My parents are extremely fortunate to have many snuffly-nosed, prickly visitors to their garden 🦔🦔🦔 Sadly we are hedgehog-less so I’ve been planning to stitch my own little friends for some time…and here they are! My new Autumn Hedgehog is taking a rest from an early evening’s forage under a bramble, while a bee flies past on his way home to the hive before the evening chill comes…🍂🦔🐝 . There are lots of different ways to make boxes - I’m quite traditional and prefer to avoid glue and tape. This doesn’t mean I don’t like glue, quite the opposite (UHU is a particular favourite for all things paper-related), but it can be unforgiving and doesn’t always stand the test of time. . I like to lace the lining fabric and embroidered pieces onto mount board before stitching the panels together. Lacing gives you a chance to adjust and centre fabric patterns or the embroidered panels. Stitching the panels together allows you to wriggle the panels into position to make sure the lid and base fit together snugly - and if you’ve misjudged the size of the card, you can always undo the stitches and lacing without damaging the fabric…🪡🧵 . As you can see from this detail from my Bobbin Box for Bees, another bonus of stitching panels together is the strong, near-invisible joins you create. All held together as if by magic! . People often ask me how I have the patience to stitch, but I’m not sure patience is quite the right word…’tenacious’ maybe? ‘Curious’? ‘Determined’? Sometimes it can be frustrating (such as when you think you have the perfect solution but what’s in your head doesn’t work in thread, and it all has to be undone…again…🤦‍♀️) but it’s mostly deeply satisfying. . So alllllllll the rain fell in London at the weekend - in fact they had so much, there wasn’t any left over for us! The pictures of the flash floods down there have been extraordinary, and I do hope those of you in London are keeping safe and dry ⛈⛈⛈ . Even without the forecast rain here, it’s a fraction cooler and the humidity has dropped slightly so I’m much happier and getting more stitching done 🥳 .
