i wanna make a sub au where its supernatural/holy entites mixed w dystopia (+ redesign my fallen angel oc designs)

inspired by ff7, horizon and probably a bunch of other games i forgot

mainly ff7, even tho i havent even played the game LMAO

but ive seen a few clips and i like the environment/graphics/vibes

so for now just think of a dystopian setting where the angels demons and allsorts exist

nothing too supernatural

probably conflict within society

the setting i think it has a junkyard type vibes

for fits they'd have more streetwear/cyberpunk (as in the game, not so much the modern full of belts) fits

knowing tetsuya nomura, designs might be on the more obscure side (if youve seen some of the kh designs you might(?) get a bit of the feel??)

i'd think abt a lot of leather, heavy duty jackets, worn out clothing, cargo pants, combat boots

and dark color schemes

as for lore

the world is kinda in a state of poverty (typical dystopian setting), humans hate the holy supernatural thinking they're the cause of their misery

its like the gods abandoned the humans

and humans think the supernaturals are so full of themselves

the supernaturals think humans are idiots for blaming their problems on them 

and basically theres tension/conflict between the two sides (not to mention between heaven and hell but even then, they're more on neutral terms than with humans ironically)

i think even supernaturals feel abandoned by gods in this world

theyre not necessarily holy

theyre questioning their own existence

demons dont care as much but angels are probably lost and just doing what they can”

Summary: Lee, being fed up with having to be an angel and her overly devoted angel family and their ways, ran away and ripped her wings off in the process. The escape process was a dangerously risky one, having been hunted down by the angels who refused to let her leave, resulting in her suffering heavy injuries as she collapsed after venturing as far away as possible. a nearby settlement [Liberty], alerted by the disturbance, finds the girl upon their investigation and brings her in. When Lee wakes up, she is only able to remember her name, but is nonetheless accepted refuge in their settlement. Basically, what happens throughout the story is that Lee learns to be human, slowly gets back her memories, and starts turning into a fallen angel.

i’ve been seeing what everyone thought about yesterdays episode and all of your opinions and thoughts are valid. everyone is allowed to have their own opinions on how the show is going. you’re allowed to not like the storyline and are allowed to be upset. i know people are upset, calling matt selfish for asking sylvie to come with him to oregon but i’m not going to jump to conclusion? we know in promos they cut up dialogue so i wouldn’t even put it past him. also, let’s be honest. matt’s number one priority is to make sure sylvie is happy. he knows how important the paramedicine program is to her. even if he’s asking her to come with him, maybe in the moment he didn’t think about it? we know how big of a decision this is so i wouldn’t blame him for not thinking everything through. we know matt doesn’t want this to affect their relationship. this man would honestly do anything to make sure this doesn’t mess up his relationship with sylvie and we just need to wait till next week to see what happens and not jump to conclusion. i also understand people are upset with the darden storyline and your feelings are valid. i know we all wanted to see the brettsey honeymoon phase. but we know matt, he is never the type of person to not make sure his people are okay. he would do anything to make sure they are in good care, even if it means sacrificing his own happiness. he’s the king of self sacrificing let’s be honest lmao. i honestly think the 200th episode is going to show how the rest of the show is going to be (well thinking that the 11th season COULD be the last season, we don’t know). i’ve said this before, and i’ll say it again. the reason why i love sylvie and matt together is because of how supportive they are. how their happiness is important to one another. i have no doubt that no matter where this storyline is going, i know they’re going to fight for their relationship. i know angst is not nice and we’ve been through it as a fandom last season but i do think it’s just going to make them stronger as a couple together. as for matt leaving for oregon? yeah i was a drama queen after the episode ended and i saw the promo (LMAOO💀) but i do not think matt/jesse is going to leave. i think (and a lot of people have been saying this) is that while they go see baby cruz, he’s going to realize that the darden’s family is basically in chicago. matt did tell hermann that any firefighters child is every firefighters child. matt is for sure going to fight like hell to bring the boys back to chicago with him. we saw how griffin told matt that basically the last time he was in a stable home was with matt. griffin and ben are old enough to vouche to come to chicago and stay with matt. they aren’t little kids who cant have a say in what they want. also we know jesse was on set after 10x05 don’t worry besties <3 please keep being positive. i'm sure they're gonna pull a sike and he's not going to leave :)

I could see where the writers were going but I personally don't ship it. There was some chemistry (I could see them going for competitive haters) but for me, Jack flows better without a love interest. Not to mention, there's no future since Jack left her to die.

(By the ways, I'd totes marry Penelope Cruz. Javier, you lucky fella.)

6. Philip and Syrena

It has potential but there was no chemistry and very forced scenes. Maybe it would've worked with different actors or a better paced love story? There is no future since she's gotta live underwater and he's a hooman. How they gonna spend time together?

5. Elizabeth Swann and James Norrington

My boy just can't catch a break can he? Poor lad. I'm glad he stood aside when she chose Will. The fact that he died for her speaks volumes about how much he cares for her, even if it's not requited. (Just a reminder, it's okay if a woman doesn't love you back. That's life.)

4. Davy Jones and Calypso (Tia Dalma)

I wanted to put this higher except that I know how this ship sinks. The fact that Calypso was the only thing that could turn Davy Jones human again 😭😭 but it was clear that they were pretty toxic. He ripped out his heart to forget her and she cursed him. I don't really know who to blame but I'm leaning towards Davy.

3. Henry Turner and Carina Smyth

A bit rushed but I can live with it. So much chemistry and their scenes were so wholesome. Philip and Syrena were like an underdeveloped rip-off of Willabeth so Henrina was a refreshing take. Willabeth are the soft lovers who pine over each other whereas Henrina are the arguing teens who will fuck or fight. They had so much in common and yet they were so different. He's an energetic cinnamon roll and she's a spunky, done-with-life gal. AHHHHHH! I can see a future of bickering and sexual tension before they finally get married. (Side note: the way that she's Barbossa's daughter and he's the Turners' son haha)

2. Hector Barbossa and Margaret Smyth

Hear me out! Hear me out!! The cold, ruthless Hector Barbossa found a woman he loved enough to have a child with?? It's a fucking miracle. And unlike Davy Jones and Calypso, he still loved her long after they were separated. Had she lived and he didn't have to give up Carina, I think Barbossa would've been a very different man (the daddy vibes are real lmao I'll see myself out).

honestly i don’t know if i even really blame daniel in this whole clarice situation, clarice is the one being shitty

honestly severide’s slow descent into desperation over his shoulder was really well written, it has really good pacing

jesus, mill’s mum is such a piece of work

so much of this episode feels like filler

Happy Ending

I meant to get this done last night but I was so exhausted. I wasn’t even sure what direction I wanted to take with this story so  you may notice that lmao. Anyway, enjoy!

“Sylvie, come to Molly’s and just drink your thoughts away.” Gabby insisted through the phone.

“I don’t feel like coming out tonight, at least not yet. I feel so humiliated. I went through years making sure every guy I went on a date with was single.” Sylvie sighed as she looked down at the carton of ice cream on her lap. She moved the spoon into her mouth and took a bite.

“So, it happened. You get back up, dust yourself off and move on.” Gabby said as she poured a drink for Mouch.

“I know. I’ll try to stop by later, okay?” Sylvie said and hung up the phone, causing Gabby to sigh.

She wanted so badly to stop by and check on Sylvie but knew she couldn’t get Herrmann to handle the bar on his own.

“What’s got you making that face?” Antonio asked as he sat down across from his sister.

“Nothing, just tired.” She lied, knowing Antonio was the last person Sylvie wanted to know about her awful humiliation.

“I hear that.” Antonio said. “Give me a beer.”

Gabby walked away to retrieved him a beer and a few seconds later, she returned placing it down in front of him. “How’s Eva?” She asked.

“She’s good, just busy writing her college essay. She amazes me.” He replied with a smile.

“I’ll have to stop by and spend time with her one of these days.” Gabby said, wanting to ease her way into what she wanted to talk about, or rather who she wanted to talk about.

“She would love that.” Antonio said as he took a sip from the beer.

“Keeping it easy tonight, huh?” Gabby asked, arching her eyebrows at his beer.

He shrugged his shoulders. “Eva’s been--uh, every night when I come home, she’s been waiting for me. I don’t want to come home drunk and she thinks I rather go out and drink than spend time with her.” He explained. Although it was the truth, there was also another reason. A reason he couldn’t admit to himself right now, much less admit it to his sister.

“I have to say though, it makes me feel better knowing that someone is watching out for you.” She confessed.

He shrugged his shoulders once again, letting the silence take over them.

“So, um, how’s the single life treating you?” She asked softly. “I’m sure now that everyone knows you’re available again, they can’t keep their hands off you.” Gabby felt like that was the only way to get his attention.

Antonio gave her a puzzled look. “They?” He repeated. “Who is they?” He shook his head, he knew his sister well enough to know what she meant. “If you want to know if I’m seeing anyone, my answer is no. Could have just asked, you know?”

Gabby shrugged her shoulders. “You might tell me everything but due to the circumstances this time, I’m not sure.”

“Well, you can relax, I’m not dating anyone. I tried with Sylvie, it failed miserably. I don’t want to do that again.” He felt like if it couldn’t work with Sylvie, why else would it work with anyone else?

“You know I just want you to be happy.” Gabby said as she poured herself a shot. “Sylvie’s getting back in the dating world, you should too.” There, she thought, what she was dying to him since he sat down was finally out in the open.

As soon as Antonio heard Sylvie was moving on from him, his jaws clenched. He obviously wasn’t happy with the news but what could he do? She wasn’t his anymore. She was free whatever she wanted, and that meant dating other people. After a few seconds, he unclenched his jaw, visibly relaxing.

“I’m happy for her.” He said, wishing he had a strong drink in front of him now.

“Which is all you can allow yourself to say.” She pointed you. She placed the shot glass down on the bar counter top as she leaned forward. “So, you’ll be okay if she gets serious with this guy? If she falls in love with him?” She questioned accusingly. “I should also mention he’s a doctor.” Gabby knew she was playing an evil game with him, but she was also tiring of seeing Sylvie hurt, she deserved better and knew Antonio could give her better.

Antonio glared at her, his anger and jealous shining through his eyes, but he tried to downplayed it. Because the truth was, his life was still a mess, even so more now that he went back to intelligence and he was dealing with issues with Voight. “If you want me to say I still have feelings for Sylvie, I do and I’m not denying that. But if this doctor can make her happier than I did and put her first, who am I to get in the way of that? She deserves to be happy.”

“Yeah, well, she was happy.” Gabby admitted.

“Was?” He asked. “What does that mean?”

Sometimes Gabby wished she could knock some sense into Antonio, especially when it came to his feelings. He obviously still wanted Sylvie, but because he felt like he had too many baggage, he let Sylvie go.

“We um, stopped at Lakeshore where he worked, and that was when Sylvie found out,” Gabby looked at Antonio to see his reaction, but she continued anyway. Hopefully he wouldn’t track down this doctor himself and kick his ass. At this point, Antonio was bound to do anything. “that he was....married.”

Antonio looked at his sister, his nostril flaring with anger. “Wait, what, married?” It wasn’t a question, but more like a question in disbelief. He knew guys like this existed but could never understand why.

She nodded her head as she finally lifted the shot glass toward her lips and downed it. “She was of course angry, you know first hand that she’s sweet but get on her bad side---”

“And you’ll see a different side of Sylvie that not many people know.” He finished her sentence.

“Yeah, so, anyway I dragged her out of there because we were still on shift. As much as I wanted to kick his ass for her, I knew it wasn’t the time nor the place.”

“When did this happen?” He asked.

“A few days ago.” Gabby sighed. “And now she’s swore off guys. I don’t blame her. Once this happens, you kind of don’t have hope that the next guy you meet will be any different.”

Antonio nodded his head, deep in thought. He wanted Sylvie to be happy so why was he so jealous that some other guy made her happy? It may have not lasted long but it made him jealous that even for one night, her mind wasn’t on him, as selfish as that sounded.

“Look, she’ll probably hate me for telling you because you are her ex-boyfriend, so if you talk to her, don’t let her know you know.”

Antonio broke out of his thoughts and he looked at Gabby. “I won’t. We haven’t talked really since our break up, and I doubt she wants to see me now.”

“I know what you’re thinking and what you’re going through.” Gabby began. “When me and Matt were on a break and he was seeing someone else, I was jealous. I didn’t let it show but I was. It didn’t last long but at least Sylvie didn’t sleep with him.” She said, trying to comfort him.

“Like I said earlier, Sylvie is free to do whatever she wants.” He reminded Gabby.

“She is.” She agreed. “And so are you. But you’re not.” She pointed out. “Why is that?”

He shrugged his shoulders as he stood up. “I told you already. I couldn’t make it work with Sylvie, so I don’t think I can make it work with anyone else.” He said as he reached in his pocket for money.

“That’s an excuse and we both know it.” She looked at Antonio. “As much as you want Sylvie to be happy, I want you to be happy too. And I have never seen you as happy as you were with Sylvie. Not even with Laura you were that happy.”

He placed a few bills on the bar and he shrugged his shoulders. “Some people don’t get happy endings and maybe I’m one of those people. But I’ll talk to you later, okay?”

“Antonio?” Gabby asked as he walked away just as Matt was walking over to Gabby.

“Everything okay?” He asked Gabby as he sat down where Antonio was sitting minutes prior.

“I sure hope so.” Maybe she pushed it too much with Antonio. Maybe she should have kept her mouth shut, but Gabby wasn’t known for keeping her mouth shut, that was for sure.

After moping on the sofa for a few hours, Sylvie decided going out would make her feel better. It just had to.

As she putting makeup on her face, the last thing she had to do before she left her apartment, she heard a knock on the door. “Give me a minute!” She called out, knowing whoever it was, couldn’t hear it.

But she refused to answer the door with half makeup on. A few minutes later, she finally finished, not being one to overdo it with makeup anyway.

Her heels clicked against the floor as she walked over to the door. “I swear Cruz or Otis, if you guys forgot your key again---” She yelled as she opened the door, her eyes surprised to see standing on the other side of the door.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to show up unannounced.” Antonio apologized as he looked at Sylvie.

“No, it’s okay. I wasn’t busy.” Sylvie said, wishing that she could sounded more happy but she was still pretty bummed out, although it had nothing to do with Antonio showing up at her door.

“Were you, um, going out?” He asked. His thoughts went back to what Gabby said and he wondered if she forgave that doctor and agreed to go on a date and hear his side of things. Knowing Sylvie, she didn’t give him much of a chance to explain.

“I was just going to Molly’s.” She admitted. “But I can spare a few minutes. Come in.”

Antonio walked inside and he shut the door behind him.

“Don’t take this the wrong way, but what are you doing here?”

“I---,” Antonio remembered that he promised Gabby he wouldn’t say anything about what she told him. “I’m not sure. It was a rough day and I guess---I just wanted to see you, see how you were doing.” He admitted.

“You want a drink?” She asked.

He nodded his head. “Sure.” He walked over to her kitchen counter as Sylvie walked over to the refrigerator. “What sucks about breaking up isn’t so much the break up itself but also losing that friendship too.”

“It does.” She took a deep breath as she walked over to Antonio and handed him a beer. 

“Rough day?” He asked, wondering if she’d tell him about the douchebag doctor.

Sylvie nodded her head. “Rough week.” She confessed as she took a swig of her beer. “And it had nothing to do with my job.”

“Anything I can help with?” He asked softly, hoping he wasn’t overstepping.

“No.” She shook her head. “Maybe if you weren’t my ex, you could.”

He nodded his head. “I can understand that.” He walked over closer to her. “But maybe we should get over that awkward point in our break up and start working towards a friendship?” He suggested. “I mean, you are my sister’s partner and friend after all, we’re bound to run into each other....and even know each other’s business.”

“Gabby told you.” She laughed uncomfortably. “I’m gonna kill her, I am so gonna kill her.”

“Don’t. If she did it to gossip then I wouldn’t stop you, but she was concerned for you.” He pointed out.

“I know and I am grateful she’s my friend. But this sort of thing isn’t something you want your ex-boyfriend to know.” She reminded him. “Besides, it puts you in an awkward position. I know it would for me knowing that you are trying to move on.”

“You know I want you to be happy.” He said as he placed his beer down, he didn’t come over here to drink, he came over here to make sure she was okay. Even if Gabby told him she was, he had to see for himself.

“I want you to be happy too..” She said, her voice trailing off.

“But?” He questioned, knowing it sounded like a but in there too.

“But it would also drive me crazy knowing you tried to move on. It would drive me crazy knowing that you were giving your attention to someone else.”

“That’s because you didn’t end it, I did. Well, it felt like a mutual agreement. But you know what I mean.”

Sylvie placed her beer down next to his and she placed her hand on her face. “I just feel so stupid. It was like every time I tried moving on after you, I choose the wrong guys. First I was trying to marry a guy to give him a green card and now this doctor was married.” She sighed as she started pacing back and forth, clearly still upset. “I feel like a fool. Aren’t you supposed to pick up on something like this? Isn’t there something in your brain that says ‘This guy is married, run away.’”

“I don’t think so.” He replied. “Sometimes we want to believe something so badly that we ignore the red flags.”

“I think I’m more upset that this had to happen in front of Gabby, my ex-boyfriend’s sister. She may be my closest friend, but I should have known she would have told you.”

“I think Gabby had more of an agenda than just letting me know.” He pointed out.

“Maybe.” She agreed.

Antonio took a deep breath. “I just came here to see if you’re okay. Not that it’s any of my business but...”

“That’s sweet.” Sylvie said, meaning it. “I’m fine. I think it was just shocking, embarrassing, and just proves that I’m not a good judge of character.”

“Are any of us, really?” He questioned. “Some people can have us fooled and sadly there are a bunch of cheaters out there that are good at lying. Probably because they get so used to it, it’s a way of life for them now.”

“I don’t think that’s it though.” She admitted. “Yeah, he may have been a good lying maybe. But I think I was just trying to move on so badly that I didn’t stop and think of some signs.” Sylvie said as she walked over to the sofa and sat down.

“Or maybe you were using him.”

“I---I wasn’t!” Sylvie said defensively.

Antonio walked over to Sylvie and sat down next to her. “It wasn’t that long ago when we were dating that you told me you learned your lesson about dating guys that you met on ambo calls, did you not?”

“Well, yeah. But I was also in a better state of mind then too.” She pointed out. “I was in a relationship with you.”

“I’m just saying, it seems to me you were either looking at him as a rebound, which is perfectly normal, or you were waiting for something to happen.”

“I can admit, he did seem too good to be true and usually when that happens, I question it. Yet this time I didn’t. I think I was also tired of looking at what could go wrong and think about what could go right.” She looked over at him. “So, you’re saying you didn’t try to move on?”

He shook his head. “No. And now with Eva living with me, I doubt I’d try now.”

“She is?” She asked. “What happened?”

“She was having a tough time living with her mother. And she asked to live with me, which of course she didn’t need to. I love having her there. It can get challenging with my work schedule but it’s nice to come home seeing her there.”

“I bet it is.” Sylvie smiled softly.

“Anyway. I guess I should leave now so you can head over to Molly’s before it’s too late.” He stood up from the sofa and looked at her. “Are you sure you’re gonna be okay?”

“I am, thank you.” Sylvie promised as she stood up with him. “But um, are you sure you came over here to make sure I was okay?”

“Yeah.” He shrugged his shoulders. “Make sure you aren’t giving up on guys for good.” He gave her a small smile.

“Did Gabby have to tell you everything?” She asked, frustrated.

“She meant well.”

“I know.” She agreed. “So, are you telling me that you weren’t jealous? Even just a little bit?” She asked softly as she walked behind him to the door.

As they reached the door, he turned around and faced her. “Does it matter?” He asked, searching her eyes.

She shrugged her shoulders. “I know I would be jealous if you were trying to move on from me.”

“Maybe I was jealous but after finding out what he did to you--”

“It makes you feel better?” She interrupted him.

“Better?” He echoed. “No way in hell would it make me feel better knowing that you got hurt. That wasn’t what I was trying to say.”

Sylvie stood there, urging him to continue what he was saying.

“I was going to say after finding out what he did to you, it makes me want to go over to the hospital he works out at and kick his ass in front of everyone, and then tell his wife what kind of person he is.” Antonio said, his anger returning. Since he came to Sylvie’s, he was able to keep his emotions in check but he was starting to lose control again.

“How would you even know where---” Sylvie shook her head. “I don’t even know what I’m saying.”

Antonio smiled, shrugging his shoulders. “So, you’re saying that if the roles were reversed and I went out with someone else, you would get jealous?” He asked, remembering what she said earlier.

“Well, yeah. We never broke up because the feelings weren’t there.” She pointed out. “I’m actually surprised that you aren’t dating anyone.” She shrugged her shoulders.

“Why do you say that?” He asked. “Before you, my last relationship was with Laura and that ended years ago.”

“Just because you don’t want to date anyone doesn’t mean no one is interested. I mean, have you looked at yourself?” At her words, Sylvie’s face began to heat up.

Antonio chuckled and he shrugged his shoulders. He closed the distance between them and whispered in her ear. “I guess that’s because I’m still not over you.”

“Antonio.” Sylvie said breathlessly.

He shook his head. “Not like this, Sylvie. Not like this.” The last thing he wanted to do was even talk about their feelings about each other when she’s still feeling hurt and humiliated.

She nodded her head. “Okay.” She tilted her head to the side as she thought about something. “You were right about something though.”

“Yeah?” He asked, wondering about what.

“I think I keep choosing these asshole guys because they are the opposite of you. And maybe I think that’s a good thing, but it isn’t. Because even through all of your baggage, namely your ex-wife, you’re still the best guy I know. You’re loyal, honest, and would never do anything to purposely hurt me or anyone else. If I’m being totally honest now, I think I needed to go on a date with that guy and find out he was married that way so I know the only guy in the world for me is you.” She admitted, biting down on her bottom lip.

Antonio processed everything she said and he nodded his head. “I understand what you’re saying, I do, and if I’m being honest too, I know you’re the one for me. But I don’t want to rush it this time. I came here tonight to make sure you’re okay. And you are.” He smiled softly. “But you still need time to get over what you went through and I’m giving you space to do that.”

Sylvie frowned. “But---”

“So how about I pick you up tomorrow night and we can discuss everything?” He suggested.

Sylvie grinned. “Sure.”

“Is 8:00 good?” He asked.

“It is.” She agreed.

“We’re going to do things right this time.” He promised as he leaned forward and kissed her cheek. “Be careful going out tonight, okay?”

“I will.”

He opened the door and walked out.

Rant - Rise of the Isle of the Lost

(alternative title: i read rise of the isle of the lost so you don’t have to)

first off i’m probably biased but if you got something out of my opinions in the past then maybe you’ll find this interesting as well.

there are spoilers, obviously, but if you ask me, you really don’t have to read the book, save your money. (i put a short summary under the cut so you know what’s going on)

i’m gonna be honest this turned more into “i’m picking this book apart” than just a rant lmao. i blame the excessive amount of cinemasins i’ve been watching over the past few days.

and be warned - this is gonna be LONG and not very nice.

~summary if you haven’t read the book~ Arabella (Ariel’s niece) snatched the trident to fuck around, causes a storm, and loses it in the ocean. Waves carry it through the barrier to isle territory, because the barrier is penetrable for a short amount of time due to Arabella’s magic fuckery i think.

Uma hears a rumor that the trident is here, but she has no way to get to it before someone else finds it.

Captain Hook hosts a race where everyone can enter with anything that can swim, the price is a pirate ship. Uma wins the race and now has a ship and a pirate crew consisting of Harry, Gil and a few others.

Through Sophie (Yen Sid’s apprentice) they learn that Ursula’s golden seashell necklace is on the Isle of the Doomed (where Maleficent’s castle is) and they sail there to find it, because there’s enough magic left in it to guide them to the trident or something.

They find the trident but then Mal&Co show up.

While all this is happening Arabella tells the rotten four that she lost the trident, and through the magic mirror they find out where it is, and that a lot of people on the isle of the lost are looking for it, so they set out to find it first. FGM catches them as they try to steal a boat that belongs to Ben’s family, but Ben shows up to convince FGM that it was fine. The five of them then drive the boat to the barrier, where Mal pokes a hole and calls the trident to her, just as Uma is about to get her hands on it, overpowering Uma.

There’s also a sideplot where Ben goes to the great wall of China with Lonnie to solve a conflict between two villages but this is all totally irrelevant.

and just to get this out of the way - don’t give me that “it’s a book for children” bs. just because it’s for a younger demographic doesn’t mean it can’t be good.

ok let’s start with the things i liked:

- Lonnie has a sword (which is a clear sign of lesbianism)

- Jane wants to do magic and she wants to help people fairy godmother style. i love this because 1. it gives her more personality and 2. it’s exactly how i imagined her lmao.

- Mal uses magic despite the magic ban.

- i like Gil, he’s kinda cute. and Harry too, and the dynamic between him and Uma and Gil. (ot3 anyone?)

now to the cons:

- Harry has this obsession with his hook (which he has to hold in his hand cause he still has both hands) which i find interesting, it has so much angst potential but i already know i’m gonna have to write a fic about that myself cause it’s gonna be hella disappointing in the movie because either 1. it’s not talked about at all or 2. it’s only good for a joke or two. (”oh no! my hook!” cue sitcom laugh track)

- the use of the word “guyliner”

- CJ is Harry’s younger sister, Harriet is his older sister. the gastons twins are gil’s brothers. Melissa de la Cruz *grasping at straws*: conSisTEnCy

- speaking of consistency, the anti-heroes club isn’t mentioned once, in case you were wondering.

- there’s another school besides dragon hall on the isle, it’s called Serpent Prep. like, i know there are characters (mostly Uma) who appear now for the first time without being mentioned before, ever. i can forgive that. but making up a whole new school just adds to the confusion of how big the isle actually is, and it’s also completely redundant.  this world just feels like a car accident where more cars keep crashing into the wrecks that are already blocking the street.

- carlos being in favor of the magic ban. what. remember how he was a slave for the better part of his life? “people should learn to live without magic” suck my toe (i made another post about what i think of the magic ban here)

- idk if this is on melissa de la cruz or what but the writing is just. not good. the sentences are boring, the use of adverbs is weird, the characters are shallow, the worldbuilding is.. idk how to describe it. it’s like when you look at the window of a shop and it looks nice, but when you enter it’s empty. or like a cardboard facade.

- all the characters do and say the things that are most obvious for them, but nothing beyond that. there’s no life in the characters and the world doesn’t draw you in.

- also the pacing is awful. in my first reading session i read about a third but it felt like nothing had happened. there’s so much setting up (and most of it is boring, it feels like every character just appears for their mandatory line but it has no relevance) and i’m just waiting for the plot.

- janelos. if you’re a janelos shipper than good for you, but i’m not and i’m salty. they could have such a great platonic relationship, why why why does it have to be romantic? (don’t bother, i already know the answer) they had a scene together, which was kinda sweet (through my platonic goggles), but “her laugh is cute” is not fucking enough to make a romantic relationship believable. 

their entire romantic relationship is built on “he was a boy, she was a girl” and nothing else.

- also devie. i’m pretty indifferent to this ship in general but the way it’s portrayed is so lackluster, like. doug shows up (for no other reason than showing up at least once in this book), is called evie’s boyfriend and that’s kinda it. we didn’t see how they got together, we don’t see what their relationship is like (except doug sorta putting evie on a pedestal), it’s just.. kinda there. wow. so much feeling.

there’s so much time wasted on meaningless worldbuilding that there’s no time left for giving life to the characters and their relationships. (actually there would be time, the book is not that long)

- (safe for uma, harry and gil) this book doesn’t even try to get me to like the main characters and completely relies on the fact that i already know and like them from preceding works.

- there’s always a parallel plot with Ben going on in every book, which is.. not terrible, but especially in this one it’s very distracting from the main plot, besides, what he’s doing is rarely all that interesting.  he’s travelling with lonnie and they had a nice scene together but it ended before it got anywhere near interesting. (Lonnie was about to get character development but then it was about Ben the end)

- not that i dislike ben, or that i don’t care for what he’s doing, but his sideplot is kinda just there so that is already short book isn’t even shorter. in the last book it had at least something to do with what the others were doing, but this time it doesn’t have any significance to the main storyline whatsoever. imo they should’ve just cut the whole bit out and put this content somewhere else, idk, give him his own diary or something, but now it’s just annoyingly strewn throughout the actual story.

(edit: you know what nevermind, this whole plotline is bullshit i’m not even gonna go into it but they punch a whole into the great wall of china and i crave Death™)

- the room that is taken up by ben’s sideplot could’ve been used to elaborate the relationships between the characters, or the characters’ inner lives. this book does so much tell not show that everything feels flat. “they’re best friends, they’re boyfriend/girlfriend, they love each other very much” ya thanks for telling me but is anything gonna happen to back these statements up or

- there’s an entire page that’s basically a montage of the pirate crew repairing Uma’s ship and it’s hella redundant (just like 50% of the book tbh)

- somehow interesting scenes are left out and when the plot is picked up again it’s “this happened and now we’re somewhere else”.

- the other characters get a sideplot too, which would be nice except they all have like 1 character trait and it’s all pretty meaningless. plus, the chapters are all super short and jumping between plotlines all the damn time is annoying.

- new characters appear just to be a plot device. happened with freddie and maddie in book 2, happens now with Arabella in book 3. she’s the niece of Ariel, but we don’t know who her mother is (based on her being described as wearing purple i’m gonna guess it’s Alana) which is excuable because i guess you can’t expect the readers to know all the names of Ariel’s sisters, but it just adds to her being a throwaway character. $100 that Arabella won’t appear in dd2. 

- actually, going off on a tangent about maddie here, wasn’t her background story basically the same as uma’s? that she was a friend of Mal’s when they were little? whatever happened to her, guess well never know cause she’s never gonna appear again.

- new things are made up just for convenience, or idk maybe it’s supposed to flesh out the world but it all feels so disjointed and loveless.  the annual seaside festival (i think it’s called?) where king triton whips out the old trident to give Arabella an opportunity to lose the trident in the first place, the R.O.A.R. competiotion (i forgot what that’s short for too, but it’s a mix of parcour and fencing, whatever) just to give Jay some other purpose besides “is also there” instead of, idk, an actual personality and inner life (but the VK’s dealing with the aftermath of growing up on the Isle is probably too serious and scawy uwu) like idk it’s probably the same in a lot of other stories, but instead of giving life to this world it all feels meaningless (like 98% of wicked world tbh)

- Lonnie has an older brother who wants to launch a hiphop career, and his name is Li’l Shang, which is an absolute fucking joke and takes the cake for worst name in this franchise.

- Ursula’s golden seashell is on the isle because for some reason it didn’t make it to Auradon where it was supposed to be displayed at the museum. i get that they want to use what they can from disney movies but this is just bullshit. the seashell being on the isle makes no fucking sense whatsoever.

- the critical overuse of the word “swaggered”

- seriously it’s like de la cruz saw one of those “words to use instead of walked”- tumblr posts and picked two (swaggered and sauntered)

- almost halfway through, wondering if there’s gonna be a plot

the things in this story just sorta happen, there’s no real suspense curve.

- ok this is really subjective but “Lost Revenge” for a name for a ship is so unnecessarily edgy lmao

- i’m writing most of this stuff as i come across it and at this point i’m just groaning in agony. they just introduced a new character, Sophie, who is Yen Sid’s sorcerer’s intern. intern for sorcery. on the isle of the lost. sure. also, apparently yen sid brought her with him when he moved to the isle like???? i mean the people of auradon already didn’t give a shit about the children that were born on the isle, but they just let yen sid take a little girl with him??? what the fffffffff (also sophie is another throwaway character that will never appear again. i’m blaming this on the fact that there are approximately 462 different canons in this franchise and we don’t get the chance to get attatched to characters that only function as plot devices in whatever canon they appear in)

- a new character called Charlie is introduced as the village elder of Stone Village (china, next to the wall) and he’s only a few years older than ben. he’s the descendant of ??? (molly and arthur weasly, probably) (seriously this is a throwaway character if i’ve ever seen one)

- mal’s morals are inconsistent. she has no problem using her spellbook for minor inconveniences but doesn’t want to steal a boat because it’s not the auRaDOn wAy.

- evie scolding mal for using the spellbook too often because that way she’ll never learn to live without magic (yadda yadda) but she also does this when mal opens a gate with magic in order to get to the boat they are going to steal, even though the matter is pretty time-sensitive and they had no other way of getting around that gate. like i get the idea of “solving problems without magic”, but this was really not the time to play moralizer, evie.

- there’s a yacht club building and FGM is giving it a new coat of paint with her wand solving problems without magic eat my entire ass.

she keeps using her wand!!! what the fuck!!!!

- i’m not going to go into detail over this but everything falls into place so conveniently that there aren’t really any obstacles to overcome and every conflict is solved within a matter of sentences.

- there are small cliffhangers every 200 words because it keeps jumping between plotlines. before you even get the chance to get into one of the plotlines it’s over again and it takes ages for anything to move along cause the stories keep interrupting each other.

- i’m losing my fucking mind over here as we speak. FGM catches the rotten four trying to steal a boat and she seriously thinks sending them back to the isle is an appropriate punishment. this is absolutely ludicrous and completely disproportionate. “this is exactly what we feared when we let villains into Auradon” they! are! children! (i know technically they’re teens but this doesn’t change the fact that imprisoning them on the isle again is super fucking cruel) i can’t believe how terribly literally everything is handled in this goodforsaken fantasy world. (not to mention that this is an insult to the character of FGM)

- so it’s been established that Mal can turn back time and she uses it when Uma reaches the trident. mal turns back time, uma doesn’t have the trident yet. so far so good, right?

look, i know time travel stuff is always prone to plotholes, but this is just ridiculous. 1. when she first uses it she comes to the conclusion “those with villain blood appear to be immune”, because evie wasn’t affected by it. it works on uma (though she remembers reaching the trident but doesn’t understand what happened) and it’s not made clear how it actually affects someone with villain blood. the setup for this whole shtick was weak. idk if i explained that well enough but you can ask me if you want a more detailed explanation i still have salt left lmao. 2. through carlos we know the others felt it happending, but what about ben? they don’t explain it to him even though he should have no memory of mal turning back time. 3. this book had all the time in the world to make this universe’s rules of time travel a little more clear (like why did nothing happen to both uma’s row boat and the speedboat? do objects not get set back in time too?) 4. one rule was explained tho: “it only turns back time to the top of the hour, and only if it’s been less than fifteen minutes” so mal might only have turned back time for like 1 minute, which would explain why the boats remain in the same spot, but it doesn’t change the fact that everything conveniently falls into place again because it just so happens to be *just* the right time for it to work (meaning no more than 15 minutes after a full hour) which in turn makes me wonder why this “top of the hour” rule was established in the first place. they could’ve just left that bit out and this whole thing wouldn’t be another case of dumb luck for the protagonists. i guess i’ll just go fuck myself.

- ok safe for that time travelling bs the last third is actually a lot okay-er than the rest. there was a cool scene where harry fell down a hole and was scared an panicking. this and the whole pirate-crew-escapes-from-a-trap-filled-cave was the best part of the book imo.

- after the great showdown between uma and mal (where they’re not actually face to face due to the barrier and thick fog, which is kind of a cool way to safe their encounter for the movie, i’ll give them that) mal stumbles backwards when she caught the trident and accidentally knocks evie overboard, which is completely unnecessarily dramatic, because the climax is already over, and is just there to show once again how gay mal and evie are for each other, without actually delivering. same old. (there’s also a scene where evie looks at mal “with a fond smile” while she’s sleeping like come on. those two scenes contain more feeling than any interaction between ben and mal ever. and at the end there is an exchange between the two that literally, like word for word, draws parallels to an interaction between ben an mal like are you kidding me)

- Evie says several times that Mal shouldn’t use magic, which is not too out of character i guess, i mean Evie has enough baggage concerning magic that this is believable.

she did use her mirror a lot, which is clearly magic, but somehow this is different from mal solving a problem with her spellbook?? hypocritical much. and it kinda retcons on the whole setup of her not being comfortable with magic.

in the end she gives her mirror to the museum, but it wasn’t her idea. it would’ve tied in with her previous statements a lot better if she herself had been like “i should give up my mirror so i have consistent characterization”

- Audrey dumps Chad for reasons unknown. not that i care all that much about that ship (i do think it’s interesting tho) but idk is this just so the movie doesn’t have to explain why they aren’t together anymore? (would be kinda lazy) felt like it was just there for cheap laughs.

- i’m surprised Jay didn’t get an Obligatory Love Interest™ but actually i’m not surprised because none of the writers care about jay.

- you might remember R.O.A.R. (the fencing/sword fighting-parcour-clusterfuck-sport). so chad was the captain of the team and has practised sword fighting all his life, but jay manages to beat him after a total amount of? 3? or so hours of training? and immediately becomes the new captain? bull

- also jay is supposedly really good at parcour, right? but he needed to practise wall jumps cuz his technique was bad or something for some reason. why tho. isn’t parcour his forte and why did carlos make the team before jay did. like not saying he can’t do roar but come on.

honestly tho, i kinda set myself up for this. i mean i already didn’t like the second book but for some reason i thought this one was going to be different.

the writing, characterization, worldbuilding etc. is just really lazy to me, and tbh i think it just exists to squeeze more money out of this franchise.

other people with different expectations and lower standards for writing might enjoy this tho idk
