What's good about KnH is (besides its main char and bc of Maomao) the way it manages the power dynamics and what life was as a woman without falling into utter pessimism and powerlessness or full romanticism; which is a reason I usually avoid like the plague historical/pseudo-historical fiction with female leads.

Usually I'd be super skeeved out by the power Jinshi has over Maomao but the way the series presents both of them, their personalities and their agency (limited as it is for Maomao but it's there and it counts very much) it brings out all the best and interesting parts. I trust this series to get twisty with them bc it establishes so well Maomao own character and understanding of her situation and the ways Jinshi can and does or doesn't take advantage of his power over her.

Like. It's presented as a problematic element, but also unavoidable given their social situation and the world they live in, so I can trust given everything else this show has done when solving the mysteries and presenting us the situations of other women, that the romance will be treated with that same weight.

Honestly if you've read over what I like to read/watch in my tumblr you'll notice that twisty and even toxic/unhealthy dynamics are very much within my favorites, but it needs to be told in a certain way. And I'm much more difficult to satisfy when talking about het romance.

So to watch KnH, notice it's primarily about Maomao life and the various misteries/medicines/palace intrigue and the romance is playing second fiddle riffing on all the themes presented on the plot? And it's complex, and plays with messy power dynamics of gender and class, but never loses Maomao her personhood? Wow.

Also. Jinshi is so BL chara coded omg XD like, he's very clearly based on a kind of shojo ML prototype (hello tamaki suoh!) but it also pulls from BL in his case (nothing to do with their romances but I think of Yan Xiaohan re:his relationship with the imperial power, from Golden Terrace lol)

And yet his romance with Maomao wouldnt work near as well for what is trying to say if they weren't a man and woman (which I love in their case, is what has me fascinated). Yes~! Get into the meat of how fraught it is for a man and a woman to be together when the man has so much power over her. Get into it!!!!

He's so so messy and fun as a chara too. Sheltered and not at the same time, you really notice all the things he misses by way of his privilege of being a noble born man (and specifically royalty, last ep (19) left that very clear he was doing a ritual probably by proxy for the emperor and also bay exchanges people. Maomao noticed and buried that thought far far below her subconscious but we all now who he is lol). Like. The way he fumbles and ends up essentially harassing Maomao at the start sometimes, which is both played for comedic effect and also upsetting. Mmm.

Like I said, I like complexity.

Also that part when he buys Maomao contract and he goes to collect her and she's all dolled up, and the clear implication by everybody but our mains (who clearly prefer to live in willfully blind land although for Jinshi I think the subtext of what he's doing lands when he sees her) is that in any other case she'd be his concubine/side-wife. It's not their situation wight now, and she's put to work as a live-in maid and apothecary and put to study (he wants her to assist him in politics lol I love that, but also he's so so lonely) but it's very much what the palace rumor mill says.

LIKE. I love the messiness! It could go soooo badly, but it also could not and there's Maomao living at the edge bc despite herself and what she says, she wants more from life, but also as she says the rear palace isn't all that different from the high class brothels and ugh. That tension. She has to depend on the favor of a man as a women of low class but she also could lose her head! GAH. And then there's feels involved! Aaagh.

But oh God was he an asshole.

You really hated his guts, at least you thought you did, maybe annoyance was the word for what he made you feel? You couldn't stand rude or mean people, you really didn't get what his problem was.

However, when you asked Chigiri, the Kunigami that Chigiri described was with him in the Blue Lock program was a completely different person than the one you had interacted with the last few weeks in class. Maybe somehing happened to him? You didn't know exactly what but it must have been terrible for him to do 'a complete 180' as Chigiri described. You really wanted to stop paying attention to him, stop interacting with him, yet you couldn't help glancing his way when he entered your shared class.

Something that drew you to him, maybe you were kind of a masochist? Those BL manhwas were starting to get into your head. Daydreaming about this rude guy, built like a brick, mean to everyone but you, traumatised by something terrible. You could fix him. And as much as you wanted to convince yourself you could, it was anything but realistic.

Kunigami looked down on everyone and mostly stayed out of your way when you came over to study with Niko or Chigiri, yet, you found your eyes never leaving his figure when he exited his room, eyes glued to his toned arms and, dare you say, pretty face. Maybe you were delusional, always bringing stuff to share with them and without realising it, getting him something too even if you knew he wouldn't take it. You couldn't help being kind to him even if he proved to be indifferent to you gestures.

Seriously, what the everloving fuck was wrong with you? You'd be better off liking someone like Yoichi from your mandatory sports class or even Yukimiya from english literature, but you had to get your eyes on the rudest, most insufferable guy on campus.

In an effort to completely put distance between you and Rensuke, you stopped studying over to their dorm, opting for going to a small café near campus and changing your seat over to the far back.

As a few weeks passed by, you kind of forgot about your small infatuation with Rensuke. After all, I seemed it was nothing short of a crush.

In this past weeks, you began speaking with a guy in your class, doing some paper on the hero's journey in fiction books, you grew closer quickly and before you knew it, you had a date.

This of course prompted you to talk about it excitedly with your friends, during a break you had from class. And later on, bragging about it to Ryusei, who complained about not scoring a date with Rin's brother of all people.

And as the day came, you found yourself waking up slightly earlier to get ready, your make-up and outfit casual but sweet, nothing too big or flashy.

Once you got there, no one had arrived at the place you were supposed to meet in.

He's probably late, after all you're thirty minutes early. You'll wait.

After twenty minutes had passed from the time you'd agreed on, you began getting anxious, checking your phone for any messages or calls you might have missed from him but none arrived. Deciding to call him up, immediately noticing he had been online a few minutes ago. The call went unanswered, a simple 'sorry, I think we are not a good match.' following up in the message app you had been checking for the last twenty minutes.

You began to feel stares on you, couples whispering to each other while looking in your direction. Maybe it was your anxiety, but you couldn't shake the sadness that washed over you like a wave, drowning you in self-doubt and insecurities.

Was something wrong with you? Was it that you came on too strong? Were you boring? Weird?

Sighing and preparing to leave, ego bruised and tears of humiliation begining to appear in your lashline, someone sat right in front of you.

A voice you recognized apeaking up over the chatter of the place.

"Hey"

"Come to laugh at me, Rensuke?"you bit you lip, tears threatening to fall. "Really not in the mood now," you looked down, the first tears sliding down your cheeks "Please just go.." you spoke, your voice was barely above a whisper. You seriously felt like just going home and crying while playing a funny Ryan Gosling movie to cheer you up slightly.

"Now why would I do that?" You stared at him dumbfounded, "I'm here to keep you company while I rest." He flagged down a waiter, ordering a piece of your favourite cake and a glass of water, "Besides, really needed some water, forgot mine."

You scoffed softly, although it sounded more like sigh, "You don't eat sweets, what are you really doing?" You looked up at him, drying your cheeks and looking down at you hands. You didn't want to look at him more than necessary, each time you looked at him, your heart began to beat a like faster, but you didn't want to make assumptions that he was here for you, besides, the pain of being rejected and stood up was still fresh in your chest.

Rensuke looked at you, seemingly bored, but never taking his eyes off you.

"Are you done interrogating me?," he thanked the server gruffly, taking a fork and a small piece of the cake. "I was just on my run and happened to see you." he psuhed the fork near you, motioning for you to take the utensil, "Heard you talking to Shidou the other day, weren't you supposed to be on a date?" you took the fork and took the bite, it made you feel a little better.

You looked back at him, immediately noticing that his hair was slightly damp and there was some sweat sliding down his neck and face. "But this place is far from your dorm, you're telling me you went out of your route to get some water?" your heart raced in your ribcage, hoping he had done that romantic thing the main leads do when they realise they like the protagonist and chase after her, but you didn't want to get you hopes up, look where that got you. That was fiction after all, this was real life and the facts are that you got rejected because of whatever reason and Kunigami probably hated you along with ninety percent of the campus population. Your shoulders sagged in dissapointment as another wave of sadness rushed out of nowhere.

"I did, yeah." He looked away, sighing at you defeated state. Maybe this was his fault, maybe he should've said something sooner to avoid this mess. He took a swig of his water.

You looked at him with a small frown, motioning to his half empty glass, "You're free to go then, won't keep you hostage any longer." Kunigami shook his head, looking out the window next to you, "It's fine, I'll wait for you to finish up."

He turned his head towards you bored, emotionless eyes staring directly into yours. There was something different on his eyes you had never noticed before, did he want to say something?

Kunigami found that he couldn't stop the words from leaving his mouth, the feeling of almost losing you because of this stupid date, the fact that his chest ached when he found you sitting far away from him in class, the way he wouldn't see you in the dorms, studying or watching anime with Niko. Before he knew it, he had to come to accept the fact that he liked you. Every small glimpse he could get of you around campus felt like a breath or air on his strained lungs, he longed to find you waiting for his football practice to finish, looking towards the bleachers hoping to see your figure waving at him, but he never got the courage to even accept these feelings. He wanted to erase them, go back to the machine they had designed him to be, cold-hearted, mean. A wall had erupted between everyone and his feelings, yet you broke through it like it was made of glass, and all it took was a smile. Whenever you went to study, you'd buy them snacks, you got him something everytime, even if he never showed any affection to you. Before he knew it, you had him completely hooked. The old Kunigami resurfacing, soft, firm but gentle.

"I came here, because I was worried.. I just.." He ran his fingers through his disheveled hair. "You probably hate me, and won't want to hear what I have to say... but please just hear me out, you can tell me to piss off if you want after I finish." You sat looking at him stunned, you had never seen Kunigami act so different, he seemed almost desperate to say whatever he wanted to tell you. You nodded at him to keep going. This was weird.

His eyes softened "I like you." He dropped his head into his hands, the weight of his words and feelings sinking into his heart, thoughts of you leaving him there, rejecting him, distancing yourself from him even more had his chest thightening. He found it hard to breathe. The glass wall broke, his feelings flooded him like a wave, had you created a gap between you and him because you hated him in the first place? Had he said something wrong? Mean? Had he pushed you away the way he pushed his friends away? The thought made hot tears line in his eyes, breath shaky. He swallowed, trying to calm his racing mind and heavy heart, "I'm sorry, I never wanted to be mean or rude to you, I like you so much."

You blinked, you had never seen Kunigami cry. You reached over to grasp his hands buried in his face, gently peeling them away from his cheeks, warm and wet with tears, your heart raced and a small smile made its way into your face. Kunigami looked up at you, misty eyes looking into your softened eyes, waiting for the blow that would make his heart break again.

"I like you too." The words stunned Kunigami and he shook his head, heart stuttering in his chest against his will. "No you don't, I know you don't..." his eyes watered again, looking down to you joined hands as you reached one to cup his face, "Yes, I do" Kunigami looked up at you, seeing the smile in your face, warm, sincere.

"Then why-?" you didn't let him finish his question, shaking your head and looking down. "I was being stupid, should've told you how I felt since the start instead of playing around." You smiled at him, gripping his hand again, "How about we go and watch a movie? I think that'll be a good first date, don't you think?"

Kunigami stared at you for a second before his lips broke out into a slight smile, eyes full of warmth, heart sighing in relief and happiness. How long has it been since he felt this at ease? Always looking to be better, pushing his limits, withdrawing from connecting with others to avoid getting too close, letting them get too close.

"Yeah, I'd like that."

it's been a hot minute since I wrote anything in english, let alone fiction. I'm sorry if the pacing is kind of weird, I'm kind of used to slow burn and I kinda rushed this one, I'm sorry!

Pride Petty Watch (SOTUS) 4.5/5

I'm almost done watching my second blacklisted shows (Love in the Air and The Untamed are the others), but what was only supposed to be a five part rewatch for my former sworn enemy SOTUS has magically turned into six because the last half of this show is AMAZING! I suffered through four other parts to be here in this glorious moment (first, second, third, fourth), so what was supposed to be the fifth and final part is now two parts since I'm saving the finale for its own post.

I'm so fucking hype! LET'S GO!

The picture on Arthits vanity is of The Beatles and their song "HELP!" but I feel that image is speaking directly to me and Arthit because this queer crisis is hurting us both, and I need this boy to kiss another boy RIGHT NOW!

She dated Bright?! BRIGHT?! You know what? It makes sense. I would've done it to.

This awkward tension at the wedding is fucking delicious. Can't even stand next to each other without making it everyone's problem.

The fact that I forgot everything about this show even though this second half is doing everything I love is very telling of the fallout of the Krist bullshit. I'm not elaborating on that drama because if you know, you know, and if you try to gaslight me saying it never happened or try to defend him in retrospect, you can miss me with that bullshit, but in a way, I'm glad I forgot this show because I'm sitting here in 2024 losing my shit over Arthit grabbing Kong to stop him from walking away.

And making small talk about colors to keep Kong standing there because Arthit just needs Kong near him but can't sort his feelings out long enough to understand why he needs him. This is my special brand of drug.

And this is why confessions change things. Arthit can't just be nice to Kong anymore because it will give Kong hope. They can't be like before. Arthit can't have a friend because Kong doesn't want to be just friends. I am seated, sat, and sitted for this pink moment!

AND NOW WE ARE GETTING THE BRIDGE SCENE! Arthit is saying how awful he is and can't understand why Kong would like him, but baby, he likes you BECAUSE YOU ARE AWFUL! He likes that you yell at him. He likes that you push him around. He likes that you drink pink milk. HE LIKES YOU BECAUSE YOU'RE YOU!

Can he accept you?! Kong is the smartest boy in his class and possibly the school, and he wants to fuck you so badly that he looks stupid! So can he accept you?! BITCH, ALL HE WANTS IS YOU! HE IS LIVING AND BREATHING FOR YOU! HE DOES NOT EXIST IF YOU AREN'T TELLING HIM TO EXIST! KISS HIM ALREADY!

That Krist fallout involving kisses is popping back up to attack me and the show is trying to sell this kiss as something big with this background music (MUTE!), but I'm going to give it a pass because, in this moment, it works. Kong is surprised. The kiss is quick. Arthit is still reserved. I can work with this kiss under these conditions.

This entire sequence is saving the kiss moment. Kong is a puppy trying to play, and Arthit is not having it. My GIF is shitty, but the dynamic is elite!

And now Kong is fully embracing his BDE, and everyone in their friend group should know what's up because if I can feel the tension from my screen eight years later, they had to have felt the shift in the air in that hallway.

Kong drinking pink milk. Arthit trying iced coffee. Kong giving Arthit his heart. AND NOW ARTHIT IS GIVING HIS HEART TO KONG. My hair is shining. My skin is glowing. My immune system is thriving!

Singto and these damn eyes of his! This man can act, and I feel bad for his acting partners because they look weak in comparison to him, which is why He's Coming to Me is my number one Thai BL. Ohm and Singto were breaking my heart with just one glance, and here in this moment, Singto is telling me that Kong felt that icy shift from Arthit when he mentioned kids. The United States had barely implemented marriage equality the year before this, and now I'm in my feels all because Singto can fucking act.

And now that string bracelet is right there between them with Arthit saying Kong could take it off because IT'S DIRTY (break their bond because it's something bad), and Kong saying Arthit was the one who tied it (brought them together), and I NEED A DRINK BECAUSE I'M IN MY FEELINGS over eyes, marriage equality, and string bracelets.

I know I just wrote Singto can act, which implies Krist can't (and it's partially true and why I dislike him - I wrote what I wrote!), but Krist acting out Arthit's uncomfortableness when Prae sees them together is sitting in my throat in a way that makes me want to explode. He keeps shuffling back, crossing his arms, and looking away, until Prae asks if they came together, and even though Kong just said they were on a date, and even though Arthit was so happy about that, he immediately says NO and that they just randomly bumped into each other, and every queer in the audience is ready to breakdown over the trauma of our youth.

This episode is beating my ass on a Sunday while I was just trying to enjoy my tea. The barrier between them during this meal. The stunted conversation. All of it hurts, but what gets me the most is Arthit didn't switch his meal with Kong's. He didn't berate Kong for his 'baby food' choices. If Kong wasn't in pain before, he is definitely in it now because if there is one thing that Kong needs in this moment is reassurance that Arthit cares about him even if it's through punishment, yet Arthit is giving him nothing. Poor little masochist is really going through it at this table.

The way Arthit yelled at Kong to not touch him! This is so good. The second half of this show did not need to go so hard especially after that lackluster first half, yet here it is, giving me everything and more.

ARTHIT IS IN PINK! He is pink and telling his best friend that he likes a guy but doesn't want to ruin that guy's life because Kong is smart and handsome and could be with anybody, but Knot said what every BL boy needs to be reminded of is that Kong wouldn't be happy with anyone else but Arthit. Arthit cannot sacrifice himself when that would make neither of them happy. Arthit is exactly what Kong needs. Now go punish him so he knows you care.

Unlike Bright's casual use of "fag," this "queerbag" feels right. It's from one queer to another and it shows me that Arthit has accepted himself as a queer. Am I getting emotional over a man screaming "queerbag"? Yes.

Kong wrote Arthit a love letter where he states that he is disobedient, self-absorbed, and teases Arthit to the point that it stresses Arthit out, but only Arthit makes him happy, and the kink is staring me directly in my eyes. It is breathing down my neck. It is reaching into my soul. It is touching the deepest part of my heart, and I am in love with this!

The face that Kong (Singto) made when Arthit untied the string was the perfect way to punish this disobedient boy because two seconds later Arthit replaced it with matching bracelets and declared them as boyfriends in front of all his friends and God, and that's how you treat a masochist. That's the thrill you gotta give them. It's pain then pleasure.

I LOVE THIS FUCKING SHOW!

I love it so much that I'm excusing Kong's "I don't like men" because it feels right that he doesn't like men, only Arthit. Once again, watching this from a kinky lens has changed the way I view this plot. Before, I saw it as a BL and this felt like a cop-out, but now it makes sense that he doesn't like anyone. He only likes the one person who reprimands him and rewards him.

He is a dog, and I mean that with all the affection in my entire body.

Much better kiss. The first kiss was a test. The second kiss was a promise.

The smile after the kiss and the way Arthit scrunches up his body to be smaller because he is shy. My heart is exploding. I'm dying. I'm dead. I've died. Deceased.

I did not remember that Arthit spoke to Kong when he was applying to schools and convinced him to stick with engineering. This is so Thai BL of them, but I have no energy to complain about it because Arthit finding his home and queerness in a safe place and giving that to Kong is what I'm taking away from this.

Top 10 Cozy BLs!

Our Dating Sim made me realize we have a new sub genre of BLs happening right now: the cozy BL. 

I decided to invent/identify/name this new BL category because... I can. I crowd sourced (here in the hellhole) opinions of how to define it and what should go on it. The collective brainstormed and elected the following qualifications: 

low angst 

low stakes 

high domesticity 

a central relationship that is more cute than anything else

extra points for found family

AKA BLs that make you feel happy and comfortable. 

These BLs leave you feeling warm and safe, like a hot water bottle. I will list them in order of my personal preference when in the mood for “cozy.”

1. Our Dating Sim 

(Korea, Viki) 

Did I create this list for this show? Yes I did. It defines this category. It is a very low stakes, high domesticity, extremely warm and gentle second chance at love office romance. 

This is a fuzzy blanket of a story that perfectly suited KBL’s short-length tendencies. The pacing is... muuuuuah... chef’s kiss. 

2. Seven Days 

(Japan, grey in 2 parts Seven Days: Monday - Thursday | Seven Days - Friday - Sunday) 

 Popular first year Seiryo has a policy of going out with any girl who asks… for one week. On a lark, third year Yuzuru tests to see if that policy also applies to boys. Seiryo agrees that it does. Along the way they accidentally fall in love. Possibly my favorite BL of all time. It’s very gentle with us and its characters while still having that Japanese emo edge to it. 

A master class in quite yet riveting cinema. 

What, you doubted me? OF COURSE it’s on the list

3. My School President

(Thailand, YouTube)

GMMTV gave us a classic high school set Thai BL with tropes like messy boys singing their feelings that made this one Love Sick for the modern age with all the gentle sweetness and pining ache, but none of the dated damaging tropes or issues. Yes, we’ve seen it all before, but I still ADORED this, and that’s partly what makes it so comforting. Who let my BL be this wholesome and funny? 

4. See You After Quarantine?

(Taiwan, Viki) 

Be you never expected lockdown to be comforting? This under appreciated gem is Taiwan’s answer to Gameboys and is just as charming and adorable yet still as quintessentially Taiwanese as one might hope. It features a Japanese love interest and the cutest most confused disaster gay. Slow burn because the two have almost no actual screen time together and yet manage some truly amazing chemistry plus sweetly caring and earnest. Honestly how does Taiwan do it?

5. Ingredients 

(Thailand, YouTube) 

At the time (during lockdown) many of us referred to this as our “emotional support grocery store advertisement.” If all you want is two soft boys being domestic, cooking together, cuddling on the couch, cat sitting, and babysitting - just put this on and be comfy.

6. What Did You Eat Yesterday?

(Japan, grey) 

Basically the grown up version of Ingredients. Emotionally repressed, grumpy, salary man shows his hair dresser husband his love by cooking amazing meals. That’s it, that’s the whole show. There some queer fam drama, and blood-fam coming out drama, but mostly is husbands cooking and eating together and it’s great. Is it BL? Not really. Do we care? Not really. 

7. The New Employee

(Korea, Viki) 

This one is queer comfort, explicitly. If you aren’t queer you might not find it as warm and engaging. A near pitch perfect office BL with conflict derived from that setting. Also featuring found family and a lesbian bestie. Sweet & innocent (and out) Seung Hyun scores the office internship of his dreams. On his first day at work he gets into it with his cool reserved (and also v gay) boss. 

As you do. 

But things get romantic pretty darn quickly.

8. En of Love: Tossera & Future the series

Tossera = Younger boy wants to court older boy and does and… that’s it. No really that’s the WHOLE STORY. There is actually no angst, drama, or, indeed plot. But are they the softest bois ever to BL as a main couple? Yes, yes they are.

Future is... exactly the same thing. 

Are we mad about it? 

Nope. 

9. Oxygen 

(Thailand, YouTube) 

Softest seme in the universe sings his affection to the older boy at the cafe. Let the slow burn courting commence. Oxygen uses every BL trope in the playbook for one of the gentlest lowest angst BLs ever made. It’s a hyung romance (younger boy courts older boy) but very very earnest about it. Am I biased? Sure. This is probably one of my biggest comfort watches. 

10. Our Dining Table 

(Japan, Gaga)

Lonely salaryman and talented cook gets accidentally adopted by a college kid and his little brother. It’s a quiet cozy little parable of found family alleviating loneliness. Possibly too slow for some but definitely high up there for me with the best of what Japan can do (like Restart After Come Back Home), it’s only flaw (if I dare say such a thing) is that it is not really “romantic.” Lovely & sweet but the romance beats are being used to build a family relationship, not just couple intimacy, it’s OK with me, but not totally BL.

For me one of the hallmarks of cozy BL is that as a chronic rewatcher I find myself starting to rewatch these ones even as they are still airing. Oxygen was an icon of this (also my first watch-along and the reason I realized I really had a passion for BL)

My Ride (GaGa) - Thai BL grew up with this pulp - a truly lovely and special little show featuring the extremely rare pairing of sunshine/sunshine AKA a cinnamon roll couple. Mature explorations of relationships using one of the softest, sweetest and most innocent friends to lovers vehicles. Kindly, overworked doctor meets broken-hearted motorcycle taxi driver in an “other side of the tracks” slow burn romance. The support cast is excellent, making for great friendship groups and family dynamics. With honest queer rep that adds to, but doesn’t impede the story, and genuine conversation about the nature of class, wealth, and classism, not to mention communication, honesty, and respect for boundaries, you can’t go wrong with this show. Still that aspect makes me a little tense so I don’t find it as cozy as others do.

La Cuisine (GaGa) - sweet and kind of pure show, and like Thai desserts perhaps requires too much patience for a layperson. Because of the pacing and the focus on the bad girl character, I did dock it. But if you like stuff in the Oxygen vein, then this show is for you, and far better than most Thai BL pulps. That said, I suspect that I enjoyed it more than many would. Full review.

Frustrated and muddy from the fall she has lamentably taken, she crosses path with someone who offers to help her; a Lord who also seems intent on toying with her patience. Word Count: 1.7k

Gwyn turned around and threw her riding boot at her assaulter.

“OW!”

At least her aim was one thing she had not yet lost in these woods. She lifted her white day dress, now brown and heavy from the mud she had fallen into after her left foot had gotten deeply stuck, and readied herself to run for her life.

“Don’t even try to touch me, you brute.”

“For Christ’s sake, I do not wish to touch you, you psycho,” the man groaned as he rubbed the spot where her boot had hit his forehead. “I was just wondering if you were in need of help.”

Gwyn crossed her arms in front of her and puffed her chest. The pine green corset around her waist felt tighter from the water and mud that had seeped through the fabric.

If only she had been wearing her cloak when she had dismounted the horse. She would not have had the need to suppress how shivery she was. If only the grey clouds could part just enough for a ray of sunlight to warm her bare arms. She should have listened to her cousin’s warnings about the changing weather before she set off on this ride.

“Why would you assume that I need a man’s help?”

The man let go of his head with a sigh.

“Because you are covered in mud, walking alone and barefoot in a forest with a single shoe in hand, now none since you threw it at my head,” he pointed at the bump that was starting to form near his right temple, “and, you were cursing so loudly that I am convinced you have frightened all the surrounding animals away.”

Gwyn stared at him with an unimpressed look. She huffed, causing the few curls that had escaped her half ruined updo flying in front of her face. “Fair enough. But you didn’t have to attack me so.”

“I did not throw myself on you, miss. All I said was Hey.” His face and tone projected equal measures of incredulity and exasperation.

Gwyn stared at him, from head to toe this time. His skin was of a stunning shade of golden-brown.  He was dressed in a white shirt and black vest, black breeches and grey boots that rose up to his shin. The sleeves of his shirt was slightly rolled up, exposing strong arms that she could have guessed from his built alone. His attire was simple yet she could tell from the way he stood that he was not of the working class. But Gwyn knew not to be fooled by someone’s rank when it came to their intention.

The man also crossed his arms and matched her posture. His bright hazel eyes bore into hers as he tilted his head to the side.

“Forgive me miss but if I wished to harm you, I would have done so in the time it is taking you to make an opinion of me.”

He had a point, she reluctantly admitted to herself. Besides, considering the circumstances that she found herself in, it would be best to be kind to the only chance she currently had at being saved from this nightmare.

Gwyn had lost track of time while she had been riding around the unfamiliar area. She had already been in these woods for some time when she had realised that she could not find her way out. Needing a minute to stretch her legs, Gwyn had dismounted the black horse, unsuspecting that the first thunder would wait for this exact moment to make itself heard and scare the animal away.

“I apologise, sir. It is simply that,” Gwyn sighed and let her arms fall at her sides.  “I have lost my way through these woods. And my horse. And my boot. And my manners as well apparently.”

A few unkempt strands of his onyx hair fell in front of his eyes as he assessed her.

“Your way can be quickly recovered. Horses and boots are not so rare to acquire around here either. As for the last one...”

Gwyn raised an eyebrow. If she had not lost her other boot in that pool of mud, she would have been tempted to give him a matching bump near his left temple.

“It remains to be seen,” he continued, his lips tugging ever so slightly at the corners.

Gwyn rolled her eyes. She lifted her dress and made to turn around. “Good day, sir.”

Perhaps she would walk until she found her way out. Or until she passed out and got eaten by the bugs.

“Wait, miss. It was a jest. Forgive me.” The leaves beneath his feet crunched as he took a few steps towards her.

It was only desperation that made her stop and turn to him once again.

“Shall we start over?” he proposed.

He began to extend a hand to her, then, seeming to remember the rules of propriety, stopped himself and placed it behind his back.

“Very well.” Gwyn bobbed a small curtsy. The man did the same, bowing at the waist like any respectable gentlemen would.

“I apologise for interfering with your...promenade, miss. But I noticed that you seemed quite distressed. Are you perhaps in need of assistance?”

“Well, sir...,” she looked at him inquisitively.

“Lord Singer,” he said with a dip of his head.

Gwyn found herself surprised at having come across a Lord in the middle of a forest. Although she had not expected to find herself lost and soiled in this place but here she stood.

“Miss Berdara,” she introduced herself in turn.

“I do not know what about my appearance is indicating distress,” she said with a false air of nonchalance as she lightly swished her muddy dress around. This earned her a raised brow from Lord Singer that made her subdue a smile.

“But since you so kindly ask with your so good manners, I will take your offer of assistance.”

He chuckled, the sound as heavy as the current weather.

“How may I assist you?”

Gwyn thought about what she wanted most in this moment. A warm bath, a change of clothes, standing on a surface that wasn’t mushy and damp.

“Could you point me in the direction of the Forest House?” she settled on asking instead. Her family, especially her sister, would be worried sick if she did not return soon.

Lord Singer squinted his eyes and looked as though he was only now taking note of her.

“Ah,” he said after a moment. “It makes sense now.”

“What does?”

“The loss of manners,” he replied as though pointing out the obvious worsening weather.

Gwyn scowled. “I beg your pardon?”

“The attitude is also alike,” he said in contemplation.

Gwyn looked at him incredulously. If he was no assaulter, then perhaps this Lord was simply presumptuous and she needed to get away from him just as fast before he could insult her and her family further.

“You’re a Vanserra then,” he stated.

Gwyn stomped her bare feet petulantly on the ground as she walked closer to him. Only this close did she realise how much taller he was compared to her.

“I am a Berdara.”

“But you are related to them,” he said matter-of-factly.

The nerves of this man made Gwyn scoff.

“Cousins,” she admitted with a frown. “Does that not make me eligible for your assistance, my Lord?”

He smirked. Gwyn realised as she noticed the exact colour of his eyes and the dimple on his cheeks that she had never before stood this close to a man who was not a member of her family

“You have clearly inherited the Vanserra’s fire, miss Berdara.”

Gwyn did not know what to make of this statement. His eyes seemed to find her cheeks. The heat she had felt gathering there increased as his gaze roamed her face. Her own eyes travelled from his eyes, to his cheeks, then his nose and lips. Seeing him this close, she could safely admit that he was undeniably the most beautiful man she had ever laid her eyes on.

The sudden rumble of the thunder made Gwyn jump back in surprise. The Lord also took a hurried step back, his cheeks darkening with a flush.

“Well?”

“Pardon?”

“The directions to the Forest House.”

“Oh. Right,” he exclaimed.

Lord Singer looked towards the sky. Gwyn could not even guess the time that it presently was with the dark clouds concealing the sun.

“If you were to go on foot, I’m afraid it would take two good hours before you reach their land,” he explained.

Gwyn gaped. How far exactly had that bloody horse taken her? Well, she could not blame the horse when she had been the one to insist on exploring a place she had just set foot in the day before.

“My home however,” the lord continued, “is but a few minutes away. You can make yourself comfortable there for a while. I shall arrange a carriage for you once the weather gets better.”

As though he was some sort of weather God, a fat droplet of water landed on Gwyn’s nose just when the last word left his mouth. It was followed by a million more as it started to heavily rain.

“Oh shite.”

The lord froze at her curse then erupted in laughter. Gwyn could not help her own laughter from bursting out of her.

“Well then, my Lord. Are you going to assist a lady in distress or not?”

“Since you ask with such manners.” He bowed and extended his hand like he was asking her for a dance.

Gwyn rolled her eyes and took his offered hand, but not before she boldly swatted a hand on his shoulder. The sound of his deep laugh graced her ears again.

“Thank God you do not have more shoes at your disposal for I fear my body would have been found in these woods by nightfall.”

“I could always throw rocks, my Lord,” she said with a shrug.

She pushed aside a curl that stuck to the side of her face thanks to the rain.

“Azriel.”

Gwyn cocked her head with a silent question. More strands of hair fell in front of his face as well, curlier than they were when dry.

“You may call me Azriel,” he said.

She smiled. “And you may call me Gwyneth.”

Then, hand in hand, they started running in the direction of his home.

Hello! Welcome to my blog! I am 22 years old and an aspiring Diagnostic Medical Sonographer! I'm making this blog to document my journey from ground 0 to being a registered sonographer.

Allow me to talk a bit more about myself and why I want to go into this profession. I have been undecisive about what I want to pursue for about 4 years now. Ever since I left high school I have felt lost. I tried multiple majors, and none of them felt like they were the right fit for me. I was scared of going into medicine for several reasons, so the idea of going into medicine never really crossed my mind after that. I was scared, because I didn't know. I didn't know what types of jobs were available in the medical field, except for only a few roles. After some time and getting to know myself better, I thought hey, maybe me and medicine would be a good fit. I like to think of myself as smart and disciplined. I have a natural knack for science and math. I believe myself to be caring and empathetic. I am an introvert though, so that was a trait of mine that made me have doubts. I couldn't see myself being a nurse or doctor. I looked into some medical fields I could do with not much schooling, as I am paying out of pocket. 2c year degrees like nursing, respiratory therapy and radiology/sonography came up. The imaging careers caught my attention and from what I hear from others, it is a good medical career to pick if you are an introvert. I love kids, so I instantly thought of working with expecting mothers, or even specializing in pediatrics.

That's how I got here. Right now I'm trying to find a program, but they are so hard to find. I find some trade schools who offer programs, but they aren't accredited with CAAHEP. I find some programs but they have a huge waitlist and will not be accepting new applicants. Doesn't leave me with any nearby options it seems. I may have to go to a school kind of far. I'm still going to be doing research on programs near me, see if maybe I can find one or maybe the full ones start accepting applicants. In the mean time, I plan on getting myself into the hospitals. Someone I saw on tiktok said they would recommend entry level jobs, specifically if you can get one related to imaging. I've looked at the hospitals in my area, and even these entry level jobs have some requirements like BLS. I thought I had my BLS, but I only have CPR/FIRST AID/AED. So, my first step is getting my BLS, that way I can start applying for some entry level jobs and get experience while I wait for a program. The American Red Cross will be having some classes in my area and the beginning of next year, so I'm going to sign up for the class. It's 92 bucks, but hey, I want this! I want to be a sonographer! I want a good job that makes me happy. I was gonna sign up for the class tomorrow, but why wait? I'm gonna sign up right now!!!

What to do if someone has no pulse but is breathing?

It's been like twenty days since I got this ask but here are some recs. I do plan to type up a more detailed comment on them but that will have to wait for another day. going with queer stories for this one that aren't super known afaik.

I Have To Be A Great Villain / I Want to Be a Big Baddie (BL)

Plot: Our main characters gets cast to play the "villain" across various universes. Unfortunately, the male lead can read his mind and very quickly realises that the villain is not all that evil.

Comment: this dealt me so much emotional damage and I am One Fear about else will happen

When the Third Wheel Strikes Back (some flavor of queer, maybe poly?)

Plot: I was transported into the romantic fantasy novel my younger sister was reading, not as the male lead but as the second male lead. If I remember correctly, this punk is fated to go into war in the future and die in the male lead’s place. Okay, I’ve made up my mind. Let’s not go anywhere near the main characters and stay healthy until I can go home.

Comment: absolutely funny. I'm not finished/up to date, but I really enjoyed what I read so far. the character dynamics are hilarious. I was told they were poly but I haven't gotten that far yet!

Necromancer Survival (BL)

Plot: When the weak and unconfident Choi Yikyung first found out that he was a user, he thought he had finally hit the jackpot. In Yikyung’s mind, Necromancy seemed like the ultimate mix of cool and interesting. Back then, he had no idea that the Necromancer class was the weakest of them all! But as Yikyung enters the newly reopened Tower of Spirits in search of enhancement materials, he is sucked into a mysterious area of the dungeon where he encounters a frightening corpse. He makes a pact with a vengeful spirit to survive - and promises to help with revenge.

Comment: I am so unwell about them. mostly because I was reading a lot of dungeon/hunter type of stories and then got genuienly surprised when this turned out to be queer. also the art is so cute.

extremely readable and honestly hard to put down even though it usually takes me forever to read longer nonfiction books. also im kind of a weeaboo for ireland. loved the "personal history" format, which contextualized events in the author's life with concurrent political and social developments in ireland.

it's so lovely to encounter female characters like marcille, falin, and izutsumi (among others.) it also feels so validating and nice to see a complex central character of south asian descent in kabru. a very warm and kind story and I'm looking forward to season 2 of the anime...

honkai star rail 2.1 main story patch: "into the yawning chasm"

specifically, the story mission "all the sad tales" did it for me -- there is a video of me crying while playing through that part lol. playing from the pov of a character slowly having his mind broken as you progressively confront the emotional scars in his past, chasing his child-self through a warped landscape -- yup, sequences like these are why video games are one of my favorite storytelling mediums. which I did not think I'd ever say in reference to a gacha game...

I've been watching episodes of this like every day lmao so I had to include it... endlessly watchable and comforting in its formulaicity. I'm looking forward to meeting some of the other central characters soon...

idk anything about the source material but this was very captivating as a stand-alone nonetheless. a beautiful horror story... I need to rewatch it

the uses of literacy

I randomly picked up a used copy of this in a bookstore when I was vacationing in another country and found it to be really applicable to current culture and how people interact with media today, despite being written in 1957 and focusing specifically on the British working class.

Dead Friend Forever episode 12 blurb/series retrospective

wellllllllllllllllllllll that was the goriest, slasheriest, kill 'em-ness I've seen in Thai or any bl series

the episode was kinda short and the pacing made it seem rushed but not I'm sure if I really felt rushed or if it was just a breakneck pace

I do like that a lot of the theories and wishes weren't achieved/realized and the series still feels good. Like I know I wanted White and TanNew to live and at times Jin and Phee too but all of them ending up in this ceaseless purgatory slaughterhouse is kinda fitting. Non couldn't escape his fate due to the actions of others and the rest of the group couldn't escape the fallout aka TanNew's life implosion and his pursuit of vengeance for his brother and family

Cuz like yeah White, it truly seems, was just at the wrong place and wrong time. The theories and sentiment of White being part of some Perth and TanNew third killer ace in hole was nice and could have worked but it didn't happen and I don't feel the show really lacked for it

Like we saw one of the masked killers with crutches and the killer always had a maybe magic, maybe mundane vibe the show liked to play with. So perhaps Non really did survive somehow or maybe he just really had a rather unmarkable end after his harrowing captivity and enslavement

anywho standouts for the episode and series -

TanNew going full slasher - lovely, wonderful, great job Mio. You sold and I bought. And as an elder sibling, bitch I don't necessarily condone your behavior but I motherfucking understand you and also why you were Phee were destined to have a falling out. Phee did geniunely love and care for Non but the information that Phee had because Non specifically and intentionally lied to Phee meant that Phee could ultimately move on with Jin but TanNew was frozen in that grief and by Phee interrupting TanNew's attempt, Phee sealed his own fated too

Jin's hallucation montage - kinda campy in a good way and also like really modern. Like this type of voyuerism enabled by modern technology is really scary. Like gays have been fucking and sucking in bathrooms since before bathrooms were existed and will continue to (and last night at this bar I was at - there were several gays keeping me from peeing because they were fucking in the bathroom stall). So I compare how the leaked sex tape was used in this series with Only Friends and I do feel DFF really did that subplot and theme so much better

The first third of ep 12 aka the slaughter house - like it's a series so total suspension of disbelief to let the series tell me that Top can get shot in the stomach (or near enough) after a series of beatings and days of high stress and still have the gas in the tank for a final fight. But the tension and motivations were really high and going from the joker class clown who kinda started a lot of the Non ends up a slave plot by Top breaking Por's camera and Fluke mister always trying to keep my hands clean but always being near and having the truth but not sharing taking themselves out together was obvious symbolism to me and still really good. Then going from that to Tee being made to inadvertently kill his lover and the person who inspired him to better himself while White's last images are his boyfriend who he like 3 minutes ago learned was a really massive piece of shit and a victim and victimizer and (I don't know about Thai laws and accidental death or manslaughter and all that) but learning your bf is connected and inarguably one of the biggest participants in this Non situation surely must have not felt good, then he stabs you while you think it's because you're not pretty. Madness and chaos and really cool scene.

Phee, Phee, Phee, our series lead - overall I think Ta did a fantastic job. Like so many times, he would enter a scene and I would think "this dude has stage presence" - highlight of him was the revealation he was Non's boyfriend as he saves Non from his attempt. That episode and the one prior with this abscene were fine and good but when he came back onscreen, it was like, yeah, you've got IT. Now the finale arc with him is frustrating because of the discourse and the piety of people and shipping. Yes Non was groomed. Por is the closest person in series to call out the massive inappropriateness of Keng and Non. But it is critical to point out, that Phee did not know about that and saw Non being hugged and comforted by Keng, so he made the deduction that Non was hot for teacher. And then the disappearance and police stuff happened and Phee was motivated to find the truth. He was fueled by his own guilt at his last words to Non but even as he was trying to find Non, as he told his dad, he wasn't sure how he felt about forgiving Non because Non told Phee to his face there was nothing wrong and then Phee watches Non and Keng fucking. So yeah, it makes sense he could could join in on TanNew's plan but he didn't have the same stakes that TanNew did.

The mean girl messy clique worked because you saw that it was largely a friend of convenience for them and you had two different type of alpha girls (Por and Tee) and then a lacky Top and two people who seemed to be voting for the leopard eating face party because they didn't want their own faces ate

The heat was decently high and the NC scenes were really good, that ass slap is iconic

Lows

we didn't get enough with Jin. He was arguably the 2nd or 3rd most "important" character to this maybe and we just didn't get enough of him or his character for him to be fully realized for me

Overall BoC's second series was really good. I think they avoided the sophomore slump.
