Two Terrific IHeart Podcasts: Skinquiries and Car And Driver's Into Cars
iHeart Media has hundreds of podcasts. When your roster of shows is that large, it's inevitable that some of them aren't very good, others attract a weird, albeit extreme, audience, and others are clones of shows on Spotify or Wondery.
Today, however, I'm happy to report that iHeart has struck audio gold with two new podcasts -- one about cars (Americans love cars) and the other about our skin (Americans are obsessed with their skin).
First, iHeartMedia’s Ruby Studio and Car and Driver have debuted the Car and Driver’s Into Cars Podcast For auto enthusiasts. As most of you know, Car and Driver (CD or C/D) is an American automotive enthusiast magazine first published in 1955. In 2006 its total circulation was 1.23 million. It is owned by Hearst Magazines, who purchased it from its prior owner Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S. in 2011. It was founded as Sports Cars Illustrated.
In fact, Car and Driver and Road & Track are sister publications at Hearst and have for many years shared the same advertising, sales, marketing, and circulation departments. However, their editorial operations are distinct and they have separate publishers.
Car and Driver’s Into Cars examines the hottest and most compelling new cars of the year. As the name suggests, this show brings listeners into the cars to hear the engines revving and the tires squealing. After experiencing the cars, the hosts step into the studio to talk to the people who designed and built them. Episode one features the Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato, and upcoming episodes will include the Acura Integra Type S, BMW i5 and 530i, Cadillac Celestiq, Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, and the Toyota Land Cruiser. The show's hosts are Tony Quiroga, Editor-in-Chief of Car and Driver, and Eddie Alterman, Chief Brand and Content Officer of Hearst Autos, who bring to the show the same intelligence, independence and irreverence that has made Car and Driver a trusted source for news and reviews since 1955. The hosts should deliver candid reviews of the most compelling new vehicles on the road. eBay Motors is the exclusive sponsor of Car and Driver’s Into Cars for season one, which, I think, is a clever blending of content and advertising. The first episode of Car and Driver’s Into Cars debuted on June 6, 2024. New episodes post each Thursday. Now, this next iHeart podcast is inspired. Social media and the podcasting platform overflows with stories, ads, testimonials, demonstrations, influencer pushiness, and celebrity endorsements of skin care products.
This podcast, Skinquiries, about the skin, which is the largest organ in the human body proves -- I'm going to say it -- reveals that beauty is more than skin deep. Can we talk about how incredible our skin is? Eleven miles of blood vessels, provide a first line of defense, and a mirror into our health and well-being. Our skin is really our biggest guidepost. It sends us important messages, reflecting our lifestyle, nutrition, and sometimes our thoughts. The marketing pitch is: "So, let’s shine a spotlight on our skin. Let’s go deep into skin health: what it means, what it looks like, and how to have it. Nicole Berrie hosts Skinquiries, a new show brought to you by Ruby Studio from iHeartRadio. With help from people with real life stories, experts, and doctors, let's get to the heart of what makes us glow from the inside out."
I have listened to the first two episodes and they are fascinating. The May 30th episode begins with a predictable -- yet still compelling -- morality tale of how lounging in the sun can make you feel and look great, but without the proper care, you might be unintentionally hurting your skin. Host Nicole Berrie explores the skin’s relationship with the sun. Berrie speaks to skin cancer survivor and patient advocate Jacqueline Smith about the dangers of assuming that any skin is immune from sun damage. And dermatologist and skin cancer doctor Mary Stevenson weighs in on the safest ways to enjoy the great outdoors while protecting ourselves. Take a listen to find out how much sunscreen you should really be using, ways to have fun but stay safe in the sun, and when to stop wondering what's going on with your skin and seek help. Get ready to rethink your approach to sun protection and skincare –it's time to shed light on the truth behind sun-kissed skin.
The second episode, -- June 6th -- veers away from the familiar into the unexpected. Have you tried a cold plunge? While host, Nicole Berrie, prefers the soothing embrace of a steamy sauna to the invigorating rush of a cold plunge, she’s open to the idea of a cold dunk and all of its benefits to your skin. When it comes to cold plunges, those who love it, love it a lot, like Melissa Kegler, who shares her journey to becoming a cold water distance marathon swimmer, including the benefits and dangers that go with it. While dermatologist Dr. Geeta Yadav shares her expertise on what subjecting our skin to extreme temperatures really does and how to reap the benefits of cold plunging without damaging your skin.
Nicole Berrie is a terrific host -- funny, inquisitive, with a flair for narrative drama. Check out Skinquiries.
As conventional wisdom explains: "Be good to your skin. You will wear it every day for the rest of your life."

New-Generation Beauty with Electric Heart And Combustion Versions
In May 2023, BMW introduced the new eighth-generation 5 Series sedan. The car with factory code G60/G61 received several notable changes in design, technology, and equipment, and, for the first time in its history, the model became available in an all-electric i5 version. Fans of the classics should not worry, as the manufacturer has prepared several models with internal combustion engines.
This is the most significant update in the entire 50-year history of the model. Pricing has already been announced: BMW 530i $57,900, BMW 530i xDrive $60,200, BMW 540i xDrive $64,900, BMW i5 eDrive40 $66,800, BMW i5 M60 xDrive $84,100. And the new BMW maintenance costs promise to be still above average. But US dealers won’t have the cars until October. The Indy Auto Man dealership crew shares their insights on the new model.
Technical equipment
The new BMW 5-Series has two electric versions. Base – i5 eDrive40 with one 340 hp electric engine on the rear axle. It accelerates to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. But the i5 M60 xDrive is a 598-horsepower hurricane with acceleration to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. Both electric versions received a traction battery with a capacity of 84.3 kWh. Charging from a 205 kW fast station takes about half an hour.
In addition to electric versions, the new BMW 5 Series will be available with petrol and diesel engines of various power levels, as well as plug-in hybrids. All engines are equipped with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic and a 48-volt starter-alternator. Gas BMW 5-Series are not really gasoline – they are mild hybrids. The base engine (for the BMW 530i and 530i xDrive) is a 2-liter turbocharged engine with 258 hp. In comparison with its predecessor, it added seven horsepower. It takes 5.8-5.9 seconds to accelerate to 60 mph (the all-wheel drive version is a little faster). A step up is the BMW 540i xDrive with a 380-hp 3.0-liter biturbo engine – it accelerates to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.
Major changes
The new BMW 5-Series is more modern and elegant than the 3-Series, and more dynamic and sporty than the 7-Series. Outwardly, it is easy to be more dynamic – the 7-Series turned out to be too monumental. Conventional gasoline and electric BMWs almost do not differ in any way, and for a surcharge, the future owner can get backlighting of the nostrils in both versions.
The new BMW 5 Series Sedan has noticeably gained in size and, most of all, in length. It is now 5060 mm (an increase of 86.4 mm), and the wheelbase has stretched to 2995 mm. The width has increased by 32 mm (up to 1900 mm), and the height – by 36 mm (up to 1515 mm). Externally, the new BMW looks more rigorous and modern thanks to a redesigned radiator grille, narrow headlights, and more expressive body lines.
The interior of the new BMW 5 Series has also undergone significant changes. The dashboard and center console are more curved and driver-focused. BMW was reluctant to update the media system of the previous-gen 5-Series, so the new model took a step forward in this regard. The 14.9-inch screen, part of the latest BMW iDrive 8.5 media system, complements the 12.3-inch screen in front of the driver.
There are also many other impressive options on board. For example, the AirConsole platform allows downloading and playing games right in the car (on stops only), and there is even an Interaction Bar system borrowed from the 7-Series. Finally, there is the Highway Assistant autobahn assistance system (it independently drives along the road at speeds up to 85 mph and realigns itself when the driver looks in one of the side mirrors) and a fully automatic parking system.
The Live Cockpit Plus system runs on BMW OS 8.5 and supports cloud navigation, voice control, and wireless charging for smartphones. In addition, the new 5-Series boasts a vegan interior with Veganza leatherette upholstery, a Sky Lounge glass roof, BMW Interaction Bar lighting, and other options.

This last one is a bit difficult for me to talk about, being a huge Porsche fan. The engineer who helped build the 550 Spyder in the 50’s, Ernst Fuhrmann was in charge and he didn’t want the 911 in the lineup, causing the car to be often over looked when cars like the 914 and 928 were in production. Not to say there is anything wrong with those cars, they’re wonderful in their own right. But the 911 has always been a poster child for Porsche until this time. Also during this time Marilyn Lange was given the last Playmate Pink car given as a gift, a pink Porsche 911S. One of 2079 S’ built from August 1975 to July 1976, with the company offering nothing close to the pink tone till the following year with “Raspberry”. The original pink Porsche hasn’t been discovered, and it doesn’t seem like anyone has any leads as far as a number tag goes. I like to think it’s living somewhere, long restored and tended for like many surviving Porsches from this decade are.
After over 10 years of the pink gifts given to the most beautiful women Playboy has found, the Playmate Pink color was retired for Lillian Muller’s red BMW 530i. And after almost 50 years, a couple have survived, others are rumored, and the rest lost to time, perhaps to be found later on and enjoyed then. They may not be pink until restored due to just the type of attention the ladies got from driving such cars, as exampled from the harassment that Angela endured. Which is a perfectly understandable reason to simply repaint and/or sell the car to someone else with little knowledge how potentially valuable this cars would be today. I know if I’m out and about, and I see a Porsche or a ’69 GT500 at a car show or meet, I’m gonna be looking closely at the seams, to find any trace of the extravagant, bright pink, offered to only one lovely lady who graced the magazines and perhaps many minds across America, and maybe the World.
