It’s probably been said a million times over at this point, but this panel is so cool I don’t care.

Twice is so sweet. All he ever wanted was somewhere that would accept him. They say that when you love someone you remember all the little things about them, and here we see Twice acknowledging two of the little things that Giran does. He’s brimming with emotion for not just Giran, but the whole League. I hope we get to see him influence his other teammates sometime soon. It’s about time these guys had someone to let their guards down around.

Really great action and lore this chapter!

It’s the league of clones! Now, Everyone vs Re-Destro might be a bit one-sided, but every time Twice makes a copy, it’s always weaker than the one before. So after the nth copy, these clones may be very fragile.

1) Twice’s pep-talk to the clones... How reassuring XD. Is that how the clones know they’re clones when they’re created? I wonder what it’s like just coming into existence here and being told you’re (not) gonna die.

2) Shigaraki’s words lmao

3) So based on what Compress-clone is saying, since this Twice-clone never ran into Compress on his way here, his version of Compress doesn’t know he can multiply himself! Also while Shiggy-clone is without injury, Compress-clone did not regain his prosthetic arm. 

This proves that:

The clones have their memories up to the point where Twice last met them, and think they’re the original unless told otherwise.

The clones are physically fine without injury (proven by Twice’s unbroken arms and Shigaraki-clone not looking tired like his real self at the end of this chapter)

Any damage not related to the flesh will not be recovered (the prosthetic arm)

I think at this point, Giran is an honorary member of the League of Villains.

Re-Destro’s threat shook up Twice, but Shigaraki reassures him!

Gear 4th + Greed(FMA)’s Ultimate Shield + Dynamax

That black part strengthens or hardens, as we saw in previous pages where he destroys a Twice-clone with one finger. I wonder if it’s made of carbon?

His clothes also stretched to accommodate it, so I’m guessing his clothes are support items made by Detnerat.

Also, he tanked Dabi’s fire. Wow... When’s the last time we saw Dabi’s fire affecting someone? He’s due for a power-up in his fight with Geten.

This pose/paneling is very reminiscent of Shigaraki attacking Overhaul, as well as Overhaul reaching to grab Eri in the Overhaul vs Deku fight.

Anyways, all the clones got demolished except a Twice-clone who reproduced before it disappeared, and Shigaraki (even though I can’t find him in the panel)

What’s with that pose with one arm behind him though? It’s kind of an unnatural pose he’s kept up this entire chapter. Is he trying to prove he can destroy them all with a handicap?

Re-Destro... I appreciate you giving exposition, but that’s not the real Shigaraki. Save yourself the energy so you don’t have to repeat the same monologue twice.

So that’s where the term “Quirk” comes from.

The mother was murdered by people with prejudice, when she just wanted her child to live a life where his power can be seen as just another aspect of him, a “quirk”.

But rather than looking at abilities as normal, the fact that it gained a label meant that it is still viewed as separate from the natural functions of a person.

Instead of:

Person = Person

It’s:

Baseline human + Quirk = Person.

And I think what the mother wanted was the first one.

While he has a point, I believe that in the end the Liberation Army is twisting these words for an way that suits themselves.

Re-Destro talks about oppression, but according to Geten, the new world they build will discriminate against people with weak quirks. Quirks becomes the defining aspect of your success.

He talks about addressing the suppression of quirk usage, and Curious attempts to interview someone she believed to be “suppressed”. But they were shoving their narrative on to Toga, who was this way because of her quirk, and not because of the environment around her. They want to frame “Quirks” as good and the system as “Bad”, but in actuality if the school counseling had allowed Toga free use of her quirk without reprimanding, then she would have killed a lot more people legally.

“She wished for a world where special abilities are just ‘Quirks’ in the truest sense”, but the creation of a literal army based on the single special power(talent) they have, is not what I call making quirks be ‘quirks’, as in, making it a mundane aspect about you.

This series is full of successors, and we see a lot of heroes and villains inherit powers and ideology from the previous generation. What I see from Re-Destro, whose existence isn’t even known to Destro, is that he believes he shares Destro’s ideology, but the way he’s going about things shows that he doesn’t truly understand what liberating quirks truly meant.

What he calls “Freedom” will become another shackle.

9/10 delivery on your ambitions, Re-Destro. It has great support and backstory, and credible reasons. But in the end your goal don’t line up with the belief you preach.

I love how Shigaraki didn’t even give him a reply. He’s ignoring him completely even while hanging upside-down.

And he knows himself too well.

(They’re on the top floor. How the heck is Twice going to make a good enough cushion for Giran)

We never saw Shigaraki use his quirk in such a large-scale way before. It’s awesome!

I’m guessing Re-Destro’s quirk also functions as an armor (Greed's power theory is more possible now)

Interesting how real Shigaraki notes that Re-Destro is from the commercial (apparently the League watches tv regularly), and the clone never said anything.

Chapter 232 reminded me of one of my favorite pieces of bnha world building: the life-like complexities and dual natures of social issues.

According to Redestro, the anti-quirk sentiments that once ran rampant were shoved into a corner by policies that effectively tried to put a band-aid over a gaping head wound. To those who were least affected by anti-quirk discrimination, the problem appeared to be solved, and further discussion was probably silenced with a simple “You’re equal now. Get over it.”

I have no reason to disbelieve Redestro about this. We’ve seen through Spinner that people with certain types of quirks are still at a disadvantage. People like Shinso are automatically feared instead of helped. Laws prevent everyday people from using their quirks in totally natural ways, resulting in Midoriya, Iida, and Todoroki’s near arrest as well as Uraraka being forced into heroics just so that she can use her quirk in a totally harmless but life-changing way.

However, Redestro isn’t seeing the full picture. We can’t forget that this whole story is about a boy whose dreams, future, and safety were all endangered specifically because he wasn’t born with a quirk. Despite his incredible intelligence, he was neglected by his teachers for his classmate that had a strong quirk. Similarly, Endeavor focused all of his attention and time on Shoto while neglecting his other three siblings simply because of how desirable their quirks were.

This kind of double-edged sword is common in anti-discrimination debates of all kinds, and I continue to be blown away by Horikoshi’s ability to realistically portray just how complicated and tangled society can be. I feel like if quirks existed, this is exactly how it would go down.

BnHA Chapter 232: Giant Bitchslap Arm

Previously on BnHA: Gigantomachia woke up and started ninja-running toward Aichi prefecture. Then all of a sudden we cut to Hawks just chilling on an Osaka rooftop with a bag. Everyone was like, “whoa, Hawks, what are you doing in this arc?” Hawks was all “well I’ll show you” and then he had a flashback where he fucking murdered Best Jeanist, probably, and everyone was like “um, hey, what the actual fuck” and Hawks was like “well you asked” and we were all filled with regret for having done so. Back in the Ol’ Villain City, Twice caught up with Tomura and Spinner and they were very happy to see him, and Tomura was like “so anyway we’re almost at Re-Destro’s tower and I can’t wait to fucking kill that guy” and the others agreed but they also worried that Tomura was too exhausted to keep this up much longer, and so Twice went on ahead to try and finish off RD on his own. The chapter ended up with Twice #241762-D arriving at the top of the tower to confront RD and rescue my boyfriend Giran.

Today on BnHA: Twice creates some clones of Tomura and the gang to help him out. Re-Destro then insta-kills one of the clones and tells Twice that he’ll kill Giran if Twice uses his quirk any more. He then makes his arm go all big and he just fuckin’... [gestures wildly] WHIPASH!! and just smacks them all to death, and then he goes over to where Giran is and gets ready to kill him while he and Twice are having a moment. Thankfully the not-quite-dead-yet Tomura clone intervenes, and as he fights him, Re-Destro launches into a big villain monologue about the Mother of Quirks, a.k.a. the mother of the first superpowered child to ever be born. Long story short, that baby grew up to be Destro, and his mom was all “please be kind to him and let him live in peace!” and so they fucking killed her because people are terrible. As RD is wrapping up his story and about to kill the clone Tomura, the real one reaches the tower and is all, “TOUCH!!!” This is the single most badass thing anyone has ever done, and the chapter ends with a wobbly Tomura confusedly interrogating an enraged Re-Destro while “We Will Rock You” by Queen plays in the background omfg.

(All comments are my unspoiled reactions from my initial readthrough of the chapter. I did a quick edit for grammar and clarity immediately afterward, and added one or two ETAs in the process, but aside from that there are no changes.)

here’s how it’s gonna go. I’ve got a mirror, and we’re gonna use it to cautiously peek around corners before clicking to the next page, and from what I understand that should protect us from being instantly killed by Horikoshi’s murderous basilisk glare. the characters, on the other hand, well...

what kind of sound effect is this

glomp glomp? are these Horikoshi sound effects? does he know his little Twice clones are making enthusiastic hugging sounds?? and yet this is oddly in character though

also it looks like he’s cloning at least one Tomura and Dabi! so that should be fun. we get to see RD presumably murder them all on this little test run, and then they’ll hopefully have a better idea of how to approach this on their second go-around

RD says he had a lot of guards down below, and he’s praising Twice’s quirk. well, his “superpower”, anyway

that was the title of this chapter, incidentally; “quirks and superpowers.” I do vaguely wonder why they’re so insistent on using different terminology for it, and I wonder if there’s an actual reason for that

anyway so now Jin is yelling at the clones that they’re clones. so it’s okay if they die and stuff. lol. I’m sure that makes them feel a whole lot better

I wonder if this Tomura is less sleep-deprived? also, Twice duplicated the hands as well! that’s something that was pointed out to me a little while ago, back when they were fighting Gigantomachia. this actually seems a bit iffy to me now that we’ve been reminded that he needs to understand the details of something in and out before he can copy it. like, he couldn’t copy the quirk-be-gone bullets because he didn’t know how they worked. but somehow he knows how these hands work though??

or maybe he doesn’t, and these hands don’t actually work like the Real Deal hands. that’s probably the case actually. so anyways I wonder if this Tomura will act a little different. I’m probably overthinking this to the extreme lol

and Twice and Dabi are making the exact same joke I made three paragraphs earlier about “that should make them feel a whole lot better.” get your own material you assclowns

last but not least, lol at him having to reiterate his tale of bravely overcoming past trauma yet again to Compress because he missed the whole story. poor Compress, all confused and out of the loop. I wonder if Twice duplicated his robot arm. it’s hard to tell in the picture whether it’s missing or he’s still just in the process of creating it

heh. it’s possible Jin has not thought through the potential long-term consequences of this little undertaking at all sob. but that’s a problem for future Twice! right now current Twice has more important things to deal with, like kicking Re-Destro’s ass

yeah, you see, he’s all “don’t worry about that right now” and presumably tucking that whole notion away someplace in the back of his mind to be properly fucked up by later on. as anyone with ADHD can tell you that’s clearly the best way to deal with all of your problems

meanwhile RD has just the one of him, but possesses an unknown quirk, and does not seem to be at all fazed by the current situation which is a bit unnerving. oh yeah, and he does still have a hostage, though, if the others insist on taking their sweet time to go and untie my boy Giran. yeah. so that part’s also not good. dammit Twice untie him already
