It's as if we just exited film awards season and now we are in Emmy For Your Consideration (FYC) season and there is already talk about possible 2024 Oscar nominees with the excellent Ben Affleck directed AIR (an interesting and engaging look at how the Michael Jordan collaboration changed the landscape for Nike and athlete campaigns forever) being bandied about. Cannes Film Festival is in May, but before that we can see some of the more pedestrian films that will be adorning theater marquees in coming months thanks CinemaCon - the annual showcase for theater owners.
Hopefully no one will be getting served with legal papers this year!
CinemaCon's schedule
April 24 is International Day where there will be panels discussing the global disruption due to the pandemic, global box office and movie marketing.
Honored during International Day will be producer Barbara and her brother Andres "Andy" Muschietti (THE FLASH) as International Filmmakers of the Year and AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER will be honored with the Comscore International Box Office Achievement Award.
Sony Pictures is the studio to kick off the event. While they have not named a spotlight film, it's likely films that will be touted are: SPIDERMAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE and SPIDERMAN: BEYOND THE SPIDERVERSE
(trailer for the former will drop Tuesday) ,the sex comedy NO HARD FEELINGS starring Jennifer Lawrence, the live-action HAROLD AND THE PURPLE CRAYON, Neil Bomkamp's GRAN TURISMO live-action adaptation that stars Orlando Bloom so you know it will be pants, EQUALIZER 3, KRAVEN THE HUNTER, the untitled GHOSTBUSTERS sequel, Dakota Johnson's MADAME WEB
The rest of the sked
Tuesday: Will be Warner Bros. who are celebrating their 100th anniversary.
Films likely to be showcased include no-brainers like BARBIE, MEG 2: THE TRENCH, THE NUN 2, BLUE BEETLE,
Whose trailer drops tomorrow
AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM, a Timothee Chalamet double-header with DUNE PART TWO
and the musical WONKA, THE COLOR PURPLE, the sequel to GODZILLA vs. KONG, Bong-Joon Ho's MICKEY 17 starring the very talented, but face like a parking meter Robert Pattinson.
They will have a special screening and it will likely be THE FLASH.
Wednesday will be The Walt Disney Company. Thanks to their acquisitions Disney doesn't just mean their Disney branding but 20th Century and Searchlight.
Films likely to be showcased: A HAUNTING IN VENICE, Gareth Edwards TRUE LOVE, Taika Waititi's NEXT GOAL WINS, Jonathan Majors MAGAZINE DREAMS, PETER PAN & WENDY, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3, THE LITTLE MERMAID, ELEMENTAL, INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY (which will premiere at Cannes), THEATER CAMP, THE HAUNTED MANSION, THE MARVELS
and SNOW WHITE.
The evening Universal and Focus Features will highlight their upcoming slate.
Films likely to be showcased: OPPENHEIMER, FAST X, STRAYS, POLITE SOCIETY, Alexander Payne's THE HOLDOVERS, BOOK CLUB: THE NEXT CHAPTER, the animated RUBY GELMAN: TEENAGE KRAKEN, the adaptation of the 80s series THE FALL GUY cleverly titled THE FALL GUY starring Ryan Gosling, KUNG FU PANDA 4, the untitled PLEASE DON'T DESTROY film featuring the comedy trio of SNL writers Ben Marshall, John Higgins, and Martin Herlihy (the latter two being sons of SNL writers Tim Herlihey and Steve Higgins). Essentially they are the new Lonely Island, but not funny and no rapping skills.
and Wes Anderson's stacked ASTEROID CITY
Paramount will close out the night with a reception celebration TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS.
Thursday Paramount is back at the gate highlighting their upcoming slate. Likely to be showcase: The Tom Cruise juggernaut MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 8: DEAD RECKONING Part One(with a very likely teaser for Part 2), TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MUTANT MAYHEM, A QUIET PLACE DAY ONE (which comes out in 2024 but will be released before 2024's CinemaCon)
Director John Kasinski and his cast: Djimon Hounsou, Alex Wolff, Lupita Nyong'o Joseph Quinn.
*I remember when A QUIET PLACE came out and everyone praised that an original concept was having a success - that finally, no established IP was heading up the box office. Now there's sequels and prequels to this bish.
Lionsgate will have a special presentation of their slate.
The seminal literary masterpiece turned schalmatzy film, ARE YOU THERE, GOD, IT'S ME MARGARET , THE BLACKENING (with one of the best taglines I've seen).
*The skit it is based on
youtube
THE EXPENDABLES 4, WHITE BIRD: A WONDER STORY (yes, there is a WONDER universe now), SAW X, THE HUNGER GAMES: THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES and the DIRTY DANCING sequel.
including a screening of the raunchy comedy, JOYRIDE starring whose cast is being honoured as Best Comedy Ensemble at the event.

Included below is a list of (almost) every film I watched in January, 2022 and my thoughts about said film. Not included are films I rewatched or don’t care about enough to write about. Potential spoilers for all films shown in header
January 12th- Thelma (2017), directed by Joachim Trier
I really enjoyed Thelma. I enjoyed the visuals and the atmosphere especially, probably the most compelling wlw horror film i’ve seen. Her dynamic with her family is horrific and I like watching Thelma’s relationship bloom with Anja. Her supernatural powers being used as a manifestation of her realizing she was a lesbian and struggling with her attraction for another woman was a really good idea. I wish i had more to say about it it’s just really good in a way I cannot put into words fully.
January 14th- Piercing (2018), directed by Nicolas Pesce
I wanted to like Piercing, on paper it has some interesting elements and some scenes I enjoyed but I don’t think the ending was big enough for the somewhat slowburn build up it had. I really liked Jackie as a character, she was my favorite part, and I thought it was neat that the ending implies that there are going to be trapped within this cyclical dynamic of one wanting to kill the other and having the upper hand then losing it forever, but it was kinda just alright, wish it went harder and was more fucked up.
January 15th- If I Can’t Have Love I Want Power (2021), directed by Colin Tilley
This is the first ever album film I’ve watched, and I thought it was decent. I wished the plot followed the progression/order of the songs within the album instead of skipping around, but the plot still worked. I believe this is Halsey’s first acting job so I won’t be too hard on her about that aspect but it is clear, especially in the beginning, that her acting isn’t exactly the best. But overall it was fun but not the best thing ever, the costumes and makeup especially are stunning.
January 15th- Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), directed by Peter Weir
Oh I adored Picnic at Hanging Rock, my only real complaint is that I wish it didn’t spend as much time on those random men but otherwise I really enjoyed it. I have more to say about the themes of the film that I may save for a youtube video, but I really did love the overall experience of this film. There is such a mystery to the film and the setting, costuming, aesthetics, etc give it a hazy dream like quality. I like that nothing is really explained at the end, I love that aspect of the film so much. It definitely wasn’t as ‘horror’ as I thought it was going to be but I honestly didn’t mind. I maybe wish we got to see the girls a little more before they went missing but also I understand why we see them as little as we do before they go missing.
January 16th- The Virgin Suicides (1999), directed by Sofia Coppola
I don’t have much to say about this one besides just oh my god I loved it, definitely would have rewired my brain if I watched it as a teenager. I liked the element of ‘no one truly knew them’ and how almost everyone around the girls is trying to project onto them. I wish it spent just a little less time on the boys obsessed with them but I fully understand why it did so, so I can’t really complain. Definitely will rewatch whenever I need to feel worse, also I loved the Michigancore vibes the film has because it’s filmed in Michigan like they did that just for me.
January 16th- The Beguiled (2017), directed by Sofia Coppola
I wanted to like this film more than I actually did, I liked the set up and the dynamics between the characters are interesting but I don’t think there was enough time between ‘he lashes out against them’ and ‘they kill him’. I also wish they would have had the guts to kill not only the guy but the woman who was in love with him (Edwina), who iirc didn’t know he was going to be poisoned at that dinner. I think it would have been really cruel and a neat twist if Martha never allowed the girls to wink wink nudge nudge ‘the mushrooms are poisonous’ and let her die. Thought it would have been interesting, I get why it didn’t turn out that way but I kinda wanted something more dramatic than ‘they just poison him’. Overall I liked it but definitely not my favorite movie from Sofia Coppola, just wish there was more tension within the second half of the film. But, like the other films I’ve seen from her, it is visually quite stunning.
January 17th- I Blame Society (2020), directed by Gillian Wallace Horvat
I Blame Society has a really interesting concept, a film maker filming herself murdering people in an attempt to make the perfect murder, thusly making the perfect film. Almost everything I could criticize this movie for if it was another movie makes sense within the film’s universe- the lead actresses acting being a little bad makes sense bc her character is a filmmaker not an actor- of course she is gonna come off a little weird on camera, the editing being weird in some spots makes sense because she is presumable editing the film we are seeing. I really enjoyed it but the ending let me down. The ending, at least to me makes it really hard to understand within universe why we are seeing the film- how are we seeing this film that she, the character, is making if she presumably goes to jail at the end for murdering those guys? I’m not sure how I would have ended it, maybe her showing the news footage about her murders or even her telling those director dudes it was all real and not believing her. I don’t have a problem with her killing them but with her killing them and getting caught, she could have lured them somewhere and killed them when they told her they think it wasn’t real. I also really wish they didn’t use cgi blood, not because I hate cgi blood (which I do) but because if the audience is supposed to believe the film is a film made by the main character who is murdering all those people having cgi blood really pulls you from the experience, at least in my opinion. I’m sure they did it bc of budget constraints and not wanting to ruin the locations they were filming at but overall I liked it, a really interesting concept.
January 22nd- Ingrid Goes West (2017), directed by Matt Spicer
I was looking forward to this film because I liked the concept of ‘woman stalks influencer because she thinks she has a relationship/friendship with her’ but I don’t think the film went far enough. One of the reviews I read said that the film gave them really bad second hand embarrassment but honestly there wasn’t enough, there needs to be more. I thought the blackmail turned attempted kidnapping could have been handled better, it was a kinda weak plot point. Another problem I had is that Ingrid (the stalker) rightfully gets called out on her behavior but Taylor (the influencer) really doesn’t get called out for how fake, unoriginal, and shallow she is. Overall, it’s a decent movie but definitely didn’t go hard enough, the intro scene up until she actually interacts with Taylor are the best parts of the movie imo. Crazy Ex Girlfriend did the ‘stalking someone across the U.S’ theme a lot better.
January 22nd- Braid (2018), directed by Mitzi Peirone
Braid is a trip that I really enjoyed. The dynamic between the characters is quite interesting and I liked the theme of never being able to break from the cycle of the game they are playing, a horror they can never escape from no matter how hard they try. Some parts of the film are definitely for the sake of visuals over the plot but I didn’t really mind in this case. Because of the ending/the twist this is definitely a film I will rewatch in the future, I think rewatching it will help the viewer get a better understanding of the film overall- not that it’s a complicated film but it will put you in the mindset of the mother character instead of the doctor character.
January 25th- Don’t Look Up (2021), directed by Adam McKay
I’ve complained enough about this film but I think it was utterly pointless to make, how can you justify making a film about how bad rich people are and how bad climate change is and spend millions to make said film? Overall the acting is subpar, there are too many subplots that don’t matter, too many characters. The characterizations of the characters is extremely stereotypical and defined to one personality trait. The editing is really bad at times and it’s way too long, wish all the rich people at the end just got eaten by the monster birds or whatever that would make made my experience a little better.
January 25th- A Cure For Wellness (2016), directed by Gore Verbinski
Going in I really wanted to like this, medical based horror is really interesting and I liked the aesthetic the film has but it didn’t land for me. I liked the first half of the movie but the longer it went on the more I didn’t like it, the subplot of the main villain recreating his wife through his daughter doesn’t really make sense within the major plot of the film. I also don’t like how the main character was allowed to leave the wellness center throughout the film, it really killed the tension. The main character kept leaving and then being brought back so much that it was getting boring and repetitive, there was no real feeling of isolation or suffocation from the wellness center as a location, the location never felt like a true element of horror it just felt like ‘the setting’. The horror elements of the medical based horror was interesting, I wish they used elements of water horror and the eels more. I really liked Mia Goth’s character I just wish her relationship with the main villain/her father was more ‘I have to keep you here/keep you weak so you never leave or the world is too unhealthy for you’ instead of what it really was because I don’t think that subplot really fit in with the overall theme of the movie, it could have worked in another movie but not this one. Visually it is very stunning and the set design is amazing but it kinda drops the ball the longer it goes.
January 26th- Let’s Scare Jessica To Death (1971), directed by John D. Hancock
I loved this film, the homoeroticism is off the charts. There are some scenes that could have been cut but I’m not gonna be that hard on it because it’s from the ‘70s. I don’t have a lot to say about this one but the lead female characters and the depiction of mental illness are very interesting. I don’t have much to say but overall I really liked the visuals of the film, older horror films hit this aesthetic and visual sweet spot for me and I cannot explain why.
January 26th- Pig (2021), directed by Michael Sarnoski
This was not what I expected it to be and I genuinely loved that. This film does something similar to what Riders of Justice (2020) (another film I really love) does in terms of genre bending and subverting expectations. I’m actually not gonna go super in depth about this one because I want people to watch it. The characters are really interesting, the film is heartbreaking to me and I definitely am going to watch it again.
January 27th- Vivarium (2019), directed by Lorcan Finnegan
I was so disappointed by Vivarium it’s not even funny. Whenever I watch films I try to go into them without much background knowledge, maybe I read the letterboxd description but that’s about it. And man this film had my favorite horror concept at its core and just flopped so hard. The premise is really interesting- a couple trapped within a suburban neighborhood nightmare that they just can’t escape and I wish so badly that they just stuck with that as the concept instead of bringing in the ‘they have to raise a child to escape’. I wish the film was solely about their relationship crumbling and them losing their minds inside a house + neighborhood that won’t let them leave, the house never seems like an element of horror but instead just a setting and that is such a missed opportunity. The film had me absolutely hate two of the three main characters, I would have killed that child so early on and Jesse Eisenberg’s character is so fucking annoying and utterly useless to the plot, Imogen Poots really had to carry this entire film because the other two characters whole personalities were either empty, boring and/or infuriating. She carries it as well as one sole actor can alongside lackluster actors and a missed opportunity script.
January 27th- Death Becomes Her (1992), directed by Robert Zemeckis
Oh my god this film was so fun! For some reason going in I assumed the potion referenced in the film description was a love potion and not an immortality potion so I was kinda surprised at that reveal. I really like what the film is saying about aging and the view of women’s bodies who age, and the body horror was absolutely so fun, obviously my favorite part of the film. Overall it’s just a chaotic fun time.
January 28th- The Wicker Man (1973), directed by Robin Hardy
Not sure what to say about this one that people haven’t said but I loved it! Folk horror icon, also wow Midsommar really did take a little too much inspiration from this movie, imo. I had no idea it was a musical/had songs going in so I was very surprised when people started singing, and I feel like some of the scenes could have definitely been cut to save time but overall yeah I loved it! Just the fun vibe of burning a guy alive.

Canadian Houses : Residences
Key Contemporary Residential Architecture Developments in Canada, North America
post updated 3 October 2021
Houses in Canada
We’ve selected what we feel are the key examples of Canadian Houses. We aim to include buildings that are either of top quality or interesting, or ideally both.
We cover completed buildings, new building designs, architectural exhibitions and architecture competitions across Canada. The focus is on contemporary Canadian residences but information on traditional buildings is also welcome.
Canada Architecture Design – chronological list
We have 1 page of Canadian residential architecture selections with links to hundreds of individual project pages.
New Canadian Houses
Contemporary Canadian Residences – latest additions to this page, arranged chronologically:

Located near Scarborough Bluffs, the panoramic horizon of Lake Ontario, Out(side)In House offers a void that leads the inhabitants to see the inner horizon, suggesting life inits deeper meaning.
Sep 17, 2021 Kennebec Lakehouse, Arden, Ontario Design: Zerafa Studio Llc. photo : Tom Arban Kennebec Lakehouse in Ontario Kennebec Lakehouse is a year-round vacation home located on Kennebec Lake, a finger-lake in Arden Ontario. The 2.8 acre site is defined by its dramatic topography, sloping down from the roadway to Kennebec Lake from south to north.
Aug 5, 2021 Saltbox Passive House, Bromont, Québec Design: Atelier L’Abri photo : Raphaël Thibodeau Saltbox Passive House, Bromont The Saltbox Passive House is a primary residence designed for a family of four and built on the southern flank of Mont Gale in Bromont, in the Eastern Townships. The 3,100 sq. ft. single-family home, built on three levels, sits in a meadow at the edge of a wooded, protected area on a 2.5-acre lot.
23 Jul 2021 The Monocular, Chester Basin, Nova Scotia Design: RHAD Architects photo : Julian Parkinson Monocular House, Chester Basin The Monocular was designed to choreograph one’s experience of the dramatic waterfront site. Thus, it was treated as a Monocular, framing the view of the Basin beyond.
22 Jun 2021 Lake of Bays Cottage, Lambton Shores, Ontario Architecture: Altius Architecture photograph : Greg Van Riel Photography Lake of Bays Cottage, Muskoka, Ontario A longtime client of Altius, the owners of this residence started looking for a cottage home in 2007. After four years exploring Ontario cottage country, they purchased Lake of Bays Cottage from a colleague but immediately began to doubt their decision. However, this doubt quickly melted away after they had spent their first summer there.
8 Apr 2021 Black Point Residence, Black Point, Halifax, Nova Scotia Design: Peter Braithwaite Studio photograph : Yurii Suhov Black Point Residence, Halifax, Nova Scotia This expansive Black Point Residence was designed for a retired couple looking for a summer home where their extended family could all gather and spend time together. Located in the harsh climate of the Northumberland Strait in Black Point, Nova Scotia, the architectural design pushes the limit of maritime vernacular seaside fishing and boat sheds.
