Your Rain
Dancing alone again Again, the rain falling Only the scent of you remains to dance with me Nobody showed me how to return the love you give to me Mom never holds me Dad loves a stranger more than me I never wanted to ever bring you down All that I need are some simple loving words You touched my body once It burns me still softly Never forgets never again will be I cry Out of my head and I don't know what I found Over and over I feel it break me down
Thanks to Rhive on Discord to help on this chapter.

Astarion stared at the girl standing before him, trying to work out what was running through her mind. She looked so confused and he could see a million emotions churning inside her, written on her face. He tried to think. He did not want to scare her more than she already was. He paused for a second, looking down at her.
He had an idea, he had seen humans doing this all the time, but it seemed awkward to him and he did not understand why they did it. They seemed to enjoy it and find it comforting so maybe this girl would too. He took a step slowly towards her, placing his arms awkwardly around her shoulders and gently embracing her, not pulling her too close to him, but keeping her at a distance to not make her uncomfortable.
Nessâ cheeks flustered red and still feeling confused.Â
Especially since she was in a relationship that made her touch starved, Ken wouldnât dare wrap his arms around her. Even with a familyâs hug, her illness made it painful. Like she didnât deserve the company of her own family. She knew the twisted vines of her scarlett mental illness made her doubt the affection given to her. Yet it didnât arrive while being in the arms of a powerful vampire lord right now.
Hence the flustered red cheeks. Her mind was at ease when the vampire held her. The scent of bergamot and brandy from him made her feel calm.
The hug made her feel like she was dreaming. As a vampiric fan girl, this was the best thing that could happen to her.
A powerful vampire accepts her for who she is. Not for being a juice box.
With her flustered cheeks, she looked up to the vampire ascendant.
âThank you,â Ness said to him.
He looked at her with a playful smirk.
âDarling,â he replied, âyou are the most unique human I ever encountered. Never let anyone think youâre less than that.â
The Vampire Ascendant had been around for centuries. Never had he noticed a human that took care of him in his most vulnerable state. He could hear her blood just asking for a taste.
He had his fill by biting that bastard Ken. Plus, he knew how fragile this human was from reading her journal. Years of being in a toxic relationship and having the bravery to end it on her own means, Nessa was finally getting better.
So it might not be a good idea. Yet.
The skies were starting to have pouring rain. Ness was feeling calm in the arms of said vampire ascendant.
So what is going to happen now?
âYou know a lot about me,â Ness started as she looked at the vampire, âI do feel mad that you read my journal. But I guess it was a trade off when I allowed a cute fluffy white bat in my apartment.â
âDarling,â he said, âdonât be so modest. I find you tend to unleash your feelings with mere words on paper rather than in person.â
âIâm sorry. I mean, I didnât want those hunters to harm you. And maybe I was foolish thinking a vampire like you would at least do the job Ken wanted with me.â
âDarling, donât think like that. Youâre better than that pathetic master.â
âYeah.â Her cheeks were still red as she pressed her head near her chest and her tears were running down her eyes.
She needed a vampire to ease her problems.
****
The vampire hunters were feeling moody, especially their leader.
That human who refused them to see her apartment will end up as another bloodless victim to said vampire.
Damn women authors that write vampires as romantic interests who protect their delicious juice box.
That woman will die. Like she didnât care sheâs having a monster in her place.
He failed her. He hated feeling guilty for allowing that vampire to thrive. His ancestors will never be proud of him.
That vampire was mocking him, living in a lavish palace that belonged to Cazador Szaar. Whatever that vampire did, he did not deserve freedom. He did not deserve protection.
That woman was very stupid to refuse their help. Didnât care about her own life. They should have done something.
All they can do is watch her die for her incredible stupid mistake.Â
****
Astarion looks at the woman as tears run down her face. He reaches out and tenderly wipes her cheek, wiping the tears away. She looks up at him, her brow furrowed. "What is it darling?â He said gently, "you look like you have something on your mind."
Ness sniffs as she tries to stop her tears.
"I..don't know,â Nessa began as she looked at him, âI thought I knew about vampires, but you. You arenât like the ones I have read about.â
Astarion chuckles to himself. Human fables about vampires are so imaginative and so inaccurate. He has read so many since arriving here and does not recognise most of the things they say about his kind.
"Darling, what would you like to know about vampires?" He asks her, finding her willingness to admit her feelings to him, and her curiosity endearing.
Ness thinks about this for a few moments before answering.Â
"I don't even know your name" she starts sobbing again, "I am standing in your arms and I don't even know your name. How pathetic am I?"
Astarion is unsure how to react to this, and hesitantly puts his hand on her hair, as if to soothe her.
"That is entirely my fault darling, how rude of me not to introduce myself. My name is Astarion.â
Flustered. She liked that name. It fits his sophisticated nature. He is quite a unique character, vampire or not.
She is glad the hunters did not get to him. Itâll be sad if she left him to die. Humans can be cruel to others that are not like them. Such turmoil that humans treat each other.
Still, his bat form was cute. She didnât mind his grayish curls and his crimson red eyes. From having Ken as a boyfriend, a vampire lord was a great improvement. She felt more secure from a vampire than she did with Ken.

Hey guuuuuys
As a heads up, I'm going to be converting this blog to be mostly my main/pokemon blog. I've been thinking about it for a while tbh and when it comes down to it, I've been feeling a huge disconnect from selfshipping as a whole for a while. It was nice and a great way for me to cope before I was able to get mental health care, but it's definitely more of a hobby now more than anything. Don't get me wrong, I still love my funky little gals and guys and it's fun to think about them in different scenarios! I'm still going to always lose my shit over Piers! But honestly? All of my "inserts" have basically come into their own, if that makes sense. They are not me. They may share a name with me sometimes but that's definitely an OC, that and I'm too lazy to rename the various Mandas and Jeannes across franchises cause that shit is a lot of work. And besides, literally everyone who has made a character has put some of themself into it and I know that I'm not wrong--
Now, what does this mean for me/the blog?
I'm still gonna post how I feel like posting. Things are going to be a lot less selfship focused. If anything, I'm leaning more on the side of oc x canon and oc x oc cause that's where I'm finding more enjoyment. No more fancy carrd with f/os and all that happy stuff, it's just going to be an about. No long ass dni honestly who the hell even takes the time to read them anymore (I mean, I do, but not the point I'm trying to make here). Granted my dni was never long in the first place but kgjwjdjejejjfayhs still. I'm still deciding if I'm going to go through the blogs I follow and trim things up. If I unfollow you, by no means is it anything against you and there are no hard feelings on my end. And if you'd like to unfollow me due to my focus shift, I encourage that.
Honestly over all, I haven't had a lot of energy to be publicly online in a while, anyway. It's what happens when you work full time, go to school part time, and have some mental disorders and a chronic illness that's been fucking you over since you were 2. The burnout is real lmao. I'd rather enjoy myself when I'm on tumblr than be all bleh, ya know?
I mean this when I say I did enjoy my time when I was selfship focused, but I think that part of my life is... Not quite behind me, but not a major part of my future anymore. In some aspects, it made my mental health worse, if I'm being honest, and I should have never let it get to that point. Granted that was before I was able to get diagnosed and start my mental health journey, but still. Should have stopped as soon as I felt myself not doing okay. I'm not going to dumb down or sugar coat myself anymore (granted I haven't been for a while but eh is what it is). I'm probably going to be leaving most servers I've been a part of and clean up my discord as well.
I'll still post self ship stuff here occasionally cause I mean, c'mon it's my blog I can do whatever the hell I want with it forever.
But I do think it's time to finally start finishing up this chapter. I'll forever and always be Amanda Pierswife though, you can pry this url from my cold, dead hands <3

SPARE PARTS: a series (19/20)
NEW YORK, NEW YORK
(W) strong language, implant-protected sex, a chapter thatâs probably gonna have u all screaming at me lolâŚ
THIRD PERSONâS POV
âOh, fuck, yes. Right there.â
âThere?â
âYeah, shit. Donât stop.â
âHittinâ your spot, huh?â Harry lifts Charlieâs leg higher, pressing a kiss to her ankle, not giving up on his merciless strokes in her cunt. âFeel good, baby?â
âFeels so good,â Charlie cries, eyes squeezed shut as her fingers grip the sheets, the pillows, him, anything till they blanch.
The headboard bangs against the wall till paint is practically flaking away, the pillows they placed there in an attempt to be kind to their neighbour (Liam) long gone. A quick one, he promised, when he showed up at her door all hot and bothered and needy.
âJust your mouth,â he had said. âThatâs all I need, please.â
Cut to the birds chirping outside and the sun slivering its way through the thick curtains and Charlie still writhing around his cock. Sweat shone on both of their tired bodies, round three showing in the bruises that already developed on her breasts and his hips and their necks.
But just they couldnât stop. Itâs like their bodies knew this was the last show of tour and soon they wouldnât have the ability to just wander down the hallway or step across the small bunk space. Soon, theyâd have to arrange time. Theyâd have to drive, or Uber, or walk.
Which, sure, is just a normal working relationship â but when youâve been within armsreach of each other for six months, it feels like you were preparing to be miles away.
âCome on, Char, I know you can give me another,â Harry pounds into her, thumb swiping over her sensitive clit, âjust one more, please, baby.â The sensitivity is so deliciously painful itâs nearly too much, but his words, that nickname, has her teetering over the edge.
She pulls him down just before coming for the nth time, wanting to feel him against her. Sticky chest against sticky chest, hands raking through his knotted hair, lips panting against one another. She wraps her legs around his hips, pushing him deeper and forcing him to hold his arms on either side of her, biceps aching in near agony at this point.
As she orgasms, pussy clenching around his throbbing dick, Harry comes too, moaning the loudest he has all night into her neck as his back muscles pulse with his hips. Sharp gasps fill the room as he collapses on top of her, unmoving while she softly scratches his spine, fingers running over the pre-existing red marks.
âFuck,â Harry breathes in a way that has Charlie considering round four. âThat was incredible, baby.â
Charlie grins, craning her neck to see his tired eyes through the hair sheâs working to finger-comb.
âYouâre a big fan of that one, huh?â
âBaby?â
âMm.â
He presses a lazy kiss to her shoulder before pushing himself up and pulling out, both of them wincing but feeling a smidge of relief. Maybe five plus orgasms is a little too much for one night.
âYou said you liked it.â Harry answers simply, chastely kissing her lips before heaving himself from the sweaty sheets. âWait here.â
âNot going anywhere.â Charlie jokes, stretching on the sheets, the promise of sleep already settling her into a heavy pile of bleh.
The duvet was long gone, thrown onto the floor in the midst of it all, and there was only one pillow left on the bed. While Harry steps into the bathroom, Charlie starts to recollect the bed, struggling with the ones that fell behind the headboard but managing with weak limbs and an exhausted huff.
Returning with boxers on and a damp cloth in hand, Harry sits at the edge of the bed and bends Charlieâs knees to clean her. She just watches him, half as a distraction from the sting of the cloth against her sensitive groin, but mostly in awe. He concentrates so hard on being gentle, itâs hard to remember a time when she was running from his room before he could even come back to bed.
âI love you.â
The words just slip out, much like Harryâs confession those weeks ago. Harry pauses everything, taking a minute before looking up at Charlie. Her heart is going a mile a minute, not having meant to say the words, but her exterior is completely calm.
(Probably a little fucked out, but calm nonetheless.)
âYou mean it?â He whispers. Charlie smiles, sitting up.
âI didnât even think about saying it,â she carefully straddles his lap, wrapping her arms around his neck.
Harry looks at her like she just gifted him the moon.
Charlie leans down, nudging the tip of her nose against his. His hands come to her hips, warm palms soothing sore muscles as he rubs them round to the small of her back.
âYou love me?â He asks again, seemingly in utter disbelief.
âI love you.â She repeats. He grins.
âYou what? Sorry, my hearingâs not great.â
Charlie rolls her eyes. âStill fucking insufferable.â
âIf thatâs the case I can justââ he goes to move her off him, but she grips his nape.
âI love you.â She blurts out, entirely too comfy to be shifted.
Harry grins even wider, cheeks aching already.
âYou love me.â He says, more to himself than anything.
Charlie feels slightly completely terrified, but she nods.
She loves him.
âYou did also just make me come like, a million times, which might have something to do with it.â She leans back, tilting her head, soft teasing smile on her lips.
âMhm,â Harry pushes her messy hair back, âyeah, that does make more sense.â
Charlie sucks her bottom lip into her mouth, really about ready to start round four with the way Harry looks at her. âAre you going to kiss me orââ
Charlie doesnât even have to finish that sentence before Harryâs lips are on hers, slow and firm, like heâs kissing her for both the first and last time. Like heâs savouring the taste of those words â those three, delicious words â from her tongue.
Charlie tries to grind on him, but instantly winces at the bolt of pain caused by the simple action. Harry chuckles against her mouth, pecking the corner of her lips.
âDid you just really try for another go around?â
Charlie shrugs, âIâm ambitious.â
Harry rolls his eyes playfully. âLater. Right now, we need to sleep.â
âShit, right. We have a show today,â Charlie remembers.
And not just any show. Madison fucking Square Garden.
âWhat time is it?â Charlie asks, climbing off of his lap. Harry stands to grab her some pyjamas, checking the time on his phone as he does.
Sheâs going to flip, he thinks.
âWe have a few hours.â
âHarry, what time is it?â She repeats, stepping into the cotton shorts and shirt he passes her. He then hesitantly shows her his phone, eliciting a gasp. A little dramatic, if you ask him.
â6AM? Harry, you came over at twelve! Okay, shit,â as Charlie enters panic mode, Harry crawls into bed, stealing one of her hair ties (unnoticeably). âI need to pee, and then we need to be at MSG for two, but Amelia wanted costume fittings at twelve, and then Paula wanted us to go overâ Harry, are you fucking kidding me right now?â
Harry, who was not fucking kidding her, was on his side of the bed, eyes closed and moments away from blissful sleep. He grumbled what he considered to be a response, opening his arms out on the mattress.
âHarry.â She snaps again, not wanting to be alone in her panic. Mostly because it was his fault sheâd have, like, an hour of recharge-time.
âJusâ go pee,â Harry mumbles, sleep already dangerously close, âthen come to bed. They canât do it without us, anyway.â His sentence trails into nothingness, and as much as Charlie hates to admit it, her chest leaps a little at the way his swollen lips fall into a snore the moment silence falls onto the room.
âI like waking up next to you.â
Harry kisses sweetly beneath her ear, large hands roaming the warm skin beneath her shirt. Charlie hums something that was supposed to be agreement, reaching behind her to cup the back of his neck. The room is still dark, and for a moment, she had completely forgotten where they were. It was just Harry, and his lips marking her neck in lazy, chaste pecks.
âShit!â
Like I said, momentarily.
âShit, Harry, what time is it?â
Charlie shoots out of bed, stumbling on the hotel slippers by the bed in a scrambled effort to find her phone. He sits up, entirely too casual about the whole thing, yawning and stretching before even bothering to look at the time.
âTwelve.â He sinks back into the mattress, pulling the sheets to his neck.
The sheets which Charlie promptly strips away.
âWhich means weâre late,â she brushes away Harryâs protests and effort to steal the sheets back for rushing to the bathroom to brush her teeth. âAmeliaâs gonna kill us.â Charlie mumbles, messily tying her hair up before shoving entirely too much toothpaste into her mouth.
âCharlie, baby,â Harry slowly pads out of bed, stretching as he makes his way behind her in the ensuite, âIâve been late to every single thing ever, and Iâm fine,â he ignores the glare she shoots him in the mirror, bending down to kiss her jaw.
âGo back to your room,â Charlie muffles around her toothbrush, spitting the paste into the sink before continuing her scolding, âand clean up.â
âOkay, mum.â Harry tries to joke. Big mistake.
He holds his palms up, raising his brows.
âNot a morning person, I get it.â A small smirk etches its way onto his lips at the pure ferocity Charlieâs staring at him with. If looks could kill heâd be out cold, but unfortunuately for Charlie, itâs only turning him on. A little.
(A lot).
âSorry,â he mumbles against her skin, kissing her neck. Charlie sighs, falling back into his torso, letting him glide his lips along her throat, even letting him turn her around and attach their mouths â toothbrush still in her hand.
But, no. Shit.
âMkay,â Charlie shoves him away, keeping him at arms reach. This man is way too easy to sink into. âNo. Go.â
âCan I at least pee first?â He grins, dipping his head to kiss her neck. Again.
âYes.â Charlie musters all the strength in the world to slink out of the cage heâd made around her and the basin, even taking her toothbrush with her into the main room. Harry tries not to laugh at her, or call her adorable. âBe quick.â She nods, twirling around so she doesnât have to look into the eyes of temptation again.
Harry chuckles as he closes the door, leaving Charlie to throw her toothbrush on the hotel desk and rummage for some sweats. She knew Amelia wouldnât actually kill them, but Charlie hates being late, and sheâs not going to start because of Mr. Tardy himself.
A loud shrill stops her in her tracks. Harryâs phone, buzzing like crazy on the bedside table. She goes to just turn it off so the ringing doesnât cause a migraine (who has their ringer that loud?) but in seeing the caller ID, panic starts to bubble.
âC Management.â
She doesnât know what the C is for, but she sure as Hell knows what management means. Her heart starts to race â itâll only be a matter of time before Paula tries calling, her, too and if thereâs anything Charlie hates more than being late, itâs being reprimanded by management.
Itâs only happened a handful of times (mostly from turning up to work still drunk because her friends are just that persuasive) but sheâs hated the feeling every time, so â despite knowing itâs probably wrong â she picks up the phone.
âPaula, weâre so sorry. Harryâs just in the bathroom but weâll be twoââ
âHello?â
Thatâs not Paula.
A deep voice comes from the other end, making Charlie pique. Itâs not a voice she recognises, but then again, she doesnât know every member of Spare Partsâ management. It could be anyone on their team.
âSorry, I just assumed you were Paula. We really will be two minutes though.â
âDid I get the right number? Is this Harry Styles?â
Charlie pauses. Right. Because who did she think she was, just answering Harryâs phone like that? Even if it was a member of a team that works for both of them, itâs an invasion of his privacy.
âNo, no this is Charlie. I just answered his phone.â
âCharlieâŚ?â
Is this the dudeâs first day on the job? â... Greene.â
âRight. Right, well can you let Mr. Styles know we rang?â
Charlie perches on the edge of the unmade bed, glancing at the caller ID again.
âSorry, Iâm just a little confused. Whoâs calling?â
âIâm a representative for Rob Stringer at Columbia Records. Mr. Stringer would like to speak to Harry, so if you could just ask him to call back as soon as possible that would be greatly appreciated Miss. Greene.â
Before Charlie could ask anymore questions, the line cut dead.
Rob Stringer? Columbia Records?
None of this was making sense. The band was signed with a completely different label, Charlie had only ever heard of Rob Stringer through articles and conversations sheâd had with other musicians in the industry. Why would he be calling Harry?
When Harry emerges from the bathroom, hair now loose and face looking a little brighter, his smile promptly drops at Charlie â sitting on the edge of the bed, the picture of confusion with his phone laying limp in her hands.
âChar?â He questions, snapping her out of her head.
She blinks a few times before standing, holding Harryâs phone up.
âWhy is Rob Stringer trying to get a hold of you?â
Her own phone started to ring now, probably someone wondering where the Hell they were, but the tune went unnoticed. Harryâs vision went pale.
âWhat?â He murmurs.
âSomeone from Columbia just rang,â Charlie throws his phone on the bed, âsaid Rob Stringer wants to talk to you. Seemed to have no idea who I am.â
Harry licks his lips, runs his hand through his hair. Charlie notices how shaky his wrist is. âHarry,â she softens, stepping forward, âwhatâs going on? You can talk to me.
âIâŚâ Harryâs throat dried so quickly anything more than that was painful.
âYou can talk to me,â Charlie repeats, reaching out to his elbow.
âLook, itâs not⌠I⌠fuck. I donât even know how to say it.â Harry pulls away, starting to pace the room. Charlie has no idea whatâs going on, but gauging Harryâs reaction is only making her more and more anxious.
âHarryââ
âI signed a contract.â He blurts out, wringing his hands together.
âYou⌠you signed what?â
âIt was months ago, Charlie, you have to understand it was a completely different time and Iââ
âHarry, you signed a contact to do what?â Charlie can probably guess at this point, but she needs to hear it from him. She prays sheâs jumping to conclusions, that itâs some weird prank, that sheâs still dreaming.
Harry hesitates, finding her eyes.
And, barely above a whisper, he explains.
âIâm leaving the band, Charlie.â
Charlie gulps. Inhaling sharply as her palms fly to her hips. She turns, begins to pace as Harry did. Heâs leaving the band? Heâs leaving the band. Heâs⌠heâs leaving?
âBabyââ
âNo.â Charlie promptly cuts him off. She needs silence for a minute.
But silence isnât getting her anywhere. Itâs not answering any of the one million questions boomeranging around her head, itâs just making everything louder. Why would he leave the band? When did he sign the contact? Why would he lie?
âCan I explain, please?â
Harryâs a bundle of desperation, his chest rising and falling in quick bursts of panic.
Charlie contemplates it. She could either ignore him completely, or get answers.
Neither sounds fun, but she knows whatâs right.
âSpeak.â She spits, the hazy warmth of their morning together chilling.
âMonths ago, before the album even came out, they approached me. I never even considered leaving, and at first I flat out refused, but then⌠I donât know. I realised I wasnât writing what I wanted to write because I had to run it past four other people first, and that whilst I love the band, I canât stay in one place because of fucking friendship.â
âFriendship? Jesus, Harry, itâs more than that. Weâre⌠weâve all⌠we did this together. From the start. You canât just leave.â
Denial.
âI know, but I didnât know until they offered me a solo contract how much Iâd want that. Complete creative freedom, performing where I want how I want, being able to control when I want to put music out. Itâs all justâŚâ
âBetter?â Charlie finishes his sentence. Harry winces at her bitterness.
But she wasnât wrong.
âWait,â Charlie pinches her brows, âbefore the album came out?â
Harry swallows thickly, and nods.
âYouâŚâ Charlie breathes out in disbelief. âYou had this lined up last year? You knew⌠you knew you were about to fuck us over and youâve kept to yourself for a year?â
âIâm not fucking you overââ
âOf course you are! How are we supposed to do this without you?â
Anger.
âWhat are you talking about? Youâre more than capable without me, I barely even contributed to this albumââ
âThey love you, Harry. I see them when weâre on stage. They watch you, they donât give a shit about us. If you leave, you take them with you. You realise that, right?â
âThatâs not true.â
Charlie paces again. âGod, this whole time. This whole tour! What was the plan? To tour the world with us for half a year then just fuck off? Were you even planning on telling us?â
âYes, Jesus, I just⌠things got complicated. It got harder and harder to say it.â
âYou made things complicated. Youâ oh my God. You made me love you, Harry. Do you know how fucking sick and twisted that is? What did you think was going to happen? You were going to leave and we were going to just have a normal relationship?â
âI donât know! I signed the contract while you still hated my fucking guts, Charlie. I didnât think youâd give a shit.â
âOf course Iâd give a shit! We need you, I need you.â
âYou didnât need meââ
âIâve always needed you. And you just⌠God. You just donât think!â
âI know! I know, and Iâm sorry, and I can never stop being sorry but I couldnât do this forever. I couldnât sing songs I donât like, I couldnât put out music I didnât even write, and I couldnât sit back and watch you hate me. Leaving felt like my only option.â
âAnd now?â
Heaving breaths from the first screaming match theyâve had in months fills the space between them. Harryâs eyes are brimming with tears that refuse to fall, whilst Charlie fights against that lump in her throat. She canât cry here, in front of him.
âIâm still leaving, Charlie.â
The lump wins.
âYou could have told me.â
âI couldnât have.â Harry whispers, tears betraying him, too.
âWhy not? Youâre supposed to love me, youâre not supposed to lie to me.â
âYou would have left me, Charlie.â
Charlie sniffs, pressing the heel of her palm to her eyes. All Harry wants to do is step forward and wipe her tears, to hold her in his arms and make it all go away.
âWhy are you leaving?â Charlie sobs.
âI told youââ
âI love you now. You donât have to sit and watch me hate you anymore. A-and we can talk to Paula, get you more fuckinâ creative freedom. We can play different shows, yâknow. Different venues.â
Bargaining.
âCharlie,â Harry steps forward, gingerly bringing his hands to her arms, âI canât stay. I wish I could have gone about it differently, but I donât regret signing that contract.â
The way Charlie looks at him like he just ripped out her heart is making him regret it, just a tiny bit.
âAt all?â
Harry sniffs, and shakes his head.
âFine.â Charlie looks down, stepping out of his touch. âNot a problem.â
Acceptance.
âCharlie?â
âIâd like you to get out of my room, please.â
âCharlieââ
âGet out of my room.â
âCharlie pleaseââ
âIâm not repeating myself for a third fucking time,â Charlie sets her jaw.
Harry listens. And he leaves.

I'm so far down the procrastination hole that I've opened my dreamwidth from *squints* 2021? I think? to dust it off and tweak the layout an stuff.
that's how dire things are rn :'D
[running hands down my face] I've already mentioned to some friends today that whatever shape my chapter is in by the end of, like, business hours, then that's what my advisor's getting, bc he said I could send it in "messy" so long as I sent something
but ugh. I do this every time. I put it off bc it's either Not Now or Right Now with my brain wiring, and then when I do finally work on it I just feel bad about how much work I should have done with all the time that's passed between now and then, and then I hang onto it forever bc it just Needs to Be Better so people don't think I'm lazy, and, and, and--
bleh. I'm just going to have to be cool about this one. he's just going to have to be cool about this one, bc I start my new job in less than two weeks, the semester isn't even officially over yet, and I just want a break since I'm not going to be on a bi-semester schedule anymore.
and like, he's a cool guy. he will be cool about it, I'm 90% sure, so long as I show him I have ideas and plans to move forward. he's a very sweet dude who's been very supportive and has been cool with me explaining 'sir I have a creative background, I've made a huge mistake and I'm just trying to get out of here,' and as far as academic advisors go, he's swell. I could definitely have a lot worse.
I just hate that this whole process is so teeth-gritting, bc I know I signed up for it, and I know everyone will be v disappointed in me if I don't finish my diss, but at the end of the day --
I hate this part, I hate writing academically, and I don't really know how to get around it lmao
anyway, this should be the last complain-y post I make about this this week, thank you to everyone who's humored me and been very sweet so far. it means a lot <3

Hi Muffinlance! I was wondering if you ever feel discouraged to write or if you just donât feel like it, and what you do to keep motivated?
Feeling discouraged/not wanting to write is normal. As I write, I try different things, and keep mental notes of what raises my overall productivity.
Current things that help:
Writing in the morning, I am so much more productive, it is not even funny
Leaving my phone in another room. My laziness to walk over and get it does wonders to stop my impulsive internet-checking.
Working on multiple projects, and having them at multiple stages. That way when one is hard and I don't wanna, I can avoid-my-homework by switching to another.
Scaffolding my writing process. Those of you from any kind of teaching background have probably heard of scaffolding. For those unfamiliar: it's making sure tasks are broken up and presented in ways that help students succeed. Do I treat myself like a middle schooler who doesn't want to do a long project? ABSOLUTELY. For me, the stages of writing are outlining (a rough ordering of chapter events), skeletoning (dialogue and stage directions with so little regard for grammar, just none of the grammar, punctuation also is laughable), "real" writing, where I turn it into something that won't burn the eyes of mortals, and an editing/polishing run. I generally do each stage on a separate day, with think time for tweaks in-between, and once I've done one step the next isn't so hard. Definitely not as hard as going from the dread Black Page to a fully-fleshed-out chapter, which is the way I used to write, which is why my writing used to need a ton of structural edits that were painful to do. Believe-you-me it is MUCH easier to find and fix errors at the outline or skeleton level.
Timing my energy levels/attention spans for those stages. Outlining and skeletoning take a lot of brain power: these are done on days when Spouse can wrangle kiddo on his own and I have a nice morning block to write in. Editing is super easy and saved for weekday nights when I have minimal time and spoons.
Giving myself think time/recharge time. I have recently started giving myself weekdays to just... not write. And have been wildly productive on the weekends. I am working on not feeling guilty during the week, because the initial results are pretty far in favor of "5 days off, 2 days on" actually working really well for where I'm currently at in my life. (I used to try for a daily write time of at least 45 minutes, but that isn't working well and hasn't been since Mini-Muffin entered the picture, so I switched things up.)
I also really really enjoy artificial external deadlines, so having Patrons who expect weekly postings has been an excellent my-paper-is-due-tomorrow motivator.
Experiment. Find what works for you. Revise as necessary.
And if you mean to make any kind of career of things, then take the idea of a muse/writer's block to your bathtub and drown it. If you want to do this as a job, show up and do your job. The writing you turn out while feeling bleh is going to be pretty much indistinguishable from what you make when riding an inspiration high. The important thing is getting it on the page consistently.

The Nanny Pt. 1
Lee Bodecker x Nanny!F!Reader
18+Â
Word Count: 3k
Warnings: mentions of alcohol, implied age gap (reader is in her 20s), cursing, Sandy and Carl being bad parents, 18+ content in later chaptersÂ
Summary:
Based on this Request: The reader moves to Meade/Knockemstiff while answering an advertisement for a nanny in the paper. We learn that the ad was posted by Sandy, who has the reader watch her child whenever she and Carl leave to do their secret thing. After one of these trips, Sandy and her husband never return, so the reader is left caring for their baby. With the new investigation into these events, she meets Sandyâs brother Lee, the older, out of shape, alcoholic bachelor, and they are suddenly thrown into each others lives as he begins looking into his sisterâs disappearance. Through it all, Lee starts to fall for her, and they slowly become a family.
A/N: Here is the first part of my newest series and I want to thank the anon who reached out to me with this idea!Â
If I missed anything I should include as a warning that I missed please let me know!
Taglist Form is in my bio and should be updated to now to include this fic! (If for some reason it isnât working send me a message and Iâll make sure youâre added!!)
âDamn it, Sandy, canât you handle that?â Carl yells from his dark room as the baby starts crying again.
âFuck you, Carl,â Sandy shouts back, hurrying to put out her cigarette before heading to the nursery.
Their little girl was just about a year old, and neither one of them knew what they were doing. Carl was incredibly indifferent and despite her honest attempts at motherhood, Sandyâs maternal instincts never kicked in like she thought it would happen. Carl was annoyed that it cut into their time they would be on trips. They werenât able to photograph models with the baby on the road, so heâd been itching to get back on the road.
âIs she hungry?â he shouts back, not even bothering to take his eyes off of the most recent photographs he had been developing.
âI just fed her!â
âThen why is she crying?â
âFuck if I know,â Sandy shouts back exasperated. She scooped up the baby from her crib and started to rock her back and forth in her arms. Sandy also tried burping her, humming a little lullaby she made up on the fly⌠no luck. She walks around the house with the baby on her hip, trying to rock her back to sleep.
âWe havenât able to get back on the road in a year,â Carl says, clearly frustrated.
âThat ainât purely my fault,â she spits back, âTakes two to make a baby, Carl.â
âFuck I know,â he groans, âBut I need new inspiration. If I take one more picture of natureâŚâ
âIf sheâs such a hindrance, pay for a damn sitter like I suggested months ago,â she counters.
âWe canât have no stranger walking around the house Sandy,â he points out.
âJust keep your damn room locked, itâs not a huge deal,â Sandy sighs. âBesides, no one is gonna snoop around if you pay âem enough. You damn well produce your own incriminating evidence; you should always have that room locked anyways.â
âWe only have to worry about your damn brother,â Carl points out, âWe hire a fucking sitter thatâs two people we need to worry about.â
âYouâre just to goddamn cheap to hire somebody,â Sandy states, moving back towards the nursery, the baby now snoring softly.
âYou know what? Fine,â Carl says defeated. âBut youâre in charge of putting the ad out and hiring somebody.â
âThank you,â she says in a sing song tone, happy she got her way. But the moment of quiet that follows is short lived as they baby starts crying again.
âPlease for the love of God can you just take care of that?â Carl yells, and the argument circles back to the beginning.
You had sat in the small dinner in the corner booth hunched over the newspaper and nursing your now cold cup of coffee. You had just arrived in Knockemstiff and were looking for work. âAny leads?â Julie asked as she topped off your coffee. Julie was your roommate. You had found her the same way you were currently looking for a job. You must have answered at least ten terrible Roommate Wanted ads until you had found Julie. The two of you now share an apartment- the top floor of a three-family owned by a sweet older couple.
âThank you,â you say without looking up from scanning the ads. âMaybe this one?â You say pointing to one of the ads. She looks to see her manager stepped out for his smoke break before sliding in the booth across from you. You slide the paper over to her and she reads the ad out loud.
NANNY NEEDED Knockemstiff, Ohio
Couple that travels for work in need of a nanny for one-year-old daughter.
Temporary live-in position for several weeks at a time. Pay negotiable.
Call Sandy Henderson at the below number.
âI can sublet the room temporarily while you stay there,â Julie offers. âItâs a pretty vague offer,â she continues. âI wouldnât commit until you call and speak to that Sandy woman.â
âOh, Iâm sure Iâll need to be interviewed,â you agree. âWhat kind of people are comfortable just leaving their baby for weeks at a time with a perfect stranger?â
âPaul is still out back I think,â she chuckles, âIâll let you use the wall phone.â
You take a seat at one of the stools at the counter, and she dials the number for you and then passes you the receiver. You mouth a thank you and she waves her hand in dismissal as she heads over to take someoneâs order.
âWhaddya want?â the woman on the other end answers abruptly.
âOh, Iâm calling about the ad in the paper regarding the nanny position. Is it still available?â
âOh, shit. Iâm so sorry, hun,â the woman says, now in a much nicer tone. âThought it was my brother calling. Yes, it is, and we need it filled as soon as possible. When are you available?â
âFor an interview?â You ask.
âYeah,â she says mumbled, like she is dangling a cigarette from her mouth. âCan you come today?â
âOh, wow. Yes, I can,â you reply.
âGreat, um, you got a pen? Take down this address.â
About two hours, a change of clothes and a cab ride later, you were standing outside a house towards the end of town. It was a little run down, but what building in this town wasnât? You were a little nervous of course, but it was also the most unconventional way you have gotten an interview. Part of you was relieved, because the woman on the phone sounded real, not phony, but the circumstances still made you uneasy. Julie had the address and said youâd call when you got back to the taxi dispatch.
âWelcome, welcome,â Sandy smiled, opening up the door for you. She had one hand on the doorknob and one of the cutest babies youâd ever seen in the other. âCome on in, make yourself comfortable.â
âWho is this?â you coo, leaning down to the babyâs eye level. âSheâs darling.â
âThis little sweetheart is Valerie,â Sandy smiles, passing the baby to you. âSheâs so well-behaved. Hardly ever cries.â
âSheâs adorable,â you smile, as the baby cuddles up close, resting her head on your shoulder. âI didnât properly introduce myself on the phone. (Y/N) (Y/L/N).â
âIâm Sandy,â she introduces herself. âPlease take a seat on the couch, get comfortable. I hate things that are so formal. Bleh.â
You take a seat on the couch, and readjust the little girl in your arms so sheâs sitting on your lap and her back is resting against you so she is supported.
âSo, my husband and I are on the road a lot, usually,â she begins, âWe took some time off when we had Valerie, but we really need to start working again, you understand.â
âOf course, what do you both do?â you ask politely.
âWeâre photographers,â she beams, âMostly nature and landmarks- which reminds me! We have a darkroom in the house, but that door will be locked when youâre staying here. We donât want any damage to any of the negatives we have stored in there you understand. Everywhere else in the house is yours to explore! And of course we gotta spare bedroom you can call your own.â
âFair enough,â you joke.
âSo, tell me about yourself, honey,â she smiles, crossing her legs in the armchair where she sat.
âWell, I just moved here a few weeks ago actually,â you begin, âI just recently finished school, and now Iâm looking for work. I just got my degree in early childcare from the state college.â
âOh, thatâs wonderful,â she says with a clap of her hands. âSo, youâre local?â
âYes, I live in town.â
âExcellent! Weâd also love for this to be like an on-call thing as well, you know for date nights and things like that for times when weâre home. Like for a few hours here and there. And of course, weâll always live money for groceries or whatever you need on top of your pay for emergencies incase Valerie needs formula or diapers or anything.â
âPerfect,â you smile, surprised how well the conversation was going. Sandy was easy-going and nice to talk to. The two of you sat and talked for a little under an hour, her asking all the standard questions you anticipated. You also were able to ask her some more of your own questions as well. It was the most effortless interview you had been on easily.
âIâm sorry you werenât able to meet Carl today,â she says when she is showing you out. âBut hun, I feel confident to offer you the job. We havenât had many applicants and youâre the most qualified one Iâve spoken to. The job is yours if you want it?â
âWhen can I start?â you smile, making her laugh.
âYour number is on the resume, right?â she says, scooping up the baby. You nod, waving goodbye to the baby and then saying goodbye to Sandy.
âIâll call you when I speak to Carl, but I think once he knows heâll want to head out as soon as we can. Plan for Sunday,â she says as you get into the cab.
Just like she had promised, you get a call from Sandy on Saturday afternoon asking you to show up the next morning at 9. You spend the day packing up your clothes and anything else youâd need for a few weeks. Sandy said theyâd be back in two weeks but you pack for three just in case. Julie was also nice enough to help you. You didnât need to do much. Ever since you had settled in Knockemstiff, you had been pretty lazy with unpacking and for once procrastination played out in your favor.
Julie insisted on taking you out to celebrate that night before starting your job tomorrow. There was a small little bar, a little shack of a place just on the outside of town you went to. Julie had a car and you drove, anticipating sheâd have a lot more to drink than you. It was a hotter summer night, so you drove with the windows down and the radio playing a little louder than you normally would.
The outside was decorated with string lights of primary colors and the wooden awning looked like it was one more storm away from collapsing. But the atmosphere inside was to die for. The jukebox was playing loud dance music, and the place was crowded. Empty recycled glasses lined the walls on a high shelf as decoration along with weathered posters of anything Americana. A row of motorcycles and trucks were parked outside the little place and it looked like a pileup from how crowded the lot was. People lingered outside as well, and you both hoped youâd find seats inside.
The two of you found a high-top table and Julie made her way up to the bar, skillfully maneuvering through the crowd to grab you both some drinks. You let your eyes wandering, surveying the room and just people watching. Couples were dancing closely to the music that was rattling the jukebox, and a group of people were sitting at the bar huddles in to watch the little black and white portable television. You also noticed a group of men in uniform several tables down, local police. They werenât paying any attention to anyone but their own conversation, except one.
He just so happened to have looked up just as your eyes landed on their table. Steel blue eyes cutting across everything and just staring right back into yours. It was a fraction of a second and his gaze was broken by Julie taking her seat across from you. You cleared your throat, and finally allowed yourself to exhale. You felt her raise an eyebrow at you but she didnât press, just gave you a knowing smirk you brushed off. You still felt his gaze on you even if your view was now obstructed.
Sandy and Carl were in a rush when you arrived in the morning. Sandy ran you through the details of where everything was kept and told you that she would call to check in when she could when they made stopped. She helped you carry your bags in from the trunk of the taxi while Carl packed their bags in their car. He was polite enough, but you felt in your gut to just keep your distance. Sandy led you upstairs to the guest room she told you she worked to clean out for you. It was simple, a bed and a dresser with a small closet. She said it mostly had been storage and her weekend project had been clearing it out for you. It was simple, but good enough for you for sure. You thanked her and she dismissed it saying you were the one doing her a favor, making you laugh.
The whole ordeal was very hurried. Carl was rushing to get on the road as soon as possible and you could tell he was clearly irritated at how long Sandy was taking showing you around and explaining things about Valerie. Carrying the baby in your arms, you finally were settled in to your new role and Sandy gave one more big hug and a kiss on Valerieâs head before rushing down to the car. You waved to the pair of them from the small front porch, Sandy looking back and waving to the baby from the passenger seat until they were out of your line of vision.
The first day was a little daunting. New space, living in a house that isnât yours and a baby babbling in your arms. She was a sweet thing, and she already had taken a liking to you. Heading over to her nursery, you saw that she had a little play pen folded up in the corner of the nursery and you quickly set it up in your room so you could unpack while keeping an eye on her. She babbled just happy utter nonsense to you while you navigated around the space and her big eyes just followed you, just watching you was entertaining for her for now. You were a new face and she was entertained just by that for now.
A few hours later, Valerie had settled down for a nap in the early afternoon. She was sleeping soundly in her crib and you were getting formula ready for when she woke up. It was quiet, the only noise in the house was the small sounds of your own rustling in the kitchen. You wondered when you would hear from Sandy, if it would be later tonight or in a couple of days. You just were lost in your own thoughts when you were startled by a loud knocking on the door. Instantly, Valerie began to cry. You wiped your hands quickly on the skirt of your dress before grabbing her. You rested her on your hip and rocked her gently, shushing her to calm down while you went to grab the door.
The first thing your eyes saw were the same blue eyes who was looking at you at the bar last night. The manâs eyebrows furrowed and he looked really confused. He had one hand rested on his hip and the other against the doorframe, but he stood up straight when he saw it wasnât who he expected. Your eyes then went down to the shiny Sheriffâs Badge fixed in place on his uniform.
âWho are you?â he asks abruptly. âWhereâs Sandy?â
âSandy and Carl left this morning,â you explain, not sure if he recognizes you. âIâm their nanny.â
He laughs and shakes his head as he looks down, almost like he doesnât believe you, or he just doesnât believe the situation. âCarl? Carl Henderson hired a nanny?â he scoffs and you nod, holding Valerie a little closer. The little girl rubs her eyes and yawns, when her eyes flutter open, she looks at the stranger in the doorway and immediately reaches out to signal she wants to be held by him. You ignore her resistance to wanting to be in your arms until you get more information about why the Sheriff is at their doorstep, though she obviously knows him.
âIâm Sandyâs brother,â he explains, âDid she say when they were coming back?â He doesnât try to hold the baby yet, just holds out one of his fingers and her little hand holds onto it tightly.
âTwo weeks.â
âThey hire a complete stranger to watch my niece and live in their house unsupervised while they drive around?â he scoffs, shaking his head again in disbelief.
âIâm more than qualifiedâŚâ
âItâs not a jab at you, sweetheart,â the man tries to explain, âMore so a reflection on my sister and her husband is all. They are⌠fairly selfish people and I wished this situation surprises me more than it does.â
âShould I tell her you came by when she calls?â you ask.
âIf she calls,â the man chuckles, âSure, let her know Lee stopped by to visit.â
âYou donât think she will?â you ask, tilting your head.
âWeâll see,â Lee shrugs, âDo I know you from somewhere?â He rests his arm back up on the doorframe and looks down to the baby again, extending out his free hand to her again and scrunching her cheeks.
âI donât know,â you shrug, not wanting to admit you remembered seeing him last night. He purses his lips together and nods, not pressing further. He pushes off from the doorframe and puts his hands into the pockets of his leather jacket.
âMustâve been in a dream then,â he smirks, and you feel your cheeks flush. He walks down the steps and back towards his cop car. âWhat did you say your name was?â he asks, turning back around.
âI didnât,â you chuckle.
âHmm,â he nods, and raises his eyebrows, waiting for you to fill in the blank. You tell him your name and he repeats it back to you like heâs thinking about it, trying it out to see how it sounds.
âWell,â he says, standing behind the open driverâs door, âGood luck, and I hope Sandy proves me wrong. Let me know if she calls.â

Itâs been a few days since your date with Jisung and you havenât seen him since. Was this something you brought upon yourself? Yes.
Dumbass...
You stared blankly at the ceiling, thinking about the last text you sent him. âSorry, I think I caught a coldâ? Why would you say that to him?! You were so focused on wallowing in shame that the sound of the doorknob twisting did not register in your mind at first.
âY/N~! IâM BACK!â a feminine voice yelled out as you watched the door flung open all of a sudden. Forgot sheâs coming back, you thought as the face of your beloved roommate entered your field of sight. âHELLO~! OhâŚâ
âWelcome back, Lia,â you greeted her unenthusiastically, staring at her without any expression.
âGirl,â she stopped, taking in the way your body was splayed limply on the crĂŠme-colored couch. âI didnât realize I took your happiness with me.â
You scoffed, rolling your eyes. âHa ha.â
Lia closed the door behind her, dragging in her large grey luggage. âLooks like I brought your sense of humor too. Do you want me to go back to Canada to find it?â
Groaning, you sat up, staring at her dead in the eye, while she laughed at her own joke. She struggled with bringing in her suitcase while mumbling about âhow hilarious she isâ and that she should do standup comedy. Once she had successfully hauled her luggage through the cramped hallway, she pushed it to the corner of the living room before walking to where you were at. She plopped down beside you with a bounce, moving the throw pillow onto her lap.
âSo why do you look like...that?â
âBoy troubles.â
âBoy troubles?!â Lia said in shock. âWow, I never thought Iâd hear that from you.â
Taking her words to slight offense, you glared at her, pouting. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âNothing! Itâs just thatânevermind, continue!â
âWell, okay then... First off, Minho is a menace to society. Never go to a party with him,â you announced, adjusting your position without making any eye contact.
Your roommate chuckled. âWhat? Why start off like that?â
âItâs an important piece of information,â you waved her off, as if you were telling her to just listen and donât ask questions. âSo, I went to a party with him and Hyunjin a few weeks ago, right?â
âYeah, how was it by the way?â
âBig. Seo Changbin is a rich motherfucker,â you deadpanned, snapping your neck to finally look at her. Meanwhile Lia laughed boisterously at your unexpected dryness.
âAnyways, Jinnie got DRUNK about thirty minutes later and Minho, being the dear friend he thinks he is, went off flirting with this dude with a red beanie, leaving me to babysit him.â
Lia interrupted. âHold on, when do these âboy troublesâ come in?â
You hushed her, covering her mouth with your foot. She swat your foot away from her face as you spoke. âWait. I was getting there!â you complained. âSo the red beanie dude Min was talking to, the one I mentioned earlier? I thought he was hot as hell, like if I wasnât so busy dealing with a drunken Hyunie, I wouldâve shoot my shot with him but nooo. Minho is a BITCH but it's okay, I still love him, especially since heâs the reason I have a thing now with that red beanie cutie.â
âGirl, really?! How did he do that?â
You sighed, jokingly scolding her, âMaybe if you didnât interrupt me every damn minute, Julia, I wouldâve finished my story faster.â
âItâs not my fault your storytelling skills are horrendous!â she huffed. âBut sorry, I wonât interrupt now! Keep going!â
âOkay, so, after a while, I finally got Min to help me, which took like, another thirty minutes, I think? Then fast forward a little, that lazy bitch is driving us home, the drunk bitch is suffocating me with affection, and Iâm just wondering why the hell those two are my best friends, but whatever. After Minho dropped me home, I wanted to text him to thank him for helping me wrangle Hyunjin, even though I forced him to, and I thought did, right?â you paused for a moment to see if Lia was still following along. After a subtle nod from her, you continued. âSo I thanked âhimâ then asked âhimâ if he could give me that red beanie cutieâs number, which, to the total surprise of my dumbass, ended up being him.â
âOoh...plot twist!â she randomly cheered, making you snort. âSorry...I just had to add that!â
âItâs okay, that was the perfect commentary for that situation,â you giggled, adjusting yourself on the couch. âBut yeah, fast forward again, and weâve been hanging out, texting, and just recently, went on a date.â
âThatâs great, Y/n!â Lia hugged you. She leisurely rocked you until she realized something was wrong with your story. She asked, abruptly letting go of you, âHold on, why did you leave it at a good ending? Whereâs the âtroubleâ?â Before you could answer, the sound of your notifications going off from your phone stopped you. You leaned over to see who texted you, picking it up.
(3) new message(s) from: Hannie Bear đŻđ§¸
âHannie Bear?â Lia giggled. âThatâs such a cute nickname. Whoâs that? Is that the boy you were talking about?â She proceeded to coo, shaking you around and making kissy noises.
You hushed her, cutely pouting, âShut up, he gave himself that name.â You playfully pushed her face away, turning to the other side. You tapped on the notification banner to read it from your lockscreen.
Hannie Bear đŻđ§¸: hey babe!
i noticed you didnât come to class today either
are you still feeling sick baby? :( do you want me to come over?
âHuh? I didnât know you were sick, Y/n,â Lia said slowly. You turned your head to see her looking over your shoulder, eyeing you suspiciously.
âOh! UhâThatâs funny âcauseââ
âY/n, when was the last time you texted that boy?â You stayed quiet, avoiding eye contact with her. âY/n?â she said sternly.
You sighed guiltily. â3 days agoâŚ4 since I last saw him.â you mumbled, with the fuzz on your socks.
â3!?â she gasped, âText that poor boy!â You hesitantly unlocked your phone, bringing your phone up to your face.
Me: Yeah, sorry Sung, Iâm still kinda sick :( bleh
Please donât come over! I donât want you to get sick cause of me
Hannie Bear đŻđ§¸: aww but i miss you :((
itâs okay. i wonât bother you now
just take care, okay? Get well soon!
i love you! â¤ď¸
âI love youâ...Thereâs that stupid sentence again. Why does he keep saying that?
All of a sudden, your roommate pulled your arm towards her, forcing you to show your phone to her. She glared at the screen. âYou are a terrible person, you know?â she commented after reading all your messages. You sighed, silently agreeing with her. âWhy would you tell him youâre sick!?â
âI donât know! Iâm sorry!â
âDonât apologize to me! Apologize to âHannie Bearâ! Tell him that youâre not sick!â
You spluttered, panicking. âNO! He doesnât have to know that Iâm not sick!â You lunged away from her to move your phone from her as far as you could. Lia payed no attention to your action, a bit confused with your reaction.
âThen why are you lying to him!? Are you avoiding him?â
âNO! IâY-YES?! I DONâT KNOW ANYMORE!â you yelled, chucking your phone to her lap. You let out a heavy exhale, rubbing your face while you laid half your body down. Lia got up, locking your phone, and walked in front of you.
âTalk to me, Y/n,â she gently said. âWhatâs wrong? He seems like a nice guy.â
âHe is,â you whispered. âGod, heâs so fucking sweet and funny and considerate andâfuck. I donât knowâŚâ She squeezed your arm, silently comforting you. You removed your hands from your face and sat up, looking at your sweetheart of a roommate with uncertain eyes. âLia, I donât know how to feel. Iâm so confused! I think..everything happened so fast that... I-Iâm scared...I donât wanna fall in love with him. I donât want to fall in love, in general. I-Iâm not ready! Iâm so scared thatââ
âListen,â she stopped you, moving to sit beside you again to wrap her arms around you. âI know that every single one of your past relationships werenât the greatest. But that doesn't mean you should NOT fall in love with anyone anymore. I know itâs scary, but at least...try? And if you really donât think it will work out, then please donât lead him on like that. Thatâs just going to make the whole situation worse. It will only hurt more.â
You took a deep breath, calming yourself down. âYouâre right. Iâm sorry.â
Lia let go, leaving her hands on your shoulders. âYou donât have to talk to him today but please go to school tomorrow to talk to him, face to face. Deal?â
âDeal.â She brought you back to her arms, hugging you tighter and rubbing your back. You wrapped your arms around her figure with the same amount of urgency. The two of you stayed like that for a few sentences until she let go first.
âThank you for being here for me, Lia,â you muttered into her neck.
She hummed, burying her head into your neck. âOf course. Whenever you need some âgirl talkâ, you know Iâll always be there for you.â
You released yourself from her grip, sniffling. âWelcome back home, again, Jules,â you grinned. âWanna tell me about your trip back home?â
You walked through the semi-crowded halls, anxious. Iâm getting a serious case of deja vu right now, you thought, quietly snickering to yourself. You gripped your bags closer to you, walking in a quicker pace until you reached your locker. Setting the combination of the lock, you swung the door open, digging through the small storage to switch out your books for the day.
âHey, Y/n!â
You flinched, hearing someone randomly call out your name. Slowly turning around, filled with dread, you saw Seungmin and Jeongin walking up to you. Your shoulders slumped in relief. âGood morning, Y/n,â Seungmin greeted with a warm smile.
âMorning. Wow, itâs amazing to see you early,â you laughed, referring to Jeongin.
He scrunched his face then laughed. âIâve been coming early for the past few days already. You wouldâve known if youâve been here.â
âOh yeah, what happened to you? Are you okay?â the other boy asked.
Your heart stopped, panic surging through you. Why are you so scared? Theyâre not the ones youâre avoiding! You stared at the two boys like a deer caught in headlights. âUhm...Sorry about the sudden disappearance but Iâuhâcaught a cold a few days ago.â
âOh really?â Jeongin said. âI mean, you do look tired though so I guess that explains it, but good to know youâre good now!â
âAre you sure youâre even fully recovered?â Seungmin gave you a subtle stank look. âYou should be wearing a mask, or something! Did you remember to bring some medication with you today? Donât push yourself too much! We donât wanna be responsible for dragging you to the clinic.â
You rolled your eyes, scoffing. âThanks, Seungmo. I knew I could always count on you.â
âI donât like getting sick, Y/n. Please respect that.â
Jeongin laughed. âI donât mind!â he chimed. âCome here and spit into my mouth!â
âJeongin! What the heck? Thatâs freaking gross!â Seungmin exclaimed in pure disgust.
You and Jeongin roared with laughter; Jeongin hunched over, laughing even harder when he noticed Seungmin taking small baby steps away from the both of you. âIt was a joke, Seungmin!â he wheezed. âDonât run away!â
âStop, get away from me.â He swatted the youngerâs wandering hands away. Seungmin clicked his tongue, âI mean it. Donât you dare!â
âAw, no need to be so mean! Weâre friends, arenât we? And friends share everything together!â you quipped.
âNot âeverythingââ Jeongin, stop!â Seungmin groaned, jokingly pushing Jeongin away as the latter started to rub his chest, laughing. âGod, why are both of you so irritating? Gross.â
Your laughs started to die down when you remember a key detail. You werenât actually sick at all; you didnât like lying to them even if it was just a small one. Eyes scanning through the halls, you checked to see if there were any unwanted eavesdroppers. âNow I feel bad,â you said, âtruth is, Iââ
âWhatâs wrong?â Jeongin asked, stopping his annoying advances. Staring at their worried expressions made you remember that these are Jisungâs friends as well-- so that means they might tell Jisung about your troubles, especially Seungmin.
âI..uhââ your voice cracked, âactually, I wasnât that sickâI mean, I was, i guess. But it was more of a⌠âmental healthâ day! YeahâŚâ I mean, it kinda was though?
The two boys âawwâed in pity. Seungmin was the first to comfort you. âDo not worry about it, Y/n,â he spoke softly, rubbing your back in comfort, âI know this monthâs been busy for you, especially with that project Mr. Kim gave you. I think a mental health day was called for.â
Jeongin stepped forward, patting your shoulder. âYup! Next time you have a âsick dayâ call me so we can have one together!â he grinned.
âYou know, youâre too eager to skip school, Yeni.â You narrowed your eyes, chuckling. Jeongin shrugged.
âNo! Itâs more so to comfort you at your lowest! I also donât wanna go to school either....â
Seungmin scoffed, âThere it isâŚâ
âBut itâs true! I do also want to be there for Y/n! At least I admitted that Iâm also just lazy to go to school.â
The two of you snickered at your younger friend as he frowned. Seungmin tugged on Jeongin bag in an attempt to drag him away. âLetâs go now. The bellâs going to ring soon. Iâll see you later, Y/n. Bye,â he said, waving goodbye. You giggled, the sight of him dragging Jeongin the way he was vaguely reminded you of a dog going on a walk. You waved back to the two of them, internally giggling.
âOh! Whatever you do, please donât tell Jisung Iâm here today!â you called out. They looked at each other in confusion, wanting to inquire about your odd request. Ignoring their puzzled expressions, you turned around to finish switching out your books. Finally grabbing your Environmental Science textbook, you closed your locker, fumbling with your lock to hook it back onto the handle. Getting a strange feeling of someone watching you, you looked over to your right, catching a glimpse of dark blue hair walking away from you.
You laid in the darkness of your room, the dim brightness of your phone bouncing off of your face being the only source of light. You were scrolling through your social media when a notification banner with a message from Jisung popped up.
Hannie Bear đŻđ§¸: hey y/n letâs talk
You sat up in agitation, mentally debating if you should answer him or just pretend you didnât see his message until you were ready. In a state of panic, instead of swiping the banner away, you accidentally clicked on it. Shit! you thought in horror. You already felt guilty enough for avoiding him, leaving him on read would just make you an asshole.
Me: Hi Sung!
Whatâs wrong?
You drummed your fingers against your blanket, anxiously waiting for his response.
Hannie Bear đŻđ§¸: hmm...nothing :))
i just wanted to check up on you
You let out a heavy sigh of relief, clutching your chest; your heartbeat now calming down. You brought your phone closer to your face, thumbs typing away.
Me: Awww youâre so sweet Sungie
How was your day?
Right as you finally calmed down, his next plethora of messages sent you back into a panic.
Hannie Bear đŻđ§¸: it was good. but...uhm
hey y/n?
just know, even though weâve only known each other for a month, i still care a lot about you
if thereâs anything thatâs bothering you PLEASE talk to me, okay?
thatâs all i wanted to tell you. take care, okay?
goodnight.
i love you
Your anxiety levels increased tenfold. Did he know? Feeling more guilty than ever, you read his messages over and over again with a heavy heart. I donât deserve himâŚHe really doesnât deserve this!
Me: Of course Sung. Thank you
Iâll see you tomorrow
Looks like itâs time to face him again.
...You had no sleep, whatsoever.
The guilt and anxiety you felt from avoiding Jisung for the past few days was eating you alive. Why am I such a terrible person? You (not so gently) smacked your head into the wooden table, concerning the other onlookers in the library. You wanted to spend your impromptu free period loathing yourself before you had to see Jisung next period; alone. However, that plan was immediately shattered the second you felt a presence behind you.
âBoo!â someone whispered into your ear, slightly shaking you. You jumped, turning around to glare at whoever bothered you, only to see the smiling face of your best friend.
âHyunie? What are you doing here?â your eyes followed him, watching him take the seat beside you. âl thought you and Lixie were gonna go to the studio?â
Hyunjin threw his back onto the table, resting his head on the table to match you. âWe were but Lix left me to help some of his old theatre buddies and I donât like being alone so now, Iâm here! Besides, why would I leave my favorite person alone?â
You gave him a cheery smile. âThanks, Hyunjin.â
âMhm! I noticed you looked kind of sad though. Are you okay?â
You scrunch your face with a hiss. âYou noticed?â
âUh? Of course I did!â he drawled. âIâve known you for over ten years already, Y/n. Itâs kinda hard to not notice something like that.â You sat up, grumbling, not wanting to tell Hyunjin exactly why youâve been so weird lately. He sat up with you, now serious. âY/n? Is this because of Jisung? Did something happen between the two of you?â
âNo!â You boomed. Your face heated up in embarrassment when you noticed the nasty look some people gave you. Muttering a quiet âsorryâ, you hunched over, leaning closer to Hyunjin. âJisung did nothing wrong. Actually Jisung is a total sweetheart so thereâs nothing to complain about him. Itâs justâŚâ
âWhat? Did you find out about the hentai he watches in his free time?â
âWhat? No? Hold up, he watches hentai?â
Hyunjin shrugged with his hands up, faking a clueless look. âI donât really know if he does watch it, perse, but I did catch him watching a softcore hentai before.â
Your eyes narrowed. âHuh? Nevermind. Itâs not important whether he watches hentai or not anyways.â
âGood. Donât let that get in between your relationship! Donât wanna ruin a perfectly healthy one!â he said with a slight chuckle. Your mood instantly turned sour at the mention of your relationship. Of course, Hyunjin noticed it right away. âY/n?â
You sighed, biting your lip. âIf i tell you, you promise not to tell anyone?â
âHonestly, unless youâre cheating on him or something, then of course I gotta tell someone, heâs my friend too. Other than that, I promise!â
âOkay, great. And donât worry! I would never cheat! Only on tests though,â you jested. The both of you chuckled before the mood went serious again. âSo, you know how Jisung and I went on a date about a week ago, right?â
âYeahâŚ?â
âThat day...Jisung said the âLâ word.â
Hyunjin gasped. âThe big âLâ?! He said âI love youâ to you?â he queried, mouthing out the âI love youâ part. You nodded with wide eyes.
âYupâŚA full on Kdrama-inspired declaration of love when we were alone at the park!â
âY/n, thatâs honestly amazing! Did you say it back?â Your face was sullen, slowly shaking your head. âOh, really? Hm. Thatâs a little...huh.â
âHe says it a lot too.â
âOh yikes,â he lamented. âNo pressure or anything but, if you feel uncomfortable with it, maybe you should tell him?â
âNo, itâs not that Iâm uncomfortable itâs just thatâ geez I actually donât know!â you cried out as quietly as you could, slouching in your chair. Hyunjin pouted in pity, leaning over to pat your thigh.
âItâs okay. You donât have to explain yourself if you canât or donât want to. But I still think you should talk to Jisung about your stance in your relationship. You know heâs a sensitive boy.â
âI heard,â you sighed. âBut I donât think I have the heart to tell him exactly what I think about him.â
âYou kinda have to eventually? Tell him if you want to make it official or if you wanna break it off. The sooner, the better; otherwise youâre basically just leading him on.â
âGod, I know, Hyunjin! You think I donât know that!?â
He patted your head in an attempt to calm you down. âHey, hey. I know you know. Iâm just telling you,â he whispered calmly. âJisung is an amazing person. Heâs very sweet, caring, fun, and honestly just the go-to person when you need a shoulder to cry on. Anyone is lucky to be with him!â
âYeah, yeah, I know heâs all that. Heâs nice and everything but he wasnât someone I wanted to have feelings for! Jisung was just supposed to be a fuck buddy! No love, no affection, no feelings whatsoever, why did he fall in love with me?!â you wailed. âI was not supposed to fall in love with Han Jisung. To be honest, I kind of wish we never met.â
Hyunjin stared with a sorrowful look, knowing exactly why youâre freaking out the way you are. He was about to comfort you and give you advice when somethingâor someoneâcaught his eye. His eyes widened, weakly muttering an âoh shitâ. You turned around, following his gaze to seeâŚ
Oh shitâŚ
You abruptly stood up, mouth opening and closing, trying to find the right words to say to Jisung, who was staring at you with an indescribable look in his eyes. âJ-Jisung! I...What are youââ
âI came here to look for some books for a research paper,â Jisung said. You tried to ignore how his cold tone sent a pang of sadness through your chest.
âOh. Okay,â you awkwardly smiled. âI-I really like the new hair. Dark blue suits you!â
âThank you...I remembered how you said you wanted me to try dying my hair blue so...I did it...to your request.â
âO-Oh, really?â
âI wanted to surprise you,â he muttered, pressing his lips together. âBut apparently you had a surprise for me tooâŚâ
âIâ How much did you hearâŚ?â
âEverything, Iâve been here since after Hyunjin came in. Listen. Y/n...I told you, if you had a problem, especially if itâs about me, tell me about it, face to face, instead of talking about me behind my back. That shit is embarrassing, you know? Being talked about like that from someone you thought you could trust.â
âJisungâŚâ
âI want to hear you out, I really do. But I donât think I want to talk to you right now, âspecially after what you said? I donât think itâs fair to me.â Jisungâs voice was starting to grow loud and desperate, tears forming in his eyes. âI poured my feelings out to you; I told you I loved you. I knew it was too soon to tell you that but I still took that leap, cause I thought we had a connection. I knew deep down you felt the sameâ at least, I thought I didâŚI thought youâd say it eventually but not once have you ever said âI love youâ back, Y/n! Do you know how much that killed me? I thought Iâd be okay with it but everytime I expressed my feelings for you but never got a response back, it hurt! It made me feel like Iâm just wasting my time! I-I FELT LIKE AN IDIOT!â
Hyunjin stepped in, hushing the both of you. âGuys, I know this is something between the two of you, but people are watching now. You should take this outside.â
âNo. Itâs okay, man. I said what I wanted to say,â Jisung said, already making his way out of the library. âGoodbye, Y/n. Take care, alright?â
âNo...Jisung, wait!â You forced your shaky legs to chase after him. However, Hyunjin wrapped his arms around you, stopping you.
âNo, Y/n. Give yourselves time,â he whispered into your hair, kissing the top of it to calm you down. You turned around and cried into chest, clutching onto him tightly. He tried his best to maneuver you both around to a more secluded area of the library, mouthing out a bunch of âsorryâs for the scene that was created. Finding a dark corner between the aisles, he carefully pushed you to it, lifting your head to see your face. You looked up, red faced with tears and snot running down your face.
Hyunjin reached into his pocket to take his handkerchief to wipe your messy face. He held the cloth against your nose, wordlessly telling you to blow your nose. Despite how disgusting he found the sound was, he resisted the urge to cringe, seeing how this was no time to act dramatic. âItâs okay, Y/n. Breathe,â he gently comforted you. He left the dirtied handkerchief on his lap and securely wrapped his arms around you again. He caressed your back, softly humming a sweet song. âShh shh. Youâll be okay. Just let it out.â
You weakly stuttered, âI didnât want to tell him like that. I didnât want him to think I didnât love him back, Hyunjin.â
âEverything will be okay, Y/n. Just cry it out first, then weâll deal with this together.â
âI didnât mean to hurt his feelings! This is my fault! Itâs because I was a fucking idiot and let my fears get in between us!â
Hyunjin just stayed silent and hugged you tighter, moving his hand to the back of your head to tuck you into his neck. He played with your hair, knowing how relaxing it was to you. He went back to humming another song and held you until you were calm again. You let go of him, still sniffling.
âFeel better now?â Hyunjin asked. You shook your head no.
âNot really. I still feel like shit but not as much as before.â
âI mean, thatâs still progress?â he tried joking around to lift your spirits. The joke only went over your head though.
âYeah. Better than crying,â you agreed listlessly, wiping your nose. He stood up and held his hands out. You took them, hoisting yourself up. âThank you, Hyunie. I love you.â
âOf course, I love you too, Y/n. Talk to Ji when youâre ready again, okay?â He led you out of the dark aisle to go back to your table. You latched yourself onto his arm, hiding your face.
âOkay. But for now, can you please just take me home? I donât think Iâm in the right mindset now to continue the rest of the day.â
âNo problem. Anything for you.â

JJ Maybank Must Die | Chapter 1: Popsicles
fuckboy!JJ x ReaderÂ
series masterlist
JJ Maybank is the islandâs most infamous fuckboy- not that you ever cared. But when a group of tourist girls come to your surf shop crying to you about him, you agree to help them plot revenge. Sabotage is all fun and games, until you find that the playboy you were sworn to ruin happens to be falling head over heels for you.
Yes, this is based on John Tucker Must Die lol
note: so this is my second JJ fic! Iâm so excited for yaâll to read it. itâll be more light-hearted and shorter than DLS :)Â
âCome on... come on! This one right here letâs go!â you yelped. The crowd behind you was practically chattering on their fingernails.Â
The seven year old boy in the water paddled as hard as his lanky arms could take him towards the daunting wave.Â
âNow Gavin now! Stand up!â you shrieked as the boy hurriedly went through your instructed steps, tucking his knee, and thrusting upwards as the wave got close. Then, before he even realized, he glided rigidly along the wave as the board carried him across the water.Â
âHooray! Awesome job Gavin!â The flock cheered and rushed to pat the boy on the back, his dad lifting him up in his arms.Â
The child scuttled towards you and threw his arms around your neck. You chuckled delightedly. âAlright everyone! Thatâs it for our surf lesson today. Be sure to check out the gift shop on your way out!âÂ
You waved bye to the guests as they made way to return their boards to the hut, some handing you rolled up cash, with thankful smiles.Â
Once the coast was clear, you jogged back to the hut only to find Sophia, your best friend and lazy co-worker, lounging with her legs stretched on the checkout counter of the tiny surf shack. She hung a lollipop in her mouth while her eyes glued to her phone screen.Â
âYou know, when you asked me to find you a job, I actually thought you meant one where you actually work.âÂ
Sophia popped out the sucker and threw you a glare. âI did work! See!â she pointed her hand at the sign hanging beside the door that read âOBX Surf and Sportsâ, âI put that sign up this morning.âÂ
âItâs crooked.âÂ
âBleh, bleh, bleh,â she mocked, âNothing I ever do is good enough.â You chuckled and shook your head at her.Â
You peered out the giant window at the front of the store, surveying the empty beach. This was going to be the rest of your summer. At sixteen years old, you were one of the Outer Banksâ surfing all-stars and spent your days working as an instructor for the second year in a row.Â
Customers loved you and your ability to work with all ages rendering you the title of âTop Instructorâ at the shack- which didnât mean much seeing as 90% of the employees were amateur teenagers.Â
Nevertheless, you were determined to keep that title, as whoever brought in the most satisfied customers by the end of the summer wins a $5,000 scholarship. And you needed that money bad in order to attend your dream school: UVA.Â
Along the beach, you caught a glimpse of your competition, Cody, and instinctly groaned.Â
On any other occasion, you really didnât care about what people did with their lives, but something about your arrogant, sleazy, five-foot-seven co-worker grinded your gears.Â
He was always man-splaining to you and the other girls at the shack or kissing ass to your boss. And you knew well he was after the scholarship too- your scholarship.Â
âLook at him,â you sneered to Sophia as she joined you at the window to death-glare the boy. He was prepping his group on the sand for their session and looked absolutely despicable in his shorts that were inches away from exposing his little one. Emphasis on the little.Â
âUgh, heâs making them do jumping jacks again,â Sophia pointed out, crinkling her nose, âGod that poor old lady. Can he be any more extra?âÂ
âI need to look away, I think I might vomit if he ever flashed me.âÂ
Your best friend snickered at your hatred as you waxed down your board for your next lesson. âDid the group of girls check in yet?â you asked.Â
âYeah, theyâre sitting and waiting at Eye Sickles,â she informed, referring to the popsicle food-truck next door. âI canât believe they really signed up for the month-long surfing program. I didnât know people actually paid for that.âÂ
âYouâd be surprised. These tourists will buy into anything, trust me,â you said before heading out the door.Â
You walked up to three tourist girls lounging on the fold-out tables and chairs at the food-truck. They were mindlessly typing away on their phones, looking as bored as ever.Â
âAlright, do I have Annalise, Maia, and Arabella?â you announced with your work-smile on. They peered up from their phones and nodded with blank faces.
âAwesome,â you continued, trying to maintain your enthusiasm, âIâm y/n, Iâll be your instructor! I see you guys signed up for the month-long pro-boarding program which is great. Have you guys ever surfed before?âÂ
âNope,â a blonde girl replied, âOur parents found this online and said itâd be good for us to learn while weâre here. Weâre from Richmond, Virginia.âÂ
âOh cool!â you jeered, the fake zeal was oozing at that point. âWell, Iâm happy to be spending the summer with you guys. Iâm going to have you guys grab a board and weâll head down to the sand to go over the basic motions.âÂ
The trio followed you into the hut and picked out a board from the beginners section. You noticed the blonde one giggling with Sophia at the stand for a bit before joining you on the sand. She had a leader-like quality to her while the two other remained quiet but friendly.Â
âAlright so, just for formalities, whoâs who? That way I can identify you better,â you asked as the girls situated their boards along the shore. Â
Not shockingly, the blonde extended her hand to you first. âIâm Annalise,â she greeted a little sullenly. You shrugged off her attitude, attributing it to her being a bougie tourist.Â
âIâm Maia,â a tall, jet-black haired girl said next. She had a very athletic body and came off as the quietest one of the group.Â
âAnd Iâm Arabella,â the last one chimed in. Her hair was a fiery orange and she had piercings run along her ears and nose.Â
âAlright cool! So now, weâll start off with the movements youâll go through once you hit the water. You want to start off flat on your stomach and paddle towards the waves. Make sure you have full control of your board at all times,â you began as the girls copied your demonstration on their own boards.Â
You heard sniffles come from the group, but ignored it to continue your spiel. You could hardly read any of their expressions through their giant, bug-eyed sunglasses.Â
Just as you were about to explain the importance of balance- you favorite part of the lesson- you saw the blonde sit up on her board in irritation and start sobbing through her glasses.Â
âAnnalise come on, itâs not worth it,â the tall one, Maia, reasoned as the Annalise shook her head furiously.Â
âI canât do this right now,â she cried before bolting back towards the shack.Â
You watched her in utter confusion. âWas it something I said?â you asked the remaining two.Â
The orange one shook her head and gave you a sincere look through her glasses. âNo, sheâs just really upset about this guy,â she turned to her friend, âCome on, letâs go check on her.âÂ
At that point, you had no choice but to follow the group towards their distressed friend. This was definitely coming out of their session time.Â
The three of you plowed up the sand to find the girl, Annalise, sprawled on Sophiaâs shoulder at the tables as she cooed her like a baby. You wanted to cringe.Â
âItâs okay, itâs okay. Heâs a piece of shit anyways! Trust me, he did the same to me too,â your best friend comforted and petted the strangerâs yellow hair.Â
âWhatâs going on?â you questioned at the scene. Sophia glanced up at you with a pleading look.Â
âItâs JJ.âÂ
Oh brother. This dude again. JJ Maybank was the Outer Bankâs most infamous fuck boy. Him and his friends threw parties all the time at the Boneyard- ones you have yet to attend- and he effortlessly earned his reputation by sleeping with any girl he could get his grubby hands on.Â
By this point, heâs broken half the hearts on the island with girls moaning and groaning about him left and right- Sophia included. You remembered her wailing the day he ghosted her after they did the nasty. It wasnât a pretty day... or week for the matter.Â
You didnât understand what the big deal was with the guy. Youâd gone to school with him since the first grade and heâd always been that guy that rolls in the mud during playtime in elementary school. And he still was that guy to this day.
You heard all the cringey lines heâd pull on girls at school that would get them swooning and you swore he was running a voodoo business because no one in their right mind could fall for that.Â
But everyone did. Except for you.Â
âWhat? Did he ghost you too?â you gestured towards the wrecked weeping girl.
She nodded and blew her boogers into the tissues Sophia brought out.Â
âI-I, well, we met him at a party this weekend and he took me to this little hideout on the beach. He told me that he never met anyone like me before and said all this other shit. Then we had sex there, which I never do in public, and he said he couldnât wait to see me again. And he never called me after!âÂ
Though you thought her public display was a little too... public, you did feel sorry for her. The guy was a tool, and these tourist girls, especially, didnât know any better.Â
âDonât worry,â Sophia assured, resting a hand atop hers, âhe did it to me and everyone at school. We all fell for the trap.âÂ
Maia and Arabella joined the sitting girls in a piled group hug as the ones in the center sputtered in tears together. You couldnât bear to watch, but for Sophia, you awkwardly joined in anyways.Â
The rest of the surfing session consisted of the girls pulling up their own chairs and bad-mouthing JJ, along with all other men, as everyone licked their popsicles.Â
You sucked on your mango one, not minding the little break as it was the easiest $150 you ever made. The girls werenât as hoity-toity as you first thought. They apologized for wasting your time and promised to leave five-star reviews about you. Even better.Â
As evening rolled in, you found yourself laughing and joking around with your new-found friends. They told you wild stories of their private school shenanigans back in Richmond while you and Sophia filled them in on life at the OBX.Â
âThis day was incredible,â Annalise beamed, dazed after her fourth popsicle. âCanât believe we all bonded like this over a guy,â she chuckled, âI just... gah, I wish we could get him back somehow. Make him feel how we feel!âÂ
âYou should,â you agreed, âWhy donât one of you guys go to the parties and try to seduce him and then leave him hanging? The trick with men is to withhold sex from them and theyâll be helpless.âÂ
Everyoneâs face lit up in excitement at your idea. âNo, totally! We could definitely do that!â Sophia exclaimed with wide eyes. âSo who will it be? Whoâs our hamster?âÂ
âNot me,â Maia objected almost instantly, âI have a boyfriend back home so no seducing will be done on my part.âÂ
âArabella then,â Annalise suggested, nudging the girl beside her.Â
âAlright...â she agreed, fiddling with the string of her bathing suit, âI guess I could take one for the team.âÂ
âThere we go!â you cheered, âYou just march straight into that party, grind on him a bit to leave him hanging, then proceed to embarrass the shit out of him! Problem solved!âÂ

My Chosenâs Keeper CH2
Posting a little early, but I doubt anyone will complain. ;) Who is the mystery voice from the end of last chapter?
Read on AO3
Chapter 2
The putrid smell of old cheese hit her before she even turned around, and the lazy black cat that accompanied it lounged on his side. He tossed a wedge of Camembert into the air and caught it in his gaping mouth, swallowing it whole with a gulp.
âPlagg!â
âGreat prank, sugar cube. Did you see the look on her face?â He snickered, clutching his swollen belly.
âIt wasnât a prank!â
âOh? Then I suppose that sink just malfunctioned all on its own?â He raised a brow, and her cheeks warmed.
âWhat are you doing in here?â Tikki asked, and a mischievous glint flashed in his eyes.
âI could ask you the same thing,â he said, circling herâa cat hunting its prey. âItâs been the weirdest day for your owner. First someone accused her of cheating, but the answers werenât in her bag. Then someone accused her of stealing, and magically, the necklace was returned to its rightful owner. Almost as if she had someone watching over her.â
Tikki averted her gaze with a sigh. âOkay, you caught me. I meddled. Are you going to lecture me about it?â
âNah, lecturingâs not really my style,â Plagg said, leaning back and propping his arms behind his head. âIâm actually impressed youâre finally getting back at that girl, sugar cube. Itâs about time you did something fun. Our owners are such pushovers when it comes to her. Donât you think someone should teach her a lesson?â
âPlagg, no! Iâve already done enough. From now on we should stay out of it,â Tikki said with an emphatic shake of her head.
âSo, you want this girl to keep tormenting your owner?â Plagg asked.
âWell, no, but-â
âHasnât she already been nearly akumatized because of this girl? And in this very bathroom too. What if she canât fight off the akuma next time?â
âI know, but-â
âJust think of how awful the world will be if Hawkmoth gets his hands on those earrings. Not to mention youâll be under his control, and the whole entire world will be-â
âAlright, alright!â Tikki snapped. âI know sheâs dangerous. Thatâs why I interfered today, but we canât just go around meddling in human affairs all the time. Weâve already been seen by a human once. What if it happened again?â
âRelax, sugar cube. You worry too much.â Plagg waved it away, but at her glare, he added, âLook, no one believed that cranky old bat anyway. Everyone thought she was crazy. Besides, itâs not like anyone can capture us.â
âI still donât think itâs right, Plagg,â Tikki said, and he rolled over and floated down to place a hand on her shoulder.
âListen, you know this girl is out to hurt both- bleh and Ladybug. Stopping her could be our most important mission yet,â he said pointedly, and Tikki lowered her gaze.
âOkay, but how are we going to stop her? If we foil her plans, she just comes up with new ones. Sheâll never stop until she succeeds,â she said, and Plagg tapped his chin.
âI think you had the right idea earlier. This girl wonât be able to scheme if sheâs too busy worrying about the universe playing tricks on her,â Plagg said, but Tikki darted several paces back.
âNo way! I already feel bad enough about the sink,â she said, but Plagg gave her a knowing look. âWhat?â
âCome on, sugar cube. Havenât you ever wanted to cut loose and have some fun? Itâs not like our owners give us any restrictions. We can do whatever we want,â he said, and at her conflicted expression added, âLive a little. Partners?â
He held out a small paw that Tikki eyed hesitantly before shaking. Plagg seemed surprised by her acceptance, his ears sticking up straight, and sheâd even surprised herself. But he was right about Lila needing to be dealt with, and she couldnât in good conscience encourage her master to resort to playing dirty. Besides, Lila was too good. This operation needed stealth that only a kwami could achieve.
âAlright, sugar cube, hereâs what weâre gonna do.â
***
Tikki peered out from under Marinetteâs lab bench the following day while students worked in pairs. Marinette was too preoccupied with her assignment to pay attention to her which was fine. Part of Tikki didnât want her knowing what she and Plagg were up to because she didnât want to be up to it herself.
Plagg popped up underneath Lilaâs desk and motioned her over. With a quick glance around the room, she darted over to join him.
âReady, sugar cube?â
âStop calling me that, you know I hate it,â she hissed, but Plagg barely noticed. âAre you sure we should be doing this? Sheâs not even doing anything right now.â
âYet,â Plagg said, catching her gaze with a more serious expression than she was used to from him.
âWhy do you care so much about Lila anyway?â She asked, and he faced forward again, tail flicking.
âLast time she weaseled her way into my ownerâs house, she went through his stuff which included my cheese stash. Iâve never felt more violated in my life,â he said, and Tikki rolled her eyes. Typical. âAnd I donât like how she uses him.â
Tikki smiled at that then rolled her shoulders in preparation. âReady?â
âThree.â
âTwo.â
âOne!â
They surged forward, disappearing into Lilaâs lab chair then popping out moments later with two bolts. Before anyone could see them, they ducked back under the bench with wicked giggles, but Lila didnât sit in her stool right away. She wandered over to Marinette and Alyaâs bench, concealing a test tube behind her back.
âOh, Marinette, Nathaniel and I are a little lost. Can you help us?â She said, tipping the contents of the test tube into Marinetteâs beaker when she wasnât looking.
âHere, Iâll go take a look, girl. You prep this next part,â Alya offered, trading places with Marinette, and Lila walked back to her bench with a smirk.
âSee? She totally deserves to be put in her place,â Plagg said, and Tikki eyed Marinetteâs beaker worriedly.
âWe have to do something before whatever Lila did blows up in Marinetteâs face. Literally.â
âIâve got an idea, but we need a distraction,â Plagg said as a loud crash sounded above them.
âOw!â Lila cried out as her stool gave out under her weight.
âThatâll work,â Plagg said, zipping over to Marinetteâs bench.
Together, they lifted her beaker and swapped it with Lilaâs while everyone was focused on her.
âHow did this happen?â Alya asked, crouching down to examine the stool.
âLooks like some of the bolts came loose,â Nino said, digging them out from under the table.
âSomeone must have unscrewed them. Someoneâs out to get me!â Lila said, but Mme. Mendeleiev shook her head.
âThereâs no need to accuse anyone. These stools are just old. The bolts probably popped out when you stood up. Youâre not hurt, so just go back to-â Mme. Mendeleievâs voice trailed off when Lilaâs beaker erupted onto the counter, and she examined it with a sigh. âYouâre supposed to add the acid last. Thereâs not enough time for you to start over. Youâre just going to have to take a zero on this assignment.â
âBut-â
âNo, buts! Next time read the instructions more carefully.â
Everyone dispersed after that, and Tikki and Plagg retreated under Marinetteâs bench with triumphant beams. They slapped paws before returning to their owners to await their next mission.
***
Lila was quiet the next day, and Tikki thought that sheâd given up on trying to get back at Marinette. It didnât last an hour. By the end of their first class, Lila was already on the move again, but she was no match for Marinetteâs silent guardians.
Tried to hide a book Marinette needed for her history report? Hope she enjoyed the several bumps on her head from a stack of falling books.
Put pudding on the lunchroom chair? Strange how her milk carton mysteriously exploded. She could have fun getting that smell out.
By gym class, Tikki was having the time of her life pranking Lila. She didnât care if it was mean. Lila was a mean girl, so it was all justifiable in her eyes. Or so she told herself, pushing away the nagging feeling in the back of her mind. Plagg was right. It was about time she cut loose, and the more pranks they played, the more she wished sheâd done this ages ago. But the most important thing to come out of all of this was Marinette.
âLook how happy she looks,â Tikki said as they watched students pelt each other with rubber balls from their refuge under a cart.
âSee? Whatâd I tell you. Your owner hasnât had to worry about a thing since we started messing with Lila, and she hasnât been able to tell as many lies because sheâs too busy trying to figure out how her schemes keep getting thwarted,â Plagg said, crossing his arms over his chest. âYou should listen to me more often.â
âOh, you mean like that time we went to Italy and you ran into the-â
âI didnât see it!â Plagg huffed. âBesides, itâs famous for being crooked now, so I did them a favor.â
Tikki giggled, and Plaggâs ears flattened, his tail swishing back and forth. He tackled her to the ground, playfully jabbing the spots he knew were ticklish. The curse of knowing someone for eons was that they knew everything about you, but just like he knew all of her weaknesses, she knew all of his too. Like that scratching behind his left ear always incapacitated him.
âOkay, okay, truce! Truce!â He sighed as his limbs failed him.
The dodgeball game wore on above them, but in their moment of distraction, theyâd taken their eyes off Lila. The teams were diminishing swiftly, and seeing as Lila had most of the boys in the class entranced, sheâd managed to survive until the end. Kim and Nino were on her team leaving Ivan and Adrien on Marinetteâs side, and as Ivan moved to catch a ball Nino had thrown, he opened a clear shot at Marinette.
It was probably a harmless situation, and hitting the opposing team with the ball was the object of the game. Interfering was petty at best, but Tikki and Plagg didnât care. They tied her shoelaces together, and she stumbled forward, tossing the ball directly into Marinetteâs hands.
Mr. DâArgencourt blew his whistle to pause the game as Lila screeched from the ground. She glared down at her twined laces as everyone rushed to her side.
âArt thou alright?â Mr. DâArgencourt asked.
âNo! Someone tied my laces together,â she growled, but when she gestured to her feet, her laces were neatly tied into individual bows. âBut-â
âYou probably just tripped over your own two feet,â Nino said, giving her shoulder a pat.
âBut I swear my shoelaces were tied together just a second ago!â She said.
âBut weâve been watching you play this whole time just fine. Besides, how could anyone tie your shoelaces while you were running around?â Alya asked, and Lila sputtered to reply.
âMan, sheâs gonna give you a run for your money as the clumsiest person in class, Marinette,â Kim laughed, elbowing Marinetteâs side.
âStop,â she giggled, shoving him back as several of their classmates snickered.
âRegardless of the circumstances, Marinette caught your throw, so I hereby dub theeâŚout,â Mr. DâArgencourt said, gesturing Lila to the sidelines with the other eliminated players before blowing his whistle. âResume.â
With Lila out, Marinetteâs team was able to easily overtake Nino and Kim, securing their victory. To make matters better, it was Marinetteâs turn to clean up the dodgeballs after class, and Adrien volunteered to stay and help.
âYou didnât have to stay behind. Itâs breaktime,â Marinette said as Adrien stooped to pick up a ball.
âItâll get done faster if we work together,â Adrien said, tossing the ball into the cart. âBesides, I wanted to talk to you.â
âY-You wanted to talk to me?â She stammered, cheeks burning red.
âYeah, Lilaâs been acting weird lately, donât you think?â He said, opting to push the cart while she retrieved the balls.
âYeah, sheâs been trying to get me in trouble, but her plans keep backfiring somehow,â Marinette said with a smirk. âI think itâs karma catching up to her.â
âMaybe so, but I mean, come on. Did she really expect anyone to think you would ever cheat or steal?â
âUgh, I donât know what happened there, but Iâm glad it did.â
âMe too.â
Tikki and Plagg huddled together in the cart, masking their snickers behind tiny paws. Theyâd tell their owners eventually, but not today.

chapter's genre : fluff, suggestive (kinda??)
warnings : jisung being a protective cousin, playboy jaemin on your way
word count : 726 words
taglist : @kyuwoyo @wownajaemin @moon-jun (send an ask to be added!)
one - masterlist - three
âdonât even try jaemin hyungâ jisung warned him, as he saw him eyeing soonyoung
âwhat? I just asked who she isâ
âIt doesnât matter if you know her or not. just stay away from herâ jisung warned once again
âeyyy, that wonât stop me, blehâ jaemin playfully tease jisung
âyou can have all the girls that you want, just donât mess with my family. letâs go chenleâ jisung glared at him and went to his class with chenle following him.
among nct dream, sub-unit from nct, jisung, and chenle are the only ones who are hundred percent dedicated to their studies. as per renjun, jeno and mark, they tend to mess around. while haechan and jaemin, you never see them in class.
âbro, just stop whatever youâre planning. getting into a fight with jisung never ends well, you know thatâ mark reminds him, as he felt that jisung was pensive.
âand sheâs a family, you donât want to mess up with a family right?â jeno continues
âfamily? that makes it more exciting to play with herâ jaemin smirked as he went to where he usually goes, the janitorsâ room
haechan whistled after hearing jaeminâs words, proud of his friend
the rest can only shake their heads.
areum has been whining to soonyoung for almost fifteen minutes. feeling lazy to attend their training.
"did you seriously forget that you're talking to the captain right now?" soonyoung said, amused by the way her friend pouts at her.
"pouting won't help you to skip today's training"
"but I'm your friendddd"
"friend or not I won't let you, and as a captain, itâs my responsibility to keep my team on track, so stop whining. you don't want that haechan guy or whoever he is to see you like this right?"
hearing haechan's name, maddison suddenly jumped around soonyoung, squealing
"huh? what? what do you mean? I feel so energized for today's training cap!!"
soonyoung, who was used to her friend's antics, walked away leaving her alone in the locker room
the dreamers are walking down the hallway when they passed the school's gymnasium, seeing the two blue-colored doors, jisung who has a cold-faced suddenly revealed his adorable mochi smile and ran towards the gymnasium, wanting to see his dearest cousin
seeing their youngest ran, followed him. they might be the playboys of the campus, but jisung has them wrapped around his beautiful fingers. making them soft and careful around him. well maybe jaemin exceeds his limits sometimes
"noonaaaaaa"
"hey! don't hug me! I'm sweaty jisu-"
jisung purposely didn't listen to his cousin, wrapped his arms around her. soonyoung sigh in defeat.
while the cousins are having their moment, as usual, squealing and giggles can be heard as the boys entered the gymnasium. the said boys paid no attention to them as they stare at the cousins, who are still huggingÂ
"ji you can let go of me now"
"jisung says no"
"soonyoung says yes"
"jiji"
"no"
"park jisung"
"okay"
separating from each other, areum who is standing beside soon, started to blush that cause jisung to notice
"why is areum noona blushing?"
soonyoung glanced at the boys behind jisung saying, "her prince charming is here that's why"
areum gets flustered and hits soonyoung, "am not"
"psh, keep saying that to yourself. we'll just continue training ji, you and your friends can watch"
jisung smiled at that and was about to reply when she continued
"but no funny business, understand?"
"yes ma'am" jisung winked at her
looking at the rest of the nct dream, soonyoung nods at them as a greeting and pulled areum towards the court. the boys settled themselves on the bleachers of the gymnasium, following soonyoungâs order. as the girls get back to training, they watched them surprisingly peacefully.
shouts, squeaking of shoes, and the ball hitting the floor were all heard in the gymnasium. the team gave their efforts every training until now. which makes soonyoung very proud of her team. hours had passed and soonyoung decided to end the training for the day, on behalf of their coach who attended an important meeting.
as the girls were cooling down, drinking their water, planning for the next training. eyes can't help but stare at the volleyball team's captain. he was known for being a cold, heartless, merciless boy. but what's with soonyoung that makes him feel soft?
reblogs and feedbacks are highly appreciated!

Chapter Three 2.0
We are mid week four, you guys.
My mental health is definitely in a much better place than it was last week, so Iâm super thankful. I tried to cut myself some slack on completing giant projects Iâd swashbuckled myself in to week one and swapped for family facetimes and not feeling the burden to output so much in this quarantine.
Learn Spanish! Learn piano. Do Insanity! Start your blog! Set up your studio. Write songs. Record them! Organize the nooks and crevices that have years of dust and memories on them.Â
Bleh. I burnt myself out within the first week and slowly started to trail offâŚwhich then led to some insanely lazy days where the most I did was walk from my bed downstairs to the couch.
Did I schedule so many goals because I saw opportunity? Or because of my anxiety about feeling inadequate in this time âof opportunity?â
As much as Iâd like to say the first, Iâm starting to think itâs the latter. Iâve been so 180, because itâs hard to be driven in a time where your days are loose and you have no idea when life will return to normal again.Â
Why would I work myself into the ground as if I had to, per usual, even though those goals were either way overdue or continuations of what Iâd wanted anyway? I say a time âof opportunity,â but that isnât meant to be insensitive. For me, it just means finally having actual TIME to do anything other than the work that was always in front of me.
Yet, I set myself up for failure, throwing myself in to it all at once like that. But thatâs how Iâve always been, either fully in it or not!Â
For example, I bought this GIANT calendar where I wrote out what workout we were doing each day, how many chapters of Spanish we were going to accomplish, when we went to the store, etc. I had a food journal. I was organized! I was set!
I hate crossing things off my calendar so I always push to achieve what Iâd planned for the day, even when I overbook myself. Now and before, Iâd plan my days for max productivity, set out hour by hour, but then get frustrated when my timing fell off even by 30 minutes. Or frustrated when Iâd snooze my alarm too late to accomplish everything I had planned, making my day feel wasted.
Half of the time, I find my days feel like they fall short because I canât seem to brush off the minutiae and plan for the light at the end of the tunnel.
Hence, my limbo.
Thatâs a lot. Especially in this time, itâs the perfect remedy to drive yourself insane. Thereâs only so much you can do from the confines of your home. Thereâs no need to demand work from yourself unless it is necessary or inspired.
However, the opposite where thereâs no desire to do anything at all âbecause whyâ can be equally as dangerous.
Setting goals for yourself and a daily or weekly plan is super important for your sanity, even just to keep track of time. Iâve found days that Iâve woken up without even a minor to-do seem to lack purpose and care. The day flies by, I purposefully note the day as a âthrow away,â and before I know it Iâm disappointed at my lack of productivity.
While you donât need to psycho-plan by the minute like me, and I should really chill out on that in this time, feeling purposeful is crucial to a positive day! Of course, everyoneâs situations are different and everyone is struggling in different ways so what is possible for one isnât for the other. But no project should be deemed too small. Regardless, it feels nice to see things start to finish in this time where we can only control whatâs in the confines of our homes (if even that)!
Take out that old journal or planner with all your 2020 goals in it and see what you can still accomplish amongst all this calamity. Some of my goals made me laugh with how frivolous they seemed. Some still held weight. But while they made me feel bittersweet about how Iâd wanted this year to go, I was happy to revisit them.Â
Things are still possible. They may just need more time now, or an extra push. Regardless, itâs a time to turn inward and work on yourself. Youâll be happier you stayed on track at least a little when this is all over, because even though we have no idea when this will end, it WILL and we WILL get back out there!
Conversely, while itâs definitely important to have some semblance of a schedule so you keep on track for your goals, you also gotta cut yourself some slack. Things donât need to be done as fast as they can. We are in a pandemic. Itâs okay to not rush, it doesnât mean youâre not a go-getter. Itâs okay to allow yourself some off days, especially when your emotions run rampant and you need to displace yourself for a second.
Itâs okay to be still. To reflect. Grieve. Just be.
I think thatâs what has the potential to be eye-opening about this situation. There are ways to achieve and succeed without running yourself in to the ground. There are ways to improve not on a tightrope, but with comfortable easygoingness.Â
Iâd love to implement that balance now and forever. Not too much, or too little, but juuuuust right.
And the Spanish-speaking, piano-playing, singer-songwriter? She could definitely surface after all this. But for now, thereâs no rush. <3

Agent of Shield - Chapter 2
Summary: You are a relatively new agent at Shield, but not a field agent, apparently that is about to change when you meet the Avengers and they realize you are a valuable asset
Word count:2259
PREVIOUS CHAPTER
I wake up Sunday morning around 5am, I canât remember the last time I slept for a full 8 hours like that, but I feel so refreshed that I hop right up and head to the kitchen. Â Checking my phone while my coffee brews, I see a text from my dad just before midnight last night. Â
Pops: Pumpkin, how was your day? Â I hadnât heard from you, Iâm sure you are staying busy. Â Hopefully made it to the shelter today and found yourself a new companion. Â
Y/N: Good morning Colonel! Â I was in bed much earlier than you apparently. Â Iâll call you after my run this morning, love you
I sit down sipping my coffee and grab a protein bar before heading back in my room to change to my favorite leggings and tank.  I used to hate running, but after moving to NYC, watching the sunrise as I jog through Central Park makes my day so much better, I canât imagine missing it even once. This morning Iâm a bit earlier than usual and get a chance to take the longer route through the park.  The sunrise is as beautiful as ever and adds a calming effect that I crave in this crazy world.  I decide to treat myself this morning and swing by my favorite coffee shop while heading down Central Park West.  As I step into the shop my phone rings and I answer without looking at the caller id. âColonel, I told you I would call you when I got home, whatâs making you so impatient this morning?âÂ
I state with fake annoyance. Â âuh, Agent Miller?â I hear in response, ok, thatâs definitely not my dad. Â âYea, who is this? Â And how did you get this number?â I respond as I finally look at the caller id and see itâs a blocked number. Â With a soft chuckle they respond âthis is Steve Rogers; Director Fury gave me your number. Â I didnât intend on calling you this early, but we received some new communications late last night and hoping you are available to translate for us again.â Â Wow, he even sounds handsome, how is that possible. Â âOh, hi, yes of course I can help. Â Iâm on the upper west side right now, I can be at the tower in 15 minutes, but I just finished a run and Iâm kind of disgusting.â Â Why did you just say that, you idiot? âThat would be great, the quicker we can get this resolved, the better. Â Should we send a car for you?â he asks. Â âNo, Iâm good. Â Iâm picking up coffee, do you need any?â Seriously? What is wrong with me? Itâs like I hear his voice and turn into an imbecile. Â âNo, but thank you for the offer, see you soon.â he replies before disconnecting the call. I grab my coffee and start heading toward mid-town when I look down and realize what Iâm wearing, not only is the word Juicy across my ass, but my tank reads âIâm not a rapper, I just cuss a lotâ. I laugh at how ridiculous I feel for being worried about what Iâm wearing, I should be worried about the sweat thatâs beginning to dry on my skin, bleh.
I arrive at the tower just as a security guard is unlocking the door for me. âGood morningâ I chirp trying to sound as professional as possible while looking like a huge mess. âThey are expecting you in the conference room on the 25th floor, use the first elevator on the leftâ he responds barely looking up, apparently, heâs not a morning person. Â âThanksâ I smile as I head toward the elevators. Â âNice outfitâ he smirks as I walk into the elevator. Â Well, this should be interesting. Walking down the hall I get an eerie flashback from yesterdayâs recordings and try to calm myself to focus on the task and not get too overwhelmed. Â That worked for almost a full 5 minutes before you walk into the conference room to find Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson dressed in sweats and t-shirts. Â A girl could die happy here! Deep breath and donât make an ass of yourself! âGood morning gentlemen, Iâm glad you got the dress code memoâ I say as I enter the room. Â âGlad you could make it on such short notice, Agent Miller, this is Sam Wilson. Sam, this is Agent Miller, she is helping us with our translatingâ Steve smiles as he introduces me. Â âItâs a pleasure to meet you Mr. Wilson, please call me Y/N.â âWell, you can call me Sam, and Iâm glad none of us overdressed this morning.â he responds as you move closer to the conference room table. Â âNormally, I would have put a bit more effort into my appearance, but I was finishing my run through the park when you called.â I smile and try to calm my nerves. Â âItâs 645 in the morning and you were finishing your run?â he asks with a bit of shock. Â I nod my head and grab a pen and paper off the table. âGeez, your worst than Cap! Wait, what park are you running through in the middle of the night?â he asks with a raised eyebrow and has now caught the attention of Steve, who seems more interested in the conversation now. Â âUm, Central Park and itâs not the middle of the night, I didnât get there until almost 530â you say nonchalantly. Â The are both now looking at you like you have 3 heads. Â âWhat? Growing up, I was the lazy one still in bed at 6am. Â And I like watching the sunrise, itâs a good way to start your day. Â So, you have another conversation to translate?â Â you add quickly trying to change the subject. Â
âYes, we received a few early this morning, or I guess last night is a better time frame. Anyway, there are a few bits and pieces here and there. Â Hopefully they have more info for us, but anything we can get will help us at this point.â Steve responds. Â âActually, how are your typing skills? Â There are about 15 different recordings so I was hoping you might be able to type them up as you translate.â he adds looking at you hopeful. Â âI think Iâm around 90 wpm, so that shouldnât be an issueâ âGreat, Iâll grab the laptop and you can get startedâ he claps Sam on the back as he heads out the door. Â Sam looks you over as if heâs trying to solve a riddle. Â âYou ok?â I ask. Â âIâm assuming you came from a military family if 6am made you the lazy one, am I right?â he asks with a knowing smile. Â âYes, my dad is a marine, and both of my brothers joined after college, one in the Navy and one in the Air Forceâ you smile realizing that Sam probably knows your dad and your brothers even if he hasnât figured it out yet. Â Steve comes back in the room, walking up behind you with the laptop and you realize that heâs now probably read your ass and you are trying your best to not crawl under the table in embarrassment. Â âOk, here is everything you should need. Â The files are in the desktop folder with todayâs date. Â Thanks again for putting your life on hold to help us out.â Â Steve says as he sets the laptop down in front of you. Â You relax just from his kind words and smile at him, âitâs my pleasure, Steveâ.
You begin working and do your best to not stare and drool over the gorgeous men in the room. Â Just as you are about to begin your next recording, the buildings AI FRIDAY alerts Steve of a call coming in for you. Â You look up confused and shrug your shoulders, no one knows you are here. Â Then you hear Director Furyâs voice loud and clear. âSorry to interrupt the party going on over there, but Agent Miller? Â Would you like to explain why Colonel Miller is calling me at this hour on a Sunday morning?â he states sounding as irritated as ever. Â âThatâs probably because he loves you and misses you.â You respond flatly. âOk, thatâs probably only part of the reason, I was supposed to call him when I was done with my run and I got sidetracked. Â Be a dear and cover for me?â you respond hoping that Nick is in a good mood and willing to help you out. Â Sam is looking at Steve utterly confused, to which Steve just shrugs and shakes his head, laughing at how you seem completely comfortable around Fury and not at all intimidated like everyone else in SHIELD. Â âHow about you tell him yourself?â he responds before you hear a beep and your dad starting to talk. âPumpkin, are you there?â Â You hang your head embarrassed even more than you thought was possible for one day and youâve only been awake for a little over 2 hours at this point. âHi dad, Iâm so sorry I didnât call you, but Iâm at work right now and I will call you as soon as Iâm done, I promise.â You begin bargaining knowing full well it will get you no where but hoping he will take mercy on you. Â âWhat are you having for breakfast?â he responds. Â Your shoulders slump knowing this is only going to get worst. Â Steve looks at you a little confused as to the question. Ok, I might as well get this over, if I donât play along with his silly games then this is only going to become more humiliating. âIâm having pineapples covered in guacamoleâ you respond hoping Sam and Steve arenât paying attention. Â You then look up and know they heard but the confused and disgusted expressions on their faces. Â âAlright, thatâs good. Â Now explain yourself.â he responds, and you take a deep breath. Â âDad, I was finishing my run and got called into work. Iâm here now but have a bit more work to do, I promise I will call you the minute Iâm done and headed home.â Â âFine, I wasnât expecting to see you at the Stark tower at this time of the morning and assumed your body was discarded in the dumpster, that would be the only reason .you hadnât called and didnât answer my calls.â âOld man, you are so dramaticâ you say with a smirk âand Iâm sorry, it wonât happen again.â Â âGood, bye Pumpkin.â Â
The call disconnects and you look at Sam and Steve hoping that you can get back to translating but knowing by the looks on their faces they have a lot of questions. âWhat the hell was that?â Sam asks trying to understand the conversation you just had with your dad. Â âThat was my dad, heâs a bit overprotective and paranoidâ you respond hoping that would explain enough. Â âWait, your dad is Colonel Miller, as in Colonel Joseph Miller?â he asks. You nod and smile, you love your dad, but he had a reputation of being a big mean Marine, which he could be if he wanted to, but he never was with you, he was a giant teddy bear that worried about you more than necessary. Â âAnd your breakfast choice?â Steve asked, still quite confused by what just happened. âOh, thatâ I respond âwhen we were younger, my dad started this thing so that we could relay to him if we were in danger or kidnapped. Â He asks about what we are eating and the most ridiculous or gross thing you answer means you are fine. Â If I had answered pancakes, then he would know that Iâm in danger, if I add eggs, then Iâve been injured. Â If I add bacon itâs by someone I know, itâs crazy, and has only been used in innocent situations like today, but like I said heâs paranoid and overprotectiveâ I shrug and smile at the guys. Â Itâs one of the things that made you love your dad, a thousand miles away and still making sure you are protected no matter what. Â Steve looks at you with his brow furrowed âthatâs kind of genius.â Â I nod âyea, heâs good like thatâ I respond. âWait, if heâs your dad, then Joshua and Jacob are your brothers?â Sam asks like he just figured everything out. I nod and smile âYes, they are, and I apologize for anything they did that got you in trouble, thatâs kind of their specialty.â Â âAre you kidding? Â Jacob was my saving grace in the Air Force, he is a bad ass and one of the best airmen Iâve ever known!â Sam explains with a huge smile on his face. Â âWell, Iâm glad, he would like to here that, he was medically discharged a few years ago after breaking his shoulder and it not healing as quickly as it should have. Â He actually just started working with the Secret Service and finally feeling like himself again.â I tell him. Â âWow, thatâs incredible. Â I would love to catch up with him. Â What about Josh? Â Is he still sailing?â he asks. Â âYes, heâs on the west coast, San Diego or maybe Seattle. Â Iâm not sure, he moves around a lot.â I respond. Â âWell, now that we are all caught up, Sam, can you check the data that just came in? Â Hopefully, we can get through this info and still enjoy the rest of our dayâ Steve says thoughtfully as he looks between you and Sam. Â âOf courseâ I respond and go back to the recordings.Â

CHAPTER ONE: FIRST SIGHT
AKA, blessed fucknuggets, why do these fools feel the need to put themselves through high school, my sources tell me that the US school system isnât all that to begin with, what gives?
PREVIOUS ENTRIES
(Warning: this got long. Looooong. Hence, cut, so that I donât murder your dash like Edward doesnât murder Bella in this chapter.)
Welcome to the first entry of a live-read that no one asked for, in which Iâll go through the first chapter of Midnight Sun, i.e. a retelling of the first Twilight book from Edward Cullenâs POV. Not to be confused with Grey, a retelling of the first volume of a Twilight fanfic with the serial numbers filed off, or the Life and Death edition, a retelling of the first Twilight book in which Bella Swan is genderbent into a dude called Beau, who utters the immortal line âI knew I must look like a gorilla on a greyhound.â Which still tickles my humerus to this day.
Iâve waited for this novel to drop so long that at some point Iâd stopped waiting. If by some freaky turn of chance you stumbled on this without knowing about the hoopla surrounding the publication, hereâs a Wikipedia link. The gist is that the first few chapters of the WIP got leaked, the author got upset, the book got shelved until ??? and no further information about it was forthcoming until a while ago, when out of the blue arrive the news that itâs getting released in August.
My first thought was âOh, yay, something actually NICE is happening this year!â
My second thought was âPlease let it be good, so that I can laugh outrageously at [name redacted] for mocking my enjoyment of this series!â And. Look. I know whatâs said about Twilight with regards to its literary merit and Stephenie Meyerâs abilities as a writer. A lot of it is admittedly accurate. However, the metrics by which I measure the value of a book are a) did it entertain me? and b) did I gain anything by having read it? And yeah, those are personal and subjective items, but objectivity is a lie, Jesus enjoys using toasters to take selfies, and if ten years ago I hadnât been looking for a place to post my 50k+ epic Renesmee-centric fanfic, I wouldnât have met the people who are currently my best friends.
Which is to say: Iâm too attached to this series to give a fig what color the prose is. Deal.
And yet. Me hoping that Midnight Sun would be good, in a way that people who donât have my level of emotional investment might acknowledge, wasnât⌠that farfetched?  Because the last book Meyer released before this one, The Chemist? Is an improvement on all her previous work. A huge improvement! Itâs competently written! The characters read like they were intended to be flawed, messy people.
The main romance isnât the kind of fucked up that Bella and Edwardâs is, where you can pen treatises on why theyâre omg so unhealthy. Itâs the kind of fucked up where five seconds after meeting her love interest, the protagonist drugs him unconscious, kidnaps him, sticks a urinary catheter up his ding dong, straps him to a table and tortures him for information until the guyâs ex-CIA identical twin drops a plane on the barn theyâre in and crashes through the ceiling all âHANDS OFF MY BABY BROTHER YOU DISCOUNT MATA HARI!â
Then they all make friends and go on a road trip together because a shady government organization is after them.
Thatâs not a fucked-up relationship that you write an essay analyzing the fucked-up-ness of. Itâs something you stare at, stunned and, if youâre me, torn between thinking âHoly shit, this is so my brand of heroine!!!â and âHow much crack was Auntie Steph on when she wrote this?â And itâs beautiful. I want ten more like it. So my hopes for Midnight Sun are tempered by the knowledge that, being a retelling of an established narrative, it canât go all-out with the batshit. But Iâm still optimistic that some part of it will give me that warm âAwww, youâve come a long way from where we first met, author! Good on you!â feeling.
Now letâs (finally!) get started on the chapter proper.
âŚoh wait thereâs an authorâs note.
âŚuhm. Yeah. My dreams. About those. *fixed stare at faraway bonfire* Actually, letâs not talk about those and just move on to Edward Not Liking High School, thank you. Yeah. Thatâs good.
Edward Cullen doesnât like high school. Edward doesnât like that people think. Edward doesnât like that the human student body is beside itself with the arrival of some new chick. Edward thinks his adopted siblings are super basic. (Rosalie = shallow, Emmett = simple, Jasper = psycho two seconds away from jumping off his chair and going on a rampage.) We donât get to hear his utterly unbiased assessment of Alice, because she butts in and starts a one-sided telepathic convo about how Jasper is two seconds away from jumping off his chair and going on a rampage. You know. Normal sibling stuff.
WHY DO YOU PUT YOURSELF THROUGH THIS HASSLE, WHY!
(Let me take this opportunity to share my pet crack theory that Carlisle Cullen is secretly the most twisted, evil vampire in all of vampiredom, and that the sending the young ones to high school bit is something he does solely because he gets his evil fix by feasting on the emotional toil it inflicts on them. Also why heâs a doctor; he can ignore the call of blood, because being surrounded by the pain of patients and their loved ones already keeps him fed. I mean. He was chilling with the Volturi way back when, and Aro gives off a handsy vibe. No way he didnât get his mind read in every which way, and if that happened - if he were reaaaalllyyyyy that nice, why would he still ping them as a threat of any kind?)
(This has holes in it, I know. And clashes with my other pet crack theory, which posits that the whole immortal child/Letâs Catch Them All: Cullen Edition was in fact the fallout of a Very Bad Italian Breakup, with Aro being the pissy ex who wants sole custody of the kids.)
Whatever. It still makes more sense than them going through âthe inert state between active periodsâ when. My dudes! College is right there. Some places you can even sit out 90% of lectures and still get your diploma if you donât feel like faking one, so Jasper would be all set! And you can pick different subjects! Diversify! Why must it always be med school rehashes, there are other worthy professions! And whole fields that are useless for getting-a-job purposes, but still interesting and enriching for those who have the luxury to pursue them. Let Emmett do Viking Studies, for fuckâs sake!
This amuses me much more than it rightfully should. Iâm a child.
The Cullen clan tries to pep talk Jasper into not getting his murder on. Jasper is like OMG WILL YOU GUYS LAY OFF, while Edward is busy doing his judgy Edward thing and thinking to himself that Jasper should accept his limitations, that itâs a bad idea to have him at school at all, blah blah bleh, and you know what, Iâm with you there, Ed.
Although we all know that this is just setup for the irony that will ensue as soon as Bella the Delicious klutzes her way into his line of smell.
Oh yah! Enter Bella. Edward canât hear her thoughts. Jessica Stanley is a b-word. Edward wonders whether not being able to butt into the new girlâs head may be a red flag for vampire Alzheimer. Biology class next! The teacher is a man âof no more than average intellectâ and, lord. Itâs lucky that Edward is the mind reader in the family, because imagine if it were one of the others and they had to put up with listening to him bitch about the world at large, nonstop, at all hours of the day. And night, since these guys donât sleep. Angela Webber is the only soul in the whole school whose thoughts have the Edward Cullen seal of approval. I feel sorry for her. I also feel this weird sense of hey, this all seems familiar in senses other than being a retelling, have I been here before?
Wait.
WAAAIIIIIITEEEEE.
*googles for the old version*
*runs first chapters through copyleaks*
*kubrick stare* MEYER, YOU LAZY SO AND SO, HOW COULD YOU!
*slams head on desk*
Well. At least I know what Iâm in for. HONESTLY! Itâs been. Itâs been THIS MANY YEARS since the leaked version appeared, and that was a first draft, how in the⌠sheâs way better than this, now! Was this novel produced in a terminal state of $#%CARING#NOT?&FOUND?! Is half of it just going to be the same old thing with a thin veneer of polish? Iâm.
*sigh* You know what, Iâm okay. Weâre just going to call this first part a re-read. Itâs been ten years, so I remember not a whole lot of the specifics, so at least I wonât be bored. BUT COME CHAPTER 13 I EXPECT TO BE SWEPT OFF MY FEET, DO YOU HEAR ME?!
Biology. Bella walks in right past a fan and gives Edward a throbbing throat boner. How awkward. Then she goes and sits right next to him and saucily tosses her hair around like heâs not actively plotting her murder and that of the rest of the class. The cheek of the thing!
Fortunately, Bellaâs tasty ass is momentarily saved by a stiff breeze.
âŚI think we may have found the solution to Jasperâs control issues. The Cullens just need to start carrying air freshener around and spray the murder out of him every time he starts looking peckish. It would look weird if anyone else did it, but since theyâre all pretty and rich, itâs more likely that the trend will catch on and cause Febreze sales to skyrocket.
Anyway. Weâre not done victim-blaming Bella forâŚ
âŚat least another couple of pages, but at least Edward gets his head out of his ass long enough to recall that hey, vampire! Oxygen is optional! But he still spends another lot of words grumbling about what a hassle it is to be forced to hold his breath in order to dampen his murderous urges. This is why you are a virgin, Edward. No, I donât mean the planning the assassination a classmateâs assassination, plenty of serial killers still manage to get laid heaps, consensually, even! Itâs the fact that youâre this much of a buzzkill thatâs the issue.
Live, laugh, love, you dumbass disco ball!
Yep, heâs still on about how heâs going to kill her, totes kill her, he feral dangerous vampire, rawr. The miracle of adequate indoor airflow only got him to railroad a quartet of brain cells into thinking up smarter ways of snuffing Bella out. Now he wants to lure her to the forest. No, heâs going to kill her at home! He hates her! No, he hates himself and is projecting!
So he flees to his car, plays some calming music, breathes in and out and thinks about his family and how disappointed theyâd be in him if he were to help himself to a Swan shake. Well, Iâm nobody to shit talk anyoneâs self-soothing routine. Iâd probably throw in a truck of food + a bath, but heâs had 100+ years to figure out what coping mechanisms work for him, so letâs just let him do his-
Edward.
EDWARD.
âŚdo you actually think this is an appropriate time to start a ginger-off with some random desk lady? Yes, we know youâre the One True Redhead To Rule Them All. (Though Kvothe from Name of the Wind may beg to differ, and I donât know who would win that fight.) I mean, really? You pull this crap when you just barely talked yourself out of a murder? And then you call her eyes flat! What!
One of my favorite comic book series, Y the Last Man, features a scene where two characters discuss what it is that truly binds people together. One of them presents the argument that stronger bonds are formed not by shared love, but by shared hates. By which they mean not a kiss-kiss-slap-slap, enemies-to-lovers relationship dynamic, but like⌠you, being someone who really hates coleslaw, having a partner who likewise hates coleslaw, with whom you can indulge in tireless verbal roastings of coleslaw and who will never get tired of your complaining, because the fire of their loathing burns every bit as hot as yours.
Iâve always felt that this concept resonated with me deeply. And if you apply it to Bella and Edward, by its standards, they have the real deal. Go through the namesake chapter in Twilight-the-book, and you find Bella thinking similarly judgy thoughts, being irked by the same shit that no one normal would bat an eye to, going âUgh!â and âGah!â at everything that makes Edward wince internally. So their love will be eternal for sure. Perhaps not in an epic way. Theyâll live boringly ever after, until theyâre ancient and onion-skinned and lurking at passerby humans through the geraniums on their windowsill, exchanging âHoly crow, I canât believe she bought a hydrogen engine car just to show off!â / âAwful! She should know that thinning the deer population so that they produce less flatulence is the most sound way of controlling toxic emissions!â And then probably gazing at one another like idiots for an ice age or two.
Edward wants to be moved out of Biology class. Goes back and forth with the desk lady, who obviously wants to tap that, because of course she does. Every hot-blooded woman within spitting distance must crave his alluring icicle, even as he mentally eviscerates every minuscule detail of their appearance.
Except Bella, because sheâs soft, translucent, deep-eyed and edible. And, I mean. You can complain all you want about âyouâre different from anyone else Iâve ever met, youâre SPECIAL, better, more beautiful, more everything!â being a dead horse of a trope so old and beaten that by all rights it should have turned to smelly glue, but. That pony is still kicking. And by kicking, I mean selling. And it sells because being made to feel special, even if itâs happening by proxy while youâre immersed into the thoughts of a fictional character, is nice. Readers enjoying that experience and seeking out fiction that provides it shouldnât be considered so⌠mock-worthy as Iâve seen it be, in discussion of works that feature the trope prominently.
Which doesnât mean that it wouldnât be nicer if Edwardâs narration were focused solely on elevating Bella, instead of also viciously kicking down everyone in the vicinity. Man, we get the message, okay? You donât need to act like youâve swallowed a Simon Cowell before coming in for school.
I swear, itâs almost a relief when Bella interrupts, heralding the triumphant return of the throat boner. Edwardâs thoughts about the people around him are actually LESS gratuitously bitchy when heâs contemplating how to best murder them.
At least this time he is able to extract himself from the situation and flee speedily. (Which⌠in Biology, what exactly was preventing him from asking for a bathroom break? Or just saying he was feeling poorly and getting the fuck out of there?)
He meets the sibs. Only Alice has any clue of what is going on because visions, and she doesnât explain anything to the others, who just stand there baffled while Edward decides to get his shiny ass in his shiny Volvo and run off to Alaska. Probably because it would ruin the serious mood of the scene if she told them and Jasper started doing happy cartwheels at the prospect of no longer being the only fuckup in the family.
END CHAPTER. Same time tomorrow, hopefully, and Iâll TRY to be less longwinded. Try.Â

things I need to do (GW2-related)
engage with the community more somehow, Iâve barely done anything but babble into the void since everyone I followed left tumblr and most people I played with became inactive, and the lack of interesting stuff on my dash (or guild chat) is a vicious cycle
write that damned short story thatâs been in my head, itâs not like itâs more than one chapter, I can do it, I just, am lazy, and when I try to write stuff, it doesnât come out right, and bleh...I think Iâm preaching to the choir cause I mean this is fucking tumblr lol
also I have a medium-sized list of achievements that are easy but tedious so Iâve left them alone when I couldâve been done by now if I started then, so maybe I should work on that

Chapter 67: Message Received
AFRRS, LGKUQ, FRBSGR, MBR TSAUI GDCA B RWKMZ HUSOFI UB GCBCW WTS KNJTK YBCB GIE WEDHV'F EEEMES HB DUL LQFGRMF XVAA DNJNXYX HWRT
It was an absolutely perfect summer evening. The low-arching sun splashed its warm, dying light across the vast grassy fields, casting long yet lofty shadows that almost seemed to dance across the barnâs weathered surface. A light, gentle breeze skimmed over the acres of farmland, as cricket songs began to echo throughout the hills, even as far as the open, forested valley where Gravity Falls sat far below. And this picturesque view was what the Gems were silently, contentedly enjoying, happy to have a much-earned momentâs rest after a long day at work on the drill. Though Ford had kept to the barn to work on a few odds and ends during this evening break, the kids readily joined in on it as they reclined up against Lion, easily relaxing as Steven strummed a pleasant tune on his ukulele. The trio would have been more than happy to let this peaceful scene continue for as long as possible, but of course, it all too quickly came to an end thanks to the interruption from a certain miffed green Gem.
âAhemâŚâ Peridot huffed as she stood over the kids. Her hands were positioned on her hips, a power drill clenched tightly in her grip from the work she was clearly intent on continuing.
âOh, hi, Peridot!â Steven greeted her blithely.
âWelp, I knew this was too good to be true,â Dipper sighed sardonically as he sat up a bit. âWhat do you want, Peridot?â
âI want to know why we stopped working on the drill!â the green Gem scowled impatiently, nodding over to the Gems still watching the sunset several feet away. âWhy are they just sitting there looking at nothing!?â
âAw, Peri, weâre all just taking a nice little break,â Mabel grinned brightly.
ââŚA what?â
âWeâve all been working hard and we deserve to take it easy for a bit,â Steven explained. âI mean, just look at that view. Itâs beautiful!ââ
âItâs going to be blown to oblivion by the Cluster if we donât get back to work!â Peridot countered crossly.
âYeesh, tell us something we donât know for a change,â Dipper remarked with something of a wry, knowing smirk.
âWorking hard is important,â Steven added, still smiling calmly. âBut feeling good is important too!â
âYep,â Mabel soundly agreed. âLooks like you still need to learn about one more super important Earth concept, Peri. Itâs called⌠âtreat yo selfâ!â
âWhat are you talking about?!â Peridot fussed, thoroughly annoyed as she accidentally turned the power drill on.
âHey!â Steven perked up upon hearing the buzzing drill. âWhat is that, a C?â The young Gem copied the noise on his ukulele, strumming a simple C chord that did, in fact, mimic the buzzing of the drill itself. Â
âThe drill?â Peridot raised a confused eyebrow, looking to the tool in her hand.
âYeah!â Steven nodded, rising to his feet as Peridot pressed the drill up to an even faster speed. Or rather, an even higher note. âOh my gosh! Now its music!â
âWhoa! It sorta is!â Mabel gasped, amazed.
âOnly Steven could hear music in something like a power drill,â Dipper chuckled, amused.
ââMusicâ?â Peridot asked. âWhatâs that?â
âWhaaaaa?! You donât know what music is?!â Mabel exclaimed, aptly baffled. âOh, girl, you are missing out!â
âLook, its like this,â Steven positioned his ukulele before strumming out a simple scale and singing along. âDo, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do!â
âDo, mi, so, doâŚ?â Peridot repeated, clearly not following.
âIsnât it pretty?â the young Gem sang, still singing along.
âThatâs exceedingly simple,â the green Gem snarked, though she still mused on the beguiling process all the same. âDo, mi, so, itâŚâ
âWeâre making music.â
âWhatâs the point?â Peridot said, crossing her arms.
âThe point, is⌠its fun!â Mabel chimed in, singing a bright note of her own in tune with Stevenâs strumming.
âBut why even bother?â the green Gem shook her head. âYouâre not even making anything!â
âWell, if it isnât anything, then why does it sound so good?â Steven asked with a good-natured shrug.
âI suppose its just interest, do, mi, so, do,â Peridot theorized as the young Gem kept his lighthearted tune going. âDevoid of substance or purpose, a hypothetical pattern⌠do, mi, so, ti⌠For the satisfaction of bringing it to completion!â
ââŚSure,â Steven agreed, even if he didnât really know what she was talking about.
âShould we tell her music isnât usually that deep?â Dipper asked Mabel, aside.
âEh, let her have her sciencey fun,â Mabel shrugged.
âDo, mi, so, it⌠Interest without meaning?â Peridot posed, surprised by such an odd train of thought. One that largely went against everything she had ever known back on Homeworld, much like everything else on Earth as a whole. âSolutions without problemsâŚ?â
âAnd then you just add words,â Steven said, gearing up for a proper song. âHereâs what Iâve been working on. Life and death and love and birth and peace and war on the planet Earth.â The melody was light and bouncy, carrying a message of the immense complexities and contradictions of the planet it was about, a theme that was not lost on Mabel, Dipper, or even Peridot as they all listened intently. âIs there anything thatâs worth more than peace and love on the planet Earth, oh-whoooa, come on and sing it with me!â
âSing?â Peridot repeated, still completely lost.
âThe words relate to the key!â
âKey?!â the green Gem asked, even more baffled as she held a small key she had found in the barn up.
âIf itâs a pattern, if itâs a pattern, than just repeat after me,â Steven encouraged, nodding over to the twins in the hopes that theyâd do the same. Mabel was quick to jump on the offer first as she joined the young Gem in a brief duet. âLife and death and love and birth-â
âL-Life and death and love and birth,â Peridot attempted, albeit a bit shakily. After all, she had never really sung before, and until now, she had never had a reason to.
âCâmon, bro-bro, join in!â Mabel urged her brother in an excitable whisper. âOur plan is working!â
âFirst of all, you guys didnât start this whole music thing off with any sort of âplanâ,â Dipper retorted before finally breaking down into a small, if not somewhat flustered smile. âB-but, fine, just this once.â
âNow, you sing mi, fa, mi, mi, fa, mi, ti, la!â Steven instructed Peridot, who followed along easy enough as all four of them finished the chorus on a high, harmonious note.
âAnd peace and war on the planet Earth!â
âAhhh! That sounded so good!â Mabel cheered happily. âLooks like its time to bring Love Patrol Alpha outta retirement with its brand new member, Peri!â
âI have no idea what thatâs supposed to mean,â Peridot remarked dryly. âBut what I do know is that was so easy,â she finished, as if suspicious by that fact.
âYeah, but thatâs whatâs so fun about it!â Steven nodded, still strumming. âYou should write somethingâyou should write a song!â
âAbout what?â
âWhatever youâre thinking!â
While Peridot still didnât largely understand the functional purpose of music or songs, she decided to take the young Gem up on this challenge and do exactly that. Making use of the rhyming patterns and lyrical progression similar to Stevenâs song, the green Gem spent the rest of the evening crafting out her tune. A tune that, once it reached what she believed to be a satisfactory standard, she decided to present to not just the kids, but the other Gems and Ford as well that night around the fire.
âI guess weâre already here,â she began, standing before the collective group as they all listened in, intrigued and also slightly confused by the green Gem, of all people, suddenly bursting into song. âI guess we already know. Weâve all got something to fear, weâve all got nowhere to go-â
Admittedly, the message of her melody was a bit disconcerting, or at least it was to the Gems as it reminded them of the dire straits they were up against when it came to the Cluster. Still, Steven, Mabel, and even Dipper nodded Peridot their silent encouragement as she carried on with the rest of her undoubtably passionate preformance.
âI think youâre all INSANE!â she accused truthfully. For certainly, a group of Gems and humans so dedicated to preserving a planet as bizarre and outlandish as Earth had to be out of their right minds. But then again, Peridot couldnât claim to be much better, given the same goal they were all working towards together. âBut I guess I am too⌠Anybody would be if they were stuck on Earth with you!â
A round of genuinely amused chuckles from the others followed suit, one that Peridot couldnât help but take pride over, especially as Mabel and Steven both cheered her on even further. On Homeworld, such a display of pointless, aimless expression would have been scoffed off at best, punishable for at worst. But here, on Earth, this sort of thing was welcome, accepted, commonplace even. It was so strange, so unlike anything the green Gem had ever known that she couldnât help but appreciate it all in some odd way. Because here, there were no expectations or set standards about what a Gem, or a human for that matter, could do or be. Here, anyone could do or say or think anything they wanted. Here, anyone and, at least as far as sheâd seen, everyone was free.
âLife and death and love and birth and-â
Peridot remained slightly mystified by this newfound revelation as the next several days carried on, progress on the drill going sound and steady. The large number of hands on the project certainly made the work much lighter for everyone, as they all had their assigned tasks to carry out in inching towards its completion.
âLife and death and love and birth and-â
Over the course of the drillâs construction, Peridot had largely formed a steady rapport with all of the members of her once-tentative alliance. Amethyst was likely the first among these new bonds she had formed among the Crystal Gems at least. The purple Gem was, at least in her opinion, crass and loud and far too outspoken and brazen for her own good, especially considering the solid soldier status she had originally been created for. But gradually the green Gem had found herself growing used to Amethystâs playful jabs and ridiculous quips, to the point that she could easily say that she respected her for the Gem she was rather than the Gem she had been made to be.
âLife and death and love and birth and peace and war on the planet earth.â
Peridot couldnât deny that she had been forced to more or less swallow her pride when it came to her dealings with Pearl and Ford. The fact that each of them had an acute, impressive intellect that clearly rivaled her own was a bitter pill to swallow, but one that the green Gem largely had all the same. And in wake of her former bitterness towards the pair, she had found they actually had quite a bit in common, particularly when it came to their shared affinity for technology and science. Over just a few weeks, Peridot had gone from coldly shunning any tips or advice they had to offer on these fronts, to eagerly joining in the exchange of knowledge alongside the author and the white Gem, her former prejudices against them all but forgotten.
âIs there anything thatâs worth more?â
It had largely taken Peridot the most time to grow accustomed to Garnet out of anyone else. On Homeworld, fusion between two entirely different types of Gems was a massive taboo, so the Gem leaderâs very existence had originally offended the green Gem for reasons she found she wasnât able to explain. It had taken her quite a bit of time to look past that singular fact, but once she had, she was actually able to see that Garnet was more than just the fusion that composed her existence. The Gem leader was brave, stable, sensible, and most of all patient, even with Peridot and all of her harsh words and sneers and insults she had once had for her and her teammates. And, when push came to shove, that was something Peridot wasnât about to ignore, even despite however the rest of Homeworld would think of a Gem such as her.
âIs there anything thatâs worth more?â
Limited as they were when it came to more of the heavy lifting, the kids still pitched in as much as they could. Since Dipper was largely able to keep up with Pearl and Ford and even Peridot when it came to the scientific side of the drillâs construction, thatâs where most of his contributions were found. Steven and Mabel were less versed in the technicalities of the machine, but what they lacked in knowledge, they made up for in helpful enthusiasm. While Peridot had initially callously rebuffed their meager assistance, over time she had gradually come to accept it, perhaps even welcome it when it came to tasks that were too much for her to handle on her own. Overall, the concept of âfriendshipâ was still a new one to her, one that she only really had the information provided to her by Steven and Mabel to go off of. But if what sheâd heard of it truly was correct, than it was safe to say that, like it or not, she had come to make friends of just about all of them, as odd and impossible as that might have once seemed.
âIs there anything thatâs worth more than peace and love on the planet earth?â
***
It had taken quite a bit of time and a tremendous amount of work, but after weeks of plentiful effort from everyone involved, the drill was finally complete. The entire group stood admiring their handiwork, which was admittedly quite impressive. Despite its notably small cockpit, the drillâs point was sharp and formidable, fortified by titanâs ore to the point that there was no doubt itâd be able to penetrate the surface of the earth easily and safely. And hopefully, this machine, the product of their teamwork and determination, would be enough to end the threat that the Cluster posed to the planet Earth once and for all.
âNice work,â Garnet congratulated Peridot in particular, giving the green Gem a friendly pat on the back for her hard work. It was enough to startle Peridot though, to the point that she flinched and took up a brief defensive stance, eliciting a collective amused laugh from the others.
âW-we really did it, huh?â Peridot asked, turning towards the drill with something of a small, proud smile.
âWe?!â Steven gasped with sudden delight over the ongoing comradery.
âHeck yeah we did!â Mabel cheered, pulling out her camera. âCâmon, everyone get in close! My scrapbook just wonât be complete without a picture of our awesome drill!â
The others all gladly obliged as they bunched in together in front of the drill, all of them smiling (save for Peridot, who was rather confused as to what was going on in general) while Mabel snapped the photo. A memento that would be sure to memorialize their success long after the Cluster was gone and the drill had fulfilled its purpose.
âIt is quite impressive, isnât it?â Ford mused with a grin, looking back at the drill. âAnd with such a quick turn-around time too! Then again, I suppose we had no choice but to be quick with this, given the circumstancesâŚâ
âOh wait!â Peridot interjected. âThat reminds me, I need to check something!â The green Gem hurried over to the drill, rummaging around inside its cockpit as the others stood by, their spirits still collectively high over the machineâs completion.
âSheâs come so farâŚâ Steven noted happily, looking over towards Peridot from afar. âIt feels like just yesterday that she was fusing with Bill and trying to kill usâŚâ
âNo, no,â Pearl shook her head. âThat was several week ago.â
âStill, it really doesnât feel like it was that long agoâŚâ Dipper said just as thoughtfully. âIts kinda crazy to think that that Peridot used to be this Peridot,â he grinned as he nodded over to the green Gem, who clumsily face-planted after falling off of the drill before frantically running back over to the group.
âCoordinates!â Peridot shouted starkly. âWe still need the Clusterâs exact coordinates in order to drill to it!â
âUh, donât we already know where it is?â Mabel asked with a confused frown. âItâs buried suuuuuper deep underground, right? Which means we could just bam!â She punched her fist dramatically, making a brief drilling noise as she did. âDrill right on down there and kiss that big bad Cluster goodbye!â
âTheoretically, yes, but I understand Peridotâs concern,â Ford agreed. âRegardless of how massive the Cluster might be, weâll still need to know just how far down past the surface of the Earth it is. But who knows how weâd even access that information in the first place?â
âA-actuallyâŚâ Pearl spoke up, apparently apprehensive as she averted eye contact with the others. âThereâs a Diamond Base that may have those coordinates, butâŚ. Getting there is going to be difficult.â
âHow come?â Steven asked.
âBecause its not accessible by warp pad. And itâs onâŚ.â The white Gem trailed off, directing her gaze, as well as everyone elseâs to the bright nightly orb far above them all.
âThe moon?!â Steven, Mabel, and even Dipper asked in awestruck unison.
âYes, the moon,â Pearl replied rather flatly.
âUh, how are supposed to get all the way up there?â Amethyst asked, hands on her hips. âI mean, we can jump pretty high, but I donât think any of us can jump that high.â
âHm, I suppose we have no choice but to construct a lighter-than-air spacecraft,â Ford concluded staunchly. âIâve never really dabbled too much in advanced interstellar aeronautics before, but as far as Iâm concerned, thereâs never a bad time to learn!â
âUh, actually, weâve sorta been there, done that with the whole build-your-own-rocket thing, Great Uncle FordâŚâ Dipper pointed out. âIt⌠didnât really go all that wellâŚâ
âWait, I know!â Steven exclaimed, turning to his pink feline companion as he snoozed peacefully in the grass nearby. âLion! Can you make us a super special warp to the moon?â
Despite the young Gemâs enthusiasm, Lion responded dully, letting out a long yawn before rolling over to continue his nap. âCome on, Lion, we gotta do this to stop the Cluster!â Steven urged, flopping down on top of his still-sleeping pet. âIf we donât thereâs gonna be no more Earth! No more fun times with your pal Waddles⌠no more Lion Lickers⌠no more naps-â
Apparently, this plea was somehow enough to call the pink beast to action, for he instantly perked up, rising from his nap as his eyes took on a pale white glow. While the others looked to Lion at absolute amazement at this shift, Steven simply stood by with a satisfied grin over his petâs eventual compliance. âGuess it was naps.â
âUm, not that this moon trip doesnât sound cool and all,â Dipper spoke up, aptly hesitant. âBut how exactly are we supposed to breathe up there? I mean, I know its not a big deal to you guys,â he said to the Gems. âBut its sort of important for the rest of usâŚâ
âOh, thereâs no need to worry about that, Dipper,â Pearl assured. âThe Moon Base has its own self-contained adaptable internal atmosphere that should be perfectly livable for any human.â
âWow, Pearl, you sure do know a lot about this Moon Base place,â Mabel remarked with a curious grin. âHave you ever been there before?â
The white Gem let out a rather sharp, forced laugh at this, tension rising in her shoulders as she quickly rebuffed the question. âW-who me? D-donât be silly, of course not! I-Iâve only ever⌠heard about it! T-thatâs why I know so much about it!â The others all gave her something of a confused look at this haphazard outburst, but once again, Pearl deflected them all before any further questions could be posed. âN-now come on! We havenât a moment to waste! Letâs get those coordinates!â
Since no one could really argue with such a vigorous command, the group was quick to follow after the white Gem to do exactly that. It took some doing, planning, and careful squeezing to fit everyone onto Lion (or in several cases, into his mane) all at the same time, but eventually they managed to figure it out. The pink beast hardly seemed labored by his many passengers as he instantly broke into a rapid sprint. His speed only seemed to pick up with each quick step he made across the wide fields until, suddenly, he let out an immense, mighty roar. The pounding sound was enough to pierce a hole into the very fabric of space itself, creating a large, glowing portal that he barreled into at top speeds. Lionâs large group of riders all held on for dear life, with only Steven and Mabel really enjoying the breakneck, wild trip as the pink beast roared another portal into existence. He continued this is steady succession, somehow increasing his speed each time as he ripped through each and every portal like a bolt of lighting across a stormy sky. Eventually, the collection of continuous portals became so radiantly bright that it practically blinded all of them, especially as they neared their destination. And once they did, everything seemed to finally stop all at once.
The space they landed in was large and dark, though none of them had a chance to take it in as Lion crashed out of his final portal, sliding across the floor before slamming into a far wall and knocking the Gems and Ford clean off his back. âLion! Are you ok, bud?â Steven gasped, immediately alarmed to see that the impact had knocked the wind out of his pink pet. Fortunately though, Lion seemed no worse for wear as he took a much-needed moment to rest in light of all of the power he had just exerted.
âAw, you poor baby!â Mabel gushed, generously rubbing the pink beastâs mane. âWhoâs a good magical portal-maker? You are! You are!â
âI-incredibleâŚâ Ford mused, adjusting his glasses as he picked himself up off the ground. âI knew that lion was unusual, but I could have never guessed it was capable of something like this. Clearly, Iâll have to do more research on him in order to-â The author was quick to retract the hand he had extended out to Lion as the pink beast growled in warning protest. âO-on second thought, I suppose that could always wait for⌠some other time.â
âWe made it,â Pearl spoke up, her tone serious as her gemstone emitted a bright light for them all to see by. Sure enough, the peaceful nighttime landscape of the farmlands were gone, replaced by cold sterile walls and floors that clearly hadnât been touched in ages. Each of the rounded walls were adorned with what looked to be large murals, though without direct light upon them, it was hard to make out exactly what they were supposed to be of.
âHuh, weirdâŚâ Dipper mused, glancing around curiously. âYou know, I sort of expected the moon to look more like⌠I dunno, the moon?â
âWell it sure is bouncy like the moon is supposed to be!â Mabel chimed in, taking advantage of the lack of gravity to take a high, unfettered leap into the air. âCome on, bro-bro, youâve got to try this!â
âMabel, I donât know if thatâs such a goodâw-whoa!â Dipper gasped in alarm as Mabel suddenly yanked him up into the air along with her before sending him spinning freely high above the ground, despite his best attempts to anchor himself back to the ground.
âHah! Look at me!â Steven chimed in, joining in on the anti-gravity antics as he let himself float freely. âIâm a moon boy!â
âYeah! Alright, moon boy!â Amethyst cheered him on, leaping to join the kids up in the air, only to end up falling right back to the ground instead. âHey! Why canât I be a moon boy?!â
âWeâre Gems,â Peridot pointed out with a scoff. âWeâre a space-faring race designed to conquer other worlds. Our physical forms adjust automatically to the gravity of any planetoid.â
âAww⌠lame,â the purple Gem groaned, sticking her tongue out in disappointment. Right behind her, Dipper and Mabel softly landed on the floor in a jumbled heap of limbs as Ford hurried over to help them up, all while trying to stay grounded himself.
âYou know, it just occurred to me that I probably should have told Stanley we were going to the moonâŚâ the author noted as he carefully pulled his nibblings up to stand. ââŚAh well, Iâm sure he wouldnât mind.â
âUh⌠yeahâŚâ Dipper said, exchanging an uneasy glance with Mabel as they remembered just how harshly the conman had reacted to their last attempt at a trip to the stars. âWe⌠probably shouldnât tell him about this, just⌠just âcause.â
âI was bouncinâ on the moon one day!â Steven sang brightly as he continued free-floating, only to end up smacking into one of the walls and hitting the ground a moment later. He let out a small groan as he picked himself up off the floor, only to spot the large mural of what looked like a tall, elegant woman on the wall beside him. âHuh? Hey, Peridot! Whoâs this supposed to be?â
The green Gem gasped as she shined the light of her own gemstone up at the mural, recognizing the blue, cloaked, graceful figure well. âItâs Blue Diamond!â she exclaimed, taking on an air of immediate reverence before the massive mural. âW-wait! Are they all here? Ah, yes!â Peridot rushed over to the far side of the chamber, where another similar depiction of a different, but still just as regal figure, awaited. âThere she is!â
âThere who is?â Mabel inquired curiously as her and Dipper joined the pair before mural.
âBehold!â Peridot proclaimed dramatically as she threw an arm out at the stern, stately woman on the wall before her. âYellow Diamond! Isnât she magnificent?â
âUh⌠sureâŚâ Dipper deadpanned, not particularly impressed.
âWhoaâŚâ Mabel mused, much more fascinated. âShe has a really long neck. Like a giraffe!â
âW-whaâyou canât just say something like that about the Yellow Diamond!â Peridot chastised, offended. âWhatever a so-called âgiraffeâ isâŚâ
âSo, who are the Diamonds anyway?â Steven asked. âThey seem like a pretty big deal.â
âAre you joking me?!â Peridot scoffed. âThe Diamonds are the Gem matriarchs! Together, they make up the Great Diamond Authority that governs Homeworld and all the outlying colonies. We live to serve them!â
The green Gemâs explanation was cut short from a disgruntled hum from Garnet. The Gem leader stood over them, her expression cold and disapproving, a look that both Pearl and Amethyst shared. Even Ford seemed to be bitterly averting his gaze away from the Diamond murals for some reason, making it quite apparent that not everyone seemed to share Peridotâs high opinion of them. âI-I meanâŚďż˝ďż˝ďż˝ she recanted with a bit of an anxious laugh. âWe were all made to serve them, even if some of us⌠donât anymore.â A beat of awkward silence passed at this, though Peridot was quick to fill it by hastily changing the topic altogether. âH-hey! I think thatâs a control service over there! Letâs take a look!â
Steven and Mabel readily hurried after the green Gem, curious to see more of the mysterious Moon Base. Dipper, however, did stop short to steal just another somewhat distrustful glance at the visage of Yellow Diamond on the wall before him before moving on with the others. Likewise, Garnet and Pearl in particular exchanged something of an uneasy glance before turning away, both of them knowing all too well exactly who the Diamonds were and what they were capable of.
âI think this is rightâŚâ Peridot muttered, examining a nearby panel on the floor. âThe material is different from the surrounding stone. If I just do thisâŚâ She trailed off, pressing the panel, which in turn, emerged from the ground, alongside several others to create something of a floating staircase all around the edges of the baseâs central chamber. The green Gem let out a bright giggle at her discovery, beside herself with excitement over getting to see a space that so few other Gems would ever have the chance to visit.
âThis is so incredible!â Peridot gushed as they began making their way up the long, winding staircase. âOnly the most elite of the elite can enter these sanctums. We are literally walking in the footsteps of the Diamonds!â
âThey must really like stairs,â Steven pointed up as he bounded up them.
âOoo, whatâs this cool glowy orb room?â Mabel asked as they passed through to a higher part of the tower. Sure enough, the room was engulfed in darkness, its only notable feature being the large, rotating spherical light floating in the center of it, its purpose more or less completely unknown.
âIts not what we came here for,â Garnet said sternly, pressing on ahead.
âCan we hurry it up?â Amethyst asked with a huff of impatience. âThis place gives me the creeps.â
Since they had get to get what theyâd come here for in the first place, no one protested as they finished scaling the lengthy floating stairway, only to finally emerge at the towerâs top. Compared to the base they had arrived in, this deckâs walls were composed almost entirely of clear class windows, giving an open, grand view of the lunar landscape surrounding the structure. The pale, cratered surface of the moon stretched far and wide in every direction, the dark, star-speckled expanses of space itself hanging high above. It was an incredible view, to put it simply, one that the kids all took in with apt awe as they took a moment to pause and take it all in.
âW-we really are on the moonâŚâ Steven practically whispered, completely stunned.
âI canât believe itâŚâ Dipper shook his head, just as amazed. âI mean, talking about it is one thing, but⌠weâre actually here, like its nothing. This is totally insane and honestly? I love it!â
âSo do I!â Steven quipped, sharing Dipperâs bright smile.
âAh, I wish I could join in on the excitement you boys are feeling,â Ford said wistfully as he put a hand on each of their shoulders. âBut after traversing countless dimensions far beyond the realms of plausible imagination, the surface of the moon is⌠relatively underwhelming by comparison.â
âOh my goodness!â Peridot suddenly squeaked, catching everyoneâs attention. The others all joined her near the large white throne at the center of the room, coupled by a pristine table surface resting before it. âThis looks like it could be brand new!â the green Gem exclaimed, running her hands over the table. âI mean, itâs a relic by todayâs standards, but golly! Its so elegant! So simple! So perfect!â
âOoo! And it makes a great whiteboard too!â Mabel quipped as she drew a smiley face onto the otherwise spotless surface with a marker she had happened to bring, much to Peridotâs horror.
âStop that this instant!â the green Gem huffed, snatching the pen away from her. âYouâre desecrating an important tool of the Diamonds themselves! Do you have any idea how disrespectful that is?!â
ââŚHuh. Well, disrespectful or not, it does brighten things up a little in here,â Mabel said, taking on a wide grin to match the smile she had drawn on the table. âSee?â
âNo,â Peridot deadpanned sullenly.
âHey! Its got one of those glowy hand dealies!â Steven pointed out from his spot on the throne behind them.
âY-you canât sit there!â Peridot chastised hotly.
âWhy not? Its really cool.â
âThat chair is only for the most elite Gems,â the green Gem explained, exasperated. âYou canât just go around sitting where an elite would sit!â
âWell, they arenât here now, right?â Steven grinned, patting on the ample space next to him on the throne. Peridot hesitated in taking him up on his offer before finally folding, climbing up to join him and laughing in spite of herself over the forbidden pleasure of the act.
âSo, uh, whatâs this thing supposed to be?â Dipper asked, casually plucking a pale, crystal-like object embedded on the chairâs armrest.
âPut that back!â Peridot fussed before turning her attention to the other controls the throne had to offer. âHm, ok⌠letâs see hereâŚâ The green Gem experimentally pressed a button, which brought the throne much closer to the control panel, allowing her to properly activate it and begin searching through its holographically projected screens for the data they needed. âUgh, this is a really old systemâŚâ she noted to the others as she began picking through what the panel had to offer. âJust gotta find the right file and⌠aha!â The projection filled with various graphs, maps, and other information, all of which clearly regarded the Cluster, which Peridot readily translated out for all the others. âThereâs the insertion point. Looks like the Beta Kindergarten in Facet Nine. Itâs the smaller of the two, not nearly as impressive as yours, Amethyst.â
âUh⌠thanks?â the purple Gem shrugged dully.
âBut where is the Cluster now?â Pearl asked, a hint of urgency in her tone.
âHang on⌠oh! There it is!â A diorama popped up, depicting the vague shape of the Cluster itself, buried deep under the surface of the Earth. Where it would hopefully remain until their drill finally put an end to it. âItâs embedded deep into the mantle. Relative to the barn is roughly two thousand, five hundred units down. All we need to do is feed this data to the drill and we should be all set.â
âT-thatâs it then!â Pearl said, pleasantly surprised. âMission accomplished!â
âGo team!â Steven cheered brightly over their success.
âHuh, its not often that something like this goes this smoothly,â Dipper noted. âWeird.â
âWeird or not, letâs get the heck outta here,â Amethyst remarked, already leading the way back towards the stairs. âThe moon is way more boring than I thought itâd be.â
âWait! Maybe it doesnât have to be!â Mabel chimed in, glancing back over the control panel. âHey, Peri, does this thing have any games on it? Or movies?â
âPfft, no,â Peridot scoffed. âThis wasnât used for âgamesâ or âmoviesâ. It was used for planning the colony. Here, look.â The green Gem activated another file, which just so happened to catch the dwindling attention of the others as they looked over the projection of the planet Earth before them. âSo hereâs a map of all structures that were originally built on Earth,â Peridot scrolled through a list of the blueprints for structures that included the Galaxy Warp, the Kindergarten, and several others. âAll told, this probably only accounts for maybe five percent of what was originally planned.â
âWhat was the plan?â Steven asked, somewhat apprehensive to find out.
âWell, letâs take a look.â With a single press of a button, the holographic Earth rapidly deteriorated, massive gaps cutting through its surface, its landmasses ruined and its oceans drained, replaced by an inhospitable mess of a planet conquered by Gems and Gems alone. A horrific sight to everyone present, given its implications. All except for, unsurprisingly, Peridot. âTa da! A finished Earth colony!â she exclaimed proudly. âJust look at this! 89 Kindergartens, 67 spires, a Galaxy Warp in each facet, efficient use of all available materials! What were you thinking shutting this operation down? It could have been great!â
âNo!â Garnet exclaimed suddenly, sharply. âYouâre wrong!â
âWhat are you talking about?â Peridot sneered, baffled. âIts perfect! Look at it!â
âWe are looking at it,â Pearl said coldly.
âYeah! This plan stinks!â Amethyst huffed, properly angry.
âCompleting this colony would have meant the extinction of all life on Earth!â Garnet said, just as upset by indeed, what could have been.
âAnd I thought Cipherâs intentions for the Earth were badâŚâ Ford muttered to himself, shaking his head. âThis is⌠well, I donât know if Iâd say its worse, but Iâd certainly say its arguably just as terrible.â
âSeriouslyâŚâ Dipper shuddered in fearful disgust. âI mean, we knew Homeworld was awful, but this⌠this is on a whole other levelâŚâ
âWell, it could have been on a whole other level,â Peridot remarked rather callously. âIf it had actually been allowed to reach its full potential. Think of the good it could have done! The Gems that wouldâve been made, our empire expanded!â
âAnd all that would have been lost along with itâŚâ Pearl continued bitterly, shamefully. âRose Quartz believed all life was precious and worth protecting. Thatâs why she risked everything to stop this colony from happening!â
âWell, if she wanted to protect it, she did a lousy job!â Peridot argued back haughtily. âThereâd be no Cluster if the Earth had stayed a colony. Now thereâs no colony, and thereâs gonna be no Earth. So thank you, Rose Quartz! You doomed the planet!â
A thick cloud of hostile tension pierced the air at this, outraged silence remaining in light of the green Gemâs snide, thoughtless remarks. Wishing for the completion of Homeworldâs twisted, destructive plans for Earth were one thing; but mocking Rose and her bravery and sacrifice was something that Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl, and even Ford, all of whom had known her personally while Peridot had not, could not simply ignore. Their sharp, furious glares were focused entirely on the green Gem alone, something that the kids instantly noticed more than Peridot did herself. And while Dipper couldnât really find that much of a reason to rush to the green Gemâs defense after everything sheâd just said, Steven and Mabel tried to all the same.
âHeh, aw, y-you guys know Peri!â Mabel shrugged, laughing nervously. âAlways sayinâ wacky stuff she totally doesnât really mean⌠right?â
âWhat?â Peridot countered, confused and clearly not about to recant her stance.
âY-yeah!â Steven rushed to chime in and quell the swelling anger from his guardians in particular. âA-after all, donât forget: I-is there anything thatâs worth more tha-â
The young Gem instantly went silent the moment Garnet snatched Peridot up from her seat by the front of her uniform, keeping a tight grip as she stared down at her with unseen, untold amounts of ferocity. âYou,â she began, her voice edged with tranquil rage as the green Gemâs frightened image reflected back at her through the Gem leaderâs visor. âListen to me. Now. You are talking about things that you do not understand.â
Steven gasped the moment he saw a gauntlet materialize around the Gem leaderâs free hand, and even though he didnât agree with the green Gemâs poor choice of words and actions, he knew he couldnât allow this hostility to continue any further. âGarnet, stop!â he pleaded fearfully. âP-please, its⌠its not worth it. Weâre done here; we got what we came for. L-letâs just⌠go homeâŚâ
Acting upon the young Gemâs nearly tearful request and nothing else, Garnet did as he said, loosening her grip on Peridot and allowing her to clumsily fall to the floor. And then, in a single swift, powerful swing, the Gem leader brought her gauntlet down upon the control panel before her, smashing itâas well as the last remnants of the fortunately failed colony it containedâbeyond all hope of repair. Without a word, the Gems turned to leave the same way theyâd came, Ford joining them as they all turned their back on the green Gem, on the moon base, on everything they knew Rose had fought so hard to stop in its tracks.
âTch, figures you still havenât really learned anything,â Dipper was the first to speak up as he also prepared to leave, though not before sending one final, clearly disappointed remark Peridotâs way. âEven still, after all this time. Honestly, I canât even say Iâm surprised, knowing you.â
âAw, come on, Dipper,â Mabel hurried after him as he turned on his heel and walked off. âThatâs not fair and you know it!â
âWhatâd I say?â Peridot asked as the twins left. âI was just stating a fact. The rebellion didnât really âsaveâ Earth, it just delayed the inevitable.â
Steven sighed upon hearing this, partially taking up Dipperâs line of reasoning that, even after all this time and everything that had happened, Peridot was still just as stuck in her stubborn ways as ever. âThatâs not the way they see it,â he nodded after his guardians sadly. âTheyâve spent thousands of years trying to protect the Earth. I thought⌠maybe⌠you finally understood why⌠But I guess⌠I guess I was wrongâŚâ The young Gem sighed once more, shaking his head forlornly. He had thought Peridot had come so far, from the hand ship, from her time on the run, from Pyrite. He had thought she had grown and learned and come to appreciate the Earth and all it had to offer from her extended stay there. He had thought⌠that they all were finally, finally friends.
But in the end, none of that had mattered as much to Peridot as it had to him, clearly.
Steven only paused briefly at the foot of the platform the throne rested on, noticing that the green Gem hadnât come down along with him. He knew they couldnât very well leave her there, especially given they still had a mission to complete, and despite his rather mixed feelings about her at the moment, he still called up to her all the same. âPeridot!â
âWhat? Iâm coming!â Peridot retorted, hurrying town the steps. Steven watched her silently as though he froze in sudden confusion upon catching the briefest flash of something in the green Gemâs hand as she passed him by. Something she hadnât had when they arrived there, and something he knew, she clearly wasnât supposed to have.
âLetâs go, you two,â Garnet called from the larger staircase and Peridot didnât hesitate to hurry on ahead. Steven hesitated for another brief moment however, keeping his sights on the green Gem alone as he wondered with a sense of newfound worry and fledgling distrust exactly what it was she planned to do.
***
The trip back from the moon to the barn was silent and awkward, to say the least. After Peridotâs haughty remarks concerning the rebellion and Rose Quartz, neither the Gems nor Ford were too keen on carrying on any sort of conversation with the green Gem, despite the kidsâ best efforts to break the thick tension. All the same, the collective group made it back to Earth aboard Lion safe and sound, carrying with them the final piece needed to complete their extensive work on the drill. A victory that, by all accounts, should have felt much more triumphant than it actually did.
âSo how much longer âtill we can use the drill?â Amethyst asked with a huff of impatience as they all gathered around said drill once more.
âWell, with the new coordinates we got from the Moon Base,â Pearl began. âIt should be ready to go. But we really should preform some tests firstâŚâ
âStill, it stands to reason that we should be able to take it down to the Cluster itself within the next few days, at least,â Ford theorized, glancing up at the drill. âThat is⌠if we even have that much time left.â
Despite the pertinence and importance of the ongoing discussion, Steven, Dipper, and Mabel were all only barely listening in on it. All three of them were preoccupied by a number of contrasting thoughts and feelings, from muted frustration on Dipperâs part, to fretful worry on Mabelâs, to growing suspicion on Stevenâs. Suspicion that was entirely focused on one certain green Gem and the unknown device the young Gem had seen her secretly snatch away from the Moon Base.
In fact, in the last hour or so alone, Stevenâs suspicion and apprehension had grown so much that he found he couldnât really keep it to himself any longer. For all he knew, it could have very well been nothing, which was why he had decided against voicing his concerns to the Gems. So instead, he chose to confide in someone who was sure to both believe him and help him get to the bottom of things: the twins.
âHey, can I talk to you guys for a second?â Steven whispered to Dipper and Mabel while everyone was still distracted with the drill. âA-alone?â
While neither of them knew where the clear dread in the young Gemâs tone was coming from, neither Dipper nor Mabel denied his request as they all slipped away to gather just shy of the barnâs entrance. As soon as they were out of the Gemsâ earshot, Steven turned to them with a clear sense of urgency, one that caught them both off guard, even as he spoke his piece.
âI didnât wanna worry the Gems or Mr. Ford, especially since weâre so close to being done with the drill,â he began, glancing down. âBut⌠I-I think Peridot might be up to something.â
âWhat, you mean aside from offending everyone by wishing that the Earth had been hallowed from the inside out?â Dipper retorted somewhat sardonically.
Mabel, on the other hand, was much more genuine in her response. âW-what do you mean sheâs up to something?â she asked, the slightest hint of fear in her tone. Fear that the green Gem could very well be slipping out of the progress she had made and back into her old, sinister ways.
âI⌠I saw her take something from the Moon Base while we were leaving,â Steven explained. âIâm not sure what it is, but⌠I just⌠I have a bad feeling about it.â
âWell, who can blame you?â Dipper said, crossing his arms. âPeridot pretty much just proved that she hasnât changed a bit. Heck, for all we know, her trying to âget alongâ with us could of just been one giant act this whole time. A way to trick us into thinking sheâs ok before she comes in with another hairbrained attempt at destroying us so she can get back to Homeworld or something.â
âB-but then why would she work so hard to help us with the drill?â Mabel cut in, anxiously, earnestly. âDipper, I know youâve never really trusted Peridot, and I know Grunkle Ford and the Gems are all super miffed with her right now, b-but I donât think she wants to hurt us or the Earth anymore! You even said so yourself: the Peridot we know now isnât the same Peridot that first came to Earth or fused with Bill! Sheâs different than that; sheâs better than that. I-isnât that right, Steven?â
The young Gem was initially silent upon being met with this question, his indecisiveness being conveyed through his expression alone. âI-I⌠I really wanna believe that, MabelâŚâ he said sadly, averting both of the twinsâ pressing gazes. âBut⌠I just⌠Iâm notâŚâ He sighed, his mounting conflicting feelings towards the green Gem and her incriminating words and actions all becoming far too much to bear. âI⌠I just donât know,â he finally answered truthfully. âNot anymore. I thought I did, but⌠I think we need to find out exactly what that thing she took from the Moon Base really was and why she grabbed it. J-just to make sure.â
Mabel let out a small, worried sigh at this, but all the same, she nodded her quiet agreement, even if she still dreaded what they might possibly find out. Dipper, on the other hand, was much more forward when it came to taking action concerning the green Gem where his sister was not. âFair enough,â he consented evenly, though his cold expression softened as he glanced over at Mabel. âBut⌠just in case we find something that⌠youâwe may not like⌠I just⌠you guys know that weâll⌠have to do something about it⌠right?â
Steven and Mabel exchanged a brief, equally despondent glance, both of them knowing this was absolutely true. If on the unthinkable chance that Peridot really was planning some underhanded scheme, it was their responsibility to put a stop to it, or at the very least inform the Gems about it. For all of the good will and camaraderie they had formed with the green Gem over the past several weeks, the thought that it could all fall apart in an instant had never really occurred to them. Until now, when it seemed as though there was a very high likelihood of that very thing happening.
On another nod of tight, terse agreement between the trio, they decided to make their move. Peridot hadnât joined the others out near the drill, instead opting to carry on with her own, unknown devices inside the barn. It was there that the kids found her, her back turned to them as she apparently fiddled around with something, no doubt whatever she had taken from the Moon Base. She was quick to slip it away, however, the moment Steven spoke up to garnish her attention.
âUh⌠Peridot?â he began, aptly apprehensive.
âOh! Steven, Dipper, Mabel!â the green Gem gasped, startled as she spun around. âW-what are you three doing here?â
âWe, uh⌠sorta need to talk to you, i-if thatâs ok,â Mabel ventured, not making to much of an effort to hide her constant worry.
âUh⌠s-sure!â Peridot agreed stiffly as she followed the kids inside of the cabin of the old, run-down truck parked inside of the barn. âWhy are we in this broken-down vehicle?â the green Gem asked, genuinely confused.
âI donât know,â Dipper said, sending her a cold, suspicious glare. âWhy donât you tell us?â
ââŚWhat?â
âUh, a-actually,â Steven interjected as he glanced towards the hand Peridot was holding behind her back. The hand that held whatever secret she was trying her hardest to conceal from them all. âWe wanted to ask you about⌠the Diamonds?â
âOh!â the green Gem perked up instantly, excitement sparking in her eyes. âWell, I donât know what the others have told you, but thereâs a reason theyâre in charge.â
âOh yeah?â Dipper asked flatly, clearly not caring about this means to an end. âAnd whyâs that?â
âBecause theyâre objectively better than us!â Peridot grinned brightly. âEvery Gem has their own strengths and weaknesses, but not them. Theyâre absolutely, totally, completely flawless beings. Especially my Diamond: Yellow Diamond, the most perfect, the most reasonable, rational, efficient decider to ever exist in the universe!â
None of the kids really knew what to say concerning this, all of them knowing that Peridotâs incredibly high view of her matriarch was likely very biased. All the same, if her testimony concerning Yellow Diamond was anything, it was proof that the green Gemâs admiration for both her Homeworld and her Diamond still very much stood. âY-youâre really loyal to her, arenât you?â Steven asked, not masking his fledgling disappointment at this fact.
âHow could I not be?â Peridot rebuffed. âWe may have our little truce, but Iâll never forsake the Gem I was made for! And why would I? I mean, sheâs an impeccable, impossibly wise powerhouse of a leader! E-even if she does actually happen to be in league withâŚâ
âIn league with who?â Mabel pressed, a newfound burst of hope filling her as she caught onto the smallest hint of doubt towards the Diamond filling the green Gemâs tone. But whatever that doubt might have been, Peridot was quick to shake it away in favor of her former adulation.
âO-oih, never mind, its nothing,â she scoffed with a wave of her hand. âJ-just some ridiculous rumor I once heard from someone who is absolutely not a reliable source for anything. A rumor that certainly does not bear repeating, especially at the risk of my Diamond catching wind of it!â
âW-well then you better keep it down,â Steven said leadingly, seeing an opportunity and deciding to take it. âBecause sheâs right behind you!â
âWhat?!â Peridot gasped, spinning around in alarm and finally giving the young Gem a chance to swipe the crystal she was holding onto away from her. The green Gem barely even had time to react to the theft as the kids rushed out of the truck, slamming the door right in her face as she tried to scramble after them.
âHey! What do you three think youâre doing!?â she shouted, banging on the window fiercely.
âWhatâs it look like?â Dipper countered just as harshly. âWeâre shutting down whatever it is you had planned!â
âI-I didnât have anything planned!â Peridot protested, though her bristling posture told otherwise. âNow let me out of here!â
âSave your strength,â Steven shook his head, holding the stolen crystal tight and close. âYouâre up against one of Earthâs greatest trapping technologies: the child safety lock.â
âNo!â Peridot wailed, sinking back into her seat dramatically. âHow could you do this to me? The great and loveable Peridot!? I thought we were finally friends like you wanted!â
âWe thought that too, PeridotâŚâ Mabel frowned, genuinely upset. âBut thenâŚâ
âBut then I saw you sneak this off the Moon Base while nobody else was looking!â Steven filled in, his tone much more intense and angry than it usually was as he held the crystal up. âWhat is it? Tell us!â
âHmph, its nothing special,â Peridot scowled at the trio from inside the truck. âAnd definitely not important at all.â
âOh really?â Dipper asked challengingly, grabbing a hammer lying discarded on the floor as Steven readily held the crystal up to him in shared defiance towards the green Gem. âWell, if its not important, then Iâm sure you wouldnât mind if we just smash it, huh?!â
âNO!â Peridot practically shrieked before finally, sullenly relenting. âUgh, all right, look. I have a plan. Allow me to explain. Thatâs a⌠communicator. Meant for the express purpose of contacting the Diamonds back on Homeworld.â
âWhat?!â Dipper asked sharply, so outraged and alarmed that he nearly brought the hammer down on the communicator right then and there until Steven pulled it away at just the right time.
âY-youâre still trying to contact Homeworld?â the young Gem asked, horrified.
âYes, of course I am!â
âB-but⌠but we thought you were finally starting to like it here on Earth!â Mabel exclaimed, desperate for proper answers where they really were none.
âOh, you donât get it,â Peridot countered evenly. âIâm not trying to leave, not anymore! Instead, Iâve got it all figured out. You simple clods keep trying to protect the Earth, but you canât do anything right! Iâll admit I let myself get carried away too⌠laughing, singing, building our little machine⌠but donât you see? None of that matters! What matters is that I can be of use to Yellow Diamond! This planet can be of use to Yellow Diamond! I must contact her, to reveal what Iâve discovered!â
âAre you actually serious right now!?â Dipper exclaimed in appalled disgust. âYou said so yourself that the Diamonds were the ones who put the Cluster in the Earth in the first place! Theyâre the ones who want to see it destroyed now, just like they did with that whole colony plan we saw on the moon! You really think theyâre gonna stop any of that now?â
âOh, of course they will!â Peridot said, thoroughly confident in her plan. âIf I could just have a chance to talk to Yellow Diamond, then Iâm sure I can get herâas fair and reasonable as sheâs known to beâto see that this planet could still be a viable asset to Homeworldâs empire. And whatâs better is that once she sees things my way, the Cluster will certainly be shut down and the Earth saved. Isnât that what all of you want?â
âNot like this we donât!â Steven protested admantly. âUgh⌠why do we keep sticking our necks out for you? Youâre never gonna be on our side! Garnet! Amethyst! Pearl!â Upon calling out for his guardians, Steven raced off, Dipper trailing right after him so they could reveal Peridotâs heinous plan for what it truly was.
âNo! Steven! Donât get them!â Peridot shouted after them, pulling hard against the locked truck door until she happened to spot Mabel, still lingering beside it. âMabel! You believe me, donât you!? Then release me! Now!â
âP-PeriâŚâ Mabel began quietly, tears of clear betrayal finally starting to well up in her eyes as she looked back at the green Gem. A Gem that, up until now, she really, truly had seen as a friend, regardless of everything she had said and done in the past. Even if that friendship had clearly meant nothing Peridot, despite her best, yet futile hopes otherwise.  âPeridot,â she said firmer, wiping away her tears to regard her sternly, yet still so sadly. âI⌠Iâm sorryâŚâ she said as she finally turned away, even though she was the one who had nothing to appologize for.
***
A round of shocked gasps rose from the Gems the instant Steven and Dipper presented the communicator to them. Even Ford balked at it, apparently familiar with the device somehow, even as Pearl took it and frantically reaffirmed what it was.
âS-she took a direct line to the Diamonds?!â the white Gem exclaimed in horrified disbelief. âFrom the Moon Base?! What was she thinking?!â
âShe was âthinkingâ that she was gonna use it to call Yellow Diamond so Homeworld could just come here and pick up right where they left off with that colony plan of this!â Dipper informed hotly. âAnd she almost got away with it if we hadnât stopped her just in time.â
âAnd its certainly a good thing that you kids did,â Ford agreed, casting a bitter glance towards the barn. âTo think that we spent so much time with her, but we never saw this sort of underlying treachery coming. Honestly, I thought that Iâd at the very least be used to betrayals of this scale by now. In a way, its almost disappointing that Iâm not.â
âUgh, for reals, after everything weâve gone through, sheâs still out to get us!â Amethyst growled sharply. âThatâs it! Iâm takinâ back all my cool nicknames for her! So long P-dot and P-diddy, hello⌠AUGH! Iâm too mad! Iâll think of something later!â
The round of incensed reactions to Peridotâs deception continued, even as the green Gem honked the truckâs horn almost constantly from her âprisonâ inside of the barn. Only Steven and Mabel paid any attention to it though, their expressions awash between disappointment, morose, and frustration all at the same time. âI see she knows what a horn is nowâŚâ the young Gem noted sourly.
âIâd been meaning to teach her that oneâŚâ Mabel sighed, turning away, forlorn.
âYou two offered her a lot of your trust,â Garnet noted to the pair, her hands on her hips.
âWe did!â Steven huffed. âAnd it blew up in our faces!â
âI just⌠maybe we thought that⌠if we could be her friends then maybe sheâd finally stop trying to do all of the bad things she came here to doâŚâ Mabel said, burring the bottom of her face inside of the collar of her sweater. âBut I guess she was never really our friend after all, huh?â
âNo, she wasnâtâŚâ Steven concluded, shaking his head as he looked back to Garnet. âYou guys have been protecting the Earth for thousands of years. She couldâve destroyed all that. I⌠I donât know why we thought we could change her mindâŚâ
âOh, come on, you guys, none of this is your fault and you know that,â Dipper attempted to console the pair as he stepped between them, placing a hand on each of their shoulders. âYou both always try to see the best in people, and Iâll admit, sometimes I just donât get it. But then again, maybe its because Iâm not able to see things the way you two do. You both tried your best to change Peridot for the better, and in the end it just⌠didnât work, but that had nothing to do with either of you. Its just⌠sometimes you canât really change what people think, no matter how hard you try.â
âBut thatâs just it,â Steven countered with a frown. âWe donât want to tell her what to do or what to think. She should just⌠know, shouldnât she?â
âStevenâŚâ Garnet began, her tone as steady as ever, though sympathy was clearly there as well. âYou always believe in everyone. Like your mother, you seem to have a little more patience than the rest of us. Thatâs a trait you share too, Mabel. But on the same hand, Dipperâs also right. The truth is, not everyone deserves that patience.â
âWell, look on the bright side,â Pearl cut in with as much of an encouraging smile as she could muster. âAt least you got this thing away from her before she could do any real damage.â
âYeahâŚâ Steven and Mabel both smiled at this, glad to know that, despite Peridotâs burning betrayal, in the grand scheme of things, the Earth would stay safe. UntilâŚ
A sudden explosion rattled the entire area, its center being the barn itself as one of its sides was effectively blown clean off. Everyone turned with apt alarm to see a familiar green robot bursting out of the building, leaving a trail of clear destruction in its wake as it stormed towards them, piloted by a manically laughing green Gem all the while. âFree! Freeeeedom!â Peridot proclaimed, making an obvious beeline towards them. Or more specifically, towards the communicator they now possessed instead of her.
âWhat?!â Ford exclaimed, quite surprised to see that Peridot and McGucketâs robot was still functional at all.
âH-how did she escape?!â Steven asked with newfound fear over the bot bounding their way. He quickly got an answer, however, as the green Gemâs bot chucked one of the truckâs doors towards them, only barely missing the kids as it landed hard in front of them.
âFools!â Peridot shouted triumphantly. âYour invisible rotary shield was no match for me once I applied logic!â
âYeah! Whatever little bit of logic you actually have!â Dipper taunted back, only for Ford to narrowly pull both him and Mabel out of the way of the rest of the truck Peridot launched at them in turn.
âNow, Iâm going to do this rightâŚâ Peridot grinned, prepping her bot to take on the Gems as they rushed towards her, their weapons drawn for the fray. The green Gem lashed out, wasting no time on her opponents as she quickly knocked Garnet aside. The communicator passed hands between Pearl and Amethyst a number of times, but in the midst of their frantic tossing, Peridot managed to intervene, snatching the device away just before the white Gem could nab it. âSee!?â the green Gem exclaimed, hitting both of the other Gems away just as they tried to steal it back. âNone of you know what youâre doing!â
With the communicator finally in her grasp again, Peridot wasted no time in making a hasty retreat in order to get it out of everyone elseâs range. However, none of the others were willing to let the green Gem go through with her alarming plans so easily.
âOhhh, ok! Iâve been ready for this!â Amethyst exclaimed angrily, quickly shapeshifting her form into a sizable, functional helicopter. âGet in!â she shouted to the others, her tone fierce enough to curb any and all comments as they all piled into her surprisingly roomy cockpit.
âOh, of all the times for me to leave my hyper-sonic magnetic propulsion gun at home,â Ford shook his head as he made sure the twins were secure in their seats. âThat would have been more than enough to take Peridot and her robot out in a single shot. Then again, Fiddleford worked on that robot and he usually built his inventions to withstand mine on purpose, so⌠maybe not.â
âWait, whereâs Steven?â Pearl interjected, noticing that the young Gem was the only one not seated in Amethystâs cockpit.
âStupid Peridot, stupid robot!â the young Gem fussed to himself from just a few feet away, still caught up in his earlier woes. âWhy did I always have to go and encourage her in the first place?!â
âThereâs no time for feeling horrible,â Garnet called as she shapeshifted her arm to reach Steven and pull him onto her lap. âWe have to catch Peridot before she contacts Yellow Diamond.â
âThatâs right,â Pearl nodded, patting Stevenâs head. âYou can feel horrible all you want back at the temple.â
With all of her passengers finally ready to go, Amethyst took off, her propeller speeding her onward across the farmland Peridot had already gotten a head start on. All the same, it didnât take long for the purple Gem to catch up to the rampaging bot, which was in the midst of struggling to twist the communicator the proper way and failing completely, much to Peridotâs growing frustration.
âGrr, come onâŚâ the green Gem growled to herself as her robotâs stubby claws fumbled with the communicator. âWork already, you insipid little-â
âHey, Perisnot!â Amethyst taunted as she suddenly flew right by the green Gem. Peridot gasped in alarm as the purple Gem overtook her, Garnet and Pearl each launching their own attacks from her cockpit. The white Gemâs spear clipped the robotâs hull first, though the Gem leaderâs launched gauntlets were what ended up actually taking the bot down. The blast was enough to knock the machine into a nearby power line, giving it enough of a zap to disable it entirely. As battered and broken as the robot was, it tumbled down the hill before its scattered pieces came to rest in the wide field below, including Peridot and the communicator she had been holding onto.
It took the green Gem a moment to pick herself up and regather her bearings after the crash, but as soon as she spotted the communicator lying in the grass just a few feet away, she didnât hesitate to spring towards it. Right before she could reach it however, a sudden blast from above derailed her, knocking her back as she briefly glared up at its source.
âWell, I may not have hyper-sonic magnetic propulsion gun,â Ford remarked with a smirk as he spun a much smaller, simpler blaster in his grip. âBut that doesnât mean I donât go out unprepared.â
For once, Peridot didnât send any sort of snide remark back as she instead refocused her efforts on the communicator. At the same time, Amethyst went in low as everyone unboarded her, allowing her to resume her usual form as everyone rushed to stop the green Gem before it was too late. They all pounced on her more or less at the same time, creating an essential dogpile as they all scrambled to secure the communicator first while further destroying the robot in the process. Peridot herself only barely managed to sneak out of the wreckage, though she wasnât as unseen as she had hoped, for only seconds later, Steven was upon her, with Mabel and Dipper following suit right after. The four of them all leapt for the fallen communicator at once, creating an uproarious struggle with no clear winners in sight.
âYouâre not gonna get away with this!â Steven shouted as he tried his best to yank the communicator out of Peridotâs hands.
âYeah!â Dipper added just as fiercely. âIf you think youâre actually going to let you get in touch with Homeworld, then youâve got another thing coming.â
âAnd youâve got another thing coming if you think you can stop me, you pesky, persistent pebbles!â Peridot snapped, trying her best to kick the kids away to no avail.
âAugh! You donât get it, do you!?â Mabel cried as she pulled hard against Peridot, finally letting her grief and frustration with the situation as a whole pour out. âWe trusted you! We all trusted you! We all wanted you to change and be better than this, but youâre not!â
âWe spent all that time bonding and hoping and caring about you!â Steven added amidst the ongoing struggle. âBut it was all for nothing!â
âAnd thatâs exactly your problem!â Peridot bristled as she finally pulled the communicator out of the kidsâ reach. âYour emotions rule out reason! You waste all your time âcaringâ and âtrustingâ when you could be spending it actually doing important things like saving this pathetic planet! Which is why if none of you will, then Iâll make sure to do what must be done!â
None of the kids had a chance to counter this as the green Gem suddenly snapped the communicator on. The deviceâs surface instantly enveloped itself in a radiant yellow glow as it rose into the air, far out of anyoneâs reach as Peridot laughed excitedly over her victory. âSheâll sort this outâŚâ she grinned, more than ready to detail everything she had planned to her Diamond.
At the same time, the Gems rushed in, grabbing all three of the kids as the communicator continued to brighten. Everyone save for Peridot herself was quick to take cover out of sight behind the fallen robot as the communicator opened up, creating a holographic screen that flashed with the visage of four different colored diamonds. Peridotâs growing excitement grew practically manic as the telltale insignia faded away to what she hoped would be Yellow Diamond herself.
âThis is the Yellow Diamond control room.â Instead of the Gem matriarch, another Gem entirely appeared on the other end of the line. Her coloration was unquestionably and appropriately yellow and her attire simple yet elegant all the same. However, what was most telling was her appearance, which was far too familiar for the kids in particular to not immediately pick up on, even from their hiding spot from afar.
âIs that⌠another Pearl?â Dipper asked, aptly dumbfounded.
âOoo⌠sheâs really fancyâŚâ Mabel noted, somewhat impressed by her style.
âWho is she?â Steven asked Pearl herself, though the white Gem simply let out a harsh scoff at the question.
âNot all Pearls know each other, Steven,â she remarked rather curtly as the Yellow Pearl addressed Peridot.
âWho authorized you to make this call?â she asked, sending the green Gem a cold look of clear disapproval.
âN-no one,â Peridot answered stiffly, but truthfully. âB-but its an emergency!â
âThatâs NO excuse to use the direct Diamond communication channel!â Yellow Pearl snapped harshly, only for another voice to cut into the conversation entirely.
âPearl.â
Yellow Pearl flinched at this deeper, calmer tone, one that she instantly perked towards as she turned to its off-screen source. âY-yes, my Diamond?â
âWhy is there someone on the Diamond Line?â
âI-I donât know!â Yellow Pearl exclaimed. âI was just about to tell her that-â
âIâll take it from here.â The hologram suddenly shifted position, revealing exactly who Peridot had been hoping to speak to in the first place: Yellow Diamond.
Yellow Diamond was, simply put, absolutely radiant. Her poise and posture alone told of a figure with unspoken authority and power. Her figure was astute, elegant, yet firm and lithe, clad in a simple, stately uniform that was telling of a military leader. Her hair was short and angular, her features lovely, yet sharp and dark. In fact, just about everything about her could be summed up as sharp, from her large, pointed shoulder pads, to the shimmering stone resting on the center of her chest, to even her pupils: clear perfect diamonds resting amidst bright, vibrant golden yellow. She sat casually upon a crystalline throne, the vast expanses of space stretching out through the large windows behind her as she typed away on the countless number of holographic screens before her, sparing not even a passing glance at the Peridot who had been so bold as to contact her personally.
âY-Yellow DiamondâŚâ Pearl whispered fearfully, her trembling hands skimming her mouth as she tucked away behind the robotâs wreckage.
âYellow DiamondâŚâ Garnet echoed much more coldly, glaring towards the Gem matriarch from their unseen spot.
âYellow DiamondâŚâ Ford finished just as bitterly, though more to himself than anyone else as he set the depicted Diamond a personal scowl of ire all his own.
Meanwhile, Steven and Mabel exchanged a stunned, yet fearful glance, not really knowing what else to expect from the Gem matriarch based on her stern, severe appearance alone. At the same time, Dipper simply stared her down unflinchingly, knowing that despite Peridotâs foolish conviction, Yellow Diamond would likely still have every ill intent against the Earth. She was still a foe, no matter what she said or what she did and that was something that no attempt at pleading or appealing would likely ever change.
But that didnât mean Peridot wasnât going to try all the same. âM-My Diamond!â the green Gem saluted her leader respectfully. âPeridot, reporting in.â
âWhich Peridot?â Yellow Diamond asked, her tone bored as she continued on with the work in front of her.
Peridot flinched at this, suddenly remembering something sheâd largely forgotten about during her time on Earth. That she wasnât really anything special; she was just one out of countless other Peridots, a fact that had seemed to fade into the back of her mind when she was on a planet where she was apparently one of a kind. âF-Facet 2-F-5-L, Cut 5-X-G,â she reported her designation dutifully all the same. âIâm sorry to contact you this way, but all other forms of communication have been destroyed, and-â
The green Gem starkly cut herself off as Yellow Diamond simply raised a hand to silence her, her attention turned away on one of her many data screens instead. âThis says youâre behind schedule on your mission toâŚâ She trailed off before finally turning to face her underling with a cold, calculated gaze. âHow is⌠the Earth?â
âI-itâs⌠full of life,â Peridot said, with a hopeful shrug.
âOrganic lifeâŚâ the matriarch sneered in disgust. âAnd where is the Jasper I assigned you? And why arenât you calling from the ship?â
âT-the ship was⌠destroyedâŚâ Peridot admitted rather sheepishly.
âBy whom?â Yellow Diamond asked, her eyes narrowing.
âI-it was destroyed byâŚâ the green Gem trailed off, sparing a brief glance at the group hiding behind her. Her eyes briefly met Stevenâs first, then Mabelâs, their expressions awash with equal fear that Peridot would rat them out to her Diamond. But instead, of all things, she didnât. âN-no one!â she vouched, electing surprise from just about everyone in the concealed group. âThere was an accident⌠while we were landing.â
Yellow Diamond sent a brief, disgruntled glare to her underling upon hearing this, but all the same, she was quick to return her attention back to work just as before. âIâll inform your manager of your incompetence,â she scoffed dourly. âAnd what is the status of the Cluster?â
âThe Cluster⌠w-will emerge shortlyâŚâ Peridot reported halfheartedly.
âGood,â the matriarch finally smiled in clear vindication over this fact. âWeâll finally have some use out of that miserable planet. Thank you for your report, Peridot. There will be a ship heading to your location to take you to your next assignment.â
âW-wait!â Peridot interjected hastily, anxiously. âI wouldnât have called to waste your time with a report.â
âYou already haveâŚâ Yellow Diamond scowled, though she still let the green Gem continue all the same.
âNo, I-I mean⌠I⌠I wanted toâŚâ Peridot trailed off, glancing down apprehensively. She was more than ready to divulge her ideas for preserving the Earth while also making the most efficient use of its resources for Homeworldâs benefit. And yet, just before she could, she was overwhelmed by a rather unsavory rumor she couldnât shake, especially now as she stood before the Diamond it concerned herself. Which was why, despite the thin ice she already knew she was treading on, Peridot went off on an entirely different tangent instead. âI-I wanted to ask ifâŚâ she began, making sure to pose this question as carefully as she could. âI-if youâve ever heard of a being who goes by the name of⌠Bill Cipher?â
The reaction to the demonâs name alone from both the Diamond and her Pearl was instant and telling. Yellow Pearl let out a sharp, fearful gasp as she cowered back in alarm. Yellow Diamond herself turned to fully face the green Gem, her previously icy expression instead filled with an undeniably angry sense of curiosity. Likewise, the group gathered behind the robot all carried their own startled reactions to Peridot bringing Bill up at a time like this especially, but even so, they listened carefully for whatever the Diamond might have to say about him.
âWhere did you hear that name?â she asked, her burning gaze practically piercing Peridot cleanly through.
âI-IâŚâ the green Gem hesitated, fear too afraid to fully divulge her dealings with the demon to her Diamond, so she went with a much simply explanation instead. âH-here, on Earth, m-my Diamond.â
âHm,â the matriarch mused, her manner still largely unreadable. âAnd what gives you the impression that I would know of such a⌠âbeingâ, as you put it?â
âH-he⌠he said you⌠t-that the two of you⌠had an⌠alliance?â
âWhat?!â Ford asked in a harsh whisper upon hearing this, the kids and the Gems all echoing his shock with startled gasps of their own.
âI-It canât be trueâŚâ Pearl shook her head, trembling in apt terror at the very thought. âPlease say itâs notâŚâ
âOh, did he now?â Yellow Diamond rolled her eyes, seemingly unconcerned by the green Gem possessing such knowledge. âHow⌠amusing. Though I thought I made it quite clear to that⌠irksome demon that I did NOT want word of our partnership spreading to the lower ranks. But then again, listening has never been his strong suitâŚâ
âS-so its true then?â Peridot asked, looking to her Diamond with immense, almost pleading dismay to hear the opposite. âY-you really are working with him?â
âI fail to see how that information is of ANY concern to you,â Yellow Diamond countered as coldly as ever as she prepared to end the call right there and then. âNow, if that will be all then-â
âO-one more thing!â Peridot interrupted anxiously. Despite the effective confirmation of her Diamond working hand in hand with someone as dastardly and deceitful as Bill Cipher, the green Gem still believed she could make her matriarch see reason. Both in regards to the planet Earth and perhaps even in regards to what would no doubt be an ill-fated alliance with the dream demon unless someone helped her see the truth.
âWhat could it possibly be now?â Yellow Diamond asked, clearly exasperated.
âT-the reason I calledâŚâ the green Gem began, still quite nervous as she began to make her genuine appeal. âThe real reason, wasnât to give a report or to talk about Cipher. Instead, I⌠I believe we should terminate the Cluster!â
ââŚWhy?â the matriarch asked, her quiet, yet icy voice and gaze sending shivers throughout the green Gemâs entire form.
âT-the organic geosystem creates resources unique to this world,â Peridot explained with rising hope that her Diamond would listen, even despite the matriarchâs clearly sullen expression. âWe canât sacrifice all that potential for one geo-weapon! Iâd like to tell you some plans I came up with to utilize the planet without disrupting the local-â
âThatâs enough,â Yellow Diamond cut her off swiftly and sternly. âI donât care about âpotentialâ and âresourcesâ.â
âW-what?â Peridot asked, taken aback by such a harsh rejection.
âI want my Cluster,â the matriarch said simply, succinctly. âAnd I want that planet to die. Just make that happen.â
âNo!â Peridot protested, speaking before she could even think of what she was saying.
Now it was apparently Yellow Diamondâs turn to be taken aback, her sharp gaze focusing on the green Gem before her in a bitter, hostile glare. Her Pearl let out an appalled gasp at such a rebellion, but even so, the matriarch remained steady when dealing with it. âAre you questioning my authority?â
âI-Iâm questioning your objectivity, m-my Diamond!â Peridot countered, offering her leader a quick, respectful salute. One that did nothing to quell the matriarchâs rising anger.
âWell!â Yellow Pearl huffed, shocked at such brashness. Her alarm grew even more when Yellow Diamond suddenly rose from her throne, standing at her full, massive, imposing height that towered well above the green Gem who had brazenly chosen to oppose her.
âYou are out of line.â
âI-I just think-â
âI am not interested in the puny thoughts of a Peridot,â Yellow Diamond continued, ignoring Peridotâs best attempts at breaking through to her.
âBut I-â
âYou have disrespected this channel, and my time with your presence and you would do well to-â
âBut-â
âShut your mouth!â the matriarch snapped, finally silencing the already fearful green Gem as she continued in her outraged tirade. âYou have failed at every step of your mission. Your only chance to redeem yourself is to obey this simple order: you are to leave the Cluster to grow. It will tear apart the Earth, and I will take immense satisfaction in erasing that hideous rock off of our star maps once and for all! Is that CLEAR?!â
âI wonât do it!â Peridot shouted back with every ounce of courage she had in her. She had her worries before, from the moment she learned about the matriarchâs apparent alliance with Cipher himself that her judgement was questionable. But now, after everything sheâd just heard, she had no doubt; Yellow Diamond didnât want or care about what was best for the Earth like she did. The only thing she wanted was to see it destroyed, a plan that, after all the time she had spent there, all she had come to experience and see and learn there, all of the friends she had met there, Peridot refused to let come to fruition. âI can tell you with certainty that there are things on this planet worth protecting!â
Upon hearing this, Steven and Mabel couldnât stifle a shared smile, even while all of the others continued to watch the ongoing exchange with rising alarm. Regardless of her earlier slip-up, it seemed as though Peridot really had learned something during her time on Earth after all. Many things, in fact, and she was proudly displaying all that she had learned right here and right now for her Diamond, and for everyone else, to plainly see.
Yellow Diamond, however, was far from impressed by this callous defiance. âWhat do YOU know about the Earth?!â she shouted viciously, but this time, Peridot did not back down. Instead, the green Gem went in with everything she had and then some as she staked her claim and solidified what side she stood on once and for all.
âApparently more than YOU, you⌠CLOD!â
As poised and calm as she had been before, Yellow Diamondâs regal manner instantly broke in raw, uncontained fury upon having such a disrespectful insult hurled at her. Her palpable outrage was more than enough to shake blind terror right back into Peridot as she quickly saluted out of habit more than anything else before hanging up the call. âP-Peridot out!â she exclaimed, grabbing the communicator and instantly ending the feed. Yellow Diamond and her Pearl disappeared from sight, though there was no question that on the other end of the line, the matriarch, wherever she was, was still absolutely fuming over the measly Peridot who had somehow worked up enough nerve to call her a clod, of all things, right to her face.
With the call over and the danger diminished, the others didnât hesitate to emerge from hiding and head over to the green Gemâs side. Mabel and Steven were the first to embrace her in a tight, triumphant hug, both of them elated by her bravery and by the choice she had made, by all accounts, entirely on her own.
âPeridot, that was amazing!â Steven exclaimed with a delighted smile.
âSeriously, that was one of the coolest things EVER!â Mabel added, just as enthused.
âI canât believe I just did thatâŚâ Peridot said, rather stunned by her own actions as she stared straight ahead, baffled.
âWe were so wrong about being so wrong about you!â the young Gem said, more than glad to be wrong in this instance.
âI canât believe I just did thatâŚâ Peridot repeated, still largely in a panicked daze.
âYou thought you could change her mind,â Garnet said with the smallest of proud smiles.
âBut Yellow D got torn down by the âPeri-dactylâ!â Amethyst quipped with a bright cheer.
âUh, I know weâre all really excited about this, but donât you guys think we should talk about the whole Bill Cipher and Yellow Diamond working together thing?â Dipper interjected with tight, anxious worry. âBecause I really think we should talk about that.â
âI agree,â Ford nodded admantly, gravely. âOn their own, the threat that each of them poses already canât be understated but with Billâs powers and Yellow Diamondâs resources combined, I donât even want to think about what that could mean for the planetâno, the very multiverse itself!â
âThen letâs not,â Garnet said succinctly.
âW-what?â Pearl balked, confused as she shared Ford and Dipperâs understandable concern. âBut Garnet, we have no idea what this heinous âallianceâ of theirs could mean for the Earth or for us or for-â
âThereâll be plenty of time to worry about all that later,â the Gem leader shook her head before turning back to the rather distraught green Gem. âFor now, we have something to celebrate, so letâs enjoy it while it lasts.â
âNot yet we donâtâŚâ Peridot sighed as she handed the communicator off to Pearl. âCan one of you take this?â
âWhy?â Pearl asked as she took the device.
âBecause it can be remotely detonated.â
A ripple of newfound alarm spread through the group at this, especially as the communicator began flashing a bright shade of yellow. âW-why didnât you tell us that earlier?!â Dipper asked Peridot, who had simply resigned herself to lying on the ground, forlorn.
âHow do we stop it?!â Pearl asked, holding the device as far away from her as possible.
âJust get rid of it!â Garnet ordered hastily.
âAmethyst, here!â the white Gem tossed it down to the purple Gem beside her.
âWhat am I supposed to do with it?!â she shouted frantically before Steven quickly grabbed it and securely bubbled it. Still, Garnet didnât take any chances with it as she took said bubble and sent it flying far and high into the dawn sky with as much force as she could muster. Sure enough, the communicator exploded safely, creating nothing more than a quickly-dying firework that left nothing behind in its wake.
âWoo!â Mabel cheered excitedly. âWell, thatâs one way to start a Saturday morning!â
âIâll sayâŚâ Pearl agreed, letting out an anxious breath.
âI thought I could reason with herâŚâ Peridot spoke up from her spot on the ground, still shaken over what sheâd just done.
âYeah, you made her really mad,â Amethyst chuckled, amused.
âAnd then you insulted her to her face,â Pearl added with a small smile.
âWhich⌠was pretty amazing,â Dipper added, forcing a bit of a much-needed laugh, even despite the extenuating circumstances. âAnd honestly kind of hilarious. Even for you.â
âDo you know what this means, Peri?â Mabel asked with a wide, delighted smile. âWeâre all best friends again! I knew you wouldnât let us down when it really mattered and you didnât! Iâm so proud of you!â
âWe all are!â Steven chimed in warmly. âAnd you know what else this means?â
âAnd Iâm a traitor to my Homeworld?â Peridot asked morosely.
âNope!â Stevenâs grin widened as he embraced the green Gem once more. âYouâre a Crystal Gem!â
âWhether you like it or not,â Garnet added with a wry smirk. The others all got a good laugh out of this, though Peridot herself simply let out a loud, long, mortified groan. Of all the things that could have happened, the green Gem had never once expected herself to actually become a part of the team of rouges and rebels who had stranded her on Earth to begin with. And yet, here she was, a Crystal Gem all the same, just as Garnet had said, whether she liked it or not.
And if Peridot was perfectly honest with herself, deep down, she truly did like it after all.

The receiving end of the Diamond Line shattered into thousands of iridescent pieces as it struck the far wall of the opulent chamber. Yellow Pearl squeaked out a gasp, trembling in fear of her Diamondâs infamous temper as she clung close to the massive throne beside her, watching as the matriarch vetted her immense fury without a single beat of hesitation.
âHow DARE that insignificant little traitor try to make a fool out of ME?!â Yellow Diamond shouted hotly, her gloved hands clenched into tight fists as she paced around her spacious chamber. âWhy, I havenât seen such blatant, despicable disrespect and defiance from such a lowly Gem in thousands of years!â
âM-My Diamond?â Yellow Pearl spoke up with an unsteady, wavering smile. âI-if itâs any consolation, I donât think youâre a clod!â
Her attempt at a consolation was, however, completely ignored as Yellow Diamond continued her uproarious monologue. âIf I didnât have much better things to do with my time, Iâd go down to that disgusting speck of a world and shatter that insolent whelp myself! Fortunately thoughâŚâ the matriarch finally broke into a small, dark grin, even though it was clear she was still quite unhinged in her remaining fury. âThe Cluster will take care of that minor aggravation for meâŚâ
âI-it most certainly will, my Diamond!â Yellow Pearl piped up, only to be largely looked over by her matriarch once more.
âBut even so, the audacity of that pathetic Peridot is absolutely appalling!â she scoffed bitterly. âTo even claim that the Earth bears us any sort of use now, after everything it cost us! Its completely absurd! I donât even want to think of what Blue would say if she heard such a ludicrous idea! Or even worse, what White would sayâŚâ
Yellow Pearl choked out a small, frightened whimper at this, though her fear only grew tenfold as a sudden, instantly recognizable voice let out a callous chuckle right beside her. âHa! Yellow sure is HILARIOUS when sheâs ticked off, huh, Canary?â
âAH!â Yellow Pearl cried, flinching away from the dream demon floating alongside her the moment she spotted him. Her surprise was quickly replaced with aggravated frustration, however, to the point that she didnât even notice color swiftly drain out of the throne room altogether. âAugh! You againâŚâ
âGreat to see you too, Canary!â Bill quipped as brightly as ever, patting the Pearl on her pointed hair condescendingly. âItâs been WAY too long since Iâve caught up with you and Yellow!â
âNot nearly long enough, if you ask meâŚâ Yellow Pearl grumbled sourly, though she did breathe a small sigh of relief as the demon turned his attention away from her and to her angry matriarch instead.
âY-ellow, Yellow!â Bill greeted cheerfully as he suddenly appeared right in front of the incensed Diamondâs face. âHowâs it goinâ? Iâm not interrupting anything important, am I?â
âYOU!â Yellow Diamond scowled, glaring the demon down harshly. âWhat in the stars do you think youâre doing, going around and haphazardly divulging confidential plans and classified arrangements to the most commonplace members of my court?!â
âWhy, Yellow, I have NO idea what you meanâŚâ Bill remarked, feigning innocence.
âYou know full well what I mean,â the matriarch scowled, instantly calling his bluff. âThe Peridot stationed on Earth! She said you made contact with her and laid out all of the undisclosed details of our alliance without my permission. And youâre going to tell me exactly why you did this instant!â
âYeesh, Yellow! Better simmer down over there, otherwise ya might just end up SHATTERING yourself on accident!â Bill joked with a rather mocking chuckle. âRemind you of anyone you used to know?â
Yellow Diamond let out a disgusted, appalled scoff at this, her rage growing even more as she tried to swat the demon clean out of the air on her fury alone. âHow dare you even mention what happened to her in such a way, you despicable-â
âANYWAY,â Bill interjected quickly, hovering high and calm out of the furious Diamondâs range. âI wouldnât worry about olâ Greenie if I we you. In case you havenât noticed, sheâs really not the brightest Gem in the case.
âYou mean the Peridot?â Yellow Diamond calmed somewhat, raising an eyebrow up at the demon. âWell, I certainly canât argue with that, given her foolish choice to rebel against me.â
âSpeaking of rebelsâŚâ Bill began leadingly. âYou really donât think Greenie came up with that whole âletâs save the Earthâ idea on her own, do you? Especially since you sent her there to check up on the very thing thatâs supposed to blow it all to oblivion in the first place? Sorta makes you think that maybe⌠just maybe⌠someone might have⌠inspired her to act up like that, donât ya think?â
ââŚWhat are you saying?â Yellow Diamond asked, narrowing her eyes at the demon curiously.
âIâm sayingâŚâ Bill continued, shrinking himself down so he could take a seat on the matriarchâs shoulder pad. âThat all those pesky rebels you, Blue, and White thought you got rid of way back when⌠arenât as âgoneâ as youâd like to think.â
âWHAT?!â the matriarchâs stark, stunned shout echoed throughout the chamber. âShow me! Now!â
âIf you say so, YellowâŚâ Bill almost cheerfully complied, gliding before the Diamond and using his flat form to present images of Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl alike to her. âNot a ton of those Crystal Chumps are still kicking, but the ones that are sure are a pain in the equilateral sides, if ya know what I mean. Plus, theyâve even picked up a handful of human pals to help them out from time to time,â Bill continued, showing off each of the Pines as well. âAs if they couldnât get any MORE annoying, huh?â
âHmph,â Yellow Diamond scoffed, seemingly unconcerned by the lot she had just seen. âA few mere straggling Off-Colors and their pathetic human pets are nothing. The Cluster will wipe them and everything else on that miserable rock out soon enough.â
âYeah, suuuure it will,â Bill remarked with a flippant wave of his hand. âBut hereâs the kicker, Yellow. Take a look at who ELSE is still down there, having a GRAND old time spending the past several centuries celebrating âherâ victory over you-know-whoâŚâ
The matriarch gasped, her eyes wide as she noticed the image of a lone pink gemstone hovering over the demonâs open palm. A gemstone, that for all its infamy across all of Homeworld, she would have recognized anywhere. âRose QuartzâŚâ
âYou got it!â Bill quipped, snapping the gemstone away. âEverybodyâs FAVORITE Quartz is still alive and well, unlike a certain⌠âlittle sisâ of yours she went and wiped out of existence just to save some dumb old planet and a bunch of dumb old humans. Seems like a pretty raw deal that she got to survive when poor little Pinky didnât⌠huh, Yellow?â
Yellow Diamondâs former fury was nothing compared to the absolute raw, wrath she was showing now. Her fists were so tight they were shaking, sparks of bright electricity bursting all over her form as her anger consumed her from the inside out. âA mercifully short end brought about by the Cluster is far too good for that⌠that shattererâŚâ she seethed, her voice quiet, but the fury in it as clear as day. âCipher! I have another request for you!â
âOh, do you now?â Bill asked, almost gleefully curious. âWell, lay it on me, Yellow! Iâm sure Iâd LOVE to hear it!â
âBring me Rose Quartz before the Cluster destroys the Earth,â Yellow Diamond ordered coldly, viciously. âI want to be the one to shatter her myself, just like she shattered-â The matriarch cut herself off, her expression filling with pain that she couldnât even bear to speak to, though she was quick to shake it away. âJ-just⌠just bring her to me. Whatever it takesâŚâ
âYou know, normally Iâd be all for that kind of hellbent revenge, Yellow,â Bill remarked calmly, casually almost. âBut I think Iâve got an even BETTER idea for ya. Me and my pals have a little bit of⌠unfinished business to take care of down there on Earth in the not-too-far-off future. What do you say to the idea of joining us when we get down thereâheck, make a whole trip of it if ya want, complete with your snazzy armada and everything!? That way, you can grind Quartzy up into a bunch of pink stardust the moment you see her, right in front of whatâs left of her little army on her own doomed planet, just like ya want! What do you think? Sounds like a winner, just like ALL of my plans do, right?â
âHmâŚâ A small, vindictive smile filled the Diamondâs features at this. âYes⌠The crushing defeat she deserves on the very planet she thought she won from usâŚ. I do like the sound of that quite a bitâŚâ
âSo⌠I take it youâre in then?â Bill asked knowingly, stretching a blue, flaming hand out to seal the deal.
Yellow Diamondâs sadistic smile deepened at this, more than ready to exact the vengeance she had been craving for over 5,000 years now. âYes, I am,â she firmly, readily agreed, returning the demonâs handshake to solidify their latest treacherous plan. âRose Quartzâs years of running and hiding are over. Now, its her turn to face the very same fate she brought upon PinkâŚâ
âOh, YellowâŚâ Bill laughed more to himself that to the matriarch, knowing the truth that she didnât and exactly how he could use it all to his advantage in his long, ongoing game. A game that was, by all accounts, very close to reaching its ultimate end. âYou have NO ideaâŚâ

Doctor Who Book Review: Players
 Summary
Non-Spoilery Review: A story with a fairly strong beginning and a disappointing and boring everything else.
Read More for the Spoilery Section
The Good: I enjoyed Sixâs voice for the most part and Periâs as well. They had a good dynamic (when they were actually on screen together).
The Bleh:
This is basically a love letter to Winston Churchill and in the most boring of ways. It strikes a very NuWhu vibe of having them protect THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON who is in this rare case, not the Doctor (and thank god for that). Not that Churchill is portrayed without flaws but heâs definitely painted as the Movieesque hero that everyone needs. Even if the things that happened were historically accurate (and I canât really say if they are or not) itâs not really presented in a way thatâs interesting or anything other than aggrandizing the guy.
This book is written by Terrence Dicks, who is a screenwriter and has written episodes of Whoâbut the fact that heâs a screenwriter shows. This book is very dialogue heavy and the weight of the plot is pushed forward by endless conversations and/or action scenes. There are no actors to give the dialogue any kind of nuance. And some things seem to just be crammed in there because he can and it would look good on a set, like numerous costume changes or action pieces but thereâs not a whole lot of life in them. While this doesnât necessarily equate to a boring book, in this case it does and the last half I skimmed through because I did not care.
I was also very annoyed when Six showed a memory to Peri (in order to further the plot) when he was Two. And it went right into Twoâs POV â except it wasnât deep POV as youâd expect, he was just kind of there. It wasnât even necessarily his perspective. It could have been interesting or provided some emotional involvement, which this book seriously needed, but no, it was just more things happening to keep the plot going. For me if it had been in Twoâs POV it would have been interestingâbut as it was, I was not invested. Also itâs marketed as a six book. I want to read about six and what he does and Peri. Not spend seven-ten chapters on two who doesnât even have companions with him and is missing that chemistry. But we cant have anything taken away from Churchill can we. B|
The Bad:
So the central conceit of this book is the antagonists are immeasurably rich immortal bored beings playing with human history as a game because they are sooo bored. That is such a tired trope and, moreover, these antagonists are given no motivation other than that to play this game. Iâm not even sure what IS the game or the point of it. Itâs just something there meant to be creepy and chilling because oooh itâs dark canât you see how dark it is? And the book ends on: All that matters is the Game.
Well freaking why? There are literally no stakes for them if they win or lose. So who cares if they do? The Doctor doesnât even disrupt or end the game, just gives them a stern talking to and thatâs mostly to exposition dump like oooh look at this clever idea. Arenât you intrigued?
No. Iâm not. And all in all it just struck me lazy as hell.
And it might not have been. Because I think as an episode, this would have been interesting. In a visual medium like a show or even a comic it would have been cool to see this.
As a novel? No. I am left annoyed and disappointed and just bored.
I also heard it was a prequel of sorts to something else? Which might explain some things that this is just a grand set up for other things but I donât even like the set up and donât really trust him for reading on.
 Conclusion:
Good idea and potential which it fails to live up to. Great for fans of Winston Churchill.
In my canon library?
Sure I guess :/
 Two out of five stars
