If you miss the good old days when responding to a post online was seemingly much more likely to spark a thoughtful discussion instead of endless drama and mockery, I really think you'd enjoy Pillowfort.
Call-out posts are literally against the site's TOS, but other than that, I think there are multiple factors contributing to Pillowfort's comparatively chill atmosphere: some technical differences, the similarity to LiveJournal/Dreamwidth that drew in a lot of older users coming from those sites and bringing a pro-discussion attitude with them ... and of course, it has to be said, the fact that the userbase is still manageably small. 😅
I'm aware of the irony in making this post to attract more users to the site when that could theoretically change it for the worse, but that doesn't seem likely unless we get a huge influx. For now, more users would be very very welcome because many corners of the site are still too quiet.
So please, if you're more interested in discussing things for the fun of it and exchanging information than winning arguments and dunking on people for dubious internet clout, come to Pillowfort! If you want to be able to make individual posts visible to your mutuals only, come to Pillowfort! If you want a truly algorithm-free site, come to Pillowfort! If you're tired of capricious millionaires and billionaires deciding the fates of the sites you're on, come to Pillowfort!
It's got some bugs left to iron out, but development has been steady and reliable for many years now, just slow. They listen to what their users want and almost every update improves the site noticeably.
To sign up, you can either use an invite link from another user or put your email on the waitlist to receive a personal invite. It usually takes less than an hour. You can also pay $5 to get in immediately, but that is completely optional no matter what rumours you may have heard. :P
Links: Pillowfort Staff's official how-to guide, a very thorough user-made guide that includes tips on how to get the most out of the site, the official list of known bugs and planned/requested features (not always up to date, but it's a good place to check whether a feature you want is likely to be implemented in the future), my own blog as an example of what they can look like (if on mobile, tap the circular userinfo button in the top row for profile text and more), an example community.
Invite links under the Read More so I can edit the post to add new ones when they run out:

I love Tumblr because nothing matters here truly. There are no influencers. Having followers doesn’t mean anything. It’s just a site where people post their sporadic thoughts and rb pretty pictures. Anyone who thinks any of this matters is woefully missing the point

Beware: a new kind of Porn bot just dropped
Tumblr media
It was "sophisticated" enough to use my URL to address me, and it took over a real, but abandoned blog to send this to me.
It should go without saying, but I am gonna say it anyway just to be sure:

I cannot express enough that if your reaction, as a hobby artist, to not getting that many notes on your art is to say "maybe I should just stop doing art altogether" you need to stop posting art to tumblr
not necessarily forever, not even for long, but just stop putting your art on here and start doing it for you again, remember why you enjoyed doing art in the first place and stop relying on the attention of faceless people on the internet for your enjoyment of your hard work
believe me, I get it, nothing crushes the artistic soul quite like labouring for hours on a piece only for it to get like 10 notes, so you need to find your own source of joy in the act of creation and a lot of the time that means making art and not showing it to anybody

Bear with me because I am about to rant about something not blog related that's been grating on me ever since this blog gained more traction
USAmericans being Americancentric vs. Europeans every single time someone says something they don't like or don't agree with or is just coming from a place of different experiences than them assuming you MUST be a USAmerican coming from a place of Americancentrism: fight
For context, I do not live in the U.S., and do not base my posts off of experiences in the U.S., and as much as I find it annoying that sometimes USAmericans reply to my posts with assumptions that their experiences are universal, for example USAmericans replying to my post about closing the lid before you flush with "but public toilets don't have lids!" when they do in my country, I find it equally annoying if not even more annoying with how much Europeans assume that every time I post something they disagree with or is a different experience than them that I must be USAmerican and coming from a place of Americancentrism
For example when I made a post saying "use excuse me if you have to get into someone else's personal space" I had a bunch of British people replying to it something along the lines of "Are you Americans so uncivilized that you're not taught basic manners like this? Good thing us civilized Brits know to use excuse me!" when, again, I do not live in the U.S., the post was based on experiences I had here in my country and again, not in the U.S.
Or when I made a post just saying "don't be rude to people who got you a present you don't like" because I've had experiences here in my country of people sneering at and tossing aside presents they didn't live or even yelling at or scolding the gift giver just because it wasn't a color that they like, I did not say that you have to pretend to like it, just don't be rude and sneer at them or yell at the gift giver, but I still had a bunch of Germans replying something like "well you Americans may think you have to pretend to like gifts you don't actually like but us Germans believe in being honest!" (even though that's not even what I was saying) when again, I am not in the U.S., I have never said that I am in the U.S., this was based on experiences in my country which is not the U.S., but Europeans had to go and assume everyone who says something they don't fully like or agree with must be USAmerican.
And I know it's not just me, I've seen a lot of posts from people here on Tumblr in South American or Asia saying that Europeans are always assuming they're USAmerican and coming from a place of Americancentrism when they talk about their experiences in South American or Asia.
I saw a quote one time that was something like "USAmericans believe the entire world is the U.S. while Europeans believe the entire world is Europe + the U.S."
but the thing is that I DO live in Europe, my country is a small northern European country, but of course my experiences are going to be different than someone who is British or German or Swedish, but it's like people from those countries so often assume their experiences are universal to everyone in their country + the rest of Europe, so if a British person experiences being taught to use excuse me that MUST be universal to Europe, and that apparently nobody outside of Europe and the U.S. is on Tumblr, so if I experience being shoved by people who don't use excuse me (in my tiny northern European country) that MUST mean I live in the U.S. and MUST be USAmerican since their British experiences MUST be universal to everyone else on this website who isn't USAmerican

also in the face of people deleting their blogs, that's another reason why you guys are supposed to reblog stuff. if somebody deletes a post, your liked version will disappear, but the reblogs remain. i'm insane about preservation and archival, every single piece of art i have ever enjoyed is reblogged on my 450k+ posts main account so if the artists leave I still have their work. i even tag things (though just with the main fandom tag) so I have years and years worth of fanworks saved that the terrible general site search will never show you.
please reblog art. not just to support the artists who make it and share their efforts, but also so you have your own copy of their works saved for yourself, and the future users of this site.

Hi.
I'm going to break my very strict format for once because I need your help. For the past 9 years, the irl human behind this blog has been involved in the effort to save a museum from incompetent and money hungry executives.
The museum is filled with precious objects, telling the story of the history of technology, and how it relates to art and society.
Many of these are objects are large, but delicate and have been in place for over 30 years.
No one within the museum's community trusts the CEO, who was appointed by a hostile former government, and prefers renting out museum spaces for business functions over educating the public.
In a few days, the museum is set to close down for renovations. Yet none of the staff or volunteers have been given any clear details about these plans. All we know is displays which have inspired generations will be torn down, likely never to be restored.
We have a petition asking the new government to step in and stop the closure:
If you could sign this, you'd be doing the human behind this blog a massive favour.
