So preoccupied was her mind that she found herself following his gentle guidance, allowing him room on the straw mat and settling in front of him without question. Xiao Hua felt dreadful but she wouldn't complain of their closeness. As far as she knew, her illness was her own, impossible to share- still, she sniffled, attempting to muffle her coughs in the sleeve of her robe.
While Xie Lian’s thoughts were calm and wondering, Xiao Hua’s own mind was a rushing current, each thought tumbling over the last as she tried to piece information together through her illness addled mind. She listened as he read from the paper, and finally, something clicked. Seated as she was, her expressions were hidden from his view, but the way her ears flickered, lowering, then lifting, hinted at the agitation stirring within. In those few moments, she displayed more energy than she had all morning.
Green ginger, morning dew, blood sorrel root, mocking deadnettle, sleeping blindweed--These were no ordinary ingredients. A mortal might find the list cryptic, but any Guardian knew these herbs, knew their essence. Yet her confusion did not lie with the recipe itself, it was with the one who had given it to them. Ordinary mortals wouldn't know of such a remedy or these names, not unless they weren’t ordinary at all.
The brief moment when the woman had turned back to offer a fleeting smile, in the space of two blinks, her dark eyes had shifted, flashing bright yellow with slit pupils before snapping back to their gentle brown. She’d vanished before any questions could be asked, as mischievous as her animal namesake. It all made sense now: the old woman’s sudden fondness for her over the past weeks, her uncanny timing, and her knowing gaze. She must have sensed Xiao Hua’s true nature from the beginning, her illusion lost on a fellow Guardian.
"Yes.." she murmured, her voice hoarse as she stifled a cough. Xiao Hua’s stomach turned with a mix of excitement and unease. She continued with gentle seriousness, "but that woman... she was a fox."
Even though the woman was not actively scolding him, there was still a tone of displeasure in her voice that made Xie Lian feel rather embarrassed. He really liked their little home that was Puqi shrine, even though most of the time it seemed to be on the verge of collapse, but he had been a scrap collector for almost 800 years, he was used to accommodations that were way worse than this, he would clearly consider their shrine a luxury. At this point he had to be honest with himself though and admit that the woman was right, in this condition Puqi shrine was not suitable to spend a winter in, plus, he had a guardian living with him now, while he was used to living under uncomfortable circumstances it would not be fair to force Xiao Hua to spend the winter under the same conditions.
He took the little piece of paper and was just about to thank the old woman again when she shuffled out of the door, leaving them just like this after appearing in their lives like a true savior.
“Hmm”, Xie Lian hummed quietly to himself and then handed the paper to Xiao Hua, waiting for her judgement on the ingredients, but when she asked him to read the words out loud he realized that he did not yet have the time to teach her how to read.
“Once winter comes and there won’t be much for us to do, I am going to sit you down to teach you how to read. I am teaching San Lang how to write properly, I wouldn’t mind teaching you as well.”
But they could discuss that matter further later, for now it was more important to get Xiao Hua to recover.
“Move over a little?”, the cultivator asked and once the guardian moved to the side as much as her blanket nest allowed, Xie Lian sat down on the straw mat, then he pulled Xiao Hua onto his lap, holding out the recipe for her to see as he pointed at the different words.
“So, it says for this soup we need green ginger and mountain dew, but also..”
Xie Lian read the list of ingredients and instructions to the guardian that was now settled in his lap, and as he read he also started playing with her hair, wrapping a long strand around his finger.
“Does any of this sound familiar to you? The woman had looked at you as if she expected you to know.”
While he waited for a response, he couldn’t help but worry about the condition of their little shrine. He would need to find a way to renovate the shrine soon, otherwise he would have to insist on Xiao Hua returning to the Heavenly Capital to spend the winter in the warmth of her palace.
#divinityshackled#divinityshackled | 04#;; verse ; tgcf#lookit that im trying to plot twist#also xiao hua would be like 'boy i would rather sleep under the tree outside than go winter in the heavenly capital.'

after years of getting random intense urges to design the cast of firebringer and draw up scenes from the book i’m finally getting around to it, starting with color palettes. the first six are the main cast, two after are the main character’s bio parents, then the four does are the first four guys’ moms, and finally the two villains and a nice old dude who dies on page two. i forgot the old doe who’s really chill and i love her, but otherwise this is the main red deer cast.
ranach i pictured his father (brechin) being the gold star standard for a red deer, with a very deep red coat and high contrast, like a real stunner. ranach resembles him, and is certainly handsome, but he’s darker, more ruddy, and has that real bold white on his forehead. i wanted his brow to be darker so the leaf would stand out more, and i just like the idea of giving him a more furrowed, concerned look, even though he’s a bit of a bimbo.
thistle i always thought of thistle being high contrast and sharp, so he’s more tawny than red with a real good dorsal stripe. thistles’ one of my favorite characters so it was hard not to just make a really sick design and have him look like a protagonist.
bankfoot the thing that stands out about bankfoot is that he’s a little chubby as far as deer go, however i picture him kind of one step behind sort, that you don’t really notice most of the time, so i made him a bit more muddled and less noticeable next to ranoch.
tain i feel as tain would be a real gentle looking sort, not as harsh or vibrant as the others, but not entirely dull either.
willow and peppa bright and vibrant, i associate them with being very gingery because of peppa = pepper, although i guess willow might suggest something a bit more subdued. they’re identical twins except peppa has dark tips to her ears.
eloin she’s described as being very delicate and slender, but i liked the idea that she was very distinctive and easy to spot in a crowd, and i saw a picture of a very dark doe that i liked, so that’s that.
brechin he’s a chad, what can i say.
mom squad i tried to make all of the does look related but distinct from their fawns, bracken i always pictured like a dense underbrush, so she’s pretty dark, and can easily pass for ranoch’s mother.
sgorr i think i remember him being described as darker in coloration? idk, i wanted his pearly whites to stand out.
blindweed he’s just fucking old as dirt, super desaturated, i don’t know if deer really grey, but he sure has. like a living ghost, although not living for very long.
drail he’s pretty old, but nowhere near blindweed’s age, so not quite as greyed out, although he’s looking pretty shabby next to brechin, that’s why he had to go.

Riverbed Nightmare Pathfinder
It’s the find of a lifetime. A dried out riverbed, full of pre-colonial relics, untouched since it bore witness to a brutal battle sometime in the twelfth century. A team of Miskatonic University researchers are dispatched to Clayton River at once, and by July 10th, 1927, work is underway. Then the first people go missing. Riverbed Nightmare Quest During one of the night’s rests, the main character will have a nightmare with a noisy river. You should find the location called Nettle’s Crossing, which is located on the right of Old Sycamore. Head for this location, then go to the top right corner and talk to a ghost. Sep 30, 2018 Getting drawn into this stalemate starts the quest “Riverbed Nightmare”. If you pick the Neutral option you’ll just watch as both sides butcher each other, and Jaethal will show she’s a poor gambler, as the Nixie does not, in fact, have a better chance of winning.
These farming guides are designed to help you gather materials you may need for your chosen professions. All of these guides are up to date with patch 9.0.2

19. kisses meant to distract the other person from whatever they were intently doing - VOL'JIN/AMITA
“kisses meant to distract the other person from whatever they were intently doing”Vol’jin x Amita
(One of Two. Kat sent me this for Volita too haha!!)
It was a quiet evening at Rath’s bar. Amita had turned in early, setting her eyes on the new desk Hakto had built for her.
Sturdy, drawers on both sides, and built in holders for her pens, inks, papers, and books. She ran her fingers over the top, admiring it, ‘Hakto always be such a great carpenter. I be so fortunate that he be considerin’ me family.’
Amita reached toward her books, plucking the thickest one from the group. It was well read, and despite being considered an expert in the field, Amita spent most of her nights pouring over potions: over ones she’d made, ones she’d learned, and ones that were in this book.
She flipped to one of the middle dog-eared pages. Several bits of notes were there, and she pulled them out one by one, re-reading the contents. This potion was one that, when shaken rigorously, would glow. Amita was currently experimenting with different herbal combinations trying to improve upon the longevity - either that, or increasing the number of times one could shake the potion before the glow would no longer be of use.
‘So far I be makin’ it to three shakes, the first lasting three hours, second one and a half, and the last a measly ten minutes. I don’t be knowin’ why the drop in time be so large between the first and second shakes…’
“I wonder what would be happenin’ if I added silverleaf… hmm. More glow cap don’t be doin’ too much for it, really, but– oh! Maybe lichen?” Amita continued muttering to herself as she grasped one of the many leather books Vol’jin had bound for her. She thumbbed through the pages, brows furrowed. This one in particular she had attached a small charm she’d made: little decorative potion bottles attached to golden chains to indicate it was one of her potion books.
Of course, she had a pressed flower bookmark stuck to mark where she had left off.
“Hrm…” she slid into her seat, muttering to herself. Lichen might be her best option, as she already had silverleaf scribbled out on her notes part of the page. She supposed other mosses could be considered too, and then there was the off chance she could get a sample of bioluminescent algae; Ratchet sometimes had the phenomena occur on its shores, but she’d seen it happen frequently in the more tropical Booty Bay.
Amita was so consumed by her wonderings that she was unaware of a knock at her door, and was further unaware that the person had let themselves in.
She stiffened when their shadow fell over her, then huffed. That hairstyle was one she recognized.
“I be busy, Vol’jin,” she muttered, not looking up. The shadow crossed his arms.
“Uh huh.”
“I be serious!” Amita insisted, glancing over her shoulder at him, “dere only be so much of my day left… I gotta’ figure out how ta be makin’ dis potion work, at least a lil’ longah den it be workin’ now.”
“Ya be runnin’ errands fah Rath all day,” his tone was disgruntled. Amita blinked at her page, lifting her pen just enough to avoid forming an ink blot.
‘Do he… do he be complaining?’
“You be complainin’, sunshine?” she quipped, snorting out a laugh. The chieftain said nothing, choosing instead to continue standing over her. His gaze was heavy, and Amita grew tense beneath his scrutiny.
She continued to work on her thoughts, quill scratching over the page. Grave moss? Sungrass? Feather brushed against her lip as she narrowed her eyes in thought.
“I suppose… firebloom? No…” Amita muttered aloud, slipping into Zandali and forgetting that she had company, “their fire be burnin’ out too fast. I wonder if blindweed or dreamfoil would be helpin’…”
Amita jolted when Vol’jin’s hands gripped her shoulders. He moved his hands deliberately up her neck, then back down, pressing the pads of his fingers into her muscles. A soft sigh escaped Amita - and she tried to shrug Vol’jin’s hands off.
“Vol’jin, I be tryna’ work— mmm…” her head dropped forward as Vol’jin’s hands found their way into her thick locks; what he could grasp of them, given Amita had her hair pulled up in a tight ponytail. He pressed his fingers into her scalp, massaging her skin, and she leaned forward further, eyes closed.
Until she snapped herself back out of it enough to put her quill pen down. Amita reached up to grab his hands but Vol’jin swiftly moved them back down to her shoulders, then to her biceps.
“Vol’jin!” Amita hissed, though a keen hum followed her attempt to chastise him too swiftly, “I be– I be workin’!”
“Mmhm,” Vol’jin hummed, his lips pressing against the top of her head. His kisses trailed down to her neck, and she was trapped between his tusks. Every little ministration was demanding; every touch whined “give me attention”.
‘Oh Loa,’ Amita tried to escape him, wrapping one hand loosely around one of his tusks. The growl that rumbled long and low in his chest emphasized: “I want your attention”.
She ran her fingers along the length of the ivory despite herself.
Still, Amita was determined to do her work, and she stretched forward for the quill. Vol’jin easily reached over her shoulder, sliding his hand under the cover of her book, and in one swift motion, he flipped it shut. Amita whined, “Vol’jin, by Gonk, let me work!”
“I be having some work for you,” Vol’jin purred, his fingers trailing off the book cover. Heat flooded Amita’s face; it pooled in her belly, and she pressed her legs together tightly - anything to try and stave off how aroused that sentence made her feel. His hands moved to her waist, and he tugged Amita to a standing position. One of his feet nudged her chair to the side - she was surprised Vol’jin hadn’t resorted to kicking it - and he cornered her against the desk, tongue at her teeth.
“Fine,” Amita mumbled between kisses, gripping his hair tightly between her fingers, “you win.”
Vol’jin’s smile burned joy onto her lips.

After six days, the bulbs have grown darker and begun to expand, yet the petals remain firmly closed. Has the growth rate been affected by its contact with Blindweed, or it is simply the climate?
A soft, inquiring chirp draws her attention. Nimsa lounges nearby, tongue out and eyes half closed. Boring claw-scratching. Play now? the manasaber asks, yawning.
Neyleth drops the pen on her notebook and lifts a shoulder. “I suppose. My research appears to be getting nowhere,” she answers aloud. Gathering up her supplies, she throws them haphazardly in her bag and stops to glare at the plant. Trying to grow poisoned thorns is apparently harder than it seems.
She walks over to Nimsa and strokes the cat’s head. Time to play, she announces.

To clarify, there are different types morning glory, only some of which are native. This is why I said do research first. Field blindweed (often called morning glory, and what I think most people are talking about when they say morning glory) for example is a highly invasive noxious plant that will cover and kill just about anything. So again, before planting a veriety of morning glory, be carful, and do research. Know what you are planting, where it is native, and how it will interact with its environment.
Kind of sucks that i am not living in an ivy-covered cottage in the pacific northwest, drinking mint tea with honey,, riding my bike into town for the groceries and spending my day writing novels on a mossy tree stump with a cool breeze making the pine needles go sssssshhhhhh,,,,,,,

Khadgar’s Whisker
A potent, hops-like herb of Dwarven origin, revealing its properties when fermented.
Colloquial Names: Khgar Boldar, Wizard’s Brew, Wildbrew
Physical Description: Khadgar’s Whisker grows now primarily in the Plaguelands near leylines, but originally grew most plentifully in the Hinterlands. It is thought that migratory flights of cardinals carried the herb across the narrow mountain range separating the two. It is a rather interesting plant, grass-like, with many scrubby leaves climbing upon clustered olive green shoots. At the end of each mature shoot is a conical, hops-like flower with many pale green, papery leaves overlapping. The herb was long used by humanity in simple poultices, mashing it and adding a small amount of water before being applied directly to wounds. It was not until Dwarven traders from the south came into contact with simple village healers utilizing the herb that the Dwarves discovered the herb, and quickly unlocked a potential humanity had not realized. Humans used this plant for simple medicines and alcohol distillation, but what was a strong brew to humans was merely a water-like beverage to the Dwarves. It is thought that it was used as a weaker potion of night vision by the Wildhammer, having virtually no effect in terms of intoxication on their kind. Its uses were further expanded during wartime in the Plaguelands, using the ancient Dwarvish recipes of distillation. The unexpected potential of the unassuming plant earned it the dwarven name Khgar Boldar, Arcane Secret in Dwarven. It is also commonly argued that “Khadgar” was the original plant’s title, meaning a trusting or trusted thing - in this case, a reliable plant. Due to its habit of growing across leylines, affinity for potions of the arcane, and the inability for the human tongue to contort to words Dwarven in nature, this name was eventually mistranslated into “Khadgar’s Whisker”, after the Archmage. It is thought that the alcohol “whiskey” arrived at its name due to a distillation of this plant, “trusted water”, “secret water”, or “water of life” in the Dwarven tongue.
Described Usage: The polutice of Khadgar’s Whisker and water can still be used on wounds for increased healing and as an antibacterial. In more advanced distillations, the brewing process for most potions of Khadgar’s Whisker is… interesting. Usually, the herb is mashed with other reagents and warm water, then left to ferment for days or even weeks. This is why, when mixed with Fadeleaf, those without an extreme alcohol tolerance experience an acute lack of perception afterwards in trade for the potion’s properties of stealth detection. Traditional Khgar brewing uses yeast for fermentation, but where such things are scarcely found, such as in the Plaguelands, the spores of the common toadstool have been substituted. Usually, large batches of these potions are made in wooden casks and imbibed enjoyably as one would a malt beverage. Not all brews have the side effect of dulling motor function. In fact, most do not; some simply retain the taste and warming sensation. True to its inherited name, Khadgar’s Whisker can be combined with crushed herbs for effects of the arcane. For magical restoration, Goldthorn dust can be added, for wisdom and clarity, Blindweed in whole, and for healing, the leaves of Sungrass. The one reagent that should not be fermented with this herb is the leaf of Dragonsteeth- the reaction that occurs is quite unpleasant. I urge you to simply take my word on this.
