The Adventure Zone: Balance/Complete/Chapters: 1   Words: 1,545
Barry has always loved small spaces, but this time he might have taken that a bit too far.
(aka the one where Taako explains to Lup that Barry has gotten himself sucked up into an umbrella because it's small in there and he's into that)
//
Oh, Barry. Sweet Barry.

taz balance one-shot recs!
I've been meaning to make this post for a while now, so here we are! The majority of these are from the past three years or so, because I love a fandom classic as much as anyone, but I particularly want to shine a light on some gems from after the peak of traffic in the fandom tags! There are of course also exceptions that are older, though.
Also, April 19th-21st are Just Leave a Comment Fest, so please show these authors some love!! They're all so deserving!
a recipe for home by @journalofimprobablethings: Taako tries to cook for the first time since Glamour Springs. When things go awry, Lucretia is there to lend a hand.
Gen (Taako & Lucretia), 3.5k. Early B.O.B. era hurt/comfort centered around cooking, with a delicious dollop of sentimentality and dramatic irony on top.
Seven Times Magnus Burnsides Gave Someone A Hug + One Time He Received One by @barry-j-blupjeans: Magnus wasn't really any good at— at words. He was more of an action man. Or, y'know, a "I'll take this hit so you don't have to" man. Talking to someone about their feelings was all kinds of weird, so usually he just left the space for someone else to talk. And, well... Magnus wasn't good at words. But there's a few different ways to get his support across.
Mostly gen with some Magnulia, 8.6k. You've all heard of the classic 5 Plus 1, but obviously Magnus deserves a 7 Plus 1! I don't know how to describe it without spoilers other than being full of incredibly sweet, gentle takes on so many fraught or bittersweet moments. Super underrated, do give it a read.
Embrace the Dark by @ceilingfan5: Bookstore coworkers Kravitz and Taako get more than they bargained for when Taako tries to use his powers to fix Kravitz's migraine. But it's okay--it's an excuse for them to spend time together until one of them can nut up and ask the other out.
Taakitz, 8.9k. Modern with Superpowers AU! Super sweet interactions between Kravitz and Taako, paired with lots of fun background worldbuilding. And, of course, a very special grilled cheese sandwich.
Break This Heavy Chain by Punka_Writes: In the immediate aftermath of Story and Song, Barry Bluejeans could really use a hug.
Blupjeans and misc. platonic interactions, 2.3k. The absolute epitome of comfort food in written form, with excellent Barry characterization (and of course, he does get that hug)!
birds of a feather steal sweaters together by @holdmecloser-gandydancer: When you're a big, burly guy it seems that your clothes just become free reign for all your friends. Normally Magnus is a reasonable guy, but everyone has their limits.
Gen (IPRE crew), 1.9k. Starblaster era fluff! Everyone is written absolutely delightfully, and every time I read it I snort out loud at least twice.
Security by @ceilingfan5: Barry has finally made it--his incredible scientific discovery has landed him a huge fortune...and a lot of problems. The only good thing that's come of it, honestly, has been his bodyguard, Lup. (And the science. That's good also.) He's just gotta stay normal about how nice it is to have someone like Lup around, and also not perish by way of press circuit, and everything will be fine.
Blupjeans, 6k. Modern with magic AU from Barry's POV, featuring equal parts anxiety and pining. Also, it's straight-up extremely funny.
Lonesome Dreams by @jerreeeeeee: Taako wakes up one morning from a nightmare, fast fading. There was a guy in glasses, and they were… somewhere high up? Something terrible happened, but he doesn’t remember. He wakes up in a wagon he’s never seen before, but it has his name on it. There’s tons of food inside, more than he’d be able to afford. And he’s alone. Thinking back to the last thing he remembers is difficult. College? No, he’d graduated. Top of his class, obviously, he remembers that. But what- what happened after? Where is Lup?
Gen (Taako & Lup), 10.2k. Everything starts out the same, except Taako remembers Lup, even if not how she went missing, and it's incredibly underrated and full of phenomenal characterization. I won't spoil how things shake out, but it's a great emotional ride and I genuinely reread it all the time.
it's my party and I'll mope if I want to by @holdmecloser-gandydancer: Taako's birthday is just another Thursday. A detective and an old friend have a different idea.
Gen (Taako & Lucretia & Angus), 2.1k. Short and so sweet! Fics about voidfished!Taako's birthday never get old, and this is one of my absolute favorites. Nailing the angst-to-wholesome ratio.
Tedious Familiarity by @barry-j-blupjeans: Déjà vu. Noun. A feeling of having already experienced the present situation. A tedious familiarity. Barry Bluejeans woke up in a cave, fresh out of a pod filled with green goop, and saddled with an unsettling feeling that he had been here before. If you had asked forty-year-old Barry if he would follow instructions left by a talking coin, he probably would have asked you what type of drugs you were on. But, y’know, fifty… two? Fifty-one? How old was he? Fifty-two sounded right. But, y’know, fifty-two years old Barry didn’t really have that many other places to turn, so this couldn't be all that bad.
Gen, 4.1k. Missing scenes based off Barry's decade alone, written in such an effective style, where all the little details truly make it. Mandatory reading for fellow Barry angst enjoyers.
Angus McDonald and the Wonderland Escape Rooms by coppersunshine: When Angus gets grounded from detecting, to keep his skills sharp he becomes a patron of the Wonderland Escape rooms, run by Edward and Lydia, who quickly decide he's their new nemesis. To their surprise, Angus and the collection of weird adults he's accompanied by decide otherwise.
Gen (Angus & Edward & Lydia), 7k. Modern with magic AU, putting Edward and Lydia in the absolute funniest possible job, at which a little boy detective torments... and maybe, even gives them a chance to turn over a new leaf. I am of the opinion that Angus and the Wonderland twins have a criminally underexplored dynamic, and this fic gave me everything I wanted.
If the Sun and Moon Should Doubt by Punka_Writes: Merle Highchurch, on the brink of a bad decision.
Gen, 1.6k. Merle character study immediately before running out on his marriage. Truly the incredible characterization that Merle deserves; this was a fic that really ignited my love for him.
Greensleeves by @sgrumby: Kravitz has never seen a lich like this before, and he's seen a lot of liches. Merle is just trying to save the universe, thanks very much.
Gen (Kravitz & Merle), 2.2k. A unique and also absolutely genius Lich!Merle AU where Kravitz inevitably comes after him, and Merle is... well, the Peacemaker, of course!

For a variety of reasons, the only word processor I had access to in 2017-2018 was a Nintendo 3DS. I wrote a lot of TAZ fanfic during this time. Now it's been unearthed, ready for your enjoyment! Focuses primarily on Blupjeans, but there's also some gen content mixed in. We've got canon-compliant fluff and canon-compliant angst. We've also got a whole smorgasbord of AU's! Theater AU, cult AU, neighbors AU, and a weirdly elaborate Phineas & Ferb AU.

Come Get Your 2022 Fic Recommendations!!! :D
...about a week late alskhgldskghdlgkhdglhk
This got really long, so I’m going to put it under a read more, but there are categories for fics for fluff/warm feelings, angst, character study, funny/crack, and misc! I guarantee you’re going to find at least one fic that you’re really going to enjoy!! :D
And I hope your upcoming year is uneventful and wonderful!!
So what are you in the mood for? Is it some fluff and warm feelings? Because, this just in, these are the best reads for just that purpose!!
Blupjeans Week 2022 (series) by Noodyl (also @noodyl-blasstal)
This series was made as a part of the blupjeans week 2022 edition, and it follows a story line of Lup getting a job at a lab, working with Barry, and the shenanigans they get up to as the years pass in trying to flirt and send non-communicative signals to each other that they are in love with the other while absolutely positively refusing to actually just talk things out until the very end lol It’s got mutual pining. It’s got hilarity. It’s got scenes that will make you emotional. It’s got getting into situations where they are so close yet so very far. And most importantly, it’s got poor long suffering Taako. What more could you possibly ask for?
Say it with Flours by Grabbingatpowerandkissingit (also @holdmecloser-gandydancer)
Taako and Lup run a catering business best known for their wedding cakes because they make the best wedding cakes in Neverwinter. Which obviously means that when Barry proposes to Lup, and the two of them plan their wedding, Lup wants Taako to make her wedding cake which Taako obviously agrees to do it for her! Except, she wants fresh flowers on the cake and cannot make up her mind what kind of flowers she wants to save her life.
Kravitz runs the floral shop down the street. A convenient place, one might think, to get flowers from every other day while Taako makes test cakes to show Lup how each of the flowers would look >:3
And yep! You guessed it! The cutest, sweetest slow burn to ever exist <3
And the best part? Angus is Taako’s son, and the two of them are so cute together, and Kravitz loves them both to bits and pieces <3
Honestly the best work I’ve read by Reese since The Only One on Your AM Radio which is saying something because everything she writes is PHENOMENAL
Live Like This by Grabbingatpowerandkissingit
A Tuck Everlasting blupjeans AU!!! (Without it being weird lol) Barry meets the most incredible and unforgettable person at the fair when he is 18, during the last summer he spends in his hometown before he goes off to college. And she gives him some life advice and promises to meet him again at this very same fair, but after a few years of trying, he doesn’t see her again.
Until one day he moves back to town in his late thirties and tries one more time at the behest of Magnus and Julia’s son, Angus, and he meets her again at last, and strangely, she doesn’t look a day older than the day he met her.
It’s an incredibly sweet and soft story, and it includes the family and friends he has in Foster’s Gap, both when he was young and then when he’s older and the little kids he knew grew up to be older as well. 10/10 would recommend
Laa Tinvaal by Noodyl
Barry visits an island for a work conference, but his trip coincides with the island’s national celebrations for Tynwald Day, so he decides to partake in some of the festivities! Including getting involved in a ceilidh even though he doesn’t know how to dance. But that’s okay! Because he meets the most beautiful elf he’s ever seen, and between her helping him ease his anxieties as he dances with her and the band giving step by step instructions on how to do each dance, he ends up having a lot of fun!
My personal favorite part about this was learning more about a bit of a different culture’s celebrations, especially through the lens of someone also learning about it for the first time, and the fact that the dancing comes with instructions and a practice round <3 That’s how every dance should go in my personal opinion as someone with the same anxieties about dancing as Barry lol And this is written in such a fun and energetic way; it’s easy to get lost in it and live in it vicariously, and it makes me ache in the best way possible to be able to join in too!
If you aren’t feeling like feel good stories are going to do it for you right now, that’s okay! Because I have a few recommendations for stories that will cause you pain! :D
Both of these stories are by Grabbingatpowerandkissingit!
Rites of Regulation
This story is a look into Killian’s life as she fills her role as a Regulator, and what it’s like when she and her friends lose each of the people from the Bureau who have died during the Balance campaign.
The warring between her fear of growing close to anyone who she may have to one day kill versus wanting to get closer to Carey plus the unofficial mourning party that forms for the people who never got their Rites of Remembrance. The ending leaves you with a sort of ache that makes you smile through your heartbreak :’)
The Trial of Lucretia
After Story and Song, Lucretia knows she has a lot of making up to do for her family, especially if she wants to get on speaking terms with them before Carey and Killian’s wedding. This story starts off with the easiest people to make up with, but it gets harder and harder to reach the people she really fucked over. It’s painful to read, but really realistic and cathartic in the end. Reese does a great job stabbing you in the heart and then slowly twisting that dagger as she continues pushing it deeper and deeper into your chest, and the ending is well worth it <3
If you’re looking for something a little more specific like some character study fics, boy do I have the ones right for you!!
Parlay, as a Gamble by anistarrose (also @anistarrose)
Merle is having a bit of a conundrum. See, he knows he shouldn’t trust the Red Robe. That’s what everyone tells him. But he can’t help feeling like he should at least give him a chance, especially after he saved his kids. If only he could have a chance to talk to him. If only he could find him and bring him somewhere private where they wouldn’t be interrupted or have to worry about anyone finding out what they were doing. If only he could, say, bring the Red Robe into an extra-dimensional space to parlay with the “enemy.”
Oops! He figured out how to pull someone into a special secret place to have a conversation, but instead of the Red Robe, he accidentally pulled in someone else. Oh well! Looks like he’s just going to have to have a nice conversation with long dead Barry Bluejeans instead :)
Leaving, as an Injustice by anistarrose
A character study of Merle and Mavis through the eyes of the latter and in terms of fatherhood. This gives you an emotional walk through of the experiences Mavis has and the things she learns about fathers and the ways in which they may leave, for better or worse, and the injustice of it all.
Sometimes they leave because they were protecting you, which didn’t make sense to her just yet. Sometimes they leave for more unjustifiable reasons. And sometimes they come back to try and make it up to you.
But not all exists are created equal, and even when Merle tries to come back, there’s a real chance he’ll have to leave again anyway to protect them too.
And Mavis finally understands what that means.
Made me cry reading it :’)
Tedious Familiarity by IntrovertedHappiness (also @barry-j-blupjeans)
A character study of Barry and his ordeal of spending the decade away from his family waking up in a pod full of green goo with no memories, finding instructions he left for himself, living, dying, and repeating over and over again. It’s about the hopeful futile effort. It’s about the hopeless determination. It’s about doing everything in his power to help his family and find the person he loves most.
And it’s about waking up in a pod of goo for the millionth time and not knowing that the living mannequin and his two pals staring at his naked body marks the end of a decade’s long effort
Are you looking instead for some great laughs? Because I have a great list of general funny fics and crack fics coming right up!
Night of the Living Costume Contest by Grabbingatpowerandkissingit
The much anticipated sequel to Reese’s Halloween fic titled Halloween Wars from last year! This time the whimsy of this year’s costume choices are a bit more... pointed lol
Just because messing with Taako is the funniest thing in the world, and if Lup and Taako aren’t going to match this year, then she’s just going to have to find someone else (or multiple other people) to match with instead :3c
Barry’s Midnight Snack by SunSwirls (also @institute-of-planar-shitposts)
This was actually based on one of my posts I made months ago about a similar experience I had with my roommate that Sunny adapted because it fit Taako and Barry perfectly lmao Because we all know Barry commits food crimes, and even though I still maintain he didn’t this time, (nor I lol), that doesn’t stop Taako from having his fun and immediately reporting to Lup what he’s done!
(And thank you again so much for writing this, Sunny, you’re amazing aslgkhdlgksdhglkgh)
Drunk Creeps by SunSwirls
Lup gives a guy who was making her uncomfortable Magnus’ number, and the ensuing call is every bit as funny as you could imagine!
IPRE Crew in ACNH, What Will the Do? by Idkanamee (also @idkanameatall)
What it says on the tin :) The IPRE Crew touch down in a plane where it’s just Animal Crossing New Horizons, and to get the Light from Tom Nook, they have to catch bugs and fish and all of the other things you do in that game to sell and collect bells, so they can pay him for the Light. It’s a research heavy year for some who cannot wrap their heads around the physics of this plane and a relaxing year for others who give up on trying to make it make sense. Also, Tom Nook has a gun <3 I cried laughing while reading this lmao
The Dog Days Are Over by glow-worm
The Starblaster crew touch down on a plane that is full of sentient dogs!! There are so many dog puns and dog jokes, and it’s very silly and a fun read! There’s even a dire explanation as to why there are no dogs allowed on the moon!
And most importantly, there were no dogs harmed in the writing of that fic!
Bigfoot is Real and He Tried to (Invest in Bitcoin) by mehnema (swedish-furniture)
I literally almost pissed myself because I was laughing so hard at this the first time around, and every time I reread it, I cry laughing again.
Aubrey and Jake Coolice are known to be very loud when they talk and not very careful about what they shout across the lodge and when. This, understandably, makes Barclay very stressed. So when Aubrey shouts something about how Barclay is “literally a cryptid” just as Agent Stern walks into the room, she and Jake have to come up with a very convincing lie as to what she actually said, and the fact that neither of them are cool headed while under pressure to lie makes Barclay want to perish on the spot.
Especially when he doesn’t even know what cryptocurrency or bitcoin mining is.
Uplifting by OriginalUsername
Okay, so, this is a crack fic that takes itself seriously, and I will warn you, this is nowhere near finished. It’s mostly just set up, and it hasn’t been updated in years, and I fear never will, but I’m putting this on the list because it is so good and so well written and so well worth the read.
...I should also warn you that, this is a crack ship and it’s... Kravitz x Upsy Your Lifting Friend
Yes, the living elevator
No, it’s not got a humansona in this fic, Kravitz literally has a growing crush on the sentient elevator
I originally was going to read this as a joke because I noticed Kravitz/Upsy was a tag and actually had a work attached to it, and I had morbid curiosity, but then the world building and characterization was really good and well thought out, and it was really funny and emotional, and I was so wrapped up in it that I forgot how ridiculous it was that this was about a man who falls in love with an elevator lol
The premise is that Lucas built a futuristic mall run mostly by robots, but it still has a few places run by mostly humans, namely Barnes and Nobel where Kravitz and Barry work, and the Starbucks upstairs where Lup and Taako work. One day the regular elevator between the two places stops working, so Barry dares Kravitz to use the little known employee elevator purposefully hidden in the employee lounge, and that’s how he first meets Upsy, the sentient elevator that got hidden away and forgotten, until Kravitz decides that Upsy deserves better.
And now! If you still haven’t found what you’re looking for, I have three more recommendations that I didn’t know how to categorize, but are equally as good as the rest of the list!! :D
Keep Your Friends Close (and the Lich Who Gives You Cryptic Advice Closer) by IntrovertedHappiness
An AU where Magnus seeks out the Red Robe to ask him questions after his conversation with the Voidfish. He and the Red Robe talk parlay style, a.k.a. through asking one question before letting the other person ask a question and both parties answering truthfully. The Red Robe does answer most of his questions the best that he can and genuinely tries to help him and seems to care about him and his friends which seems weird and a little off putting until he remembers, oh! That’s not weird at all because that’s just Barry and oh shit oh shit oh shit!
It’s really well written and holds a special place in my heart :)
Someone I Have Loved, But Never Known by anistarrose
An AU where Lup doesn’t leave, and both she and Barry join the Bureau.
Before that though, they were separated, but Lucretia forgot to take their wedding rings, so they remember they must have been married, but they don’t remember to whom. So Lup puts out an ad to find her missing husband that she doesn’t remember, and Barry calls to tell her he’s not her guy, but he’s in the same boat. They become fast friends as they and Taako travel to try and find answers before their job at the Bureau, and you know it’s God tier blupjeans pining and poor long suffering Taako 2.0 because how could they possibly do anything about the fact that they are in love with each other, if the other even is really in love with them, when they have these spouses who are probably looking for them too and may not have any memory of them either!
As more information about themselves comes to light, can they even decide to go against their loyalty toward their unknown partners if they don’t know the full truth yet, despite their worst fears of what kind of people their partners could be?
And why is Lucretia so particularly distressed about their situation? Seems weird for their boss to have a vested interest.
And last but certainly not least!:
The Misadventure Zone by SunSwirls
A Balance AU where instead of Taako, Merle, and Magnus are the main characters going around and blowing up towns and joining the Bureau as Reclaimers, it’s Lup, Barry, and Davenport! And no! Lup and Barry are not together, but Barry is sure having a hard time struggling with his feelings toward Lup when he’s supposed to be looking for his missing wife!
Also, Davenport speaks, but it’s hard on his vocal cords, so he signs a lot! :D
Don’t know what’s happened to Taako yet, but Lup misses him, and all we know about Davenport’s backstory so far is that he’s lost his crew, but it’s really fun to read, and I’m excited to know what’s going to happen next!

My Top Posts in 2022:
#5
5 and Davenport and Magnus for the fluff prompts? :3
5. "How many cats did you bring home?"
"Magnus."
The human freezes, having just passed Davenport. The gnome is sitting at a table with a cup of coffee, not bothering to look up from his current report.
"Uh. Yes, Captain?"
"What do you have in your coat."
"My hands," Magnus says.
"What else."
"Uh... My keys?"
Davenport raises an eyebrow, pausing in what he's writing. He likes to keep the crew thinking he's a lot stricter than he actually is; based on the muffled meowing obviously coming from the human, Magnus has stumbled upon some cats. Bleeding heart; though Davenport isn't one to talk.
"I - you can't get mad at me," Magnus pleads.
Davenport sets down his coffee, finally looking at Magnus as he hides a smile. "How many cats did you bring home?"
"Just two," Magnus says immediately.
"Only two?"
"...and their little families," he admits.
Davenport holds his stern expression for a moment before he can't keep it up, dissolving into laughter. "Mag-Magnus, we can't - we can't keep that many cats on board," he manages.
"But Captain!" Magnus gives him the biggest puppy eyes he can muster, but Davenport shakes his head, still laughing.
"No, sorry Maggie. I'm sure they're adorable, but I don't think Taako could make enough food to properly feed them."
"He won't have to! I'll do it myself," Magnus says eagerly.
"You've burnt pasta, Magnus," Davenport chuckles. "Listen, we can't keep all of them. You'll have to take them back to their homes. Don't even think of keeping just one."
Magnus perks up at the wink that accompanies the gnome's words. "Hell yeah!"
"Don't make me regret it," Davenport adds, still smiling as he returns to his coffee and reports. Magnus dashes to his room, presumably to decide which cat he's going to keep around.
Taako doesn't need to know yet.

Listen, alright - listen. Barry isn't usually up in the middle of the night, and especially not in the Starblaster's kitchen. But tonight he couldn't sleep and he's hungry. So sue him, he wanted to make a sandwich! It's not his fault he couldn't really decide what kind of sandwich. He was able to narrow it down to at least two, he should get a gold star for that. That said, Barry can't choose between the two, so he's here in the kitchen making two sandwiches. And that's perfectly fine and normal.
Except Taako walks in as he's spreading the Nutella on the second sandwich, and Barry freezes. So does Taako, who looks at him, then his sandwiches, then back at him.
"Barold."
"Taako?" He can already feel himself turning red, but tries to keep cool about it.
Taako presses his hands together, inhaling and slowly exhaling. "Barold. Please, for the love of god, tell me you are not making a fucking chicken-Nutella sandwich. Like, I know you have shit taste but that's a crime, Barold, and I will have to call the food police."
"No! God, no, Jesus that sounds awful," Barry blurts. "They're separate sandwiches, I swear!"
"That's - somehow that's worse!" Taako cracks, breaking into guffaws. "What the hell, Barry!"
"I - I couldn't decide!" he says defensively.
"So you made both? Like a lunatic?" Taako cackles.
"Listen, I just - I'm - I'm hungry, okay," Barry says. "Please don't tell Lup?"
"Oh I'm absolutely telling Lup, homie," Taako laughs, holding his side and already halfway to the door.
Barry sighs, putting his face in his hands as he hears Taako dash to Lup's room. There's no way the crew is gonna let him live this down.

OK now that I'm remembering again, my current theory:
Cambria made the sallow. Reasons I believe this:
The music is the exact same. Could be a coincidence but I doubt it. Griffin knows what he's doing
Balister Hermine said they were certain the sallow was made, specifically to change them. If I'm right, Cambria thinks that the sallow is the best way to save all of them.
The current with the bodies. I mean, come on - that with the fact there are so many twins and triplets etc. etc. etc? Reeks of experimentation! I'm 100% betting Cambria uses the community that's there to test the sallow.
In conclusion,
I don't fucking trust Cambria

My #1 post of 2022
Magnus nearly crashes into the doorframe in his haste to catch Lup before his stone stops buzzing, holding it in the air with a grin as he makes eye contact with her. She grins back and gestures quickly for him to answer, which he does.
"Hello?"
"Oh, uh... I think I have the wrong number?" Lup hears a voice say. "I was uh. I was looking for Lup, but I guess -"
"He- hey!" Magnus interrupts, trying to sound angry and not like he's holding back laughter. "That's not funny, dude."
"It wasn't supposed to be? I'm sorry, man, I probably just put in a number wrong."
"It's not funny, dude, Lup died fifteen years ago today," Magnus insists. Lup has to use both of her hands to muffle her cackling as the line goes awkwardly silent.
"Uh - I'm sorry?" the guy finally stutters.
"You should be! I have half a mind to find out who you are and come show you t-"
"No! No, no need for that!" the guy says hurriedly. "I - uh, I'm sorry for your loss and I'mgonnagonowbye."
The line drops and Lup bursts into guffaws, followed quickly by Magnus. She holds up a hand for a high five and says, "Holy shit that's the best thing I've ever heard. Gods, I love you, Mags," she giggles.
"You're welcome," he grins. "That was fucking hilarious, deffo keep giving freaks my number."
"After that, you fucking bet."

Throughout the Years
Summary: Lup and Barry fall in love over the stolen century. Friends with benefits to lovers (fuck me up fam)
Word Count: 2225
Warnings: mentions of sex
Year 13 - Barry
Barry felt terrible. The Light of Creation had fallen, but they had no idea where. They were stuck on this hostile planet. Every day clouds loomed over them and hailed sharp shards of ice. He needed to get away from the ship as soon as he could.
There was a break in the weather, and he took the opportunity to be alone for a bit. He said that he was going to study the plant life and ran out. Once he was about a mile out, he sat down on the ground, put his head in his hands and started crying. Everything felt so hopeless.
Barry felt a hand on his shoulder, and Lup dropped on the ground next to him.
“Goodness darling, what’s going on?”
Barry rubbed his eyes and looked at her. “Why did you follow me?”
Lup smiled softly at him. “Do you think that you’re the only one feeling cramped on that ship?” Barry looked away.
“I came here to be alone.”
Lup put her hand on his forearm. “I can be alone with you, then.”
A few more tears came out of Barry’s eyes, and Lup wiped them away.
“But as long as I’m here, you can tell me what’s going on.”
He dragged his sleeve across his face, wiping his nose.
“I just feel hopeless. I hate this planet, and we’re stuck here for six more months. We can’t even do anything to save it. We’ve been doing this for thirteen years now, and I just don’t see the point. Nothing can stop the Hunger. I miss home, but I know I’ll never come back.”
Lup put her head on his shoulder and looked at the field in front of them. When it wasn’t hailing, this planet was surprisingly beautiful.
“We don’t know what happens in the Hunger. We don’t know that our planet is gone. And yes, we haven’t figured out how to stop the Hunger yet. But it’s the apocalypse. It’s going to take us more than thirteen years to figure out how to stop it. And I can’t think of a better team to figure it out, especially with our science expert.”
Barry smiled, and Lup continued.
“You know, I never had much of a home. Taako and I were passed from family member to family member as kids. I miss some things about our planet, but to be honest, the ship with everyone feels like more of a home than anything I ever had. If I had to be with any six people, I’m glad it was you guys.”
He met her eyes, and in that moment, his heart stopped. He fell in love with Lup, right there, right then. She was so positive, even when everything was terrible. She was so kind, stopping when she saw him crying to help him. She was so funny, always making the crew laugh, even in the most dire situations. She was perfect in every way. She had said exactly what he needed to hear. Lup blinked, and continued looking at him. Barry mustered his courage to ask her a question.
“Lup, will you stay with me tonight?”
She broke the eye contact and looked at the sky. “Let me just - ” and she waved her hand, forming a bubble over them, protecting them from any incoming hail. She lay on the ground, and Barry lay beside her. She held his hand, and they stayed like that, talking until it was so late that they couldn’t keep their eyes open.
Year 16 - Lup
Lup was horny. She didn’t mind hooking up with the people she met on each new plane she was on, but she was on a lifeless plane this year.
On top of that, she was bored. The group managed to find the Light of Creation, but in retrieving it, there was an accident, and she was the only one who returned to The Star Blaster. She wasn’t completely alone - it had been Barry’s turn to watch the ship, so she still had some company. She saw the solution to her problem.
She went to the main deck, where Barry was sitting at the table, reading a book he had found in the previous plane.
“Hey there, nerd boy!”
Barry started, taken by surprise. He chuckled once he saw her.
“What’s up, Lup? Can I get you anything?”
Lup sat next to him.
“Actually Barry, darling, I was thinking I could get you something. A promotion.” He looked at her, confused.
“What do you mean, Lup? Are you planning a coup for next year?” She laughed.
“Oh no, Barry. That’s not what I mean at all. What if I promoted you from ‘nerd boy’ to ‘lover boy?’ What would you think of that?”
Barry blushed. “I - I really don’t think that’s necessary, Lup. I mean, I am the science expert onboard, I don’t mind, it kind of - ”
Lup cut him off. “Barry. This would be more than a titular change.” She put her hand on his thigh. “What would you say to taking off these marvelous denim pants and coming into mine?” She winked at him, and started bringing her hand closer to his crotch. Barry stood up suddenly, bright red.
“Lup - I - I didn’t know that you felt that way - I’ve wanted to tell you for - ”
She cut him off again.
“Oh no, Barry, please don’t misunderstand me. I’m here for a fun time, as friends.”
He looked at her, confused.
“Have you - with the others?”
She laughed.
“Usually I’m too busy to think about it. And as long as we’re on a planet with other people, I have no problem. It’s pretty perfect that it’s just us two here though, I wouldn’t want anyone else. Merle is obviously much too gross. Davenport would somehow find a way to report himself to HR, and though I have definitely considered her, I have come to the conclusion that Lucretia would act similarly. Taako is my brother, and Magnus is too much like a brother. The only one left is you, and here you are.” She smiled at him cheekily, and continued.
“There’s also very little to do here. No life to study on this desert planet, we’ve found the Light of Creation. What would you say to having a good time, just you and me?”
Barry started stuttering. “Do you - do you really want to do that, with me?”
Lup smiled fondly at him. “Oh, I didn’t mean to make you sound like a last resort, Barry. Those jeans are gorgeous, and I’ve thought of taking them off of you countless times.”
Barry stood still for a moment. Then he walked back to Lup, lifted her from her seat and started kissing her.
She pulled back. “Barold, I’m glad you’re as good a kisser as you are. Otherwise this year would be very awkward.” She threw her arms around his neck and continued kissing him.
Year 16 - Barry
Barry was in heaven and hell. The past eleven months had been simultaneously wonderful and terrible. He and Lup spent their days together, talking and laughing on the ship. They spent their nights together, fucking and cuddling. He had one more week to be alone with the woman he loved, one more week to be tortured because she didn’t love him the way he loved her. He had been close to telling her that he loved her so many times, but he always lost the courage. Everything was so good - he didn’t want to mess it all up. And she seemed pretty clear in that she thought of him as strictly a friend.
The sex was amazing. Barry had slept with people before, but no one compared to Lup. Everything was so intense. And holding her afterwards filled him with joy like nothing else ever had. He hoped that she would think his heart beating fast because of the sex, but it was because he was holding her, and he loved her so much. He wished that this torture could last forever. He didn’t want this year to end.
Year 17 - Lup
Barry and Lup had gone out to help some robots in town. They wanted to build trust in this community, and this seemed to be the best way. Lup had just finished fixing up a robot whose arm kept falling off. As she sent him on his way, with a fully functional arm, she saw Barry get shocked by the robot he was fixing. The robot cackled rambunctiously, and Lup joined in. She walked closer to the pair.
“What’s going on, Barold?”
“Not much, Lup. Just - ” Barry paused and his muscles tensed up. The robot laughed again, and Lup couldn’t resist chuckling. Barry smiled when he saw her laughing, and he continued working on the robot, despite the frequent shocks. While Lup laughed at Barry, she realized something. He kept working to help others, even when he got hurt. He did it with a smile. She put her hand over her mouth as she continued giggling. She loved Barry Bluejeans.
That night, it felt different. Lup was in bed, and Barry pulled back the sheets to join her. She smiled at him and crawled on top of him. Usually, their sex was fast and hard, and they had to restrain themselves from screaming. Tonight, everything was tender. They lingered over parts that they usually didn’t linger over. Their kisses, previously short and messy, were long and soft. Instead of grabbing each other, pushing and pulling to get into different positions, they caressed one another carefully.
When they came, it felt different. It was just as intense as other nights, but Lup felt complete. She was making love with the most wonderful man in existence.
She had no idea how to tell him.
Year 20 - Barry
Barry was sitting on the sand, watching his friends splash around in the water. Magnus was pushing huge waves of water at Lup, and she was retaliating with spells that hit him harder than any physical push of water could. Taako was surfing, and Merle, Davenport, and Lucretia were casually swimming along in the water.
Lup was laughing as she deftly maneuvered out of Magnus’ attempt to try and grab her to push her underwater.
“Back in a minute, Maggie.” She swam to the shore, grabbed a towel, and sat down next to Barry.
“Why are you looking so glum, Barold? Why don’t you come join us?”
Barry laughed nervously. He didn’t want to tell Lup the embarrassing truth - that he couldn’t swim. He forced a smile, doing his best to appear genuine.
“I’m perfectly fine out here on the sand. Don’t worry about me, go back to Magnus.”
Lup could obviously see through his lie, but she could tell he didn’t want to be pressed. She stood up and tousled his hair.
“As you wish, lover boy. I’ll see you later tonight.” And with a wink, she ran back into the water, rejoining the rest of the group.
Barry sighed. She was utterly perfect. Things had been different the past few years. One night on the robot planet, Lup started acting differently. It confused Barry to no end. Before that night, Lup would go back to her room after they finished having sex. She said it was because he snored, but he suspected that it was because she was just there for sex. They cuddled the year that they were alone on the barren planet, but that was probably because they were the only ones there, and being together at all times made them feel less desperately isolated. That night on the robot planet was just like a night on the barren planet. After they finished, she curled up next to him and placed his arm around herself. He was able to watch her go to sleep every night. He didn’t know why she changed, and he didn’t dare ask her. He was just grateful he could spend his nights holding her.
He looked over at her in the water and sighed. He stood up and started walking back to the ship. He needed to learn how to swim.
Year 30 - Lup
The concert had been a success. Lup looked over at Barry as the crowd cheered and applauded. He met her eyes and smiled. She couldn’t take the silence any more. She loved him. She had loved him for thirteen years, and she still hadn’t said anything. Their relationship had evolved over time. She knew he loved her back when he looked back at her, and squeezed her hand in between bows. She needed to tell him, right now.
“Barry, do you wanna go talk somewhere for a while?”
He looked back at her and smiled.
“Yeah.”
They ran off, not caring whether or not their duet was broadcast to the world. Only one thing mattered in that moment. They finally found a private room. Barry grabbed Lup’s face and kissed her.
“Lup, that was incredible. I - I can’t even begin to say - ”
She cut him off.
“Barry Bluejeans, I love you.”
He paused, then he picked her up and kissed her again.
“Lup, I love you so much. Fuck, I love you so, so much.”
She smiled. Suddenly, the upcoming years didn’t seem so scary. She had the love of her life with her, for eternity.

Here's the scene: You're in a marketplace. Perhaps you came to run some errands. Perhaps you came to man your own shop. Perhaps you came to take a simple walk, do some window shopping and see some familiar faces. Either way, you find yourself sitting down on a bench. On the other side of this bench is an instrument shop having an end-of-season sale. The owner, an old man smoking a pipe, sits crosslegged in front of his shop, eyeing the wares he has on display. He does this for good reason; he's put out many an instrument outside his shop. There are drums, clarinets, flutes and cellos all in pristine condition. The biggest instrument, a large black grand piano sits proudly in the middle of this display, the sign "TRY ME!" hanging off an edge. Perhaps you see a instrument you can play. Perhaps you move closer, feeling the storekeepers eyes burn into you as you pick one up, play a little tune. Perhaps you stay in your seat, content to watch others come up and try their hand-a little girl, banging the drums loudly with childish glee until her parents come to stop her. An old woman, picking up the cello and playing a song you've heard before but can't put a name to. A teenage boy, looking around furtively before picking up a flute and playing a haunting melody that brings tears to your eyes. (He doesn't buy the flute, disappearing into the crowd as fast as he appeared. You look at the store keeper and see him also staring into the crowd, a sense of loss in his demeanor.) And then there's the couple. You do not know that they're a couple at first. They break from the crowd together, something you'd assumed to have been coincidence. The human man is wearing a pale blue button down shirt with blue jeans and a brown belt. His hair is beginning to thin, small spots of head showing from beneath his curly brown locks. The woman is elven and rocking it, fishnet tights paired with a velvet mini skirt and a pink tank top to match. Her hair is up in a ponytail and it brushes the man's shoulder as they both go for different objects-the elf picks up a violin and strokes it, running her hands across the rosewood body. The human turns to the piano. Yes, you do not know that they're a couple at first, because how could two people so different possibly ever come together? You are dead wrong. (And also a bit stereotypical. It's 2018, get with the program.) The elf moves over to the human, violin and bow in one hand and the other moving toward his shoulder. "Play off?" He looks at her with a puzzled smile, placing one of his own hands over her own. "We haven't played in a long time," he says, and she just smiles wider. "We'll start slow," she assures him, a chaste kiss on his forehead. "First person to mess up loses." He rolls his shoulders back and cracks his fingers. "Well then," he says, a wolfish grin breaking over his face. "I'd better get started winning, then." When they start to play, they do not attract much attention. The melody is slow and lazy, both musicians playing the same song. It reverberates through the space, and from the corner of your eye you see the shopkeeper uncross his legs and lean towards the music. The song repeats again and again, a faster tempo each time. The elf is clearly leading the song, the piano always picking up a few notes after the violin. It's a race as much as it's a melody and soon they haven't only attracted attention. They've attracted a crowd. Shoppers stop in their tracks to watch the duo battle. There are whispers amongst the crowd, mutterings of a story and song. You may have heard the story and song. You may have not. But either way you do not take your eyes off them. They play with fervor, glancing every so often at each other with grins on their faces. The elf isn't still as she plays, moving in circles around the piano and calling out taunts with vicious glee. Her lover is not as expressive, focusing on the piano keys with determination. They play, they play and they play and- The woman hits a wrong note. She stops playing immediately but he does not, speeding up the tempo even as she takes the violin from her chin and the crowd starts to clap. It's only after he finishes the song by himself that he looks up at her wearing the most shit-eating grin you have ever seen in your short, long life. "I win," he says, and the crowd erupts into applause as he stands to take an exaggerated bow. She comes to his side as well, whispering something in his ear that makes him smile and blowing kisses to the masses. The crowd starts to part, then, and  perhaps you stay seated. Perhaps you begin to leave as well, standing up and stretching, ready to get on with your life. You do not get far enough to miss this. The man slides back onto the piano bench, setting his fingers on certain keys. The woman looks at him quizzically, unsure of her husband's actions (they are married, you know; their wedding rings catch the light when they turn and twist.). She does not put down her own instrument, waiting to see what would happen next. And then he starts to play. This melody is rough in some places, a few notes grating with the tempo and tune that he sets. It's a simple song, so different from the show of skill they'd just put up. It's...weird, and yet at the same time remarkably charming, and you find yourself leaning towards the music, as if it was a story you wanted to hear more of. And then the violin. It's when the elf joins in that the music starts to make sense. She smooths out the edges, perfecting the melody. The song deepens, becoming more and more intricate as their melodies seem to weave around each other, a delicate symbiosis of song that people once again turn toward. Time slows down around the couple, the people around them slowing their pace in an effort to hear them play longer. And then she stops playing. The piano continues, first with confidence and then with a stutter. The tune starts to collapse, the right keys being missed and the wrong ones being struck as the man fights to keep it together. There is a sort of fear on his face, you see, but not the the kind you would expect from a lover being left behind. He isn't afraid of losing her. He's afraid of never finding her again. The song he plays is horribly beautiful, and you find yourself holding your breath, glancing at the elven woman to see if-no, when she would join back in. And then she does. The song rights itself immediately, violin and piano both rising to a crescendo that screams of joy and relief before collapsing back into their refrain, love in every measure, longing in every note. They play, they play, and then they stop playing, the last notes from the piano ringing clearly through the market. She puts down the violin and he takes his hands off the keys. They look up and stare at each other, silent and wide-eyed, as if meeting for the first time. The shopkeeper starts to clap. A few passerby join in as well, and perhaps you do as well but you're not sure if they can even hear the applause around them, so caught up in each other's gaze that the world might as well have fallen away. She breaks the spell first, walking over and kissing him hard on the lips. He's startled but he kisses back, a smile growing on both of their faces until they pull apart, foreheads still touching. He whispers something and she laughs, whispering something back that makes him draw her closer for another kiss. They stay like this for a second, hands and lips clasped together for dear life until- "Excuse me," the shopkeeper's gruff voice breaks them both out of their shared trance and they turn to stare at him. "Are you going to buy those two instruments?" He says, pointing at the piano and violin. The couple look at each other for a second before the human sighs, digging out his wallet. You leave as the bargaining begins.

oh shit prompts uhhhhhhhh. gosh these are so uncharacteristic of me but??? 27 with taakitz or 23 with blup?? OR SHIT OR if you want angst 57 with the twins but thats too many prompts so just. pick one i guess
I went with the blup option because I haven’t written enough of them lately.
23. “What’s cookin’ good lookin’?”
Lup wakes up to the smell of fresh coffee and something cooking in the kitchen that makes her mouth water, which is pretty much the only good way to wake up, as far as she’s concerned.
She stretches languidly and takes her time getting out of bed. She picks a shirt up off the floor at random - Barry’s, from yesterday, and she doesn’t remember throwing it in this direction, but it doesn’t matter because it’s hers now. It’s loose on her and reaches down to her thighs, and most importantly, it smells like Barry. She smiles and makes her way downstairs.
Barry’s standing in front of the stove, spatula in hand and fully dressed like the responsible boy he is. Lup strolls up behind him and throws both arms over his shoulders, peeking around his head to get a look at the frying pan.
“What’s cookin’ good lookin’?” she says, pressing a light kiss to his cheek.
Barry chuckles and cranes his head back to give her a real kiss. “You’re not the one holding the spatula,” he teases.
“You’re so right, Bear. Guess that makes you the most good lookin’, huh?”
It’s gratifying to know that she can still make Barry blush, even after so many years.
“To answer your question: breakfast,” he says, returning his attention to the pan. Lup rolls her eyes.
“No kidding.” She takes a closer look and frowns at the unfamiliar foods. “What’s all this?”
Barry blushes even harder, which cranks Lup’s interest up to eleven in an instant.
“I suppose it doesn’t look quite right yet,” he says, flipping the contents of the pan over to reveal a golden brown crust layered with bits of caramelized fruit. The fruits are almost unnatural in color, just a touch too red, too blue, too orange, and that’s what clues her in. She does know what this is.
“That’s… from Legato,” she says, leaning heavily against Barry’s back in her surprise. He doesn’t budge, just supports her effortlessly. “From that dining hall where we…”
“Yeah.” She can tell just from the tone of Barry’s voice that he’s smiling. “From the morning after our performance for the voidfish.”
Lup remembers it, of course - she remembers every second of that night with startling clarity because it was one of the things she clung to while she was trapped in the Umbrastaff, fighting to retain her sanity.
They hadn’t slept at all. They’d walked around the conservatory until their feet hurt, just talking, and then laid out on the grassy hill behind the music building to watch the stars. Not that they got much stargazing done. Half a century spent dancing around that moment, and they hadn’t wasted a second of it. Lup’s smiling now, too, at the memory of Barry’s arms around her, of his shaking hands, of his infuriating politeness when he’d asked if he could kiss her and she’d told him to get on with it already.
Before they’d even realized how much time had passed, the sun was rising and Barry was blinking sleep out of his eyes. She’d laughed and said they should get some sleep, and then laughed some more when he visibly perked up and insisted he wasn’t tired. She couldn’t blame him, though; she’d been reluctant to leave herself.
They compromised with breakfast and then bed, and they were first ones in the dining hall that morning, much to the surprise of the cooks who were just starting to prepare for the day. Barry’s suit had grass stains on it and Lup’s hair was a mess, but the cooks just smirked at them when they asked for “whatever’s easy.”
And one of them had brought out this. A special treat, she’d said, for the happy couple, because of course, she heard the song too. Everybody did.
Barry, blushing just like he is now, had thanked her, and they’d giggled over bites of sugared fruit and berries at just how obvious they must have been, and how much teasing they were going to get from the rest of the crew when they finally got back to the Starblaster.
“How did you…” Lup starts to ask, her voice soft with both affection and shock. “The belts?”
Barry nods and switches the burner off, moving the pan off to the side to cool. “I’m not sure its exactly the same, I couldn’t find all the right fruits--”
“Babe.” Lup waits until Barry turns to look at her, already a little sheepish. Oh, he so knows what he did. “Did you use one of the planar belts to jump to the site of our first real date so you could get the ingredients from our first real meal together just so you could make me breakfast?”
“That’s… not entirely correct.” At Lup’s raised eyebrow, he adds, “I used two of the belts. Because I took Kravitz with me.”
“Oh my god.”
“He wanted to see the conservatory! Almost couldn’t get him to come back, he was obsessed with the music building. We’ll probably have to take him again sometime--”
“Hey, Barry?”
He stops talking immediately, but his lips twitch upwards at the corner and there’s mischief in his eyes. Totally unrepentant. What a nerd.
Lup takes his face in her hands and pulls him into a kiss, and he wraps his arms around her immediately, holding her close, like something precious. She’s often been easily overwhelmed by things since escaping from the Umbrastaff, has had to step away from feelings that were too much. But this is too much in the most pleasant kind of way, in the kind of way that Barry has always been a blinding, bright, warm presence in her life. It’s the kind of feeling that she doesn’t mind losing herself in, just for a little while.
When they part, she says, “You’re completely ridiculous, you know that, right?”
Barry just shrugs. “I love you,” he says matter-of-factly, as if there’s no other explanation necessary.
And really, there isn’t. After a decade of sustaining themselves on their love for each other alone, Lup supposes that’s the only explanation that matters.

Lup's heart skipped a beat in her chest.
Oh fuck.
She put a hand over her mouth, eyes wide. Just a few feet from her was Barry, hair tousled and arms stained with oil. He was fiddling with a little robot and it kept shocking him and laughing and oh fuck. Holy shit.
"Just tryin' to help ya, bud," Barry said, but he had been laughing too (shit shit shit shit, she loved his laugh.) He went back in with his tools and the robot zapped him again, laughing gleefully. Barry put his head in his hands, face red, shoulders shaking as he joined in.
"Lup, look at this kid!" he said, voice all joy. "He's a menace!"
Oh, oh no. When had she fallen this deeply in love?

A Mixed Bag of Nuts
Taako and Kravitz get a new cat. They can't decide on her name, so Lup and Barry are invited to weigh in.
The link to read on Ao3 will be in the reblog!
-
"Cool Barry."
Barry didn't bother to sigh. He did, however, pick up his book from the coffee table and drop out of the conversation.
Lup did sigh at her brother's suggestion. "You're not naming your new fleabag 'Cool Barry' as if my husband isn't the coolest guy I know."
"There's no accounting for taste," Taako said, sticking his tongue out at her and crossing the name off his list.
"What about Her Lady Darkness of Eternal Suffering?" Kravitz asked, looking up from his own list.
"Babe. Babe, no," Taako said, shaking his head. "Look at her. Absolutely not."
Kravitz looked around. "Where is our sweet little Belladonna of the Night?"
"Also no," Taako said. He leaned over the arm of the couch to check some common kitty hiding spots. "She's probably just settling in, finding her favorite sunny windows. Whatever."
"C'mon, Taako, give me a couple more. Rapid-fire, hit me," Lup said, waving him on.
"Alright, alright. Let's start with... Angus."
"No."
"Dad'n'port."
"He would feel simultaneously so honored and so angry. No."
"Are you sure on Cool Ba-"
"Absolutely sure. Next."
"Lup But Never Lived In An Umbrella."
The twins' screeching started to sound genuinely angry. Barry glanced up from his book. He flinched slightly when Lup stole Taako’s pen and threw it in back at him, but relaxed when it missed by half a foot. He chuckled when he saw Kravitz eyeing the Fantasy Fire Extinguisher in the next room. Barry was more than familiar with the types and tones of the twins' fights. This one wasn't as bad as it looked. Kravitz would learn soon, too.
Barry was about to settle back into his book when movement on the edge of his vision caught his attention. A small grey cat was staring at him from the doorway to the sunroom. He smiled and slid down the couch towards her.
"Hi there," he cooed. "How are you liking it here?"
As if in answer, she glanced at the twins, who were now cuddled on the couch. They shoved Kravitz with their legs into a smaller and smaller section of cushion. They were still screaming at each other.
"Oh, yeah, they do get kinda loud." He chuckled. "You'll get used to it, I promise."
She gave a quiet, crackly mew. Barry held out a hand and she trotted over to nuzzle into his palm.
"Yeah, you'll do just fine," he said, scratching down her back. "You seem like you enjoy attention. That's a common trait around here. We'll all spoil you rotten in no time."
Lup fell off the couch with a thump. The cat twitched at the sudden noise. She evaluated Barry for a moment, then sought refuge between his thigh and the arm of the couch. Barry adjusted a little so he could read and pet her at the same time.
"Now, don't you tell the twins," he whispered, "but we spoil them rotten, too. The other crew members and Krav and me. But they'll never admit it. ‘Cause then we might stop spoiling them. Just like I'm sure you won't admit it when it happens to you."
Barry and the cat settled in together while the twins fought on. Every now and then, Kravitz would call his name, trying to get him to intercede. Barry barely pretended to "help," not looking up from his book for any interruption. He would call out for one or the other twin to stop whatever behavior was distressing Kravitz. Hair pulling, outfit criticizing, someone calling the other “sour little Lulu Lemon,” someone singeing the other's hat brim - the usual Taaco Twin Stuff.
"He's just as dramatic as the two of them," Barry said to the cat. She had been purring for a few minutes. Between that and his book’s plot picking up steam, he was starting to see the appeal of animal companions.
“Barold? Babe?”
Barry hummed in question while turning the page.
“Who you talkin’ to?”
“Oh, just lil Peanut.” He gave the cat an extra scritch behind the ear.
A hand yanked the book from his grasp. Barry made a distressed noise and reached for it, looking up to see who had interrupted him.
“Barry J?” Taako looked down his nose with a stony expression. “What did you just call my precious Mew-hann?”
Barry held out his hand for his book. Taako held it farther away.
“Is that what you guys settled on? ‘Mew-hann’? Cause- cause if that’s some kind of pun or goof on Johann’s name- It sounds more like a bad Fantasy Jedi name a kid invented for himself for a friend’s Kittens and Fantasy Star Wars themed birthday party, bud.”
“That’s basically what I said!” Lup said, bouncing across the room and taking the book from Taako as she did. “Or, I said it sounded like a Fantasy Star Trek species name.” She stretched out on the couch Barry was on, wiggling her fuzzy sock-clad toes under his leg and thumbing through his book instead of handing it back. “But I gotta say, I kinda like the sound of Peanut for the little fuzzball.”
“I can’t believe you,” Taako said. “Here, no, listen, she doesn’t like it either. Look.” He turned to face the cat. “Look at papa, Peanut!”
She did that.
Taako spluttered. Lup cackled.
“That- that was a- That doesn’t mean anything!” Taako said. “Lup, you call her. Use a different name, but use the- the- y’know, cat baby talk voice I used.”
Lup sat up to get a better view of the cat on the other side of Barry. “Hello, Ebony Sacrifice!”
The cat yawned.
“That means nothing!” Taako insisted. “My cat will not have a- that’s not a good enough name! We’re not calling her that!”
“Peanut! Come to Kravitz.”
The cat stretched and hopped off the couch Barry and Lup occupied. The room was silent as she crossed to Kravitz’s couch, rubbed up against his shins, hopped up next to him, and curled into a little kitty loaf.
“Huh,” Barry said.
“I hate you,” Taako said.
“The name’s kind of growing on me,” Lup said.
Kravitz sighed. “I was really hoping that Queen Vampiria, Destroyer of Realms and Hearts would be the one” He crossed off the last entry on his name suggestion list.
A/N: Barry “Are you afraid?” Bluejeans: The twins and Kravitz are so dramatic.

A continuation of this voidfished blupjeans ficlet here
Lup wasn’t sure how she got in this deep this fast. Like, she could remember it all perfectly fine, but whenever she thought about it, none of it made that much sense. There wasn’t anything too crazy, it was all just a little too nice to be real.
Barry came back to see the show the next night, and Lup had been more excited to see him than she expected. They talked after the show, and it was just as easy as it had been the night before. Just as natural.
She kept better focus on what she was doing as they talked this time though. She found herself reaching towards his hand a few times, but she stopped herself. She could stop herself, without the desire to actually going away, which meant this likely wasn’t some sort of charm or spell.
She just happened to be utterly charmed by this bumbling dork who snorted when he laughed, and she had no rightful idea why. She didn’t really care though.
“We’re heading out in the morning. We got another show in Rockport in a few days we gotta get to,” she said, and it was really getting late. They’d finished cleaning up from the show, and now it was just her and Barry sitting out by the cart. Taako had already headed in, and he at least stuck around and spoke more than he had last night. He still seemed a little suspicious, which was fair. This wasn’t-
This wasn’t how they did things.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been there. Don’t think I’ve traveled much at all, really,” Barry said, and it sounded uncertain, like he couldn’t be sure if that was true or not. Instead of questioning him about it though Lup simply nodded.
“It’s all Taako and I’ve ever known. I guess it’s freeing, not being tied down to one place,” she said, and Barry seemed to think that over.
“Well, if you ever feel like coming back to this place, I’ll be here,” he said, and it was simple enough. It shouldn’t have been anything to make it feel like her soul was on fire, and yet here we were. “You know I’d drop everything to catch another one of your shows,” he added, and Lup grinned at that.
“You’d just ditch your class right in the middle of it?” she asked, and Barry smiled right back at her as he nodded.
“Absolutely. It’s not like my students would complain,” he said, and Lup laughed at that.
“We’ll have to keep that mind,” she said, and even as the words left her mouth she told herself not to get too hopeful. That nothing was going to come of this. She’d leave and Barry would forget about her and she’d forget about him and things would go back to how they used to be.
They left the next morning, and a part of Lup tried to forget. To push the strange encounter to the back of her head.
Two months later her and Taako headed back to Neverwinter. It was a big city, they usually got a good reception there and they could always count on a big audience. She told herself that was why they headed back so soon.
She told herself she wasn’t looking around as they started setting up the show, that she wasn’t hoping that he’d seen a flyer or heard about it on campus.
She kept telling herself all that, but none of it made her any less overjoyed when she saw Barry working his way through the crowd. It didn’t make her grin dimmer or her wave less enthusiastic as she tried to get his attention. He looked just as delighted when he caught her eye, practically running over to her.
“You came back,” Barry said, and there was a relief in his voice that nearly knocked Lup on her ass. It took a few seconds before she managed to find her voice again, and another few before she could figure out what to actually say.
“Never had a place to come back to before. I could get used to it.”
