from "the blue carbuncle"
this episode really showcases holmes' emotional side. in my opinion, holmes' palpable disgust and disdain in this moment surpasses any other scene in the series. in the next scene, holmes declares passionately with frustration, "i am not retained by the police to supply their deficiencies." i consider that quote to be the most important line in the entire canon of sherlock holmes.

See, the fun thing about this one is there's not even a client - Holmes is involved as a favour to his neighbour which has been fulfilled. The commissionaire wanted a hat and a goose reunited with its owner, Mr Baker has his hat and (a replacement for) his goose, and the only reason they're carrying on with this is that Holmes can't stand to see a man wrongfully imprisoned at Christmas.
And they say he doesn't care :)

Now this is the time when Holmes is in the right to be arrogant and stern. Ryder committed a crime out of greed, set someone up to take his fall, fully aware that the other guy would be hung for a crime he didn't commit, and now he's sobbing and wailing about how... *checks notes* getting punished for his misdeeds would break his parents hearts? No wonder Holmes is disgusted with him.

I believe they share most everything anyway…money in one’s pocket will feed the other…or take both to a concert…or a Turkish bath.

All I can say is that I love this speech a lot.
(It also confirms that this is a world in which snakes drink milk, geese have crops, and blue rubies aren't called sapphires--)

I watch the Granada Brett episode of The Blue Carbuncle every year just before Christmas!!!

"See here, sir! See what my wife found in its crop!" He held out his hand and displayed upon the centre of the palm a brilliantly scintillating blue stone...of such purity and radiance that it twinkled like an electric point in the dark hollow of his hand.
This print is inspired by the Sherlock Holmes story "The Blue Carbuncle": 'tis the season for wild goose chases, and of course, larceny (if you can bring it off).
