Thursday August 2
Our safari drives have been truly incredible. We saw many zebras today. We also saw water buffalo. The most impressive thing we saw was a leopard stalking a lone puku while it made a distress call. We watched it follow it for about 15 minutes. Luckily (for me and the puku) we didn’t actually witness the kill (we left them alone to do their thing). It was really one of the craziest things we’ve ever seen. Leopards are big! We also saw an African civet (in addition to all the cool animals we saw on day one). We saw some boabob trees - quintessential African savannah. When we got back from our morning drive there was a mama elephant and her baby right behind our chalet. Later, when we were playing Scrabble out in the insaka, one of the camp staff came and asked if we saw what was coming up behind us - more elephants. We moved quickly to our chalet. Finn takes naps on and off during the drives. We saw an amazing sunset last night.

DESPISE NOT THE DAY OF HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
DESPISE NOT THE DAY OF SMALL THINGS
Ants build massive anthills by bringing together small grains of clay together. Trying to imagine how an anthill will be contructed especially at the beginning of the process goes beyond the mind. Amazingly, one grain at a time, one day at a time, through diligent execution, season after season, it starts to make sense.
Because great minds see the end from the beginning, they never dispise the day of small things.
"For who hath despised the day of small things?" (Zechariah 4 vs. 10)
Everything great starts small but it takes the leader to see the mighty lion in the cub or the great boabob tree from the seed. The big organisation of the future lies in the seemingly useless idea in the mind of someone today.
Even if everyone may not believe, never stop believing in the greater realities that lie yonder which are locked in smallness today. The dreaming teenager called Joseph will be a governor one day. Even the pasture boy in David is kingly material.

JAYCINA ALMOND
The model and mom on self care as it relates to her beauty and fashion routines.
“Hey guys! My name is Jaycina Almond (@jaycina) and I currently live in Atlanta. I am a 22 year old model and writer but above all, I am a mom. When I happen to have some spare time I love to read and find new music on the interwebs!
All of my self-care routines have to be quick and easy so I can get them done with minimal crying from my daughter so for me it really starts with my diet! I drink a ton of water and try to avoid dairy at all costs so I can have healthy skin and hair.I have combination skin, I have an oily T-zone and then pretty normal everywhere else so I cannot go without my Clarisonic Mia brush! I wash with Derma E Purifying Gel Cleanser that I get from whole foods - I rinse my face with hot water and put a dab of cleanser on my brush then wash my face until the brush shuts off. Around 2 mins. Second step is astringent/toner, I use Clinique’s Clarifying Lotion for oily skin first then end with Dr. Thayer’s Witch Hazel which can also be found at whole foods. Third step is to moisturize! I usually use plain old grapeseed oil BUT this amazing company named Bahi Cosmetics recently sent me their Sunflower Sweets Serum and I AM IN LOVE. That’s really all there is to my skincare routine - I do the same thing day and night. I try to do a facial steam and do a mask at least one night per week however!
I don’t usually do my makeup everyday but when I feel like looking cute I’ll throw on foundation and mascara and some gloss! I use Make Up for Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Stick as foundation - if I have any spots I want to cover I use the Fenty Beauty Match Stix in Wheat as a concealer first then apply the foundation and use a flat-top kabuki brush I got off amazon to blend it all! Then I swipe on Blinc Mascara and finish with a clear lip gloss you can find at any local beauty supply store! I make sure to set it all with Urban Decay’s All Nighter setting spray! If I’m going out for the night I’ll add Colourpop’s Super Shock Highlighter in Wisp to my cheekbones/brow bones/cupid’s bow/inner eye and then set everything. I like to look really natural when I do my own makeup since I’m always getting my makeup done for work!
Hair for me is super simple - I use a tea tree oil shampoo you can find at target then condition with Shea Moisture’s Boabob and Tea Tree Oil Conditioner. While I still have the conditioner in I will detangle my hair then rinse and that is it! I will usually use a bit of whatever curl defining creme I have on hand then blow dry with a diffuser - I usually just let my hair do its thing then wash about every 4 days but if I just don’t have time to do a wash n go I’ll spray my hair with Carol’s Daughter Curl Refresher Spray and go!
I would say my personal style is a tomboy meets edgy party girl meets bohemian mom. LOL. I really love loose flowing silhouettes and that is what I gravitate towards on daily basis because it’s easy to do oversized layers and be cute and comfy with minimal effort; but I also really love to get dressed up and feel super sexy! I feel like Rihanna is everybody’s fashion inspiration, and if she isn’t then she should be!! On that same note I adore Fucci - I think he got his big break by being noticed by RiRi for styling! AND on that same note I adore Neha! She is another amazing stylist - her and Fucci are friends! Big inspirations right there! When it comes to shopping I have a few like go-to places: ASOS for basics or something quick because I have their two-day shipping thing. Depop for vintage designer and the fye vintage tees. Re/Done for vintage levis - my go to denim. And then Revolve for quality basic pieces. All these are online because I actually hate shopping in store, I get so overwhelmed with all the choices! I need to be able to look at every single item then decide what I want! It’s a problem! I really love Gucci, too. I think they are killing it right now. For me it’s just about putting on something that makes me feel good - if my outfit doesn’t give me a certain feeling then I won’t walk out the house in it. I truly believe it could ruin my day.
The 5 things I own that are significant to me and my personal style are as follows:
“6” necklace - My daughter’s name is Syx so I rarely take it off.
Gold pinky ring - I got this ring while I was still in the first trimester of my pregnancy and I haven’t taken it off since, it is actually a baby ring so the idea is to wear it until Syx is big enough for it.
Chapstick - I feel like this is self-explanatory. Chapstick is a must-have.
A signature scent - I think this is really what I am missing, my grandma has worn the same perfume my whole life and anytime I smell it I am instantly transported back to childhood. I haven’t found the right one yet but once I do it’s over!
Self love - If you don’t love yourself and feel confident without the clothes, the makeup, the jewels, then nothing will mask that. I think it’s very important to master self love before anything else.”

Victoria Falls – simply spectacular!
In planning our trip to South Africa, we knew that we needed to include Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe as part of the adventure. And after arriving here less than 24 hours ago, it has not disappointed us! The dusty ride from the airport through shrubby brush, red dirt paths, curio-hawkers, and baboons goats and cows criss-crossing the road brought us to the small town of Vic Falls and our lovely resort, Shearwaters Explorers Village. I had lined up a few Shearwater expeditions for us ahead of time, so we got started right way with a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River.
Even at low-water season and at the close of the day, the Zambezi River is an awesome sight: slow-running, shallow, peaceful, running along the shores of Zimbabwe and Zambia before it gives way to the falls. Looks peaceful? Maybe unless you encounter a Nile crocodile or a family of hippos who decide you are in their way. The first one will chomp you up, the second simply trample over you. Fortunately, we were in the safety of our pontoon boat for wildlife viewing taking these photos.
Nothing as awe-inspiring as an African sunset….
Off the next morning with our guide Kali and four Danish tourists to experience Victoria Falls – the 'Smoke that Thunders', made famous by explorer David Livingstone in 1885 and in 2008, named as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Straddling Zimbabwe and Zambia, Victoria Falls has long been a bucket list item for world travelers. Ours included!
Known as the highest waterfall in the world at 107 metres, Claude and I can compare Victoria Falls to the other great names in waterfalls. Iguacu in Brazil and Argentina is the widest, and Niagara in Canada boasts the greatest average volume of water – and definitely, the most urban shopping opportunities!!
During our 5 km morning walk along the footpath - alternatively through dry brush and lush rainforest peppered with strangler figs and fireballs - Kali led us to remarkable viewpoints with names like Devil's Cataract, Rainbow Falls, Boiling Pot, Horseshoe Falls, Armchair Falls. Notice how the low water season allows for different colours and flows - no poncho required!
We ended up at the famous Victoria Bridge. This unique engineering project of 1905 allows traffic across Zambezi. Just imagine how impressive it must have been for early travelers watching steam trains cross over the gorge while sipping a frosty G&T on the balcony of the historic Victoria Falls Hotel circa 1904….
One of the highlights so far has been frequent encounters with African wildlife. Soon after visiting a famous local boabob 'The Big Tree', over 23 metres high and over 1000 years old, we met our first series of African animals: warthogs, kudus, baboons, vervet monkeys, impalas and….. elephants! Amazing sight for us just a few days off the plane. A small group of African elephants munching away on grass and short shrubs and so close to the van.
Kali pointed out the details about males vs females, habits and some sad poaching history. He also provided us with some sage advice about keeping ourselves safe when viewing wildlife, including NOT walking around in the wild at night (duh!). Then two female elephants decided to duke it out over a male. So, after some heady drama, we headed down the road with cameras full of great shots and big smiles on our faces!
