i’ve been thinking, if im gonna be happy with a forever island i need places im able to change up seasonally! but it also has to be easy and not too overwhelming otherwise i just wont do it! here are some examples of my attempts on nordsea!
shrubs and flowers in small areas! a garden by ables and a pathway with pergolas🌸🌱
a tiny carnival build! Should be easy to switch up for events or just to change the colors of the large items☀️
#i have a problem with the shrubs bc i love using them#but i hate how most of them look in bloom! so im really thinking about that and trying to include them in ways i know i’ll like all year#nordsea forever island💛#nordsea#acnh#animal crossing#animal crossing new horizons#new horizons#acnh island#acnh exterior#acnh nordsea#acnh inspo#acnh spring#acnh seasons#acnh town#acnh able sisters#acnh garden#acnh carnival#acnh screenshots

Want to see some neat things about how irises grow?
Remember when I dug up and divided ALL of my irises at my parents' place a few years back? And how I ended up with 50 rhizomes, and I had bought 9 more just a bit before that?
Well, my mom wants to try to amend the soil because it's not great. Most of the irises have just been surviving, but not well enough to bloom, and everything else planted in the area struggles similarly. In order to amend the soil, though, I needed to dig them all up.
Again.
I dug up 44 rhizomes this time, which is honestly a bit better than I expected. I knew that not all of the ones I put in were going to survive, but I was still surprised by how many I just dug up today.
Anyway, the learning bit!
So irises aren't bulbs, they're rhizomes. Each year they put up leaves at one end, and over time they kind of end up migrating in that direction. If they do really well at gathering and storing energy, instead of just continuing forward, they'll fork, putting up leaves on two sides and a stalk with blooms in the center. The following year, the pattern continues, going forward from each side of that fork. If a rhizome does REALLY well, you'll end up with a bunch of forks spreading out.
The one on the left has survived, but not gone very far, and the white at the end shows that I accidentally broke some of the old rhizome off when I was digging it back up. It also happens to be a dwarf variety, so the rhizome is smaller to begin with; all my other photos are of intermediate and tall bearded irises with much larger rhizomes.
The one on the right has done well enough to grow forward for a few years, with the oldest of the rhizome at the bottom (still healthy and full of stored energy!) and the newest year's growth at the top. Looking at the rhizome itself, I'd guess that one is about 4 years (which makes sense, 'cause I think I did the splitting back in 2020).
The one on the left bloomed this year; you can see the flower stalk dried out in the center, and the new fork in the rhizome to the sides. Next year, they'll continue in those two directions, and it won't go forward from the stalk any longer.
The one on the right bloomed a few years back, and though it kept growing forward from there, it hasn't bloomed since. The other side of the fork also died off, and it's now only growing in one direction again.
Last but most certainly not least we have THIS beast. This one has bloomed the last two or three years in a row. I honestly can't tell if the guy at the bottom right is part of the same rhizome or another one I planted too close that got subsumed by this monster, because it took ten minutes to get most of the clay off and there was still more. I'll need to actually rinse it off with the hose to really see if it's all one plant or two.
But I'm 95% sure that this guy is going to bloom again next year because of those nubs down along the bottom. They were below the soil, and they're too thick to be new roots, so I'm guessing that's what future growth looks like. Honestly, this guy should probably be divided, but I also don't want to ruin the chance of it blooming next year, so I'm going to put him back in the dirt as is and maybe divide next year after blooming season.
Anyway, irises are my favorite, and I think it's intriguing how they work. I'm hoping that we can get the soil a bit more balanced and that they'll do better after replanting them, because even though I just dug up 44, we only had 4 or 5 bloom this year. They aren't thriving in the soil as-is, because for as long as they've been established we should have had more blooming than that. It was still the best year since dividing them, though.
I've brought a bunch of them over to my apartment and I'm going to try them out in containers, mostly the dwarf varieties I had. ONE of the dwarfs bloomed this year and it was gorgeous, but I'm hoping the rest will do better in new soil with some extra attention.
#irises#gardening#flowers#long post#I'm going to be digging clay out from under my nails for a week#honestly I don't think the clay is the worst part#I think the worst was where there's LESS clay and the water just drains straight through#oh that last pic you can see the rhizomes of the ones behind it which didn't bloom this year#but you can see the fork that shows it bloomed last year or the year prior#I DID plant them slightly below ground they just kind of eroded to the top over time#you're actually not supposed to plant them very deep and apparently should only cover the rhizome if it gets really hot where you are#one of the ones I dug up I had planted too deep and it forced itself back up it's like an S it's kind of funny#there's an iris grower in town that has THOUSANDS of varieties you can browse and purchase from every summer#her site says over 3000 anyway#I'm not allowed to go anymore :|#I have too many#but that's why I'm not going to be TOO sad if they don't survive in the containers#the thing that makes me saddest is the ones that keep blooming are not the ones I picked for myself#they're the kind of bland ones I picked for my mom or she picked for herself. Just a really normal pale purple. Meh.#the really fun colorful ones haven't bloomed yet and I've genuinely forgotten what they're supposed to look like ;3;#except for that dwarf I love him#I also found a few peanuts in shells in the dirt while I worked I think a squirrel must have been stashing them?

Halloween Costumes
With a love for animation, I also have a connection to consumer products and licensing, especially when it comes to toys and dolls.
Walked into a Halloween shop in Burbank today, just to see what costumes were there and watching the people consider them. One little girl got excited about an Addison costume from Disney's Zombies. What really got me excited was to see older doll properties still be sold. Take a look at these. Ever After High and Winx Club. Older properties and earlier versions, but glad there is still an interest in them.

Living in the countryside offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The fresh air, open spaces, and picturesque landscapes create a peaceful environment that fosters a deeper connection with nature. Daily routines often include waking up to the sound of birds chirping and enjoying breathtaking sunrises over rolling hills. Community ties tend to be stronger, as neighbors often know each other and come together for local events. The slower pace allows for moments of reflection, gardening, and exploring nearby trails. Overall, life in the countryside is a celebration of simplicity, tranquility, and the beauty of the natural world.

Where the West Begins
29. Jolene
Jim had led them to a restaurant and it was a happy group that sat around the table. McCoy was settled between Scotty and Chekov. The meal was good, but it wasn’t anything like Christine and Uhura’s cooking.
“How do you think it’s going at home?” Sulu asked.
“I’m sure Jaylah is handling everything capably with Keenser’s help,” said Spock.
“Of course she is!” Chekov said emphatically.
McCoy kept a smile off his face, but shared a quick glance with Sulu.
“It’s nice to have an evening in such a place once in a while,” Scotty said, bumping his knee against McCoy’s under the table.
“Lots of fancy ladies to look at,” Jim grinned.
“Look all you want kid, we know where your heart is,” McCoy said with a raise of his eyebrow.
Scotty and Sulu chuckled, while a hint of color climbed Spock’s face. While Jim had admitted to McCoy that he and Spock were together, neither had said anything to the rest of the ranch crew, though everyone assumed as much.
As Jim took care of the bill, everyone made ready to leave, standing up and pushing in chairs. Listening to Scotty joke with Sulu, McCoy’s blood turned to ice as a voice behind him spoke.
“Lenny?”
He stopped breathing, rooted to the spot, not wanting to turn around and face the past.
A hand touched his arm. Delicate fingers covered in a pale pink lace glove.
“Lenny?” The voice was sweet and light, but McCoy knew the poison it could hold.
With his heart pounding loudly in his ears he turned.
“I thought that was you!” A bright face, trying too hard to be youthful was standing in front of him.
McCoy couldn’t find any words. He had never wanted to see that face or hear that voice ever again.
“What are you doing out here Lenny?”
“Jocelyn?” he finally managed. Beside him he sensed Scotty stiffen.
“You’re a long way from home,” Jocelyn said, still smiling at him.
“So- so are you,” McCoy bit out, trying his hardest to be polite and not yell at the woman who had reached into his chest and ripped out his heart.
“Clay and I are moving to California,” Jocelyn replied, just a hint of a defiant look in her eye. “He’s taken a spot with one of the biggest firms out there.”
“That so?” McCoy couldn’t help himself and began to scan the room for the man who had supposedly been his good friend. In a far corner a man raised a hand. McCoy gave a curt nod back.
“You’re the last person I expected to see out here,” Jocelyn continued, looking McCoy up and down. Her nose scrunched a small bit.
“Same,” McCoy said, holding back from snapping the word.
“We’re all set,” Jim said behind McCoy. “Let’s get going? Oh.”
“It’s fine kid, I’ll be a minute,” McCoy said over his shoulder.
“Ok,” Jim said slowly.
“Leonard?” Scotty said tentatively next to him.
“It’s alright Monty,” McCoy told him, not taking his eyes from Jocelyn. He couldn’t help but note she was as fashionable as she always was, but somehow now it was in a showy way, as if she wanted everyone to notice her. When McCoy had fallen in love with her she had been the prettiest girl in town because she had seemed unaware of her beauty.
“Still a doctor Lenny?” Jocelyn asked.
“Yes, some.”
“Oh.”
“What?” McCoy demanded.
“You aren’t much dressed like you used to be.” Jocelyn raised an eyebrow and even though she was shorter than him by quite a bit, he knew she was looking down at him.
“Well, my patients aren’t big time crooks anymore who call themselves lawyers. I don’t have to be all gussied up.”
Jocelyn’s smile stayed on her face, but McCoy could see how it had become a scowl.
“I do honest work that I’m proud of,” he continued before she could say anymore. He straightened and squared his shoulders. “Tell Clay hello. Enjoy California, I’ll be glad to never see you again.”
He turned to begin walking away.
“What a mistake you were,” Jocelyn called at his back. “I married him the second you signed the papers and he’s done more than you ever will.”
McCoy’s hands curled into fists, but he forced himself to keep walking. He would not take her bait and turn around. Outside the restaurant, Scotty was waiting for him.
“The others headed back to camp,” Scotty said quietly as he fell in step next to McCoy.
McCoy gave a grunt as a response, still too angry with his thoughts roiling.
“If ye want to talk…” Scotty trailed off. He didn’t say anymore, just walked beside McCoy.
Somehow, McCoy found that soothing. Scotty didn’t expect anything from him, just offered himself if McCoy needed. Jocelyn had always wanted him to tell her everything, and he had shut himself down to simple answers. But Scotty…
McCoy looked over at the man beside, face lit by the lights of the city. His anger began to melt away. Here was someone who appreciated him for who he actually was.
“Thanks,” he whispered.
“Of course mo ghràdh.”
