The VW’s taller tires cushion bigger bumps a bit better, but road textures read through this older chassis a bit more noticeably than in the new Mazda. That having been said, a few of the same bumps excited some dash trim vibration on the Mazda3 that was absent in the VW. The seats are similarly cosseting, though the Mazda leather feels nicer than the VW’s perforated leatherette.

Naturally, there’s no HUD. One interesting Volkswagen “advancement” is the presence of a USB-C port. Just one. For the whole car. And no old-fashioned USB-A ports into which we all have a million plugs that fit.

This average-height (5-foot-10) body fits behind itself easily in both, but there’s a good fist’s worth of surplus head space overhead in the VW (perhaps in part because its sunroof panel slides back outside the roof, not underneath it as in the Mazda). The big rear side windows and lower, level beltline pay off in way better outward visibility in the VW, but a lower cushion provides less thigh support. RAY MASSEY: Jazz up your summer with Honda’s hit city car
These are challenging times, so what better way to relax than with some Jazz.
I did just that this week at the Berkshire launch of the fourth-generation Honda Jazz compact city car — powered by a nifty hybrid electric-petrol system.
This was the first UK coronavirus-compliant car launch under strict social distancing and safety measures coinciding with showrooms re-opening.

The Crosstar accelerates from rest to 62 mph in 9.9 seconds, has a top speed of 107 mph, but will still manage 58.9 mpg and CO2 emissions of 110g/km
Since launch nearly two decades ago in 2001, more than 406,000 Jazz models have been sold in the UK (including 17,000 last year) out of 7.5million globally.
A rival to the Toyota Yaris, Ford Fiesta and VW Polo, it adopts technology pioneered in the all-electric ‘Honda-e’ and is the first of six new ‘electrified’ Honda models due by 2022.
For the first time, there’s a Crosstar variant with a reduced size SUV-style that is more flexible, funky and practical than the standard version.
Visibility in the new Honda hatchback is much improved, thanks to a wider windscreen and much thinner pillars. Sound-deadening improvements mean it’s also 10 per cent quieter than before.

This is my favourite. It rides higher than the standard Jazz, has integrated roof rails and 16 in silver and black alloy wheels.
Mine came in fetching ‘Surf Blue’. The 109 hp hybrid system combines a 1.5 litre petrol engine with two compact electric motors.

It can run in hybrid drive, pure electric mode and engine drive and can move seamlessly through all. The smart, contemporary interior has pleasant, soft-touch materials and an uncluttered dashboard.
Comfortable front seats dispense with springs in favour of a slat system to reduce fatigue and relieve back pain. There’s also more legroom in the back.
Clever flexible rear ‘magic seats’ fold down to increase load- lugging space fourfold from 298 litres — more than enough for a modest shopping trip — up to an impressive 1,199 litres.
The brake pedal positon has been changed to optimise the foot-angle. To help taller drivers the steering wheel is 2-degrees more upright.
Occupants are protected by 10 airbags – including a new front-centre bag to reduce the impact of front passengers’ heads and bodies colliding. Whiplash-mitigating front headrests are fitted.
A smart-phone app allows owners to keep in touch with their car when away from it – including tracking its movement and location via GPS satellite and giving you an alert if it exceeds a set distance or ‘geo-fence’ while someone else – whether off-spring or a partner – is driving.
It will also alert you if the car’s secutity alarm is activated.
The standard hatchback accelerates from rest to 62 mph in 9.4 seconds up to a top speed of 108 mph, but offers pocketfriendly fuel economy of 62.8 mpg with CO2 emissions of 102g/km.

The fractionally longer, wider, higher Crosstar accelerates from rest to 62 mph in 9.9 seconds, has a top speed of 107 mph, but will still manage 58.9 mpg and CO2 emissions of 110g/km.
Standard prices from £18,995, rise to £20,185 for the SR and £21,385 for the EX variants. The Crosstar, from £22,635, is available only in top EX trim.

Kia Picanto gets a high tech makeover
KIA’S spicy Picanto just got tastier with a series of new upgrades, telematics and safety features added.
To improve cornering and braking, it has a range of electronic stability controls. There should be lower emissions from its re- engineered 1 litre and 1.2 litre engines.
Expect prices from £10,000 with higher-spec models closer to £13,000. Design tweaks are evolutionary, not revolutionary with a more purposeful look and sharper lines.
Customers have a choice of ten vibrant paint finishes and a range of customised interiors including one in lime green.
It goes on sale in the UK and Europe this autumn with the Korean car firm’s seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty as standard.
Car sales crashed by 89 per cent in May to their lowest since 1952 with just 20,247 sold compared to 183,725 a year ago, according to latest figures.

Lego has finally followed up its amazing Porsche 911 GT3 Technic kit with a kit that's arguably more amazing, and certainly has more pieces. It's the 2018 Bugatti Chiron, and the 1/8 scale kit features 3,599 pieces, which is nearly 1,000 more than the 911. Those pieces make up an impressively detailed model just on looks alone. The blocky LED lights up front, the wide light bar at the rear and the trademark horseshoe design elements all translate surprisingly well to the Lego format. The interior has detailed seats and instruments, and there's even some Chiron luggage that fits under the trunk where there exists a unique serial number. But the really impressive stuff is under the plastic skin. Moving piston engines aren't new to Technic, but it is cool to see that Lego managed to create a tiny version of the W16 engine. You can clearly see each bank of narrow angle V8s and watch all the pistons dance. The engine is even hooked up to a real 8-speed sequential transmission. The transmission can be shifted via paddles in the driver's side footwell. The rear wing moves up and down, too, and is lowered for high-speed mode with a key you build out of Lego pieces. You'll want to make sure you have plenty of space on your table top for the finished product, since it's nearly two feet long. And budget plenty of time for assembling those thousands of pieces. But once you're finished, you'll have your own Bugatti Chiron with many of the same functioning features for so much less money. On that topic, the Chiron kit will cost $349.99, which isn't entirely cheap, but it is coming with a lot of parts and functionality. It's available through Lego stores both physical and online right now, and hits other stores on August 1. Hyundai Brings Genesis to Europe
Hyundai’s Genesis brand plans to start selling vehicles in the UK, Germany, and Switzerland by early 2020. The small-scale venture will initially be restricted to one boutique outlet per country, in London, Munich, and Zurich.
Sales will be done exclusively online via direct marketing, so there will be no dealers as such, only highly efficient service operations tucked away in the suburbs. Although outright vehicle purchase is an option, Genesis brand chief Manfred Fitzgerald, who joined the company from Lamborghini, expects the bulk of the business to be lease deals. “We can do multi-vehicle arrangements with a sedan in summer and a SUV in winter. We also provide free loan cars, collect-and-deliver maintenance, and a variety of tailor-made user models.”
As with Maybach’s long defunct personal liaison manager scheme, building a one-on-one customer relationship is pivotal. Also on the cards are regular over-the-air updates, tailormade IT packages, and global assistance such as customized rentals and access to EVs in restricted areas.
Speaking of EVs, Genesis plans to offer three emission-free models, starting in late 2020 with a small-to midsize crossover. Next, in 2021, will be a mid-range sedan, followed by a four-door GT in 2022. In the long run, Genesis wants to use a single, modular convergence vehicle architecture that would enable vehicles with combustion engines, plus plug-in hybrid and pure EV powertrains, providing total flexibility in terms of technology and capacity.
In terms of conventional powertrains, the six-model Genesis range will be based on three different platforms: G70 and GV70, which are aimed at BMW 3-Series and X3; G80 and GV80 (aimed at 5-Series and X5); and G90 and GV90 (aimed at 7-Series and X7). All six models are to be in place by 2019, apart from the G90, which won’t be renewed before 2021.
After catching a glimpse of GV80 at the New York Auto Show, we recently had an opportunity to drive the G70 that was developed with a little help from Albert Biermann, formerly BMW’s M division R&D chief. Available in RWD and AWD drive form, the new saloon is pretty, roomy, comfortable, and safe. Handling felt compromised a little by the all-season tires, and sport mode is essential for advanced driving pleasure.
Three different engines are earmarked for the G70 in Europe: a 204-hp 2.2-liter diesel, a 250-hp 2.0-liter gasoline turbo-four, and a 370-hp 3.3-liter V-6. The latter model is a bargain M3. It goes like stink, smokes like the Marlboro Man when pushed hard with all the stability controls switched off, and its plain-Jane livery should make it virtually invisible to the Highway Patrol.

Hyundai’s Genesis brand plans to start selling vehicles in the UK, Germany, and Switzerland by early 2020. The small-scale venture will initially be restricted to one boutique outlet per country, in London, Munich, and Zurich.
Sales will be done exclusively online via direct marketing, so there will be no dealers as such, only highly efficient service operations tucked away in the suburbs. Although outright vehicle purchase is an option, Genesis brand chief Manfred Fitzgerald, who joined the company from Lamborghini, expects the bulk of the business to be lease deals. “We can do multi-vehicle arrangements with a sedan in summer and a SUV in winter. We also provide free loan cars, collect-and-deliver maintenance, and a variety of tailor-made user models.”
As with Maybach’s long defunct personal liaison manager scheme, building a one-on-one customer relationship is pivotal. Also on the cards are regular over-the-air updates, tailormade IT packages, and global assistance such as customized rentals and access to EVs in restricted areas.
Speaking of EVs, Genesis plans to offer three emission-free models, starting in late 2020 with a small-to midsize crossover. Next, in 2021, will be a mid-range sedan, followed by a four-door GT in 2022. In the long run, Genesis wants to use a single, modular convergence vehicle architecture that would enable vehicles with combustion engines, plus plug-in hybrid and pure EV powertrains, providing total flexibility in terms of technology and capacity.
In terms of conventional powertrains, the six-model Genesis range will be based on three different platforms: G70 and GV70, which are aimed at BMW 3-Series and X3; G80 and GV80 (aimed at 5-Series and X5); and G90 and GV90 (aimed at 7-Series and X7). All six models are to be in place by 2019, apart from the G90, which won’t be renewed before 2021.
After catching a glimpse of GV80 at the New York Auto Show, we recently had an opportunity to drive the G70 that was developed with a little help from Albert Biermann, formerly BMW’s M division R&D chief. Available in RWD and AWD drive form, the new saloon is pretty, roomy, comfortable, and safe. Handling felt compromised a little by the all-season tires, and sport mode is essential for advanced driving pleasure.
Three different engines are earmarked for the G70 in Europe: a 204-hp 2.2-liter diesel, a 250-hp 2.0-liter gasoline turbo-four, and a 370-hp 3.3-liter V-6. The latter model is a bargain M3. It goes like stink, smokes like the Marlboro Man when pushed hard with all the stability controls switched off, and its plain-Jane livery should make it virtually invisible to the Highway Patrol.
