Scared Shitless (2024)
When I first saw the trailer I was blown away the use of the word shit in the title and just how manic the trailer itself was. I thought wow this is gonna be a relentless gross out nasty movie. I also said" hey that one actor looks like a fake Mark McKinney". Well tonight I saw the film at the Blood in the Snow film festival and discovered many things. It actually was Kids in the Hall alumni Mark McKinney as a mad scientist and reason for the chaos in the movie. The film was extremely Canadian (Infact made very close to my home) right down to the use of music by Trooper and Loverboy. Special fx by local legend Steve Kostanski of Manborg, The Void, Franky Freako fame. It has a very nice dog in the movie which is always a plus. Also while being made of gross gags and horror blood and guts it's not just one shit and blood gag after the other. It's not as hardcore as many movies I have seen. The grossness is actually surprisingly subtle especially for a movie with that title. This is not a bad thing though, the gags and gross outs are there but shouldn't be upsetting anyone as deep down this movie is a father and son bonding adventure over a monster hidden in an apartment building. Maybe the oddest parts are the mixed mashed characters in this apartment building, including an older couple having some kinky fetish fun. When the film was over and some of the cast came out for the Q and A I was so happy to see the older actors come and to enjoy some pride in their acting in such a wacky movie, cause they were great. If anything maybe some dialogue is too convenient to keep the plot going but it is funny and everyone's likeable. Maybe the one characters germ phobia fills up plot time and feels like it's to make up for the lack of actually gross out elements. This makes the movie more accessable and I'm sure I'm the only one pining for more fecal matter. For a movie with shit in the title there is plenty of poo references, blood, slime, a vivid severed penis and one puke scene but I don't think there's any actual shit. When the lead legit pukes at one point in the movie I was so happy and applauded as I thought yes this is what this movie needs more of. With all the underground horror I'm involved with and review I find maybe I'm desensitized and actually cheer and root for the shit and puke..what the fuck is wrong with me? That being said, it's loads of fun. It's a Toronto centric Shaun of the Dead style horror comedy I'm proud to be neighbors with.

OK, this was pretty fucking great, man 😅 Dumb as shit but tons of fun. It somehow managed to win me over despite not having any super hotties, nudity, or gore. Although I had my doubts to start, the dialog was just funny enough to keep me primed for the ensuing absurdity. This could have been a lot better with edgier characters (I dont think there was a single swear word in the whole movie), blood and guts/practical effects, and more sex appeal, but it definitely delivers enough ridiculousness by the end to make it all worthwhile. Good imes. 7/10 with bonus points for the concept. (Currently only available to purchase both digitally and physically; it's not streaming anywhere for free.)

FROM DUSK TILL DAWN- 1996 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Gecko Brothers, Seth (George Clooney) and Richie (Quentin Tarantino) are on the run from the police after robbing a bank and going on a killing spree. They need to get across the border to Mexico to meet Carlos who will get them safe passage into "El Rey" for a cut of their loot.
They take the Fuller family hostage and use them to get across the border safely. They go to The Titty Twister bar for bikers and truckers to wait for Carlos, unaware the bar is run by bloodthirsty vampires....
One of my favourite movies.
I remember the first time i watched this. Was late on sunday night and had school the next day. Was lying in bed looking for something to doze off to and chose this. Was so blown away by the opening scene i took my covers downstairs to watch the rest on the big tv. As soon as it was finished i rewinded the tape and watched the whole thing again. It was then my favourite movie for the next few years.
Tumblr media
A lot of people hate the vampire twist that comes completely out of nowhere but i love it. Love how its set up as a typical Tarantino style crime movie but then the switch flips and its suddenly a Rodriguez style bmovie.
Love the characters. Seth Gecko is my favourite Clooney role handsdown, he's too cool and very quotable. Tarantino's best acting role imo, he's naturally creepy so this role suits him well. Harvey Keitel is always the man.
Tumblr media
Juliette Lewis plays Kate Fuller, another stand out character. She's very likable and has a few funny moments but really evolves into a badass that can hold her own by the end of the movie.
Always great to see Danny Trejo.
Sex Machine and Frost are both amazing. Played by cult movie legends Tom Savini and Fred Williamson respectively. I always enjoy Frosts chilling monologue about vietnam.
My favourite scene of the movie is Santanico Pandemonium's dance. Salma Hayek is incredible in this. The song "After Dark" by Tito and Tarantula fits perfectly. "Dark Night" by the Blasters is another sweet song from the film.
Tumblr media
Love the atmosphere of the bar, its the perfect setting for the second half of the movie. Really enjoy the final shot of the camera zooming out and revealing the pyramid type design of the back and all the old cars, like its been there forever. They used a painting for that. It really adds the mystique of the titty twister and is a cool way to end the film.
Tumblr media
The vampires in this film are quite different than in most movies. I like this version of them, it works well for an action based vampire film.
Body Count: 122.
From Dusk Till dawn was written by Quentin Tarantino, Robert Kurtzman and directed by Robert Rodriguez.

HARBINGER DOWN (2015)
Tumblr media
Get your harpoons ready for HARBINGER DOWN (2015)! ☠️
What's it all about?
Genre: Sci-fi Horror (think John Carpenter and tentacles!)
Runtime: 1 hour 22 minutes, short and sweet, no time to get seasick
Made in the USA 🇺🇸
The Plot:
A research team studying whales in the Bering Sea stumbles upon a frozen Soviet spaceship (talk about unexpected field research!)
Turns out, it's not empty. Oh no, it's full of a gooey, shape-shifting alien monster with a serious case of the munchies
Chaos ensues as the crew of the fishing boat "Harbinger" try to survive - think claustrophobic cabins, exploding fish guts, and enough body horror to make you hug your pillow
Memorable Scene:
The transformation scene! This practical effects monster goes from creepy blob to full-on tentacled nightmare in glorious detail. Prepare to squirm (and maybe applaud the amazing puppeteers)
Acting:
Lance Henriksen steals the show as the grumpy, seasoned captain. He's seen it all, even space goo, and his dry wit cuts through the tension like a harpoon through ice ⚓️
The rest of the cast holds their own, with believable panic and camaraderie in the face of an unknown threat
Cinematography:
The icy Bering Sea setting is bleak and beautiful, adding to the sense of isolation and vulnerability. You can practically feel the freezing wind whipping through your hair
The claustrophobic shots inside the boat build the tension, making you feel like you're trapped right there with the crew
Overall Reception:
Critics were divided, some praising the practical effects and creature design, while others found the plot predictable and the pacing slow.
But hey, what do they know? This is a movie for fans of classic sci-fi horror who appreciate a good monster and a healthy dose of gore.
Personal Rating :
Harbinger Down is a decent monster movie with its share of thrills and chills. The excellent practical effects, Camille and Henriksen's strong performance, and the atmospheric setting make it worth a watch for die-hard sci-fi horror fans. However, the mediocre supporting cast, obvious budget limitations, and predictable plot hold it back from greatness. It's a fun B-movie ride with some genuinely creepy moments, but ultimately, it's an average film that's easily forgotten once the credits roll.
Bonus Trivia:
Not many people know this, but HARBINGER DOWN was actually funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign! Talk about taking matters into your own slimy hands
So, if you're looking for a chilling sci-fi adventure with gooey monsters, witty one-liners, and enough tentacles to fill a Kraken's dream, dive into HARBINGER DOWN! Just remember, never trust a frozen spaceship...
Don't forget to reblog and tell me what you think! Did the monster give you nightmares? Did you side with the captain? Let's chat!

I was a little disappointed by this one, particularly because Tigger wasnt in it lol. Terrible writing/dialog; I knew immediately it was written by the director... The girls were somewhat attractive in the right light, there was a touch of nudity, and the kills were mostly pretty fun. I almost gave up on this one early, but I ain't mad I stuck it out till the end. I did kind of like it by then, but I really dont see any reason to ever revisit this one. It was a one-and-done for me. 5/10 on Peacock
