“After which point, police did all the work,” Athena finishes. 

“They may have a point,” Bobby says to Michael. 

Michael sighs. “Alright, Athena. Just spill.”

“Candi and Preston are investors in an animal cage manufacturing company,” Athena explains. “Significant investors. On the board and everything. That company is owned by a parent company, which also owns the pet store chain that was the trafficking front. That parent company? Owned and operated by Candi’s brother.”

“So they’re all tied up in it?” Bobby asks. 

Athena nods. “Their level of complicity is yet to be determined, but they aren’t innocent.”

Michael whistles. “We knew it.”

Another round of sighs from the table.

“But, wait,” Bobby says. “What about the smoke detector?”

“What about the smoke detector?” David asks. 

“Where does it factor in with any of this?” Bobby asks.

“Honey,” Athena shakes her head. “It doesn’t.” 

“What? Yes, it does,” Bobby says. “It was our first sign they were up to no good.”

Harry and May laugh. 

Bobby doesn’t see why. Fire safety isn’t a joke. 

“The smoke alarm has absolutely nothing to do with anything, Bobby,” Athena says. 

Michael pats him on the shoulder. “Maybe it was an omen.”

Michael and David leave a few days later. 

The rest of their visit has been strikingly normal. May and Michael have made up. They seem to have had a conversation about May’s newly realized orientation, too, though Bobby wasn’t part of it. Regardless, he’s happy for her. There have been no more mysteries, and they had Hen and Karen back over for a proper dinner. Athena seems much more pleased with everyone now.

“Come back any time,” Bobby tells them as they head out. “Seriously.”

“If you get any new neighbors, you know who to call,” Michael says.

David shakes his head. “Maybe you two should come to Miami. Athena, your home state?”

Athena smiles. “Maybe. We could use a trip that doesn’t end in a boat capsizing.”

“Good,” David smiles. “Call ahead if you do and we can plan on how to keep Sherlock and Watson here out of trouble.”

“Who is who?” Bobby asks.

“I don’t think we want to know,” Michael laments. 

They hug, say their goodbyes, and then Michael and David are gone.

“They’re great,” Bobby says as he watches their rental drive away. “Maybe we should go to Miami.”

Athena gives him a stern look. “I will make you sign a written contract not to poke your nose into anyone’s suspicious business if we do.”

Bobby laughs. “I think I can live with that.”

Ravi frowns. “How long?”

“Have I been like this?” Buck asks. 

Ravi nods.

“2018,” Buck says. “Not even three years.”

“Ah,” Ravi says, understanding. “Hey, you’ll get the hang of it. It’s a process.”

“So, you’ve had a lot longer?” Buck assumes.

“Yep. Since I was thirteen,” he says.

“Whoa,” Buck says. “How’d that happen?”

“I was dying,” Ravi says. “Cancer. My parents prayed for a solution and… Well, here I am.”

“Wow,” Buck exhales. 

“You?”

“We were replying to a plane crash,” Buck says. “Went down over the water. Bobby almost drowned. I was desperate for a way to save him.”

“Damn,” Ravi says. “So he knows?”

Buck nods. “Everyone but you.”

“That’s good. Good to have a community,” Ravi says. 

“Well, hey! That’s true!” Buck exclaims. “And now you’re here, and we can be each other’s community! Oh man, how great is this? Like mer-besties.”

Ravi’s expression twitches. “Oh, yeah… So great.”

Buck grins. This is going to be awesome. There’s finally someone he knows that’s just like him!

So Ravi is also a merman. Cool. Great. Eddie doesn’t care. Eddie is actually so totally cool about that. Why would it bother him? Trick question. It doesn’t. Even a little. 

If something about it was going to bother Eddie, it wouldn’t be the fact that Ravi is a merman. That’s not something Eddie holds prejudice about, obviously. He’s very open minded to magical beings, as evidenced by his dating history.

Well, he’ll be pissed and disappointed and they just got Eddie back… But again. Whatever. Not his choice. 

Instead of fretting, he decides to call his wife. 

“Hi, Bobby,” she answers after two rings. “Shift going well?” 

“Well, it’s not going badly, exactly,” he says. “But it has been weird.”

“Weird how?” 

“Well, first of all, it finally happened…”

“Wait. It, like…” 

“Yeah.”

“Well, well. I had almost given up.” 

“Me, too.”

“Are they causing you trouble?” 

Bobby chuckles. “Not as of yet.”

“Then, as of now, I am happy for them.”

Chim is incredibly glad to mark the twelve hour halfway point of their shift by immediately falling asleep. Is it early? Sure. Does he have anything better to do? No. Besides, he and Maddie are going to have another baby any week now. He might as well bank some extra hours. 

This plan is met with one tiny hitch. 

He wakes up four minutes later. 

He knows it’s exactly four minutes, because he checks his phone clock. Annoying. Chim is usually a pretty sound sleeper. Especially when he knows there isn’t a child nearby that might wake him. No, he doesn’t count Buck. Despite that, Chim is awake. Awake and seemingly missing any sleepiness he felt earlier. 

What the hell? Four minutes is not enough.  

Chim’s brain starts racing. Of course he can’t sleep. Oh god, why didn’t he think about this before? If he sleeps, he wakes up tomorrow. If he wakes up tomorrow, this shift ends and he goes home. And as horrible as this shift has been and as much as he loves home, that presents one enormous problem. 

He cannot tell Maddie that he found Buck and Eddie being nasty in the supply closet. 

Nasty because sex on work property is nasty. Not because it’s Buck and Eddie. Well, a little bit because it’s Buck and Eddie. But not for hateful reasons. For brother-in-law reasons. 

The point is, Chim can’t tell. Just Buck? Sure, he’d tell. But he can’t do that to Eddie, right? This morning, as far as anyone was concerned, Eddie Diaz was a straight guy. Any word to the contrary is his story to tell. Not Chim’s.

Except that means he has to keep a secret from Maddie. His wife. Buck’s sister. The person he tells everything to.

The demon frowns. “Okay.”

“Stay,” Eddie says again, holding up a hand like he’s talking to a dog.

Then, he turns and heads to the door. When he opens it, Eddie is stunned to see Buck standing on the stoop, bleary eyed and bedraggled. Sort of like he just drove across the continent. 

“Buck?” Eddie gapes.

“Oh my god! Eddie!” Buck practically bursts. “You’re okay!”

“Me?” Eddie demands. “What are you doing here?”

“You scared the shit out of me and didn’t answer my texts!” Buck scolds. 

“I fell asleep!” Eddie protests.

“After a very concerning message!” Buck reminds him. “What was I supposed to think?”

Eddie pauses. He processes what has happened.

“I had a bad night so you drove to Texas?” He asks weakly. 

“Well, yeah!” Buck throws his hands up. “I needed to make sure you weren’t freaking out alone!”

Eddie is caught off guard by how much this affects him. His throat tightens. His eyes water. Buck really did all that for him. Just like subletting. Just like everything he has always done. 

“Thank you,” Eddie rasps. 

Buck’s expression softens. “Hey, you’re welcome.”

Eddie steps forward to give him a hug. “You’re the best.”

“Ah, it was half selfish,” Buck admits. “I also just miss you.”

Eddie chuckles. “I miss you, too.”

“You’re really okay?” Buck asks. 

Eddie pulls out of the hug. “Uh…”

He thinks of the demon child in his kitchen.

“Eddie?” Buck presses.

NFR Reviews #5: Nanook of the North

Director Robert Flaherty first came into contact with the Canadian Inuit through a series of prospecting expeditions funded by Sir William Mackenzie to size up the area’s potential for building railroads and mineral mines. His first attempt at a film on the Inuit ended in the negative burning up and him disregarding the surviving copy as bad and boring. The solution was to make a single composite character to illustrate an entire way of life that existed in the arctic landscapes east of the Hudson Bay. The original attempt failed due to lack of focus. Focusing on one person, or even one family, gives a feature-length film a consistent throughline for audiences to follow and connect to. However, constructing a character to represent a whole ethnic group runs the risk of the director’s biases getting in the way of responsible documentary filmmaking. 

The harsh conditions in which Nanook lives are almost as much a character as the people. The opening shot is of ice floes bobbing in water, and the final scene is a three-way edit between wind blowing over stark white plains, the family sleeping in an igloo, and snow-encrusted dogs guarding outside. According to the images on film, the lives of Nanook and his family are dominated by hard work to attain the basic needs of food and shelter. Several scenes are dedicated to hunting walrus, fish, seal, and fox; one sequence is the building of an igloo. Revillon Freres, a trading company who’d been active in the fur business since the 19th century, sponsored this movie! After the film, Nanook’s image was used in marketing to sell products disparate as rental cars, phonographs, and refrigerators. One Stillwell Auto Delivery car ad drew a comparison dividing him from the audience: “he can’t step into an auto and enjoy the wonderful scenery and boulevards of our Southland. But you can!’’ Allakariallak (Nanook’s real name) died two years after the film was released. Initial reports indicated starvation as the cause of death, but it was later revealed as tuberculosis, possibly brought by foreigners such as Flaherty.

The details of the hunt are where Flaherty starts veering off from truth. The Inuit had incorporated modern technology like rifles and boat motors into their lives by 1922, but the film’s version exclusively shows traditional methods of harpoons, spears, and paddles. In filming the walrus hunt scene, hunters begged Flaherty to use a rifle to help them, but he refused and kept the camera rolling until they killed the animal using older tools. This pattern bleeds into the non-hunting scenes. Film Nanook is amazed by a gramophone and bites into a record, while the real person already knew what it was. The outfits are outdated as well. The Inuit are portrayed as museum pieces frozen in time and unaffected by other cultures around them. Flaherty believed white men had pushed Inuit culture to near extinction, but didn’t put any examples of that in the movie in an attempt to save a vanishing culture he admired. He claimed to avoid the subject matter of the fur trade in order to have Revillon Freres as sponsor without an egregious conflict of interest. However, fur traders do appear in one scene to give Nanook’s child castor oil and show him the gramophone. 

Shaomik Inukpuk, manager of the town where the movie was filmed, found value in the sequences as education for both younger generations of the community and outsiders who knew nothing about the Inuit. It shows how things have changed in the last century, especially regarding the more nomadic lifestyles and colder climates of the past. Inuk throat singer Tanya Tagaq, while creating a soundtrack for the film, had mixed feelings: embarrassment and frustration with dated stereotypes, but also pride in seeing her ancestors’ resilience. In my opinion, showing traditional hunting methods isn’t an issue on its own, but showing both ways of hunting or even adding the full context in intertitles would’ve given audiences a more truthful portrayal. 

Its major innovations in documentary filmmaking also put the film into an uncanny valley by today’s standards: not intended to be a fictional film but too staged and manipulated to be a documentary, even down to the main character's name being changed. Possible reasons for the change from Allakariallak to Nanook included "nanuq" meaning “bear” and fitting a heroic hunter, a tribute to the practice of the Inuit nicknaming white people, or simply to make the title more marketable to white moviegoers. Much of nonfiction filmmaking’s earliest years consisted of pointing the camera at people or places and interfering as little as possible. Nanook evolved from the travelogue, a type of actuality showing foreign locations for audiences to vicariously experience without spending money on a vacation. While possibly not the first feature-length documentary, it proved the format could be a box-office hit. 

Flaherty included elements of fiction filmmaking into his documentary: a structured piece with a main character and side characters. There’s also the symbolism of one character representing a variety of Inuit with whom Flaherty interacted instead of being a single person. The “plot” is a mix of daily life and the conflict of survival in a desolate environment. Director bias was probably inevitable on some level. Even deciding what to film and what to edit into a movie creates a layer of it. The Nanook character had several different influences shaping what he’d be in the final film. The Inuit participants often watched footage and provided suggestions, but the film was also impacted by Flaherty’s own opinions and the pressure to create something widely marketable to non-Inuit audiences. Flaherty defended the inaccuracies by claiming “one often has to distort a thing in order to capture its true spirit.” However, the distortions form a pattern to portray the subjects as simplistic and unaware of technological change. In 1922, other parts of the world didn’t know much about the Inuit. While the film acted as an awareness-raiser, its lack of context and staged images had more power over audiences and spread misconceptions. Alternative and varied portrayals, especially ones that gave the Inuit more creative control, were harder to access in mainstream media. Nanook of the North popularized a then-unique structure for nonfiction moviemaking that blended in elements of fictional film to give viewers one focus character to get invested in. However, it was also necessary for the medium to innovate past this to avoid making the same mistakes.

Shelton built a studio in the home with views of the water, which was particularly important to him. Because of his busy schedule, Shelton was forced to record his last several albums from wherever he was when it was time to release new music.

Scott Hendricks, his Nashville-based producer, would fly to meet Shelton and they would scout locations to record vocals. Sometimes it was in the bedroom or closet of a rental house. Other times they worked out of a hotel suite. The habit — while successful — wore on Shelton and he wanted a permanent solution.

“I’ve gotten to the point where I want to do more from home than before,” he said, explaining the vocals for his new album were recorded from his new studio. “We’d sing for a while and then we’d go out on the boat for a while and eat and there was drinking. It felt different. It was way more fun to make this record than I’ve ever had making a record.”

Stefani was sometimes there and assumed the role of caretaker. Shelton remembers she brought down a tray of those “champagne drinks with the orange juice” about 10:30 a.m. just as he was about to start recording.

“It set the tone for the rest of the making of the album,” he said. “It was like, ‘We are at the lake. And this is country music. Let’s do this the way we’re supposed to do it.’ It went from mimosas to beers to a blur, actually.”
