I just wanted to check - there are albino corns, right? I know there are Snows and Blizzard morphs. Snake Discovery did a corn snake hatching vid recently and seemed to think there were no albino corn snakes, so I was a little confused. (They also didn't know the difference between Tessera, Motley, and Stripe though so I think they are just generally uninformed)
Hey friend!
I think the source of confusion here is that the term "albino" is a colloquialism developed for humans that doesn't totally work for reptiles.
The root Latin word, albus, just means "white." The term albino was originally coined by Portuguese and Spanish colonizers (boooo!) to refer to the children of Black slaves who were born without melanin. It then went on to describe any animal without pigment, particularly the black pigment melanin, which resulted in white hair, pink skin, and pink or very light blue eyes.
As science marched on and we gained a better understanding of how genetics and pigment work, we came to realize that there are multiple pigments at play in most animals. Even humans, whose main pigment is melanin, have two different kinds of melanin which result in the rich diversity of skin tones across the human species! Albinism works as a descriptor for humans because we only have melanin, but it falls apart fast when we start applying it to other forms of life.
So in corn snakes there are three main pigments: melanin (black), erythrin (red), and xanthin (yellow).
An amelanistic, or Amel, corn snake is by definition an "albino" with no melanin and red eyes. But they look like this:
Tumblr media
That doesn't exactly look white...
If we're looking for white snakes to call albino, a Snow corn snake has amelanism and anerythrism in combination, but they still have yellow xanthin pigment. A Blizzard, on the other hand, is a combination of amelanism and a slightly different mutation called Charcoal that removes both erythrin and xanthin. By the original intent of the word, a Blizzard would probably be an "albino" but a Snow might not fit the bill. Or might, depending on who's deciding, since they technically lack melanin!
To bring up another example of pigment mutations, leucism is the absence of all pigment, not just melanin. This mutation is most commonly found in birds and reptiles. Leucism and albinism look similar, and the mutations do similar things from a "looking at animals on the outside" perspective, but they're genetically distinct from each other!
It falls into semantics and discourse, so I think the easiest way to go about it is to think of albinism as a blanket term to describe a range of genetic color morphs found in mammals, but not a scientific description of what's actually happening. We could probably skip using it to describe reptiles because even when it's technically applicable, it's not the whole story.
I'll end this by saying that YouTubers in general are entertainers, not educators, and I don't think I'd take anything any of them say seriously unless they're providing references. Snakes are a huge and diverse group of lifeforms, and even if one were to know every detail there is to know about one species, that knowledge may only tenuously apply to even a similar-looking species.
This is exactly why exotics veterinarians are expensive and why you should treat them very kindly and with a great deal of respect.

This is a document listing different snake breeds and their specific morphs that might have issues that could affect their quality of life. It is suggested not to buy these breeds as it encourages the sellers to breed more and keep the cycle going of health issues.
Corn snake
Bloodred- Immuno-compromised and weaker immune systems in corn snakes
Sunkissed- Neurological issues/ “Stargazing syndrome” (balance is uncoordinated along with moving in general and they always tilt their head up which very often leads them to just laying on their back)
Palmetto- Enlarged eyes can lead to more common eye infections and what is called “Bug eye syndrome” where their eyes are very enlarged as a birth defect and very prone to infections.
Caramel- Enlarged hearts and sudden death rate
Striped- Enlarged hearts and weakness
Lavender- In breeding lines it is more likely for lavenders to have kinked spines and not survive getting out of the egg. If one snake is proven to not have a kinked spine after birth, then it should have no other health issues.
Ball Pythons
Spider- Neurological Issues (head wobble/ “Wobble syndrome”) and very often starving to death because they cannot aim for their food right or vomit because their body will reject the food
IMPORTANT NOTE: A lot of spider morphs have been renamed and a lot go by the “Bee” morph name now or their spider genetics are masked by another trait they were bred with
Black head x spider morphs masks the spider in them, but the genes remain and make be passed to offspring or show signs later
Super spiders are lethal to the snake
Cinnamon- Neurological issues (Similar to Spider morphs)
Super cinnamons/Super Black pastels are prone to duckbill syndrome and spine kinking
Woma- Neurological issues (Head wobble)
Super Woma morphs can by the name “Pearl” which produces Neurological issues to the point of death
Champagne- Neurological issues (Head wobble)
Champagne x Super Woma produces even more severe neurological issues
Champagne x Spider is incredibly lethal
Super champagnes are lethal
Powerball- Neurological issues (Head wobble)
Spotnose- Neurological Issues (head wobble/ “Wobble syndrome”)
Champagne x spotnose makes Neurological Issues (head wobble/ “Wobble syndrome”)
Spotnose x spider makes Neurological Issues (head wobble/ “Wobble syndrome”)
Super Butters- Eye deformities and prone to eye infections
Super Sabels and Super Black pastels- Prone to duck billing (a jaw/face deformity that can cause breathing problems) and spine kinks
Deserts- producing infertile females and most snakes have reproductive issues
Caramel Albinos- severe kinking issues and fertility issues
Piedbals mixed with Super lesser Platinums or any morphs from BEL complex- small eyes and eye deformities
Bananas/Coral Glow- Sex chromosomes are sometimes messed up and this becomes an issues in breeding, but otherwise the snake should be fine on its own
Western/Plains Hognose
Pink Pastel Albino- Neurological issues and fertility issues
Boa constrictor
Super Motley-  Weak immune systems and won’t survive past their second birthday
Super jungle- Weak livers, infertility and most likely won’t survive to their second birthday.
Super Aztec-  Neurological Issues and balance issues
Blizzard- Lethal genes that kill them
Scoria- Neurological Issues (head wobble)
Super keywest- Will die within 2 years
Super Parsons- Will die within 2 years
RLT- Will die within 2 years
Fires- small eyes, thin and small scales
Onyx/Leopard- Prone to bursting bellies if overfed
Albino- weaker immune systems and poor genetics
Albino x Albino will often produce offspring with missing eyes and other deformities
Texas Rat Snake
Leucistic- enlarged eyes and “bug eye syndrome”
Honduran Milk Snake
Extreme hypo- enlarged hearts and sudden death
Carpet Pythons
Granite- Physical deformities
Jaguar- Neurological issues (head wobble)
Super Jaguar and ivory morphs are lethal

Ahhhh your snake looks so precious!! What type is he?? I don’t know a whole lot about snakes but like… he looks at least like a ball python lol. When I graduate college (in 3-ish years) I’m planning to get a snake too… except I’ll be getting a blizzard corn snake. I already have a name picked out too. Speaking of… what’s your snakes name? ✨😆
Thank you!! You’re right, he’s a ball python ^^ a piebald ball python to be specific
And that’s awesome! Blizzard corns are so prettyyy
I don’t have any personal experience with corn snakes but I’ve heard that they make great first time snakes! A few days ago I got to see some hatching out of their eggs and they were so cute ~
What name do you have picked out? :0

You’re welcome! And nice!! Also huh neat! I think that’s the kinda ball python a friend of mine irl had… idk for sure since I never asked. They look similar though. Also since you put it the tags I won’t mention the name you said here but… that’s so cute lol!! And also somehow fitting… if that makes sense?
IKR in my freshman year of high school I suddenly got obsessed with getting a pet snake and researched like crazy what ones would be good for a complete snake newbie like me and one of the things said corn snakes. So I looked into it more and found that blizzard corn snakes were the prettiest imo.
Honestly when I first laid eyes on a pic of a blizzard corn snake the name came to me… like I didn’t pick it out per se -ish. I just saw the pic, was momentarily stunned then had a thought of something like “IMMA NAME HIM ALMOND!!”. And that name has stuck since then… I can’t picture naming my future snake anything else now (as lame as that sounds LOL). Also neat x2… if you don’t mind me asking where’d you some hatch? (Plz ignore the fact I just wrote a ton in reply… I haven’t gotten to mention my boi Almond to anyone in a while and got excited lol)
Thank you haha it was supposed to be a place holder name until I got a feel for his personality but it stuck ahshsksk 🙃
Good on you for doing your research!! That makes me so happy to hear 😭 also good call on choosing a corn snake over a ball python LMAO I love my boys but I’m going to have grey hair before I hit 30 bc of them orz
Omfg Almond is such a cute name!! Especially for a snake bc people get so freaked out even when the motherfucker’s name is a nut ahsvhsjsksk
As for where I saw them hatch, I know the owner of the local reptile shop so she shows me the cool stuff they have cooking in the back sometimes :3
Also don’t even worry about rambling!! I fucking,,,love talking about snakes and reptiles in general so much
