It's funny to me that AFO keeps messing up with those he's held captive, groomed and/or manipulated

Yoichi was held in a vault and eventually got rescued by the 2nd and 3rd user, and of course, because of that, the OFA quirk began stockpiling

Aoyama tricked AFO with help from his friends and even attacked him as the final war arc began

Tomura told him to fuck off TWICE (once in war arc, second in 379) and got out of his control

And now Machia is fighting against him because he abandoned him all those years ago

Kirishima protects Shinso from AFO!

Shinso reveals Machia broke his brainwashing, and Machia’s own anger at AFO’s abandonment is fueling his actions. I enjoy this for the schadenfreude — AFO treats people as disposable tools, and now all those tools are banding together to defeat him. First we had villains turning heroes, now we have AFO’s associates (Nagant, Machia) turning on him. Of course, Shigaraki has also rejected AFO, but he’s currently fighting Izuku rather than working with heroes to defeat AFO.

I don’t have any ethical issues with Shinso brainwashing Machia, but it’s nice to know Machia isn’t totally a Nomu. (FWIW, any time Shinso uses his quirk on someone, he’s removing their autonomy. That what brainwashing IS. That’s why his quirk is potentially villainous. If the argument is that Shinso did something unethical in making Machia fight his “beloved master” because Machia wouldn’t want to take that action, then every use of Shinso’s quirk on a villain is similarly unethical — he’s making them do things they don’t otherwise want to do. And if every use of Shinso’s quirk is unethical, then we’re basically saying he DOES have a villainous quirk. To me, the key to Shinso’s quirk being heroic is knowing the proper time, place, and manner for usage. Just like how All Might took care not to cause excessive violence or collateral damage with his smashes, it’s Shinso’s timing and restraint that marks him as a hero. But I digress.)

Turns out the helicopters had reporters inside. It fits with the theme of “everyone at home around the world watching will create the energy that will change fate,” but it makes for a lull in the action. In Kamino, the reporters’ presence was another obstacle for All Might to work around, not just a conduit for magic wishing energy.

IMO, the coolest part is the reporter recognizing Deku and broadcasting him fighting Shigaraki, giving Deku an international “I AM HERE!” moment when he doesn’t even realize it.

Similarly, I’m glad we get cameo bits from the movie original characters, but I’m not as invested in those characters as I am in our core cast. I get why people are super excited (especially those who loved Heroes Rising), but I’m personally much more of a manga fan than the anime/movies. (And a Vigilantes fan.) I mean, they’re all canon, as far as I’m concerned, but if this is the only nod we get to the movie characters, I can live with that.

AFO needs to either escape or pull off a badass boss move SOON. Shigaraki is right that AFO was always weak enough to be defeated by one man, but this is starting to drag. It takes all these Titan-like powers to cause less damage to AFO than one mighty smash? Is it just because nobody is daring to get close to AFO??

Did you notice in the newest chapter the reporter saying she wants to make up for the damage she caused by questioning endeavor about the abuse scandal when that's literally her job?

You know, I didn't think of that no; but yeah when you put it that way it seems more than a bit off.

Like lady, you did not do any damage; the damage was done by Endeavor. When a hero does something bad, it's not the peoples' job to ignore it to keep the peace; it is their failure to protect that peace by actively damaging it. Acting otherwise is basically saying heroes should just be immune to all criticism or accountability to keep up the "heroes solve everything" illusion; and we all know where that got everyone.

I mean goodness me, I know this series can have trouble with anything even adjacent to "rocking the boat"; but addressing and punishing evil is also supposed to play a major role in the series' core ideas somewhere, and that's pretty incompatible with not causing a bother.
