please look up what spam is - or are being a jerk, I will ban you without warning. This is largely a minimally commercial space for the painters themselves. Commercial agents should respect this.

If abuse of this policy happens, I will unilaterally ban all third-party sales efforts, both deleting the posts and banning the users; all commercial operations will be between painters and clients directly.

Finally: Astroturfing sales efforts will result in a permanent ban, with prejudice.

Consider all of you salespeople on notice.

Kelly Gagnon, User Experience Designer

This interview was originally published in The Career Strategist series on the Hired blog on October 10, 2018.

This is the first installment of a three-part interview series with some of the designers we have at Hired. We’ll begin with a discussion with Kelly Gagnon, a UX Design Lead, about her experience in the world of design, her work as a user experience designer, and her time at Hired.

Brittany: Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Kelly: I’m a designer. People tell me I work in tech, but I don’t consider myself in tech. Technology is the medium. I solve problems for humans. If I were designing for print or large format displays, or logos, I would use the same design skills.

Brittany: How did you get into design?

Kelly: I studied oil painting for 7 years (ages 10 to 17, in the Bob Ross style). My teacher encouraged me to go to art school; my parents thought I should focus on something practical so I could support myself. So I went to MassArt in Boston and got my BFA in Graphic Design, a compromise. Without that art teacher, I would probably still be living in Northern Maine, married to a potato farmer. I didn’t have a back-up plan.

Brittany: How long did you work in graphic design before you started getting involved in user experience design?

Kelly: My first job was designing book covers. I learned the power of designing the holistic experience, from the cover, to the store display, to marketing. I became an interactive art director shortly after, designing countless websites and internal company tools, like digital training modules and tools for sales teams. I did that for years. In 2004 I went to my first UX conference and was introduced to Jared Spool. Everything changed for me after that. I went from focusing on what the business needed to focusing on what the customer needed, which is the core of UX design.

Brittany: What kind of work are you responsible for at Hired?

Kelly: I’m responsible for the Candidate experience, end-to-end, from research, UX strategy, interaction / flows to visual design.

Brittany: Can you describe your day-to-day as a UX design lead?

Kelly: My day-to-day varies considerably. Some weeks I’m in user research, others I’m heads-down creating UI. Sometimes both at the same time. As a generalist, it’s important to protect your energy. Constant context switching can be draining.

Brittany: What are some projects you’ve worked on recently?

Kelly: Right now I’m conducting a research study trying to learn more about what candidates are doing during the interview process. Then we’ll use this to ideate solutions for work we are planning for Q4 or Q1.

Brittany: How do you approach UX design at Hired? In your experience, does it range greatly from company-to-company?

Kelly: I’m a fan of lean UX methodologies. I first read Jeff Gothelf’s book, Lean UX, in 2012. It immediately clicked for me because it works to align design, engineers, and business people. That was something I was struggling with at the time. I started using those methods in my projects right away. Some worked better than others, but I kept iterating and adjusting them. No project or team is exactly the same, so the same frameworks and methods that are successful on one project, might not work on another. Over time, I’ve gotten pretty good at knowing what will work and what won’t. I still try to learn what has worked for others, and I’ll experiment with it.

Brittany: In your opinion, can you describe the work of a great UX designer? What contributions do they make to the overall product?

Kelly: There’s no UX without research. We should not design for ourselves. A great UX designer will leverage research and validate assumptions. They design for behaviors and tasks and support the humans using our product.

Brittany: Do you have a personal design, or specifically UX design, philosophy you live by or guidelines you follow?

Kelly: This is one that is changing for me right now. Six months ago I would have said with confidence, Lean UX methodologies applied to Agile process is everything. Now I’m not so sure Agile is working for anyone anymore. It’s great for velocity, but bad for innovation, and I’m starting to get tired of velocity. I’m wondering if this process needs to evolve into something new; it’s a process that is almost 20 years old.

Brittany: Where do you find inspiration for your work in user experience design?

Kelly: I design for humans, I get inspiration from them, what they are thinking, feeling, doing, and I work to answer: how can I be of service to them?

Brittany: What areas of UX design are often overlooked?

Kelly: Service Design: design that can solve business and organizational problems. Many people think designers just make things look good. Everything about design and design thinking methodologies is geared towards problem solving. Why not take those methods and apply them to the design of your company? That’s powerful.

Brittany: What can we expect to see in terms of UX design from Hired in the future?

Kelly: A new style guide is in the works. This should help the team go faster and be consistent. We’re also developing product principles and a working charter. These are tools that will help unite the design team, as well as help us talk to our partners about how we work, and why we make the decisions we do.

Brittany: Do you have any advice for someone interested in pursuing UX design?

Kelly: Throughout my career I wanted my work to speak for itself. I wanted to be an expert and I spent much of my time learning heuristics and best practices. I wish someone had told me that I also needed to build relationships, and focus on team alignment and communication. Letting my work speak for itself caused me to struggle to get people to see the vision. It’s better now that I’ve been focusing on my facilitation and leadership skills. I wonder sometimes if I had focused more on building relationships if I would have had more opportunities.

Nostalgia marketing is the advertising equivalent of comfort food. In a time when most marketing focuses heavily on the future, it transports us back to a simpler place where our current problems don’t matter and the hustle and bustle of modernity just melts away. Instead of anticipating the next great thing, nostalgia marketing urges us to focus on the things we already know are great. We know at a gut level that nostalgia gives our lives a feeling of meaning and continuity, but you may be surprised to learn it can also make us looser with our wallets. A study published in the Journal of Consumer Research found that nostalgic feelings made participants more willing to spend money on consumer goods and services. It would appear that advertisers have caught on. Over the past five years, nostalgic ads have been popping up left and right — with millennials as their main target.

Although these ads are getting more common, marketers have known that millennials would be a nostalgia-fueled generation for some time now. Even in 2015, when many millennials were still young adults, nostalgia was a hot topic in publications like Digiday. “Millennials are coming of age in an age of economic turmoil — a difficult job market,” Cassandra McIntosh, a senior insights analyst at Exponential, told Digiday. “Therefore, they end up romanticizing simpler times much more — even those times they weren’t around for.” To give you inspiration for your own nostalgic campaigns, we selected 15 examples of advertisements that use nostalgia marketing. Watch them and see if you get the telltale bittersweet pangs associated with nostalgic feelings. Examples of Nostalgic Ads 1. Motorola Razr In the early 2000s, prior to smartphones, one of Motorola’s most popular cellphones was a tiny, flat flip phone called the Razr. Despite its number-based keyboard and a small screen, people loved it for it’s design and simplicity. In 2019, Motorola gained buzz when it re-introduced a new and improved Razr which featured a folding touchscreen when opened.  In the commercial announcement, you see an old-school Razr lifting off of a table and flying through the air as its old layers peel off to reveal a new design. The phone then opens to reveal the Android-like touch screen. 

2. Nintendo Many children of the ’80s and ’90s remember playing Nintendo-based video games with their siblings. But, for the children growing up with siblings, many also remember the sad feelings related to growing apart or drifting away from a relative. This commercial highlights both of those memories by telling the story of two Nintendo-loving brothers who grow apart, argue as teenagers, and then happily reunite as adults to play the new Nintendo Switch together.

This commercial not only reminds people of what it was like to grow up with siblings, but it also reminds you of the great fun you had playing video games as a child. Then, because the brothers connect and chat virtually as the play Switch games at the end, it shows how Nintendo’s technology has evolved to connect old friends and relatives all around the world. 3. Australia Tourism Board Instead of promoting a traditional ad that simply showed off Australia’s most beautiful destinations, Australia decided to disguise a tourism ad as a star-studded trailer for a fictional reboot to the ’80s film, Crocodile Dundee. 

As those who watched the original Dundee series get excited by clips from the film, starring Chris Hemsworth and Jason Sudeikis, its revealed that Hemsworth tricked Sudeikis into a tourism ad. Despite the trickery, Hemsworth and Sudeikis still both agree that their trip to Australia was still the best vacation they’d ever taken.  This was a clever way to embrace the television and movie reboot trend of 2018 and 2019, while still highlighting the best Australia has to offer for tourism. Because it features actors who are popular in the present day, it’s also hilarious for both people who followed the Dundee films or either of the main characters in the fake reboot. 4. Spotify In 2016, music-streaming service Spotify unveiled a new spokesperson — er, spokes-dragon — in a 30-second ad produced by Wieden + Kennedy New York. Falkor and his boy companion Atreyu (now a heavily bearded 44-year-old man) are both characters from the beloved 1984 fantasy film The NeverEnding Story. W+K even got the original actors to reprise their roles (Noah Hathaway as Atreyu and Alan Oppenheimer as the voice of Falkor). The pair appear just as the film left them over 20 years ago: gliding through the clouds while the movie’s dramatic theme song plays in the background. “I can’t believe people still listen to this song!” Atreyu exclaims. His dragon agrees, they share a laugh, and the two speed off into a grainy, ’80s quality CG sky.

5. Freia The tagline of Freia, a Norweigan chocolate company, is “Et lite stykke Norge” (A little piece of Norway). This spot for the company produced by SMFB Oslo fully encapsulates the sentiment in a simple, joyful way. The plot follows a Norweigan expat in New York navigating a hectic life as a fashion stylist. When he returns home to his apartment one evening, he finds a half-eaten bar of Freia chocolate in his otherwise empty fridge. After just one bite, he’s inspired to hop on a plane back to Norway to visit his father and soak up the majestic landscape of his homeland. The ad ends with the stylist discovering a modest hair salon for sale in what is presumably his hometown.  The message is clear: A taste of Freia chocolate is inherently connected to Norway, no matter where in the world you may be. 

6. Adobe Bob Ross — the beloved ’80s painting guru who passed away in 1995 — experienced an unexpected resurgence in popularity in 2016. After Netflix added his classic TV show, The Joy of Painting, to its streaming lineup, Ross became a trending topic on Instagram. Adobe took notice, and decided to pay homage to the late painter in a series of tutorial videos promoting their new Adobe Photoshop Sketch for the iPad Pro. Authenticity was central to this nostalgic campaign. Adobe and agency Lekker Media collaborated with Bob Ross Inc. to make sure every detail was accurate, right down to the brand of clothing Ross wore on his show. Children’s book illustrator Chad Cameron, who plays Ross in the series, channels the artist’s relaxed, unpretentious demeanor perfectly. “Bob’s wish was to inspire as many people as possible to be creative and to share it with others,” Joan Kowalski, media director at Bob Ross Inc., told Adweek. “Adobe’s ‘Joy of Sketching’ series reminds us that a company as big as Adobe shares in that hope.”

7. Oikos Although it originally aired from 1987-1995, Full House has become a nostalgic childhood symbol to multiple generations thanks to syndication. But before Netflix revived the show with a 2016 reboot, Dannon reunited a few of the show’s stars in an ad for Oikos, the company’s line of Greek yogurts. John Stamos is joined by his former cast members Bob Saget and Dave Coulier in this Y&R Vinizius-produced spot. The trio doesn’t explicitly reprise their Full House roles, but the dynamic is undeniably reminiscent of their days on the sitcom.

8. Nike In 1973, Billie Jean King won a tennis match against male player Bobby Riggs, which was coined “The Battle of the Sexes.” The historic tennis game was the first time a female tennis player was matched against a male. In and before the late 1950s, men were seen as superior athletes and breadwinners in society. Prior to the tennis match with King, who was only 25, even Riggs said that he could beat a woman at his age of 55. King’s tennis match win proved Riggs wrong. It also proved that men and women could compete equally on the tennis field and in other sports. On a bigger scale, it further empowered women, who were often stereotyped as wives, homemakers, or secretaries at the time. With King’s win, it became harder to ignore that gender stereotypes were false and that women could win and even lead amongst men. During the match, King wore an iconic pair of blue Adidas tennis shoes. Years later, to celebrate the 45th anniversary of King’s win, Adidas launched a limited edition line of BJK shoes with the female tennis legend’s face and initials on each pair. To announce the shoe line, Adidas launched a series of simple commercials showing Billie Jean King spray-painting piles of shoes blue. Here’s an example of one of the ads:

To further promote the line, Adidas also had booths at the U.S. Open tennis match where fans could bring any brand of shoes and have an artist paint them blue with Adidas’ special BJK logo. According to Adidas, the overall campaign led to a 20% boost in tennis shoe sales. And, now that the campaign is over, people are auctioning off these limited edition shoes on eBay for upwards of $1,000. 9. Tesco Nothing screams nostalgia like old home movies. In this extended holiday ad from British grocery chain Tesco, we watch a family grow and age over the years through the lens of their Christmas home videos. Set to a poignant theme, the ad is intended to stir up fond holiday memories for viewers. “We wanted to show what a real Christmas is all about — not a perfect, airbrushed one — but the ones we recognize from our own lives,” David Wood, Tesco’s U.K. marketing director, told Adweek. The ad was produced by Wieden + Kennedy, London.

10. Microsoft Although Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is no more, this 2013 spot for the web browser earned viral recognition and a Webby Award nomination. “You might not remember us,” the ad’s narrator begins, “but we met in the ’90s.” The commercial goes on to highlight all things ’90s — fanny packs, Tamagotchi, bowl haircuts — even the Oregon Trail PC game makes an appearance. Column Five Media, the creative agency behind the ad, set out to create a nostalgia-driven viral ad that would reintroduce Internet Explorer to ’90s kids. “The idea of a brand like Internet Explorer being forward-thinking enough to make such a story-focused, Gen Y-centered commercial was pretty newsworthy,” the agency wrote in a behind-the-scenes blog post. “Focusing that story on ’90s nostalgia, which we knew was popular with Gen Y and not yet fully realized in video form, is what made [the ad] shareworthy.”

11. Chili’s Chili’s ads are usually characterized by close-up shots of glistening hamburgers, sizzling bacon, and french fries still glowing with fryer oil. So this 2016 ad produced by Boston-based agency Hill Holliday was a departure from the casual dining chain’s typical go-to formula. The commercial depicts the Chili’s origin story through a series of retro vignettes. We see the laid-back founders playing ring toss, lounging on the hood of their car, and — of course — flipping classic Chili’s burgers in their first restaurant. The ad taps into traditional Americana — a form of nostalgia for small town American life, middle class values, and neighborhood restaurants where everyone knows your name.

12. Apple Apple regularly features celebrities in their advertising, but they made a notably nostalgic casting decision for this iPhone 6s spot. Everyone’s favorite sweet-toothed Muppet, Cookie Monster, might have switched to a more balanced diet, but he appears whipping up a batch of his favorite chocolate chip cookies in this ad. TBWA/Media Arts Lab is the agency behind the ad, and they even released a series of “bloopers” featuring the beloved childhood character.

13. Target The nostalgic force is strong in this Target video promoting Star Wars: The Force Awakens merchandise. As part of a larger campaign to encourage fans to share their Star Wars memories online, Deutsch LA produced this two-minute compilation of Star Wars fans’ home movies. In the video, young fans dressed as little Princess Leias, Luke Skywalkers, and Han Solos brandish lightsabers and give their best Chewbacca impressions, all while the classic Star Wars theme plays in the background. The result is an endearing campaign that’s sure to resonate with longtime fans and new converts alike.

14. Bacardi For their 150th anniversary back in 2012, Bacardi released a series of print and television ads showcasing the brand’s party-starting heritage. The trip down memory lane was intended to give the company a shot of authenticity, reminding consumers that Bacardi has stood the test of time. The goal according to Leo Premutico, co-founder of WPP agency Johannes Leonardo, the agency behind the ad, was “to depict a moment in time that lives in history” and offer “an eye to what’s next, an exciting future.”

15. McDonald’s When McDonald’s removed antibiotics and artificial preservatives from their chicken this year, they wanted an ad campaign that not only informed consumers about these changes, but also tapped into nostalgia surrounding their famous nuggets. “There’s an undeniable level of nostalgia tied to the McDonald’s brand and its food,” Britt Nolan, Leo Burnett USA’s chief creative officer, told Adweek. “We set out to capture that relationship in a sincere, simple way that today’s parents can relate to and feel good about sharing with their own kids.”

How to Nail Nostalgia The key to nailing nostalgia is to understand what motivates your audiences, how they were raised, and where their deepest interests lie. To do this, do a little research or develop buyer persona’s that grew up in certain generations to learn what makes them think. Weeks after a U.S. military drone was shot down by Iran in the Persian Gulf, tensions rose further in the Strait of Hormuz yesterday after the Pentagon and U.S. Central Command announced that the U.S. Navy had shot down an Iranian drone. The drone was allegedly shot down, or taken down in some unspecified way, by the USS Boxer, an amphibious warship which carries up to 2,000 Marines and can put them ashore with landing craft carried in a stern well-deck or by helicopter from its flight deck. The Boxer is at the center of a task force carrying the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit into the Gulf. The Pentagon’s statement was bare and Central Command did not add much other than to say that warnings were issued before the drone was taken down. Iran offered virtually no statement other than to acknowledge that some sort of incident had taken place. This also comes on the heels of a video showing boats allegedly belonging to belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps circling and then closing in on an oil tanker that had gone missing recently and which the Iranian foreign ministry announced that the Iranians had reported that it had been disabled. Now it seems that Iran seized the oil tanker for allegedly trying to smuggle stolen Iranian crude oil out of the Gulf. Not even this is completely clear, however, and as both Britain and the U.S. send more ships to the region, the amount of uncertainty going forward is certain to increase.

 The night before last at a rally in North Carolina, President Donald Trump continued to rail against Rep. Ilhad Omar (D-Minn.) and, amidst the frenzied energy in the room, the audience began to cry out “send her back,” in an apparent mimic of a tweet the president sent out days earlier and directed at four Democratic congresswomen, including Omar. The cries mirrored in tone and anger those leveled at 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Amidst widespread condemnation, which is somewhat more muted among Republican members of Congress, Trump appeared yesterday to walk back the events of the rally, telling reporters that he did not care for the chant and asserted that he tried to interrupt it by beginning to speak again quickly (something which video of the event, which shows Trump listening to the crowd for a full 13 seconds before saying anything, immediately belies). There is no question at this point that Trump sees more value in throwing red meat to his base supporters, which includes unabashed white nationalists, than in being conciliatory or bridge-building in any way, and yet there are apparently still advisors within the White House and members of Congress with connections to the White House, who are able to get through to the president that, on occasion, his statements or actions go too far. It remains an open question how many such individuals are among his 2020 campaign staff.

Yesterday at a bail hearing in New York, a federal judge issued a 33-page decision in which he denied bail to multi-millionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein. Epstein’s defense lawyers had proposed a rather bold bail agreement in which Epstein would be released from jail but confined to his Manhattan home—a mansion rumored to be worth approximately $75 million—and guarded by private security force paid for by Epstein out of his own pocket. Epstein would also voluntarily give up his passport and have his private plane—though which one is not known since he is rumored to own several—de-registered from the FAA, preventing it from flying. Prosecutors responded to the defense’s bail proposal by rejecting it and introducing evidence that Epstein had a safe in his Manhattan home in which FBI agents discovered, among other things, a Saudi Arabian passport under a fake name and piles of cash and diamonds. U.S. District Judge Richard Berman decided that, under the circumstances, Epstein was certainly a flight risk and would instead remain confined leading up to his trial. As Epstein, who has lived an outrageously luxurious lifestyle, sits behind bars, the question now becomes whether he feels enough pressure to begin working with prosecutors to give up other perpetrators; and over the years Epstein entertained and became friends with dozens of very wealthy and powerful men in this country and outside of it. If so, it is not impossible that some extremely high profile men could stand accused of a litany of sex-based crimes. Either way, it seems like Epstein’s days of using his enormous wealth to escape consequences for his actions, may finally be over.

In 1984, Coca Cola, the original and most iconically American soft drink brand, announced to great fanfare and press coverage the Lincoln Center in New York, that it had created a new recipe for Coke with an improved taste. Anyone reading these words knows exactly what happened next: New Coke almost immediately bombed as a product and Coca Cola was virtually forced to pull New Coke from the market after only two months and reintroduce its old recipe, now branded as “Coke Classic.” It is one of the most well-known cautionary tales in corporate American history: if you change a well-known product, especially one as closely associate with Americana as Coke, there will be consequences. The only problem with this cautionary tale is that it is not true. New Coke was introduced in 1985 precisely because “Coke Classic” sales were slipping and the company was thought to be a hidebound American company unable to adapt to the times. This was compounded by Pepsi’s successful marketing campaign touting its attraction to younger Americans, who were called the “Pepsi Generation.” There are actually threads in the public reaction to and takedown of New Coke that would be familiar to anyone today who has spent time on social media, especially Twitter: one person’s cranky opinion can be used to coalesce with the minority opinion of others in a group setting, opinions that might otherwise have never felt important enough to express. At its core, the demise of New Coke is not at all about whether or not people actually preferred the taste of Coke Classic, but is instead bout individuals looking for and apparently seeing the opportunity for a quick payout and other absurd details that I have left out of this summary; seriously you need to read this to see the pants-on-head level of crazy and existential fear that was invoked because a new soft drink was introduced.

This article, rather convincingly, surmises a number of social issues and trends; being told that you can be anything is not as empowering as its proclaimers like to believe, and can instead inflict a serious burden on the receiver of such a homily. The order and tradition of the convent has become appealing to Millennials, as has the lack of personal choice that goes in to committing one to such a life. But what is most interesting about this article is that, like The Young Pope writ large, this young new generation of Americans expressing interesting in the Church and in the convent, are yearning for the most conservative elements of both.

As we enter the latter half of 2019 and all questions related to the 2020 census have now been settled (famous last words with this administration), we can now begin to surmise what the next census will mean for redistricting battles that are sure to follow in 2022 and beyond.
