Yet another Astarion dialogue dissection under the cut.

Given that Astarion’s actual romance kicks off well into Act 2, wherein he cops to having planned to seduce Tav over to his side for protection, I always wonder where and when he started to catch feelings. I think there are any number of moments, and he’s playing games with you so much in Act 1 that it’s difficult to tell. But he also telegraphs his lies, in a way.

Now that I’m getting to relive Act 1 Astarion with a lot more attention to detail (and the ability to clip audio and revisit it), this is one of the moments that sticks out to me. From a romancing Astarion angle, this could be an early instance where the tide begins to turn, however slight. He’s deadly serious during this conversation, and I think we all know after dealing with Cazador that Astarion isn’t really embellishing much here—if at all—in his description of the horrors he and the other spawn faced. You see them lose control of their bodies, you witness the brutality of the kennel, the fear in the eyes and voices of the servants, the cruel history that Vellioth begat to Cazador and how Cazador had lived by Vellioth’s every teaching.

He is genuinely warning Tav here. You don’t know much about Cazador at this point, but Astarion is living in constant terror. Will his master find him? Will his brothers and sisters emerge red-eyed from any given shadow? Will the tadpole’s grip suddenly wear off for no reason and he just disappears back into the kennel? He is living on pins and needles, a shocking nightmare that he is somehow covering up with goofy ass remarks and opaque motivations. He could say something a little more self serving, like Tav’s own “You keep me safe and I’ll do the same.” But he doesn’t even go there. He leans in, pinches his brow, drops his voice. He is truly trying to communicate to Tav that he’s in constant danger and he needs to take it very seriously.

“Thank you, but this isn’t about sympathy. It’s about knowing what we might be up against.”

We, meaning he’s already pegged Tav for the type who will help him if and when the time comes. Might not be shocking since you’re probably just a silly little git to him who won’t stop wasting time helping weaker people than yourself. But by now he’s also seen that you’re both willing and strong. Capable. He has a chance with you. A fighting chance. This is the fissure in Astarion’s resolve (as far as leading Tav on) and he probably doesn’t even know it yet.

“All I’m asking is that you keep your eyes open.”

Sure, if Tav is on high alert it benefits everyone, therefore benefitting Astarion. But it’s not like he’s handing this warning out to the others. He still barely knows them and doesn’t trust them. He knows they feel the same way about him, for the most part. But Tav doesn’t. At first that makes him an easy mark to Astarion, but trust is also a precursor, even a prerequisite, to love.
