Y/N L/N BREAKS DOWN 'CORNELIA STREET' | s.kerr
summary: you breakdown the story behind and the lyrics of your song 'cornelia street'. [1k words]
pairing: singer!reader x sam kerr
notes: classic genius video
[STUDIO; PALE PINK BACKGROUND, Y/N SITTING]
Y/N L/N: Hi, I'm Y/N L/N and today I'm breaking down my new single 'Cornelia Street'.
'CORNELIA STREET: THE BREAKDOWN'
[CORNELIA STREET INSTRUMENTAL PLAYS IN THE BACKGROUND]
[STUDIO; PALE PINK BACKGROUND. Y/N SITTING, A SMILE ON HER FACE]
Y/N L/N: I wrote this song about my girlfriend, Sam and how we kinda came to be? I guess? It's about realising how much a newer love means to you and how much it could ruin you.
[INSTRUMENTAL PAUSES]
Y/N L/N: Well.. that was a little dramatic, wasn't it?
'WE WERE IN THE BACKSEAT DRUNK ON SOMETHING STRONGER THAN THE DRINKS IN THE BAR // "I RENT A PLACE ON CORNELIA STREET" I SAY CASUALLY IN THE CAR'
[STUDIO; PALE PINK BACKGROUND. Y/N SITTING, A SMILE ON HER FACE]
Y/N L/N: These lyrics reference one of the first times that I ever met Sam. She was in London and playing for Chelsea, I was there co-writing with another artist at the time and we were introduced by some mutual friends. We ended up in an Uber together after a night out and she asked what I was doing in the UK, and I told her about a little apartment that I rented at the time.
[CUTS TO A CLOSER SHOT OF Y/N'S FACE]
Y/N L/N: She soon became very very well acquainted with that apartment.
'WE WERE A FRESH PAGE ON THE DESK FILLING IN THE BLANKS AS WE GO // AS IF THE STREET LIGHTS POINTED IN AN ARROWHEAD LEADING US HOME'
Y/N L/N: Sam and I weren't really sure what we were doing at the time, if it was official or not, we were making it up as we went really. She's got a super busy schedule, her workload is very demanding. That was something we both came to terms with very quickly in our little 'will they, won't they' situation.
[CUTS TO Y/N HOLDING UP A POLAROID OF SAM POINTING TO THE 'CORNELIA ST' STREET SIGN]
Y/N L/N: I think we were really lucky that my schedule wasn't super hectic at that point in time, because I'm not sure how we would've managed it (CHUCKLES). Now we've been together for nearly two years, we've worked out a system.
'AND I HOPE I NEVER LOSE YOU, HOPE IT NEVER ENDS, I'D NEVER WALK CORNELIA STREET AGAIN // THAT'S THE KIND OF HEARTBREAK TIME COULD NEVER MEND, I'D NEVER WALK CORNELIA STREET AGAIN'
Y/N: This part is my favourite.
[CLIPS OF SAM FILMED ON A SUPER-8 FILM CAMERA, Y/N IS FILMING. SAM IS LAYING ON THE COUCH LOOKING OVER TO Y/N, SHE WAVES SHYLY FROM HER SPOT UNDERNEATH A GREY THROW BLANKET]
Y/N L/N: It's pretty self-explanatory to be completely honest. I don't plan on losing her anytime soon.
[B-ROLL FOOTAGE; SAM SITTING ON A CHAIR BEHIND THE CAMERA, WATCHING Y/N SPEAK. A BIG SMILE ON HER FACE]
'AND BABY, I GET MYSTIFIED BY HOW THIS CITY SCREAMS YOUR NAME // AND BABY, I'M SO TERRIFIED OF IF YOU EVER WALK AWAY'
Y/N L/N: I had never watched football before Sam... like, ever. I wasn't a fan, I had no interest in it. So when we started dating she took me to my first ever game and I watched her play again Man City. The crowd just loved her (Y/N SHAKES HER HEAD IN DISBELIEF). I never realised how much Sam could hold thousands of people in the palm of her hand. They adore her.
[CLIPS OF Y/N ON THE BIG SCREEN AT A CHELSEA GAME, PANS TO SAM ON THE PITCH, SMILING UP AT THE FOOTAGE]
Y/N L/N: It was funny because.. we had just gotten back from flying from.. somewhere? who knows. but Sam had gotten in the morning of the game and the crowd did this chant. It was 'even with jet lag, she's better than you' (LAUGHS).
[CLIP OF THE CROWD CHANTING 'EVEN WITH JET LAG SHE'S BETTER THAN YOU'. SAM TURNING AROUND TO LOOK AT THE CROWD SHYLY]
Y/N L/N: I mean it's true (SHRUGS). I was so taken aback by how much they all just loved her, but now whenever I sit in the crowd section, I make sure we chant it... it's my favourite.
'BACK WHEN WE WERE CARD SHARKS, PLAYING GAMES, I THOUGHT YOU WERE LEADING ME ON // I PACKED MY BAGS, LEFT CORNELIA STREET BEFORE YOU EVEN KNEW I WAS GONE'
Y/N L/N: There was a moment before Sam and I officially got together that I almost.. ran away? kinda.
SAM (OFFSCREEN): Kinda?!
Y/N L/N: (LAUGHS ALONG WITH THE CREW) I did, I completely did. I for some reason just got really nervous that she wasn't as serious about it. I had lots of conflicting feelings at the time, but Sam was very quick to get me back on track and make me realise what the important things were.
'BUT THEN YOU CALLED, SHOWED YOUR HAND, I TURNED AROUND BEFORE I HIT THE TUNNEL // SAT ON THE ROOF, YOU AND I'
Y/N L/N: She fixed it all, as she does. Sam is very good at that.
[CLIP OF Y/N AND SAM KISSING OVER THE BARRIER OF CHELSEA'S HOME GROUND]
Y/N L/N: She fixes everything.
'YOU HOLD MY HAND ON THE STREET, WALK ME BACK TO THAT APARTMENT. YEARS AGO, WE WERE JUST INSIDE // BAREFOOT IN THE KITCHEN, SACRED NEW BEGINNINGS THAT BECAME MY RELIGION, LISTEN'
Y/N L/N: I don't stay at Cornelia Street anymore, Sam and I live together now when we're both in London. We went back before I wrote this song and it was so surreal to realise that someone else was now in that apartment.
[PHOTOS OF Y/N AND SAM FADE ONTO THE SCREEN, ALL FROM INSIDE THE CORNELIA STREET APARTMENT]
Y/N L/N: We spent so much time in that apartment it was like our first home together. Really it was just a place for us to spend our down time. I love that apartment and I try to go back every time I'm in London... which is a lot. So, thanks to Cornelia Street for having me and thank you to Sam for having me.
[CUTS TO A CLOSE UP OF Y/N]
Y/N L/N: I'm very lucky.

Hey. I saw your comment about Cornelia Street possibly being Elizabeth street. Do you have a full more detailed song analysis of it being about time spent at Karlie’s place and not about time spent in the apartment Taylor rented?
I don’t have any evidence of it, it’s just purely speculation. But, there are a couple reasons why I say it’s a fun, creative possibility it’s written about (1)spending time at Karlie’s apartment on Elizabeth street in early 2014(January-March), as opposed to (2)the time at Cornelia St. (May/June 2016-early 2017(so about 6 months to one single year))
So let’s look at the first hypothetical scenario: (1) spending time at Karlie’s apartment on Elizabeth street in early 2014(January-March)
A) the simplest reason that it started out as just a fun, comical thought was “they have the same syllables!🤪” but then I was like “wait a minute...”
B) at the end of Cornelia St. there’s sounds of a storm...which could be the sound of the “perfect storm” of Clean.
C) In “...Ready for It” it talks about “let the games begin”...and in Cornelia St. it says “back when we were card sharks playing games, I thought you were leading me on.”
i. This also makes me believe RFI is also written early on. I do believe it’s a song of duality and sarcasm, as others have also speculated. The verses being her bombastic media alter ego and the chorus being her real self. AND, in the RFI chorus the original lyrics were “in the middle of the night in my dreams, that’s when I get to be with you; you’re so sweet.” —-> wildest dreams is all about dreaming of being with someone, not to mention the liner note HE ONLY SAW HER IN HIS DREAMS, so is “Sometimes I wonder when you sleep Are you ever dreaming of me?” in Delicate, which leads me to believe all 4 songs (Delicate, Wildest Dreams, ...Ready For It, and Cornelia St.) refer to the dreams about the NEW relationship. (“Every night with us is like a dream” in New Romantics also seems like a duality sarcasm song)
ii. Speaking of “NEW”!!... “Sacred new beginnings”
D.) Lyric analysis:
- “We were in the backseat Drunk on something stronger than the drinks in the bar.” Could this be the same bar in Delicate? “Dive bar on the east side where you at?”
- "I rent a place on Cornelia Street" I say casually in the car. Now I know this song in general is in first person but it could be written from Karlie’s perspective. I think Welcome To New York is written from Karlie’s perspective(“you” being Taylor and “me” being Karlie), and I think the same goes for This Is What You Came For(“she” being Taylor). I have no reason to believe the “I” in Cornelia St. isn’t Taylor...but I also have no reason to believe it isn’t Karlie.
- “We were a fresh page on the desk” resonates again like “sacred NEW beginnings.” Like a new relationship, also “page” is referenced again in NYD
- To me, “Filling in the blanks as we go” has the same echo as “we can’t make any promises now can we babe?”(Delicate) and “don’t read the last page”(New Year’s Day)—-Sidenote: I also think NYD is talking About the rebirth that resulted from “Clean”
- “As if the street lights pointed in an arrowhead leading us home.” This line is recognising the place in the song(wether it be Karlie’s apartment on elizabeth st. Or the place on Cornelia st.) as a place they both recognise as home. “Home” is also regurgitated in I Think He Knows: “I think he knows When we get all alone I’ll make myself at home And he'll want me to stay.” —— ITHK is also a song I perceive to be written early in their relationship, after Wildest Dreams. Where it’s still delicate but Taylor thinks Karlie knows Taylor is invested. “we can follow the sparks I’ll drive. so where we gonna go?” Sparks indicate newness, and I think it’s them planning Big Sur, especially since Taylor drove
- “I get mystified by how this city screams your name”, now, Karlie, as we all know, is allll over NYC career wise and billboard wise lol and, maybe the wonderful enchantment and awe of it never ends and is always amazing...but it could also be the beginning of them knowing each other, finding out this new person you’re into IS all over NYC, it IS mystifying
- “I'm so terrified of if you ever walk away.” The “walking away” is expected when they meet, in Wildest Dreams...but I think this line signifies a turning point for their commitment being more substantial. Saying the possibility of Karlie walking away is possible but terrifying
- “Windows swung right open, autumn air.” Now this fits with the 2016 timeline, and it could very well be true...or it could be an edit to make it fit more with the Joe timeline. If she were really talking about Elizabeth street, it would’ve been during winter...which, is when jackets are worn lol “Jacket 'round my shoulders is yours”
- “We bless the rains on Cornelia Street.” This makes me think of Spring time(April showers bring May flowers)...but neither 2016 or 2014 shows Spring being a season when they lived on either street. So maybe rain is metaphorical in this sense. I’m not sure how though
- “Back when we were card sharks playing games, I thought you were leading me on.” Assuming this was written about early 2014, “games” is reiterated in multiple songs, as I said before. “Baby let the games begin”(RFI), “cat and mouse for a month or two or three”(paper rings) “I’m about to play my ace”(New Romantics).
- “I packed my bags, left Cornelia Street Before you even knew I was gone.” Taylor spends time with Karlie from potentially as early as December/early January 2014 until presumably ~Jan. 27-~Feb 1st, 2014 when she returns back to the Red tour in London.
- “But then you called, showed your hand. I turned around before I hit the tunnel; Sat on the roof, you and I.” They confessed feelings and sat on Taylor’s roof together, which is reiterated in King of My Heart: “is this the end of all the endings?...all these nights we’re spending up on the roof...” Then Taylor goes back on tour, and since she’s happily in a new relationship(or stabilism to say the least), she probably pens “I Forgot that You Existed” and “Clean” about being in London on the Red tour from ~Jan. 28- ~Feb. 9, 2014 at the same time as Dianna and she didn’t even think of her.
- “You hold my hand on the street, Walk me back to that apartment. Years ago, we were just inside”- now assuming this is written in 2014 about 2014 it’d be “months” ago...and if it were written 2018 about early 2014 it’d be “years ago”
- “Sacred new beginnings That became my religion.” I think this is echoed again in Don’t Blame Me, which I think in part is about the trip to Big Sur, and about getting a new publicist.
- “I rent a place on Cornelia st. I say casually in the car.” Honestly I have no idea why the song opens AND closes with this sentence. Is the opener past tense and the closing line present tense? Is the opening line supposed to be Elizabeth at and the closing line Cornelia?? I dont know lol
NOW, let’s look at the second hypothetical scenario and say this song was (2) written in 2018 about May/June 2016-early 2017(so anywhere from about 6 months to one single year))
A) at the end of Cornelia St. there’s sounds of a storm...which could be the sound of “the storm that’s coming” in Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince
B) Lyric analysis:
- “I rent a place on Cornelia Street" I say casually in the car. I dont know why this would be said casually as if to seem cool if they were dating for two years at this point, unless it’s casually in an expected sense
- “We were a fresh page on the desk Filling in the blanks as we go.” So renting Cornelia street happened right after Tayvin ended and right as Hiddleswift started(knowing what that outcome was going to be, and knowing Joe was the ultimate long term goal from a PR perspective) so they had everything mapped out, a fresh page (“paper thin plans”(DBATC))
- “I get mystified by how this city screams your name” like I said earlier, maybe the amazement never ends or gets old
- “I'm so terrified of if you ever walk away” after so much time spent together like two years it would be terrifying if this significant person walked away
- “Windows swung right open, autumn air” this does follow the timeline of 2016
- “We bless the rains on Cornelia Street” I still think this is metaphorical because spring of 2016 also isn’t a time when they lived at Cornelia st.
- “Back when we were card sharks, playing games I thought you were leading me on” probably reminiscing on the games being played in the beginning of 2014 two years ago
- “I packed my bags, left Cornelia Street Before you even knew I was gone” i dont know why you wouldn’t tell your long term partner of two years you’re leaving the place or why they wouldn’t know, but the rental of Cornelia st ended in early 2017. Maybe it was to avoid the paps and press
- “But then you called, showed your hand I turned around before I hit the tunnel Sat on the roof, you and I.” I dont know why you wouldn’t know the hand of someone you’ve been seriously dating for two years...
- “You hold my hand on the street Walk me back to that apartment.” Taylor and Karlie didn’t have much, if any, PDA in 2018 so I’m not sure what it’s referring to here
- “Years ago we were just inside.” So heres where it makes me thing it was written about 2014. Even if this were written in 2018 about 2016 it would baaarely qualify for “years ago”, especially since moving out was early 2017
- “‘I rent a place on Cornelia st. I say casually in the car’” I still don’t know why this is repeated at the end

Can’t wait for your essay and analysis about the songs on Lover. Specifically Cruel Summer, Cornelia Street, DBATC, False God, Afterglow and Daylight. Obviously the album talks about a narrative about the relationship and the songs are all connected but I would love to hear/read your takes on it.
Thank you for the encouragement. I’m not ready yet. There’s too much. Maybe after the next MV.
There was a nice discussion on Twitter this afternoon about Cornelia st, talking about the use of the term “fresh page” not “blank page” and how that made me think of fresh start, rather than a new start, and thinking of when ts moved into Cornelia st at the beginning of June 2016 and what was going on then and how things I think were tough in the months before that, and how she uses the term “leading us home” as in “our” home, not “my” home. It just really sounds like “we’re gonna have a fresh start in this new place without the stuff we had before”, but then the mood changes from hopeful to fearful yet again, and when you think of what happens in the next few months, it just makes so much sense that things remained fragile after this initial hopefulness.
Excuse me while I go cry in the corner

So, after listening to Lover a thousand times, I finally made a list of the things I noticed on every song, the little details I loved about them, and just about anything going through my mind while the song played, enjoy:
Taylor's laugh!!! and the way the rhythm goes down and then up after the bridge, and the way she just changes the way she says the words like sometimes she says indifference in a way and then another way? its just magical.
The way she lowers her voice in "i’m always waiting for you just to cut to the bone", the way she says "you'll be the last to kNOW" its just magical, and how she screams "I don't want to keep secrets just to keep you" and DAMN, I bristle with her voice in "he looks up, grinning like a devil"
The way she hits those notesssss, the way the song just feels like a concert and a crowd singing back to her, and how she isn't ashamed to just say she wants someone forever, the parallel between the story of us and Lover about the seat, how in the end she just adds "darling"
"When everyone believes ya, what's that like?, I'm so sick of running as fast as I can, wondering if id get there quicker if I was a man" the way she says Saint Tropez, and bitches, the background vocals that just go up and then down, like she says "coming at me again" really loud and then " if I was a man" lower, its just amazing. the last part that goes like an echo of her voice, just. majestic.
The way the song doesn't actually end, it just leaves you there hanging like waiting for something to happen and how it goes perfectly with the lyrics, and how it feels like a heartbeat with anxiety going really fast, the lyrical transition between "who could stay" and "you could stay"
The way she sings slow and then really fast. The way she says "boy I understand!" and "I mean" in the background, "I whisSPer in the dark", the last part where she says "Skipping down 16th Avenue, baby” in the backkkkk
The entire metaphor is just majestic. "It’s been a long time coming boy" before the chorus? damn. the lyric "you win stupid prices" the way she sings "who seems to care" and "boys will be boys then" and the brIDGE, the way the last words are in the background its so majestic. The melody after the bridge and before the chorus, and then the scream!
The thing that happened with the guitar at the beginning! "now I wake up in the night and watch you breathe" the countdown in the chorus is magical, and the way the first time its "kiss me" and then its "kiss you" this lyrics "Honey, without all the exes, fights, and flaws we wouldn't be standing here so tall, so" the way he says "ahhh" in a very calm voice between the 2nd pre-chorus and the chorus. the musical change before the bridge, the way she says "Uh huh" after the bridge, the voice she does in the chorus after the bridge that is so slow and then very fast.
the lyrics "We were a fresh page on the desk filling in the blanks as we go", The musical change after she says "I hope I never lose you", its amazinggggg, and when she starts "baby I get mystified" and the voiceeeee, she singing so high and then goes very low saying "id never walk Cornelia st again", the ways she just knows when exactly to repeat the word "Cornelia st" and have it sound so magical and not repetitive, and she says it so beautifully. the way the rhythm just goes so amazing with her voice in the pre-chorus. the background voices in the "years ago, we were just inside" the musical change in the last chorus that goes from "oh never again" so low and the so much stronger "aND BABY I GET..." the "I don't wanna lose you" background voices
Just, the intro! you have to listen to it with headphones to know what I mean. the musical change afer "and you're not my baby" the PIANOOOO right before she says "its death by a thousand cuts" and it just keeps ringing to keep you rising your heartbeat. the way she just talks to the traffic lights, the lyrics "But if the story’s over, why am I still writing pages?" and the birDGEEEEE. its. just. amazing. how it just ends with "I'll be alright, its just a thousand cuts"
The beginning that had us all thinking it was Joe, the way she says "Tennessee whiskey" and "home is where the heart is" the entire London vocabulary on the song!, the voices in "Babes, don't threaten me with a good time", the voice she makes when she sings "wanna be with you"
Its a song that feels disguised in hope but its actually hopeless, it's like a scream for help she can’t actually make, and the chorus the dixie chicks do, is just amazing. "I know delusion when I see it in the mirror" the way she says "neon", and how you can just feel the heartbreak in her voice when she sings the bridge. its. just. so. strong.
The saxophoneeeee. just. yeah. the way she plays with her voice in "I cant talk to you when you're like this" and in "they all warned us about times like this" the way she says "we'd still workship this loo-oo-oo-ove" and then she switches to "you can't talk to me when I'm like this", How in the bridge it just feels like the song will go faster but then it doesn't and its amazing
the way she pauses when she says "can you just not....", how fast she talks and leaves wondering if we said the right lyrics, how the song does a strong hit before the oooh, ohhhh, ohhhh, how in headphones the "glaaad" just splits in both ears amazingly. of course, the lyrics "shade never made anybody less gay"
the way she sings "Fighting with a true love is boxing with no gloves", how she pauses after every word is just magnificent. the musical change in the chorus, so beautifully made, how she is just begging him "just don't go" the way she says "below" in verse 2, so pretty, i can relate so much to the lyrics and how she is to blame and she doesn't want him to leave, its just magical how she can express that feeling so well, "Tell me that I'm all you want, Even when I break your heart", the masterpiece of music that ends the song, its so profound.
the drummersssss, sound so pretty, and the bak voices singing "and there's a lot of cool chicks out there" how the music stops while she’s singing "I promise that'll you’ll never find another like.." and then it explodes in the Meee-eee, Brendon's voice is so magical and fits so well with Taylors and with the song. the "Hey kids, spelling is FUN" fits so well with the song, I know some people don't like it but the song without just sounds so empty in that part, it doesn't feel right without it.
So this song took me a while to appreciate, the rhythm is so angelical and beautifully made, and the way Taylor’s voice just go with the rhythm is so amazing, its like she wrote it with the rhythm already on her mind, and its so simple but yet so complicated, and also the saxophone in the middle, and the bells and how she also talks about a weeding refering to the rice on the ground
it starts with one of the most magestic lyrics i've heard "My love was as cruel as the cities I lived in, Everyone looked worse in the light" SO. WELL. WRITTEN. the way the background voices sing "daylight" with her its so pretty. the way her voice changes when she says "It's brigter now, now", the backgrounds in this song are one of the best in my opinion, the bridge? background voices rule the entire thing. and of course the majestic line "I once believed love would be burning red, But it's golden" ad well, we can't forget Taylor's voice at the end just summing up the entire album in he best sentence she could ever think of "I wanna be defined by the things that I love, Not the things I hate, Not the things I'm afraid of, Or the things that haunt me in the middle of the night I, I just think that You are what you love"

I'm sorry I don't mean to call out that anon but why are we still arguing about this when there's a line that literally says "We were a fresh page on the desk, filling in the blanks as we go".
When I said"Doesn't really indicate anything timeline-wise.", I was responding to an anon who said "In the cornelia st song she says: "I rent a place on cornelia st, I said casually in the car", as if it had just happened! But it would imply that in June she was already seeing joe. What's your opinion?" That is, she could have told Joe about Cornelia St in June, July or August for all we know - saying she's renting it doesn't indicate when she actually said it to Joe. Though my guess would be earlier in the summer rather than later.
---Btw, TTF is it OK with you if we use use the submit feature instead of ask sometimes? I kind of like not having to cut up responses into 2 or 3 parts. But let me know if you prefer to stick to ask for asks!

SUBMISSION
——-
HELL YES PLEASE SUBMIT WVERYTHING!!! I prefer this so much over posting a bunch of asks. I hate having to copy paste and all that. Plus! A lot of times not all the parts come through. So please! I love submissions!

My Lover analysis
Disclaimer: some of these ideas were found on tumblr and all opinions are mine only. <3 Also hopfully this is coherent enough :) Overall: Lover is in every way about love. It sounds like new love, like being in love, being scared to love, being scared to lose it, and being secure in it. @taylorswift is looking at the world through rose-colored glasses and singing with the same storytellings, and symbolism we have come to know and love. This album shows a woman who found a love that is real and chose to step into the daylight and let everything else go.
Lover Analysis By Krishna C
I Forgot That You Existed: This song is the perfect way to start this "next chapter." This song is an upbeat bop! Taylor uses smart and witty lyrics like "it isn't love; it isn't hate; it's just indifference." This song closes the book on the persona from reputation and opens to the literal next chapter of her life. We stan.
Cruel Summer: This track was written with Jack Anttinof and St. Vincent, and you can hear both of them in this. The music is very indicative of summer. This is the first mention of the color blue, the relevance of which will be discussed further in later tracks. The growl when she sings "He looks up grinning like a devil" is * chef's kiss* perfect.
Lover: Listening to this song again after hearing the rest of the album it becomes obvious why it was chosen as the title track. This song is what I imagine it sounds like to be completely and unconditionally in love, in a way that it seems like a part 2 to "Call It What You Want." To me, this song sounds like sitting in front of a fire with the person you love, wrapped up in a blanket while a record player plays in the background. It sounds like dancing in front of that fire with your lover wearing a sheet as a wedding dress. The anxiety from songs like "Out of The Woods" disappears.
The Man: I will never shut up about this song. Taylor addresses sexism head-on through the lens of her own life. It is imperative to note this song is not Taylor saying she wishes she were a man. Taylor explores the idea that if she were a man and lived her life, in the same way, she wouldn't be scrutinized and criticized like she is now as a woman; she would be praised for it. I walk with 113% more confidence when listening to this song. Highly recommend.
The Archer: The lyrics on this album are some of her strongest yet, and this song solidifies that. The song, which has a backing that sounds like an arrow being shot through the air, is simple enough that the lyrics are the main focus and quiet enough that you can hear the fear and doubt in her voice. The invisible smoke is indicative of having fears that stop your breathing, but that no one else sees. Also, the line that references all of her heroes dying all alone is a slight nod to "The Lucky One" (2012). The initial fear subsides at the end, where she declares that she is ready to fight for her love even if it kills her. The song ends with a numb sound that is not unlike the sound a bow and arrow make when the arrow is finally shot.
I Think He Knows: This song builds seamlessly. You can hear the initial fear in telling the other person how you feel but then realizing that you don't have to say anything because they already know and feel the same way. As the song builds confidence in the feelings do too.
Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince: This song is haunting and sounds like being chased down an empty school hallway. A lot to unpack here, since she has spoken about it. Taylor has spoken of the political undertones of this song and the metaphor of a school football game as a form of patriotism. She has said this song came out of the feeling of everything falling apart in her life and with the country in 2016. In that year, she says, she became more critical of blind patriotism like the practice of Friday Night Lights. The symbolism of the football game and school be seen through many of the lyrics, notably "waving homecoming queens" and "I saw the scoreboard" and the cheerleader chants in the background. She also alludes to "Blank Space" (2014) in a lyric where she says she is "running through rose thorns" (see "Rose garden filled with thorns"). There is, of course, also a reference or two to the color blue in this song, but we can unpack that later on. In this song, she is also going with the idea of her being "an American queen," as we saw her in reputation (2017). Taylor has said this song is about finding someone who is able to escape all of the noise and run away with you until the chaos subsides. This song radiates Lana del Rey vibes but in a way that it is still completely a Taylor Swift song.
Paper Rings: This song is very recorded player 1950s but also very punk rock. It sounds like she is singing into an old microphone, and the effect is fantastic. It is upbeat and her way of saying 'I'd marry you in a heartbeat and I don't need money or fancy things (the fancy things could be a nod to "King of My Heart") to do it.' Again she mentions the color blue in regards to painting her lover's brother's wall blue. The significance of blue can be seen in the reputation magazine pictures of Taylor painting said wall and also in the lyric from "Dancing With Our Hands Tied" (2017) in which she says she was "deep blue, but you painted me golden" (golden sparkles are seen in another picture being painted over the blue wall).
Cornelia Street: This is, by far, my favorite song. Taylor really returns to her storytellings roots with this song, something she has done beautifully since 2006. It tells the story of a love all in reference to the sacred street on which their love story was born. Taylor tells the story of a fight where she left the street and was headed for "the tunnel" (likely Lincoln tunnel), but then he stopped playing games and told her how he felt about her, so she turned around and then they made new memories on the street together. Their love almost ended, but then flourished on Cornelia street (Cornelia is also a flower that can be seen in the background of many of her recent performances as yet another easter egg). In the song, she is telling the story of their love and saying that if the story ever ended, she could never walk that street again because now she associates it with him and their love. You can hear the sadness when she says she could never walk Cornelia Street again towards the end of the song where she takes a breath. THIS IS NOT A SONG IT IS A STORY. TAYLOR HAS HER REAL LIFE LOVE STORY.
Death By A Thousand Cuts: This song does, in fact, cut a bitch up. It is a sad bop in which the instruments in the backing sound like mini jabs or a chandelier that is flickering. Taylor has said this song was inspired by the movie Something Great (2019) and the idea that sometimes a relationship ends not because you want it to or because you fell out of love but because you grew apart and then couldn't continue together. She "boards up the windows," an allusion to "Call It What You Want," of this love even when the lights in the house are still flickering and the love is still there. Its a breakup song for when you wake up at night being happy for the time you had with someone but sad that it had to end, because it hurts like a thousand cuts that will never heal, to end something that isn't and may never be over.
London Boy: This is a quick mood change. In this song, Taylor again makes a slight reference to patriotism. She samples audio from her co-stars from the upcoming cinematic adaptation of Cats (2019), James Cordon and Idris Elba. This song is so cleary about her boyfriend who is, obviously, from London. She says she can love where she is but her heart lies in London with her boyfriend. This song also makes reference to his accent which is a slight nod to "Gorgeous" (2017) in which she made fun of his accent. She also name-drops, designer Stella McCartney, which as we all know led to their clothing collaboration.
Soon You'll Get Better: In this song the Dixie Chicks easter egg from the ME! Music video finally hatches with a collaboration. This song is a vulnerable glimpse into Taylor's mother's battle with cancer. It sounds like a cold, empty hospital hallway that gets filled with love when certain people enter it, but it also sounds hopeless. Taylor lists a number of things she has done in an attempt to make this part of her life happier, none of which have worked. Nothing could work unless her mother gets better because her mother means everything to her and has moved mountains for her. Now Taylor is doing what she can to move the mountains for her mom. The depth of her hopelessness is exemplified in the line where she confesses that she prays now because "desperate people find faith." Taylor herself was raised Catholic but has seemed to grow away from that, but now she needs that faith because it means some sort of hope is out there.
False God: The sounds from the horns really make this song. It also somehow reminds me of Halsey's music in that it feels very mysterious, and almost like you are listening to a hallucination. "False God" clearly draws yet another connection to religion, which is something she has also done in past albums with songs such as "Don't Blame Me" (2017). Again she makes reference to New York City, a city which she fell in love with when she moved there around 2014 and wrote: "Welcome to New York" (2014). In this song, she compares herself to the city, perhaps in the way that Taylor and her love are like the city in that they are "ever-changing" (2014). To me, this song sounds like sounds like driving down a dark road with a cross attached to the rearview mirror and your hand in your lover's hand as you drive without knowing what will come next on the road. This metaphorical car is being driven by "blind faith" because the two people are so in love, they will continue to move forward together ready for whatever is to come. It's what could have happened if the guy from "All You Had To Do Was Stay" (2014) had, in fact, stayed on the road with her instead of running them off of it. In this song, her significant other is not worried about what's going on with things that are outside of their control, and they continue together because they have faith in their love.
You Need To Calm Down: This upbeat bop feels like an extension of "Shake It Off" (2014), but this time it is more inclusive and with political undertones that voice support for the LGBTQA+ community especially (see music video as well). In this song, Taylor addresses the different types of hate that various groups of people (in various communities) may face in their lives and encourages people to "calm down" and not waste their breath with hateful words and useless comparisons.
Afterglow: Yet again, this song contains a reference to the color blue, which her significant other once revealed in an interview is his favorite color. Blue is significant in that it represents him, and she seems to have associated the color with him. In the past, Taylor has used colors to represent emotions (see "Red" 2012), and blue is usually associated with sadness and loneliness. This song is her taking ownership of having caused a fight, but telling him not to leave because of the fight. Taylor is asking her lover to meet her at the happy ending to come after the light, which takes place in an "Afterglow." This song seems to be yet another nod to religion in speaking about a glow that is not unlike that associated with heaven. There is a possible reference to "...Ready For It" (2017) in a lyric about an island (recall the lyric referring to "island breeze"). The bigger symbol in this song is light, which Taylor has been known to use in past albums to show different emotions. The lyric "burned it down" is not only her taking ownership of the fight, but is another use of symbolism and imagery of a fire (seen in other songs such as "Begin Again" 2012 and "Call It What You Want" 2017). This song could be connected to the idea that she wants this fire (in this case is the fight) to burn out, and when a fire is burnt out it, the embers still glow, as she hopes their love will still glow when this fight has ended.
ME!: A self-love anthem this song celebrates individuality and embodies the bright aesthetic of this album. It also makes her feelings about herself and her lover clear, especially after the dark persona she created for reputation (2017). In the music video for this song, she walks out of the invisible smoke that was present in "The Archer." This song screams: 'Yeah I might have insecurities, but I'm an individual, and you are too, and we can love each other for who we are.' A very feel-good song.
It's Nice To Have A Friend: In my opinion, this is the weaker song on the album, but still not a song that I would ever skip. Also important to note that the backing vocals of this song are a school choir from Toronto and all of the profits from the song go to them (found this info on tumblr). This song sounds like drawing on the sidewalk with chalk. It is from a school kid's perspective, to represent the child in both people in the relationship. At first and at the beginning of the song there are games, and the signs about how the two people feel about one another are not clear (see lyrics involving sidewalk and snow, note and video game). Then it becomes clear that they both want to be together, and they start to bring out the child in one another. They are more than lovers they are best friends, and all other doubts from earlier have melted away, like the snow on the sidewalks.
Daylight: The perfect end to this album of love where Taylor's easter egg from her Elle article hatches as she encourages us all to "step into the daylight and let it go." Taylor herself had to let go after the darker days that resulted in reputation (2017) in order to find the light in her life again (she has said this in an interview). Her last album felt more like a night album, but Lover and the bright and light aesthetic that comes along with it makes it very much a day album. She references the smoke from "The Archer" saying that she "in clearing the air" she "breathed in the smoke." This song sounds like fresh air in a glowy bed of flowers. Taylor is moving on to brighter and happier things, and this song is the perfect way to show it. Along with this light, is the fact that Taylor once believed love was simple like black and white but in this song we see that now she sees love "in screaming color" ("Out of The Woods"). The color that screams love in this song is gold (see lyrics), as stated before there is a picture of Taylor painting her boyfriend's brother's wall blue in the reputation magazine, the picture that follows shows Taylor painting a patch of gold paint over the blue (see "Dancing With Our Hands Tied" lyrics). The color gold is often associated with magic, light, and happiness and it is clear that this is the purpose of the color in the song as well (see lyrics "golden like daylight"). She also compares herself to her beloved New York City yet again, this time it is in reference to sneaking around the city like she was sneaking around in "Delicate" when the relationship was new. Taylor acknowledges that she has made mistakes, but now it's time to step into the daylight and keep walking and it can be assumed that she intends to walk hand and hand with her lover. The audio at the end of the song sounds like a voicemail you would listen to if you want to remember someone fondly. It sounds like a faded memory with colors that are still vivid and bright. It sounds like hope. The album ends with the word love, and that says it all.

15. New Years Day ~ painting a nice picture of new years day (because She was (tw) raped on new years eve night just before midnight) and basically how Adrian was there for her the day after and picked her back up
Lover
1. I Forgot That You Existed ~ anyone not on her side and lowkey about the guy who r*ped her. Although that's on her mind a lot, this would have been her when she's enjoying her time with someone and she forgets for one night. Or how she wishes she could forget about him for good.
2. Cruel Summer ~ probably her brief rebound of a relationship with park tbh and she convinced herself it was love to try and make herself feel better about the guilt. But ultimately they both knew it wasn't good or going to work.
3. Lover ~ about Holly and Adrian finally being in complete control of their relationship but still having insecure moments where she worries about losing him, but he's there every time. It speaks for itself mainly tbh.
4. The Man ~ the feminist jumped out LOL she aimed for this one to be relatable in every sense cause she knows it's a very common topic. But some things jump out from her own experiences like: "when everyone believes ya, what's that like?" About the r*ape trial.
5. The Archer ~ I love how holly it is 😩 reflecting on how she handled certain situations like things with hensley (bad blood) and how she's made a lot of mistakes. And being lowkey terrified she'll lose people because of it. I think mainly Adrian and Soraya tbh.
6. I Think He Knows ~ Adrian
7. Miss Americana And The Heartbreak Prince ~ about the negative affects caused by st Jude's and "fame" and having Adrian there through it all. The second first specifically would be about the night of the r*pe and when she told Adrian and he was the one of the only ones who cared what the truth was. Personally I think this is the most holly song on the album! I knew exactly what she'd write it about as soon as I heard it lol
8. Paper Rings ~ Adrian
8. Cornelia Street ~ kinda Begin Again 2.0 for holly and it basically being about that first time she saw Adrian again after they're 4 years apart and the fear she had of losing them/him again. I especially feel the line "It's the kind of heartbreak time could never mend"
9. Death By A Thousand Cuts (storytelling)
10. London Boy ~ her dream has always been to live in New York so she's kinda made herself new York in this album and Adrian's the London boy, even though he isn't English LOL? but their relationship lives in London basically. And she loves NY but she'd go wherever he is instead.
11. Soon You'll Get Better ft The Dixie Chicks ~ Soraya's health problems, how much her wellbeing means to holly and how desperately she needs her to just be okay all the time.
12. False god ~ I picture her breakup with Adrian back when she was pregnant and they were kids. How it all went to shit but that small hope still there "We might just get away with it." She probably would have taken snippets from old journals back from that time for this.
13. You Need To Calm Down ~ It's about ever form of love
14. Afterglow ~ this one hits me so much and cause I'm so invested in holly and adrian, hurts my heart. Basically apologising for hurting him ever, mainly with Park. But lowkey the r*pe thing too. Even tho he'd never be mad or blame her for that, she blamed herself at one point. And She panics regularly that it would ruin them.
15. ME! ~ a confidence boost for herself, her friends and her fans.
16. It's Nice To Have A Friend ~ being in love with your best friend. Also how I picture her and Adrian starting out in school.
17. Daylight ~ about how her and Adrian both had other things while they weren't together, but since they got back together, it was like stepping back into the daylight and nothing can be as perfect as that feeling they have with each other. They never really had it with anyone else.
Folklore
1. The 1 ~ (storytelling)
2. Cardigan ~ recently holly has defo felt kind of forgotten about and falling into the shadows. And as always, Adrian is slowly started to pull her out of her dark place.
3. The Last Great American Dynasty ~ awhile ago Adrian bought them a kind of holiday home and she wrote a story about the previous owner (storytelling)
4. Exile ft Bon Iver ~ the last song she wrote for the album. Her and Adrian recently broke up and have one of if not their biggest arguments and this was about that
5. My Tears Ricochet ~ Her Parents
6. Mirrorball ~ about being what the media want you to be and being perfect and when you fall and break they watch as if it's entertainment
7. Seven ~ (storytelling) a childhood friendship where one is suffering (tw) in am abusive household and the other wants to rescue them. It's also about wanting to stay young as long as possible and when we stopped doing the little things only children get away with
8. August ~ Park
9. This Is Me trying ~ Herself and her struggle to hold it all together. She defo would have had that moment of being on the edge of a cliff and having the moment she decided to back away from it
10. Illicit Affairs ~ Park

Lorde’s birthday Nov. 7, 2016
November 8, 2016 Trump wins presidential election
💖Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince💖 ? (swift, Joel little)-it was said to be written january 2019...but it makes more sense to me to be written when Trump won the election November 9, 2016(“my team is losing”)...or midterm elections November 6, 2018. Unless it’s more about homophobia, which is what I think personally. I think the high school metaphor connects it to Glee, but that could be a reach. Plus Miss Americana could allude to when she was dating Conor Kennedy. Putting this here feels more like a reach to me but I might move it later. It could also be a letter to the fans and she could be MA AND the heartbreak prince, like a duality piece? “Lights(new romantics, welcome to New York)”, “rose thorns(CIWYW, blank space, wonderland Taymoji)” “run away with you(CIWYW, late November 2016)” “storm is coming”(Clean, CIWYW, Cornelia), “head hung”(cruel summer, clean), “bad girl”(I Did Something Bad, So It Goes…)
Windows flung open”-Cornelia st., “now the storm is coming”-MAATHP, “look through the windows of this love even though we boarded them up”-death by a thousand cuts, “windows boarded up after the storm”-CIWYW, “daylight”
the end of Cornelia st. Has storm sounds like “the storm is coming”(MAATHP)
“Livin’ in winter I am your summer”(ME!)-“sunshine”=Karlie in winter 2016
“Windows boarded up after the storm. He built a fire just to keep me warm”(CIWYWT)
November 12, 2016 , a month later, Taylor goes to Joe’s movie screening
SOCIAL MEDIA BLACKOUT (FOR A YEAR) November 2016. Social media blackout for a year. Taylor swift says in the Miss Americana she’s “sad that [she] didn’t [publicly outright support democrats] two years ago”(November 2016) and was in “such a horrendous place she wasn’t gonna pop her head out of the sand for anything.”
“He built a fire just to keep me warm”
🖤I Did Something Bad🖤 ? (swift, Martin, shellback)-some point between Nov. 13-19, 2016. I believe this song was either about making a pop album(1989), her label, or counter suing, or getting shit for hiddleswift so suddenly, or Kim’s snapchats of the phone call, or the 2016 election, or just isolating herself (“Do” vs. “Did”? [LWYMMD]). Original lyrics: “if you’ve been on my case for a long time…” the first verse makes me think of Swiftgron

🖤…Ready for it?🖤 ?(swift, martin, shellback, payami) “ghost”(This Love) “lights down low” “no one has to know...in my dreams(wildest dreams, Paper Rings)” “timing(New Romantics) “jailer(so it goes)” “never be the same(state of grace)” “games(blank space, New Romantics, this is what you came for,Cornelia st.)” “island breeze...move to an island”=April trip or Big Sur trip? Original lyrics: “in the middle of the night. In my dreams. That’s when I get to be with you. You’re so sweet”
-the red flower taymoji makes me think it’s about Swiftgron from the Red era...but idk

Jan. 3rd, 2017 diary entry- “this time last year I was living in LA (Jan. 2016)…now essentially based in London hiding out trying to protect us from the nasty world…we’ve been together and no one has found out for 3 months”- in Jan. 2016 she did move back to LA, but idk when that happened (late 2014?)
“Nobody’s heard from me for months, I’m doing better than I ever was”(CIWYW)
January 8, 2017 IDWLF music video shot very early in the AM in London so she wouldn’t be Papped
recorded delicate here
recorded getaway car here
recorded idsb here
recorded tiwwchnt here
recorded ciwyw here
Reputation supposed to release mid 2017 (earliest April 2017, latest June 2017)
Feb. 14, 2017- KK posted a Valentine’s video that referred to her significant other and referencing things from the Vogue Best Best Friends video, and included a thumb war, and was quoted in Love magazine saying she loves TS for who she is (Delicate tea).
Early 2017
“She rose slowly,...wary of phone calls[the ones you dont answer anymore>trick to holding on]...and get-love-quick schemes. Standing broad shouldered next to her was a love that was really something[nyd, paper rings, lover, maathp, dwoht].”(Why She Disappeared)
“I packed my bags left Cornelia St. before you even knew I was gone”(Cornelia)
Moves out of Cornelia St. apartment by early 2017 (march?)-sidenote: she was at Cornelia about a year
“Sat on the roof you and I”(Cornelia)...”on the roof”(KOMH)
💖Cornelia St.💖 ?(swift, antonoff) -Cornelia st. was probably written as one of the very last songs on Lover-”blanks”(blank space), “card sharks”>>>”about to play my ace”(new romantics)...
But it’d only be a year and a half prior to writing it, as opposed to “years ago.” (assuming she wrote it at this timeframe about Cornelia). she moved out (~March 2017). Also holding hands on the street isn’t possible at this point in time. Unless it’s a futuristic lyric as a hope for the future. Also “hope it never ends” sounds like a hope for a new relationship...especially since a RENTAL is something known to be finite. Also, at the end of Cornelia there’s rain...like, foreshadowing hard times, in my opinion.“Years ago we were just inside...new beginnings” (Cornelia)
The Trick To Holding On probably written sometime here(before December 2017)
“Pick your poison or your cure”>>>”Once was poison ivy but now I’m your daisy”(Don’t Blame Me), “let it go”(daylight)
“Without your past, you could never have Arrived-so wondrously & brutally, by design or some violent, exquisite happenstance...here. And in the death of her reputation she felt truly alive.”(Why She Disappeared)
Revisit Big Sur?
Cornelia St. apt. Sells April 2017
April 9, 2017
National picnic day is April 21
May 16, 2017, 6 months later after blackout, reports say Taylor and Joe are dating, emphasising they’ve been together for months and have kept secret from the media.

I’m now going to include documentation of Hiddleswift just to show how messy it was and what a real bro he was the entire time, even though it was a fake relationship. I still don’t know how or why Hiddleswift happened the way it did from a PR perspective
June 1st 2016 Taylor and Calvin stunt ends
June 15 1016 , 2 weeks later, Taylor and Tom stunt begins
June 16, 2016 Calvin tweets “it’s about to go down”...both delete all social media traces of each other
June 21, 2016, 5 days later, Tom and Taylor go to SelGo’s tour in Nashville
💖Lover💖 ? (swift) (producers: swift, antonoff) “I was halfway into writing the songs before I wrote the song ‘Lover.’(x) ...recorded July 18, 2018 - “lover(CIWYW)” “magnetic(gorgeous)” --Jack says this song was written July 17, 2018, but “this is our place” makes me think it was written at Cornelia St. also the background for Lover being written((11:08) in Miss Americana doc) is the same background as the Gorgeous songwriting YouTube video, which I think is in her Nashville apartment. Also, the Instagram pic of Rep tour rehearsals with the word “Lovers” on the t shirt was posted April 25, 2018.
“Laughing with my lover”(CIWYW)
“Girls get engaged”- “fresh page”
“When she looked around, her skin was spattered with ink forming the words of a thousand voices, echoes she even heard in her sleep: ‘whatever you say it is not right’ ‘whatever you do, it is not enough.’ ‘your kindness is fake.’ ‘your pain is manipulative.’” (Why She Disappeared)-written in Nashville
June 24, 2016 , 3 days later, Taylor Met Tom’s Mom in England, then they went to Rome...Calvin comments “she controlled the media and the situation, I had no idea what was going on. So that makes it worse from my perspective”
“Fresh page...filling in blanks as we go...home”(Cornelia)
“Backseat, drunk on something stronger than the drinks in the bar(Cornelia)”
4th of July 2016 “Karlie!!!” (Tom attended)
July 7, 2016 Taylor went with Tom to Australia
July 13, 2016 it was revealed that Taylor wrote TIWYCF and Calvin threw shade...taylorswiftisoverpartybegins

8th January 2014, when she was spotted viewing property in New York and possibly (probably?) before the end of November 2013, when Taylor went on tour again.)
Karlie Kloss bought west village townhouse August 2012- 151 Charles St.
-2nd floor private terrace
-gated front courtyard(cruel summer)
-rain shower
-staircase to bedroom
-8 Charles Lane, the $59 million West Village development site that's being marketed as the perfect place for a giant single family “mansion”- delicate
-3rd floor west side (delicate)
-stairs (delicate)
January 8- stays with Karlie “3rd floor on the west side me and you”(Delicate), “fresh page on the desk, filling in the blanks as we go/can’t make any promises”(Cornelia/delicate) “stay here, honey! I don’t wanna share”(delicate)
Karlie at Andrea’s Birthday Party – January 2014-“unless you wanna come along?”(Gorgeous?)
During the secret sessions in 2014, fans reported that there was a picture of Karlie, Taylor, and Andrea with a cake hanging up, and they were all in winter attire. We believe that because Andrea’s birthday is in early January, this picture was taken at the party.
