Horikoshi giving hero tropes to the villains is probably my favorite part of bnha.

He presented us with a nervous wreck of a boy at the beginning of the manga. Look, he seemed to say, isn't he creepy? isn't he evil? He met Tomura in his most lanky form. Malnourished, neglected, real dead hands all over his body and blunt nails digging mercilessly in his skin.

Sure, the story paints him as a real villain. He is there to kill kids, after all. He wants to kill the light of the hero society, to spread violence and hatred all around. He's also very very suspicious. You get that feeling that there's more to the story. It's in the way he acts, his desperation. He looks sick. What is he making him so? What is his story?

Tomura is a loser. A failure since the beginning, if you follow the narrative. Characters like Stain, Overhaul and Redestro point it out: Tomura isn't the best strategist per se, they can't understand his reasons to do what he does, there's something wrong with him in villain terms.

That's when the brain starts to pick up the signals and plants the doubt. Many people don't notice it, but something in the story gives away that he is a very special type of villain.

We see him alone in his dark messy room, staring at a screen. We see him drinking alone in a bar as he sits on his misery. Over and over, we see that evil boy and his burdened stance. Only Kurogiri is there. His master only talks to him through some radio. He doesn't mention anyone else. No one else seems to live in that bar but Kurogiri and him.

Back then, when Tomura was all about AFO and All Might and no one else, he felt hollow. Rotten.

We first saw him approach someone for help and some company after the first LOV members were introduced. We meet Toga and Dabi, then Tomura goes to find Deku. Is he still creepy? Yes. Is he still evil? Also. We have Giran talking about Tomura with the fondness you reserve for a spoiled child. The way Kurogiri and Giran talk about it, it's more like Tomura needs to make some friends. He's not used to it, so he's being rude to them.

He's a chosen one reluctant to make friends, since he's used to doing things on his own— or at least with people he didn't care about. Next time we see him, his telling Kurogiri that he doesn't want them to die, he wouldn't sacrifice them for a goal and he actually wants them to succeed. He talks like a leader, he considers them important.

When they show us the LOV around Tomura as he talks to a kidnapped Bakugo, there's something in there already. How they worry when Bakugo hits Tomura and knocks the hand out of his face. They humanize Tomura, which is a lot to say when AFO did everything he could to dehumanize him. They make Tomura be more mature, more responsible and more capable. While AFO paints Tomura as a foolish child that cannot get things right until he's guided there, the LOV trusts Tomura to take care of himself and guide them.

That's when the hero tropes with villains started.

A quick list from the top of my head:

Twice overcame his trauma mid-battle in order to save Toga and then the LOV.

Tomura was tempted by Overhaul to betray the LOV in exchange for power. He pretended to agree, only to backstab Overhaul because Tomura would never forgive those who hurt his friends and would never betray the LOV.

Magne went to attack Overhaul for offending her and her friends, defending their ideals and their right to exist 'til death.

Mr. Compress took the leading role in many dangerous situations to assure that the LOV would get their win, but also to assure they'd make it out alive.

Tomura would forgive people not on his behalf, but for the benefit of the LOV.

Giran refused to sell any info about the LOV and laughed in his captors face because he was not so important to them. Turns out he was bluffing about it being all business, since we know from Twice's flashback that he did it also for the fondness he felt towards the LOV and the LOV went there to rescue him.

The LOV rushing through a battlefield the size of a city while desperately trying to find a way to save Tomura.

Twice and Mr. Compress refusing to leave Tomura fighting Gigantomachia alone and taking the burden of his training with him.

Dabi doing all he could to save Twice and snapping when he realized Twice was dead.

Mr. Compress worried about Toga and her solo mission.

Spinner telling Toga that she needs to come back safe and sound to them.

Tomura refusing to die or give up while the LOV still needs him (to be a hero).

Twice already dead and still moving because he needed to save Toga.

The entire LOV refusing to even consider defeat because they blindly believe that there is no way Tomura can lose.

And there's so much more...

The LOV made Tomura act heroic. They gave him a reason to want to save and protect, instead of just wanting to destroy.

The power of friendship but for evil.

I need to be able to be in the car with the bnha boys just gossiping and bitching about people. Like it’s inbetween classes midweek and we’ve gone out to grab some drive through. I’m sitting with French fries in hand and a steady beat is pumping through the radio as we sit it the car. The static hum of the AC mingling with the whizzing of cars on the road. Just fully able to decompress as we playfully tilt our converse clad toes like windshield wipers sipping on the straw of our soda. Katsuki who absolutely eats that kind of shitty friendship smack talk sessons UP. He’s leaning over to turn the radio down as you continue to talk at the red light. Katsuki always immediately jumps in to your defense and gives the best grievances in commentary to your argument. The chances are he doesn’t even know this girl, but he does recall you complaining about this same classmate a few weeks back, and on, and on. He knows she’s not good news. And the man lives for the way he verbally obliterates people in your defense. Something about hearing Katsuki do it in his natural snarl and growl has you punctuating the end of his comment with an exaggerated “thank you!!”

Shoto is buckled in for the ride as your passenger princess. he’s quickly gotten a handle on gossiping without ever having mentioned a name. He’s already shoving a fry into his mouth as you drive off down the road complaining. In the other hand, Shoto is cross-referencing Instagram, Facebook, and the like to match up names and faces himself. Once he finds it to confirm he purposefully tilts his phone under your nose and shows you the worst possible photo as their reference. He lives for the moment where you give an excited little gasp. It’s his sacred duty as the “friend of a friend” to provide a dozen infallible cover stories where together you can gracefully escape any encounters with said individuals. “Of course, love.” He’s already got his notes app pulled up to get started and he’ll crack open the drawer of manilla folders when he gets home. Izuku seems to enjoy hearing you rant on and on as he nods feverishly and passes you nuggets and French fry’s that have been lightly cooled by holding them up against the AC vents. He loves to sit and hear you talk even if you’re upset while doing it. In fact, he usually ends up admiring the strength you have to ignore the other person. Internally, Izuku is hanging onto every word and always trying to figure out the best solution to your dilemma. After your long-winded ranting is complete he’ll shake off the adoring doe eyes and now he’s offering up more than just delicious food - he’s offering up the perfect kind of comeback from the literary analysis he’s been doing this whole time. Every once in a while there’s an option he rattles off that nearly makes you choke until he frantically hands you your drink. It isn’t until you finally drink and sigh, “that’s good.” That he relaxes again and puffs up his chest at the notion of him having helped you.

Babe, you’re a piano playing BNHA fan. Who else could I give you other than our resident DJ and Redacted equivalent to Present Mic, Hudson?

Obvs, those aren’t the ONLY reasons. Type Two’s are motivated by a desire to be loved and understood; Hudson strikes me as an openly loving and affectionate person. You’re an extrovert; he’s an extrovert. You’re British; of the Redacted bois, Hudson strikes me as the most enthusiastic to have a partner with such a fun accent so different from him. There’s lots of reasons of varying sizes and significances, but your love of music and piano is definitely a major factor.

Hudson is a truly fun person to be with, especially for an extroverted partner. He strikes me as the type of guy who has tons of friends, very popular, and his friends easily become yours as well- especially since he talks about you on air so much. (Maybe he calls you Lottie as a radio pseudonym, before he asks whether you want your real name broadcasted!) Eventually he gets you in the studio with him, maybe playing piano backing tracks or honestly just to hang out with him. He loves sharing his partner and your lovely voice with the world.

It’s one of those “late night driving turn up the radio let’s pretend we’re the only two people in the world” songs, but I love the beat in the chorus, so I can also imagine him playing it on air and dedicating it to you. (It’s also funny to me because you figuratively live in a city that you’ll never see in the screen- at least, the empowered part of the city lol)

I have been OBSESSED with a music based BNHA NoQuirks!AU for a couple of years now and I had to share...

Basically I've heard specific songs/artists and go "that's totally *specific characters* vibe" and have built a world around that and how I think each character would find catharsis through music. Drabbles for the "main" cast under the cut

Dabi/Touya Todoroki: Ran away from home as a teenager to upset his parents (his dad), but they didn't care. Specifically, they never reported it because Enji and Rei were caught up in their pending divorce and they figured he would come home eventually. He ends up joining a band (the LOV of COURSE) as their singer. His vibes are based off McCafferty and CORPSE.

Shoto Todoroki: His parents divorce gets REALLY ugly and through a weird chain of events he ends up under Touya's custody. He ADORES his rebellious brother and follows in his footsteps like a shadow (Touya says he hates it, but secretly is happy). He joins Bakugo's band after their original singer leaves. His vibes are Sub Urban and AFI.

Katsuki Bakugo: Same as cannon, his parents signed him up for drumming lessons to get out his excess energy. Started a band with Undercut-kun in middle school, but Bakugo took it WAY more seriously than his friends did. Eventually Undercut and Co walked out, leaving Bakugo to find new members in high school. His vibes are Blessthefall and NP.

Eijiro Kirishima: Wanted to become a musician to inspire people, just like his Idol Crimson Riot inspired him. He can sing, but gets embarrassed by his voice, so he sticks to the bass guitar when at all possible. Is part of Bakugo's band OFC. His vibes are Too Close To Touch and Dance Gavin Dance.

Hitoshi Shinso: Laid back and devil may care attitude. His foster fathers (Aizawa) are a promoter/manager and (Hizashi) a radio DJ. He has been dragged around the industry for years. Learns to play the guitar after meeting Bakugo and joins his band. His vibes are Current Joys.

Izuku Midoriya: In this AU he lives with his father, while his mother is in "America". His dad is pretty uninvolved with Izuku, and he still gets bullied in elementary and middle school. Izuku ends up turning to poetry as an outlet and falling in love with music. He has performance anxiety and selective mutism, so he would rather produce music. But when he does perform it's like the heavens open up. His vibes are Alec Benjamin and Cavetown.

Ochaco Uraraka: She is conflicted in her decision to get into music. She wants to become rich enough to buy her parents a house and take care of them, but she also knows that the music industry is not nice to the 99% that are not uber famous. Her vibes are Billie Eilish and Poppy.

Others in this AU include: Hawks, Jirou, Yamomo, Mina, Sero, Toga, Camie, and Kaminari. I may post another list of drabbles about them.

erasermic everybody breaks -- everybody lives fic where the rooftop gang survives, Aizawa and Shirakumo get married, and Mic decides it's better to let them live happily ever after. Except then they get divorced.

((I'm gonna make a verse page at some point, but I have a few au's for Honey.

ST verse: Honey's a half-betazoid who was forced to live with her human relatives on earth after her father's passing, and didn't get to learn about her heritage until she was much older. She's a traveling confectioner and collects recipes from across the Alpha quadrant. As a child, she loved how sharing sweets could put people into such a good mood, and she loved feeling the joy and camaraderie that it could offer. Baking and cooking is her zen place, and she adores her job. It makes her feel closer to her father.

BNHA verse: Honey's quirk is a powerful type of levitation/telekinesis where she can float objects as well as herself, which she finds very useful and economical. 1LUV, the radio station she works at, has an unspoken rivalry with PYHU Radio, but Honey doesn't care or buy into it. She's here to heal hearts, dammit, not to fight other hosts! ))

((Once again I am thinking of Shy's childhood, especially in her BNHA verse, and why she is how she is.

Her stepdad was not a good person. He is not and never will be a good person, but he did love Shy in his own way. His quirk was manipulating radio waves, and being able to direct and redirect them. He was involved in some shady corporate espionage shit and heard a lot of behind the scenes dirt on police scanners and news broadcasts, about dangerous villains and civilians with out-of-control abilities.

He saw his daughter in those people; frustration mixed with power, anger and ability that are out of control and dangerous. He knew that if she had a meltdown at the wrong time or fought the wrong kid, she'd end up sent to some kind of special school or facility for "bad" kids and he was terrified of that. So...he made her control herself. By controlling her, and limiting her access to people, and ensuring that she wasn't able to hurt anyone by making the very act of touching another person forbidden.

And then...he left one day. The protection he offered and forced on her was gone, and even if she lived like the rules were still in place, the guidance she had was no longer there.

AU of Bakugou has consequences but Izuku never gets OFA and becomes a vigilante

the vigilante thing threw me off for a bit, because i don't do a lot of straight vigilante aus, but then i remembered this one i came up with years ago when i was first getting into bnha:

bakugou does get into ua. actually, he gets ofa. once he graduates it only takes him a year to break into the top ten (not quite hawks' record but not bad either). by his second year as a hero, he's already on track to become the next all might. a lot of experts are saying its only a matter of time.

people have their misgivings about this. he's facing a lot of criticism for collateral damage and attitude problems, especially with younger fans. some reporters who don't make a habit of towing the party line worry about the example he's setting. bakugou doesn't care.

all might has his misgivings as well. he basically picked bakugou to be his successor after he won the sports fest his first year, thinking that his time was running out and he needed to make a choice. he was despondent and had given up on finding the ideal person he truly admired, but the more violent bakugou becomes, the more he feels he made the wrong decision.

izuku didn't immediately take up vigilanteism when he got rejected from ua. mostly he needed an outlet for his frustration with how unfair the world was, so he took up martial arts. when he was in college though, there were a lot of incidents in the area where he lived, and heroes didn't patrol there. he started going out on "leisurely walks" after dark, dealing with any crime he came across, and became some thing of a local legend.

that local legend becomes a not-so-local-legend when izuku accidentally stumbles on a huge trigger manufacturing operation and busts it wide open.

look, it's not his fault the factory blew up. that isn't even what he got famous for. he was just trying to sabotage the equipment while he rescued a bunch of little kids that were getting used as test subjects. it's only because he got caught on camera leading them all out of the burning building, one particularly adorable little girl clutched in his arms, that anyone even knows he was there. the fact that he was silhouetted against an explosion in the background made it look like ten time more badass than it was. he was just trying not to drop her.

obviously, he gets arrested for vigilanteism, but he's been through that song and dance before. vigilanteism is classified as a form of illegal quirk use, and he doesn't have a quirk. ergo, he cannot be a vigilante. the police are still scratching their heads when they have to let him go, but he walks. the gaggle of reporters waiting outside are impressed.

the story spreads like wildfire. izuku becomes an overnight sensation. he gets given a hero name -- the green shadow -- and he has like four different fanclubs inside of a week. there's calls for him to be given a hero license, or at least some kind of award.

he keeps doing vigilante work, obviously. first some underground heroes ask him for help with a case, then a support company gives him a suit (for "cosplay purposes" obviously) and pretty soon he's doing actual patrols and meeting fans on the street. he thought giving a few radio interviews (on present mic's show! he's living the dream!) would make it all die down, but people are hungry for more of him. in just a few months, he's a household name. the calls for him to be legitimized increase.

the hpsc ignore all of that. quirkless people can't be heroes. izuku was probably just in the right place at the right time to be in that picture. they don't need to do anything, or acknowledge him in any way. that would be counterproductive, and send the wrong message to the public.

the public disagree.

the thing about the hero rankings is that not every individual person can rank every individual hero. there's thousands of heroes in japan, so even if approval rating data was gathered via website, it would be impractical for people to select from a list of choices. as such, the forms are write-in. people are given five blank spaces, and told to list the heroes they approve of most.

when approval ratings for the next billboard chart are being collected, the hero with the number one approval rating is the green shadow.

the hpsc are furious, but find that, according to their own rules, they can't actually do anything about it. they have to give him the ranking, even though he's not really a hero. a hero is defined as someone who works within the justice system and uses their natural abilities to stop crime and protect citizens, after all. technically, izuku fits that definition.

this is when bakugou becomes aware of what's been going on. he honestly didn't even register the green shadow as being a thing until he was told he got the second highest approval rating. obviously izuku isn't on the payroll, so he doesn't have a "cases resolved" stat, but being the number one most approved hero in japan is enough to get him to number 10. bakugou is pretty pissed.

he gets even more pissed when he finds out who the green shadow actually is.

bakugou does what he always does when deku gets to much attention: he goes to put the nerd in his place. unfortunately the only time he can find deku reliably is during a patrol, so he has to settle for a very public call out. he's fine with that, and fine with having witnesses while he berates deku for trying to be a hero without a quirk. he's fine being recorded while he picks a fight with deku on a crowded street. he's even fine when the cops who come to break up the fight let deku go after they drag him away. little punk's not worth arresting.

he's less fine when his approval rating takes a last minute nosedive, knocking him out of the number one spot he should have been claiming this chart, and relegating him to sixth place. lower than he's been since his debut.

it kind of goes from there. izuku keeps doing increasingly badass things. his approval rating keeps going up. the underground heroes he works with start listing him as a consultant, so he even starts getting paid and has a record of his resolved cases. over the next three charts his rank keeps climbing. first number ten, then number eight, then number seven, then jumping up to four. after two years walking the fine line between vigilante and hero, he's at number two and knocking on number one.

bakugou, meanwhile, continues to decline. he keeps getting into very public fights with deku, and while he considers himself the "winner" in each fight he notices that deku is focused not so much on him but on keeping people out of the way and minimizing damage to their surroundings. people are praising deku for "handling things so well" and "preventing collateral damage" and they're criticizing bakugou for equally stupid things. his approval rating keeps dropping. his resolved cases are dropping too, as he spends more time fighting with deku and doing public appearances to try and salvage his approval rating. his rank drops lower and lower.

the chart where bakugou drops out of the top ten is the same chart where izuku makes number one.

all might reaches out to izuku, at that point. he says he regrets giving ofa to bakugou, and that if he had the choice he would take it back. he says izuku is much worthier recipient. izuku says he wouldn't take it if he had the chance; he likes being a quirkless hero, even if he had to find a loophole to do it. however, the fact that bakugou has ofa, and is using it so recklessly, is becoming a problem. all might asks what they can do, and izuku says he has a plan.

all might throws his weight around to pressure the hpsc into giving izuku a hero license. honestly, it's kind of absurd that their number one isn't a real pro. they should be ashamed it took them this long. the hpsc cave and plan a huge public ceremony to make izuku officially a hero. maybe once the people are satisfied on that front they'll lose interest.

obviously, bakugou has to crash the ceremony and try to kill deku.

izuku does something pretty sneaky at that point. for the firs time in their professional rivalry, he gives bakugou his undivided attention. he starts talking trash, baiting bakugou, goading him to further anger. finally he drops his ultimate bomb: telling bakugou he's only worth anything because of ofa, and that if he can't win with the quirk he was born with his victory doesn't count. bakugou takes the bait, and hands ofa back over to all might like he's taking off his gloves.

bakugou loses, obviously.

after that, things wrap up pretty nicely. bakugou goes to prison for trying to kill someone, finally. izuku becomes number one, and a proper hero for all the world to see. all might gives ofa to someone who really deserves it, one of the kids izuku rescued from the trigger factory. izuku's first hero friend, eraserhead, introduces him to his student, logical ruse aka hitoshi shinsou, and it's only eighteen months before they're planning a wedding. everyone lives happily ever after.

So, if you asked to write your top 5 fav characters each from JJK & BNHA, what genre will you put them (or you agree that they should be in shounen)....

Ooh! Ooh! This is so unfair because I have a lot of faves from both BNHA & JJK but there are some characters that definitely are staying in number #1 - 3 spots.

The characters in bold are my faves I'm talking about.

Okay, first! Miruko in horror, I want to see my #1 in a horror. She would make such a good Final Girl, I'm sticking to that. She would be an iconic Scream Queen, no arguments. Same for Midoriya. I want him in an horror! (They're both living in a horror right now, but that's besides the point!)

Hm... I want to see Rock Lock and his family in a slice of life comedy. Oh, I would love to see him and Mrs. Takagi having this loving marriage and parenting their baby son. Like, do you know how feel-good of a story that would be? Imagine a scene where Rock Lock is grocery shopping with his son in the cart trying to reach for things and he's just like "buddy, I already got you the fruit snacks".

Burnin needs her ass in a video game and I'm talking something like Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Darkstalkers... something like that! Look at her design! Her powers! Look, if Fortnite keeps putting anime characters in their game (can't believe JUJUTSU KAISEN GOT IN THERE), I need to see Burnin in Mortal Kombat so she can have a kickass fatality. She deserves to cut someone with a fire sword.

Present Mic has to be in a musical. He has to. I know for a fact, he is musically talented! Running his own radio host, maybe owns a record store or he's a songwriter for a lot of popular artist? How about a DJ?! Anything I would be interested!

For JJK...

I need my #1 pink haired, ass-kicking sunshine boy in a comedy. I need him in funny situations, not depressing ones. Same with Sukuna. In fact, a comedy where they're mistaken for each other or twins, but turns out they're not related and Sukuna is way older. Yes, I'm still going on another that AU (I'm shook from the kudos I got for the fic I wrote). Bonus, Itadori has his 9 older brothers and Sukuna is an idol. Choso has to be there.

Miwa, I want her in a magical girl anime where she still swings her sword and and still has to wear her suit, just a different design. Imagine sparkles on that suit! Blue is her signature color. Her love interest is Muta whose own hero alter is Mechamaru. Her talking animal companion is a blue bunny. She has many upgrades! Her canon schoolmates are still her schoolmates here. Takada-chan is a fellow magical girl.

Yuki, hear me out, should be in sports. In fact, she's like JOE in SK8 the Infinity. Better yet, put her in SK8. She and JOE would be besties, for real. If she's gonna be in a sports anime, I would love for her to do skateboarding. Or anime on roller derby! She would kill it in roller derby!

in BNHA, wasn’t there a hero who’s quirk relied on eating? Would they be friends with Mikey too?

I don't know which one you're talking about, but there are several!!

To set the stage, in this AU, Mikey is in the current Class 1A, the one that Izuku, Katsuki, and all the classmates we know right now. Adhering to the age order set by ROTTMNT (that is, being a year older than the last), Leo and Donnie are 2nd years, and Raph is a 3rd year, all being in Class A of that grade level.

There are two students in Class 1A whose quirks are directly supplemented by eating (three if you count Iida, who drinks orange juice to fuel his engines, but I don't) First is Yaoyorozu Momo, who needs to eat a lot, because her creations are produced from her fat. The other is Sato Rikido; his quirk relies on consuming a lot of sugar, which lets him increase his strength. In my opinion, Mikey would try to be friends with everyone in class! But of course, he would gravitate to those he could bond with over food, especially Sato, who loves to bake. (There are also classmates he could also bond with when it comes to cooking, especially when they start living in the dorms together, like Izuku and Tsuyu. Theoretically, also Katsuki, but they're kind of similar in a lot of ways, so I think Mikey and Katsuki would be more inclined to fight for dominion over the kitchen)

Another memorable character whose quirk is related to eating is Amajiki Tamaki! His quirk lets him manifest features of anything he's eaten, so long as they're still in his system. Though he is their senpai, he is in class 3A, which means he's friends/classmates with Raph, so it wouldn't be too weird if Mikey had already met him before.

There are also two pro heroes I can think of when related to food/eating.

One of them is Lunch Rush, who works at UA; he's able to increase strength through eating. It's kind of vague since that just sounds like eating in general but there's probably some greater effect at play. Someone pointed it out in the notes of this post I made that Mikey would probably be a fan of his and yeah, somehow it didn't really occur to me. I think Lunch Rush would be a celebrity chef in the same way that Present Mic is a radio host concurrent to being a pro hero if that makes sense.

Finally, there's Fatgum! His quirk lets him make anything adhere to his body and sink into his fat, and his fat is also able to store kinetic energy. I'm also not sure why Mikey being a fan of Fatgum didn't occur to me (in the post I mentioned above, I said I didn't really have any other ideas for Pro Heros Mikey would be a fan of, because him being a fan of Miruko was just clearest to me) Other than being someone that appreciates food a lot, Fatgum is just a lot of fun!! He's so round and cute and smiley, and he wears orange!

I know you just asked about heroes Mikey would be friends with, but I couldn't help myself with the heroes he might be a fan of too!
