A new episode of Open Deeply Podcast dropped today! Babatunde Akinboboye, A.K.A. The HipHopera Guy, joins @opendeeplywithkateloree & myself, to tell his captivating life story. When @babatunde_hiphopera weaves operatic excellence seamlessly with hiphop & trap beats, you can see him brimming over with passion and joy. But you'd never suspect the intense struggles he's overcome. His early childhood was filled with love but brutally shifted to one of abuse, struggles with undiagnosed ADHD, and feeling hopeless. Snuck out Nigeria by benevolent family intervention and whisked away to the U.S. Babatunde found joy in music. But he also contended with American racism, not just in school, but also the opera community. Banatune tells us how he and the Black Opera Alliance, fought the old school opera establishment-- Plus how it lead to his groundbreaking, mega-viral hiphopera style. If you’re new to Open Deeply, here’s what it’s about: Each guest on Open Deeply is featured in two episodes. In the first, they tell their life story focusing on the pivotal things that shaped them. The second episode is devoted to taking a magnifying glass to the most iunfluential moments to reveal deeper psychological, philosophical, and spiritual insights.  Link in bio or you can find it here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/132j1NiRF9nJqqDvO4lnoN?si=bc08gogeTL2i5oREv_1lsQ&dl_branch=1 #opendeeplypodcast #podcast #podcastsofinstagram #vulnerabilityisstrength #kateloree #sunnymegatron #hiphoperaguy #blackoperasingers #hiphop #hiphopmusic #hiphopartist #nigeria #lagos #nigerianmen #nigerianmusic #blackartists #blackopera https://www.instagram.com/p/CQrLEYALB7q/?utm_medium=tumblr

#Queen #JessyeNorman 1945 - 2019 💐 “Thy hand, Belinda; darkness shades me, On thy bosom let me rest, More I would, but Death invades me; Death is now a welcome guest. When I am laid in earth, May my wrongs create No trouble in thy breast; Remember me, but ah! forget my fate.” ~ Henry Purcell “I am deeply spiritual; I revel in those things that make for good - the things that we can do to shed a little light, to help place an oft-dissonant universe back in tune with itself... Long live art, long live friendship, long live the joy of life!” ~ Jessye Norman #HenryPurcell #didoslament #didoandaenea #opera #aria #arias #soprano #mezzosoprano #blackwomeninopera #blackwomeninoperacelebrated #blackwomen #blackoperasingers #jessyenormanschoolofthearts #jessyenormanschool #Wagnerian #AfricanAmerican #operasinger #blackgirlmagic #blackwomeninthearts #blackness #blackexcellence #strauss #wagner #classicsinger #classicmusic #artlover #culture #joakimvonditmar https://www.instagram.com/p/B3EkadjlI7P/?igshid=14ggg451jdu2n

“Summertime” jazzy and the Porgy and Bess operatic version (Swipe 👈🏾). I trained as a classical countertenor @vassarcollege. It’s sometimes good to revisit this forgotten range of my voice while chilling on the sofa 😂. • To my followers that don’t know what a countertenor is—a countertenor is a classical male singer that can sing within the range of women (contralto, soprano). In the video, “Summertime” is being performed in the original Sopranist range from the “Porgy and Bess” opera. I saw this opera for the first time this year @metopera. . . . . . #blackoperasingers #opera #classicalmusic #operasingers #acappella #musicianlife #jazz #operasinger #jazzsinger #operasingersofinstagram #countertenor #porgyandbess #jazzvocalist #singerlife #singing #music #instasinger #tenor #summertime #metopera #blackboyjoy https://www.instagram.com/p/B_nFBcGJPKi/?igshid=1gj6rnlfx8s51

“Marian Anderson is remembered as one of the best American contraltos (women with lower singing voices) of all time. She was the first African American singer to perform at the White House and the first African American to sing with New York's Metropolitan Opera. Marian Anderson was a pioneer in winning recognition at home and abroad for African American artists. In 1939 an incident involving the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) helped focus public attention on racism. The DAR denied Anderson use of their Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., for an April concert. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt resigned from the DAR in protest and had the U.S. government allow Anderson to perform at the Lincoln Memorial. Her concert there, on Easter morning, drew a live audience of seventy-five thousand, and millions more heard it over the radio.” Read more: https://www.notablebiographies.com/A-An/Anderson-Marian.html “When you stop having dreams and ideals - well, you might as well stop altogether. “ Marian Anderson When I was younger, I was classically trained and sang Italian opera. When I sang opera, it felt like I was flying emotionally. I can relate to Marian’s experience with the DAR. Simply because of the melanin in her skin, others deemed her unworthy of opportunities and experiences. They set up roadblocks for her.Their perceptions had nothing to do with who she really was or what she was capable of. She persisted. People like Eleanor Roosevelt helped a great deal and still do. Thank you for always being you Marian Anderson in spite of others. I realize that the stereotypes and racism of others is something that I can not change. I will always be me and if someone isn’t willing to take the time to see, know, and learn, it is their loss. Time keeps moving on. Doors close and open. Thank You universe. #mariananderson #blackopera #blackoperasingers #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #iamnotyourstereotype #afropunk (at United States) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt4BawiFpQz/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1y0i2x7aizrsg

#Repost from @aurnonline ・・・ Maltida Sissieretta Joyner Jones was a pioneering soprano. Sissieretta was the first African American to perform at Carnegie Hall in 1893 leading the way for opera singers such as Marian Anderson and Jessye Norman. Before her career catapulted after her performance at Madison Square Garden in 1892, Sissieretta once told a reporter who suggested she change her appearance to further her career, "Try to hide my race and deny my people? Oh, I would never do that. I am proud of belonging to them and would not hide what I am even for an evening." She was also known as Madame Jones and the The Black Patti after her white Italian counterpart. Capatalizing on the comparison, Sissieretta starred in the touring company called The Black Patti Troubadours. #aurn #aurnonline #hiddenfigures #blackhistory #sissierettajones #blackpatti #opera #blackoperasingers #mariananderson #jessyenorman #madamejones #blackhistorymonth https://www.instagram.com/p/BtqkR-yh9hj/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=gs37hamlzzn8

@Regrann from @ohitsjanedoe - Today Jan 7th in 1955, Marian Anderson Anderson became the first African-American soloist to sing at New York's Metropolitan Opera. She was in her late 50s when she appeared in Verdi's Un ballo en maschera. It was conductor Arturo Toscanini who said a voice like Marian Anderson's comes around only once in a century. Despite Anderson's talents early on in her career, her ascent to success was not without its obstacles. Most notable is the Daughters of American Revolution's refusal to allow Anderson to sing at Washington, D.C.'s Constitution Hall in 1939 due to segregation. Protests ensued and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, along with President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Anderson's manager and the NAACP, arranged for an open-air concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Easter Sunday where she sang to a crowd of 75,000 people, not including those who tuned in via radio. The celebrated contralto served as inspiration for artists struggling through racial prejudices and Anderson used her position to participate in the 1960's civil rights movement and sang at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963. Anderson received numerous recognitions including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963, the National Medal of Arts in 1986, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991. Grande Dame RIP #JessyeNorman 🙏🏽🖤 “One has to find a balance between what people need from you and what you need for Yourself.” ~ Jessye Norman “I wasn't born Austrian; I wasn't born German. My roots are from Africa, and I do not have any reason for not wanting to celebrate that. Every time that I can, I like to kind of mention it, you know, just to keep people sort of knowing exactly what's going on. My French is pretty good, but I'm still African, thank you very much." ~ Jessye Norman I asked my mother when I was 10 if she could buy me some classical music ... I have always LOVED #Opera #ClassicMusic etc Having lived in Salzburg between the age of 15 - 18 only enhanced that love and appreciation. I remember moving back to Paris in 1989 and on Bastille Day Jessye Norman sang «La Marseillaise» during the bicentenary celebrations of the French Revolution Place de la Concorde and this photo was taken at the Dinner given by Patrice Calmettes in her honor at the restaurant «le Privilège» in the famous Parisian nightclub le Palace, from left to right politician Eric Vannier, former prime minister Lionel Jospin, fashion designer #PatrickKelly who passed away 6 months later in January 1990, Ghanaian model #RebeccaAyoko, #GraceJones, Bob Wilson, Jessye Norman, Thomas R Rehel, George Norman, my old friend model #Katoucha Niane who left us in 2008, Patrice Calmettes, minister Béatrice Marre, then time model Yvan de la Fressange #14juillet #bastilleday #lepalace #leprivilege #azzedinealaia #jeanpaulgoude Photo F de la Fosse Sygma Private collection #Queen #Soprano #Wagnerian #AfricanAmerican #operasinger #blackoperasinger #blackgirlmagic #blackwomeninthearts #blackness #blackexcellence #strauss #wagner “Divinités du Styx” from Gluck’s “Alceste”, 1987 #amazinggrace #metropolitanopera #artlover #culture #joakimvonditmar https://www.instagram.com/p/B3D39yQl4ZX/?igshid=xh9th5h9vhaf

Andrew Frierson, whose bass-baritone reverberated from the stages of theaters and music halls around the world as part of the first generation of black opera singers to make their voices heard, died on Dec. 6 in Oberlin, Ohio. He was 94. Born March 29, 1924 in Columbia, Tennessee, Mr. Frierson (pronounced FRY-er-son), made his New York debut at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1948 while still a student and went on to perform for six seasons with the New York City Opera. He also sang at the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the occasion of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Mr. Frierson taught at Southern University in Baton Rouge, La., in the early 1950s; directed the Henry Street Settlement Music School in Manhattan in the ’60s; and was a professor of voice at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio in the ’70s. In the early 1980s, Mr. Frierson and a colleague, James Kennon-Wilson, founded Independent Black Opera Singers, to encourage the careers of black male performers through education and competitions and by calling attention to the scarcity of blacks cast in major roles.
