Apparently the "Be my coach!" scene was originally going to be an bonus scene in the blu-ray until Sayo changed her mind and added it in the aired episode. Tbh, I think it would've been better the scene HAD stayed as a bonus. It's a brilliant piece of writing but I think the reveal took away the direction of the story for many viewers: from Yuuri's personal journey for gold into Victuuri Fairy Tale Ending. It became a distraction that's difficult to shake off because it's done almost at the end.
Another thing that I find a bit problematic about the reveal is that now that a large part of the audience got recalibrated into focusing on the romantic aspect of YOI, Yuuri's character got shafted. Plot twists reveal something we believe in the story as true to be false all along. The post credit scene undermines Victor's motive for coaching Yuuri in Ep. 4: "That he saw potential in Yuuri" since now we have another explanation for Victor's action: Yuuri asking him "Be my coach"
What I read was that they didn’t know how to add it into the series without breaking the flow of the story, so it was going to be a bonus before Sayo thought of making it the ending of episode 10 and do it in photo format. Bless her.
I personally love the reveal and I think it was really important in how it affected people’s perception of Victor (and validated mine). I mean I’ve sung my praises to this scene and why I find it important but I see exactly what you mean. I don’t think that was the intent of the scene at all but you can’t control how your audience interprets something.
Even though it’s been said in interviews (and I personally think it’s still obvious in the series) that what made Victor decide to coach Yuuri was the Stammi Vicino video, people still say it was the banquet. The banquet may have put the idea in his head, but Victor still went on with the rest of the season, he still didn’t know what he was going to do once it was over. The video was his answer, his call.
But really, that particular fandom reaction would still have happened, it would just have been later down the line :/

Alright let’s take a minute to breathe. Yes, the wttm shit is fucking gross as hell, Yes, we shouldn’t be happy with it, and yes you are absolutely entitled to hate yoi and the makers for it existing, and of course you can drop the show. I am not here to defend the stupid extra. I fucking hate it. If I could I’d erase from existence, I would.
What I am here for is to gently remind you that there’s a good reason it was an extra that was released with the blu ray, and not a part of the actual show. To sell them. It’s gross and awful, yes, but by sheer nature of it being bonus material, it generally means the show isn’t going to entirely change gears to that. Why? Because that’s not why people watched Yuri!!! on Ice. No one got into YOI for that. We got into YOI for Yuuri, and Viktor, and they will always be the center of the show. It’s not ever going to be about the gross pandering bullshit. Kubo might fucking love pandering, but the whole team can’t possibly be so bad at marketing they’d switch their market base to something smaller. It’s counterintuitive.
Should we be unhappy with wttm? Abso-fucking-lutely. Should we do whatever’s possible to keep this gross shit from ever returning? Totally. I’m just here to remind you that the likelihood of the show transforming into being about the gross fucking shit is slim to none.
Still once again, you’re absolutely entitled to lose faith in yoi, and to drop the show, in reaction to this disgusting ass shit. Your feelings and reactions are valid. I am not in any way trying to force you to stick around. But for the rest of us who aren’t ready to do that, and don’t want to, this is me trying to reassure you that this garbage won’t stick.

Could the pair skate plagiarism be due to Yuri on Ice's production schedule collapse? The possibly's been talked about for a while now especially after the episode 4 debacle. Plus, MAPPA has a relatively small staff and they've taken on lots of projects lately so they're overworked and outsourcing a lot. Flip Flappers is another animation heavy series this season and its finale suffered too. Hopefully, they'll fix it in the DVD releases just like did with Victor's apartment.
I suppose so, but again that’s not an excuse. Anime studios have faced these limits, time and time again, and they’ve managed to make do without copying others. If anything YOI staff’s reaction to the situation with Viktor’s room has been incredibly unprofessional imo - they changed the room in the blu ray, but no one, not Kubo, not the official Yuri on Ice Twitter, no one has officially admitted to their wrongdoings. Just make an official statement at least, god.
(Can’t comment on Flip Flappers having not seen the finale).

What's your problem?
Judging by the timing of this, I’m going to assume you are talking about my reaction to Yuuri winking in the YOI blu-ray release.
Long story short: I have an opinion. And I’m allowed to have it.
Long story under the cut.
As a person who is (what I like to call) subtly gay, I was thrilled by how YOI handled the gay couple. Maybe they were censored to that point, but I loved it. It was not the typical, flamboyant, loud gay that I often see represented in media, which has become the stereotype of being gay. So much so that when I finally tell the people in my life that I have a girlfriend, they think I’m joking because I don’t fit that gay stereotype.
I liked that Yuuri wasn’t flirty, and wasn’t so out there about being gay. To me, Yuuri being gay was more of a character attribute than it was his personality. I connected with that on such an emotional level that I clung to this character as my representation in the LGBT+ community in regards to fictional media. To see him being so openly flirty just makes me want to cry, especially since we see he is still so insecure and shy just later in the same episode.
To me this (as well as some of the other changes) goes completely against this amazing character they gave us. A character who gives us the first real representation of anxiety I have ever seen. A character whose story is built on the fact that he lacks confidence in himself and even at the end of the first season, after finally getting up the confidence to put Viktor before himself, found a different confidence that required him to let go of his selfishness (and really his pride that had been a huge trigger in his anxiety) to ask Viktor to stay with him.
My Yuuri is not confident enough to wink at and flirt with Viktor in front of all the skaters he will be competing against the next day, not to mention their coaches. My YOI is not full of cliches about being gay, even when it comes to Viktor who is probably the one who screams gay the loudest, but is still very tame about it when compared to other gay men in media.
That is my opinion. I am allowed to have it. The same as I am allowed to not want anything to do with this new YOI. This does not mean I do not love YOI anymore, I simply love the original YOI more. I don’t think it needed all of these changes.
