Hi mark thanks so much for your blog.

It must happen sometimes you work on a mechanic or card that everyone understands how its supposed to work and its clear what that card wants to do but the rules of the game cant technically allow for it to work. Can you share an example of something that seems simple but has never been done because of a rules issue?

The best example would be to look at the acorn cards of Unfinity. While a few we're kept acorn for Legacy concerns, the vast majority of acorn cards simple don't work in the rules. Here are some I get asked about all the time:

2 years ago I made this art for my game BLASTRONAUT, now I have 6 days left until release.

so i like most of what i’m seeing of unfinity but the more i see the more irrational the legacy/acorn split looks.

first of all the separation is completely arbitrary in an alarming amount of cases. ostensibly the distinction is the legacy cards work within black border magic’s rules and just look/sound silly, while acorn cards do things too stupid to work in real magic. And yet Nearby Planet is acorn bc its “too strong”, Goblin Blastronauts is acorn bc its second ability would be “hard to accurately word” otherwise, and Space Beleren is the poster child for memory issues.

and for what? who does this serve?

before unfinity, whether or not you could play silver-border stuff in commander was contingent on if your playgroup was fine with it. that’s what the silver border signified, something that you can play with, but only with a heads up.

so is the message, in effect, “if you want to play Space Family Goblinson and Comet the Planewalker That Picks Its Own Loyalty Abilities at a table, no one can stop you”? well, no, not if you ask the people running the game

if you ask them, you arent being forced to play against anything because you can always say “i dont want to play against this”. instead of opting in to silver border gameplay, you out out of acornless un-card gameplay. just like you opt out of playing with chun li, and gandalf, and tyranids, and the goddamn tardis.

and again i ask, who benefits from this? do you really honestly think that fans of “funny” magic cards are happier in a reality where other players have to go out of their way to stop them from playing funny magic cards? 

magic doesn’t want to make silver border cards anymore, as evidenced with universes beyond, because they only want to sell “real cards”. but maro wants more un-sets and the fans want un-sets. so they gave us this... half-measure

maybe i’m missing something here
